BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – The Brevard County Manatees dropped a 9-5 decision to the Palm Beach Cardinals on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium.

<img class="size-full wp-image-118641" alt="T.J.
Brevard County (25-21) started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. T.J. Mittelstaedt walked to lead off the frame against Cardinals’ starter Juan Bautista. With one out and Mittelstaedt on second, the newest Manatee, Mitch Haniger singled the left to put men on the corners. Haniger went 1-for-4 in his Brevard County debut.

Nick Ramirez then lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center field to plate Mittelstaedt and give the ‘Tees the early lead. Cameron Garfield then crushed an RBI triple to right-center field to double the lead.

PALM BEACH RESPONDS WITH THREE IN THE SECOND INNING

Palm Beach (18-28) responded with three runs in the top of the second inning on consecutive run scoring hits. After Matt Williams dribbled a ball into center field with two outs, Jesus Montero and Cesar Valera each hit RBI doubles. Nick Longmire then singled home Valera to give the Cardinals a 3-2.

<img class=" wp-image-118958 " alt="Manatees shortstop Yadiel Rivera flips the ball from the ground to second baseman Greg Hopkins to begin a double play turned in the first inning of Brevard County's 4-3 win over the St. Lucie Mets on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. (Image for SpaceCoastDaily.com)

The Cardinals’ lead would be short lived however as Brandon Macias led of the bottom half of the second with a double down the right field line. Yadiel Rivera then singled to left field to plate Macias and tie the game.

Rivera advanced to second on the throw home and was balked over to third. Mittelstaedt gave Brevard County the lead right back with a sacrifice fly to center.

The seesaw battle continued in the third inning with rain clouds looming in the area. After ‘Tees starter Jed Bradley walked the first two batters, Jonathan Rodriguez crushed a three-run homer to center field to give Palm Beach a 6-4 lead. Montero brought Willams home again with another two-out RBI hit that would end Bradley’s night.

The homestand will continue for the ‘Tees as the Clearwater Threshers (23-23) come to Space Coast Stadium for a three-game series. Drew Gagnon (3-4, 5.40) will get the start for Brevard in Friday’s opener, with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m.

Bradley (3-2, 5.45) lasted just 2.2 innings and surrendered a career-high eight runs on eight hits. Matt Miller relieved Bradley and hit two consecutive batters and then walked Colin Walsh with the bases loaded to extend the Cardinals lead to 8-4. The fourth ball to Walsh was the final pitch before a 66 minute rain delay.

66-MINUTE RAIN DELAY

After play resumed, the team’s traded runs. In the bottom of the seventh, Ramirez plated Mittelstaedt with an RBI single to right field, but that was as close as the Manatees would get.

Chad Pierce was the first man out of the bullpen after the lengthy rain delay. He pitched brilliantly as he allowed only one hit and struck out six in 4.1 innings.

BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA — Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey has introduced a new Crime Prevention Task Force – an initiative between Brevard law enforcement agencies, using the latest in technology to fight crime before it happens.

Preventing Crime Before It Happens

The all new iWatch Brevard County digital application will allow instant sharing of information from and to the public at large. (Image for SpaceCoastDaily.com)

During a press conference at the Sheriff’s West Precinct headquarters in Viera, Sheriff Ivey introduced new tools that will be employed to improve apprehension of criminals throughout Brevard County.

“In the past we have seen task forces established to catch criminals after crimes have been committed,” Ivey said.

“The goal of this task force is to keep crime from occurring and to prevent people from becoming a victim. When our resources are combined, our messages are combined. Law enforcement has always been territorial but, with this new multi-agency task force, we will now share vital information and protective measures with our agencies and the public to help prevent crime and victimization.”

Ivey’s Passion for Crime Prevention

Referring to the different law enforcement agencies within Brevard County, Ivey’s passion and vision for increased crime prevention was palpable.

Sheriff Wayne Ivey

“We don’t care whether the person who will save your life or will protect your family is wearing a green uniform, a blue uniform or a white uniform,” Ivey said.

“What we care about is that our citizens get the best and most coordinated crime prevention possible. I am very proud to be a part of this initiative with the chiefs and the state attorney’s office, where our resources will be combined to provide the best information to our citizens.”

Ivey outlined the task force’s development of a comprehensive system to reach every citizen in the county through one medium or another.

Brevard Sheriff TV

The new Brevard Sheriff TV will provide education on topics like identity theft, home invasion protection, swim safe programs and a way for many other public service announcements to be delivered to the citizens. All pubic service agencies will be able to use the media room to deliver their announcements and will be included in the delivery of information. Brevard Sheriff TV will also allow information to be delivered to all law enforcement personnel.

“Any new crime trends will also be explained and this will allow us to increase crime prevention, which will lower our crime rate,” said Ivey.

Facebook Tips Solving Crimes

“Facebook has become a vital tool for us and given us the ability to reach people not only in Brevard but across the country through the exponential sharing of information,” Ivey said.

“We recently captured a serial car burglar due to tips from Facebook.In-person law enforcement presentations will receive greater exposure as agencies will share information which will bring more awareness to things like personal safety, work-place violence, human trafficking and senior safety. We don’t care whether its a group of 5 or 500, we will show up and provide important presentations to the public about ways to improve crime prevention.”

Free App, iWatch, Prevents Crimes

The all new iWatch Brevard County digital application will allow instant sharing of information from and to the public at large. “This is a loaded tool which will allow the public to instantly share crime prevention information.” Ivey said. ”You can have the best message in the world but if you can’t deliver it to the front door of the citizens, it’s useless.”

State Attorney Phil Archer supports the Crime Prevention Task Force (Space Coast Daily image)

To that end, Ivey invited residents to download the free smart phone and computer application, iWatch Brevard County, that allows anyone to instantly send in anonymous tips, report suspicious behavior, view crime-related photos, receive crime alerts and follow community crime.

“Our goal is to get you that information instantly,” said Ivey.

Dan Elliot, the Dallas-based architect of iWatch, from the company ithinqware, explained the ways in which the iWatch system allows for the sharing of information.

iWatch is available for Android, iPhone, Blackberry and Windows phones. Tips will go to the respective agencies, giving patrol officers information about happenings in their city.

iWatch is available in 36 different languages and is free from the Google Play store or on iOs through iTunes.

State of the Art Community Policing

“It’s really community policing 2.0,” said Elliot. “You’re only two clicks from giving a tip. This is the forty-sixth iWatch system we have set up, but the first one in Florida, so thank you to Sheriff Wayne Ivey for seeing the potential for this to help Brevard.”

The iWatch Brevard system is a fully functioning, suite of tools, integrated to all social media and geofenced to send the tip to the right agency.”

“This tremendous new tool will allow our citizens to become more engaged in crime prevention, is very simple to use and is free” said Ivey.

All of the county’s municipal police chiefs echoed Sheriff Iveys words and commented on how much they all felt the task force will improve crime prevention.

State Attorney Phil Archer also lent his full support.

“Anytime we can get law enforcement agencies to work together and share information, it is a good idea, and I look forward to working with all the chiefs and the Sheriff,” said Archer.

Ivey recognized and thanked the local media for their support in crime prevention and crime solving and also recognized Cheryl Senk and other members of his team for assisting in the selection and development of the program.

At 3:43 a.m. Friday morning, officers responded to Eau Gallie Blvd and the Florida East Coast Railway crossing in reference to the crash.

According to Melbourne Police Department, a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis was traveling eastbound on Eau Gallie Blvd as the freight train was crossing at this location.

The Mercury crossed over into the oncoming westbound lanes, hit a small train crossing arm and then struck the side of the train. The vehicle came to rest on its passenger side, off to the side of the tracks.

PRONOUNCED DEAD AT HOSPITAL

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, Aaron Imes, was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. No one on the train was injured, nor did the train sustain any damage.

• Back-To-Back State Championships

• 268-85-2 Career Record

ALWAYS WELL PREPARED

Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame inductee Gerald Odom lives a quiet life in retirement on a small lake in Douglas, Ga.

His slow, controlled pace life is polar opposite to his life as the head football coach of the back-to-back Class 4A Florida State Championship Merritt Island Mustang teams of 1978 and 1979.

COACH GERALD ODOM: “It is one of the greatest honors of my life and one of the greatest honors I will ever receive. It is very unexpected and I can’t thank everyone associated with the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame enough for this distinct and humbling honor.” (SpaceCoastDaily.com image)

Odom, who was born on Feb. 5, 1941, starred at Apopka High and graduated from the school in 1959. He was a three-year letterman at the University of Florida in 1960, 1962 and 1963 for coach Ray Graves. Odom played on both the offensive and defensive lines.

“(Graves) taught us to be prepared and to know our opponent,’’ Odom said.“He said, ‘Don’t ever let them outwork you.’ ‘’

Coach Odom took that advice to heart, ensuring that his teams were always highly conditioned, disciplined and well prepared.

Odom was an assistant coach under Byrd Whigham at Melbourne High in 1966 when the Bulldogs defeated Fort Lauderdale 31-12 to win the Class 2A Championship Game. That was the biggest classification in those days.

In 1967, Odom joined Eddie Feely’s staff at Merritt Island, where, as Mustang defensive coordinator in 1972 he was instrumental in Merritt Island’s decisive 40-21 win over Tallahassee Leon in the Class 4A championship game.

DISCIPLINE, HARD WORK

When Feely moved to Florida State to become the Seminoles’ freshman coach under Bobby Bowden, Odom took the helm at MIHS, continuing the legacy of a consistently good football team and turned the Mustangs into a perennial state football power.

GERALD ODOM, kneeling center, with his coaching staff in 1979. His coaches included Travis Alin, Jim Casper, Gerald Hodgin, Joe Pribil and Lee Mace. (Images For SpaceCoastDaily.com)

State championship games weren’t held at neutral sites such as Orlando, Tampa or Gainesville in that era. In 1978, Merritt Island High had to travel to Pensacola Pine Forest for the Class 4A Championship Game.

“Rather than take buses, the (Merritt Island) Quarterback Club flew us up,’’ Odom said.

“That was one of the big things that helped us win that game. We were able to pretty much treat it like a regular game as far as preparation. Flying was a big deal for our players. It was a great experience.’’

Merritt Island defeated Pine Forest, 20-6. “We had a great staff and the kids believed they could do things they probably shouldn’t have been able to do,’’ Odom said. “We went out and performed well.’’

With several returning stars and Odom’s focus on discipline, exceptionally hard work and preparation, the Mustangs defeated Pine Forest 19-14 in the rematch hosted by Merritt Island to claim another state title in 1979.

The Mustangs came close one last time under Odom when they lost 40-14 in the 1989 Class 4A Championship game to a Fort Lauderdale Dillard squad guided by Otis Gray that had several future Division I collegiate players.

Odom compiled a record of 191-57-2 at Merritt Island before leaving the school after the 1994 season. He took a year off from coaching to work for American Football Coaches Association Online, a college recruiting service based in Florida.

ESTABLISHED WINNING TRADITION AT COCOA HIGH

In 1996, Odom became the head coach at New Smyrna Beach High School. In six seasons with the Barracudas from 1996 to 2001, he posted a record of 55-17.

When an old friend from his Merritt Island days, Cocoa High Athletic Director Chuck Goldfarb, had an opening to be the head coach of the Tiger football team, Odom returned to Brevard County.

In three seasons from 2002 to 2004, Odom’s teams were 22-11, and established a winning foundation at Cocoa, which later helped John Wilkinson, who played for Odom at Merritt Island High, take the Tigers to national prominence and state titles in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Odom, who finished his head-coaching career with a record of 268-85-2, was named one of Florida’s top all-time coaches when the Florida High School Athletic Association named its All-Century Team.
