Building a Dream Car

I’ve been a car buff for as long as I can remember. From a vintage 1932 track nose Ford to the 2013 Lamborghini Aventador, I could almost say that I have never met a car that I don’t like. I admit to being drawn to the character of older cars though because of their distinctive designs.

My first car was a 1981 Datsun 280 Z turbo. That car was tough! I liked the feeling of the t-tops and driving it was so much fun. But I didn’t have a reliable mechanic and at the time, I was still in college working a part-time job. I didn’t have the money to restore it to my liking. So, unfortunately I had to let it go.

Once I graduated college I was cruising down the freeway and noticed a 1979 Monte Carlo parked at a gas station. It didn’t have a “for sale” sign on it but I couldn’t resist and had to inquire about it. Although the owner told me he wasn’t selling it, I just had to have it and managed to convince him to sell it to me. I still own this car today and have invested 11 years so far into restoring it.

If you can’t do it, better find somebody who can

Any car hobbyist can tell you that a car is never completely restored to their liking. There is always something you want to add or improve. As technology advances, there are new ways to upgrade your older car so that it drives better and is more reliable. Because of this restoration process, I’ve learned that if you are not skilled in car mechanics, you better find someone reliable who is. I have two ‘go-to’ mechanics that I can count on. One specializes in classic car restorations and general repairs. The other one works on air suspensions and hydraulics.

Monte Carlo Cruising

I enjoy taking my Monte Carlo out to shows and cruise nights. I like seeing other people’s cars and what they are working on. I enjoy engaging with people who share my passion for cars and getting ideas for my ongoing build. It’s also a good feeling to get behind the wheel of a vehicle you put so much work into and being able to drive in on the open road.

My Ultimate Car

If I ever build my ultimate car, it would be a 1963 Corvette Grand Sport by Mongoose Motor Sports – all black. I love the classic design, split window and muscular body. I like the idea of having a classic car with modern technology like today’s suspension, transmission and engine performance. Talk about building a dream car!

I’ve helped develop and fine-tune one of the biggest summer motor shows in Central New Jersey. Every year we put on a car, truck and bike show that draws 300+ owners from across the country. Car owners from various states put miles on their classic cars like –Chevy Bel Airs, Ford Mustangs, Chevy Corvettes, Chevy Chevelles, Pontiac GTOs and more just to see other models and to ultimately be seen. With hopes on expanding the car show and ultimately growing my graphic t-shirt business, I am hopeful that building my dream car will become a reality.
