BREVARD COUNTY • ROCKLEDGE, FLORIDA – Spruce Creek will travel south to face Rockledge on Friday night in a matchup that will be broadcast live on Space Coast Daily’s Facebook and YouTube channels.

Coverage begins Friday, August 28, shortly before the 7 p.m. kickoff, with Friday Night Locker Room’s Orville Susong and Zane Garcia calling the action live from McLarty Stadium.

Spruce Creek enters the matchup with a 1-0 record following an impressive Week 1 victory, while Rockledge is 0-1 after suffering a hard-fought loss to crosstown rival Viera.

Although Rockledge did not pull off the win a week ago, they learned a lot about their team over the past two weeks, and now they will have a chance to get their season back on track against a good Spruce Creek squad.

With the number of offseason transfers, the Raiders had a lot of questions to answer, and they have started to figure them out little by little.

The Spruce Creek Hawks out of Port Orange got a massive win against Erie High School from Colorado last week.

Being able to defend home field when playing out of state teams can do a lot for a team’s morale.

The Hawks finished 10-3 a season ago, and had it not been for the eventual state champions (Lake Mary) Spruce Creek might have made a run to the final four.

Keys to Victory:

Rockledge

• Ball control & win the time of possession – Possessions in this game should be a luxury, if the Hawks offense has to stay on the side line and the Raiders can sustain drives that will go a long way.

• Force turnovers early – If Rockledge can find a way to get their offense extra possessions that will surely give them a better chance to win this ball game.

• Special teams success – The kicking and punting game needs to be above par, when it comes to pinning the Hawks deep and even making field goal attempts.

Spruce Creek

• Create big plays early – The Rockledge faithful is going to want to get involved in this game, but if the Hawks can create some big plays early that will quiet the crowd for the time being.

• Consecutive stops – The offense for the Raiders is going to have some wrinkles to it and you never know who is going to line up at QB, if they can slow down the guessing game they will have a good chance to win.

• Force Rockledge to throw the ball – The Raiders are going to want to run the ball in multiple different ways, if they slow that down making Rockledge one dimensional will go a long way.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Melbourne Police have arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with a 2025 hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of bicyclist James Griffin.

Jason Alexander Kerr, a Melbourne resident, was arrested Thursday, Aug. 27, following an extensive traffic homicide investigation.

Police said investigators developed probable cause to charge Kerr with vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of a crash involving death. He was turned over to the Brevard County Jail.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 5:33 a.m. on Oct. 29, 2025, near the intersection of Eau Gallie Boulevard and Highland Avenue.

According to investigators, Griffin was traveling west in the designated bicycle lane on Eau Gallie Boulevard when he was struck by a light-colored car.

Witnesses told police the vehicle had turned west onto Eau Gallie Boulevard from Pineapple Avenue and was traveling erratically, swerving and squealing its tires before striking Griffin.

The driver allegedly continued west without stopping.

Officers responding to the scene found Griffin suffering from significant injuries. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

Investigators canvassed the surrounding area and reviewed security footage provided by local businesses and residents. That footage helped police track a vehicle believed to have been involved in the crash to a property on St. Clair Street.

Police executed a search warrant at the property on Oct. 31, 2025, and seized the vehicle. Investigators said the car had visible damage consistent with a collision and was submitted for forensic processing.

Melbourne Police credited community members who provided surveillance footage and other assistance with helping investigators advance the case.

BREVARD COUNTY • ROCKLEDGE, FLORIDA — At Health First’s recent “A Heart-to-Heart with the Experts” event, community members had the opportunity to sit down with local heart specialists, ask questions and get answers directly from the experts.

The free, community event was held at Banyan Estates in Malabar, marking the first time Health First brought its Heart-to-Heart program to South Brevard.

The goal was simple: give residents an opportunity to talk directly with physicians, ask the questions they may not always get to ask during a doctor’s appointment, and learn more about taking care of their hearts.

The panel included Tamim Antaki, MD, cardiothoracic surgery; Kyeesha Beacoats, MD, cardiology; Aashish Gupta, MD, vascular surgery; Vishal Patel, MD, MSc, electrophysiology; and Norberto Schechtmann, MD, interventional cardiology.

Following the success of previous Heart-to-Heart events, Health First extended the program from one hour to 90 minutes to allow more time for conversation and audience questions.

The additional time was well spent, with more than 75 community members attending and actively engaging with the physicians.

Rather than simply listening to a presentation, attendees brought thoughtful questions covering a wide range of heart-health concerns.

They asked about the differences between heart medications and how doctors determine which medication is right for a patient. They wanted to know what follow-up care looks like after major open-heart surgery and how calcium scores can help assess cardiovascular risk.

Among the topics discussed were heart medications and how they differ, follow-up care after major open-heart surgery, the role of calcium scores in assessing heart health, and the connection between sleep apnea and cardiovascular health.

The physicians also discussed whether people should establish a relationship with a cardiologist before experiencing symptoms or wait until a heart-health concern arises.

The discussion also touched on access to care. When asked whether the physicians were accepting new patients, the answer was a resounding yes.

For Health First, the event was about more than sharing medical information. It was about making it easier for people to have conversations about their health outside of an exam room and know where to turn when they have questions or concerns.

The event also included a heart-healthy lunch and refreshments for attendees.

The next event is planned for February 2027 in recognition of Heart Month, with plans to hold two Heart-to-Heart events each year at different locations.

For residents, the takeaway from the afternoon was perhaps the simplest one: when it comes to your heart, there is no such thing as a bad question.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County residents can expect another hot and stormy day Friday, with scattered to numerous showers and lightning storms forecast to develop during the afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, a few storms could become strong, producing wind gusts of up to 55 mph, frequent lightning and locally heavy rainfall.

The strongest storms could drop between 1 and 3 inches of rain in just 30 to 60 minutes, potentially causing temporary flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas.

Rain chances are expected to diminish by around 10 p.m.

Temperatures will climb into the low 90s across Brevard County, with Melbourne forecast to reach approximately 91 degrees. Rain chances are estimated at 30 percent near Melbourne and 40 percent around Titusville.

Beachgoers should also remain cautious, as a moderate risk of dangerous rip currents is forecast along all Atlantic beaches in Brevard County and throughout the Space and Treasure coasts.

Surf heights are expected to range from 1 to 2 feet, but strong rip currents remain possible. Swimmers are urged to enter the water near a lifeguard and avoid swimming alone.

Anyone caught in a rip current should remain calm, avoid swimming directly against the current and swim parallel to the shoreline until escaping its pull. Beachgoers should remember: “If in doubt, don’t go out.”

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Well folks, “The Chronicles of Stupid” just seem to somehow keep expanding as more and more people find their way to “Ivey’s Iron Bar Lodge,” where they learn exactly what we mean when we say “if you play stupid games in Brevard County, you win stupid prizes!”

You know, people like Jason Holland who quickly learned that you can’t shoot a shotgun at someone and their vehicle and then just walk away like it never happened.

The victim in this case arrived at the suspect’s residence to pick up her friend, who also lived at the property.

Well, for some reason this seemed to annoy Holland, even though the victim stayed in her vehicle and never got out; for some reason Holland thought it was a good idea to grab his shotgun and point it at the victim’s car, and shoot it.

The loud bang startled the victim, as she heard something hit her vehicle, so she looked up and saw Holland standing there with the gun. Her friend then quickly exited the residence to see what happened, and Holland pointed the shotgun at him before retreating back to the residence.

Deputies and Agents responded to the scene and found the shotgun leaning against a workbench and a spent shotgun shell in the trash can.

When they asked Holland what happened, he said he was mad she was on his property and meant to fire it toward the ground to get her attention, but didn’t remember pointing it at her.

Well, luckily for him, whether he remembered it or not, the damage only occurred to her vehicle and not to her person, as this would have ended in an even worse situation.

On a bright note, after our team conducted the investigation, Holland was able to check in for his reservation at Ivey’s Iron Bar Lodge for a $26,000 stay for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Shooting a Missile into a Dwelling, and Criminal Mischief.

Of course, while at the lodge, Holland can enjoy a close-quarters stay with lots of his new friends, less-than-mediocre entertainment in the common areas of his jail pod, and of course, food that doesn’t make anyone’s Top 100 list unless it’s of course, the list of the last places on earth you would want to eat.

BREVARD COUNTY • MIMS, FLORIDA – A 40-year-old Mims man has been arrested following a fatal crash involving a motorcycle near US-1 and Orbiter Court, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers identified the suspect as Nickalas Ray Davis, who was taken into custody Aug. 25 in Putnam County.

According to FHP, Davis was driving a vehicle that struck a motorcycle from behind.

The crash killed the motorcyclist, a 61-year-old Melbourne man.

Davis faces charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving death, tampering with physical evidence, driving with a suspended license and careless driving.

The investigation remains ongoing.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Tropical Storm Dolly continues to move rapidly across the central Atlantic, with forecasters expecting the system or its remnants to approach the Leeward Islands this weekend.

As of 5 a.m. ET, the center of Dolly was moving west at approximately 24 mph, a general motion expected to continue during the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained winds remain near 40 mph with higher gusts. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles north of the storm’s center.

Forecasters expect little change in strength during the next couple of days.

However, Dolly is predicted to degenerate into a tropical wave before reaching the Leeward Islands.

There are currently no coastal watches or warnings in effect, but residents and visitors in the Leeward Islands should continue monitoring the storm’s progress.

Heavy rainfall associated with Dolly could begin affecting the Leeward Islands late Saturday and continue into Sunday.

Rainfall is then expected to spread into the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Hispaniola Sunday and Monday.

The National Hurricane Center warned that heavy rain could produce flash flooding, particularly across higher terrain in the Leeward Islands.

Residents in potentially affected areas should monitor future forecasts and be prepared for changing weather conditions as Dolly moves westward.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – In remembrance of the 25^th anniversary of 9/11, the Friday Night Locker Room’s Steve Wilson randomly selected 25 people that were killed on that tragic day. Space Coast Daily will release one story per day leading up to September 11, 2026. Today’s story is about Swarna Chalasani. When #15 Swarna Chalasani traveled — and she traveled a lot — it was never simply a vacation. It was an adventure. She rode white-water rapids in Colorado. She backpacked through Thailand. She taught herself Japanese and Spanish to prepare for her trips abroad. She read voluminously about her destinations weeks before she left.

Ms. Chalasani was a vice president at Fiduciary Trust and was last seen on the 94th floor of 2 World Trade Center on the day of the attack. She would have celebrated her 34th birthday today.
Her first name means “gold” in Hindi, though her family called her Minny. “She was the smallest of the three girls, and the cutest,” her sister, Sandhya, said.

If she had a taste for the exotic, she also had a knack for making her home into a comfortable palace. There were beautiful paintings and shelves full of books. There were plants and scented candles. “She treated these things likes sacred objects,” her mother, Lakshmi, said.

The lost echoes of her full-throated laughter. The memory of her smile across the dinner table. Her postcards mailed from distant countries. This is all that remains of Ms. Chalasani.

Her family guards them like the sacred objects they have now become.

(FOX NEWS) – President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America,” then joked that the Atlantic and Pacific oceans could be next.

“As you know, we took something called the Gulf of Mexico, we changed it, and now it’s very routinely the Gulf of America,” Trump said.

“So if you think about it, we have a gulf and we have a lake. Now all we need is an ocean,” he continued. “So maybe we’ll have to change the name of the Atlantic and or the Pacific. Maybe we’ll change them both.”

Trump declared the Lake Ontario change “official, effective immediately” while announcing the order.

“And finally, it’s the purpose of this more than anything else is we’re going to be changing the name of Lake Ontario, effective immediately to Lake America,” Trump said. “That’s going to take place right now as I signed the order.”

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Tropical Storm Dolly continues moving rapidly westward across the Atlantic Ocean and could approach the Leeward Islands this weekend, according to the National Hurricane Center.

As of 5 p.m. ET, the center of Dolly is moving west at approximately 24 mph, a motion expected to continue during the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained winds remained near 40 mph, with higher gusts. Tropical-storm-force winds extended outward up to 60 miles from the storm’s center.

Forecasters expect little change in strength during the next 48 hours.

Dolly is forecast to weaken into a tropical wave before reaching the Leeward Islands.

No coastal watches or warnings are currently in effect, but residents and visitors in the Leeward Islands should closely monitor the system’s progress.

Heavy rainfall associated with Dolly could begin affecting the Leeward Islands late Saturday and continue into Sunday.

The rain is expected to spread into the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Hispaniola on Sunday and Monday.

The National Hurricane Center warned that heavy rain could produce flash flooding, particularly across mountainous and other higher-terrain areas of the Leeward Islands.

BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – Health First’s Viera Hospital has earned another prestigious spot on the new Forbes list of Top Hospitals by State. 

Earning a 5-star Overall Hospital Quality Rating on the publication’s Forbes Top Hospitals by State 2026, Viera is one of only 10 hospitals (out of more than 370) in the state of Florida, and the only hospital in Brevard County to receive the five-star rating.

Published in late July, the Forbes rankings recognize hospitals delivering outstanding quality based on publicly available data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Provider Data Catalog.

Viera Hospital in March was named to its second straight Forbes’ 2026 list of Top Hospitals in America – earning a 5-Star recognition. And that recognition helped Viera qualify for Forbes’ inaugural best-in-state list.

Forbes’ Top Hospitals 2026 national list and ratings system assessed general acute care hospitals across the U.S.

This inaugural best-in-state list is a subset of the national list and is designed to identify the top hospitals in each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C. To be eligible for this state list, hospitals were required to have met the criteria for evaluation on the national list and been given an overall star rating. Among this group of hospitals, Forbes then calculated, on average, the top 30 percent of hospitals in each state using the star rating percentiles.

Hospitals were evaluated across four key areas: patient outcomes, hospital best practices, value and patient experience. Each hospital receives an Overall Hospital Quality Rating ranging from one-to-five stars – with five stars representing the highest level of performance.
