At first glance, this photo may appear less than awesome... but pictures do not always tell the full story. The sun came out the second I got in the water and the surface turned to glass. Spent the remainder of the day sliding thru the final sunset of 2011.

2011 Surf Retrospective

It was tough to pick just one from each month, so I cheated a little on a few. 2012 brings continued hope for an elevated collective conscience regarding the state of our oceans and the creatures who share it with us. More fun sessions and adventures remain on the wishlist as well. May 2012 bring you all you desire.

January: Blizzard bros

February: I spent most of the month in Puerto Rico. This was a totally new thing for me. When I got there and realized there was a sweet little community complete with a rockin surfrider chapter, and surf everyday, I fell a little in love. Before I knew it I was back in the winter rubber.

March: incoming!

April: Had the honor of making the banner for the MA Surfrider Chapter May Fundraiser at Flatbread. Put loads of love into it. Scored some, too.

May: The Rapture Sessions. The world didn't end but may as well surf as if it was.
+++

June: Obligatory rainbow shot. This was at International Surfing Day and there were actually fun waves that morning. I helped at the beach cleanup later in the day and at the end, we were treated to this rainbow.

July: Creative sessioning. Caught a summer evening moon session followed by suprisingly good surf the next morning.

August: Got the old cow fitted up with a surfboard rack. Another day, another dream come true. Some spots are easier to access by bike!

September: Before Irene, Katia, Maria and Ophelia, there was this magical day in early September. Shot with the Holga 120 CFN.

October: Crazy pre-halloween nor'easter and beautiful dawn patrol halloween morning.

November: Thanksgiving swell.

December: We end where we started... or rather - where we were just a few mornings ago. Waiting for first light.

Solstice Session | Winter 2011

Winter solstice surf in 2010 and in 2009 were polar opposite to this year's - complete with snow, a good little swell, and chilly temps. In contrast, today was warm and sunny with clean lil longboard waves. My hood was off before sunrise. Though the waves were small, I still had a hard time leaving. Always want to stay.

Love Grows

I knew being a surfer puts you in a special category and that being a surfer in New England puts you in an even more special subcategory but I had no idea just how special. Words do not fail me too often but this week they have been a little harder to find. Where does the love go when someone leaves this life who was sooo loved by so many? I found out the answer on Saturday. It doesn't go anywhere - rather, it grows.

Remembering Ralph

I remember the first day I met Ralph and his wife Kristen up at Long Sands on that dreamy, sunny afternoon. Long-time best buddy to my equally goofy friend, Lance, Ralph had an awesome sense of humor and epitomized that kid-like, fun, eternally stoked side of surfing that so many seem to lose as time goes by. There was that immediate connection that you just feel with certain people. He was generous... sharing waves with me at his home break – and it was always a treat when we got to surf together. From the day we met, I felt comfortable shooting him a quick message to let him know I would be heading up north to poach a few of his precious waves – always in hopes that he may be getting ready for a session, too.

I still can't believe the news. My heart is broken. Rest in peace, Ralphie.
