There are two Spawn figures from Series 1 that required no introduction. This series makes its debut in Toy Fair '94 which is always held in mid-February. The End Cap (see last few pages of comic issue) of December 1996 and the official website declared the date of official release as Winter of 1994 and December 1994 respectively, which is pretty close. Interestingly, in an advertisement found in Battlestone #1 dated November 1994, it was announced that these figures had hit the shelves in the Fall of 1994 (the Fall here refers to the autumn season in the northern hemisphere which usually starts in September). The month of December incidentally is when the playsets of Spawnmobile, Violator Monster Rig and Spawn Alley Playset were released. Read Guide on Spawn 1.

This Pressman Toys board game known as “Spawn: The Game” contains four miniature silver-washed Spawn figures: Spawn, Medieval Spawn, Commando Spawn and Pilot Spawn. Spawn and Medieval Spawn are original figures while Commando Spawn and Pilot Spawn are replicas of existing figures. July incidentally is a “guesstimated” date. I wrote to Pressman Toys but they could not recall the date of release either.

Series 3 has several very interesting Spawns. There is the first re-appearance of Spawn, titled as Spawn II. Besides the distinctive half-mask (gosh, it reminds me of Spider-Man comics) and maroon cape, Spawn is adorned in an all black suit, which became de rigeur for all subsequent Spawn figures for nearly seven years until the re-emergence of the red-ribcage Spawn under Image 10th Anniversary Special in December 2002.

End Cap in February 1997 however mentioned the release as December of 1995 and Fall of 1995 respectively for the two sets.

Above is a 6-Pack released widely among retail and warehouse chains in the US, e.g. Costco, Sam's Club and Warehouse Club. This is not the only 6-Pack version, there are variations containing other figures. This figure was released before the original Exo-Skeleton Spawns of Series 4. It was released as an exclusive to test the market with regards the change of name from Todd Toys to McFarlane Toys...that's the official statement from McFarlane Toys anyway. We know for a fact that it is sold in the US as a Target Store exclusive and in Japan under license by Reds and he is nicknamed by collectors as 'Christmas Spawn', probably due to its proximity to the festive period during release.

The Spawn inside the exo-skeleton is based on Spawn II but with different paint scheme. This is a series with substantial variants, both intentional and unintentional, thus making for a great collection. See http://spawncollection.blogspot.com/ for detailed explanation.

Spawn: The Movie was one of the participant at the Cannes Films Festival and to commemorate the event, a souvenir was released, many collectors erroneously described it as 3", it is not, it is a very healthy 6". Official site said release date is January 1997 - what they meant is that the figure was made in January 1997. It was sent to the festival which runs from May 7th to the 18th. Note that the movie was released on August 1st 1997 in the US but only in February and November 1998 in Japan and Singapore respectively.

There is no "real" repaint for Spawn III of Series 7 and instead in its place, we have an exclusive (KB Toys in the US) based on Spawn III. Unlike the original Spawn III, this exclusive is without mask and is adorned with a fixed vinyl cape instead of an extendable fabric cape. This figure is commonly and erroneously assumed to be part of the Movie Series. There are two reasons why this mistake was commonly made: firstly, its name coincide with that of another Burnt Spawn from the Movie Series and secondly, the proximity of its release to that of the Movie series.

Incidentally this US’s Toys R Us Exclusive is the fourth and last Spawn figure to be housed in a display case.

One of the most sought-after figure in Spawndom, the Black Mandarin, made under license by Cult Works of Japan. The figure is first released at the 2000 McFarlane Figures Show in Japan organised by Epoch, the local distributor. It was later adopted by MTCC and released in greater numbers under its club banner. McFarlane Toys said it is possible that there is a typo in the spawn.com checklist's which indicate release date of their Black Mandarin as January 1999.

The Japanese edition is by far the more "in-demand" edition, both because of its first appearance and that there are less of them. You can differentiate the Japanese version from the MTCC version through the stickers.

February 2002 Series 21 Original: Alien Spawn II
The issuance of Series 21, titled Alternate Realities reignite interests among the shrinking Spawn Collecting community. This all-spawn collection, only the third, proves that the majority favours Spawn over its supporting casts. Alien Spawn II or the second type of Alien Spawn looks distinctively different from that of its predecessors (Series 6 August 1996).

This is an official "unintentional" variant and it is very common. It was in production when McFarlane decided to make a running change. In fact over this part of the world, he is the only figure available at retail, making the Original Yellow item a rarity.

The box set of Series 21 appeared four months later and it is based on an art found inside Spawn #83. This popular figure was re-released again in May 2008 without fanfare, so much so that the moderators at the Message Board were caught unaware.

July 2002 Series 22 Original: Spawn the Bloodaxe
The fourth dark ages lineup features the second Viking Spawn after Series 5 of July 1996. The people at McFarlane Toys obviously have yet to comprehend the fact that collectors prefer Spawn and one Spawn in a series is just not good enough. Despite this series being one of the most outstanding series in Spawndom and one of our favourite, it is not particularly well received and thus failed the first hurdle of capturing existing clientele after an earlier successful series preceding it. To differentiate him from the repaint, remember that the helmet of Erik the Viking has 1 and a half horns! Some would say the principal identification method is the axe but accessories may be misplaced.

August 2002 SDCC Exclusive: Spawn the Bloodaxe
An exclusive to the 2002 San Diego Comicon featuring a silver-washed Bloodaxe that is meant to be a prequel of the repaint to come.

September 2002 Retail Exclusive: Spawn the Evolution
Sold by Game Stop (US), Sears (Canada) and licensed by Takara, the successor of Cult Works in Japan, this box set titled 'Spawn the Evolution' features Spawn I and Spawn V with minor touch-up. This is a single card but for the display collectors, there are two figures that can be displayed.

Spawn I is the 8th version of the original Spawn - he is differentiated from the original Series 1 Spawn through the following: a maroon arch behind him, a sexy pink skull emblem on the belt, metallic-coloured chains around the waist and a grey plank. Meanwhile, Spawn V is the 3rd version and he is finished in gloss rather than the original matt.

Bloodaxe has a helmet that covers the face. The boxset to the original series arrived into store late. The figure has a very beautifully sculpted horse called Thunderhoof. This is the second horse figure in Spawndom - the first is that of Spawn Battle Horse playset in Series 3.

November 2002 MTCC Exclusive: Spawn 3
A second repaint of Spawn III arrives in 2002 in the form of a MTCC Exclusive. It is essentially 1997 Burnt Spawn (the first repaint) with mask. Incredibly, the official site said this figure has been released since February 1997! Made in February 1997 probably but definitely not released in February 1997.

Released as a toy series from the Soul Calibur II video game. There are two versions: masked version is exclusive to GameStop in the US. This is an exact duplicate released earlier under 2003 SDCC Exclusive. The difference is in the accessory, this second version has an axe.

This series launched the hugely popular Art of Spawn franchise (I still remember the excitement this series creates even with non-Spawn collectors). Known then as the Classic Comic Cover Series because it is based on the covers of Spawn comics. Hellspawn i.001 refers to figure based on the cover art of Hellspawn #1, a spinoff from the regular Spawn comics.

January 2004 Retail Exclusive: Manga Spawn Robots
An exclusive to Wal-Mart but available in retail outside the US, the 'Manga Spawn Robots' 2-Pack features:

the fourth repaint version of Manga Spawn (Series 9) in blood red, gold sword and gold ‘M’;

the long-awaited first repaint of Manga Samurai Spawn (Series 10) in black body and yellow mustard armour and the Manga Samurai Spawn has optional headsculpts - that of either the stag helmet or a trojan helmet. For card collector, this is one card but for display collectors, a potential of three figures.

June 2004 Licensed Exclusive: Spawn Chains of Destiny
Exclusive only in Japan, this PS2 game pre-order promotional figure features the same-old same-old 4” figure that the manufacturer has been hawking around since the 2003 San Diego Comicon days. In the US, the video game is known as Spawn: Armageddon. This duplicate figure does not even have an accessory to differentiate it from the original. Display collector can safely do without this figure.

June 2004 Reborn Series 2: Cyber Spawn
This series was another all-Spawn lineup. It introduced us to a second repaint of Cyber Spawn in white.

A garishly repainted Spawn RL3 that first appeared in 2001 and titled as Interlink Spawn. He is the only one of the six interlink spawns to be repainted, prompting speculation of future Reborn Series with more Interlink Spawns that would allow collectors to recreate the Interlink-6 Spawn.

April 2007 Blister Exclusive: Kubrick Spawn
To celebrate their 2nd anniversary, Blister, a huge toys retail store in Japan released several exclusives, among them is this Kubrick Spawn clear version. Because of delay among the original and variant figures, this exclusive which was meant to appear 3 months after the release of the other Kubricks became the first to appear, dampening the "feel-good" factor of an exclusive. Got mine rather easily despite the claim of limited stocks (1,500 is a lot of stock).

May 2007 Medicom Exclusive: Kubrick Spawn
Medicom, in tandem with McFarlane (M&M) released the kubrick versions of Series 1 along with most of the repaints and variants. There are 4 distorted versions of the original Spawn: the black masked is the most common. Original date of release was January 2007.

Unmasked, meant to be a distorted version of the original but which original? Spawn 1 of January 1995 or Spawn 1 of June 1996? Looking at the colour of the face, it got to be the fourth version of Spawn 1, ie June 1996.

Both black unmasked and gold-washed Kubrick Spawns are rather rare. For example, if there are 20,000 figures made, both of them would be in the region of 134 figures found. Originally slated for arrival in January but postponed several times. Appeared in eBay around May.

This DC Direct limited edition hand painted coldcast porcelain statue of Spawn/Batman that was seen in the November 2006 issue of Preview was originally due in December 2006 but arrived only in June 2007. This would certainly be the most expensive official Spawn yet.

September 2007 Trading Series 2 Original: Spawn (HS issue 1 cover art)
The second Trading Series of intricately sculpted 3" figures moved away from the blind box concept and instead of three versions per figure, reduced it to only two. Of the eight figures in this second trading series, only six are that of Spawns: the first is Hellspawn i.001 in a black suit and red cape that has no resemblance to existing 6" figure.

Retailer Exclusive: Spawn Weapons of Mass Destruction 3-Pack Strictly for card collectors, this is a rehash of existing Spawn figures released by Diamond Distribution in the US market. The original trio was Spawn 4, Spawn i.7 and Spawn i.131 but Spawn 4 was eventually replaced by Spawn i.95 (or Spawn 8) which really does not make any sense.

October 2007 Supersize Series 7 - Spawn X
Since 2004, the supersize edition has been a regular yearly feature but in 2007, after announcing that a supersize Spawn X would be released in September/October, it was surreptitiously removed from the listing. The circle has been broken.

October 2007 Series 32 Original: Spawn X
Adventures of Spawn, the cutesy cartoon version as compared to the adult-oriented rottingly ugly Spawn launched a second series of figures that was released in October (in certain part of f Asia, it is March 2008). Of the seven figures announced, only four are that of Spawns. Spawn X gets a repaint and he is attired in blue instead of black.

As with the original, you can have an option of either masked or unmasked.

There is the introduction of the Omega Squadron, a supporting contingent created by Omega Spawn. Now the Omega Squadron in the comics consists of Bot 1, Bot 2, Bot 3 and Bot 4 - so expect to collect four figures.

McFarlane toys declared its 2008 as going to be a very big year, well, for other toys perhaps, certainly not Spawn. It was a very quiet year topped by the 'cancellation' of Series 35.

March 2008 Medicom Series Variant - VCD Spawn

April 2008 Series 33 Original - Spawn the Immortal
Series 33 is about the Age of Pharoahs. Features six figures and ONLY one Spawn! Unbelievable, the last time this happened was the release of the disastrous Series 23. Together with Warrior Isis (previously styled only as Isis), Jackal King (previously styled as Anubis), Solider of Ra, Scarab Assassin and Sebek is Spawn the Immortal (previously styled as Osiris). Date of release was postponed from March to April.

June 2008 Series 34 Original: Manga Spawn 2
Initially titled as 'Neo-Classics'; by January 2008, it was titled simply as 'Spawn Classics'. Curiously, there are only four figures in this series, of which three are Spawns. One of the most disappointing is the much anticipated sequel to Manga Spawn.

July 2008 SDCC Exclusive: Halo Spawn

October 2008: Series 35 - Robots
Six figures of Robotic Spawns were announced but after some preliminary appearances it was removed from the official website, announcement is pending as to the outcome.

December 2008 Series 21 Exclusive: Raven Spawn
This figure, originally scheduled to appear in tandem as an exclusive to Spawn: Book of the Dead in 2002 finally make its belated appearance 6 years later. Once upon a time, this figure commands a king's ransom but with a reported 3,000 of them in circulation, it is no longer rare.

Limited edition 8" resin statue with a release of 1,000 figures. All 1,000 have been snapped up in advance booking in September 2008.

Jun 2009 MTCC McFarlane Collector's Edition: The Beginning
Based on the promotional image released in Malibu #13 in 1992. 1,500 figures of this 8" resin statue would be released - with and without McFarlane's $15 signature.

McFarlane Toys are returning to the Art of Spawn franchise. Unveiled during the July 2008 SDCC is the following: Curse of the Spawn i001, Spawn i001, Spawn i163 and a Hellspawn. Nothing on the official site yet though.
