WATCH: Jeff Gardner and his mom tragically lost his life on 9/11 while working on the 99th floor of the North Tower at the World Trade Center in New York City. His siblings, Amy Kassan and Eric Gardner, talk with Steve Wilson about their brother.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Twenty-five years ago today, 2,977 people perished during 9/11. Living in Florida at the time, I watched 9/11 unfold from a distance. I had friends in New York that day, but I didn’t know anyone personally who was lost.

The last of my 25-part series on those who died honors the name and memory of Jeffrey Brian Gardner, or as his family called him, Jeff. I recently had the privilege of talking with Jeff’s siblings, Amy Kassan and Eric Gardner.

Jeff sold insurance for a living and worked on the 99^th floor of the North Tower at the World Trade Center, but that does not even begin to tell you anything about him. He was a free spirit, but focused when it mattered.

Jeff was passionate about volunteering his time with Habitat for Humanity International and Habitat for Humanity in Newark, New Jersey.

After Jeff’s passing, his family and friends gathered to work on and build houses with Habitat for Humanity. Over 15 houses have been built, all in Jeff’s name.

I asked Amy to describe Jeff. She told me, “He was a renaissance man. He could do anything. He loved the opera, but he rode a motorcycle. He loved to cook, but he loved his junk food!” She went on to say, “He was also the type of person who would do anything for anyone. He was a very deep-thinking, spiritual person.”

Jeff was a confident person. Eric told me, “He never met a challenge that he didn’t think he could overcome. He liked to work with his hands and was self-taught.” Eric gave me an example of this, telling me that, while living in San Francisco, California, Jeff figured out a way to “earthquake-proof” his house.

It has been 25 years since Jeff died, but he is always on the mind of his loved ones. Amy told me she thinks about him every day.

Constant things remind her of Jeff. Amy said, “All the time I see little signs. My favorite thing is when I have a JBG license plate in front of me, and I think, oh, he’s here.” She continued, “Cardinals, for some reason, remind me of him.”

Because Jeff had a tattoo of the sun on his ankle, she said, “Obviously, anything with the sun, I always think of him. So many things spark memories of him; he’s always present. He’s everywhere to me, still.

Eric echoed Amy’s sentiments about the sun. He said everything sun-related reminds him of Jeff. Eric also said he thinks of Jeff, “every time I see the name Jimmy Buffet.”

Jeff once took Eric to Margaritaville in San Francisco, just to pick at him, because he knew Eric was not a Buffet fan like he was.

I asked both Amy and Eric how they would like their brother to be remembered. Amy said, “I would like Jeff to be remembered as just the giving person that he was, the well-rounded person that he was.”

Eric, like Amy, wants people to know that Jeff was very giving. Eric told me, “He drew people in. He was willing to take on any challenge. He had supreme confidence.”

I did not have the good fortune to know Jeff, but after my conversation with Amy and Eric, I felt like I knew him. If we had more people like Jeff in this world, we would be much better off. Jeffrey Brian Gardner was that special.

BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – The Brevard Veterans Memorial Center will commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, and honor the lives forever changed by that day.

The 2026 Brevard County 9/11 Memorial Tribute will start at 6 p.m. and will recognize the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, civilians, and military members who lost their lives on 9/11, as well as those who later suffered from 9/11-related illnesses.

The Veterans Memorial Park is located at 400 S. Sykes Creek Pkwy., Merritt Island

“We invite all citizens of Brevard County to stand with us for this special uniform ceremony as we remember the lives lost, honor those who answered the call, and ensure their stories are never forgotten. We will never forget,” said a Veterans Memorial Park spokesperson.

Since 1978, the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center and Council have taken on many missions to support over 70,000 Brevard Veterans and their families, as well as to help all citizens and visitors learn firsthand about what U.S. veterans have contributed to make our country great.

ABOVE VIDEO: On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.

Often referred to as 9/11, the attacks resulted in extensive death and destruction, triggering major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism and defining the presidency of George W. Bush. Over 3,000 people were killed during the attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., including more than 400 police officers and firefighters.

Less than two weeks after an Executive Order was signed to create the first United States Space Academy, NASA-led work is in full swing to make the academy a reality and shape the future of America’s aerospace workforce and leadership.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman chaired the first Presidential Commission on the United States Space Academy meeting on Sept. 9. Following that meeting, NASA published a Request for Information Thursday seeking input from governors or their designees interested in hosting and sponsoring the up-and-coming academy in their state.

“Our first Commission meeting made clear how much talent and commitment we have behind President Trump’s vision for the U.S. Space Academy,” said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman.

“I’m grateful to our partners across government for getting right to work. Now, with the RFI underway, states across the country have an opportunity to help us shape a legacy institution built for America’s future in space.”

Isaacman and Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson welcomed key commission members from multiple agencies and organizations to NASA Headquarters in Washington for a collaborative commission discussion.

Participants included U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Director of the National Economic Council Kevin Hassett, Secretary of the United States Air Force Troy Meink, and U.S. Chief Technology Officer Ethan Klein, representing Director of Office and Technology Policy Michael Kratsios, along with representatives from the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, the National Security Council, and the White House.

During the meeting, commission members began working through the structure and priorities of the proposed U.S. Space Academy, including its governance, curriculum, service commitments, partnerships, and implementation.

“The location of the U.S. Space Academy is foundational to its success,” said Anderson.

“We’re asking states to bring their strongest vision — the infrastructure, the partnerships, and the community that can compete with the elite options this caliber of student will have and match the boundless ambition of our future space leaders.”

The commission’s 120-day mandate to develop recommendations for President Trump on how to establish the academy and build the technical talent and leadership pipeline needed to support America’s long-term goals in space began when the President signed the Executive Order on Aug. 28.

Responses to the RFI will help inform the commission’s path forward to selecting a location for the institution and are due by 6 p.m. EDT on Monday, Oct. 26. An ambitious timeline is outlined in the request, calling for a groundbreaking no later than 2027, temporarily hosting the first 300 students in 2028, and a permanent location in operation by 2031.

Each state may submit one response to the Announcement through its governor’s designee. In addition to details about resources available to support the academy, input sought on the potential campus includes:

• Location information

• Site readiness

• Environmental and regulatory considerations

• Proximity and supporting ecosystems

SEPTEMBER 11, 2001: At 8:45 a.m. on a clear Tuesday morning, an American Airlines Boeing 767 loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashes into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.

The impact left a gaping, burning hole near the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper, instantly killing hundreds of people and trapping hundreds more in higher floors.

As the evacuation of the tower and its twin got underway, television cameras broadcasted live images of what initially appeared to be a freak accident.

Then, 18 minutes after the first plane hit, a second Boeing 767–United Airlines Flight 175–appeared out of the sky, turned sharply toward the World Trade Center, and sliced into the south tower at about the 60th floor. The collision caused a massive explosion that showered burning debris over surrounding buildings and the streets below.

America was under attack.

BREVARD COUNTY • PATRICK SPACE FORCE BASE, FLORIDA – For U.S. Space Force 1st Lt. Sara Scrapchansky, serving as a range operations commander and representing the Department of the Air Force on the rugby field may seem like two very different roles.

But for Scrapchansky, both demand the same qualities: teamwork, quick decision-making, and the ability to perform under pressure.

As a ROC for the 1st Range Operations Squadron, Scrapchansky is placed among the key decision-makers responsible for ensuring the safety and success of space launches.

Before a launch can proceed, range personnel must ensure several conditions are met. Weather must be acceptable, surveillance areas must be clear, airspace and sea space must be safe, and tracking systems must function properly to monitor the rocket and ensure it stays on its intended trajectory.

“We take all of those components and let the launch provider know that they are good to launch commercial and government assets into space,” Scrapchansky said.

Away from the range, Scrapchansky found herself taking on a different kind of mission.

She earned her spot as one of just 15 players selected for the 2026 Department of the Air Force Women’s Rugby team.

A former soccer player, Scrapchansky discovered rugby during her freshman year of college after an upperclassman suggested she give the sport a try.

“I didn’t even know people played rugby in the U.S.,” she recalled.

What began as an unexpected introduction to a new sport eventually developed into a collegiate rugby career that included multiple trips to national championships.

Her selection to the DAF women’s rugby team is among her most recent achievements.

“I think my biggest accomplishment is making the Air Force team,” Scrapchansky said. “I feel like I never realized it, but that was the culmination of events in my rugby career.”

The team brought together women from across the Department of the Air Force and from a variety of career fields, ranks and stations. The roster included active-duty, Guard and Reserve members, with players traveling from across the continental United States and overseas locations including Mildenhall and Korea.

For Scrapchansky, one of the most notable aspects of the experience was the opportunity to meet people she otherwise might never have encountered.

“You get to meet everyone from every career field, every rank that still wants to play rugby,” she said. “You share that in common.”

Across the 15 players, only two came from the Space Force. Scrapchansky and 2nd Lt. Trinity Bohaty, who is stationed at Vandenberg, California. Coincidentally, they both work on launch-related missions, giving the Guardians another connection beyond their shared love of rugby.

The team came together for a two-week training camp before competing in the Armed Forces Women’s Rugby Championship. In sevens, teams compete with seven players on the field, creating a fast-paced game that requires players to make decisions quickly and capitalize on opportunities.

The team ultimately placed third, defeating the Coast Guard team 36-0 and the Marine Corps 22-0, then tying Navy 12-12. A close 21-19 loss to the Army team sent the team into a consolation match against the Marines, where the Air Force team prevailed 12-10.

For Scrapchansky, the experience was about more than the final standings.

Playing alongside service members from different backgrounds reinforced lessons she had already learned through military service.

“The range as a whole is essentially one big team,” she said. “They all have parts to play, and they all have different roles to fulfill to function like a team sport.”

The consequences, of course, are different. On the rugby field, a poor decision might cost a team a game. On the range, decisions can have much more serious implications because ensuring public safety is a no-fail mission.

The similarities between the two worlds extend beyond decision-making. Both require individuals to trust their teammates and execute their responsibilities for the good of the larger team.

That perspective has also shaped how Scrapchansky views her military service.

She met service members with vastly different stories, career paths and levels of experience during her time on the team.

“I think that all around my time on the field has made me realize how amazing the military is and just how it offers such a wide variety of opportunities for people,” she said.

For Scrapchansky, representing the Department of the Air Force was especially meaningful because military service had been a goal long before she commissioned.

“I knew that I always wanted to serve in the military,” said Scrapchansky. “I kind of had an inkling that this is what I was going to do when I grew up.”

With her father serving in the Navy, she grew up wanting to follow in his footsteps. She ultimately entered the United States Air Force Academy in 2020, just months after the establishment of the U.S. Space Force and commissioned as a Guardian in 2024.

At the time, she was studying systems engineering and became increasingly interested in space through school projects and research.

“I started doing more projects and doing more research into rockets and all this other space stuff,” she said. “And then I realized that that’s what I was interested in, and I wanted to pursue it as a career.”

Her path eventually brought her to the Eastern Range, where she now helps enable launches into space.

For Scrapchansky, the opportunity to incorporate her favorite sport into her career is something she does not take for granted.

“For my career to finally culminate in getting to play a sport that I love, while doing a job that I love, for a mission that I’ve always wanted and then ultimately to just be able to serve in the U.S. military, I think is amazing.”

Her advice to other service members considering trying out for a Department of the Air Force sports team is simple.

“If you’re considering joining a team as a service member, 100% do it,” she said.

Even if an athlete does not make the team, Scrapchansky said, there is still something to gain.

“You have absolutely nothing to lose by throwing your name in the hat,” she said. “Worst case, you get a ‘no, try again next year’, and it gives you something to work towards. And best case, you make the team and meet some incredible people and build some community.”

For Scrapchansky, that community is ultimately what makes the experience so valuable. Rugby gave her an opportunity to compete at a high level, but it also connected her with fellow service members from across the Department of War.

Whether she is on the field or the range, the mission remains rooted in the same principle.

Every individual has a role to play, but success depends on the strength of the team.
