BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – Excitement is building across Viera as the adrenaline-fueled Space Coast Bulls and Barrels event returns to Space Coast Daily Park on May 15 and 16, promising two nights of heart-pounding rodeo action for fans of all ages.

Presented by Space Coast Daily and sponsored by Kelly Ford, the event will showcase skilled riders taking on powerful bulls and lightning-fast barrel racing competitors in a display of athleticism, courage, and precision.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. each evening, with the main show kicking off at 7:30 p.m.

This year’s event will feature expanded seating to accommodate growing crowds, reflecting the increasing popularity of rodeo entertainment along Florida’s Space Coast.

Spectators can expect a lively atmosphere filled with thrilling rides, crowd engagement, and family-friendly fun.

Tickets are priced at $20 in advance through MyTicketFox and $25 at the gate.

Families are especially encouraged to attend, as children ages seven and under will be admitted free. Parking will be available on site for five dollars per vehicle.

The venue, located at 5775 Stadium Parkway, is well known for hosting large-scale community events, and this rodeo production continues to build on that reputation.

With professional riders, a dynamic production team, and strong local sponsorship, Space Coast Bulls and Barrels is shaping up to be one of the must-see events of the spring season.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Eastern Florida State College men’s tennis team enjoyed its best finish in program history, placing third in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament at Collin College in Plano, Texas.

“It was a stellar week of tennis for Eastern Florida State College, and I am immensely proud of this group,” Eastern Florida State College men’s tennis coach Nick Rosatti said.

“It was a joy to watch our guys make a huge comeback to secure a podium position. We played extremely well in doubles, which proved to be the difference.”

The No. 2 doubles team of Johan Mottlau and Filip Sormaz brought home a national title, winning the championship with a straight sets win over Pratt’s Kenta Kawada and Thiofhi Tshivhase in straight sets to win the title and become the second doubles team in program history to win a national championship.

The first set was back and forth, with Mottlau and Sormaz getting the break, then being broken to make it 2-2. The Pratt duo took a 4-2 lead, but the Titans responded with another break to tie things 4-4.

It would be tied 6-6 with Mottlau and Sormaz picking up the gutsy win in a tight 8-6 tiebreaker, posting the 7-6 win in the first set.

They continued to play well, jumped out to a 4-0 lead, and locked up the title with a 6-2 win.

Mottlau and Sormaz came into the tournament as the No. 4 seed in No. 2 doubles and defeated the No. 5 seed before beating the No. 1 seed to make the final. Then, in the final, they defeated the No. 2 seed for the title.

“I am excited for Johan and Filip for winning the National Championship! I am so proud of them and know that they are outstanding young men, and I had the privilege of coaching them in the fall. So happy for both of them,” Eastern Florida State College Associate Vice President of Athletics Jeff Carr said.

Pablo Garcia was in the championship final at No. 3 singles as the No. 6 seed’s run ended with a runner-up finish as he fell to the No. 1 seed, Kenta Kawada from Pratt Community College.

Garcia got off to a fast start, but Kawada battled back to win the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6.

Garcia could not get back on track and fell 6-2 in the second set. The sophomore was the No. 6 seed and defeated both the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds to reach the finals.

The No. 1 doubles team of Fernando Martinez and Salva Mulet also finished in second place as they lost in the final, 6-3, 6-4 to Pratt’s Sam Dineen and Kenneth Rabinad Vila.

“Of our three finals matches, all three of them were against the overall champion, Pratt Community College, and we were able to win one of those,” Rosatti said.

The Titans did win a pair of consolation final matches on Thursday.

Mottlau came back from being down 5-4 to defeat Weatherford’s Andres Serrano 8-5 and claim the title. Mottlau finished the tournament 2-1, rebounding from a quarterfinals loss to win the consolation title.

Tomas Kurz Cardozo dominated on Thursday, winning the consolation final 8-1 against USC Sumter’s Andrew Griffith. Cardozo also went 2-1 in the tournament after losing in the quarterfinals.

The doubles team of Cordozo and Pablo Garcia lost in the consolation finals, 8-5.

The team finished with five All-Americans, which is a program record and just the third national championship in school history.

“This doubles national championship reflects the grit and competitive spirit of our men’s tennis team,” said Eastern Florida State College President Dr. Jim Richey.

“Facing one of the most rigorous tournaments in the country, our student-athletes rose to the challenge and proved they belong at the very top of NJCAA Division I tennis. We are incredibly proud of their perseverance, teamwork, and the way they represented our college in Plano. Congratulations to Coach Nick Rosatti and the entire team. Go, Titans!”

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Some men follow their fathers into sport. Some women follow their moms. For Lisa Davidson, softball was a mother-daughter thing.

“My mom was an awesome third baseman with the Zephyrs adult team in Satellite Beach,” said Davidson.

“I was always around when they would play, and I always had my glove in hand.”

Born at Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center, Davidson was throwing softballs almost simultaneously as learning to walk.

By the time she was six years old, she was involved in girls’ traveling teams, progressing from Percy’s Junior Lassies to the Lassies and to the Mets, all Satellite Beach teams.

Because she lived in Indialantic, she switched to the local Sharks, much to the Mets’ consternation.

Not to worry, however, for Davidson was soon returning to Satellite Beach.

Her home address listed her as attending Melbourne High School, where she spent a year, but the family soon moved to Satellite Beach so Davidson could play ball with the superior Satellite High School softball team.

“The team was so much better,” she said.

“It was a huge thing for us to move, because we didn’t have much money, but my mom thought it would give me the edge I needed for a scholarship.”

Mom was right.

REMARKABLE TRANSITION TO FAST PITCH

After snagging the team championship for Satellite and enjoying an incredible and totally legit .809 batting average in her senior year, Davidson was recruited by the Lady Seminoles at Florida State University, an impressive accomplishment, particularly when considering that she had only played slow pitch in high school, while the Lady Seminoles were a fast pitch team, requiring intensive batting practice on Davidson’s part to come up to speed in zeroing in on those 80-miles-per-hour pitches.

Davidson was a fast learner. As a freshman, she stepped in and led the team with a .341 batting average.

The Lady Seminoles themselves were transitioning, as was Davidson, as they stepped into a new conference, the ACC, and claimed the first ACC title in any sport, thanks in large part to Davidson, which dominated the conference.

She led the ACC in triples and was ranked in the league’s top 10 in five other categories.

Her platinum exploits on the diamond earned her the ACC Tournament’s Most Valuable Player title in 1993. She was an all-tournament selection at the UNC Invitational.

Davidson was the second Lady Seminoles to be named an All-American. She finished her career with four consecutive ACC Championships and three World Series appearances.

In 2003, almost 10 years after she graduated, Davidson was honored again when the ACC organized a 50th-anniversary team for each sport, and she was selected as one of 24 Florida State softball players on the squad.

After college, Davidson played semi-professional ball in San Antonio, Texas, for five years.

With a master’s in English, she taught high school for 15 years in South Florida before joining her mom at the family business, Dogleg Sportswear in Orlando.

Daughter Taylor carries on the athletic tradition in her own sport, soccer. You can expect another Hall of Famer in the family.

“She’s a much better athlete than I ever was, and I expect will be highly recruited,” says the proud Davidson.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Fresh from Florida highlights this delicious Florida Vegetable & Egg Bake recipe. This nutrient-packed breakfast is a great way to start your day.

INGREDIENTS

■ 10 Florida eggs

■ 2 (8-ounce) tubes of croissant dough

■ 1/3 cup Florida mushrooms, sliced thin

■ 1/3 cup Florida sweet peppers, diced

■ 1/4 cup Florida zucchini, diced

■ 1/4 cup Florida yellow squash, diced

■ 1 cup Jack cheese, shredded

■ 1/3 cup bacon, cooked and chopped

■ 1 teaspoon of your favorite seasoning blend

■ Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

PREPARATION

■ Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together eggs and seasoning blend.

■ Open both tubes of croissant dough and unroll them on a clean cutting board.

■ Using a knife, slice along all the connecting lines, then cut each triangle in half lengthwise.

■ Roll up each piece of cut croissant dough, starting at the big end, until all of them have been rolled into what looks like mini croissants.

■ Line your medium to large-sized cast-iron pan or baking dish all the way around with the rolled croissant dough pieces to form a crust.

■ Pour the whisked eggs into the lined pan. Start adding the vegetables, bacon, and cheese to the pan.

■ Once finished, lightly season the eggs with salt and fresh ground pepper.

■ Place the pan in the oven and cook for 15 to 25 minutes until the eggs are cooked throughout and the croissants are golden brown. Remove from oven and serve warm.

■ Fresh Tip: Let each member of the family add the toppings they prefer to their assigned portion of the omelet bake.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Dinner and a show for $25 is a sweet deal, but it’s even sweeter when Melbourne Municipal Band’s Rock & Roll Revue rocks the house for a good cause.

The eight-piece ensemble, complete with a male vocalist and a Doo-Wop trio, will perform at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 29, during a dinner show that benefits Martin Andersen Senior Center in Rockledge.

Founded in 1983, the Senior Center provides older area residents with essential resources and opportunities for social connections.

Now in its 61st season, the Melbourne Municipal Band provides free, high-quality concerts to the community and nurtures the next generation of musicians through youth education and performance initiatives.

Founded in 1965, the MMB is an integral part of the Space Coast cultural community, serving more than 21,000 attendees each year through concerts, dances, and other ensemble performances.

The band’s 80-plus members and auxiliary volunteers spend 30,000 hours each year on rehearsals and performances.

During the performance on May 29, attendees will enjoy a lasagna-and-salad dinner, followed by classic dance tunes from the revue.

“The audience can expect music from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s by several of their favorite artists for their dancing and listening pleasure,” said Rock & Roll Revue conductor Art Martin.

Joining the musicians and vocalist, Jeremy Lundquist will be the Swingtimers Vocal Trio of Connie Maltby, Diana Sageser, and Dave Hutson.

Maltby, who moved to St. Augustine last year, is back in town and thrilled to sing again. She sang with the Brevard Chorale, Space Coast Symphony Orchestra, and, of course, the Swingtimers Trio for many years.

You can catch her in The Sound of Music this summer at the Limelight Theatre in St. Augustine.

Sageser has been singing away with the Swingtimers for a decade.

“I come from a very musical family, one that used to sing harmonies together while we were setting and clearing the table after dinner,” she said.

Sageser has played percussion with both MMB and the Melbourne Community Orchestra and has also played and sung with the Harbor City Dance Band.

The multi-talented Sageser has also performed as a living history interpreter and a professional clown.

“My grandmother was involved in vaudeville, so I guess it’s in my blood,” she said.

Hutson, founder and director of the Swingtimers, has been singing close harmony since high school, when he was part of a folk music group.

When he joined MMB’s Swingtime Big Band as a sax player, Hutson formed the Swingtimers to sing swing music of that era.

The group has since expanded its repertoire to include songs reminiscent of Manhattan Transfer.

Hutson also sings in the Oh Golly Dixieland Band and the 321 Jazz Orchestra and plays sax for the New Horizons Band. He is the founder and director of the Adagio Sax Quartet.

Rock & Roll Revue conductor Art Martin attended the legendary Juilliard School of Music in New York City.

He taught in New Jersey public schools for more than 40 years and served as an adjunct instructor of music at Montclair State University.

Martin has been a member of the Melbourne Swingtime big band, Melbourne Municipal Band, and The Oh Golly Dixieland Band, and has played a variety of woodwind instruments in the pit orchestras at the Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse and the Henegar Center.

He also performed with the Space Coast Pops and Central Florida Winds. He is currently the band leader for Rock & Roll Revue and the Oh Golly Dixieland Band.

BREVARD COUNTY • CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – The 34th SpaceX commercial resupply mission under contract with NASA is headed to the International Space Station with new scientific experiments after lifting off at 6:05 p.m. EDT Friday on a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

The SpaceX spacecraft, loaded with nearly 6,500 pounds of cargo for the space station’s Expedition 74 crew, is scheduled to autonomously dock at about 7 a.m. Sunday, May 17, to the forward port of the station’s Harmony module.

In addition to cargo for the crew aboard the space station, Dragon will deliver several new experiments, including a project to determine how well Earth-based simulators mimic microgravity conditions, a bone scaffold made from wood that could produce new treatments for fragile bone conditions like osteoporosis, and equipment to help researchers evaluate how red blood cells and the spleen change in space.

The Dragon spacecraft also will carry a new instrument to study charged particles around Earth that can impact power grids and satellites, an investigation that could provide a fundamental understanding of how planets form, and an instrument designed to take highly accurate measurements of sunlight reflected by Earth and the Moon.

These experiments are just a sample of the hundreds of investigations conducted aboard the orbiting laboratory in the areas of biology and biotechnology, physical sciences, and Earth and space science. For more than 25 years, people have lived and worked continuously aboard the International Space Station, advancing scientific knowledge and making research breakthroughs that aren’t possible on Earth.

The space station helps NASA understand and overcome the challenges of human spaceflight, expand commercial opportunities in low Earth orbit, and build on the foundation for long-duration missions to the Moon, as part of the Artemis program, and to Mars.

The Dragon spacecraft is scheduled to remain at the station until mid-June, when it will depart and return to Earth with time-sensitive research and cargo, ahead of splashing down off the coast of California.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – More than 821 Eastern Florida State College students walked across the Commencement stage on Thursday, May 14, at the 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. ceremonies.

This spring, a total of 1,950 students were eligible to receive diplomas.

“Excitement, that’s the biggest feeling right now,” says Madeleine Dumonteil, who is completing her associate in arts degree alongside her younger sister, Gianna.

“It’s really special and sentimental to be graduating together, and it makes the moment even more meaningful.”

Madeleine’s accolades at EFSC include serving as EFSC’s SGA President and the Cocoa Campus’ Activity Board Chair.

Gianna, a dual-enrolled student, is graduating with both her high school diploma and two-year college degree simultaneously.

Although three years apart, the sisters are walking across the commencement stage together at the 11 a.m. ceremony—a milestone they share as “each other’s best friend.”

Madeleine, interested in the non-profit sector, plans to continue on to earn her bachelor’s degree in business management at the University of Central Florida, while Gianna pursues biological sciences at Tallahassee State College before transferring to Florida State University.

“We’re always together. In the fall, it’ll be our first time being separated,” says Gianna.

“It’s bittersweet, but we’re both looking forward to experiencing university life, meeting new people, and getting our foot in the door.”

The Dumonteil sisters are not the only family crossing the commencement stage together. Dual-enrolled cousins Karleigh and Evan Burnette have been completing their education together since high school and earned many of their college credits in the same classroom.

“It’s cool to be graduating the same day, same class, walking the same stage as your cousin,” says Evan, with Karleigh adding, “Not a lot of people get to do that all at the same time.”

Their post-graduation plans include a shared celebratory party, followed by a vacation.

While both plan to pursue bachelor’s degrees, Evan will attend UCF to study business, while Karleigh will attend UF to study finance with the aim of becoming a personal financial advisor.

“Business is something important that I think everybody should learn,” says Evan. “That kind of knowledge will benefit any job I choose.”

His advice for future graduates: “Don’t procrastinate, and turn in your work on time.”

For Alexis Hankerson, completing her associate of arts degree is an act of courage and resilience following the tragic loss of her sister.

“In 2012, my sister inspired me to go to school, ultimately to do something in the healthcare field—something out of the ordinary for my family,” says Alexis.

“In the fall of 2014, my sister passed away. It crushed my hopes, my dreams—it crushed everything.”

Ten years later, on the anniversary of her sister’s passing, Alexis “had this little voice in my head telling me, ‘Go back to school, go back to school’. I thought, ‘That’s my sister’ ”.

She signed up for her remaining classes, officially stepping back onto the campus in January 2025.

“Now here I am in May 2026, graduating with my associate in arts,” says Alexis.

“This is a milestone that I’ve not only reached but overcome. I hope I’m able to encourage and inspire someone else.”

Following graduation, Alexis plans to return to EFSC in Summer 2027 to complete the A.S. in Radiography, with the goal of pursuing a subsequent bachelor’s degree and entering the healthcare field, achieving the dream fostered by her sister.

College President Dr. Jim Richey congratulated all the graduates, telling the crowds, “You are the best and brightest, and are now an integral part of the legacy of success that is EFSC. The world needs you. We need your talents, imagination, creativity, and hard work. You are the Titan Nation.”

Both ceremonies were broadcast live on WEFS-TV and livestreamed via YouTube.

Graduates, family, and friends can post their photos and videos on social media using the hashtag #EFSCGrad to be part of the virtual social wall.

EFSC’s newest alumni join more than 130,000 others who have earned their diplomas from the college since it opened in 1960 with one campus.

Today, four campuses span the Space Coast from Titusville to Palm Bay, with almost four dozen programs also available completely online.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Hundreds of supporters are expected to gather Saturday night at Melbourne Orlando International Airport to welcome home Brevard County veterans returning from the latest Space Coast Honor Flight mission to Washington, D.C.

The event marks the second of five Honor Flight missions scheduled for 2026, with Melbourne Orlando International Airport serving as the presenting sponsor.

The May 16 Welcome Home Celebration is scheduled from 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. inside the airport terminal and is free and open to the public.

“The Melbourne Orlando International Airport and Space Coast Honor Flight have been working together for more than three years to conduct Honor Flights from our hometown,” said Rear Admiral James Hart, USN (Ret.), SCHF President. “

“This partnership culminated in three smooth flights and spectacular homecomings for our veterans. The community support has been nothing short of incredible.”

Airport and Space Coast Honor Flight officials are encouraging the community to line the terminal with American flags, handmade signs, and patriotic colors as veterans arrive home following their daylong trip to visit the nation’s war memorials.

Saturday’s mission is sponsored by Mederi CAREtenders Hospice, while the evening’s entertainment will feature live music from Andrew Rickman & The No Pressure Band during the airport’s “Red, White & You” pre-flight celebration.

Food trucks, giveaways, and beer service for adults 21 and older are also planned before the veterans’ arrival.

According to Space Coast Honor Flight organizers, terminal doors open at 8 p.m., with festivities beginning at 8:30 p.m., and the veterans’ flight is expected to arrive around 9:34 p.m.

The featured “Veterans Walk of Honor” is expected to begin around 10 p.m. as veterans make their way through cheering crowds inside the terminal.

Space Coast Honor Flight is a nonprofit organization that provides veterans with free trips to Washington, D.C., allowing them to visit memorials dedicated to their military service and sacrifice.

The organization primarily serves World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans, with each veteran accompanied by a guardian escort throughout the trip.

Melbourne Orlando International Airport officials are encouraging residents from across the Space Coast to attend and show their appreciation for those who served.

“Each Honor Flight from MLB is a reminder of the deep gratitude our community feels for those who have served,” said Greg Donovan, A.A.E., executive director of MLB.

“It was an honor to see these missions take off from our hometown airport, and we’re thankful for the dedication of everyone who made them possible, from our staff and partners to the incredible volunteers who make these days so meaningful.”

The Welcome Home celebrations have become one of the Space Coast’s most recognizable patriotic traditions, drawing veterans groups, scout troops, civic organizations, and families from across Brevard County.

Featured community participants often include honor guards, veteran organizations, patriotic performers, and volunteers who help create the hero’s welcome atmosphere at the airport terminal.

Organizers are encouraging attendees to bring family members, wave flags, and help create a memorable and heartfelt homecoming.

Airport officials said free parking will be available for attendees, and community members are encouraged to arrive early due to the large expected crowds.

Additional Welcome Home celebrations are planned throughout the year at MLB Airport on June 13, Sept. 12, and Oct. 17.
