WATCH REPLAY! Brevard Old Red Eye Rugby takes on the Detroit Tradesmen in the USA Club Rugby National Championships.

By Kat Roche, Club Rugby

After months of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears, 20 teams, including Brevard Old Red Eye, are in Chicago to play for the USA Club Rugby National Championship!

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS – There are five trophies on the line, one for each of the divisions, and by the close of Sunday, those trophies will be claimed by the best of the best.

First up, we have Brevard Old Red Eye taking on the Detroit Tradesmen. Brevard won the Gulf Coast Super Regional, the breeding ground for D3 National Champions.

And I say this because the last six D3 National Championship titles have gone to Gulf Coast teams. Four to the Austin Blacks, one to the Columbia Rhinos, and one to the Palm Beach Panthers.

If Brevard wishes to add their name to that list, it’s all or nothing for the next two matches. Brevard actually finished 5-2 in the regular season, chalking up two losses to the Palm Beach Panthers.

In the Florida final, however, Old Red Eye got its revenge, smashing the Panthers to qualify for their third Super Regional in a row.

In 2024, they lost in the final to the Austin Blacks, 18-14, who went on to take the National title. In 2025, they lost in the final to the Columbia Rhinos, 31-24, who went on to take the National title.

This year, they defeated the Austin Blacks in the semifinal 46-34 before taking on New Orleans in the final. New Orleans took a 24-0 lead into halftime, looking like it would be another disappointing finish for Brevard, but Old Red Eye was not about to go down without a fight.

It was slow going, but Brevard dotted down once, twice, and suddenly, with ten minutes left in the match, we had a game on our hands.

When Jean-Eric Van der Elst Portero (what a name!) scored in the 74th minute, the stands were riotous. Koby Deacon converted for Brevard to take the lead 26-24. The final five minutes were chaos as New Orleans desperately tried to take back the lead, but Brevard stood firm.

The final whistle went, and the Florida fans stormed the field. Brevard did it; they were heading to Chicago.

Old Red Eye knows the competition only gets tougher from here, but they’ve been through hell and come out the other side. Florida might just have another National Championship team on their hands.

Standing in the way of Brevard and this fairy tale ending are the men from Michigan, the Detroit Tradesmen.

While Brevard had their share of regular-season losses and close games, Detroit is the opposite. The Tradesmen have been near unstoppable this season, going undefeated in league play since they kicked off in August.

After winning the Midwest Championship over the Chicago Blaze back in November, they stacked their spring schedule with friendlies to better prepare for the playoffs.

It clearly paid off as they blanked the St. Louis Hornets in the Super Regional semifinal 66-0, advancing to the final.

It turns out they would once again face the Chicago Blaze after Blaze eked out a win over the Rocky Mountain Champions, the Denver Highlanders, 21-12.

In the all-Midwest final, Detroit scored early and scored often to storm out to a blazing lead over Chicago. With a halftime score of 31-12, the Tradesmen were only halfway through their scoring streak.

Both teams dotted down a few more times, but it was never out of Detroit’s control, final score 58-31.

If Detroit makes it to the final, it will be the first time since 2019 that a Midwest D3 team has made it to the National Championship match, following in the footsteps of the Grand Rapids Gazelles.

The last time the Northern Super Regional Champion reached the final was in 2023, when the Colorado Springs Grizzlies won their semi.

The last time a Midwest D3 team won outright was in 2011, with Metropolis claiming the National title over the Syracuse Chargers.

It would also be the Tradesmen’s first time in a D3 National Championship match, and their first visit to any National Championship match since 2018, when the D2 team finished as runners-up.

AUSTIN, TEXAS – The Brevard Old Red Eye Rugby Club continues its dominant 2026 campaign, capturing the Gulf Coast Super Regional D3 Championship in Austin with back-to-back statement victories.

The Red Eyes captured the Gulf Coast Super Regional D3 Championship in Austin, Texas, with back-to-back statement victories. “This latest achievement marks a defining moment in the club’s resurgence—proving that their recent state dominance is no fluke, but part of a sustained climb toward national contention,” said Newman.

On Saturday, the Red Eyes, led by two tries from winger Dewayne Parks and New Zealand-born flyhalf, Koby Deacon, delivered a powerful performance against the hometown Austin Blacks, earning a decisive 46–34 victory in a high-scoring battle that showcased their depth, pace, and attacking precision.

This avenged a four-point loss to the Blacks in the GCSR Final two years ago.

The Blacks went on to easily win the National Championship that year.

They followed it up on Sunday with an incredible second-half performance, spurred on by Man of the Match and team captain, Brock Roper, coming back from a 24-0 halftime deficit to defeat a strong New Orleans side 26-24 to secure the Super Regional title and punch their ticket for the national playoff picture.

Last year, the Red Eyes lost the GCSR Final in 2OT to the eventual National Champion, Columbia, SC, and the Red Eyes look to continue the trend of the last nine D3 National Champions coming out of the GCSR.

Founded on a culture that blends physical, hard-nosed rugby with a strong sense of camaraderie, the Red Eyes, who last year celebrated their 50-year anniversary, have built one of the most resilient and tight-knit programs in Division 3, consistently competing for the Florida Rugby Union D3 Championship.

With a strong Space Coast, national, and even international following, and a roster spanning generations of players and a history that includes championship runs and international touring, the club continues to embody both competitive excellence and community spirit.

Red Eyes team captain Brock Roper, who plays in honor of his father Steve Roper, a great player who passed away last year in a tragic boating accident in the Bahamas, hoists the championship trophy.
“This latest achievement marks a defining moment in the club’s resurgence—proving that their recent state dominance is no fluke, but part of a sustained climb toward national contention,” said Corkey Newman, former player, long-time club President, and assistant coach.

With confidence surging and momentum firmly on their side, the Red Eyes now set their sights on the next stage—carrying the pride of Florida and the Gulf Coast into the national spotlight as the #1 seed in Chicago.

The Red Eyes would like to thank their amazing sponsors, MedFast Urgent Care, CMR Constructors, Dog N Bone British Pub, Three Bridges Planning, Island Direct Primary Care, Roper Plumbing, EZ Pack n Ship, Pig & Whistle British Pub, Swist Family Real Estate LLC, G&B Wealth Management, and Cocoa Village Tattoo Gallery, who have made this accomplishment possible.

They would also like to thank their former players (Old Boys) and supporters who cheer them on wherever the match may be, and continue to support the club financially.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Eastern Florida State College men’s tennis team enjoyed its best finish in program history, placing third in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament at Collin College in Plano, Texas.

“It was a stellar week of tennis for Eastern Florida State College, and I am immensely proud of this group,” Eastern Florida State College men’s tennis coach Nick Rosatti said.

“It was a joy to watch our guys make a huge comeback to secure a podium position. We played extremely well in doubles, which proved to be the difference.”

The No. 2 doubles team of Johan Mottlau and Filip Sormaz brought home a national title, winning the championship with a straight sets win over Pratt’s Kenta Kawada and Thiofhi Tshivhase in straight sets to win the title and become the second doubles team in program history to win a national championship.

The first set was back and forth, with Mottlau and Sormaz getting the break, then being broken to make it 2-2. The Pratt duo took a 4-2 lead, but the Titans responded with another break to tie things 4-4.

It would be tied 6-6 with Mottlau and Sormaz picking up the gutsy win in a tight 8-6 tiebreaker, posting the 7-6 win in the first set.

They continued to play well, jumped out to a 4-0 lead, and locked up the title with a 6-2 win.

Mottlau and Sormaz came into the tournament as the No. 4 seed in No. 2 doubles and defeated the No. 5 seed before beating the No. 1 seed to make the final. Then, in the final, they defeated the No. 2 seed for the title.

“I am excited for Johan and Filip for winning the National Championship! I am so proud of them and know that they are outstanding young men, and I had the privilege of coaching them in the fall. So happy for both of them,” Eastern Florida State College Associate Vice President of Athletics Jeff Carr said.

Pablo Garcia was in the championship final at No. 3 singles as the No. 6 seed’s run ended with a runner-up finish as he fell to the No. 1 seed, Kenta Kawada from Pratt Community College.

Garcia got off to a fast start, but Kawada battled back to win the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6.

Garcia could not get back on track and fell 6-2 in the second set. The sophomore was the No. 6 seed and defeated both the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds to reach the finals.

The No. 1 doubles team of Fernando Martinez and Salva Mulet also finished in second place as they lost in the final, 6-3, 6-4 to Pratt’s Sam Dineen and Kenneth Rabinad Vila.

“Of our three finals matches, all three of them were against the overall champion, Pratt Community College, and we were able to win one of those,” Rosatti said.

The Titans did win a pair of consolation final matches on Thursday.

Mottlau came back from being down 5-4 to defeat Weatherford’s Andres Serrano 8-5 and claim the title. Mottlau finished the tournament 2-1, rebounding from a quarterfinals loss to win the consolation title.

Tomas Kurz Cardozo dominated on Thursday, winning the consolation final 8-1 against USC Sumter’s Andrew Griffith. Cardozo also went 2-1 in the tournament after losing in the quarterfinals.

The doubles team of Cordozo and Pablo Garcia lost in the consolation finals, 8-5.

A CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Some men follow their fathers into sport. Some women follow their moms. For Lisa Davidson, softball was a mother-daughter thing.

“My mom was an awesome third baseman with the Zephyrs adult team in Satellite Beach,” said Davidson.

“I was always around when they would play, and I always had my glove in hand.”

Born at Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center, Davidson was throwing softballs almost simultaneously as learning to walk.

By the time she was six years old, she was involved in girls’ traveling teams, progressing from Percy’s Junior Lassies to the Lassies and to the Mets, all Satellite Beach teams.

Because she lived in Indialantic, she switched to the local Sharks, much to the Mets’ consternation.

Her home address listed her as attending Melbourne High School, where she spent a year, but the family soon moved to Satellite Beach so Davidson could play ball with the superior Satellite High School softball team.

“The team was so much better,” she said.

“It was a huge thing for us to move, because we didn’t have much money, but my mom thought it would give me the edge I needed for a scholarship.”

Mom was right.

REMARKABLE TRANSITION TO FAST PITCH

After snagging the team championship for Satellite and enjoying an incredible and totally legit .809 batting average in her senior year, Davidson was recruited by the Lady Seminoles at Florida State University, an impressive accomplishment, particularly when considering that she had only played slow pitch in high school, while the Lady Seminoles were a fast pitch team, requiring intensive batting practice on Davidson’s part to come up to speed in zeroing in on those 80-miles-per-hour pitches.

Davidson was a fast learner. As a freshman, she stepped in and led the team with a .341 batting average.

The Lady Seminoles themselves were transitioning, as was Davidson, as they stepped into a new conference, the ACC, and claimed the first ACC title in any sport, thanks in large part to Davidson, which dominated the conference.

She led the ACC in triples and was ranked in the league’s top 10 in five other categories.

Her platinum exploits on the diamond earned her the ACC Tournament’s Most Valuable Player title in 1993. She was an all-tournament selection at the UNC Invitational.

Davidson was the second Lady Seminoles to be named an All-American. She finished her career with four consecutive ACC Championships and three World Series appearances.

In 2003, almost 10 years after she graduated, Davidson was honored again when the ACC organized a 50th-anniversary team for each sport, and she was selected as one of 24 Florida State softball players on the squad.

In 2005, she was inducted into the FSU Hall of Fame.

After college, Davidson played semi-professional ball in San Antonio, Texas, for five years.

With a master’s in English, she taught high school for 15 years in South Florida before joining her mom at the family business, Dogleg Sportswear in Orlando.

Daughter Taylor carries on the athletic tradition in her own sport, soccer. You can expect another Hall of Famer in the family.

“She’s a much better athlete than I ever was, and I expect will be highly recruited,” says the proud Davidson.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Dinner and a show for $25 is a sweet deal, but it’s even sweeter when Melbourne Municipal Band’s Rock & Roll Revue rocks the house for a good cause.

The eight-piece ensemble, complete with a male vocalist and a Doo-Wop trio, will perform at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 29, during a dinner show that benefits Martin Andersen Senior Center in Rockledge.

Founded in 1983, the Senior Center provides older area residents with essential resources and opportunities for social connections.

Now in its 61st season, the Melbourne Municipal Band provides free, high-quality concerts to the community and nurtures the next generation of musicians through youth education and performance initiatives.

Founded in 1965, the MMB is an integral part of the Space Coast cultural community, serving more than 21,000 attendees each year through concerts, dances, and other ensemble performances.

The band’s 80-plus members and auxiliary volunteers spend 30,000 hours each year on rehearsals and performances.

During the performance on May 29, attendees will enjoy a lasagna-and-salad dinner, followed by classic dance tunes from the revue.

“The audience can expect music from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s by several of their favorite artists for their dancing and listening pleasure,” said Rock & Roll Revue conductor Art Martin.

Joining the musicians and vocalist, Jeremy Lundquist will be the Swingtimers Vocal Trio of Connie Maltby, Diana Sageser, and Dave Hutson.

Maltby, who moved to St. Augustine last year, is back in town and thrilled to sing again. She sang with the Brevard Chorale, Space Coast Symphony Orchestra, and, of course, the Swingtimers Trio for many years.

You can catch her in The Sound of Music this summer at the Limelight Theatre in St. Augustine.

Sageser has been singing away with the Swingtimers for a decade.

“I come from a very musical family, one that used to sing harmonies together while we were setting and clearing the table after dinner,” she said.

Sageser has played percussion with both MMB and the Melbourne Community Orchestra and has also played and sung with the Harbor City Dance Band.

The multi-talented Sageser has also performed as a living history interpreter and a professional clown.

“My grandmother was involved in vaudeville, so I guess it’s in my blood,” she said.

Hutson, founder and director of the Swingtimers, has been singing close harmony since high school, when he was part of a folk music group.

When he joined MMB’s Swingtime Big Band as a sax player, Hutson formed the Swingtimers to sing swing music of that era.

The group has since expanded its repertoire to include songs reminiscent of Manhattan Transfer.

Hutson also sings in the Oh Golly Dixieland Band and the 321 Jazz Orchestra and plays sax for the New Horizons Band. He is the founder and director of the Adagio Sax Quartet.

Rock & Roll Revue conductor Art Martin attended the legendary Juilliard School of Music in New York City.

He taught in New Jersey public schools for more than 40 years and served as an adjunct instructor of music at Montclair State University.

Martin has been a member of the Melbourne Swingtime big band, Melbourne Municipal Band, and The Oh Golly Dixieland Band, and has played a variety of woodwind instruments in the pit orchestras at the Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse and the Henegar Center.

He also performed with the Space Coast Pops and Central Florida Winds. He is currently the band leader for Rock & Roll Revue and the Oh Golly Dixieland Band.

Tickets for dinner and the show are available at the Martin Andersen Senior Center, 1025 Florida Ave., Rockledge. For more information, call 321-631-7549.

WATCH LIVE!

BREVARD COUNTY • CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – The 34th SpaceX commercial resupply mission under contract with NASA is headed to the International Space Station with new scientific experiments after lifting off at 6:05 p.m. EDT Friday on a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

The SpaceX spacecraft, loaded with nearly 6,500 pounds of cargo for the space station’s Expedition 74 crew, is scheduled to autonomously dock at about 7 a.m. Sunday, May 17, to the forward port of the station’s Harmony module.

In addition to cargo for the crew aboard the space station, Dragon will deliver several new experiments, including a project to determine how well Earth-based simulators mimic microgravity conditions, a bone scaffold made from wood that could produce new treatments for fragile bone conditions like osteoporosis, and equipment to help researchers evaluate how red blood cells and the spleen change in space.

The Dragon spacecraft also will carry a new instrument to study charged particles around Earth that can impact power grids and satellites, an investigation that could provide a fundamental understanding of how planets form, and an instrument designed to take highly accurate measurements of sunlight reflected by Earth and the Moon.

These experiments are just a sample of the hundreds of investigations conducted aboard the orbiting laboratory in the areas of biology and biotechnology, physical sciences, and Earth and space science. For more than 25 years, people have lived and worked continuously aboard the International Space Station, advancing scientific knowledge and making research breakthroughs that aren’t possible on Earth.

The space station helps NASA understand and overcome the challenges of human spaceflight, expand commercial opportunities in low Earth orbit, and build on the foundation for long-duration missions to the Moon, as part of the Artemis program, and to Mars.

The Dragon spacecraft is scheduled to remain at the station until mid-June, when it will depart and return to Earth with time-sensitive research and cargo, ahead of splashing down off the coast of California.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – U.S. Rep. Mike Haridopolos joined Space Coast Daily’s Zach Clark for a wide-ranging interview covering some of the biggest issues impacting the Space Coast and the nation, including America’s return to deep space, global diplomacy, and the loss of a longtime Florida political leader.

Haridopolos reflected on his recent meeting with the Artemis II astronauts, calling it an inspiring moment as NASA prepares to send humans around the moon for the first time in more than 50 years.

He also shared an early preview of Artemis III, the historic mission expected to return astronauts to the lunar surface, highlighting the Space Coast’s central role in America’s next era of exploration.

The congressman also weighed in on President Donald Trump’s summit meeting with China, discussing its broader economic and geopolitical implications as tensions between the two global powers remain a major focus in Washington.
