The Benefits of Soy Wax Candles

We often get people asking us what the difference is between "big brand" candles (such as Yankee Candle and Nest Fragrances) and ours. The most apparent difference of our candles is that they are handcrafted in small batches, ensuring the finest quality of every candle made.

The second difference is most often the type of wax used. All LeafBird candles are made with 100% soy wax. Most of the "big brand" candle manufacturers, typically make their candles with either all paraffin wax - or a blend of paraffin wax and vegetable-based candle waxes. By using a 100% soy wax candle by LeafBird, you'll experience the following key differences:

Cleaner Burning Candle. Our candle wax has no toxins, carcinogens or pollutants. You won't find any soot like you get from petroleum-based or "blended wax" paraffin candles.
Biodegradable and Water Soluble. Made from soybeans, LeafBird candles are naturally biodegradable which makes accidental spills easier to clean.
Pure 100% Soy Wax. LeafBird soy wax is certified kosher, contains no herbicides or pesticides and has zero non-vegetable based waxes added.

Other key differences, in our opinion, include a ban on the use of phthalates in any of our fragrance oils. Many experts believe phthalates are harmful and potentially toxic when burned. As a small business, we know how important it is to listen to our customers, and obtain feedback on preferences, as well as customer wants/needs.

Over the last year, we heard loud and clear that while many of our customers loved our candles, they wanted a candle design that would complement their homes better. We also learned that many of our candles are given as gifts, and the packaging is an important part of the gift-giving experience.

We're proud to share with you, that after five month of design concepts, product testing, and focus groups, we're unveiling our all-new candles.

Our Signature Glass Jar is now available in an elegant white or black glass jar, with an upscale metallic emblem that carries the LeafBird name, assuring the finest ingredients and handcrafted quality you've come to expect from LeafBird.

You may also notice the new double-wick design, which provides for enhanced candle and aroma performance, without decreasing the burn time.

When we launched LeafBird Fine Fragrances, we spent many months to research and test a variety of ingredients to ensure that they yielded not only the finest soy candle burning experience but also one that was centered around health and wellness.

We learned early on that the candle industry has historically used fragrance oils containing chemical compounds commonly referred to as “phthalates.” We asked ourselves just what phthalates are, why they are used and do they compliment our philosophy. The short answer was they were not what we wanted in our homes, and so we decided early on not to use fragrance ingredients containing phthalates.

Used in everything from household cleaners to food packaging to perfume, cosmetics, and personal-care products, phthalates in candles allow manufacturers to enable their candles to hold a strong scent for very extended periods, as well as blend their fragrance ingredients into the wax easier. This may make their job of creating candles easier, but many research studies have concluded the use of phthalates is harmful to users of any product containing phthalates.

In fact, in 2008, the US Congress banned some phthalates from use in children’s products and required the Consumer Product Safety Commission to research the chemicals further. Also, many academic studies and policy reports have expressed concern over the health impacts of phthalates.

While a firm consensus on the potential risks and effects from the use of phthalates has yet to be addressed adequately, we at LeafBird Fine Fragrances made the choice not to use any fragrance ingredients containing phthalates in our products. We care about our environment, team members, and our customers. It is our mission to deliver the finest soy candles and home fragrance products.

Why is Soy Wax the Best Choice for Candles?

We are often asked by customers why we chose only to use 100% natural soy wax in our candles. For us, it was an easy choice. We are happy to share our belief on why we use soy wax and only 100% soy wax, not a blend or hybrid.

Our soy wax is made by extracting the vegetable oil from soybean flakes and being hydrogenated. The soybeans are first harvested, cleaned, cracked and dehulled before being rolled into flakes. Based on our research, using 100% soy wax achieves a cleaner burn. That means you will not experience the soot build up on your glass or walls in your home as you will from petroleum-based paraffin wax candles. Also, we believe in health and wellness and appreciated that our soy wax contains no toxins, carcinogens or pollutants.

Sustainability is something many people are beginning to take seriously. We liked the fact that by only sourcing 100% soy wax, we are creating a sustainable product. Conversely, paraffin wax and partial soy/paraffin wax blended candles rely on petroleum, which is not a sustainable practice.

Another choice we made when finding the best soy candle wax was to source a soy wax that is certified kosher and contains no herbicides or pesticides from the soybean production. We believe our customers will appreciate that the air in their homes and offices will not be impacted by burning LeafBird candles.
