BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – Residents and visitors gathered Sunday at Jetty Park to celebrate the grand opening of a new beachside pavilion and playground during a festive “Party in the Park” community event that coincided with Flag Day.

The celebration featured food, games, giveaways, and family-friendly activities as attendees explored the latest upgrades to one of Brevard County’s most popular destinations.

The newly completed amenities are part of Port Canaveral’s ongoing multi-million-dollar renovation of Jetty Park, which welcomes approximately 400,000 visitors annually.

The new beachside pavilion includes a large covered gathering area with picnic-style seating, restrooms, and electrical hookups designed to accommodate up to three rotating local food trucks each day.

The addition is intended to enhance the visitor experience by providing more dining options and shaded areas for families and beachgoers.

Also unveiled was a modern playground featuring multiple slides, climbing structures, ADA-compliant elements, soft turf surfacing, and shade structures that allow children to play comfortably year-round.

Port officials said the new amenities represent another major milestone in the transformation of Jetty Park, a project that began last summer with the opening of a new camp store.

Additional improvements planned for the park include upgraded guest cabins, a new dog park, renovated bathhouses, enhanced roadways and lighting, and newly paved RV and camping sites. Future plans also call for renovations to the Rodney S. Ketcham Boat Ramp.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The boyfriend of a Brevard County woman who was fatally attacked by dogs last month has been arrested on animal cruelty charges after investigators discovered three deceased dogs inside a travel trailer where the woman had been living.

According to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, 47-year-old Donnell Smith was taken into custody following an investigation that began when deputies and Brevard County Animal Services personnel responded to reports of a strong odor coming from the trailer.

Upon entering the residence, investigators located the decomposing remains of three dogs inside the trailer.

Authorities said the animals had been left confined inside the trailer without access to food, water, or air conditioning after the death of Smith’s longtime partner, Jodi Cowan.

The arrest comes amid the ongoing investigation surrounding Cowan’s death, which drew widespread attention after she was mauled by dogs in Brevard County last month.

Investigators determined the dogs ultimately died from a combination of extreme heat exposure, dehydration, and starvation.

Air Force Proposes New Launch Complex at Cape Canaveral to Support Military Missile Testing

BREVARD COUNTY • CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA — The U.S. Air Force is considering the construction of a new launch facility at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station aimed at expanding military testing capabilities and reducing conflicts with commercial space operations.

Plans for the proposed site, known as Space Launch Complex 51 (SLC-51), are currently under environmental review.

The Air Force has begun preparing an Environmental Assessment to evaluate potential impacts associated with the project, which would be located near Port Canaveral.

According to project documents, the new launch complex would provide a dedicated location for U.S. Army and Navy missile testing activities currently conducted at Space Launch Complex 46.

Military officials say the existing site’s proximity to commercial launch facilities has created operational limitations, making it difficult to conduct simultaneous missions.

The proposed relocation is intended to place military launch operations outside the safety exclusion zones established around nearby commercial launch providers.

Officials say the move would improve scheduling flexibility, increase launch availability, and support both national defense missions and the rapidly growing commercial space industry.

If approved, SLC-51 would be built on approximately 50 acres south of Pier Road, roughly 2.5 miles south of SLC-46.

The project would require the construction of new roads, utilities, launch support systems, and other infrastructure necessary to support missile testing operations.

The site is located near two former Navy launch facilities, Space Launch Complexes 25 and 29, both of which have been inactive for decades.

Launch Complex 25 was dismantled in the late 1970s and later repurposed for naval weapons testing activities, while Launch Complex 29 was deactivated in 1980.

In recent years, SLC-46 has served as a key site for joint Army-Navy hypersonic missile testing.

The facility has also supported commercial launches under agreements managed through Space Florida, including missions conducted by Astra Space.

Teen, 16, Accused in Cruise Ship Slaying of Stepsister Anna Kepner Ordered Into Federal Custody Pending Trial

A federal judge has revoked the release conditions of a Florida teenager accused of sexually assaulting and killing his 18-year-old stepsister aboard a family cruise, ordering that he be taken into custody while awaiting trial on murder charges.

Sixteen-year-old Timothy Hudson, identified in court records as T.H., is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse in the death of Titusville resident Anna Kepner, whose body was discovered aboard the Carnival Horizon cruise ship in November 2025.

According to newly unsealed federal court documents, Hudson was ordered to report to the federal courthouse in Tampa on June 15, where he would be placed in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

The court directed that he initially be transported to the Citrus County Jail and held in juvenile detention, then transferred to a juvenile facility in Miami-Dade County no later than July 10.

The latest ruling marks a significant shift in the case after months of legal arguments over whether Hudson should remain free while awaiting trial.

Body Found Hidden Beneath Cruise Ship Bed

Federal investigators allege Kepner was killed during a family cruise aboard the Carnival Horizon. Court documents state that her body was discovered concealed beneath a bed inside a cabin and covered with life jackets.

Authorities said Kepner died from asphyxiation after being sexually assaulted. The cause of death was determined by the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office.

The allegations led to Hudson being charged in federal court because the incident occurred aboard a vessel at sea.

Release Conditions Revoked

When Hudson was initially charged as a juvenile, a judge approved his release under strict supervision.

Following the transfer of the case to adult court and the filing of adult charges, federal prosecutors sought his detention pending trial.

In May, a judge allowed Hudson to remain with family members under several conditions, including electronic monitoring through an ankle bracelet.

The court also instructed the U.S. Marshals Service to explore housing arrangements closer to Hernando County, where Hudson’s family resides, rather than requiring him to remain in South Florida.

Prosecutors argued that the seriousness of the allegations warranted detention, while defense attorneys maintained that existing supervision measures were sufficient.

Judge Cites Public Safety Concerns

In a June 10 order that was unsealed June 15, the judge concluded that Hudson should be detained based on concerns about dangerousness rather than the risk that he would fail to appear for future court proceedings.

“The Court now finds that Defendant should be held going forward in the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending his trial in the case,” the judge wrote.

The court stated that the original release conditions were adequate to ensure Hudson’s appearance at trial but insufficient to address the danger posed by the charges.

The judge further noted that allegations involving the intentional killing and sexual assault of a close family member in the confined environment of a cruise ship represented a level of danger that could not be mitigated through curfews, electronic monitoring, or supervised housing arrangements.

Federal court records indicate he is expected to be transferred to a juvenile detention facility in Miami-Dade County before July 10, where he will remain pending further proceedings.

The event, scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., is expected to draw hundreds of family members, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters to Cocoa Beach for a day focused on inclusion, empowerment, and community.

During an exclusive interview with Friday Night Locker Room host Steve Wilson, Surfers for Autism Chief Executive Officer and founder Moose Brown discussed the organization’s mission, the impact of the upcoming festival, and how the nonprofit continues to change lives through surfing.

Brown said the Cocoa Beach Surf Festival remains one of the organization’s signature events, offering participants a unique opportunity to enjoy the ocean in a supportive, safe environment.

“Watching a child catch their first wave and seeing the confidence it builds is something special,” Brown explained during the interview.

“For many families, it’s an experience they never thought possible.”

More than 200 athletes with autism and other developmental challenges will have the opportunity to experience the thrill of riding the waves during the annual Surfers for Autism Cocoa Beach Surf Festival on June 20 at Alan Shepard Park.

Founded to provide individuals on the autism spectrum with access to surfing and beach activities, Surfers for Autism has grown into a nationally recognized nonprofit organization.

The group hosts surf camps and festivals throughout Florida and beyond, relying heavily on volunteers and professional surfers who donate their time to help participants enjoy the water.

The Cocoa Beach event will transform Alan Shepard Park into a celebration of acceptance and achievement.

Athletes will be paired with experienced surf instructors and volunteers who help guide them through the surfing experience, whether they are first-time participants or returning surfers.

Brown noted that the organization’s mission extends far beyond surfing.

“We use surfing as the vehicle, but the real goal is confidence, social interaction, and creating memories for families,” Brown said. “Many of these kids face challenges every day, and this gives them an opportunity to shine.”

Rain, Storms and Flooding Threat Increase Across Brevard County on Monday

Brevard County could see a busy day for scattered showers and thunderstorms on Monday as forecasters warn of a marginal risk for excessive rainfall and localized flooding.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County could see a busy day for scattered showers and thunderstorms on Monday as forecasters warn of a marginal risk for excessive rainfall and localized flooding.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, rain and storm chances will remain highest along the east coast, ranging from 60% to 70%, with Brevard County expected to see some of the most active weather during the afternoon and evening hours.

Forecasters say slow-moving thunderstorms will increase the risk of heavy rainfall, producing quick accumulations of 1 to 3 inches of rain, with isolated locations potentially receiving more than 4 inches.

As a result, portions of east-central Florida have been placed under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 4) for excessive rainfall.

The primary storm hazards Monday include:

Frequent lightning strikes
Heavy downpours
Localized flooding of roads and low-lying areas
Wind gusts up to 50 mph

Brevard County communities from Titusville to Melbourne are expected to experience some of the highest rain chances in the region, with storm coverage around 70%.

Despite the increased rain chances, temperatures will remain hot, with afternoon highs reaching the mid-90s across much of east-central Florida, including Melbourne, Daytona Beach and Vero Beach.

Motorists are urged to use caution during periods of heavy rainfall, especially on flood-prone roadways.

Residents should also monitor weather conditions throughout the day and seek shelter immediately if thunderstorms approach.

Space Coast Feline Network holds its second annual Spay & Neuter clinic at the “K9 Junny’s Animal Medical Center.”

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Sunday was a pretty cool day as the Space Coast Feline Network held their second Spay & Neuter clinic at our very own “K9 Junny’s Animal Medical Center!”

The surgical event focuses on community cats, as well as cat owners on a fixed income who are looking for affordable options to get their pets spayed or neutered, along with vaccinations, microchips, and other services.

Today, as a result of the partnership between their team of amazing volunteers and Veterinarians, they were able to provide surgery and other services for over 50 cats.

Space Coast Feline Network holds its second annual Spay & Neuter clinic at the “K9 Junny’s Animal Medical Center.”

Johnathan Critchfield, President of The Space Coast Feline Network, leads the way for this completely volunteer-run organization to help community cats in Brevard.

For this event, they bring their own Veterinarian, all of their own supplies, and work in our amazing facility, along with plenty of help from incredible volunteers, to make this day happen.

I want to thank Johnathan, the doctors, and all of the volunteers for making this clinic a success and for continuing to care for the homeless animals in our community.

Tyler Sirois is set to become the next Brevard County Commissioner representing District 2 after no challenger qualified to enter the race before the state’s candidate qualification deadline. BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Florida State Rep. Tyler Sirois is set to become the next Brevard County Commissioner representing District 2 after no challenger qualified to enter the race before the state’s candidate qualification deadline.

District 2 includes much of central Brevard County, including Merritt Island and surrounding communities.

As a county commissioner, Sirois will help oversee county budgets, infrastructure planning, public services, environmental programs, and economic development initiatives.

Sirois, a Merritt Island Republican and current Majority Leader in the Florida House of Representatives, will transition from state government to county leadership following the end of his legislative tenure.

His election became assured when no opponent successfully qualified for the ballot by the noon deadline on June 12.

Sirois has represented portions of Brevard County in the Florida House since first being elected in 2018.

During his time in Tallahassee, he has served in several leadership positions and currently holds the role of House Majority Leader.

He is prohibited from seeking another House term in 2026 because of Florida’s legislative term limits.

Tyler Sirois, a Merritt Island Republican and current Majority Leader in the Florida House of Representatives, will transition from state government to county leadership following the end of his legislative tenure.

In February 2025, Sirois announced his run for the county commission, describing the move as an opportunity to continue serving the community after his legislative career concludes.

Sirois highlighted several priorities he intends to focus on at the county level, including infrastructure improvements, water quality initiatives, and strengthening community programs.

Throughout his four terms in the Legislature, Sirois has advocated for tax relief measures and supported investments in transportation infrastructure, environmental restoration projects, and funding aimed at benefiting veterans and children.

He has also worked to secure state resources for projects affecting Brevard County and the Space Coast.

Sirois will assume office following the conclusion of his final term in the Florida House and the certification of the 2026 election results.

BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – The Titusville Police Department’s first Chief of Police, Archibald J. Mefford, was born on September 13, 1890, in Stephenville, Texas.

Mefford would have been 33 years old when he was elected for his first term in 1923 as Police Chief in Titusville.

Prior to being elected, Chief Mefford was also a Titusville Town Marshal and a Constable for Brevard County District No. 2.

Mefford served as Chief of the Titusville Police Department for 18 years, having been elected to the position by popular vote every two years from 1923 until 1933, and was again re-elected in 1941, then serving until July 1946.

Titusville’s population was approximately 1,500 in the early 1920s, and there were seven bars in the city. This was likely the primary factor driving the need for law enforcement during this time.

In 1929, the Chief’s salary was $125 per month, and if the Chief had Sundays off, that’s $4.81 per day. A full 12-hour day would yield him 40 cents per hour. That’s a 26-cent per hour increase over the Marshal’s salary.

The “Night Policeman,” a volunteer who kept watch for the Chief overnight, was not monetarily compensated. Chief Mefford used his own Model-T Ford for patrolling.

Mefford and his wife, Bessie, had five children: Novella, Archie “Jean”, Wilma, Cressie Irene, and Merle “Dean.”

The family first lived on what is now considered NASA property at Banana Creek on Merritt Island before moving to Titusville in 1918.

The only way to travel from Merritt Island to Titusville prior to 1922 was by boat, as the Walker Bridge linking the two cities had not yet been built.

The family lived in houses on Tropic, Palm, and Hopkins over the course of their time in Titusville.

In addition to his duties as police chief, a U.S. Federal Census shows Mefford was also a produce dealer in Titusville.

Chief Mefford passed away in 1967 in Cocoa, where he and his wife lived after moving from Titusville.

SpaceX is targeting Wednesday, June 17 for launch of AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird 8-10 mission to orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

BREVARD COUNTY • CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – SpaceX is targeting Wednesday, June 17 for launch of AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird 8-10 mission to orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

Liftoff is targeted for 2:39 a.m. ET with additional opportunities available 4:15 a.m. ET.

If needed, a backup launch opportunity is available on Thursday, June 18 during a launch window that opens at 2:19 a.m. ET.

This will be the 29th flight for the Falcon 9 first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched Crew-5, GPS III Space Vehicle 06, Inmarsat I6-F2, CRS-28, Intelsat G-37, NG-20, TD7, and 21 Starlink missions.

After stage separation, the first stage will land on the A Shortfall of Gravitas droneship, which will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.
