Day Spa Directory

It isn't always easy to find a good day spa in your area in the UK, especially if you are travelling around the country and find yourself in unfamiliar territory.

Spa World are compiling a definitive list of UK Day Spas, listed by County and Town.

It's free to have an entry with your name, address etc. If you want to have a hyperlink, photos, logos and your spa menu, it costs around a fiver a week to be really visible, so it's good value!

There has been something of a revolution happening across the gardens in Britain, with water features of a different kind making an appearance. Hot tubs have become, if you’ll pardon the pun, one of the hottest lifestyle accessories.

It’s a well documented fact that we are working longer hours and enduring greater levels of stress, so any leisure time we have, particularly during those long, balmy summer evenings, is precious. Relaxing and socialising with friends and family has assumed greater importance, and hot tubs have become one of the most enjoyable ways of doing just that.

After a hard day at the office, what could be better than sharing a steaming, bubbling tub with good company and a glass of something chilled? Think about it, jets of warm water, massaging your work-worn and stressed-out body while you relax and relieve the tensions of the day.

Some are even taking their spa experience a step further and turning their home into a luxurious spa resort by adding a sauna or steam room. Add a selection of home fitness equipment and who needs to join the local health club?

But surely you need to be a millionaire to afford such indulgent luxury? Not at all! Hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms come in all shapes and sizes to suit all budgets, and adding a hot tub or swim spa can also add real value to your home. No wonder the home spa industry is booming, as people discover that they too can take the plunge!

You can install a bubbling Jacuzzi in your bathroom, but a hot tub in your garden enables you to enjoy the great outdoors. It can be housed in a lovely wood gazebo or left freestanding on a decked patio. A hot tub may even inspire you to create a new barbecue area for home entertainment, complete with hot tub and sauna, and don’t worry about finding a sunny spot – hot tubs are an all-year-round luxury.

Hot tubs originated in Finland, where their substantial and very real health benefits have been known for centuries, but in the UK we are only just realising that hydrotherapy is more than delicious relaxation. It’s also the harbinger of better health and deep massage.

Hydrotherapy Health Benefits
The word hydrotherapy (from the Greek world ‘hydro’, which means water) describes the therapeutic use of water in baths, steam baths, steam inhalation, in-water and underwater massage, hot springs, hot, cold or alternating showers and, of course, hot tubs.

As with any form of hydrotherapy there are a number of positive health benefits to be gained from using a hot tub. The buoyancy takes the pressure off aching joins and tired muscles, as well as improving circulation and joint mobility, while the hydro-massage provided by water jets relieves muscle tension and stimulates the body’s natural healing process. Bathing in hot water also dilates blood vessels, increases body fluid and enhances cardiac output without putting extra strain on the heart.

Spas are an excellent stress-buster and an effective means of improving sleep and relaxation. They can also provide relief from chronic conditions such as arthritis and migraine. During a soak in a hot tub, the water jets pummel all parts of the body to relax and stimulate muscle tone and boost blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, which also helps in detoxing.

A number of athletes, including stars of football and rugby, are investing in home hot tubs for post-exercise therapy. Dorian Davis of Sundance Spas has sold spas to many of the UK’s sporting celebrities including ex-England cricket captain David Gower, ex-Arsenal footballer Tony Adams and Welsh rugby captain Ieuan Evans.

“Hot tubs have tangible hydrotherapy benefits for sportsmen and women. Our parent company in the USA is endorsed by American football, basketball and baseball teams who use hot tubs to speed up the recovery of players who are injured during the game. This kind of therapy is believed to cut the recovery time in half – in fact many teams give hot tubs as part of the signing package when taking on new players,” says Dorian Davis.

Style versus budget
If you are thinking about buying a hot tub, spend a little time thinking about what you want from your spa. Is it just for fun and family? Do you want to maximise the health benefits or target particular aches and pains? How many people will use it and how often? How much money do you want to spend?

You can choose from a compact tub for two or move into the party scene with a six-person version, you’ll be surprised at how popular you’ll become with friends and neighbours! Throw a Spa-B-Q and really enjoy the summer months – or just simply lay back and enjoy hydrotherapy at all times of year, on sunny days or moonlit nights.

Structure and maintenance
Most tubs consist of an inner shell, formed from a durable acrylic, surrounded by wooden panelling to give a more authentic, natural appearance the number and variety of jets varies according to range and price.

Once installed, tubs are easy to run. Water quality is often maintained by in-built filters and ozone systems, with chlorine and bromide added to help sanitize the water. Even during hosepipe bans, many water companies across the UK still allow you to fill hot tubs, which typically hold around 350 gallons of water. The efficient, modern filtration systems used with most tubs ensures you only need drain down and refill your tub every four months.

Buying your tub
A word of caution: buying a spa needs knowledge. You need to understand the value of all the different kinds of mechanisms and you need to work out what’s right for you and your family. Don’t be swamped by the sales jargon. Make sure you have the facts and know enough about what’s available before you make your choice. Do try before you buy. Reputable spa retailers offer you the opportunity to test out options in a wet-test area and only by doing that will you be able to make an informed decision. So take your swimwear along to the showroom and take a dip.

What Spa isn’t tied into any particular retailer nor do they promote any specific manufacturer, which means that you can be confident you’re getting reliable information, which will never leave you waving and drowning.

Add value to your home
For most of us, buying a house is the biggest investment we’ll ever make but we don’t always think so carefully about protecting and developing that investment to its maximum potential.

We know about putting in a new kitchen or double-glazing, perhaps adding a conservatory, but we don’t always think of less obvious additions and charges that will increase the value of our property. Installing a spa is a financial commitment, for sure. However, it will enrich the value of your property at the same time as enriching your own home life.

Dirty Spas -The big turn Off

We recently visited a well known spa in the south west of England, famous for its combination of fine dining, well-stocked cellars, wonderful accommodation and the ubiquitous spa.

It seemed that this hotel's reputation was the underpinning for well-heeled guests looking for a relaxing weekend spa break.

We arrived on a Sunday afternoon on a long hot early summer day. Clearly there had been some serious al-fresco lunching going on - judging by the piles of un-cleared crockery and glassware on the tables outside. The first impresion was of a poorly-managed establishment.

When we hit the spa area there were empty glasses around the pool, wet towells thrown on the floor and a general reflection of a laissez faire management style.

When we hit the spa, there was a foaming crud floating in the jacuzzi, the sauna had two inches of standing, sweaty water on the floor. The therapy rooms looked unkempt and the changing rooms had hair and dirt on the floor.

Not only did this spa hotel let itself down, it also let down the whole luxury hotel industry. Heaven knows what a first timer into a spa would have thought -enough to turn them off forever i would have thought.

So, come on spa operators -we don't mind paying for quality service, as long as that is what we get.

Therapists who smell of fags-the BIG turn off!
