/> PLAYTIME—Pups enjoy a little friendly competition as a Barkley staffer presents them with a ball. In less than two years of opening its doors, The Barkley Pet Hotel and Day Spa is expanding its Doggie Day Camp, grooming salon and boarding areas. The original 32,000-squarefoot campus will expand an additional 8,000 square feet.

The expansion will add six additional grooming and bathing stations to a new section of the facility. The day spa will offer mud masks, pawdicures, pet massage and fur dying as part of the spa services menu.

The large- and small- dog areas of Doggie Day Camp are increasing by 3,500 square feet. A new small doggie day camp is under construction to allow more room for little canines.

Both day camps have indoor/ outdoor play areas, cabana shading and a misting system to keep dogs cool during the summer months.

Tuff Stuff flooring is used in the indoor play area. Tuff Stuff is a rubberized epoxy for safer and cleaner play. K-9 Turf, an anti-microbial faux-type grass, is used in the outdoor sections.

Based on client feedback, 12 more Barkley Park Suites will be added to a new wing of boarding suites. Each suite is in a park-like setting and will provide individual webcams and TVs for guests as well as sky lights for natural lighting.

The online cameras will be upgraded as more owners want to see their dogs. High-definition webcams are being installed in the Doggie Day Camp areas.

The Barkley is at 31166 Via Colinas, Westlake Village, adjacent to the Westlake Village Animal Hospital. class="caption"> Sue Hutchings from Knowle Grange

I’M ALWAYS amazed at how readily people reach for the painkillers rather than looking at the underlying causes of pain.

Pain is the body’s way of telling us something needs correcting.

So if you have a back issue, a visit to the osteopath or chiropractor may help.

Long-term use of pain killers can irritate the digestive system, so why not try natural remedies? There are a whole range of complementary therapies, such as acupuncture, reiki, hypnotherapy and massage.

We offer all of these at Knowle Grange Health Spa in Frant.

It’s important to try just one at a time, otherwise you won’t know what’s working for you.

Gentle exercise releases endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers.

Breathe deeply. Pain causes anxiety and we tend to breathe more shallowly. Pain and inflammation go hand in hand. By cutting down on inflammatory foods, such as red meat, wheat, dairy, coffee, sugar and alcohol, your body will become less acidic.

Chew more and eat green veg.

Enjoy more alkaline foods such as avocado, oats, green tea, oily fish, and most nuts and berries.

Start your day with a slice of lemon in hot water.Less acidity leads to less inflammation which leads to less pain.
<iframe

The Spa provides the opportunity to slow down, relax and enjoy a soothing and therapeutic treatment.”
The Spa’s service menu includes body services, facials, skin care and 25-, 50- and 80-minute massages. The signature treatment, a bamboo massage, uses heated bamboo as an extension of the therapist’s hands to reach into muscle tissue more deeply, gently and efficiently than possible with hands alone, providing added relief for tired and sore muscles.

The Spa at Boyne Highlands is located in the lower level of the Heather Highlands Inn, the former location of the Wellness Institute. The space has been extensively renovated, adding a spa boutique and relaxation area as well as remodeled treatment rooms. Hours of operation are 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

The Spa is now accepting reservations, which can be made by calling (231) 526-3846. More details are available at www.boyne.com/spas.

A grand opening celebration for The Spa is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. Saturday, May 26. Boyne Highlands also offers lodging and spa packages. />Emerson’s passion for photography began early in life. His studies of fine art at <span

In 2007, The Art Around You was founded, the concept being simple; bringing to light the people, places, and things we look at every day, but never really see. Emerson shows how extraordinary the ordinary can be and opens to us a world whose existence we have neither the time nor vision to acknowledge. He allows us to see through new eyes and look at things a different way. He is absorbed into the environment; wandering, wondering, watching, and capturing the space as never before seen. They remain in Dickson County Jail on $10,000 bond each.

Dickson police and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation executed a search warrant Wednesday at 11 a.m. at VIP Spa at 1840 Highway 46 S. in Dickson.

A TBI agent explained the search warrant was issued based on probable cause resulting from an undercover operation that occurred Tuesday. In an affidavit, an undercover TBI agent states he was offered sex in exchange for cash during the operation.

On Wednesday, authorities found approximately $8,000 cash, including buy money used during the undercover operation; sexual aids, i.e. massage oils, condoms; and documents from EroticMP.com, where customers post reviews and discussed sexual activity from VIP Spa.

Since VIP Spa is located 1.3 miles from United Christian Academy, the prostitution charges were bumped from a Class C to Class A misdemeanors.

2011 bust

In April 2011, authorities with the Dickson police, FBI, TBI, Internal Revenue Service and immigration services served a multi-county, state search warrant on VIP Spa. Two female workers, not among those charged Wednesday, were arrested April 14, 2011, during a raid of the Dickson business. They were charged with patronizing prostitution at the establishment.

The 2011 arrests were the culmination of a nearly yearlong investigation that started in June 2010 when Dickson police started to receive complaints about the business. Authorities in Humphreys County also raided GQ Health Spa in Hurricane Mills. That spa was believed to be linked to VIP Spa.

As the Colorado summer quickly approaches, it is important to remember to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. While we are blessed with over 300 sunny days per year on average, our high elevation curses us by putting us closer to the sun and at higher risk for sunburns, sun damage and skin cancer. Colorado has the highest skin cancer rates in the nation — nearly 30 percent higher than the nationwide rate, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment — so it’s important to stay informed and diligent about sun protection.

The widely believed notion that most sun damage occurs before the age of 18 has been proven false by newer studies that show incidental sun exposure as adults actually accounts for more than half of the sun damage received by the average person over a lifetime. So, just a short mid-morning walk, a quick nine holes of golf, or chatting up a neighbor outdoors for 20 minutes in the late afternoon can contribute to sun damage. All of those unassuming moments spent outdoors add up to hours, days and weeks of long-term damage caused by UV radiation. Colorado residents need to take extra care to protect from the sun, because UV radiation increases 10-12 percent for every 3,000 feet of elevation gain.

Repeated unprotected sun exposure over a 20-year span dramatically increases the risk of skin cancer and pre-cancerous lesions. Unlike other cancers that peak in the later years of life, malignant melanoma is common in young adults in their 20s and 30s. In fact, melanoma is the leading cause of cancer death in young women aged 18-34, and the second-leading cause of cancer death in young men of the same age group. Melanoma is much less common than non-melanoma skin cancer, but its incidence appears to be increasing and it can be fatal in some cases, according to the CDPHE. Social trends favoring tanned skin, increased popularity of tanning beds and a reduction in the protective ozone layer are several factors contributing to higher rates.

One person dies every hour in this country from skin cancer. That is a staggering fact considering skin cancer is one of the easiest cancers to treat and cure if detected early. To spot skin cancer, look for changing brown moles, spots that bleed easily and areas of the skin that repeatedly crust and never quite heal. It is important to perform self-checks of skin regularly and to visit your health care provider to have a skin check at least every one to two years as a part of overall health maintenance.

Sun protection is, of course, the first step in avoiding skin cancer. Clothing should always be considered as the first line of defense. A hat can do wonders for preventing sun damage. Statistics show that there is a 10 percent reduction in skin cancer of the face with every 1 inch of a brim on a hat. Sun protective T-shirts, swim shirts and pants are now much more widely available in sporting goods stores and online. Many of these garments are made with a lightweight, tightly woven fabric to allow cooling while offering sun protection.

Sunscreens can also be very helpful if used appropriately. Instead of only looking at SPF, pay attention to the active ingredients. Transparent zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are excellent physical blockers of UV rays. Chemical sunscreens are degraded more quickly by the sun, but newer formulations seem to be more stable. Look for avobenzone in the active ingredient list. Most importantly, re-apply sunscreen every 90 minutes when outside, especially when sweating or when spending time in the water. Visit The Woodhouse Day Spa in Castle Pines for Skin Ceuticals line of sunscreens with sheer zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. This line is cosmetically elegant and can protect your skin from our high-elevation rays in Colorado.

<ul
