I’ve been shooting more and more down in the Benson area, and each time it’s just awesome. Much different character and feel than what Tucson offers and so far there hasn’t been a trip down there that hasn’t been totally awesome. Sam is a friend of Samantha, who I photographed last year. It’s always a challenge when clients request some of the same locations as their friends as I’ve always promised myself not to photograph the same location exactly the same, I’m always pushing myself to create something unique and different for every one of my clients. Sam totally rocked her senior portraits, she definitely made my job easy!

It was raining most of the first 45 minutes of the session, makes the earth look awesome here

A while back I took a venture into a different approach for my family portraits. The style, as I and others may call it, is called “family documentary”. Normally photojournalism is completely undirected, unaided “life as it happens” moments where NO intervention or planning has been made to create a photographic opportunity. It is raw, it is real, it is exactly what the story tells. Now this isn’t always what we want to see with family portraits, we always want to look our best, and of course, like we like each other If you missed this first post I made, go see it now, it’s worth a look (besides the fact it was also shot on film). This to me is showcasing what life is like in an average, everyday normal family’s life. For the most part I try and stay completely out of the way with little to no “direction”. We will plan out a schedule per se, but then it’s up to the family to just be themselves. For the many many families that have seen this first session above, it connects with people on a different level because it’s very easy for most families to just “be themselves”. A lot of families will come to me for family portraits feeling a little shy, unsure or uneasy about what the actual “photographic creation” will be like. My number one goal is to make sure that EVERYONE is having a great time and is comfortable, and when I’m not directing you, posing you, or telling you to do something, most people feel like “themselves” and end up completely enjoying the entire time working with me. So, while I still enjoy doing family or couple’s portrait sessions where there is definitely some directed portraiture, being able to relax and “be yourself” definitely makes the entire experience a little bit more fun

Clearly this was the case with the Gomez family! I was delighted to find out that they LOVED this concept and approach and I was even more excited after getting to know them as a family and what they might like to include in their own personal “documentary”. After maybe 3 minutes, their son was an absolute ham for the camera for the entire day and everything was just a blast. It was a little work on my end just trying to keep up with them With careful planning, a creative mind and just having fun, these are moments that will be cherished forever . . . I love being able to be a part of something that will be handed down through the family.

Kevin is one of the first sibling-seniors I get to photograph . . . I photographed his sister’s senior portraits almost 3 years ago! Seems like a long time to me, but I’m glad that I get to work with the family again. Must have done something right We photographed Kevin’s portraits during the muggy monsoon season here, and the clouds were definitely epic that day. Golf, good looks and a star soccer player is a winning combo for me. I LOVE doing the unique and custom stuff . . . as much as I love doing standard portraits, incorporating personality into every session is something I always strive for. Hope I nailed it this time Thanks again Kevin!

Wow. This wedding was just awesome from head to toe. It’s been longer than I would have liked to get these on the blog and share them, but in between travel, moving my apartment and studio (more details to follow) and unpacking and a whole lot of new sessions in between, I’m definitely behind on quite a few awesome sessions. Big thanks for Leslie & Patrick for allowing me to photograph their event. The amazing Christie Board planned the event so perfectly, I was in love with everything that they had put together. LOVE. Oh, ya, if you can’t tell, the American Ranch in Prescott is also an absolutely amazing venue for a beautiful wedding. It was raining all morning and into the mid afternoon, but a miracle came and sunshine was bountiful during the reception and all till sundown. Couldn’t have been better timing

Leslie & Patrick are both just amazing individuals with a bright future ahead of them. During the reception we all got to hear about them through speeches and other events and I stand in awe of both of them; amazing families produce amazing children! They ended the night with some crazy dancing and they REALLY know how to party hard. Hope you enjoy their story as much as I did!

jessica & erick // prescott engagement

Jessica and Erick are such a rad couple. Their photos are equally as rad, so after looking at their set below you will understand just how rad they are. Prescott is a special place for them where they get out of Phoenix to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery, and I must say, I don’t blame them! This is my third session in Prescott in the past 2 months and every time I go I just love it there. Small, quaint, charming and the weather is just awesome. I also LOVE doing new things and going to new locations for sessions, and they had an awesome idea for an older style playground at an old elementary school. Man, this has some playground equipment that I remember playing on when I was little . . . and it totally fit their personality: young, fun and free. Can’t wait for their wedding which will be at the awesome Tubac Golf Resort!
