BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – Joshua Manns has admitted responsibility in the 2021 death of 3-year-old Jameson Nance, pleading guilty to second-degree murder and several related abuse charges just as his murder trial was set to begin.

Manns entered the guilty plea on Wednesday morning in Brevard County Circuit Court in Viera, bringing an end to a criminal case that had been pending for nearly five years.

The plea came as jury selection was underway for what had been scheduled as a first-degree murder trial.

Manns had originally been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse in connection with the death of Nance. Prosecutors alleged the child suffered fatal injuries as a result of abuse.

Under an agreement reached with the State Attorney’s Office, Manns pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, child neglect causing great bodily harm, and child abuse.

In exchange, prosecutors agreed to a sentence that would avoid a lengthy trial and eliminate the possibility of a death sentence.

The plea agreement calls for Manns to receive a 60-year prison sentence for the second-degree murder conviction. He is scheduled to be formally sentenced on Monday.

Court records indicate Manns will also receive concurrent sentences on the remaining charges, including a 30-year sentence for aggravated child abuse. Because the sentences will run concurrently, they will be served at the same time as the 60-year sentence.

The case stems from the death of Nance in 2021, a tragedy that drew significant attention due to the young age of the victim and the serious nature of the allegations.

During Monday’s sentencing hearing, family members and others affected by the child’s death are expected to have an opportunity to address the court through victim impact statements.

Such statements allow survivors and loved ones to describe how the crime has affected their lives before a sentence is formally imposed.

By entering the guilty plea, Manns waived his right to a jury trial, bringing the criminal proceedings to a close without the need for jurors to hear evidence and determine a verdict.

The sentencing hearing on Monday is expected to finalize the terms of the plea agreement and officially conclude one of Brevard County’s most serious child-abuse homicide cases in recent years.

BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA — The Valiant Air Command will celebrate America’s 250th Birthday on Saturday, July 4, with a special Open Cockpit Day and a full schedule of family-friendly activities at the museum.

The event will be held at the Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m, which is home to one of Florida’s largest collections of historic military aircraft.

Visitors are encouraged to spend the day exploring the museum’s exhibits while participating in the Independence Day festivities.

Guests will have the opportunity to step inside nine historic aircraft cockpits and experience aviation history firsthand.

Museum docents will be available throughout the day to share the history, missions, and unique features of each aircraft, providing visitors with an engaging and educational experience.

As part of the celebration, Veterans will receive free admission with valid identification, and First Responders will be admitted for $15 with proof of service. Reduced admission rates will be available for children.

Construction is wrapping up at Wakit Rakit’s new courts inside the historic La Cita Country Club. The Grand Opening is a few weeks away — but locals can get on court now through “Intro to Padel” classes during the soft launch.

BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA — The most addictive and fastest-growing sport in the world is about to have a home on Florida’s Space Coast as construction is nearing completion on Wakit Rakit Titusville, the first padel club in Brevard County, built inside the historic La Cita Country Club at 778 Country Club Drive.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Brevard County real estate market delivered a tale of two sectors in May 2026. Single-family home sales pulled back from last year’s pace, while the condominium and townhouse market showed renewed strength.

Despite fewer overall transactions, home values remained stable, inventory tightened meaningfully, and buyer demand continued to support the market.

For homeowners in Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, Merritt Island, Viera, Melbourne, Satellite Beach, Indian Harbor Beach, Melbourne Beach, Rockledge, Cocoa, and Titusville, the latest numbers suggest the market is becoming increasingly selective rather than declining.

Buyers are still active. Sellers can still achieve excellent results. The difference today is that pricing, presentation, and marketing matter more than ever.

Single-Family Homes: Fewer Closings, Higher Prices

Brevard County recorded 908 closed single-family home sales during May 2026, a 14.0% decrease from the 1,056 sales reported in May 2025.

New pending sales declined 3.1%, while new listings fell 7.4%, indicating a slight slowdown in overall activity from both buyers and sellers.

One of the most significant shifts was a 33.2% decrease in cash sales.

While cash remains a major component of the Space Coast market, particularly among retirees, investors, and second-home buyers, more purchasers are financing their homes than in previous years.

Despite fewer sales, prices remained remarkably resilient. The median sales price increased 2.7% year-over-year to $385,000, up from $375,000 last May.

Inventory also tightened considerably, dropping from 4.6 months of supply to 3.7 months.

That decline keeps Brevard County well below the six-month threshold generally considered a balanced market and is one of the most telling signals in this month’s report.

Traditional sales accounted for the vast majority of activity, while foreclosure sales increased modestly and short sales remained a very small share of overall transactions.

What This Means for Single-Family Sellers and Buyers

Today’s market is a rewarding strategy. The days of simply placing a sign in the yard and waiting for multiple offers are largely behind us.

Buyers are carefully comparing properties, scrutinizing condition, evaluating insurance costs, and paying close attention to value.

Homes that are professionally marketed, properly prepared, and accurately priced continue to generate strong activity.

Properties that miss the mark often experience longer marketing times, fewer showings, and eventual price reductions.

For buyers, there are more opportunities today than during the ultra-competitive market of 2021 and 2022, but inventory remains relatively constrained.

Desirable homes in strong locations, particularly waterfront properties and updated homes priced appropriately, continue to attract attention quickly.

Buyers who have been waiting on the sidelines will find more negotiating power than we’ve seen in recent years, while still benefiting from stable long-term values.

Condo and Townhouse Market: Demand Returns

While the single-family market slowed, Brevard County’s condo and townhouse sector gained meaningful momentum in May 2026.

Closed sales increased 12.5% year-over-year, rising from 208 transactions to 234.

Even more encouraging, new pending sales surged by 20.7%, signaling stronger buyer demand heading into the summer season. At the same time, new listings declined by 11.0%, adding pressure on available inventory.

The median condo and townhouse sales price remained stable at $275,000, up slightly from $273,500 one year ago.

Months of supply fell dramatically from 8.8 months to 6.9 months, the single largest improvement of any metric in this report and a clear sign that the condo sector is absorbing inventory at an accelerating pace.

Cash sales also increased 13.9%, demonstrating continued confidence among retirees, investors, and second-home buyers.

What This Means for Condo Sellers and Buyers

The condo market appears to be regaining traction after a challenging period marked by rising insurance costs, reserve funding requirements, and buyer concerns regarding statewide condominium legislation.

Communities with completed milestone inspections, healthy reserve accounts, updated common areas, and strong management continue to outperform.

We’re seeing particular strength in desirable coastal communities such as Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral, where lifestyle, waterfront access, and limited inventory continue to attract buyers from both inside and outside Florida.

For condo buyers, inventory remains higher than in the single-family sector, creating opportunities for those seeking value, especially in coastal communities.

However, improving sales activity and rapidly declining inventory suggest the best opportunities may not remain available indefinitely.

Buyers should continue to evaluate association finances, reserve studies, upcoming assessments, insurance costs, and long-term maintenance plans before purchasing.

What We’re Seeing On The Ground

While countywide statistics provide an important overview, our day-to-day experience throughout Brevard County tells an even more compelling story.

Over the past several months, we’ve seen a growing separation between homes that are marketed strategically and homes that are simply listed for sale.

One of the most notable examples was our recent sale at 1470 Bay Shore Drive in Cocoa Beach. The seller had previously hired two different brokers over nearly two years without success.

After implementing a new pricing strategy, launching the property through Compass Private Exclusive, coordinating a full marketing rollout, and creating urgency through targeted exposure, we generated six showings in two days and secured a full-price cash offer.

We saw similar results at Emerald Seas Unit 515 in Cocoa Beach, where strong positioning and targeted marketing helped secure an over-asking-price sale shortly after it hit the market.

On the luxury side, waterfront properties continue attracting significant interest when priced appropriately.

Our recent record-setting sales at Solana on the River demonstrated that buyers remain willing to pay premium prices for exceptional properties with desirable views, updated interiors, and strong community amenities.

The lesson remains consistent across all of these results: properties are selling. But today’s buyers are rewarding value, presentation, pricing accuracy, and marketing execution.

Why Aerospace Growth Still Matters

One factor continuing to support Brevard County housing demand is the ongoing expansion of the Space Coast’s aerospace and defense industries.

Companies such as SpaceX, Blue Origin, L3Harris Technologies, and Northrop Grumman continue investing in facilities, infrastructure, and talent throughout the region.

These employers bring highly skilled professionals, engineers, executives, contractors, and support personnel to Brevard County, creating long-term demand for housing across multiple price points.

We’re seeing this firsthand through increased relocation activity from aerospace employees and executives seeking homes in Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, Merritt Island, Viera, Melbourne, Satellite Beach, and communities throughout the Space Coast.

This economic foundation remains one of the strongest reasons Brevard County continues to outperform many other Florida markets.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Learn how to make Florida Endive and Vegetable Meatball Soup.

Think of endive (Cichorium endivia) as the sophisticated cousin of lettuce. This cool-season leafy vegetable is often used in gourmet salad mixes, where it adds interesting texture and flavor.

Some forms of endive have broad leaves, while others have narrow, ruffled leaves. Curly endive is sometimes called frisee, while broad-leafed endive is called escarole.

Belgian endive, with its pale green, scoop-shaped leaves, is technically a different species.

All endive must be grown in cool weather, or else it will bolt. In Central and South Florida, it can be grown from December through March. In North Florida, it can be grown September through April, though it needs to be protected from freezes.

INGREDIENTS

■ 1 pound Florida lean ground beef

■ 1 cup Florida yellow squash, grated fine

■ 1 cup Florida zucchini, grated fine

■ 1 cup Florida mushrooms, chopped fine

■ 1 cup Florida carrot, shredded fine

■ 1 cup panko

■ 1 egg

■ 1/2 cup milk

■ 1 tablespoon all-purpose seasoning (your favorite)

■ 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

■ Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

Soup

■ 1 head Florida curly endive, rinsed and chopped

■ 1 cup Florida celery, rinsed and diced small

■ 2 cups Florida carrots, peeled and diced small

■ 1 can red kidney beans, drained

■ 10 cups low-sodium vegetable or chicken broth

■ 2 tablespoons fresh garlic, minced

■ 2 tablespoons fresh herbs (rosemary, thyme, oregano), chopped fine

■ Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

■ 1 tablespoon olive oil

■ Parmesan cheese for garnish, grated

PREPARATION

Meatballs

■ In a large mixing bowl, combine egg, milk, seasoning blend, and panko. Stir until well combined.

■ Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, stir the mixture again.

■ Add the ground beef and vegetables to the bread crumb mixture.

■Continue to mix the beef with all the ingredients until everything is uniformly incorporated.

■ Roll the meatball mixture into a small bite-sized ball and keep it refrigerated until use.

Soup

■ Preheat a large soup pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

■ Add the olive oil to the preheated pot. Carefully add the onions, celery, and carrots to the pot.

■ Cook ingredients for 5 to 7 minutes while stirring occasionally.

■ Add the garlic and fresh chopped herbs and cook for another 2 minutes.

■ Add the broth to the cooking ingredients in the pot. Bring the ingredients to a light boil, then reduce the heat to a slow boil.

■ Add the raw bite-sized meatballs to the simmering soup. And let it cook for another 10 minutes. Add the chopped curly Florida endive.

■ Taste the soup and adjust the seasoning with salt and fresh ground pepper to taste.

■ Serve soup hot, garnished with freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

The mission continues SpaceX’s record-setting launch pace from Brevard County, where both Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and NASA’s Kennedy Space Center have become among the world’s busiest spaceports.

BREVARD COUNTY • CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA — SpaceX is preparing for an early morning launch from Florida’s Space Coast as a Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled to lift off early Wednesday morning carrying three next-generation communications satellites for AST SpaceMobile.

For Space Coast residents accustomed to late-night rocket launches, Wednesday’s mission offers another opportunity to witness a Falcon 9 illuminate the predawn sky while advancing both commercial spaceflight and next-generation communications technology.

The mission, designated BlueBird 8-10, is targeting liftoff at 2:39 a.m. EDT on June 17 from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

The launch window extends until 4:15 a.m., providing additional opportunities should weather or technical considerations delay the initial attempt.

If successful, the Falcon 9 will place three AST SpaceMobile BlueBird satellites into low Earth orbit, expanding the company’s space-based cellular broadband network.

AST SpaceMobile is developing a satellite constellation designed to provide direct-to-cellphone connectivity, allowing standard mobile devices to connect to space-based broadband services without requiring specialized equipment.

Residents and visitors across Brevard and much of Central Florida should be able to see the rocket streak across the overnight sky as it follows a northeasterly trajectory from the Cape.

The launch is expected to produce a bright visual display, particularly for observers along the Space Coast.

Following liftoff, the Falcon 9’s first-stage booster will separate from the upper stage and begin its return journey to Earth.

The booster is slated to complete its 29th flight, further demonstrating SpaceX’s emphasis on rocket reusability.

After reentry and a controlled descent, the booster is expected to land aboard the autonomous drone ship A Shortfall of Gravitas, stationed in the Atlantic Ocean east of the Space Coast.

Weather conditions appear favorable for the overnight launch attempt.

According to the National Weather Service forecast, showers and thunderstorms are expected to move through the area before 11 p.m. Tuesday, followed by only a slight chance of lingering showers around midnight.

Skies are forecast to gradually clear overnight, with temperatures falling to around 77 degrees and light south-southwest winds near 5 mph.

The launch marks another milestone for AST SpaceMobile as the company continues building out its satellite network aimed at delivering broadband connectivity to areas where traditional cellular coverage is limited or unavailable.

The BlueBird satellites are designed to work directly with existing smartphones, potentially expanding access to communications in remote and underserved regions around the globe.

Known as “The Grand Old Lady,” the hotel, which was built in the early 1920s, was torn down in 1996 to make way for condos

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – For seven decades, the Brevard Hotel in Cocoa was among the most popular retreats for locals as well as tourists.  

Located on a four-acre estate overlooking the beautiful Indian River Lagoon, Brevard Hotel’s 18,000 square-foot estate offered 53 rooms for “rest and relaxation.”

Known as “The Grand Old Lady,” the hotel, which was built in the early 1920s, hosted many dignitaries – including Vice President Hubert Humphrey.

In 1990, reports surfaced that the hotel’s owner, Tony Ninos, was saddled with tax and property maintenance issues. In 1996, Ninos was forced to sell the property.

Ultimately, a condo developer purchased the land and constructed Magnolia Pointe Condominiums.

Bob Laycock has provided an interesting and detailed chronology of the hotel’s 1930s renovation and the subsequent events of its glory days.

“My dad’s father, Hartley C. Laycock, Sr., was president and chairman of the Board at the People’s Bank in Chicago when the market crashed, and the economy collapsed with the Depression,” said Laycock on his website, highlighting the history of the Brevard Hotel.

“He was a man of high moral and ethical standards, ensuring that depositors recovered as much of their money as possible. When the process was done, there was little left.”

Laycock went on to say:

Dad’s family sold the house they had just recently built and moved south to Florida. To help raise money for the family, my Dad’s brother, my Uncle Bill, bought a truck and hauled loads of fruit to Ohio. Dad joined him on some of these trips.

What followed is a remarkable story. As Dad’s father recovered from the Chicago ordeal he grew interested in an old abandoned hotel building — the Brevard Hotel — on the Indian River in Cocoa, a short distance from the ocean, Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach.

He envisioned restoring and reopening it, and headed back to Chicago to raise funds for the project. He was met there with tremendous generosity, raised more than hoped, and soon returned to Florida.

This story reminds me a bit of Jimmy Stewart in “It’s a Wonderful Life.” George Bailey does all he can to protect his depositors — and then karma kicks in.

After a complete renovation of the building, the new Brevard Hotel opened its doors in December 1934 and soon became a popular Winter getaway in Central Florida.

As a child, I recall we had a 78 rpm recording of a Betty Crocker radio show broadcast from the hotel. I listened over and over. That record is long gone, unfortunately, and I haven’t found any online archive that might have the broadcast. Too bad!

The Brevard welcomed famous guests over the years, including Vice President Hubert Humphrey, according to SpaceCoastDaily.com. Humphrey’s visit was after we had sold the hotel.

Among the regular Winter guests every year at the Brevard Hotel was Constance Emerson Geil, widow of Dr. William Edgar Geil and my Mom’s adoptive grandmother.

My parents met there at the Brevard Hotel and fell in love. They married up north at the Barrens, Geil’s estate in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia.

I have various memories of the hotel as a child, some quite funny.

Among them, I performed heart surgery on ladies in the lobby, much to everyone’s delight and amusement. I also recall the Brevard Hotel as a skyscraper despite being just two stories. Perspective is relative.

Our family sold the hotel in the early 1960s after my Uncle Bill died.

Eventually, in 1996, the owner at that time was forced to sell for financial reasons and the building was torn down to make room for the Oleander Pointe Condominiums. The hotel is a celebrated part of Cocoa’s history. Pieces of the building were salvaged before demolition and have been incorporated into other buildings in town.

“These were originally 35 mm slides that my husband took in the summer of 1957.  I scanned the slides into my computer and have had prints made of many of the slides that he took.  

“If I remember right, the room rates were incredibly low – less than $10 per day. They served a continental breakfast in the lobby. I do remember you paid for six days, and on the seventh day, there was no charge for your room. Wow! Have things changed!”

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — SpaceX’s historic public debut on the Nasdaq marks one of the most significant moments in the commercial space industry since the company was founded in 2002.

For Florida’s Space Coast, where SpaceX conducts the majority of its Falcon 9 launches from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Kennedy Space Center, the IPO could accelerate growth already transforming the region into the nation’s leading aerospace hub.

The company’s initial public offering, which raised approximately $85.7 billion and valued SpaceX at more than $1.7 trillion, is expected to have far-reaching impacts across the nation.

Brevard County has already experienced unprecedented growth from SpaceX operations.

The company has dramatically increased launch cadence from both Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center in recent years, helping Florida become the global leader in orbital launches.

Additional funding could support new launch pads, expanded integration facilities, larger workforce requirements, and increased demand for local contractors and suppliers.

Few places, however, are positioned to feel those effects more directly than Brevard County, home to the busiest launch complex in the world.

Industry analysts say the largest immediate benefit of SpaceX becoming a publicly traded company is access to enormous amounts of capital.

The company has indicated that future funding will support the expansion of Starship, Starlink, artificial intelligence initiatives, satellite infrastructure, and next-generation space transportation systems.

That investment could translate directly into additional facilities, launch infrastructure, manufacturing operations, and workforce expansion on the Space Coast.

Huge Economic Impact

The Space Coast economy has become increasingly tied to commercial spaceflight.

SpaceX employs thousands of workers across Florida, and its operations support numerous aerospace contractors, engineering firms, construction companies, logistics providers, and small businesses.

With billions of dollars in new capital available, local economic development officials could see expanded hiring throughout the aerospace sector.

Engineers, technicians, software developers, construction workers, and skilled tradespeople may all benefit if SpaceX accelerates development of future launch systems and satellite networks.

The ripple effect would likely extend beyond the space industry itself.

New workers moving to Brevard County would increase demand for housing, retail development, restaurants, schools, healthcare services, and transportation infrastructure.

Although SpaceX’s Starship testing program is currently centered at Starbase, Texas, many industry observers expect Florida to play a larger role in future Starship operations.

The company has been developing Starship launch infrastructure at Kennedy Space Center, and additional funding from public markets could help accelerate those projects.

A successful Starship program would likely bring additional jobs, tourism, and national attention to the Space Coast.

Starship is expected to support NASA lunar missions, future Mars exploration efforts, and large-scale satellite deployment.

Tourism and Real Estate Could See Continued Growth

Rocket launches have already become a major tourism draw for Brevard County, attracting visitors from around the world.

As SpaceX expands operations and increases launch frequency, hotels, restaurants, vacation rentals, and tourism-related businesses may continue to benefit from increased visitor traffic.

High-profile missions involving Starship, lunar exploration, and future crewed flights could generate even greater interest in the Space Coast as a destination.

Commercial real estate development may also accelerate as aerospace companies seek proximity to SpaceX and other space industry leaders operating from Florida.

For Brevard County, SpaceX’s public debut represents more than a financial milestone.

It signals the continued evolution of the Space Coast from a government-centered launch region into a global commercial space powerhouse.

With SpaceX now possessing unprecedented access to capital and investor support, local leaders expect the company’s presence on Florida’s Space Coast to remain a major driver of economic growth, job creation, and technological innovation for years to come.

BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – Residents and visitors gathered Sunday at Jetty Park to celebrate the grand opening of a new beachside pavilion and playground during a festive “Party in the Park” community event that coincided with Flag Day.

The celebration featured food, games, giveaways, and family-friendly activities as attendees explored the latest upgrades to one of Brevard County’s most popular destinations.

The newly completed amenities are part of Port Canaveral’s ongoing multi-million-dollar renovation of Jetty Park, which welcomes approximately 400,000 visitors annually.

The new beachside pavilion includes a large covered gathering area with picnic-style seating, restrooms, and electrical hookups designed to accommodate up to three rotating local food trucks each day.

The addition is intended to enhance the visitor experience by providing more dining options and shaded areas for families and beachgoers.

Also unveiled was a modern playground featuring multiple slides, climbing structures, ADA-compliant elements, soft turf surfacing, and shade structures that allow children to play comfortably year-round.

Port officials said the new amenities represent another major milestone in the transformation of Jetty Park, a project that began last summer with the opening of a new camp store.

Additional improvements planned for the park include upgraded guest cabins, a new dog park, renovated bathhouses, enhanced roadways and lighting, and newly paved RV and camping sites. Future plans also call for renovations to the Rodney S. Ketcham Boat Ramp.
