The Russell Library for Political Research and Studies invites former members of the Athens League of Women Voters and other interested persons to join us for a continental breakfast, remarks from former ALWV president Heidi Davison, and a display of artifacts, photographs, and documents from the collection.

Known for their slogan, “the key to good government is citizenship participation” the League of Women Voters documented the activities of its members from 1948 until 2006, creating a record of the grassroots experience and engagement of Athens women involved in political life for more than fifty years.

The University of Georgia’s new Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries gets a star turn in the episode, as the scene for much of the filming. Documents at the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library were used in tracing Deen’s heritage, the focus of the series. Filming took place at several sites around Georgia, including Savannah.

The show follows celebrities “as they embark on personal journeys of self-discovery to trace their family trees.”

“During each episode, one of the celebrities is taken on a surprising and deeply emotional quest into his or her family history, resulting in a compelling reality format. Each week, viewers follow some of America’s best-known celebrities into their ancestral pasts, as they uncover stories of heroism and tragedy, love and betrayal, secrets and intrigue that lie at the heart of their family history,” according to the producers.

“At the same time, ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ celebrates the twists and turns of a great nation and the people who made their way here in search of freedom and opportunity. As each celebrity discovers his or her unknown relatives – most of whom overcame hard times, the show will take viewers back through world history to expose how the lives of everyone’s collective ancestors have shaped our world today,” promotional material said.

The Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries was dedicated in February and houses the university’s three special collections: the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library; the Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Award Collection; and the Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies. The 115,000-square-foot structure includes a mammoth underground vault to aid in security and climate control as protection for some of the most valuable artifacts of Georgia’s cultural heritage.

Filming of the “Who Do You Think You Are?” program in both in Athens and Savannah incorporated original historical documents held by UGA’s Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library.

Deen’s cookbooks have sold more than 8 million copies, and her bimonthly magazine has a circulation of more than 1 million. She has won a daytime Emmy award for Outstanding Lifestyle Host for “Paula’s Home Cooking” and has been nominated twice more for “Paula’s Best Dishes.”

Her restaurant breakthrough came with The Lady & Sons in Savannah, which she operates with her sons, Jamie and Bobby Deen. Paula Deen Enterprises includes a full line of cookware and dishes, assorted food products, sauces, spices and bakery goods. Emmy Award-winning actress Lisa Kudrow is executive producer of the NBC series.

The Constitution will be displayed from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the second floor gallery space of the Russell Building.

Civil War letters, documents, artifacts and images from 1862 will also be displayed in observance of Confederate Memorial Day.

Under Lieve, Glamour has received a record number of National Magazine Awards, including the top honor, Magazine of the Year. Lieve is also the women’s lifestyle contributor for NBC’s Today show, where she frequently discusses women’s issues ranging from fashion to politics.

The Mingledorff-Lorimer Lecture in Print Media was created by Huldah Mingledorff. Her father-in-law, George Horace Lorimer, was editor of The Saturday Evening Post from 1899-1937.

We were saddened to learn of the passing of UGA alum and Athens resident Fred Birchmore (’32, ’34) today. The Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library holds Mr. Birchmore’s papers chronicling his trip around the world in 1934 and 1935 via his bicycle Bucephalus, named for Alexander the Great’s horse, and now owned by the Smithsonian Institution.

Amanda French, THATCamp (The Humanities And Technology Camp) coordinator at the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, will speak on “The History and Future of Academic Conferences” at the University of Georgia March 9, prior to THATCamp Southeast, which is to be held at the Miller Learning Center on March 10th and 11th.

“I consider myself a member of the community of practice known as the ‘digital humanities,’ which means that I think hard about how the study of literature, history, and philosophy has been and is being and might be changed by computers and the Internet — but I don’t limit myself to thinking; I get my hands dirty, thus causing some of the very change I think about, in an inexcusable breach of objectivity,” French said.

Prior to joining George Mason, French was an assistant research scholar in the Archives and Public History program at New York University, where she helped develop a model digital curriculum, and developed and taught the graduate course “Creating Digital History.”

The UGA Libraries’ Professional Development and Research Committee is sponsoring the event, using funds from the W. Porter Kellam Library Enrichment Fund. All are welcome.

2011 found the Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection in a state of transition as we undertook the massive project of  barcoding all of its physical assets for transfer to a new, state-of-the-art storage vault located below the Special Collections Building’s main floors. As a result of these efforts, we are poised to provide unprecedented access to materials not previously available to the campus and research community at-large.

As we continue moving and unpacking in early-2012, we would like to welcome visitors to our newly-designed web site, and invite them to explore the expanded content offerings found there. As well, we have established a YouTube channel on which can be found footage from a wide variety of our collection inventory for your enjoyment.

We look forward to continued service of  the University of Georgia, the people of the state of Georgia, and the community worldwide by maintaining the highest standards of excellence in the curation of this valuable collection of media assets.

As a result of the move, the Historical Manuscripts and University Archives collections will be unavailable for public use for a period of approximately 6-8 weeks effective 5:00pm October 21, 2011.

The Rare Books collection will remain open until approximately November 1, 2011, when it also will close temporarily for relocation.

The Georgiana collection will remain open until approximately November 18, 2011, when it will close temporarily for relocation.

To reduce the impact of the special collections move on researchers, the Libraries will partially open the Special Collections Libraries building in the late fall to provide prearranged access to materials once they have arrived at their new home.

The Special Collections Libraries building plans to open fully to the public with normal service in January 2012.

Saturday closings: Hargrett has ceased Saturday hours October – December due to the move.

Until September 6, 2011, visitors to the Russell Library should use the main entrance of the Main Library building and alert the representatives at the security desk that they need to have access to the Russell Library. Once the move begins on September 6, the Russell Library will close for all research until early November.

After the move concludes, the Russell will reopen for research in the new Special Collections Building located at 300 Hull St. (behind the Holiday Inn on Broad St.)

Research access during this transitional time (late fall) will be limited. To use Russell Library collections during this period, researchers should make advance arrangements for access by contacting Jill Severn at jsevern@uga.edu

The Special Collections Libraries Building will reopen to the public with normal service in January 2012.

Andrew Young Presents: How We Got Over was recognized for technical achievement, one of three Emmys it received. The documentary is largely based historical news footage made available through the Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection. It aired on Georgia Public Television as part of the Andrew Young Presents series.
Young and Producer CB (sic) Hackworth were recognized, along with UGA Libraries employees Toby Graham, deputy university librarian; Ruta Abolins, director of the media archives; Margie Compton and James Benyshek of the archives; Craig Breaden of the Russell Library for Political Research and Studies; Barbara McCaskill, UGA English professor, in addition to student employees and other members of the production team.

“As the producer CB Hackworth said to me, it was all about honoring the technical achievement of the Civil Rights Digital Library and in particular the WSB and WALB newsfilm preserved and represented in the project, as well as the Freedom on Film website and the Highlander Folk School website,” Abolins said, adding that, after accepting the award, Young told her it belongs at the UGA Libraries.

The raw news footage, from WSB in Atlanta and WALB in Albany, form the centerpiece of the Civil Rights Digital Library.

“The Civil Rights Digital Library (CRDL) initiative is the most ambitious and comprehensive effort to date to deliver educational content on the Civil Rights Movement via the Web,” said P. Toby Graham, also director of the Digital Library of Georgia, based at the UGA Libraries. “It is national in scope and there really is nothing else like it.”

Held by the Libraries’ media archives, the moving images—about 450 clips–cover a broad range of key civil rights events.

“The video archive covers both national figures and local leaders,” Abolins said. “There is more than two hours of film related to Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King’s role in the Albany Movement is documented extensively, including clips of speeches at mass meetings, his arrest by local police, press conferences, and his visit to a pool hall to urge local African Americans to adopt non-violence in achieving change in Albany.”

“We never expected our archival work to be honored, so this award is very special to us. The award will go into the new special collections building when it is completed in September 2011,” Abolins said.

The library also subscribes to the Ancestry Library Edition (on campus access only), a version of ancestry.com.  This searchable database includes census records (1790-1930), military records, the social security death index, emigration records, and many other collections of information.

The Heritage Room at the Athens-Clarke County Library on Baxter Street is another excellent local resource for history and genealogy.  They regularly have free  information sessions and special programs about doing genealogical research; see the program schedule for dates and times.

The Peabody Awards Collection, part of the UGA Libraries Walter J. Brown Media Archives, is one of the largest broadcasting archives in the country.  The Collection contains all entries to the George Foster Peabody Awards, with radio programs dating from 1940 and television from 1948, making it an invaluable resource for teaching and research.

Thanks to a grant from Save America’s Treasures at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Media Archives is now able to preserve, digitize, and share part of the Collection online.  The titles selected for this project are all locally-produced television programs dating from 1973-1989.  Currently over 500 titles are available, with more being added daily.

Among the programs currently on view: local kids’ shows like Hobo Kelly’s Marineland Special from KHJ in Hollywood (1974) and Jack and the Jukebox from WWBT in Richmond, Va. (1978).  Local news stories like Angola: Behind Closed Doors From WWL in New Orleans (1977) and Bid Rigging at Boston City Hall from WCVB in Needham, Mass. (1978), not seen since their original broadcasts, are now available.
