OBITUARY: Longtime Brevard Congressman Bill Posey, 78, Passes Away May 9 Surrounded by Family

Posey retired from Congress in 2025, concluding a public service career that spanned nearly five decades

Posey’s passing was announced Sunday by his successor in Congress, Mike Haridopolos, who praised Posey’s lifelong commitment to public service:

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of former United States Congressman Bill Posey, who passed away yesterday, surrounded by the love of his family.

Bill dedicated his life to serving the people of Florida and our nation with integrity, humility, and an unwavering commitment to public service. His passing marks the end of a remarkable career that spanned decades of leadership at the local, state, and federal levels.

He approached public office not as a path to personal recognition, but as a solemn responsibility to serve others honorably, faithfully, and effectively.

His legacy will endure through the countless lives he touched, the communities he strengthened, and the values he championed throughout his years of service.

Those who knew Bill personally understood that beyond the titles and accomplishments was a kind, grounded, and deeply loyal man who loved his family above all else.

Born and raised in Brevard County, Bill Posey built a political career rooted in his deep ties to the Space Coast community

Posey’s entry into public service began in the 1970s when he was elected to the Rockledge City Council.

What started as Brevard civic involvement grew into a decades-long career marked by steady leadership, conservative values, and a reputation for accessibility to constituents.

After his service on the Rockledge City Council, Posey was elected to the Florida House of Representatives and later to the Florida Senate, where he became known as an advocate for fiscal restraint, government accountability, and policies that support working families and economic growth.

In 2008, Posey was elected to the United States House of Representatives, representing Florida’s Space Coast and surrounding communities beginning in 2009.

Over the next 16 years, he became a familiar figure throughout Brevard County and across Central Florida, earning recognition as a strong supporter of America’s space exploration efforts and the aerospace industries that are closely tied to the region’s identity and economy.

Throughout his congressional career, Posey frequently advocated for NASA, the nation’s space workforce, and continued investment in launch operations and technology development along the Space Coast.

He also focused heavily on issues involving government transparency, veterans affairs, economic policy, and disaster preparedness for Florida communities vulnerable to hurricanes and coastal impacts.

Posey retired from Congress in January 2025, concluding a public service career that spanned nearly five decades.

In a statement announcing his death, Haridopolos described Posey as a principled leader who viewed public office as “a solemn responsibility to serve others honorably, faithfully, and effectively.”

“His legacy will endure through the countless lives he touched, the communities he strengthened, and the values he championed throughout his years of service,” said Haridopolos.

Friends, colleagues, and former staff members often described Posey as humble, grounded, and deeply devoted to his family.

Despite his years in public office and national political prominence, he maintained strong ties to the community where he began his career and remained a recognizable presence at Space Coast events throughout Brevard County long after arriving in Washington.

Posey is survived by his wife and childhood sweetheart, Katie, and their daughters, Cathi and Pamela, along with extended family, friends, and former colleagues.

As news of his death spread across Florida’s Space Coast, tributes poured in remembering a man whose political career was defined by consistency, conservatism, and an enduring belief in public service.

For many residents of Brevard County, Bill Posey’s legacy will remain intertwined with the growth of the Space Coast itself — from local city government chambers in Rockledge to the halls of Congress, where he spent years advocating for the community he proudly called home.

Mother’s Day WAS created in 1908

HISTORY.com – Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms worldwide.

More phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than on any other day of the year. These holiday chats with Mom often cause phone traffic to spike by as much as 37 percent.

Anna Jarvis created the American incarnation of Mother’s Day in 1908, and it became an official U.S. holiday in 1914.

Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s commercialization and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar.

While dates and celebrations vary, Mother’s Day most commonly falls on the second Sunday in May and traditionally involves presenting mothers with flowers, cards, and other gifts.

Eastern Florida State College Men’s Tennis Travels to Texas to Compete for National Title

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Eastern Florida State College men’s tennis team will be heading to the NJCAA Division I National Championship for the eighth straight season.

The Titans are ranked third in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association NJCAA Division I National Poll and will compete for a national title beginning Monday, May 11 in Plano, Texas.

Eastern Florida State College finished sixth last season and has finished in the top six in three straight seasons.

This year’s squad has four players back from that team and believe they have the experience and the talent to make a deep run this season.

Fernando Martinez Belinchon will play in his first national tournament but finished in third place at the ITA Cup in the fall. He will play at No. 1 singles in the national tournament and is ranked No. 2 in the latest national rankings.

Salva Mulet is ranked 11th in the nation in singles and will play No. 2 singles in the national tournament and will team with Martinez in No. 1 doubles.

The national tournament is set up with singles matches in the morning session and then doubles in the afternoon.

Martinez knows it will be a challenging week but is excited for the challenge.

Johan Mottlau is ranked 20th and will make his national tournament debut at No. 3 singles while Ignacio Sendra makes his tournament debut at No. 6 singles.

Pablo Garcia made the quarterfinals last season and had a solid spring season and will be at No. 4 singles while Tomas Kurz Cardozo lost in the semifinals last season. He will be playing No. 5 singles again this season.

Garcia And Kurz will team up in No. 3 doubles once again after making the consolation semifinal last season.

Filip Sormaz will team with Mottlau at No. 2 doubles for this national tournament. Sormaz teamed with Mulet last season and they reached the quarterfinals.

“We are very tight, we are a good group and train hard every day,” Martinez said. “This year I think we can do well with this team. We are talented and we are all close so hopefully that leads us to good results.”

The tournament begins Monday with the first rounds and the finals are set for Friday, May 15.

Former NASA Astronaut Winston Scott Inspires Florida Tech Class of 2026 at Spring Commencement

Scott, who logged nearly 25 days in space during two NASA shuttle missions and completed nearly 20 hours of spacewalks, delivered commencement remarks to students from Florida Tech’s various colleges as approximately 2,000 degrees were expected to be awarded.

Florida Tech President John Nicklow welcomed Scott, praising his legacy of excellence, innovation and leadership.

“Winston is inspiring and embodies the values of Florida Tech: focused on excellence, leads with integrity and community responsibility, applauds innovation, and supports the next generation of learners,” Nicklow said.

The university’s commencement schedule included ceremonies for College of Engineering and Science undergraduates, Bisk College of Business students and graduate students, and graduates from the College of Aeronautics and the College of Psychology and Liberal Arts.

Born in Miami, Scott began his distinguished military career in the U.S. Navy in 1972 and became a naval aviator in 1974. Over his career, he accumulated more than 7,000 flight hours in 25 military and civilian aircraft, including the F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18 Hornet.

Selected by NASA in 1992, Scott flew on STS-72 in 1996 and STS-87 in 1997, contributing to critical satellite retrieval missions and International Space Station assembly preparation. His missions included three spacewalks totaling nearly 20 hours.

Following his retirement from NASA and the Navy in 1999, Scott transitioned into higher education and leadership roles, including serving as dean of Florida Tech’s College of Aeronautics and later senior vice president for external relations and economic development.

Scott, who formally retired in 2021 as a Florida Tech professor emeritus, also built an accomplished life beyond aerospace as a martial artist with a second-degree black belt in Shotokan karate and as an accomplished trumpet player.

His appearance at commencement served as a powerful reminder to graduates of the possibilities that come with discipline, service and innovation as they begin their own journeys.

NASA, Office of Personnel Management Launches NASA Force to Recruit Engineers and Technologists

NASA Force is part of a US Tech Force initiative established by OPM to recruit elite technical professionals

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – NASA and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management launched the NASA Force website, opening applications for roles aimed at recruiting the nation’s top engineers and technologists to support America’s air and space program.

“NASA Force is bringing highly skilled early- to mid-career engineers, technologists, and innovators to help us achieve our world-changing missions,” said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman.

“Our successful Artemis II mission has inspired the world and generated tremendous interest in joining our workforce to be part of the Golden Age of innovation and exploration.”

NASA Force is part of a broader US Tech Force initiative established by OPM to recruit elite technical professionals for federal service across multiple agencies to modernize systems, accelerate innovation, and strengthen mission delivery.

“NASA has always shown the world what American talent can achieve when it’s pointed at a bold mission,” said OPM Director Scott Kupor.

“NASA Force is about making sure the agency has access to the next generation of innovation and strong partnerships with private sector talent to drive its very ambitious agenda.”

The first job application under NASA Force is for aerospace engineer positions for a two-year term, with the potential for additional term extensions. Additional openings are expected in the coming weeks and months.
