Akafuku has been sold at Ise Jingu since 1707. It is mochi, but made a different way - where mochi usually have sweet Anko inside, Akafuku is mochi covered with Anko, and meant to be shaped like the Isuzu River 五十鈴川.

I don't understand how I got the Yelp! Mobile Streaker badge. I hadn't checked in to Yelp! in over 4 months... I get back in the mix and check in two days straight and it gives me this badge for "Checking in Everyday". Don't quite get it. The only thing that is weird to me is that I was actually running at the time. Surely the GPS isn't that good...! Why was I running? I stopped at Starbucks and the line was out the door... Well I just figured that the Starbucks a couple blocks down the street would get me in and out more quickly and back to my illegally parked car so I literally ran. It was getting around the time of day when they start giving tickets. I was right. And happy. And no parking ticket.

I see this truck in it's parking lot almost every day on my commute home from work and am starting to get curious. Happy New Year! 2012 is here and it wouldn't be complete with the traditional Japanese New Year decoration Kagami Mochi

Kagami mochi (鏡餅) is a special traditional Japanese decoration for the New Year, usually displayed inside the house to bring good luck and prosperity in the new year. It is made from two rice cakes (mochi) of different sizes, the smaller placed over the larger one, and a daidai, a Japanese type of bitter orange placed on top.

A kanji writing for daidai (代々) can mean “generation to generation", so the small orange symbolizes the continuity of the generations and long life, while the mochi symbolizes the past year and the year to come. So, kagami mochi symbolizes the continuity of the family over the years.
