Increasing & Decreasing Functions

1. Let f : be a real function, then
(i) If , then f is said to be increasing in A.
(ii) If , then f is said to be decreasing in A.
(iii) If , then f is said to be strictly increasing in A.
(iv) If , then f is said to be strictly decreasing in A.
(v) A function f(x) is said to be monotonic in A if f(x) is either increasing (or) decreasing in A.

(i) If f '(x 0 x (a, b) and points which make f '(x) equal to zero (in between (a, b)) don't form an interval, then f(x) would be increasing in [a, b]
(ii) If f '(x 0 x (a, b) and points which make f '(x) equal to zero (in between (a, b)) don't form an interval, f(x) would be decreasing in [a, b]
(iii) If f(0) = 0 and f '(x) 0 x R, then f(x) 0 x ( , 0) and f(x) 0 x (0, )
(iv) If f(0) = 0 and f '(x) 0 x R, then f(x) 0 x ( , 0) and f(x) 0 x (0, )
(v) A function is said to be monotonic if it's either increasing or decreasing.
(vi) The points for which f '(x) is equal to zero or doesn't exist are called critical points. Here it should also be noted that critical points are the interior points of an interval.
(vii) The stationary points are the points where f '(x) = 0 in the domain.

Local Maximum and Local Minimum:
Let y = f(x) be a function defined at x = a and also in the vicinity of the point x = a. Then f(x) is said to have a local maximum at x = a, if the value of the function at x = a is greater than the value of the function at the neighbouring points of x = a. Mathematically, f(a) > f(a h) and f(a) > f(a + h) where h > 0
Similarly, f(x) is said to have a local minimum at x = a, if the value of the function at x = a is less than the value of the function at the neighbouring points of x = a.
Mathematically, f(a) < f(a h) and f(a) < f(a + h) where h > 0
A local maximum or a local minimum is also called a local extremum.

Test for Local Maximum / Minimum
We have two cases to consider

Test for Local Maximum / Minimum at x = a if f(x) is Differentiable at x = a:
If f(x) is differentiable at x = a and if it is a critical point of the function (i.e., f '(a) = 0) then we have the following three tests to decide whether f(x) has a local maximum or local mininim or neither at x = a.

i First Derivative Test:
If f '(a) = 0 and f '(x) changes it's sign while passing through the point x = a, then
(a) f(x) would have a local maximum at x = a if f '(a 0) > 0 and f '(a + 0) < 0. It means that f '(x) should change its sign from positive to negative.
(b) f(x) would have local minimum at x = a if f '(a 0) < 0 and f '(a + 0) > 0. It means that f '(x) should change its sign from negative to positive.
(c) If f(x) doesn't change its sign while passing through x = a, then f(x) would have neither a maximum nor minimum at x = a

ii. Second Derivative Test:
This test is basically the mathematical representatin of the first derivative test. It simply says that,
(a) If f '(a) = 0 and f ''(a) < 0, then f(x) would have a local maximum at x = a.
(b) If f '(a) = 0 and f ''(a) > 0, then f(x) would have a local minimum at x = a.
(c) If f '(a) = 0 and f ''(a) = 0, then this test fails and the existence of a local maximum / minimum at x = a is decided on the basis of the nth derivative test.

iii. n^thDerivative Test:
It is nothing but the general version of the second derivative test. It says that if, f '(a) = f ''(a) = ....... = f ⁿ(a) = 0 and f ^{n + 1}(a) ¹ 0 (all derivatives of the function up to order `n' vanishes and (n + 1)th order derivative does not vanish at x = a, then f(x) would have a local maximum or minimum at x = a iff n is odd natural number and that x = a would be a point of local maxima if f ^{n + 1} (a) < 0 and would be a point of local minima if f ^{n + 1}(a) > 0.
It is clear that the last two tests are basically the mathematical representation of the first derivative test. But that shouldn't diminish the importance of these tests. Because at time it's becomes very difficult to decide whether f '(x) changes it's sign or not while passing through point x = a, and then remaining tests may come handy in these type of situations.

Test for Local Maximum / Minimum at x = a if f(x) is not Differentiable at x = a:
Case I. When f(x) is continuous at x = a and f '(a h) and f '(a + h) exist and are non-zero, then f(x) has a local maximum or minimum at x = a if f '(a h) and f '(a + h) are of opposite signs.
If f '(a h) > 0 and f '(a + h) < 0 then x = a will be a point of local maximum
If f '(a h) < 0 and f '(a + h) > 0 then x = a will be a point of local minimum

Case II. When f(x) is continuous and f '(a h) and f '(a + h) exist but one of them is zero, we should infer the information about the existence of local maxima / minima from the basic definition of local maxima / minima.

Case III. If f(x) is not continuous at x = a and f '(a h) and / or f '(a + h) are not finite, then compare the values of f(x) at the neighbouring point of x = a.
Remarks: It is advisable to draw the graph of the function in the vicinity of the point x = a becasue the graph would give us the clear cicture about the existence of local maxima / minima at x = a.
Global Maximum/Minimum
Let y = f (x) be a given function with domain D. Let [a, b] D. Global maximum/minimum of f(x) in [a, b] is basically the greatest/least value of f(x) in [a, b].
Global maximum and minimum in [a, b] would always occur at critical points of f(x) within [a, b] or at the end points of the interval.
Global Maximum/Minimum in [a, b]
In order to find the global maximum and minimum of f(x) in [a, b], find out all the critical points of f(x) in (a, b). Let c₁, c₂, ....... c_n be the different cricitial points. Find the value of the function at these critical points. Let f(c₁), f(c₂), ....... f(c_n) be the values of the function at critical points.
Say, M₁ = max{f(a), f(c₁), f(c₂), ..........., f(c_n), f(b)}
and M₂ = min{f(a), f(c₁), f(c₂), ..........., f(c_n), f(b)}
Then M₁ is the greatest value of f(x) in [a, b] and M₂ is the least value of f(x) in [a, t]
Global Maximum/Minimum in (a, b)
Method for obtaining the greatest and least values of f(x) in (a, b) is almost same as the method used for obtaining the greatest and least values in [a, b], however with a caution.
Let y = f(x) be a function and c₁, c₂, ....... c_n be the different critical points of the function in (a, b)
Let M₁ = max {f(c₁), f(c₂), f(c₃) ........... f(c_n)}
and M₂ = min {f(c₁), f(c₂), f(c₃) ........... f(c_n)}
Now if would not have global maximum (or global minimum) in (a, b)
This means that if the limiting values at the end points are greater than M₁ or less than M₂, then f(x) would not have global maximum/minimum in (a, b). On the other hand if M₁ > , then M₁ and M₂ would respectively be the global maximum and global minimum of f(x) in (a, b).

Rolle's Theorem
It is one of the most fundamental theorem of differential calculus and has far reaching consequences. It states that if y = f(x) be a given function and satisfies.
. f(x) is continuous in [a, b]
. f(x) is differentiable in (a, b)
. f(a) = f(b)
Then f '(x) = 0 at least once for some x (a, b)

If f(x) satisfies the conditions of Rolle's theorem in [a, b], it's derivative would vanish at least once in (a, b).
A (a, f(a)), B (b, f(b))
as f(a) = f(b) (third condition of Rolle's theorem)
Slope of line AB = 0
We would have at least one point belonging to (a, b) so that tangent drawn to the curve at that point would be parallel to the line AB.

Illustration: Let f(x) = x²3x + 4. Test for Rolle's Theorem in [1, 2]
Sol. As f(1) = f(2) = 2
Now, f '(x) = 0 2x- 3 = 0
x = x (1, 2)

Lagrange's Mean Value Theorem
This theorem is in fact the general version of Rolle's theorem. It says that if y = f(x) be a given function which is

Application of Derivative in Determining the Nature of Roots of Cubic Polynomial
Let f(x) = x³ + ax² + bx + c be the given cubic polynomial, and f(x) = 0 be the corresponding cubic equation, where a, b, c R.
Now, f '(x) = 3x² + 2ax + b
Let D = 4a² 12b = 4(a² 3b) be the discriminant of the equation f '(x) = 0
(i) If D < 0 f '(x) > 0 x R. That means f(x) would be an increasing function of x. Also f() = , thus the graph of f(x) would look like,

It is clear that graph of y = f(x) would cut the x-axis only once. That means we would have just one real root, (say x₀). Clearly x₀ > 0 if c > 0.
(ii) If D > 0, f '(x) = 0 would have two real roots (say x₁ and x₂, let x₁ < x₂)
f '(x) = 3 (x x₁) (x x₂)
Sign of f '(x)

Clearly, f '(x) < 0, x (x₁, x₂) and f '(x) > 0, x ( , x₁) – (x₂, )
That means f(x) would increase in ( , x₁) and (x₂, ) and would decrease in (x₁, x₂). Hence x = x₁ would be a point of local maxima and x = x₂ would be a point of local minima.

Thus the graph of y = f(x) could have these five possibilities:

Clearly in fig. (a) we have three real and distinct roots. In figure (b) and (c) we have just one real root and in figures (d) and (e) we have 3 real roots but one of them would be repeated.

. If f(x₁) f(x₂) < 0, f(x) = 0 would have three real and distinct roots.

(iii) If D = 0, f '(x) = 3 (x x₁)² where x₁ is the root of f '(x) = 0
f(x) = (x x₁)³ + k
Now if k = 0, then f(x) = 0 has three equal real roots and if k¹ 0 then f(x) = 0 has one real root.

Illustration: Find all possible values of the parameter `a' so that x³ 3x + a = 0 has three real and distinct roots.
Sol. Let f(x) = x³ 3x + a
f '(x) = 3x² 3
= 3(x 1) (x + 1)
Clearly x = 1 is the point of maxima and x = 1 is the point of minima.
Now, f(1) = a 2, f( 1) = a + 2

The roots of f(x) = 0 would be real and distinct if
f(1) f( 1) < 0
(a 2) (a + 2) < 0
2 < a < 2
Thus given equation would have real and distinct roots if a ( 2, 2)

Tangent & Normals
Let y = f(x) be a continous function defined over an interval I
1. The slope of the tangent to the curve y = f(x) at the point is and is denoted by m
2. The slope of the tangent to the curve at a point is called the gradient to the curve at that point.
3. Equation of the tangent to the curve y = f(x) at is y - y₁ = m (x - x₁)
4. If m = 0 then the tangent at that point is parallel to x -axis.
5. If m is not defined then the tangent is perpendicular to x-axis
6. A line which is perpendicular to the tangent of the curve at P and passes through P is called the normal to the curve at P.

Angle of intersection of two plane curves:
1. The angle between two curves is defined as the angle between the two tangents at their common point of intersection.

About Special class Railway apprentice Exam

The Government of India may at their discretion alter or modify the periods and
courses of training.
2. The practical and theoretical training referred to above will be given in a Railway
Workshop for four years of their apprenticeship. Special Class Railway Apprentice
must pass within this period the Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering
from from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (Ranchi). The apprentices will be granted
a stipend of Rs. 9100/- per month during the 1st and 2nd years and Rs. 9400/- per
month during the 3rd year and first six months of 4th year and Rs 9700 for last six
months of 4th year. During the apprenticeship, the candidates will be required to
undergo both theoretical and practical training. There will be in all Eight Semester
Examinations passing each of which is compulsory. If unsuccessful at any of these
examination, they will be depending on their performance, be asked to sit for and pass
in supplementary examination or reverted to the next lower batch or removed from
apprenticeship.
Note : Except as provided for in paragraph 4 below or in cases of discharge or dismissal
due to insubordination, intemperance or other misconduct or breach of agreement a
week’s notice of discharge from apprenticeship will be given.
3. After the completion of 4th year of training referred to in paragraph 2 above, the
apprentices will be listed in order of merit on the results of the examination held and the
reports of the apprentices received during the period of apprenticeship. Successful
apprentices will be appointed on probation for 18 months in the Indian Railway Service
of Mechanical Engineers.
Note : An apprentice will be considered to have obtained the qualifying standard if he/
she obtains a minimum of 40 per cent marks in the aggregate in all the examinations
held during the Eight Semester Examination of his/her training and 60 percent marks
in the reports of the Director Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical
Engineers, Jamalpur and of the Chief Works Manager, Jamalpur Workshop provided
that in each of the Eight Semester Examination he/she has obtained a minimum of 40
percent marks in the aggregate and minimum of 40 percent marks in all the subjects.
4. Unsuccessful apprentices will be discharged from their apprenticeship, one month’s
notice of discharge being given along with the intimation that the apprentice has been
unsuccessful.
5. After successful completion of 4 years apprenticeship, the apprentices will be
appointed as probationers in the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers
subject to the proviso given below in Para 6. Particulars as to pay and general conditions
of service of officers of Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers have been
given in Appendix-IV of the Rules published in Gazette of India.
6. The period of probation will be 18 months. The appointment and pay as probationers
will commence from (a) the date of completion of 4 years of the apprenticeship or (b)
the actual date of completion of training whichever is later :
Provided however, that those Special Class Apprentices who could not pass Bachelor
of Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (Ranchi) within 4 years of their
apprenticeship will be deemed to have been appointed as probationers only from the
date when they pass in full in all the Eight Semester.
Note : (i) The retention in service of probationers and their grant of annual increments
are subject to satisfactory reports on their work being received at the end of each year
of probation.
(ii) The services of probationer may be terminated on three months notice on either
side.

The Special Class Railway Apprentice (SCRA) scheme was started in 1927 by the British, to select a handful of most intelligent Indians to assist them in their Railway Operations, after training at their Railway's largest workshop, i.e. Jamalpur Workshop, and for one year in United Kingdom. The selected candidates were required to appear in the Mechanical Engineering Degree Exmination held by Engineering Council (London).

Since then, the few SCRA admission seats for one of the country's first engineering college have always been hotly contested, with as many as 1 to 1.5 lakh candidates taking the entrance examination, now Special Class Railway Apprentice (SCRA) conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) board, for about 10 seats.That translates into an astonishing ratio of 1 selection per 10,000 applicants . Minimum Educational Qualification:

For admission to the examination a candidate-

(a.) Must have passed in the first or second division, the Intermediate or an equivalent Examination of a University or Board approved by the Government of India with Mathematics and at least one of the subjects Physics and Chemistry as subjects of the examination.

Scra Preperation is not any different from any other competative exams like IIT or AIEEE

3.Is SCRA a very tough exam?

SCRA and IIT-JEE are two different exams. The standard depends on your level of preparation. But yes SCRA is not easy to Qualify, needs a Lot of preparation. The syllabus for SCRA Contains physics, chemistry and maths (12-cbse Equivalent), general knowledge,general science and english.
SCRA a exam nothing is tough all you need is to do hard work with regular studies,however this exam really have a good level as compare to others

4.SCRA Entrance Pattern?

The SCRA entrance pattern in entrance examination comprises written test in
Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English Language, General Knowledge, and
Psychological Test (Mental Ability). The selected candidates are called for an interview,
which is followed by a medical examination. The standard of syllabus is that of Class XII
(CBSE equivalent)

5.What After successful completion of four years of training?

After successful completion of four years of training, the candidates join as Indian
Railway Services of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME) Officers in Indian Railways to face a
challanging and satisfying career
Degree Awarded: SCRAs get a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering
after successful completion of four years of training. This degree is recognised by the All
Council for Technical Education.

The selected candidates undergo a four-year rigorous training programme in Mechanical Engineering, for which the Institute has a Memorandum of Understanding with BIT, Mesra, Ranchi. The semester system of BIT, Mesra is followed, with workshop training sessions during the holidays at BIT, Mesra.
The apprentices get a stipend in the scale of Rs. 4000-4400 with Dearness Allowance,making the final emoluments upto Rs. 7400, apart from medical benefits, privelege passes and PTOs.

6.Biggest drawback ?

The biggest drawback of SCRA Exams is the limited number of seats. But it prepares students for something which no other exam can compete with.

There is no difference between SCRA and IES in terms of promotions and salaries, both are one and same- But in SCRA you get free engineering and stipend and a life of freedom while you are graduating itself- The difference is same as NDA and CDS - In government sector as you know promotions are time based - the more service you have to serve the more chances are that you go to the stop - so either it is SCRA or IES - it depends on the age you entering service? for SCRA service counts after four years you join i.e after completion of engineering

Tips to Crack SCRA Exam

•   You need to attain minimum qualifying scores in subject. Thus, focusing on one subject and ignoring the other may land you in a hot soup. So, divide your time among the subjects more equitably.
- Try conventional methods first.
-   If they don’t work out, try to understand the problem again and find clues that can lead you to solution.
- Go through the concepts related to the problem once again and see how they can be applied to the problem in hand.
- Try to relate the problem to real-life situations. It will help you to analyze it better.
   Consult the solution, only when you have exhausted your limits. See, what you had missed earlier.
-    Practice similar problems.
-    Devise your own shortcuts and ways to tackle particular kind of problems.

•   In SCRA EXAM, both speed and strike rate matter. You need to be quick and accurate to achieve high scores. High speed with less accuracy can actually ruin your results.

•   . Being adept in mental calculations can actually increase your speed to a great extent.

•   Once you are done with the questions you know well, apply the method of intelligent guessing and elimination for questions you are not sure about.
Since you only need to choose one of the four given options, your chances of choosing a correct answer is 25%.

•   If you eliminate one incorrect answer, your chances improve to 33%. If you are able to strike out one more option, your chances of choosing the correct answer will be as high as 50%.

•   do not resort to wild guesswork. It is better to leave the question you have no idea about, as you do not lose marks on questions you do not attempt.

Ultimately for preparation of any exam, remember some points:

1) Always start from BASICS because "without base, there will be no altitude" and "journey of a thousand miles begin with single step".

2) Always BUILD UP RIGHT & APPROPRIATE BASICS because "once the track of train is being changed, it will go on only that track". So always select the right track.

3) Never prefer solutions of questions before doing SELF-ATTEMPT at least five times till you get the right answer because "without fall you cannot stand at once".

4) Never leave the question in between. And I saw a lot of students practicing this question without attempting it whole, and it's a very big fault for students and even it becomes their negative point sometimes. So please ignore this thing. Because "many of life's failure are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up"

5) Always try a question with CONCEPTUAL APPROACH, not just read the question then start doing without getting the point that what question is saying.

6) Your study schedule should be such that you will even easily get the time for a little enjoyment daily.

7) Most important thing is that you should be having a time schedule as well as REGULARITY in study.

8) Also you will have to take appropriate sleep or rest of at least 6 hours a day if you are preparing for SCRA ,IIT-JEE Aieee otherwise your mind set-up for next day will not be in place.

9) Never cram the things, always TRY TO UNDERSTAND the problem or theory.

10) And BE CONFIDENT while you are preparing. NEVER LOSE CONFIDENCE.

11) Always keep contact with intelligent students of your class or at coaching centre.

12) Think positive
13) Always be AHEAD in exams like-OLYMPIAD, UNIFIED COUNCIL etc. Etc. (for more information-contact me)

14) Always keep the copy of latest syllabus for particular exam. Always check the syllabus before starting a new topic.

16) I have a positive point i.e. once I set a goal, then I don't look at anything else, I just KEEP DETERMINATION in me until or unless I ACHIEVE THAT GOAL.

17) Whenever you complete any chapter or particular topic, first of all, go through that topic from NCERT. (It's very important).

18) There is one more thing, whenever you are studying just be CONCENTRATE on that thing so badly, so that you even don't know what is happening your nearby. Because studying 2 hours with DAMN GOOD CONCENTRATION is equals to studying 5-12 hours without any concentration.

19) Always study anything with GREAT INTEREST otherwise it will be of NO USE.

20) Even there are some students who think that they can nod prepare for IIT-JEE like EXAMS. So if they think so, then they are wrong. Because "ATTITUDE, NOT APTITUDE DETERMINES ALTITUDE".

Kharif and Rabi Crops
Kharif Crops: raised in autumn in June-July. These are cotton, rice, maize and millets.
Rabi Crops: are winter crops in October and November and reaped in April. These are wheat, gram, linseed and mustard.

Favourable climate and soil conditions
Wheat: Its plant requires a cool climate in the beginning, warm and dry weather at the time of harvesting and rainfall at intervals—between 20’’ to 30’’. A clayey soil is very favourable.
Barley: cool climate and a soil poorer than that required for wheat.
Rice: hot and moist climate with rainfall from 40’’ to 80’’ or over and rich soil. The plant is required to remain under water for several days in the beginning. A marshy soil is very suitable.
Sugarcane: an evenly high temperature with sufficient rainfall—about 40’’. It needs a fertile soil, having lime and salt in it.
Tobacco: hot and moist climate; rich soil.
Spices: (pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, nutmegs) hot, moist and even climate.
Opium: It requires hot and moist climate with a rich soil.
Maize: warm and moist (but not very moist) climate.
Cotton: It requires warm, moist and even climate where summer is long and where the soil contains salt. Sea-breeze is beneficial for quality of the fibre. The ideal situation for plantation is lowlands near the sea coast or on islands in semi-tropical latitudes.
Jute: It requires a high temperature with a minimum of about 80°F during the period of growth. It also needs rich sandy soil, sufficient rainfall well distributed over the period of growth, ample supply of water for soaking of plants and for washing the stripped fibre. It also needs suitable and sufficient labour to handle the crop at the proper time.
Rubber: The plantation of rubber trees is better adapted to areas where the climate is warm and humid.
Tea: (Tea is dried leaves of an evergreen shrub). It requires warm and moist climate. It is grown on mountain slopes. At least 60’’ annual rainfall in showers is needed for the new leaves to sprout. If water is allowed to stay, the roots are destroyed. So mountain slopes on which water does not accumulate are necessary. Soil containing iron is an additional advantage.
Coffee: requires warm and moist climate and a height between 457 metres and 762 metres—rainfall above 60’’. The plant cannot stand extreme cold. When young, the plant is required to be protected from strong sunshine.
Millets: (Jawar and Bajra) require a hot and sufficiently dry climate and poor soil.
Groundnuts: require a hot climate and moderate rainfall 29’’ to 40’’. Soil should be light and sandy.
Oilseeds: require hot and moist climate and a rich soil.

Fertilizers
Fertilizers normally contain three main ingredients namely nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
Nitrogen: imports a healthy green colour to the leaves.
Phosphorus: hastens leaf development and promotes root growth.
Potassium: plays an essential part in the formation of starch.

Mineral Resources of India
India possesses huge mineral wealth but it is not much exploited. Coal, gold, mica, building materials, salt, petroleum, manganese ore, iron ore, copper ore and ilmenite are produced in quantities to be of real importance to industry and other sectors of economy. Out of these, mica, manganese ore and ilmenite are largely exported. India has, however, adequate resources of industrial clay, steatite, bauxite, chromite, titanium ore etc.

Cement: Katni in M.P., Lakheri in Rajasthan, Jabalpur (M.P.), Guntur (Andhra Pradesh), Jhinkapani (Singhbhum district of Jharkhand), Surajpur (Haryana).
China Clay: Rajmahal Hills, Singhbhum district of Bihar, Kerala.
Chromite: Singhbhum and Bhagalpur (Jharkhand); Ratnagiri, Salem (Tamil Nadu); Karnataka; Keonjhar (Orissa); Ladakh (Kashmir).
Coal: Raniganj (West Bengal); Jharia, Giridih, Karanpur (Bihar); Bokaro, (Jharkhand) Panch Valley and Chanda (M.P.); Singareni (Andhra Pradesh) and Mukum (Assam).

Heavy Water: Talchar in Orissa; Kota in Rajasthan; Baroda in Gujarat; Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu; Nangal in Punjab.
Ilmenite: Kerala. Occurs in the “Bank Sands” of the beaches near Quilon.
Iron Ore: Singhbhum (Jharkhand), Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj (Orissa).
Kaynite: largest deposits occur at Kharswan near Jamshedpur, Singhbhum (Bihar).
Lac: W. Bengal.
Lead: Zawar in Udaipur and at the Banjavi mines in Jaipur (Rajasthan).

Monazite Sands: are found in abundance in Travancore coast (Kerala State). Thorium is processed from Monazite sands.
Nitre: Bihar, U.P., Tamil Nadu and Punjab.
Petroleum: Digboi, Badarpur, Musimpur and Patharia fields of Assam, Cambay basin near Baroda where oilfields have been discovered and production has started. Large-scale drilling for oil is in progress in India in Bombay and Gujarat.
Pitchblende: Gaya (Bihar).
Red Stone: Jodhpur (Rajasthan).
Salt: Sambhar Lake (Rajasthan), and is also obtained from ocean water of Ranns of Kutch, on the north-western and south-eastern littoral (sea-shore) of India.
Saltpetre: Punjab, U.P. and Bihar.
Silmanite: Khasi Hills (Assam); Rewa (M.P.). Silmanite is used in the manufacture of furnace-lining in iron and steel industry. It is also used in glass and ceramic industry.
Silver: Karnataka; Singhbhum and Manbhum (Jharkhand); Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan.
Steatite: Guntur (Andhra Pradesh), Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, U.P., Karnataka and Rajasthan.
