The dawn of Aadi Krithigai arrives with the fragrance of devotion. The month of Aadi, when the Sun begins his southern journey, carries a quiet power. And on the Krithika Nakshatra, the heavens themselves seem to glow with the story of Lord Murugan.

From the fiery eye of Lord Shiva sprang six sparks of divine light. Carried by Agni and Vayu, they reached the Saravana Poigai lake, where six celestial maidens—the Krittikas—nurtured six radiant infants. When Goddess Parvati embraced them, they merged into one child with six faces, Arumugam, the warrior of wisdom and compassion. On this sacred day, she placed the Vel in his hands, a spear of courage, a weapon of light.

On this sacred Āṣāḍha Bahula Pañchami, devotees across the land celebrate the Aradhana Mahotsava of Sri Jayatirtharu at Malkhed. Known as Teekacharyaru, Teekarayaru, and Teekakrutpadaru, he stands as the sixth pontiff of the Madhwa Peetha and one of the greatest commentators in the history of Indian philosophy.

Sri Jayateertharu is the sixth Pontiff of Sri Madhwacharya Peetha and is popularly known by “Teekarayaru”, “Teekacharyaru” and “Teekakrutpadaru”, etc.

The Bullock of Destiny

Why was he born as a bullock?

After the great victory in the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas were recalling its episodes. In that moment of pride, Arjuna forgot Sri Krishna’s grace and boasted before Bhima that he alone was responsible for their triumph. Bhima rebuked him: “You speak like an animal, forgetting the Lord’s anugraha!”

The words of great souls never fail. Arjuna realized his ignorance, repented, but the curse had to bear fruit. Thus, he was destined to take birth as a beast. In the time of Srimadacharya

The Bullock Who Carried Wisdom

This was no ordinary bullock. For eighteen years, he carried the Sarvamoola Granthas from place to place, faithfully serving Acharya Madhwa. More than a beast of burden, he was a silent listener, absorbing every shastra as Acharya taught his disciples.

One day, when disciples asked who would write commentaries on his works, Acharya Madhwa declared: “Vyākhyāsyaty eṣṭa gorāṭ” – This very bullock shall write the commentaries.

The scholars were astonished, some even angered, and cursed the bullock to die of a serpent’s bite. Soon, the bullock suffered and died. But destiny was not defeated. That soul, purified by service and listening, was reborn as Dondu Raya, later to become Sri Jayatirtharu. In Madhwas they refer as Indra Avataram, Seshavesham. – so he is believed to Adisheshan Avataram.

The Awakening – “Kim Pashuḥ Pūrva Dehe?”

Years later, Akshobhya Tirtharu was searching for a worthy disciple. Sitting by the River Bheemarathi, he saw young Dondu Raya ride his horse into the river and drink water without using his hands. Astonished, he exclaimed: “Kim Pashuḥ Pūrva Dehe?” – Were you a beast in your previous birth?

At that instant, Dondu Raya remembered everything—his life as Arjuna, his bullock birth, his service to Acharya, his destiny. Overwhelmed, he bowed to Akshobhya Tirtharu and begged for Yati Ashrama. Despite family resistance, his surrender was complete, and he was initiated into ascetic life. Thus, the bullock of destiny became the sage of dialectics—Sri Jayatirtharu.

Awakening Under Akshobhya Tirtharu

In most of his granthas, he has praised his guru Akshobhya Tirtharu.

One day, Akshobhya Tirtharu saw young Dondu Raya drink water from the river while seated on his horse. He exclaimed: “Kim Pashuḥ Pūrva Dehe?” – Were you a beast in your previous birth? At that moment, Dondu Raya remembered it all—his life as Arjuna, his bullock birth, his service to Acharya. With tears, he surrendered and sought Yati Ashrama. Despite family resistance, his destiny prevailed, and under Akshobhya Tirtharu’s guidance, he became Jayatirtharu.

Miracles and Anugrahas

Canal of Blessings: With a handful of mud, he saved a village canal, ensuring water for generations.
Monkey’s Command: A monkey inscribed “Geetha” on a rock, directing him to write the Geetha Bhashya Teeka.

Healing the Prince: He cured Sultan Firozeshah’s son, but only after securing relief for oppressed Brahmins, attributing the miracle to Sri Ramachandra and Acharya Teeka Granthas on Madhwa Siddantha can be grouped into three., viz.,

a) Ancient Teekaas – i.e., for the period from Srimadacharya’s Badarikashrama pravesha to Sri Jayateertharu’s period ( 1317 to 1365AD)

b) Jayatheertharu’s Teekaas – Period 1365 to 1388

c) Arvaacheena Tippanees – After Jayatheertharu’s period till date.

Beyond commentaries, he authored 21 granthas, including original treatises like Pramana Paddhati (on epistemology) and Vadavali (on reality and illusion). His works are grouped across six prasthanas: Sutra, Geetha, Upanishad, Prakarana, Ruk, and Swatantra.

At Yeragola Cave, he wrote with patience and divine inspiration, receiving the blessings of Saraswati, Bharati Devi, and Sheshadevaru. His humility shines in his own words: “I am no master of grammar or logic—whatever I have written is only by the grace of my Guru.”

Legacy Eternal

Sri Jayatirtharu’s Brindavana is located at Malkhed (Malakhed), in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi district, on the banks of the Kagina river, close to the Brindavana of his guru Sri Akshobhya Tirtharu. Tradition holds it as the authentic resting place, though some later sources mention Nava Brindavana. Whether his vrundavana lies at Malkhed or Nava Brindavana, his spirit pervades every seeker of Dvaita. Later saints like Vyasatirtha, Raghavendra Tirtha, and Vadiraja Tirtha built upon his foundation. Scholars like Dasgupta affirm: “Jayatirtha and Vyasatirtha present the highest dialectical skill in Indian thought.”

Jayatirtharu is the Hanuman of Madhwa’s mission—humble in service, invincible in scholarship, eternal in devotion. From bullock cart to beacon of truth, his life reminds us that destiny bows before devotion, and intellect shines brightest when surrendered to the Guru.

What was the nature of this tradition? What accounts for its enduring dedication even in contemporary times? My curiosity prompted me to investigate the saga of Ponnar and Shankar, the valiant brothers of Kongu Nadu, whose narrative has been recounted for generations and persists in festivals, temples, and contemporary media platforms.

The Warrior Brothers of Kongu Nadu: Ponnar and Shankar
This is the story of two brothers whose names are known all over Kongu Nadu. Their narrative isn't just about battles and bravery; it's also about faith, sacrifice, and the unbreakable link of family.

Kolatha Gounder and his wife Pavathal lived in the village of Vaangal a long time ago. They prayed for a child for many years, showing their love to Goddess Madukarai Chelliamman. Finally, their prayers were fulfilled, and Kunnudaiya Gounder, also known as Nellian Kodan, and his wife Thamarai Nachiyar came from their family. But fate was terrible. Their pangalis, or parallel relatives, took over their ancestral territories, and the pair had to live with years of pain and persecution.

Thamarai and her husband went on pilgrimages to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu in order to make up for their sins. Their commitment paid off, and they were given children. The twins, Ponnar and Shankar, were born first, and then their sister, Arukkani Thangam, came right after them. individuals murmured that these guys were not normal individuals, but the reincarnations of Arjuna and Bhima, who had come back to life to bring justice.
The brothers learned Silambam and fencing as kids. They were powerful, brave, and smart, restoring their family's honour and becoming the rulers of Ponni Valanadu. Even though they were married, they opted to live celibate lives and devote themselves completely to the well-being of their people. Fairness, bravery, and protection were hallmarks of their rule.
But fate needed a big test. Thalaiyur Kaali, the Vettuva Gounder King, was their enemy. He was a staunch follower of Goddess Kaali. He called his men to him in Thalaiyur, where he was safe. The country shook as combat drew near. The fight between the Vellalars and the Vettuvas was so big that it shook the ground. The Neeli Valanadu Fort, with its walls and moats, is still a mute witness to that time of bravery.

Betrayal happened in the last fight at Veerapur. Some believe that Shankar fell because of the betrayal of a carpenter named Thattan, while others say that his wounds were too deep to heal. Ponnar, who was very sad, gave up his life in the battlefield. Arukkani, their sister, looked for their bodies even though she was distraught. Goddess Periyakandiamman gave her the power to bring them back for a short time so they could say goodbye. The brothers told her that their worldly tasks were done, and they went up to the holy realm. Arukkani couldn't take the loss, so she jumped into a well at Valanadu, sealing her fate with theirs.

Yet Sri Bhoomi Piratti, the presiding deity of the earth, was deeply troubled. She worried for Her children, bound in worldly suffering. Seeking deliverance for them, She asked the Lord for a path (Upaya). Narayana, holding Her tenderly on His lap, narrated the story of Nampaduvan in the village of Thirukkurungudi near Thirunelveli, assuring Her that salvation lies in singing His glory — Gana Rupa Upayam. The Kaisika Purana is the 48th chapter of the Varaha Purana and is traditionally referred to as “Kaisika Mahatyam”. The term “Kaishika Pann” denotes a tradition of singing hymns dedicated to the Almighty, set to a specific style of recitation accompanied by music. Similarly, there is a practice known as Naivalam, which is noted in Thirumangai Alwar’s pasurams.

The Tale of Nampaduvan and the Brahma Rakshasa

On the bright fortnight Dwadasi of the month of Krittika, Nampaduvan, a humble devotee, set out to the temple to sing hymns in the Kaisika raga. On his way, he was confronted by a starving Brahma Rakshasa, cursed to wander in ghostly torment. Nampaduvan, steadfast in devotion, was ready to surrender his body, believing that death would free him to reach the Lord. Yet he pleaded for time to fulfill his vow of singing. The Rakshasa refused, doubting his return. To prove his sincerity, Nampaduvan made 18 solemn oaths, invoking the gravest sins should he fail to return:

If I do not return as per my promise, let me get the sin of a man who is a liar.
Let me get the sin of a person who commits adultery, if I don’t return.
While eating in the company of a person, if a man differentiates in menu (serving inferior food to the guest), he gets a great sin. Let me get that sin, if I don’t return.
If a man donates a piece of land to a Brahmin and takes it back later, he accrues sin. Let me get that sin, if I don’t return.

A man who marries two women but favors one over the other accrues sin. Let me get that sin, if I don’t return.
If a man divorces his chaste wife who has no one to care for her, he accrues sin. Let me be equated to him, if I don’t return.
If a man obstructs thirsty cattle from drinking water, he accrues sin. Let me get that sin, if I don’t return.
Killing a Brahmin, addiction to liquor, stealing gold, breaking a vow — these are heinous crimes. Let me suffer all these punishments, if I fail to return.
If some people worship only other deities and not Sri Vasudeva, they accrue sin. Let me get that sin, if I don’t return.
Sriman Narayana is the supreme deity, the inner soul of all beings. If a man equates Him with other angels bound by karma, he will be born again and again. Let me get that sin, if I break my promise.

Although these oaths remain the same, their acceptance and adherence differ today from the belief system of the period of Nampaduvan.

It was this 18th oath that convinced the Rakshasa, for it was considered the greatest sin of all. The number 18 itself carries sacred weight — the 18 chapters of the Bhagavad Gita, the 18 Puranas, the 18-day Kurukshetra war. In this tradition, eighteen represents completeness, the totality of dharma and cosmic truth.

The Vigil and Return

Nampaduvan sang through the night, keeping vigil as prescribed for Ekadasi. At dawn, he surrendered to the Lord and hurried back to the Rakshasa, his heart filled with joy at keeping his promise. On the way, he was stopped by a stranger who warned him against returning to a cruel cannibal. But Nampaduvan, resolute, refused to break his word. The stranger was none other than Sri Varaha Himself, testing his devotion.

The Liberation of the Rakshasa

Nampaduvan offered his body, but the Rakshasa, recalling his past life, refused. He revealed that he was once a Brahmin named Somasarma, who had erred gravely during a sacrifice and was cursed into Rakshasa form.

Moved by Nampaduvan’s devotion, the Rakshasa begged for the merit of his songs. Nampaduvan sternly refused, but out of compassion granted him the merit of one hymn sung in the Kaisika raga. That single hymn liberated the Rakshasa, who was reborn into a Vaishnava family and ultimately attained Vaikunta.

According to one version, it is said that, Thirumangai Azhwar,(8-9th Century CE) himself sang his ‘Thirunedum Thaandakam’ and performed Abhinaya (facial expressions and bodily movements) during the month of Karthikai in front of the Utsava image (Processional Deity) at the Sri Rangam temple. He requested the Lord that the verses from Thiruvaazimozhi of Nammazhwar be recited on Vaikunta Ekadasi day, during the Adhyayana Utsava. The image of Nammazhwar was brought from his native, Azhwar Thirunagari (Thirunelveli) and his disciple Mathurakavi Azhwar sang the hymns and performed.

Araiyar Sevai consists of the following Kondattam, Pashuram singing, Dramatization of Certain episodes and Muthukkuri. Let’s look into them one by one.

Kondattam

These are brief expressions celebrating the glory of Perumal and Thayar (Nachiyar). The phrases for Thayar conclude with the term ...Nachiaar, while those for perumal finish with the term ...Perumaal. Some phrases are recited for both Thayar and Perumal. A Mangalam is typically recited following this. This collection of phrases concludes with ...Mangalam, and the final one will finish with ...Mangalaaamee. The Araiyar Swamigal keeps the rhythm going with his cymbals. Listening to the Kondattam, with its unique rhythm and melody, is truly a divine experience that leaves one wanting to hear it repeatedly. This service to the Divya Dampathis is provided on multiple occasions throughout various festivals, not limited to just Adyayana Utsavam. Araiyar Swamigal may occasionally sing songs in praise of the lord using simple language accompanied by thalam. Pallupattu is the term used for these songs.

Pashuram singing, Abhinayam, and explanation

These services are held during Thiruadyayana utsavam. On specific days, the Araiyar Swamigal performs a set of pasurams, singing them with cymbals and performing abhinayam to express their meaning using hand gestures, leg steps, and body/facial gestures. These motions are subtle and sparse, unlike Natyam. The Araiyar swamigal may walk forward, backward, or sideways. The TampirAn-padi commentary explains pasurams. At Srirangam, Srilliputtur, and Azhwar Thirunagari, pasurams are chosen according to temple history and tradition. To demonstrate, it will be demonstarted and described described as a pattern at Srivilliputtur on Nammazhwar Moksham day. The Araiyar Swamigal will read Muthukkuri in front of the processional diety at the chintamani chettiar mandapam on the outside prakaram of the Andal temple on this day (or night). He will sing a pasuram with Thalam, do abhinayam, retrace a few steps, and stop. The Kainkaryaparars with the pallaku go forward a few paces (Araiyar Swamigal faces Perumal and thayar, causing him to move back and them forward) before stopping. Araiyar Swamigal will perform abhinayam and sing another pasuram. Repeat several times, reciting one pasuram and doing abhinayam each time. Both Araiyar Swamigal and Perumal will reach Sannidhi this way. Pasurams from Nachiyar Thirumozhi include Sindura cempodi (Thirumaalirumsolai pasuram), Menn Nadai annam pirandhu Vilaydum (Srivilliputtur pasuram), and Ranganatha Perumal pathu. Kamsa is killed on the 4th day of pahal pathu and Vamana Avatharam on the 7th at SriRangam. In this sevai, the Kattuvici (soothsayer) uses pearls to forecast the future and good fortune of the love-lorn lady (Nayaki). This is done on the ninth day of pahal pathu in Srirangam, the 10th day in Azhwar Thirunagari, and three times in Srivilliputtur during Margazhi, Thai, and Adi Masams, once the Temple vehicle reaches its Nilay following Thiruvadipooram.

This inscription highlights that the Thiruvaimozhi Pasurams are sung in the morning for Nam Perumal as Thiruppalliyeluchi. A 13th Century inscription from Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple at Kanchipuram mentions 22 people as Thiruvinnappam Seivar, called Araiyars.
