Facebook was famously born in a Harvard dorm room, which might be why its much-hyped valuation of $75 billion to $100 billion seems to suffer from grade inflation.

Facebook pulled back the curtain on some of its financials in its IPO filing yesterday, and analysts started combing through it immediately. Even the ones who are positive about Facebook's long-term potential — and not all of them are — concede that a valuation of up to $100 billion basically bakes in the assumption that the social network will become the next Google — or better.

The divide seems to be between those who think Zuckerberg and his team have the chops to live up to their early potential, and those who don't.

Facebook has a lot going for it: 845 million active monthly users, more than $3 billion in annual revenue and a still-galloping growth rate. Its profit margin of 27 percent last year also compares favorably with fellow Internet giant Google's 26 percent.

But a valuation even at the low end of the $75 billion to $100 billion range that's been thrown around is out of sync with the revenue and income numbers in its filing statement. At $75 billion, Facebook would be worth about 40 percent of Google — a company that had profits about 11 times Facebook's. What's more, some analysts already see signs that Facebook's momentum is slowing.

Facebook shares traded privately at just around $30 a share in the fourth quarter of last year, which would give the company a valuation of $80 billion, give or take. (In the wake of its filing, that figure jumped to nearly $90 billion.) Its net income of $1 billion last year also offers encouragement to the argument that $100 billion is plausible.

"This is a single most important filing and IPO to come around probably since Google, and Google did not have nearly the brand recognition and ubiquitous nature" Facebook enjoys, said David Menlow, president of IPOfinancial.com.

Google didn't face the same competition for online ad dollars and eyeballs when it went public in 2004, either.

"This is where some of our optimism tempers a bit," said Rick Summers, senior equity analyst at Morningstar. Google's "silver bullet" was the development of its AdWords platform. "We had a performance-based advertising system that provided an immediate, measurable return on investment for advertisers. Google really defined the category and the trajectory of that market," he said.

"There's been so much hype about Facebook, but I don't see it supported by the numbers," said Francis Gaskins, president and editor of IPODesktop.com. Google has a market capitalization of 19 times its net income, he points out. Assuming that Facebook is in the same league as Google, that would only give it a valuation of $19 billion.

There are other skeptics, too.

"The big question is, Can Facebook maintain its growth rates?" said Sam Hamadeh, CEO of research company PrivCo. While Facebook prefers to focus on its monthly active user base and global growth, Hamadeh said that a look at more mature markets shows signs of trouble ahead.

"The U.S. and Canada went from 124 million to 126 million (users) from the third quarter to the fourth quarter. That's pretty concerning," Hamadeh said.

Morningstar's Summers also pointed out that Facebook will hit a wall, so to speak, in its growth when it comes to China, where access is restricted.

Menlow, for one, isn't ruffled by these projections. Even if growth of new users slows, the company can offset that by figuring out how to make more money from existing users. There are two main channels for this, both of which Facebook is already using.

The first is advertising. Facebook has an unparalleled amount of detailed, intimate data about its users, and a platform that can unlock the value of all those links and likes for advertisers will go a long way toward bolstering its bottom line.

But Facebook can also earn money from users directly. Last year, 12 percent of its revenue came from its relationship with Zynga, much of that in the form of virtual goods bought by players of Zynga's popular games. The flip side of this advantage is that an increasing share of the money Facebook makes depends on Zynga creating the next addictive game. As anyone in the movie business would be quick to point out, it can be expensive to keep chasing after the next blockbuster.

Without a silver bullet like AdWords, Facebook will have an uphill climb trying to sustain growth in ad revenues. While the 69 percent increase it saw between 2010 and 2011 would be amazing for a more established company, the promise of Facebook's sky-high valuation is that its growth will be by leaps and bounds.

And according to Hamadeh, the company is already reaching the outer limit of how many ads it can cram on to a page without turning users off.

"At one point they had two ads per page ... about two weeks ago, you started seeing six and seven," Hamadeh said. Some people are already implementing ad-blocking apps, he added. "That doesn't bode well."

Super Bowl: The top 10 quarterback matchups of all-time

If media day showed us anything, it's that the quarterbacks are the show. The storylines in this Super Bowl, as much as any before it, are driven by the quarterbacks ‒ Tom Brady making his case for the greatest of all time, while Eli Manning makes his case that he's as good as Tom Brady, his brother, or any other quarterback who ever played.

MJD ranked all the Super Bowl quarterback matchups by the combined regular-season QB ratings of the participants:

10. Super Bowl XXIX - Steve Young vs. Stan Humphries - 194.4.
And Stan Humphries still made the list! Worldwide audiences were glued to their televisions to watch Stanny Hump Hump throw lasers ‒ ah, who am I kidding? This has nothing to do with Stanny Hump Hump and everything to do with Steve Young, who had a monster passer rating of 112.8 that year. It's the only matchup on the list where one QB so clearly carried the other. That's how great Steve Young was in '94 ‒ he put Stan Humphries on this list.

9. Super Bowl XXVI - Mark Rypien vs. Jim Kelly - 195.5.
It's good to see Jim Kelly on the list, as he was a fantastic quarterback who had some great regular seasons. I doubt he fondly remembers any of his Super Bowls, though. And a surprise to see Mark Rypien, but he was a stud in that '91 season. He had a rating of 97.9, with 28 touchdowns against 11 interceptions ‒ and a tremendous yards-per-completion average of 14.3. It was his best NFL season by far.

8. Super Bowl VI - Roger Staubach and Bob Griese - 195.7.
One of just two single-digit Super Bowls (in regular numbers, not Roman Numerals, or, acknowledging the only purpose they have left in the world, Super Bowl numbers) to make the list, the victory goes to Staubach. His regular season was better (104.8 to Griese's 90.9), and he was the game's MVP, too. Griese wouldn't stay down, though ‒ he won the next two Super Bowls.

7. Super Bowl XL - Ben Roethlisberger vs. Matt Hasselbeck - 196.8.
I was a little surprised to see this one make the list, as it's a Super Bowl that certainly won't be remembered for its high level of quarterback play. Ben Roethlisberger won the game despite an in-game rating of 22.6 ‒ nine completions on 11 attempts, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Hasselbeck threw the ball a lot more, going 26 of 49, but his yards-per-attempt was actually worse than Roethlisberger's.

6. Super Bowl XXXIX - Tom Brady vs. Donovan McNabb - 197.3.
Tom Brady is one of only two quarterbacks to make the list twice (the other is Ben Roethlisberger), and this one happened to come at the same time as Donovan McNabb's best year as a pro. Brady won the matchup, of course, while McNabb was alleged to have gotten tired and vomited on his shoes in the game. The time since this game has been kinder to Brady.

5. Super Bowl XLV - Aaron Rodgers vs. Ben Roethlisberger - 198.2.
Last year's Super Bowl matchup, in which Aaron Rodgers outdueled Ben Roethlisberger, puts Rodgers on the list ‒ something else that Brett Favre can't claim. Incidentally, had the Packers been able to beat the Giants this season, the matchup of Rodgers vs. Brady would've destroyed every other game on this list. The QB rating total would've been 228.1, more than 16 points better than the current No. 1.

4. Super Bowl XLVI - Tom Brady vs. Eli Manning - 198.5.
Please note that this is the game being played on Sunday, not the previous matchup in Super Bowl XLII. That one narrowly missed the list (191.1 if you're curious, 13th all time), while this one easily ranks as one of the best Super Bowl QB matchups of all time. Keep that in mind as you're watching. We're in the golden era of quarterbacking and we should enjoy it.

3. Super Bowl I - Bart Starr vs. Len Dawson - 206.7.
It's rather remarkable that the first Super Bowl ever ranks so high on the list. The higher numbers definitely skew to the more recent Super Bowls as I expected, but there were some great ones early ‒ three of the first 11 Super Bowls topped out at over 190 (Ken Stabler vs. Fran Tarkenton in Super Bowl XI didn't quite make the list). Of all the totals under 170, 14 of them happened in Super Bowl XXI or lower, while only two came after that point.

2. Super Bowl XLIV - Drew Brees vs. Peyton Manning - 209.5.
The last three Super Bowls are in the top five (including the one that's about to be played), with the run starting here. It's good to see Peyton Manning make the list, too. He's only played in two Super Bowls to this point, and in his other one, he was saddled with Rex Grossman as an opponent, severely limiting the potential. This one, with Brees, has all kinds of star power, but still probably pales in comparison to No. 1 on the list.

1. Super Bowl XIX - Joe Montana vs. Dan Marino - 211.8.
Color me surprised that Joe Montana only makes the top 10 once ‒ I guess it's a sign of the inflated quarterback numbers of today. Still, even with today's inflation a Montana vs. Marino matchup is enough to top the charts. If Super Bowl XIX had the same media hype and attention of Super Bowl XLVI, Montana and Marino wouldn't have been able to breathe back in '84. Marino, of course, came up short in the only Super Bowl he ever played in.

Washington Senate approves bill Bill 6239 to legalize gay marriage

OLYMPIA, WASHINGTON— According to (AP) The Washington state Senate passed a bill Wednesday night that would legalize same-sex marriage, setting the stage for the state to become the seventh to allow gay and lesbian couples to wed.

The gay marriage bill is Senate Bill 6239.

The measure now heads to the House, which is expected to approve it and could take action on it as early as next week. Gov. Chris Gregoire supports the measure and has said she will sign it into law, though opponents have promised to challenge it at the ballot with a referendum.

The packed public galleries burst into applause as the Senate passed the measure on a 28-21 vote after nearly an hour and a half of debate. Four Republicans crossed party lines and voted with majority Democrats for the measure. Three Democrats voted against it.

Democratic Sen. Ed Murray, the bill's sponsor, said he knew same-sex marriage "is as contentious as any issue that this body has considered in its history."

Lawmakers who vote against gay marriage "are not, nor should they be accused of bigotry," he said.
"Those of us who support this legislation are not, and we should not be accused of, undermining family life or religious freedom," said Murray, a gay lawmaker from Seattle who has spearheaded past gay rights and domestic partnership laws in the state. "Marriage is how society says you are a family."

Nearly a dozen amendments were introduced, including several that passed that strengthen legal protections for religious groups and organizations. A handful were rejected, including one that would exempt photographers, cake decorators and other business owners who object to gay marriage from the law, and another that called for a referendum clause to be added to the bill.

Sen. Dan Swecker, R-Rochester, argued that the proposed law alters the definition of marriage and "will lead to the silencing of those who believe in traditional marriage."

"It's ironic how a bill which purports to be about ending discrimination leaves the door open so far for discrimination going in the other direction," he said. "I'm extremely concerned that without additional protections, this legislation will create a hostile environment for those of us who believe in traditional marriage."

Even though the referendum clause amendment was rejected, opponents have already promised to file a challenge to the legislation. But that can't be done until after it is passed by the full Legislature and signed into law by Gregoire. Opponents then must turn in 120,577 signatures by June 6.

If opponents aren't able to collect enough signatures, gay and lesbian couples would be able to be wed starting in June. Otherwise, they would have to wait until the results of a November election.
Before last week, it wasn't certain the Senate would have the support to pass the measure, as a handful of Democrats remained undecided.

But after the first public hearing on the issue Jan. 23, a previously undecided Democratic senator, Mary Margaret Haugen of Camano Island, said she would be the 25th and deciding vote in support of the bill, all but ensuring its passage.

Two of the previously undecided Republicans, Sens. Joe Fain of Auburn and Andy Hill of Redmond voted in support of the measure Wednesday, as did two Republican colleagues, Sens. Steve Litzow of Mercer Island and Cheryl Pflug of Maple Valley.

Litzow said he was voting for the bill "because I believe it's the right thing to do."
"I believe an adult should have the right to marry the person they love," he said. "It's that simple for me."
The three Democrats who voted in opposition were Sens. Jim Hargrove of Hoquiam, Tim Sheldon of Potlatch and Paull Shin of Edmonds.

Hargrove choked up as he said that while he respects all people and doesn't judge anyone, "I have to do what I believe is right. And for me, right is voting against this bill."

Alex Guenser, a 26-year-old engineer, drove down to Olympia from his Redmond home with his boyfriend to watch the Senate debate.

"I'm really excited to have Washington pass this," he said. "I'm excited for my state."
Gay marriage opponent Jane Sterland, 56, stood outside the Senate gallery before the debate started. Sterland said she was disappointed by the light turnout of same-sex marriage foes.

"It saddens me that there aren't more Christians here tonight," she said. "I'm just very grieved about this whole thing. I want to be here for prayer support against this issue."

Same-sex marriage is legal in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and the District of Columbia.

Lawmakers in New Jersey and Maryland are expected to debate gay marriage this year, and Maine could see a gay marriage proposal on the November ballot.

Proposed amendments for constitutional bans on gay marriage will be on the ballots in North Carolina on May 8 and in Minnesota on Nov. 6.

The debate over same-sex marriage in Washington state has changed significantly since lawmakers passed Washington's Defense of Marriage Act in 1998, which banned gay marriage. The constitutionality of DOMA was ultimately upheld by the state Supreme Court in 2006, but earlier that year, a gay civil rights measure passed after nearly 30 years of failure.

The quick progression of domestic partnership laws in the state came soon after, with a domestic partnership law in 2007, and two years of expansion that culminated in 2009 with the so-called "everything but marriage law" that was upheld by voters after opponents filed a referendum to challenge it.

Under the measure that passed Wednesday, the more than 9,300 couples currently registered in domestic partnerships would have two years to either dissolve their relationship or get married. Domestic partnerships that aren't ended prior to June 30, 2014, would automatically become marriages.

Domestic partnerships would remain for senior couples where at least one partner is 62 years old or older. That provision was included to help seniors who don't remarry out of fear they could lose certain pension or Social Security benefits.

With this bill other countries and sectors would absolutely air their diverse critics and comments.

Mitt Romney: Victory in Florida Presidential Primary

Tampa, Florida - Mitt Romney hit the victory in Florida's Republican U.S. presidential primary on Tuesday.

With 76% of the unofficial count, Romney had 47% of the vote compared to 32% for Gingrich, 13% for former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and 7% for Texas Rep. Ron Paul.

U.S. television networks projected Romney as the winner just as the last polls closed in Florida.

Official results, with more than 1.5 million votes counted out of a total possible electorate of more than 4 million registered Republicans, also showed Romney at 47%, Gingrich at 32%, Santorum at 13% and Paul at 7%, according to the Florida Department of State website.

Final polls closed at 8 p.m. ET and Romney jumped out to a strong early lead, buoyed by solid support among more than 632,000 voters who cast absentee or early ballots. His solid victory blunted any momentum Gingrich gained from his January 21 victory in South Carolina.

The victory enabled Romney, the wealthy former Massachusetts governor and private equity firm executive, to rebound from his decisive loss to Gingrich in the January 21 South Carolina primary.

The well-funded and well-organized Romney surged in opinion polls in Florida after aggressively pressing Gingrich in two debates and pounding him with negative advertising.

The campaign for the Republican nomination to challenge Obama, a Democrat, in the November 6 election now tilts in Romney's favor with seven contests in February in which he could win or do well, starting with Nevada on Saturday.

The Florida victory also may widen a rift between establishment Republicans who back Romney and conservative voters who favor Gingrich, a dynamic that could complicate the party's effort to oust Obama in November.

"As this primary unfolds, our opponents in the other party have been watching, and they like to comfort themselves with the thought that a competitive campaign will leave us divided and weak," Romney told a jubilant crowd in his victory speech in which he focused on Obama after two weeks of clobbering Gingrich.

"But I've got news for them. A competitive primary does not divide us. It prepares us, and we will win," Romney added.

The Florida primary was the fourth in the series of state-by-state contests to pick the Republican nominee. Romney has triumphed in two of the first four contests, having also won in New Hampshire and coming in second in Iowa and South Carolina.

Romney was helped by the millions of dollars in negative television ads against Gingrich that undermined the argument advanced by the former speaker of the House of Representatives that he is the conservative heir to Republican President Ronald Reagan.

Gingrich fought back with ads of his own, castigating Romney as a party insider and elite friend of Wall Street - and called him "for all practical purposes a liberal." But Gingrich did not have the same amount of money as Romney, who had used a similar advertising spree to cut Gingrich down to size in Iowa.

"It is now clear that this will be a two-person race between the conservative leader Newt Gingrich and the Massachusetts moderate," Gingrich told his supporters after the primary.

The next contest is the Nevada caucuses on Saturday, followed next Tuesday by caucuses in Colorado and Minnesota and a primary in Missouri.

Steve Jobs, the mastermind behind Apple's iPhone, iPad, iPod, iMac and iTunes, has died at age 56.

Statement for Apple: “We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today,” the company said in a brief statement.

“Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.”

Spartacus star "andy whitfield" has passed away at age 39

If you watched the Spartacus: Blood and Sand, the man who star and portrayed with strenght an courage the champion of arena, indeed also in real life.

Andy Whitfield has died of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in Sydney, Australia today at the age of 39. Representatives and family members of the Spartacus: Blood and Sand star confirmed the sad news today. The Australian actor's wife, Vashti, issued a statement saying her husband died on a 'sunny Sydney morning' in the 'arms of his loving wife.'

According to Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht : 'We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield.

'We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in Spartacus and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life.

'Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace.
'Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and fans.'

Steve DeKnight, Spartacus director, post to Twitter to express his pain. 'No words to express the depth of such a loss. You will be deeply missed, my brother’.

Whitfield who was born in Bankstown Sydney and lived in Australia. He studied engineering at the University of Western Sydney and worked in Lidcombe as an engineer before moving to Sydney in 1999. He has appeared in several Australian television series, such as Opening Up, All Saints, The Strip, Packed to the Rafters and McLeod's Daughters. Whitfield gained his first prominent role in the Australian supernatural film Gabriel. See: wikipedia.

The actor was diagnosed with the disease in March, 2010 and began treatment immediately in New Zealand.

He appeared in all 13 episodes of the first season that aired in 2010, and was preparing to shoot the second when he was diagnosed with cancer. Whitfield made also a brief, uncredited voice-only appearance in the prequel mini-series Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, which premiered on 21 January 2011

Althought that his life here has to end soon statement from wife, family, colleagues was a manifestation of the real courage he show on and off camera. Surpassed his own battle indeed a champion not only here but in his everlasting life.

has been singing its praises, suggesting that it be eaten and used topically on the face. The berry’s high concentration of antioxidants, Vitamin C and the rare fatty acid Omega-7 nourish skin and hair and help stimulate collagen production. One recent study found that it may even help fight obesity.

Dryness is another clear giveaway of age and will drain the vibrancy from your complexion. Schneider suggests eating more cottage cheese, which contains selenium and other essential minerals that are known to fight dry skin and dandruff. Other foods that boost skin’s moisture are olive oil, walnuts and fatty fish like salmon. And, if all else fails, break out the wine. MANILA, Philippines (By OLIVER TEVES - Associated Press AP) — Heavy rains and floods battered the northeastern Philippines for a third day Wednesday as the death toll from a slow-moving storm rose to at least 24 with nine others missing.

Waist-deep floodwaters swamped the houses of about half a million people, nearly half of the population of eastern Albay province, after Tropical Storm Nock-ten set off pounding rains since Monday and sent residents to seek shelter in churches and village halls, said Gov. Joey Salceda.

Regional civil defense chief Rafaelito Alejandro said floodwaters in Albay started to subside by noon Wednesday after the storm made landfall in Aurora, about 230 miles (370 kilometers) to the north. It packed maximum winds of 59 miles (95 kilometers) per hour and gusts of up to 75 mph (120 kph).

Alejandro said at least 20 people died in the Bicol region, which includes Albay. Eight of those were buried in landslides in Albay's Polangui township and in nearby Camarines Norte province.

Other fatalities included a mother who was bitten by a poisonous snake that was swept into her home by a flashflood near the Albay provincial capital of Legazpi.

National civil defense administrator Benito Ramos said two others drowned in Cavite province just south of Manila and one each in the central provinces of Marinduque and Iloilo.

Most of the missing are poor fishermen who ventured out to sea despite the stormy weather, he said.

The storm weakened slightly after hitting land, said forecaster Sonny Pajarilla. It is expected to blow out of the country to the South China Sea by Thursday after cutting through the heart of Luzon Island.

Authorities cut off electricity to most of the region to prevent electrocutions, Ramos said.

One of the victims during the power outage was Salceda's mother, who fell on her head after slipping in the dark bathroom, Alejandro said, adding that she wasn't counted as a storm fatality.

Power was restored in Legazpi and most of the other provincial urban centers later Wednesday. Workers removed toppled trees, rocks and other debris blocking roads and firefighters hosed away mud from the streets.

Many domestic flights were canceled and about 1,600 ferry passengers stranded.

There's a good reason why many were surprised when Sam Pinto topped the FHM Philippines Sexiest Woman of the World poll this year.

For one, the said list has become a Marian Rivera-Angel Locsin-Cristine Reyes battle royale the past years. When these four topped the poll, it was usually preceded by a huge project or career-defining move. To be fair, Sam has been in a number of blockbuster movies (“Catch Me... I'm In Love” and last year's box-office hit “Ang Agimat at si Enteng Kabisote,” for instance) but she's not yet as big a name as the constant poll winners when they topped the list.

Sam also isn't the typical definition of sexy. Her famous beer ad shows her in a two-piece bikini, but her frame is more reminiscent of Kim Chiu than Katrina Halili. She's even the first to admit that she doesn't have the requirements to be considered conventionally sexy.

Be that as it may, there's also something about Sam that makes her alluring and, yes, sexy. She has a disarming charm, a beauty that warrants more than a second look. That she admits to being shy adds to the appeal, like she's your typical Taylor Swift-esque girl-next-door girl who prefers to wears T-shirts instead of short skirts but can still rock a sexy, revealing attire to win the hearts of boys and men.

Outstanding Pinoys 2011 in New York to be chosen via Facebook.

In celebration of the Filipino American History Month, a new award — The Outstanding Filipino Americans in New York (TOFA-NY) — was created to recognize individuals and organizations that have influenced the Fil-Am community in a positive way.

To make this year’s TOFA truly a people’s award, voting will be conducted through Facebook. The final voting will be on October 8 this year at midnight.

The organizers said: “we believe social media is crucial in getting the word out about the many personalities and organizations that have made us one significant and dynamic community in this part of the US".

Philippines to host 2013 Centennial Asian Games

MANILA — The Olympic Council of Asia has designated the Philippines as host of the Centennial Asian Games celebration in 2013.

According to Philippine Olympic Committee chair Monico Puentevella from yesterday's interview, athletes and officials from the 45 member-countries of OCA are expected to participate in what will be called the Asian Unity Games to be held in late November 2013 in world famous Boracay, Aklan.

He said the Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr. immediately formed an executive task force after the OCA approved the hosting during its general assembly meeting last week in Tokyo.

Puentevella said outstanding athletes all over Asia in the last 100 years will be invited while active national athletes from the 45 nations will compete in several disciplines, including beach volleyball and open sea marathon.

“We haven’t hosted an event of such magnitude in the last 50 years or so,” said Puentevella, whose father, the late Jesus Puentevella, donned the national colors in tennis and baseball during the 1st Far Eastern Games.

The Asian Games, officially known as Asiad, is a multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from all over Asia. The Asian Games started as the Far Eastern Games, which had its inaugural in Manila 1913. The first Asian Games was held in 1951 in New Delhi.

Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 cast a powerful spell at the midnight box office, grossing a massive $43.5 million, the best showing of all time.
