BREVARD COUNTY • PATRICK SPACE FORCE BASE, FLORIDA – Space Launch Delta 45 Airmen and Guardians at Patrick Space Force Base played a key role in the rapid rescue of 11 Bahamian adults who survived the ditching of a Beechcraft King Air twin-engine turboprop aircraft in the Atlantic Ocean on May 12.

The operation showcased seamless collaboration among U.S. military services, federal agencies, and local partners. It highlighted how Space Force infrastructure and training for domestic emergencies save lives.

U.S. Space Force Col. Brian L. Chatman, commander of Space Launch Delta 45, praised the Delta’s contributions.

“This rescue demonstrates the vital role our space infrastructure plays in saving lives and the power of seamless integration across military and civilian partners,” Chatman said. “SLD 45 Airmen and Guardians stand ready every day to support not only national security launches but also real-world emergencies that protect American and international lives.”

An emergency locator transmitter aboard the aircraft activated after engine failure during a flight from Marsh Harbour, Bahamas, to Freeport.

The signal reached the international Cospas-Sarsat system, which relies on critical space-based assets. U.S. Space Force satellites, including those launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, helped relay the distress alert swiftly. Miami Air Route Traffic Control Center received the initial notification and alerted the U.S. Coast Guard.

The U.S. Coast Guard reached out to the SLD 45 Command Post for support. SLD 45’s Command Post, Public Affairs team, aircraft operations, and Patrick Space Force Base tower operators responded immediately.

They coordinated with the 920th Rescue Wing, whose crews were already airborne on a routine training mission east of the base.

The 920th Rescue Wing’s HC-130J Combat King II aircraft, commanded by U.S. Air Force Maj. Elizabeth Piowaty, diverted to the scene about 60 to 80 miles east of Cape Canaveral.

The crew located the survivors in a life raft within minutes, dropped rescue kits with additional rafts, water, and supplies, and provided real-time reconnaissance.

U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Matt Johnson’s HH-60W Jolly Green II helicopter crew, carrying pararescuemen led by U.S. Air Force Capt. Rory Whipple joined the effort.

Pararescuemen swam to the raft, assessed the 11 adults, all with minor injuries typical of a water ditching, and hoisted them aboard one by one.

The new Jolly Green II’s increased capacity proved vital for safely transporting the full group. The helicopter then flew the survivors to Melbourne Orlando International Airport, where the City of Melbourne Fire Department provided initial triage.

Brevard County Fire Rescue and Coastal Health Systems ambulances transported them to Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center and Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital. All were reported in stable condition.

Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center staff with Olympia Outten, who was treated at the Melbourne hospital after surviving a plane crash in the Atlantic Ocean.

The 920th Rescue Wing trains daily for these types of missions. Its crews transitioned quickly from a training flight to real-world rescue operations. The “Reserve Advantage” keeps the wing ready at a moment’s notice to conduct civil search and rescue alongside its combat missions.

Coast Guard officials praised the rapid response. A C-27 Spartan from Air Station Clearwater also supported the search.

Melbourne Orlando International Airport and the Brevard County Emergency Operations Center coordinated ground efforts, while the Department of Homeland Security and Melbourne Orlando Airport Authority police assisted the Bahamian nationals.

NOAA’s U.S. Mission Control Center for Cospas-Sarsat and other partners ensured complete accountability.

This mission underscores SLD 45’s long history at America’s busiest spaceport.

SLD 45 manages launches that deliver satellites enabling navigation, communication, and search-and-rescue capabilities worldwide. Recent successes include the GOES-R series, with GOES-16 launching Nov. 19, 2016, from Cape Canaveral, and the GPS III missions, such as those launched on Falcon Heavy in April 2026, which bolster positioning accuracy for rescue operations.

SLD 45 leaders emphasized that military personnel do more than prepare for armed conflict. They stand ready for domestic emergencies from aircraft accidents at sea to floods and tornadoes, working in unison with civic authorities.

This rescue, one of hundreds annually throughout the United States, demonstrates how the U.S. military and partners help Americans and international visitors in their time of need.

Interoperability proved decisive. Real-time coordination between SLD 45 assets, the 920th Rescue Wing, Coast Guard, local first responders, and space infrastructure turned a potential tragedy into a success. Survivors spent about five hours in the raft before rescue. Their will to survive, combined with lashed rafts and clear communication, aided the effort.

Officials at Patrick Space Force Base expressed pride in the joint team. The operation reflects the dedication of Airmen, Guardians, Coast Guardsmen, and civilians who marshal the nation’s search-and-rescue tools to bring people home safely.

Such stories affirm the value of investment in space capabilities and trained forces that protect lives every day.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – On Florida’s Space Coast, two homes can enter the market at nearly the same price point and experience completely different outcomes.

One generates immediate showings, strong activity, and multiple offers within days. The other sits quietly on the market for months with little traction despite being in a desirable location.

According to Bobby Freeman, the difference often has less to do with the home itself and more to do with how buyers interpret value, risk, and long-term ownership in today’s market.

“Most people assume a home that sits is simply overpriced,” Freeman said.

“In reality, buyers today are evaluating confidence. They’re asking themselves whether the property feels predictable, financially sound, and aligned with what they expect for the price.”

Freeman, who specializes in waterfront homes, coastal properties, and condos throughout Florida’s Space Coast through the McCoy Freeman Group at Compass, says buyer behavior has changed significantly over the past few years.

Rising insurance costs, financing scrutiny, HOA reserve concerns, and long-term maintenance expectations are all influencing how quickly homes generate interest.

“In today’s market, buyers are not just comparing square footage or finishes,” Freeman explained. “They are comparing certainty.”

That shift is especially noticeable in waterfront and condo communities throughout the Space Coast, where buyers often evaluate factors beyond aesthetics.

Canal width, seawall condition, roof age, HOA financial strength, insurance exposure, and future maintenance costs can all affect buyer confidence before a showing even occurs.

That is especially true with direct oceanfront condos, where buyers are increasingly evaluating not only views and amenities, but also long-term building stability and ownership costs.

Freeman says the first seven to fourteen days on the market are more important than ever.

“When a property launches with a clear pricing strategy, strong presentation, and answers to the questions buyers are already asking, it tends to generate momentum quickly,” Freeman said.

“Once a listing begins accumulating time on the market, buyers naturally start wondering what they might be missing.”

That hesitation can create a cycle that becomes difficult for sellers to reverse. Even high-quality homes may face increased negotiation pressure once buyers perceive uncertainty.

“We’re seeing buyers evaluate waterfront communities like Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, and Satellite Beach differently from areas like Merritt Island and Viera, where ownership costs, boating access, HOA structure, and lifestyle expectations can shape value perception in very different ways,” Freeman explained.

According to Freeman, one of the biggest mistakes sellers make is assuming that pricing alone determines whether a property will sell.

“In today’s coastal market, success is often determined more by positioning than pricing alone,” Freeman said.

“A well-positioned home reduces uncertainty for buyers. It gives them confidence to act.”

That positioning includes photography, presentation, marketing strategy, documentation clarity, and realistic expectations surrounding ownership costs. Freeman says homes that clearly communicate value tend to outperform homes that leave buyers guessing.

“In many cases, buyers will pay a premium for predictability,” Freeman added. “Especially in coastal markets.”

As the Space Coast real estate market continues evolving, Freeman believes sellers who understand buyer psychology and long-term ownership concerns will be in the strongest position moving forward.

“Today’s buyers are not simply shopping for a home,” Freeman said. “They’re evaluating lifestyle, risk, maintenance expectations, and long-term value all at the same time.”

]]> Cosmonauts will install a solar radiation experiment on the Zvezda service module

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Space Coast Daily, via NASA, will provide live coverage on Wednesday, May 27, beginning at 9:45 a.m. as two Roscosmos cosmonauts conduct a spacewalk outside the International Space Station.

The spacewalk is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:15 a.m. EDT and last roughly five hours.

International Space Station Expedition 74 commander Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and flight engineer Sergei Mikaev will install a solar radiation experiment on the Zvezda service module and remove other science hardware from the Poisk and Nauka modules of the orbiting complex’s Roscosmos segment.

If time allows, the duo will also photograph one of the Progress 94 cargo spacecraft’s Kurs rendezvous antennas, which failed to deploy in March after launch to the space station.

This Roscosmos spacewalk will be the second for Kud-Sverchkov and the first for Mikaev. Kud-Sverchkov will wear a spacesuit with red stripes, and Mikaev will wear a spacesuit with blue stripes.

It will be the 279th spacewalk in support of space station assembly, maintenance, and upgrades.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Viera High School’s Class of 2026 will celebrate graduation on Friday, May 22, at Viera High School Stadium, as seniors prepare to mark a major milestone surrounded by family, friends, and school staff.

The graduation ceremony will honor the hard work, achievements, and memories of the graduating class as students officially close out their high school journey and prepare for the next chapter of their lives.

Graduates are expected to walk across the stage before a packed crowd at Viera High School Stadium, with school leaders and faculty members recognizing the accomplishments of the Class of 2026 and offering words of encouragement for the future.

WASHINGTON, DC – Interim Surgeon General Dr. Stephanie Haridopolos and Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., jointly released an advisory on screen use among children.

“History will judge us, not only by the steps that we take today, but by the inaction that we allow,” said Haridopolos.

While delivering his remarks on the advisory, Kennedy said that, for the first time in American history, the Office of the Surgeon General is issuing an official advisory warning parents and the public about the dangers of excessive screen time and harmful digital media exposure for children:

While screen use can have some benefits, the evidence of a range of risks to children’s overall mental and physical health is mounting.

These negative outcomes are related to harmful use, including use by children with vulnerable medical conditions, along with the ubiquity of devices and features deliberately built into many tech platforms to promote “engagement,” a positive-sounding word that, for too many young people, is a path to addiction-like behavior.

Social media is only one aspect of this ongoing screen time problem. Behavior patterns involving gaming, online gambling, and other forms of virtual interaction are emerging.

While this report uses “screen time” as a widely understood shorthand, we want people to understand that we are referring to the entire digital ecosystem of apps, smartphones, tablets, chatbots, and other screen-associated devices and interfaces.

From the individual and family up to governmental policy, there is recognition that young children, tweens, teens, and families need help to curb the overuse of screens.

Drawing on a broad range of expertise, this Advisory outlines everyday actions that can be taken, as well as what schools and states are already doing to limit screen time during school hours.

Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and Interim Surgeon General Dr. Stephanie Haridopolos jointly released an advisory on screen use among children. Regarding the scientific data accumulated for this Advisory, Interim Surgeon General Haridopolos said, “History will judge us, not only by the steps we take today, but by the inaction we allow.”

For this Advisory, which focuses on children and adolescents aged 0-18 years, we engaged a wide range of experts, including psychologists, pediatricians, behavioral scientists, academic researchers, and health communicators.

We gratefully acknowledge the important contributions of each of these scientists, clinicians, reviewers, and leaders to this Advisory.

This report is evidence-based, forward-looking, and action-oriented. While we describe knowledge gaps where focused research is needed, it is a basic principle of public health, the precautionary principle, that action cannot wait until all evidence is available.

There are children, adolescents, families, schools, and communities who have found a different path and have built healthy relationships with—and without—technology.

They gather for game nights, read books, sing, and play sports. They volunteer in their communities and participate in faith groups. Along with their families, they spend time at playgrounds, libraries, and community centers. They build lasting friendships, which we now know contribute to longer and healthier lives.

We have sought to learn from them and want to keep doing so. We should all strive as a nation to expand access to these types of activities, whether financial or neighborhood-safety-related.

This Advisory is not only a warning, but also an invitation for all of us to enjoy a broader world, beyond the confines of screens.
