Saw Joss Whedon's "The Cabin in the Woods" the other day and I have to say it was fully up to Joss Whedon's usual standard of excellence. To me the whole thing was an allegory of warfare, governments sending the brightest and best of the young people off to the battlefield. I'll bite my tongue against any further spoiler.

My latest creation.

Art Bop. The idea is to create movies that work same way jazz works. Inspired by other movies. Make visual riffs while creating new stuff in the same idiom. Put a new little twist to the theme. To scat and riff in a similar way visually. Soundtrack inspired by György Ligeti. Thanks to rwhite at sharecg and Jack at Celestia Motherlode whose models I used and to Shukky who created the spacesuit. See the credits at the end of the movie for the software used.

The soundtrack I made for Samuel Beckett's "FILM" starring Buster Keaton will now have to soldier on by itself, as an audio album, without the movie. The distributers, no doubt inspired by the success of "The Artist", have strongly asserted copyright ownership of "FILM" at both YouTube and The Internet Archive.

Better Off Ted update...

Apparently "Better Off Ted" did get shown in the UK but on some obscure satellite channel called "FX" (Harry Hill/Tv Burp style shrug to camera). I've liked this show since the first trailers appeared on the internet and few years ago and I'm still waiting for BBC or Channel Four to show it. Anyway, here are some clips illustrating why I love "Better Off Ted" and wish they'd allow me to watch the damn thing on terestrial tv:

I went to David Blandy's exhibition at Phoenix Arts Centre here in Exeter. I strongly recommend a visit. David Blandy jams popular culture while taking us on an exploration of the inner and outer worlds, the world of the self and the world of comics, movies, tv, computer games and collectables.

The exhibition is open until 17 March.

David Blandy: Passage of the Soul

David Blandy's work deals with his problematic relationship with popular culture, highlighting the slippage and tension between fantasy and reality in everyday life. Searching for his cultural position in the world, Blandy often uses humour to ask the difficult question of just how much the self is formed by the mass-media of records, films and television, and whether he has an identity outside that.
Passage of the soul brings together several recent works that explore this ongoing quest, as enacted by a cast of alter-egos that stem from the artist’s passions for kung fu, soul, hip hop and Japanese manga. These include his powerful Hiroshima inspired video and installation Child of the Atom; Duels & Dualities: Battle of the Soul, a hacked beat ‘em up arcade game which pits Blandy’s back catalogue of alter-egos against each other in a traditional 2D fighting arena; and the first part of a new, episodic animation Anjin which draws reference from 1980’s Franco-Japanese TV cartoon Ulysses 31 (itself inspired by Homer’s Odyssey) and the life of William Adams - the first Englishman to reach Japan and the only westerner to be granted the title of Samurai.

As a road sweeper I had to be out in all weathers, rain, snow, ice, blazing sunshine, etc. all the year round. I had a one hour, unpaid, lunch break and I had to find somewhere to sit and eat my lunch while keeping an eye on the sweeping barrow. Sometimes, if it wasn't raining, I would sit by Miller's Crossing and Blackaller Weir. The key thing for lunch was to know somewhere on the route where I would be less bothered by members of the public than usual. Members of the public are always bothering road sweepers with stupid questions and comments ("You're doing a good job there, boy" - etc., or "How do I get to the concert hall?" and so on....) ["You have to practice"]
