Spartan Defender http://spartandefender.org Sparta High School's Online Newspaper Wed, 11 Apr 2012 19:30:01 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.3.1 A Half Day Every 3rd Wednesday http://spartandefender.org/2012/01/a-half-day-every-3rd-wednesday/ http://spartandefender.org/2012/01/a-half-day-every-3rd-wednesday/#comments Mon, 16 Jan 2012 20:58:41 +0000 kedmison http://spartandefender.org/?p=2991 Students at Sparta High are released from school every third Wednesday of the month at 12:20, giving the lunch time at 12:20-1:05.
“We do this so we can accomplish things we are unable to in the regular school day. Our staff benefits by collaborating about topics, they are unable to within their prep times”, says Mr. Sam Russ.
Students may think this is a great idea, only for the thought of getting out of school early, but it is much more than that.
Russ adds, “Students will increase in academic achievement and learning from this because their teachers are working towards their achievement.”
The meetings we go through have are very valuable to both students and staff.
“We explain in depth and talk about final exams, which is easier to make changes, we submit notes and reviews, which overall helps out the teachers by collaborating, and helps students in the end as well” says, Russ.
Although this works well for the High School, it may not work as well for other schools.
Russ adds, “Can definitely be a burden to the lower level schools.”

Sparta High School In Need of New Books http://spartandefender.org/2012/01/new-books/ http://spartandefender.org/2012/01/new-books/#comments Mon, 16 Jan 2012 20:51:27 +0000 mspeicher http://spartandefender.org/?p=1977 Students and staff at Sparta High school are talking about getting new books and how bad of condition the old ones are.

Sam Russ, the principal of Sparta High school says, “The money for our books comes from our curriculum budget and work books come from our High school budget.”

Although, what is a curriculum budget and how do we get the money?

Tom Stewart says, “Curriculum has different meanings, they can be grants from federal funding which is funded by Karl Perkins or they can be funded through regular taxable funding.”

There is always left over money that has a purpose, but some wonder where it really goes.

Stewart replies, “The referendum has the money in it from previous years, when we use money from the previous year and we add more in, yet don’t use it there is always going to be left over money, here at Sparta High School.”

Some subjects really are in need of books, versus other subjects. Also some subjects don’t use their books but some don’t even use books.

Kevin Kravik, a Social Studies teacher says, “We need new Geography books because the ones we have pages falling out and the bindings are ripping out, plus they are dated back to 1999.” “I think that just getting a classroom set would be beneficial as well, they would stay in good condition.”

Subjects are scheduled to get new books, through a rotational process, although it can be confusing.

Stewart says, “It depends on the need and also, I rotate the books.” “Physical science, just got new books, but recently Math, U.S history, Spanish, and Economics classrooms got new books.”

Some teachers feel that online books would be a great thing to happen at Sparta High school, although are unsure if it will get to that point.

Kravik adds, “I thought about doing books online, but don’t think it will happen before four years, also getting I Pads was an option in my mind, they would run off the Wi-Fi offered here at Sparta.”

Some teachers and students are wondering if we will ever get online books, I Pads, or laptops.

Kravik adds, “I can definitely see going paperless; and I think it will be beneficial for the students, they would no longer be lugging around the heavy books.”

Russ stated, “I believe the future books will be online and I Pads are a possibility but as of now some books are online but have a classroom set at hand.”

Boilers need replacing http://spartandefender.org/2012/01/boilers-need-replacing/ http://spartandefender.org/2012/01/boilers-need-replacing/#comments Fri, 13 Jan 2012 20:40:06 +0000 MichelleHerrman http://spartandefender.org/?p=2905 At the board meeting January 10th, one of the topics that was being discussed was the boilers and the possible replacement of them. The boilers at the high school and the A and E center are 1990 models and need to be replaced. The shoulder boiler at the high school is espcially under urgent need to be replaced due to a crack in the boiler. Even though the crack has been patched it is only ninety-five percent fixed.

Dan Korn talked about replacing the boiler in the 2000 edition with two smaller boilers that would be a more ideal solution because, they would be more effeicent and if one of the smaller boilers were to have problems the other small boiler could pick of the slack from the broken down boiler

According to Mr. Konz, head of building and grounds; the hot water boilers at the A and E center  that were installed in 1986 are in need of fifteen to twenty thousand dollars of operating repairs. One of the things that needs to be repaired on the large boilers are the big doors due to the refractory starting to break down. They are looking at tearing out possibly one boiler or possibly both and replacing one boiler with two smaller boilers. Which means depending on the engineer study if both large boilers were to get torn out they would be replaced with four smaller boilers. The smaller boilers would mean new boilers for the building as well as energy savings.

Being Apart of The Office Crew http://spartandefender.org/2012/01/2900/ http://spartandefender.org/2012/01/2900/#comments Fri, 13 Jan 2012 20:33:13 +0000 kedmison http://spartandefender.org/?p=2900 At Sparta High school students can get a .5 credit by being an office worker.
Mrs. Dawn Schmidt; attendance secretary adds, “Office helper is a .5 credit class that helps the student develops clerical skills, social skills, and confidentiality skills.”
Being an office helper comes with many duties, and responsibilities.
Tyler Skidmore; senior comments, “I deliver notes, deliver detentions, take students out of class, do flyers, also do the pictures in the case, I just do random tasks that the secretaries ask of me.”
The duty of an office worker involves many works- like skills.  Mrs Schmidt says, “They are responsible for being prompt, reliable, and efficient.”
Being an officer worker is a class that has to fit in a student’s schedule.
Mrs Schmidt adds, “The guidance counselor recommend it to students also as secretaries we like the students to come ask before they sign up for our approval; we will never deny anybody.”
“Office worker is basically a study hall, gives .5 credits and I love being with Mrs. Schmidt and Mrs. Kogukiewicz,” commented Tyler Skidmore.
Without office workers things may get hectic in the office during school hours.
Mrs. Schmidt adds, “It would be really frustrating, we would have to ask one of the administration, which they never really have free time. Mrs. K or I would not be able to get our job done plus do different things.”
Sam Russ; principal adds, “It is a great idea to have office workers to run passes, and do the different things they do; it helps by making our jobs more efficient.”
