Stick to your native language

Some parents in non-bilingual families might be tempted to start speaking a foreign language to their children to teach kids French or some other language of their choice, but that is really not a good idea for various reasons.

First, when you speak your native language, you can communicate everything you want to as good as you possibly can, and the child will learn a complete, versatile language. That is vital for thinking and problem solving and helps them verbalize their thoughts and feelings. Learning French vocabulary can be tedious work, and there is really no way around it. You have to learn plenty of words to speak French fluently. However, you can improve your learning results if you use all your senses in the learning process. See how it goes:

• If you hear a word list, you will remember 20% of it.
• If you see a word list, you will remember 30% of it.
• If you hear and see the words, you will remember 50% of them.
• If  you hear, see and repeat the words, you will remember 70%.
• If you hear, see, repeat and write the words down, you will remember 90% of them!

Once you know which way you are looking at while thinking of the word, you can find the word later by turning your eyes to the same direction again.

Over-pronounce the words. Think about how the words feel and sound like.

Listening and speaking

Listen to some French text in short bits. It can be from a French language learning software or just any French book. Listen closely and repeat what you heard. Watch TV in French. Listen to what the characters say, repeat their lines and imitate their pronunciation and intonation. It doesn’t matter if you don’t understand everything that’s being said, the most important thing is to practice French conversation. Listen to French songs and sing along.

Talk to yourself while doing your everyday chores and explain what you are doing, for example “now I’m going to take some water from the fridge. I need a glass, and next I take some ice cubes…”.

Read French texts aloud and aim for fluency. This is a great way to get used to the French sentences and learn fluent French.

Don’t worry if you don’t understand everything. Concentrate on whole sentences and don’t worry about not understanding some individual words. The main thing is that you understand what’s being talked about. Try using French with native speakers or even go study French in France! You think you can’t speak French? Reading

If you are a visual learner, choose a quiet place without any distractions, and read the text. Take a moment to visualize what you just read in your mind. That helps you to understand and remember the text.

If you are an auditive learner, read the text aloud or record it, and listen to it. You can also ask someone else to read the text to you. You might learn better while listening to the music while reading, but try to avoid music with any vocals. The research shows that hearing any spoken language (even if you don’t know the language) disturbs the learning process. Also, random noises can make it harder to concentrate.

If you are mostly a kinesthetic learner, do something while reading. Sit on a gym ball, exercise on a treadmill, have something in your hands or move around. You can also try recording the text and listening to it while doing other things. Take breaks if you feel that you need them.

There are numerous different ways to study written text. Try reading the table of content and trying to guess what the text will be about, underlining, making mind maps, asking questions from yourself, making summaries.. Find your preferred learning style and make the best of it!

Writing is a good way to learn a foreign language. You learn through the physical act of writing as well.

Writing is another area where there are various techniques available, so if this area is something you are especially interested in, you may want to do some extra reading to learn all about different writing methods. I’ll introduce one way to create factual text for your language studying. Writing is a good way to teach yourself French.

First, choose a topic to write about. Then write a short introduction, and start talking about the topic. Depending on the subject matter, you can continue by writing about the pros and cons or answer questions like who, what, where, when, how and why. Then finish with a summary or solution. Some people like to write different parts of the text first and then finalize the text by rearranging their paragraphs, whereas other people prefer to create the final product right on the first attempt. In any case finish by proof-reading your whole text.

online meetings for people from all over the globe who meet to discuss the things you love, in French. Get started with a forum, but do not feel like you have to jump into every conversation. Listen to the way others express themselves. Try to imitate native French speakers’ accent and intonation.

When you are confident enough, speak up about things you know about. Start talking with others, listen to their conversations and learn the codes of courtesy they use. So much has to do with your power of observance. Audio lessons

The lessons start from easy ones and gradually build on what has been covered in the earlier lessons. The idea is that you go through them in the right order and only move on to the next lesson when you feel that you have mastered the things taught in the previous lesson. Every lesson starts with the story from the previous lesson, so you can make sure you still remember it and are ready to move on.

You will first hear a short conversation in French, which is then broken down to bits and pieces and translated to English. The lesson continues by you having to remember phrases and using them yourself, and ends with a test and a review. Repeating the sentences gives you confidence and helps you to get used to forming sentences and speaking French.

The Rocket French Audio lessons can be taken anywhere where you can listen to your mp3 player. I prefer listening to them when driving the car by myself. That’s a perfect time to try to repeat the words and give answers aloud, no matter how silly it sounds. You need to learn how to open your mouth and get the confidence to speak French and this is a good start. This is why a language learning software is so useful for learning French.

Once I get back home, I log in to my French learning lounge and go through the conversation there. First I read it in French, then in English, then I take a look at the vocabulary and finish the lesson by taking a short quiz.

One especially useful thing about the vocabulary list: when a sentence is introduced, it is often elaborated further to teach about how tiny differences change the meaning of the sentence. For example you could learn how to say “I am eating an orange” and then see how you say “I am not eating an orange” and “I am only eating an orange”.

Language and culture lessons

This is where you learn about grammar and idioms. Every lesson has a theme, so you learn the rules and practices of French while reading about an aspect of living in France, like shopping, working and restaurant culture. There is always a separate culture lesson too, which gives interesting facts about France. These lessons are amusing and interesting in general, and going through them does not feel like studying. I am someone who learns the best by writing things down, so I make my own notes while going through the lessons. Like audio lessons, the language lessons end with a quiz as well.

MegaGames

They have also included three standalone flash programs called MegaGames. The MegaGames selection works on both PC and Mac. The games are MegaVocab, which is an excellent way to practice your vocabulary, MegaVeb for verb conjugations (believe me, you will need this one!) and MegaAudio for practicing understanding spoken French. These games are fun to play!

Motivation center

Learning a new language is a lot of work, and it takes motivation and discipline. The developers of Rocket French know this all too well, and that is why Rocket French online has a motivation center, where you can test your learning style and get a lot of useful tips on how to best learn a language. After about 10 different lessons, a mixture of all the lessons available, you can take a Certificate Test which includes everything taught during those 10 lessons. You get to see your right and wrong answers after taking the test and check if there is anything you should go back to. It is a great feeling to see how much you have learned and that you actually know answers to all those questions!
