The Costa del Azahar – known as the Orange Blossom Coast – is located in the province of Castellon, the most northerly part of Valencia. It lies between Catalonia in the north and the Costa Blanca in the south. This picturesque coastline is around 115 kms long and is where rugged mountain back drops, nature parks and lovely golden beaches are abound.

Although the most popular holiday resorts are Denia and Gandia in the southern part, the Costa del Azahar offers much more than just beaches and holiday resorts and is a land of many contrasts. It`s excellent location is within easy reach of the cities of Valencia, Barcelona and Castellon.

Some of the best beaches can be found at Benicassim, Castello-Grao, Alcossebre, Peniscola, Oropesa, Torreblanca, Benicarló y Vinarós

As in all other parts of Spain there are many fiestas to enjoy in towns all along the Orange blossom coast Costa Azahar including San Antonio in Benicassim on the 17th January. The Vinarós carnivals in February, the Magdalena during March in Castellón, the fiestas of San Juan are on the 24th of June. The Oropesa fiestas from the 25th of July, Santo Tomás is on the 22nd of September in Benicassim, and the Peníscola fiestas between the 7th to the 16th of October.

The top holiday resorts along the coast include:

Càlig is set inland from Vinarôs and Benicarlo and is a tranquil Spar village offering an ideal blend of modern and traditional. There is a good nightlife, a decent smuttering of shops and has easy access to all other facilities. The annual fiesta in Calig is celebrated during August with a 10 day fest…. not to be missed.

Vinarôs – is the first town you come across when entering the Costa Azahar. This ancient town offers a fine beach at El Forti which runs from the port to the mouth of the River Servol which is famous for its langostinos ( prawns). For fiestas lovers the two major ones are the San Antonio in January, the festival of San Sebastian and the carnivals held in February each year.

Peñiscola – This historic city is replete with medieval architecture and has a fine monumental heritage. Located in the northern part of the Costa Azahar, Pensicola has some amazing beaches and superb choice of Leisure facilities. There are is also plenty of shops, restaurants and bars along its long beach front area to please everyone. The medieval fortification gives the town real historic feel with the castle dating from the 13th and 15th centuries. Built originally by the Knights Templar it was completed by the Montesianos in the 14th century. The castle was particularly famous for being the home of Pope Benedicte XIII, Pedro de Luna from 1411 to 1423 and is a fine example of military architecture dating from the early Middle Ages. A visit here is highly recommended as much of it still remains including the stables, a grand hall and a beautiful interior plaza.

Cullera - lies on the bank of the River Xuqer at the base of the Zorros mountain range and is a typical Spanish village popular to both local residents and international travelers alike. Cullera has some fine beaches located in the Raco, San Antonio and Santa Marta areas of the town. The town is famous for its rice production, grown in the wetlands around the area, a local produce which forms the substance of many of the traditional Valencian rice dishes, there is even a small museum in the town dedicated to rice . There are also some large freshwater lagoons populated with carpe and eels, great for fishing lovers.

Denia - lies around 7 km north of Javea reached along a stunning and spectacular mounting road. It is a picturesque town popular and resort with international travelers and offers magnificent beaches and a superb collection of fine restaurants. Although the town has an medieval castle the undoubted attraction here are the beaches and trying out some of the mouth watering local rice dishes in one of the many restaurants located along the beach front area.

Javea - is probably the most important holiday resorts in the areaWith some of the best beaches along he Costa Azahar. Javea is divied into 3 areas. Javea Pueblo (the old town). Javea Puerto (the port area), and Playa de Arenal (the main beach area). It is well worth spending a few hours walking around the old town taking in the atmosphere and charm of its history including a few gothic style buildings. There is also a busy food market which is well worth a visit during the morning hours. Although the harbor area is still used as a fishing port it is also a trendy marina with the modern yachts mixing with the local fishing fleet. The port area has a splendid promenade with many open air terraced restaurants to enjoy during the long warm nights of summer.

The Restuarant Arzak - San Sebastian

I am not sure what it is about the north of Spain that produces chefs of such brilliance.

Juan Mari Arzak is no exception other than being exceptional, and then what happens, he has daughter and she also reins supreme in the kitchen alongside her father, one of the undisputed kings of cookery.

The restaurant which bares his name is located in San Sebastian and is owned and run by one of the founding fathers of the Nuevo Cocina Vasca. He is aided expertly by his daughter Elena, a master chef in her own right. There is a special menu of the day which includes appetizers, two meats, a cheese plate and two desserts.

The chef makes his rounds and chats with the regulars. This is one of Spain's first three star Michelin restaurants and reservations are a must. The decor is traditional with the dining area being spacious but not large and retains intimacy. The clientele is mainly older patrons, most of whom are locals.

Chef Juan Mari and his team opened a culinary research laboratory, located next door the restaurant back in 2001. It is now aptly run by another two fine chefs, Xabier Gutierrez and Igor Zalakain. The lab is full of the latest technical equipment and is home to around 1.600 flavours and scents from around the world which are all sorted and classified. New ideas for dishes are created here which will be used in future recipes at this world famous restaurant.

Malaga - The Old Quarter

Malaga is the second largest city in Southern Spain, after Sevilla, and the Capital of the Costa Del Sol. With a population of around 650.000 inhabitants it is recognised as having the best climate for any city of its size in Europe.

Of the many hundreds of thousands of visitors to the province of Malaga each year many of whom will not venture into the City of Malaga itself, which is a great shame as the city has been transformed over the past few years specially the historic quarter. It is also the grand father to the popular surrounding holiday resorts of Benalmadena, Torremolinos, Fuengirola and the chic resort of Marbella.

The cultural heritage of Malaga can now take centre stage and is home to the Picasso Museum which is housed in the beautiful old Palacio de la Bellavista. Picasso is probably Malaga’s most famous son and the impressive Picasso museum is testament to that fact. Around 150 pieces of Picassos are exhibited on two floors and include paintings, drawings, sculptures and lithographs.

The house where Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born is located on the Plaza de la Merced, 3 minutes walk from the museum. There you can see things relating to the life and work from all the different periods of his exceptional life and is an interesting stop over even if art is not your thing.

Proudly watching over this cosmopolitan capital is the Castillo de Gibralfaro and the Alcazaba ( Moorish fortress ). The castle dates back to the 14^th century and has pretty fountains and fine manicured gardens whilst the origins of the Alcazaba date to the 11^th century, both have impressive views over Malaga, the port area and the Mediterranean sea.

The historic Malaga Cathedral is affectionately known as “La Manguita“ the one armed lady, as only one of the two planned towers where ever finished.

The old part of Malaga is the most interesting area and is located two minutes walk from the new port all around the Cathedral. The narrow streets which wind off in all directions from Larios Street ooze Andalucian charm, the area is perfect for afternoon walks, specially in the in spring and summer months where you will come across some of the best restaurants and Tapas bars in the area which sit alide historic buildings such as the Picasso Museum and charming old Andalucian plazas.

Mallorca is one of the most popular holiday destinations of Europe. The largest island of the Balearic Islands is more than a holiday destination with sun, white sandy beaches and a great nightlife, it is an island rich in architecture and enchanting mountain villages that are blessed with that kind of still tranquillity that can bring you back to your senses.

Mallorca or Majorca, which one is correct ? well both are fine to use.On the island itself it is known as Mallorca, and comes from the Catalan language which is frequently spoken on this island. However many years ago the Island was known as Majorca (meaning Major Island of the Balearics). It is also commonly known as Majorca in the English speaking world though.

The island has an area of ??about 3,600 square kilometres, 554 of coastline and a population of less than a million inhabitants. The average annual temperature is of about 19 degrees Celsius and there is a yearly average of 3000 hours of sunshine, excellent good reasons to start looking for a property for sale in Mallorca.

Mallorca also known as the island of dreams has a varied landscape of mountains, valleys, pine forests, olive and almond trees and beaches. Other attractions include the Caves of Drach, the Sierra de Tramuntana and the Sanctuary of Lluc, the spiritual centre of Mallorca. One of the most representative buildings, architecturally speaking, is the Bellver Castle, as it is one of the only three European castles in existence with a circular form.

The Son Sant Joan international airport , located 8 km from Palma de Mallorca, is the main gateway to the island. There is a wide range of direct flights from many European cities, especially from Germany and the UK. If you arrive by sea, there are daily connections from different ports of the peninsula such as Barcelona, Valencia, Denia and other ports of the Balearic Islands such as Ibiza, Mahon and Ciutadella.

The Plaza de España in Palma is connected to all towns and resorts on the island through a bus network that also connects you to the airport, the beach or the University.In this same square there is a line of trains to Inca, Manacor and Sa Pobla. Another train, in this case mainly for tourism, is the electric train which has been running since 1912, through the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains from Palma to Soller.

One of the biggest draws for a huge number of holiday makers to the Island of Mallorca are the fantastic and often very quiet coves or Calas as they are known as in Spanish. The Calas have superb beaches, secure bathing and crystal clean waters .

They are a great places to chill out, safe for all the family to enjoy the sand, sea and the local cuisine. The south east coast is home to the S´ Amarador beach which it sits in the Mondrago National Park and is a well preserved and unspoilt beach with magnificent views over the clear blue Mediterranean sea. It is made up of fine white sand and has often been voted the best beach in Spain.

The Ronda Parador - A Unique Hotel in the heart of Malaga

There are around 90 paradors scattered all over Spain and can be found in the most privileged locations such as Castles, Palaces, Fortresses, Convents, Monasteries and other historic buildings.

One of these unique paradors is located in the centre of Ronda, located some 60 kms north west from Marbella on the Costa del Sol. It was formerly the cities Town Hall and is located right next to the Puente Nuevo, one of Southern Spain’s most visited national monuments, and if you visit Ronda you will immediately understand why it is such a popular destination for visitors to the area.

The views out from the hotels are stunning, specially if your room looks directly down to the bottom of the gorge some 120 meters below.

Local cuisine is always on offer et every Parador around Spain and this one is no exception, here you will find quality elaborated dishes such as “ajo blanco” a cold garlic soup, “Conejo a la Rodeña” a rabbit and almond soup, one of my favourites is “ Salmorejo” a thicker type of Gaspacho soup topped off with local olive oil and cured jam.

And for those of you with a sweet tooth you must try "Yemas Rondenas" (sweet egg yolk flans) these are very addictive, "Queso de Almendras" (almonds and cheese) and ), "Tortitas de Miel" ( large honey biscuits ).

If you like exploring every nook and cranny of historic towns on foot, then Ronda is for you. Apart from the Puente Nuevo there is a long list of must visit places around Ronda including the bullring, the Cathedral, the Minaret of San Sebastian, Mondragon Palace, the prehistoric paintings of the Pileta cave, Arabic Baths, Museo Lara and the mercadillo quarter of the town. And for something different why not walk down ( and up again !) the 365 steps of the Mina stairway which was cut by the Christian slaves in the fourteenth century.

The Ronda Parador offers private balconies in each of the 78 rooms available , many offering views of the surrounding mountains.

The Golden Tower - Sevilla

The “Torre de Oro” Tower of Gold is one of the most easily recognised and photographed historic landmarks in Sevilla and is located in the citys historic centre next to the Guadalquivir river .

The tower was constructed around 1220 by order of Abu Eola, the governor at that time and formed part of the city’s defensive walls and was linked to an octagonal tower, the Silver Tower ( Torre de Plata ) The copula shaped top of the golden tower was built in 1760.

The tower probably got its name from the gilded ceramic tiles which originally decorated the tower, or maybe from the time when Gold was unloaded here during the time when Sevilla was a major player in world trade.

It is used today as a navel museum with a really impressive collection relating to the city’s rich naval past.

Due to the warm climate of Spain and traditions of its people, there is a different daily routine to observe while you're on holiday here. Be prepared to readjust your body clock, so that you are in tune to the 'Spanish schedule' and get the most of your experience.

Two notable differences that you need to be aware of are meal times and siestas. It can be difficult or frustrating to find that there is little to do during the siesta period of around 1:30 PM until 5:00 PM, thus it is important to plan ahead and make sure you don't need to shop during that time, as most stores close for the siesta period In terms of mealtimes, breakfast and dinner are generally eaten at around 10 AM and 9 PM, respectively, with restaurants opening at around 7 PM, so remember to either eat a late lunch, or have a small snack to tide you over, if you're used to eating dinner earlier.

La Sagrada Familia - probably Gaudi’s most well known and visible masterpieces. It is the most visited tourist attraction in Barcelona with over 2 Million visitors each year . It is a structure and ongoing building of immense proportions and respected by architects around the world. It was started in 1882 and will not be finished for another 20 to 25 years !!.
