Notes on “Pirates”

In my oil on blue prepared paper painting "Pirates", it is April in Paris. At a café in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a couple lock eyes in a knowing glance like pirates preparing a raid. Co-conspirators in the game of love.

In "Pirates" I have created a surface where "ghosts of earlier ideas" remain which invites the viewer into a non-linear experience of time. In the wake of the 2025 fires, "Pirates" offers a narrative of resilience, community, and the enduring power of love—agape, familiar, and platonic—reminding the viewer that "art is a beautiful and necessary means for building hope, dignity, and imagination". As the "Love Is All You Need" exhibition continues through March 2026, "Pirates" remains a focal point for understanding how contemporary figurative painting can address the complexities of a world in a constant state of transition.

Our group exhibition "Under One Roof" was masterfully curated by @peterfrankonart and skillfully put together by @studios_3026 working with @cars.la.

Thank You @caroledixon , @artstigator , and @justlikepattismith for highlighting the art being created at the Santa Monica Airport. When Frieze is gone, we will still be here painting works that artfully chronicle the history that we live in.

My artwork was inspired by the 8th–9th century Sri Lankan sculpture of Tārā housed in the British Museum in London. The painting serves as a bridge between the ancient religious traditions of the Global South and the urban reality of modern Los Angeles. By placing Schomaker—as part of her "Perceive Me" project—within this divine iconography, my painting engages with a broader cultural movement toward authenticity, vulnerability, and the reclamation of the human hand in an era of technological acceleration.

Schomaker’s own practice sits at the "intersection of personal healing and collective liberation," using her own body as raw material to challenge the "beauty industrial complex" of the 21st century. Her landmark "Perceive Me" project, which began in Los Angeles—a city notorious for its unrealistic images of the female body—was envisioned as a form of protest against the "marginalization of plus-size individuals". By embodying Tārā in this new painting, Schomaker extends this transformation into the realm of the sacred. The voluptuous figure that the art world once ignored or shamed is here elevated to the status of a Bodhisattva—a protector to whom one turns in distress. The divine figure reimagined as a contemporary presence navigating troubled times.

My painting of Kristine Schomaker as Tārā portrays a living, modern woman who has broken free from societal restraints as a static object in Room 33 in the London museum. Upon its acquisition in the 1830s, British Museum authorities were concerned that the "large exposed breasts" and "curvaceous hips" would be too provocative for the public, leading to the statue being hidden for thirty years. This history of shaming the female form directly mirrors the struggles Schomaker addresses in "Perceive Me".

We are in an age of unsettling transformations, from the climate crisis to democratic backsliding. In such turbulent times, the pursuit of peace, justice, and democracy demands renewed imagination. Path of Compassion (Kristine Schomaker in the Guise of the Bodhisattva Tārā) offers hope—an enlightened being who helps humanity escape from a recurring cycle of suffering. A Bodhisattva who sees us through troubled times by teaching us to turn again to the earth and to each other.

In the LA Times Malia Mendez writes: "One artist to look out for is Kristine Schomaker, whose workshop on body image will complement her collaborative portrait project, “Perceive Me,” in which she poses nude for other artists. Visitors will also be able to sign up to do the same, “so they can see what that experience is like but also how people perceive them, because often we’re much harder on ourselves than other people are about what we look like,”

In an excerpt from the essay for the show and catalog, Peter Frank writes, “The artists currently gathered in the Santa Monica Airport Art Studios – like all the artists who have occupied the rooms in the complex – plough their own fields, work their own magic, exemplify states of mind and matter as diverse as there are modes of art available to them… The Western world brims with such intimate multiple workshops; artists carve themselves workplaces wherever they need to, and usually do it as a cooperative production. Opening Sunday, February 22nd in the Propeller Gallery at the Santa Monica Airport Arts Center- Studios 3026!

On June 26, 2015 Marriage Equality became the law of the land and with hundreds of others we celebrated on the Supreme Court steps. Later on that glorious day, I chatted with President Obama's photographer Pete Souza in front of the White House which was lit up in rainbow colors in celebration of the LGBTQ community.

While we watched, the Presidential Marine Corps unit returned with President Obama from his moving speech at the memorial service for the church folks who were gunned down by a young white supremacist in South Carolina. President Obama sang "Amazing Grace" that day.

In her Netflix film "Becoming", Michelle Obama reflects upon that day as well. Michelle Obama describes how she and her daughter Malia sneaked outside that night, needing to share in the crowd's joy after all the terrible grief in Charleston. They let the jubilation soften their anguish. Arrivals and departures. The struggle for equality for all continues. - Gregg Chadwick

Beloved in Nordic countries for her highly original style, Finnish painter Helene Schjerfbeck (1862–1946) is relatively unknown to the rest of the world. Overcoming immense personal struggles and working in a remote location for decades, she produced a powerful body of work through sheer force of will. This exhibition affirms her rightful place in the story of modern art.

Following Schjerfbeck’s journey from art school in Paris to her final days in Sweden, the exhibition illustrates her shift from traditional and realistic subjects to a simplified, spare style. In the early 1900s, using her mother and neighbors as models, she painted abstractly, paring down her subjects in form and color and developing a bold, new language. Seeing Silence: The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck is the first exhibition to showcase the work of the artist in a major United States museum. Got the word from my brother last night that my Mom has now moved on to hospice. Packing up our things today - MSue and I will drive North to Pacific Grove tomorrow where my Mom is resting before her great ride on the Mystery Train.

Two years ago I was honored to present this painting to a collection of journalists from the UK who were in Santa Monica for Frieze Week. I choked up a bit while describing this painting. My Mom grew up in Newark, New Jersey. Weequahic High grad. Daughter of a Jersey Central Railway engineer. @jimmybuffs aficionado. She ventured from the Newark Bay to explore the world with my Dad - @marines.

In this painting, I have gathered a number of her remembrances into an homage to Mom and life itself. The woman in pink seems to be a metaphoric representation of Mom - a young Peg Susan Chadwick on a Newark bridge looking out towards NYC and the world beyond. I can hear her saying - "Look, I see sunshine!"

Be Still

“In Be Still, the recognizable physical objects I depict serve as gateways to viewers -an almost empty Coke bottle, a Mystery Train 45, a bubblegum machine, a burger and fries, a bouquet bursting with color, a trans rights button.” - Gregg Chadwick

1. Memphis Sugar (Gumball, Coke, Mystery Train)

oil on linen 12”x12”x1.5”, 2025

"Memphis Sugar (Gumball, Coke, Mystery Train)" was inspired by a Coca-Cola break at the cafe in the historic Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Sun Studio is known worldwide as “The Birthplace of Rock’n’roll”. It is the discovery location of musical legends from B.B. King to Elvis Presley to Johnny Cash to Jerry Lee Lewis.

2. Salt and Shadow (Burger, Fries, Condiments)

"Salt and Shadow (Burger, Fries, Condiments)" was inspired by a delicious meal and vibrant conversation at Vin-by-the-Sea: a bistro where Carmel California's coastal charm meets small-production wines and thoughtful food pairings. A simple repast elegantly crafted and elevated into art.

3. Stonewall Bouquet (Pomegranate, Rose, Trans Rights)

oil on linen 12”x12”x1.5”, 2025

"Stonewall Bouquet (Pomegranate, Rose, Trans Rights)" was inspired by a gift of flowers from a collector of my art. As I made an espresso the morning after the floral gift, I glanced over at the table where the bouquet was lit up in a hopeful morning light. A trans rights button in honor of my daughter shone like a jewel in the ensemble.

Established in 2015, Band of Vices launched as an artistic collaborative focused on emerging and mid-career artists with an emphasis on inclusion. Today Band of Vices is an internationally recognized platform for art and culture. BoV opened its doors with a mission.

There was a time when it was bad to be black; a time when brown was illegal; a time when being gay or queer was immoral; a time when those less abled were abominable. There were times when being different was a vice. We reject those labels. For those historically undervalued, overlooked or cast aside we say now is your time, now is our time. We are creating a Band of Vices. We reject colonialism, we reject tribalism, we reject exclusivity, we embrace uniqueness, diversity, and inclusion. We embrace love.

Band of Vices announces Dear Artists… BE STILL — the second chapter of its multi-show initiative and a love letter to visual artists and patrons. Rooted in still life, this iteration asks for a different kind of attention: slower, closer, more honest. Dedicated to the legacy of Melvin A. Marshall, a curator who championed artists with care, BE STILL arrives as the gallery’s 50th exhibition, staging a quiet disruption of the current art-market narrative: access over anxiety, presence over spectacle, substance over noise.
