Happy Birthday – 23 & Still Going Strong!

Yesterday, Spectacular Events celebrated its 23^rd birthday. For twenty-three years now, we have delivered travel and event services like no other, and have really made our mark in the corporate, group and event travel space, not only in our home town on the Sunshine Coast, but internationally and domestically.

We’ve delivered conferences and corporate events globally, in every continent except the Antarctica, and throughout every state in Australia. We’ve also hosted and delivered group travel movements to each one of these regions and countries too. For twenty-three years, we have lived, breathed, delivered and curated thousands of events and tours, and working in the corporate space is what we do best.

Spectacular Events Pty Ltd and Spectacular World Travel have been in operation, with the same owner/manager, Zoë Sparks, for the duration of our existence since 1998. In recent years, we’ve also expanded in areas that complement our offering to enhance the services and products we deliver, all with the aim of delivering a TOTAL solution to our clients.

Four years ago, we set up eventtravel.com.au, an entity that delivers travel packages, events and itineraries that sit behind major events, primarily on the Sunshine Coast, but also throughout Australia. Three and a half years ago, we set up the extremely successful and thriving SHINE Business Women. Our primary focus in this space is to offer professional and personal development opportunities to women in business through events, an annual conference and annual retreat. This has also evolved organically into a membership program, published books showcasing women in business and a podcast, and is something of which we are extremely proud.

Our latest venture, SunSHINE Boxes, was launched in September last year and delivers boxes filled with Sunshine Coast produce, products and delights to corporate, homes, events and holiday accommodations. We hand deliver on the Sunshine Coast and also mail Australia wide. This has been a huge hit with our local businesses and charities in particular. All of our offerings blend together to offer a full client experience and a true, full event solution.

It would be remiss of me to not say a HUGE thank you to all of our clients, supporters, fans, suppliers and providers, and most importantly our staff (present and past) for your outstanding contribution, faith and loyalty which has kept us thriving, even in recent times which have often been challenging. We simply could not do what we do without you all, and I am truly grateful – especially as many of you are now friends.

So what’s next?

Our 2022 is already shaping up to be BIG in the conference and exhibition space. And our next few months are filled with group movements and events too, so it is exciting times ahead. We’re also finalising the details for our SHINE Business Women conference. This year’s theme is Step Up and it will be held on 22^nd October 2021, on the Sunshine Coast so make sure you save the date as this is always popular!

Spectacular Scottish Highlands

When planning my recent trip back to the UK, my friend and I decided to include a ‘Yoga & Walking Retreat’ in the Scottish Highlands, which was being delivered by a good friend, Kirsty Innes.

The chance to escape and experience a few days in the magical Scottish Highlands was too good an opportunity to miss, and the dates fitted perfectly into my already planned itinerary.

The journey from Edinburgh to Spean Bridge (which is where we were headed) is worthy of mention as this drive was amazing – scenery unlike any other, stunning mountains, enormous lochs and a wilderness that is just as picturesque as Canada and others areas that are renowned for their beauty.

We did take the slightly longer route so that we could drive alongside Loch Lomond through the Trossachs National Park, and we were pleased that we did. Further along from Loch Lomond, the countryside changed dramatically as we drove through Glencoe and the ski field areas close to Ben Nevis (Scotland’s highest mountain), and touching through Fort William.

Our final strop was the Commando Memorial near to Spean Bridge which is a ‘must stop’, not only to see the memorial but also to take in the spectacular, rolling views of the Ben Nevis mountain range.

Our yoga sessions were held in the Clan Cameron Community Hall in Achnacarry, and our walks were in the surrounding area, through the woods, along the River Arkaig, and finishing at what is left of the Achnacarry Castle.

Our guide, Graeme, who is also the owner of Smokey Oak Lodge (which is where we were staying), shared tales of the local folklore and we were taken back in time to learn all about the Highlanders, the Jakobites and local Clan history. Graeme’s stories were captivating and without a doubt, an important part of the whole experience. He was a professional tour guide before renovating Smokey Oak Lodge, and we could tell! He also treated us to a trek into the woods in search of the ‘White Witch’.

Smokey Oak Lodge is basic style accommodation, but comfortable, well appointed and located right on the River. It’s got everything that you need and is in a beautiful location… the perfect place to unwind.

I knew that the yoga would be terrific, as I’ve been to some of Kirsty’s sessions here in Australia, and it was exactly what the Doctor ordered. Restorative yoga at its best, and four amazing sessions that were relaxing, restorative and the perfect activity to complement our Highland walks. We were also treated to delicious home cooked food, hot chocolate and marshmallows by an outdoor fire by the loch and a weekend of relaxation and a true ‘back to nature’ experience.

Jaw Dropping Jasper

This is the last in my series of Canada blogs, as Jasper was our last port of call before driving through to Edmonton and then flying back to Australia. The drive from Lake Louise to Jasper was just over three hours, through magnificent terrain along the Icefields Parkway, which is the main highway that starts in Banff. We were lucky in that it had opened up a couple of weeks before we wavered across, as it remains closed in many sections during the winter months. It’s a spectacular drive, mountainous, rugged National Park terrain that is stunningly beautiful.

Jasper itself is an old style railway town; the railway runs straight through the middle of the little township and I have to admit, the town was much smaller than we expected, but still home to a number of restaurants, cafes (the bakeries are fantastic), shops and lots of hotels. The scenery and wildlife are the main draw-card that attracts people to Jasper, as it is set in an amazing National Park that is home to elk, moose, bears, deer and many other animals. It was a thrill to see the elk roaming through town, as we had no idea they would venture so close to civilisation.

We were out of season to see the breathtaking Northern Lights in the sky, but the Planetarium is well known and people can see the evening stars, constellations and learn all about the Milky Way, solar system and Northern Lights.

The Jasper National Park is home to Medicine Lake, Sunwapter Falls, Spirit Island, Maligne Canyon, Athabasca River and Falls, the Miette Hot Springs and Mount Robson, so there is much to see and take in and lots to keep you occupied, especially if you are into nature, wildlife and spectacular scenery. The area is fantastic for hiking, bike rides and most can be easily accessed by car which is great.

The Jasper Brewing Company is a great place to eat and is a modern brewery offering house made craft beers and pub food. We also had a great meal in our hotel restaurant at the Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre. Buffalo meat is very popular in Jasper and its used to make nachos, spaghetti bolognaise and lots of meals we would usually make with beef mince.

The Sawridge Inn and Conference Center was the perfect place to stay; lovely rooms and great facilities. We spent two nights here so we could go wildlife spotting and we weren’t disappointed.

After Jasper, we travelled to Edmonton and it is worth mentioning the West Edmonton Mall which is the largest mall in North America, and must be a place you stop in and visit if you ever get the chance. We were completely blown away by the sheer size, as this shopping mecca is also home to World Waterpark, Galaxyland, an Ice Palace skating rink, bowling alley, adventure golf, casino, hotel, Imax 3D theatre, nightclub, wild west shooting centre and the list goes on. And that’s not to mention every type of shop and brand you could possibly think of – it would be remiss of me not to mention as this is a MUST STOP IT you do happen to be passing through. Prepare to be amazed!

So this blog tells a tale of the end of our Canada adventure and it was truly and amazing almost three weeks – Canada should be on everyone’s list for a visit. Canada is a real ‘bucket list’ adventure; the people are amazing, the activities diverse and varied with some real highlights that you cannot do in Australia, beautiful sights and country, great places to eat and drink, lots to do and even more to experience.

Cheers to 20 Years!

Today marks a MAJOR milestone for Spectacular Events & Spectacular World Travel… today we celebrate our 20th birthday! Woo hoo!!!

In 1998, I held the piece of paper in my hand that was my company certificate… I was aged 25 years old, ready to take on the world and initially we started out with me contracting to two or three companies to run their conference events. In less than two years, I had a travel centre in North Sydney which ran side by side to the conference work I was doing and following the birth of my first son, my husband and I relocated back to the Sunshine Coast to be close to my family and for me to still be able to run my business.

National World Travel Currimundi opened on 6th June 2000 at the Currimundi Marketplace (it’s now actually a Flight Centre!) and we started our journey, which evolved into two travel centres (with the addition of Travelworld Mooloolaba), a call centre in Cotton Tree that ran the CBA True Awards Flight Redemption program and serviced the travel for the PGA of Australia & Rock Eisteddfod Challenge. We also created an amazing team of people and we had a fantastic culture before that was even a buzz word!

Major highlights were being inducted into the Sunshine Coast Business Awards ‘Hall of Fame’ in 2005 (after winning 3 business awards), and also being recognised as the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Sunshine Coast Outstanding Business Woman of the Year in 2004 & a two-time Telstra Business Women’s Award Finalist.

We have constantly evolved and moved with the times, re-structuring a couple of times to meet market and client needs and to ensure we are at the forefront of everything we do.

We no longer have a retail travel centre (our last one was closed 6 years ago at the end of this month), but our company continues to thrive, grow and progress. For some time we have not been as ‘visual’ as we were in the early 2000’s, as most of our work is conducted for corporate businesses and franchise groups, so I guess ‘behind the scenes’ but we still work tirelessly in the local community, network and offer support and sponsorship when we are in a position to do so.o.

SHINE Business Women is our latest venture and OMG – this for me is our most exciting project to date and I cannot wait to roll out six conferences in the next 12 months and the membership program that will sit behind this business division. The support so far has been truly amazing and we are SO excited about this way forward.

BUT primarily we are still a travel, conference & event management company who specialises in delivering conferences and group travel, and this will NEVER change. It is our core business, our passion and what we love best… we’ve now just put our own spin on it with SHINE Business Women, to complement what we do for our clients.

Today is a day to CELEBRATE! Not many businesses survive the 5 or 10 year mark, so we are extremely proud to make it to 20 years… and for us, we still feel it’s only the beginning!

A massive THANK YOU to all the clients and people we work with, many of you have been with us for most of the 20 years and that’s also something to ‘shout out’ about! A massive THANK YOU to all staff, present and past, for sharing our dream and purpose, we would not be where we are today without you!

Luxurious Lake Louise

Right now, I am sitting in an armchair, feet up, looking out over the majestic Lake Louise. Everywhere is still snow covered, the lake is frozen and the glacier is also still frozen. There is a steady drip from the window outside, an icicle is melting and if I look down, I can see a sleigh ride ready to leave, skaters out on the lake skating rink and a couple of people hitting pucks on a mapped out ice-hockey field. It is truly a fairytale image, the sort you see in travel brochures or picture books.

We are so excited to be staying at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, and splurged to ensure we had a Lake View room, and it is worth every cent. For over twenty years I have sent clients to this magical place and every single one has raved that this was one of the highlights of their Canadian Rockie’s adventure, and as I gaze out of the window, I can more than understand why.

The Chateau Lake Louise may be a hotel, but it is also the main stop for all tourists coming to the area. It is a striking Castle-like hotel, exclusively positioned right on the lake and home to a number of restaurants and bars with stunning views of the lake, a health and fitness centre (offering pool, hot tub, steam room, yoga and fitness sessions as well as an impressive gym), luxury spa, and a variety of shops. It also has numerous activities available for all to enjoy such as sleigh rides, snow sports and adventures which include a popular ski mountain, campfire activities and kids activities too.

Lake Louise is secluded and a special little part of Canada that is a must stop if travelling through the Rockies. Outside of the winter months, take in the numerous and extensive hikes on offer, which suit all levels of experience. Most activities stem or commence from the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise as it has prime location to everything on offer. The Lake Louise village itself is tiny, the highlight being an Old Heritage Train Station Restaurant (although this is open seasonally).

The whole Canadian Rockies area has two distinct seasons, an extended Winter season of skiing and snow adventures (check out nearby Sunshine as well as Lake Louise), and a short Summer, which is actually when the tourists really flock in to enjoy the National Parks, lakes, forests and to try their hand at wildlife spotting. I must go now, a glass of wine is waiting for me to enjoy whilst savouring my view, but do make sure you treat yourself to a night of indulgence if you are venturing out to Lake Louise!

Bedazzling Banff

Over the years, I’ve sent lots of people to Banff and its surrounds to enjoy the Winter Skiing program in Canada and I felt quite familiar with it as a destination and understanding what to recommend to people, but I have to admit, I never had any great desire to visit personally, mainly because I’m not an avid skier. When we were planning out our visit to Canada, it seemed logical to take in the Rockies – Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper, but for me it was to see what all the fuss was about rather than spend time skiing, so it didn’t worry us that we would be there at the end of the snow season.

We flew from Vancouver to Calgary and were welcomed by icy temperatures of -12 degrees, which literally took our breath away, and after a tour of Stampede Park, headed out to Banff which was an hour and a half road trip. As we drove into Banff, our reaction was wow, wow and wow!

Banff is truly one of the most beautiful towns I’ve ever visited. Snow covered mountains surround this beautiful alpine town which looks as if it could have been picked up straight out of Europe and dropped in the Canadian Rockies. Banff may only be small, but we spent a lovely afternoon taking in frozen lakes and the absolutely stunning Fairmount Resort, before browsing the spectacular shops and walking through the gorgeous town.

The souvenir shops in Canada were just amazing full stop; filled with products of exceptional quality, so it’s easy to buy yourself lots of mementos that you’ll actually enjoy and use. Make sure you stop at Evolution in the heart of the town; a gourmet grocery store where you can sample amazing flavoured olive oils and aged balsamic vinegars that are truly to die for.

It’s hard not to buy everything in the shop, and you could spend hours sampling all of the delicious products and people often do. When you’re ready for a snack, sample the local beavertails (which are a flat, donut style treat with amazing toppings) as these are something that I wouldn’t say are amazing, but they are unique and great if you have a sweet tooth.

The absolute highlight of our whole trip to Canada was a day spent dog-sledding at nearby Canmore, and we were so fortunate to experience as they book out days/weeks ahead of travel. We were outside of the main season so didn’t experience too much trouble (although we did book before leaving Australia) but please make sure you do book as part of your package if you don’t want to be disappointed. It was definitely an experience of a lifetime, so were thrilled we were able to do.

Accommodation in Banff is all centrally located and runs as a line of hotels, motels and apartments on the main road into Banff. We stayed at the popular Delta Suites which were great and I can highly recommend, and the also popular Fox Suites was located next door. These properties are around a two minute drive into town or a ten minute walk if the roads/paths are not too icy.

We were treated to a blanket of snow as we ate dinner in Banff on our first night, so it is good to drive in as the weather changes so quickly. Banff is home to a number of restaurants, cafes and bars, as well as lively nightlife, so there is plenty to keep you occupied. It’s not hard to understand why Banff is Canada’s most popular Tourist spot, and it’s actually more popular in the Summer months than in Winter, so if you decide to do a road trip through Western Canada, make sure you allocate at least two or three nights to this picturesque town, no matter what time of year you are travelling.

Wonderful Whistler

Whistler is a Winter Wonderland and it’s no wonder that Australians flood there to ski, year in, and year out. This was my second trip to Whistler, and albeit brief, was even better the second time around.

One of the things I love about Whistler is that it is all so compact, and easy to get around. It’s also really easy to reach and access, with being only a couple of hours drive from Vancouver. It’s a lovely scenic drive through mountains and lakes, so hopefully you have a bright, sunny day as we did as it’s an enjoyable drive to do and will open up the beautiful scenery of Canada for you to experience.

Whistler is a skier’s paradise, as the lifts are accessed directly from the Village. There are several lifts, but the Whistler and Blackcomb lifts are the main ski lifts accessing the two main mountains. There is also a scenic lift between the two peaks, which takes in the beautiful scenery and valley below and is particularly spectacular to do on a clear day. There are slopes for all levels (200 marked runs, 37 lifts, 16 alpine bowls and 3 glaciers) and large cafe area, where you can enjoy a meal, see the famous Inuit man and also the colourful Olympic Rings.

Skiing isn’t the only snow sport on offer in Whistler; it’s also well-known for snowmobiling, heli-skiing and cat-skiing. In Summer, there are hikes and walks aplenty, taking in the lakes, waterfalls, mountains and parks. Whistler is also a great spot for mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, rafting and fishing.

Whistler village itself is gorgeous, home to lots of accommodation houses of all standards (hotels, motels and apartments), most of which can easily access the slopes without much walking involved, which is important when you are lugging around ski gear. We stayed at the Hilton this time, which was perfectly located, but there are lots of great places to choose from in the main village area.

Whistler is also home to lots of great restaurants and bars. Make sure you secure reservations ahead of time as they fill fast and you don’t want to miss out on all the good spots. The Brew House is located right beside the Olympic Rings in the centre of town and has great food, lots of craft beers and a two-sided fireplace. It’s warm and cosy and a great spot to enjoy at the end of the day. This is one of my favourites but there is an abundance of restaurants to choose from.

If you’re not a skier or want to relax at the end of the day, stroll through the village and take in the souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants – it’s a true alpine village and a great community.

Whistler certainly won’t disappoint and is a fantastic spot that you will definitely enjoy if travelling to Canada, no matter whether it is in Winter to ski the slopes, or Summer to enjoy the mountain activities. And even if you’re not a skier, it’s a great place to visit and just hang out.

Vivacious Victoria

Victoria, situated on Vancouver Island, was a real surprise on our recent trip to Canada. We had no idea what to expect and had hired a car so we could take the ferry from Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal to Schwartz Bay. We wanted to be able to take in the sights and scenery of beautiful Vancouver Island as had heard much about. The ferry trip really was great, not dissimilar to crossing the English Channel, with ample space, restaurants and viewing areas on board the ferry which was larger than we expected it to be.

They city of Victoria itself, was what surprised and delighted us the most. Our hotel – The Hotel Central Pacific- was perfect; newly renovated and located next door to the British Columbia Parliament Building. The British Columbia Parliament Building is stunning and a wondrous place of architecture that overlooks the harbour, and can be seen from many vantage points. At night, the whole building is covered in lights and is a picture postcard to look at. This part of town is steeped in history with monuments recognising the states of Canada and also home to the Royal British Columbia museum as well as the Parliament Building. It’s a beautiful area of town and a great place to be based.

The inner harbour is stunning and you could sit for hours watching the seaplanes cruising in and out and the mini taxis transporting people around. One of the best spots to watch the harbour activities is Fishermans Wharf Park. The floating pier has residential houses, shops and kiosks and is a little hidden away but a great stop for tourists to have a wander around. It’s also home to friendly seals that will swim right up to you, not at all perturbed by the human activity.

Bastion Square is in the centre of town and is filled with pubs, restaurants and shops. The pub feel is vibrant and definitely recommended as a great spot for dinner. The nearby Canoe Club is also great for a night out. Whilst we were in Victoria, the new Johnson Street Bridge opened so there were lots of activities happening in that area to celebrate, but it’s obviously always a fun part of town.

Other areas to visit are the Christ Church Cathedral, the Steamship Terminal, Centennial Square, Chinatown, Miniature World and Thunderbird Park.

When you’re ready for a break, take a cuppa at the Murchies Tea House – where they serve Maple Tea that sounds sweet, but is divine and you won’t be able to stop yourself buying boxes to bring home. This amazing tea-house is a must for any tea lover. Traditional High Tea is also served at the Pendray Inn and Tea House, which is a great way to spend a lazy afternoon and the lavender scones were amazing.

The striking thing about Victoria was the contrasting elements in a relatively small area. The town is filled with tradition, history and refinery; absolutely stunning to look at and walk around. It is also trendy, vibrant and great for a good night out on the town. Victoria is home to lovely walks and scenery, and a bustling harbour town, all rolled into one and it really does have something to offer everyone.

If you have time, take a day trip out to Butchart Gardens, which were truly sensational. Several people had recommended to me and we were not disappointed. We also spent a day taking in Shawnigan Lake as well as Elk and Beaver Lakes. These spots were all close to Victoria so within a short driving distance, but do bear in mind that Vancouver Island is huge, and you could spend days exploring if you have the time to do so.

If you’re visiting Vancouver, make sure you take time out to check out Victoria and Vancouver Island – it’s a MUST on any itinerary to Vancouver or the West Coast of Canada.

Vibrant Vancouver

This was my second trip to Vancouver, and even though I saw many of the sights my first time around, this time was completely different and I got a whole new feeling for a city I already loved. I think one of the most important things to note with Vancouver is that it has a ‘home away from home’ feel – it’s very similar to Australia in lots of aspects. The people are friendly and welcoming, the main city itself is fairly compact (600,000 in the main city but then it sprawls into suburbia) and it’s very easy to navigate.

To get your full bearings, head to the top of the Vancouver Lookout Tower, as this gives you a 360 degree view of the city. Your tickets are valid for the full day, so pop back as we did when it was dark so that you can see the city all lit up as well as during the day. Enjoy a drink and snacks in the revolving restaurant and watch the world go by.

Stanley Park is an absolute must and can be done on foot, by car, by bicycle or horse and carriage which is a whole lot of fun. The Park itself is huge, 400 hectares in total and you can enjoy views of the water, surrounding mountains and take in the famous seawall. Don’t miss the First Nations totem poles, 9 O’clock Gun, Girl in a Wet Suit rock monument and take in the amazing trees and gardens. And if you’re travelling in March/April, you won’t have far to look to get a magnificent view of the cherry blossom trees which are absolutely stunning.

Visit Granville Island and walk through the fantastic public markets; the perfect place to buy a few items and enjoy a spot of lunch. The fresh produce on offer is fantastic and more than worthy of sampling and savouring so it is a great place to head too when you’re ready for a bite to eat.

Gastown is another area to visit, although I would suggest doing at night. Gastown is home to a number of bars, restaurants and cafes, and a great place for dinner or a spot of nightlife action. Be sure to see the old Gas steam clock which is still operating today, it’s something quite different. Yaletown is the other area that is filled with restaurants, very trendy and modern and there are some fabulous restaurants here but I have to admit, Gastown would be my preference.

Take in a Canucks Ice-Hockey game if you can. This was so much fun, and one of our highlights in Vancouver without a doubt. We had no idea what we were watching but it was easy to get carried away with the crowds, so would recommend getting involved and obtaining tickets if you have the opportunity. The whole city watches and the stadium is great, a definite for any sport or live action lover.

We had a few ‘in and out’ stops in Vancouver on this journey (as we were following a School rugby team). Each time we stayed in a different hotel, namely the Hyatt Regency and then the Westin Grand Vancouver and I can highly recommend both hotels. Everything is within an easy walking distance of both and to be honest, it would be hard to stay in a bad location but the hotels are all of varying standard and easy walking distance to different attractions.

There are two options – one that includes the four day Inca Trail trek, and one that is for non-trekkers that includes an array of traditional activities and a two hour trek and its fine for couples to split if one wants to do the trek and the others does not. We shall all meet in one of the most magnificent tourist destinations in the world – Machu Picchu.
