Q&A with US based Post Production Director/ Sound Designer, Carlos ‘Storm’ Martinez about his experience with the Internationally Acclaimed film LIFE! CAMERA ACTION…

How much of sound design according to you has helped Life! Camera Action… to grow?

Sound design in the creative sense I’m not sure made the film grow as much as ADR, foley and mixing did. It’s not like Star Wars where we created any iconic sounds. What we did was recreate the NYC sound scape that supports the story. Once that world was in place, you could watch the story and be in there with Reina. Any movie that has crappy sound is going to panned by the average consumer and most people won’t take it serious. So we really focused on getting all of the real life things in there but nothing that would stand in the way of the story’s dialog.

How were you able to decide the mixing ideas?

Of course, Rohit was really supportive of what I thought and gave me a lot of freedom to do my thing. It can be hard when you have people standing over you’re shoulder asking you, “what’s that sound for?” The whole film for us was about conveying the characters emotions so the mix was really important to what the audience experienced. Where dialog should be compared to music, ambience, etc.

The beginning of the film has a beautiful feel to it, how did you come up with that?

Going for the “less is more” strategy-we were always looking for the simplest way to express the story.

You have worked on several films, how was the experience working on Life! Camera Action…especially a movie not your native 1st or 2nd language?

The 2nd language was a lot in the beginning but after a few meeting and lots of phone calls with Rohit I got to really know the characters and what each scene was trying to express. Once I understood that the language thing wasn’t that big of a deal. During ADR it came back again because I really needed help from Rohit and Ravi-checking sync, making sure pronunciation was correct. The fact that we dubbed everything actually turned out to be a plus since we didn’t have to worry about anything matching original lines because there weren’t any. Plus I learned some Hindi/Punjabi words and I know the hand sign for “Restroom please.”

How did you come onboard to do Life! Camera Action…? How was your experience?

I met Rohit thru an AD. We spoke once on the phone then met in person. He hired me a few days later and that was the start of the journey.

According to you how much of a role does post production played in the creation of Life Camera Action…?

Pretty serious as the entire thing is dubbed. So that process plus organizing color correction, subtitles, online etc. became a good amount of work. The story was there with the script that Rohit came up with but I think that the movie became what the audience is seeing now during post. Before that it just wouldn’t have stood up against other films form a production stand point.

What did the post production process entail?

Color correction on the one hand, Audio on the other. Score on the other. Keeping everyone on the same page so that deadlines were manageable and realistic. This was a pretty small group of people doing a lot of things, all at the same time. Sean was doing color at Postworks and a set schedule so that we could time the end of sound and score together and be ready for mixing against the color corrected picture. This also meant that everything (ADR, Foley, etc.) could have no hiccups without knocking everything off track. Add to that we had actors from LA, one from India who all had multiple scenes to do. Keeping everything on schedule was probably the hardest part of the entire process.

What do you think are the reasons for success of Life! Camera Action…

Reina follows her bliss, just like Rohit and the rest of us do.

Tell us about your experience while collaborating in Life! Camera Action…

Really eye’s and ears opening experience! If you watch the film there’s probably two scenes that have location audio. 85% of the film is dubbed! ADR, foley, sound design ambiences were all added after the fact. It was a pretty big job considering my crew at the time was 4 people. This really show’s what a small group of focused people can do when they need to.

Rohit shared that you were amazing in terms of your commitment and planning. In spite of your wife expecting a baby in the last week of completing the film, your focus and commitment was unwavered. What drove you to do that?

OCD! Just kidding. If you say you’re going to get something done, then do it. Seems pretty simple on paper but if you focus you can do it in real life. Back in the music days of mixing all night for a morning deadline, it was the same thing. You either got the record finished, and they hired you again, or you didn’t get the record finished and they insert whatever bad things you’d like here.

We heard you are a Grammy nominated musician. How did this transition to movie happen?

Engineer actually-I’ve known so many great musicians that I don’t call myself one. Movie transition happened accidentally when I moved to NYC. The scene died in Philly so I needed to move somewhere I could work and support myself and family. Once I got to NYC I answered a Craigslist ad for some needing a short film mixed. I thought “If I can mix a record, I can mix a film.”

After getting the project files from the producer, I erased everything they had in there and did all of the sound again—After hearing everything they told me I was the sound designer as well! As a music engineer we read the manuals to all of the latest effects boxes so that we can manipulate sound in any way possible, the problem is that most musicians don’t want their sounds manipulated that much but in film world where someone hands you a dream sequence that’s silent and say “bring this to life” I get to have real fun with noise tweaking.

Do you still do music?

Very little outside of the film projects we work on. I miss it sometimes but those days are gone. I love what I’m doing now so I don’t mope around about it like some music biz 90’s all star.

What is your advice to aspirants?

Learn all you can, there’s more out there then you think you know. Try ideas, you never know what will work. Stick with it-to quote Joseph Campbell “Follow your bliss.”

Last but not least – How did the middle name ‘Storm’ happen?

Nickname comes from back in the break-dancing days. It’s been my “name” since I was about 19 years old.

It seems you made the dubbing of the entire film complete with 15 actors in simply 4 days. What's your secret?

Hard working actors and director. A lot of food deliveries and stamina on everyone’s part. On planning side, we did a really detailed spotting session at the dub stage-so we knew exactly what we needed to get. Scheduling came into play with picking which actors came on which days. The experienced ones flew thru it and the not so experienced ones were a little slower. Everyone really had to focus hard though, Actors had to redo entire scenes, director had to listen and approve all performances, engineer had to stay awake. Another thing that helped us was the fact that a lot of Indian shows/movies are totally dubbed-so the actors came into the situation prepared for that, It wasn’t something new and strange it was the way things were done.

What is your favorite software for sound editing? And why?

Pro Tools, I’ve been using it since I was 25. It’s the standard for editorial and music. It does everything I need it to do.

What do you recommend to do or ways, for someone who simply wants to try their hand at Sound design and music production.

Just start doing some film school projects or whatever else you can get our hands on. Everyone starts somewhere and you have to learn the basics as well as have a body of work that you can show directors. There are a few good books out there that will give you some basics and lingo but I would think the best thing to do would be to get a film and start playing with it.

Newcomer Sarrtaj impresses all

A lot of newcomers come and go in this industry but very few are able to sustain. One of them is the young dashing Punjab Da Puttar, Sarrtaj Gill. Sarrtaj made his debut in the much acclaimed film, Khap. Many from the Industry also say that this young lad has a striking resemblance to the dynamic Ranbir Kapoor.

“Acting was always my priority and I realized that when I had my first camera facing experience. Where people feel shy or nervous facing the camera, I instead felt all the more energetic and challenging. I enjoyed each and every moment of it”, says Sarrtaj.

Sarrtaj was selected after the makers searched for the lead actor for a period of five months. Sarrtaj is already quite famous in the world of ad and has done innumerous of them, Fanta with Rani Mukherjee, Mango Slice, Maruti Swift, LG Phone, Tata Indicom, Coke Cola to name a few.

“I always loved modeling and the ad I did but my priority was always acting in a movie. It was my dream to become an established actor. Anil Kapoor revisits the iconic character, Lakhan for the Grand Finale of Entertainement Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega

Mumbai, 11 August 2011: Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega (season 4) concluded packed with a big talent and high voltage performance. Anil Kapoor lent his star power to the finale. Wizcraft Television, the producer and conceptualizer of Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega pulled out all the stops for the finale episode with a variety of acts including the usage of magic, acrobats, etc.. Anil Kapoor and with co-judges, Farah Khan and Anu Malik were taken in by all the acts.

Anil Kapoor graced the show disguised as a magician prior to the act by star magician, Raj who later invited the star to be a part of his act making Kapoor vanish. A few seconds later the set echoed to the music of “My name is Lakhan” wherein Anil Kapoor performed to the classic song. Amongst all the unprecedented performances the act that was the one put on by the Raiveshi Group from Bengal. Sheers dedication and hard work enabled them to perform an acrobatic act. This heartfelt acrobatic act brought Farah and host, Mona Singh’s to tears. This patriotic act moved and touched all three judges. So taken by the act, Farah Khan commented that she would be happy to have her daughter become a gymnast, graceful and flawless.

Nominations for the 2^nd Chevrolet Global Indian Music Academy (GIMA) Awards announced

FIRST LOOK Bas Ek Tamanna to release this Eid

Spark Films Entertainment brings its Eid offering, Bas Ek Tamanna, a beautiful Muslim social. Produced by Subhan Aziz, and directed by Rahul Kapoor, Bas Ek Tamanna. Based in the cultural city of Lucknow and contrasting it with the high society life of Dubai, the film opens in Lucknow, with a Middle-Class Muslim Family of three, where the mother, Najma (Reema Lagoo) is the sole earner and wishes to go for Hajj with her self-earned money, an ailing husband, Nadeem (SM Zaheer) restricted to the wheelchair and their son, Faraaz (Sameer Aftab) works as a part time guide, till he bags a proper job.

Faraaz on is on his normal spree as a guide with a few school kids and a sweet gesture of his, is noticed by a lady, who had just come to Lucknow from Dubai, Sameera (Rituparna Sengupta). She is new to the place & likes the sweetness in this young guide.

She opts for him to show her around the place. Faraaz spends the next few days with Sameera explaining her about the various historic monuments in Lucknow. She admires him all the more after they spend some time together.

Her trip is about to end and just before leaving she gets to know that Faraaz was looking for a job. She thus thinks & throws him an offer – not knowing whether he would agree to go with her to Dubai on that.

To her pleasant surprise Faraaz agrees to help her out. Thus she pays him a hefty advance & heads back to arrange for the visas & the other formalities. But he never mentions the truth to his family, as to what his job in Dubai was going to be and with whom.

Faraaz’s life changes after this proposal. Things are looking up for him & happiness flows from all angles. This is the time where he comes across the love of his life, Sanah (Gauri Karnik) a teacher in the local school.

Parents are happy for the both of them and agree to get them engaged before Faraaz left for his job in Dubai. Little do they know the nature of the job as he had hidden the fact that a lady, had offered him a job of a complex nature.

Faraaz gets engaged to Sanah and also comes the time when Faraaz has to leave for Dubai. He still keeps his secrecy & heads towards the place that was going to change his destiny. He is welcomed in Dubai by Sameera, who takes him to a big hospital to start his journey. Here we introduce a six-year-old kid sitting in a psychiatric ward playing with toys, breaking dolls from the neck & hanging them on the noose. This kid is Ahmed (Master Laeeque).

Sameera is a single parent, a very well settled business woman, but a girl with a haunting past. The doctor explains the situation to Faraaz. Letting him know that the kid was a patient of The Bipolar Disorder, a psychiatric disorder normally found in children with unnatural parental death. This starts with destructive tantrums in kids his age & leads to suicidal tendencies, at a later stage. Sameera here explains that Faraaz should think once before they reached home because her husband had committed suicide due to inferiority complex & the kid was unaware of it – Ahmed now needed a normal father, so as to avoid medication at a later stage. Sameera couldn’t ever remarry due to her poignant past & thus needed a guy who could be trusted as the father to her son.

Faraaz agrees to go ahead with the contract she had made. Papers are signed & Faraaz enters Sameera’s house as Ahmed’s father. Time passes and Ahmed becomes fond of Faraaz. Sameera is happy that her decision was correct & so was her selection. Both Sameera & Faraaz become good friends acting as husband & wife in front of the kid.

But with passing time Faraaz’s attitude towards his loved ones back in India changes & his involvement in Dubai & his changed lifestyle makes him gradually forget his past. Sameera, unaware of his past likes his involvement in her son & treats Faraaz with all the good things life there could offer. This makes him love the life he was now leading & wants to forget the past fully.

On one end, Faraaz tastes the best things life could offer & on the other end his family & loved ones in India suffer. He gradually changes his contacts in order refrain from lying all the time & starts to feel that the money he had sent was enough to fill up his loss to the family. Absolutely unaware, that in the course of time his father succumbs to his ailments. Time flies & Faraaz & Sameera are happy with Ahmed oblivious of the condition of Faraaz’s family after the death of his father.

But a day comes when Faraaz gets the news of his father’s death & holds Sameera responsible for hiding it from him, in fear of losing the father to her son. This hurts Sameera, who blasts out & reminds Faraaz that nothing but him had changed & he was equally responsible for the sorry state of his family & lets him leave if he wanted to.

Faraaz is back with his mother & Sanah, still hiding the life he spent in Dubai & normalcy prevails once again. But Sameera faces a tough time with Ahmed, who now is all the more figity & wants his father back in his life. She is compelled to give in to his demands.

Under pressure she decides to settle in Lucknow knowing nothing about Faraaz & his life back home. She wants to give it a shot talking to him & trying to get back happiness in Ahmed’s life.

She comes back to Lucknow & admits Ahmed in the best school there – but this happens to be the place where Sanah teaches & all three meet. The worst part comes up when Faraaz too lands up at the same place & Ahmed runs to hug him – Sameera too is happy to find him there, as she was looking all around for Faraaz.

What happens from here on & how Sameera manages to break the ice so as to restore the peace in the lives of the lovers is what sums up the storyline, the end being a very positive & unique one...

The storyline goes thus...
An aircraft takes off from the small, picturesque Gaggal Airport, tucked away in the Himalayas. Inside the packed craft, sit   Pooja
(Sasha goradia), a beautiful young newly married girl... and her husband Rahul (Jagrat Desai), a handsome young man. On the seat in front of them sits a rather nervous looking, small town young man, Jai (Vinay Pathak).
Barely has the aircraft taken off when Rahul and Pooja begin to fight....a this small 'spark' spreads like a jungle wild fire , injuring
one pilot and   forcing the other to turn the flight back to Gaggal!
At the airport, the harrowed passengers are told that there are no spare pilots in the small town and that all of them will have to wait
2 days for the next flight.The livid passengers demand an enquiry into who began the fight. Pooja and Rahul think it is best to escape
before the mob turns violent. They sneak out and are about to get away in their motor home parked outside the airport when the passenger side door opens and in slides Jai!
He demands that they drive him to Shimla .... right away! Drive to Shimla? Is he crazy? That's 15 hours away! But Jai will listen to no
excuses. The flight got cancelled because of their fight and now it is their responsibility to make sure he reaches on time.
Horrified, Pooja and Rahul try to argue but Jai whips out a gun...ending all arguments! Now begins the mad race to ensure that the
odd trio, a warring husband-wife and a 'local' with a gun,   reach Shimla by 4 pm -- a Herculean task by any standard.
As the journey continues, through a series of flashbacks, we get to know of the hilarious story of Rahul and Pooja.... Inter woven into
this is the equally hilarious story of the gun toting man and his girl...Muskaan (Riya Sen).

Shot in the heartland of the mighty Himalayas, it's lush, green valleys, it's torrid streams, its cold desert mountains.... The zigzag
roads of the high mountain roads make the ride all the more exciting!

Director Ashok Nanda decided to cast Meghna Naidu for the role of an ugly girl in Rivaaz, path-breaking film that exposes the traidition of family prositution in Indian villages that exists even today. Megha Naidu, shocked by the actual bytes and footages, immediately expressed her consent to act in the film yo jelp the cause.

But on the first day of shoot, when Meghna walked in for the shot, Ashok Nanda asked her to go and wash off her make-up. "But I haven't worn any," said Meghna. "You ahd told me to come without make-up." Shrugs the director, "she just would not look ugly without make-up. I had to get make-up done to make her look ugly."

Now that is one compliment Meghna Naidu would always remember.

Mumbai: We have all heard stories of men having the pleasure of three wives or those who brag of having more than one girlfriend. We have also come across stories where the poor wife under constant pressure from her husband was forced to end her marriage. Well in the next two episodes of ‘Gajab Desh Ki Ajab Kahaaniyaan’ on Imagine TV all this will sound as if a myth.

Rakhi’s first guest on Friday -Shweta was quite a lot to handle…Rakhi standards!! A rather bold women who had, not one but three boyfriends at the same time and called them all.. “timepass”. The three guys who knew this fact, with the help of the show, wanted to bring all this to a rather Ajab end!! On Saturday it was the turn of a husband to narrate his Gajab kisa. A demanding wife, who wanted nothing but the best in life and expected her husband to get the ‘Chand’ and ‘Taare’ zameen par. But what came down with a bang onto the sets of ‘Gajab Desh Ki Ajab Kahaaniyaan’ was Khajormal - a 50 year old stunt man. To know more tune into Imagine TV this Friday and Saturday at 10:00pm.

It took six hours for choreographer Shabina Khan to create history

Six hours, that’s a one of a kind record. Choreographer Shabina Khan recently created history in Bollywood item song choreography. She shot the famous song ‘Chandigarh Ki Star from Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap in a record time of 6 hours. A Vishal-Shekhar musical duo composition, this song stars Raveena Tandon who made a comeback on the big screen after a long hibernation. This item number was a last minute addition to the film.

“The film’s director Puri Jagannath had given me just one day to complete it and I choreographed it in a record time of six hours, which was next to impossible. The song consists of 25 dancers. I’ve used two sets of costume and make-up changes. Then the lighting had to be taken care of. After completing the shoot, it took the production team another six hours to edit it, says Shabina who is famous for her extreme commitment towards her work.

Item numbers, a new trend off late, have become the modus operendi for upping a film’s stability. It generally takes 3-4 days to shoot them. Coincidentally, Raveena also happens to be a close friend of Shabina, who has previously worked as an assistant with choreographer Ganesh Acharya.

“Raveena had no clue on who the choreographer was and when she found out that I was choreographing the song, she jumped with excitement. In fact, it was Raveena who pushed me to become a choreographer,” says Shabina, who first worked with Raveena in the actor’s 2005 movie Pehchaan.

He visited the Stud farm and was delighted to meet his good friend aka Superstud, Ashmit Patel after a long time.

Soon after they met, Ashmit introduced Emraan to the contestants, who were equally excited to interact with him. While introducing him Ashmit proclaimed “Emraan is the original stud and the boys should look up to him and definitively note down the tips given by him”.

When asked about his views about this show and what he thinks of the opportunity given to the boys, Hashmi commented, “The concept of the show is very novel and it’s the first time in India that such a show has been showcased. It was Raksha bandhan time on the sets of Beendh Banoonga Ghodi Chadhunga. But actor Anuj Thakur took the moment a step further by actually getting his brothers Madhav Deochakke and Ankit Arora to contribute and buy gifts for their sisters Rishina and Mehendi Jain. The girls were touched at the gesture. Sweets were ordered and there was fun time on the sets before everyone got serious and got back to shoot.

Says an elated Anuj, “we have spent so much time together that it feels like a family. I wanted to actually get the gifts for my sisters and so did Madhav and Ankit.”

When questioned whether he would do the same during his mock wedding becoming the beend, he blushes, “how many times can an actor get married? But when it comes to sisters, we brothers do get emotional. After all, we shoot together for 30 days a month.”

Mumbai, August 10, 2011: Tata Motors today launched the Tata Aria 4x2, a luxurious creation with the finesse of a sedan and the muscle of an SUV all combined in one car with 4x2 option.

The Tata Aria is already available in four-wheel drive, launched in October 2010. The Tata Aria 4x2 extends the range to new segments and redefines several benchmarks with its design and technologies, offering class leading features that take comfort, and convenience to a new height.

According to Mr. P M Telang, Managing Director – India Operations, Tata Motors, "As the first Indian 4x4 crossover, the Tata Aria has broken a new path for Tata Motors. With the introduction of the Aria 4x2, we make the range comprehensive. The pleasure of the Aria, combining the finesse of a sedan with the muscle of an SUV, can now be availed by a larger customer segment."

The Aria’s styling is a blend of bold proportions, uncluttered lines and uncompromising aesthetics. The aggressive, well planted stance is tempered by a lunging silhouette and a dynamic roofline. Wraparound dual barreled headlamps complement the signature Tata grille. Chrome detailing on the sides accentuates its premium class. The interiors reflect the same richness and elegance in design, layout, and visual appeal. Premium leather upholstery enhances richly textured trims in single or dual tone themes. Air-conditioning louvers on pillars and a sweeping row of roof utility spaces add to the distinctive appeal.

Passengers can simply walk into the Aria, rather than having to climb up or get down into the cabin. The three-row theatre style flexible seating ensures ample space. Like the driver’s and the front passenger seat, the second row seats can also be slid fore and aft to increase legroom. The Aria’s stylish design is inlaid with the DNA of an SUV, manifested in its stance, power, driveability and safety.

Its 2.2 litre Direct Injection Common Rail (DICOR) engine, with variable turbine technology and 32-bit ECU delivers 140 PS power and 320 Nm torque. It is equipped with a dual mass flywheel which isolates torsional vibrations from the powertrain, thus providing a NVH free environment in the cabin. The new Mark II gearbox is perfectly mated to the engine ensuring smooth power delivery and precise shifting.

The suspension is designed to achieve an optimal balance between ride comfort and control and stability, both on normal roads and in offroading. Its low-roll characteristics and higher soaking capacity further ensure a sedan-like ride quality and SUV-like offroading capability.

The Aria boasts of best in class safety features, making it one of the safest cars on Indian roads. The Aria’s frame is constructed with advanced hydroformed members. Hydroforming enhances their rigidity while reducing weight. Besides, the body shell has crumple zones and the doors have side impact bars. Dual airbags (driver, front passenger) ensure complete safety. Besides India, the Aria satisfies all current crash safety norms in European markets.

The Tata Aria 4x2 is being launched in three trim levels – the Aria Prestige at the top end, the Aria Pleasure and the Aria Pure.

The Tata Aria 4x2 range will be available from Rs. 11.85 lakh onwards (ex-showroom, Mumbai). The Tata Aria range along with the 4x2 range is being made available, in 85 cities through 150 Showrooms in phase 1.

RAKHI SAWANT’S WEIGHTY GOLDEN METAL AFFAIR IN ‘RAKTBEEJ’

Rakhi Sawant who has just finished an item numer for Om Sai Jyoti Films in association with Rising Swell Production’s ‘Raktbeej’ in a 3 day spell had to fulfill an unusual wish of a choreographer of the film.

As confided by the producer Rajesh Mukul and director Anil Ballani, both debutants, in unison, “We had to shoot this item number for our film ‘Raktbeej’. So we consulted Rakhi Sawant who proved very sporting in accepting our offer and then when we suggested 3 costume change, one of which was a golden, metal embedded, ghagra choli weighing 60 kgs instantly agreed to comply with our request and suggested her friend Choreographer Shabina Khan’s name to do the song who in turn suggested the name of another one of her friend fashion designer Reza’s name. Finally everything went well and we canned the song in a 3 day spell in Filmistan Studio. Although Rakhi was very uncomfortable due to the weight she finished the song with a smile on her lips inspite of almost fainting 3 – 4 times on the sets.” They concluded.

The film stars debutants Maanas, K. Jeeva, Amanjyot, Juliya & Tinu Anand. The rest of the cast, including the leading lady, is still under finalization. The other credits of the film are music Satish Ajay, DOP by Akula Raja and action by Dragon Prakash.

Anurag: Working on intense films with Kalki takes a toll on our relation

They began as a director and actor and delivered an excellent output in 2009’s hit Dev D. Then came the brilliant Shaitan which was produced under his banner. And now, Anurag Kashyap has donned the Director’s cap again and is back with his actress wife Kalki Koechlin in the internationally acclaimed movie, “That Girl in Yellow Boots”.

Though their association has been a successful one always, Anurag says that this would be his last intense movie with his wife. “Yes I am very serious about it. I won’t work with Kalki again till the time I have a lighter romantic film for her. When we work on intense films, our relationship gets very intense. It takes a toll on our personal interactions.” Besides this, he also added that the chances of creative clashes are high while working on the same project, and convincing the other becomes difficult at times.

This again stresses out their relation. And for them, their relation is more important than anything else. So they decided to keep their relation safe by avoiding working together.

Anurag also clarified that he doesn’t add a special character in the script only to include his wife in the project. In fact he includes Kalki only if the script has a character that suits her. To support this claim, we have his next film “Gangs of Wasseypur” which does not have his wife in it, since the script did not require any character that suited Kalki.

But as of now, we have our eyes set on TGIYB. After winning hearts internationally, we hope this movie does the same in India too.

In session about his experience in the Internationally Acclaimed film LIFE! CAMERA ACTION…

Ravi, you are involved in the Editing/ Cinematography/ Publicity Design/ overall production of Life! Camera Action…Did you have any formal training and/or experience to wear different hats?

Yeah. I had a formal training in Filmmaking with a few experiences in making films mostly in independent movies. While working in those indie’s, you get a chance to work in different departments of Filmmaking because of the limited available resources including crew members. Since all the departments in Filmmaking is connected together and comes under one roof, like a part and a whole, I learnt more about other departments then the desired one which will eventually pave the way to the whole. That’s the beauty in it. In the long run, you will know exactly what is supposed to be done. Ultimately, the result that you were looking for is not in the papers but within you.

Being the only 2^nd one of the 2 member crew in the making of this film, how do you feel about that?

It was different. Sometimes easy and kind of annoying few times. Since we were the only two member crew, we had to segregate roles & responsibilities and fixing decisions upon ourselves. But if you love what you do, It feels great about it even if it the toughest job one might ever do.

What roles did you play and how?

I played DP, Production Designer, Production photographer, Publicity design and few more things in pieces.

How did you meet Rohit? What made you decide to commit and stay on it until the completion?

(Laughs) That might be tough to understand. Technically we met through the Internet, but I would say, accidentally, by coincidence, unintentionally or even by mistake! (Laughs) I’m still trying to find the right word, but guess this was destined!

Given that we both wanted to make films or at least to do something in favor of films, and because Rohit is also works at the same pace (maximum), I decided to commit. So once committed, it is a must to stay in it till the end. However it is a universal law!

You shot on DVX 100 in a world of technological explosion, how does it feel to have shot on a standard definition as compared to High Definition?

The foremost thing to be considered is the budget, compatibility and accessibility. We had limited budget and were seeking for compatible things for production and the camera DVX 100 was very accessible at that moment. Still I might don’t have crew members while production but it is best to adopt the simpler means.

Furthermore, in the end all that matters is what will be seen on the screen. Doesn’t matter where, when and how you shot. All that matters is the final output. Still things can also be done in the post production, which we did.

Also by adopting this approach it is lot more easier in post production process and this has the simple workflow ever.

Of course the Standard Definition quality can never be matched with High Definition, as I said earlier, budget, compatibility and accessibility. We had to rethink those three again and again.

Again the success of the movie not depends on the technical qualifications but with the story and the script. End of story! (Laughs)

What does movie making means to you?

It might take few days for me to answer this question! I have a huge essay about this! But the bottom line is, it’s infinite!

It’s seems artificial lighting was hardly used in Life! Camera action…How do you shoot a scene without lights and still communicate to the viewer without distracting them?

We barely used lights in this movie. There are both indoors and outdoors scenes and technically there won’t be any issues in shooting outdoors but usually the problem will be in indoors. Not all the available lights will give a good exposure and few will even destroy the quality of the movie by giving different color balance and bad skin tone.

To avoid this, especially for the indoor shooting, we choose locations which is best suited for proper exposure overall for the camera and also which matches the scene mood. We were very particular that those shouldn’t affect the story structure.

Also the scene could be composed in many or a particular way by positioning the actors in a particular way with some cinematic rules so that it can be done in a perfect way.

You have been Nominated for the ‘Best Art direction’ in the US, how does it feel?

It always feels good. Art direction is considered as a backbone in the production process since it defines the mood and communicates visually by physical means. Nominated outside the home country itself is unique and this is amazing…

What are your favorite scenes/parts in the movie?

My favorite scenes in the movie by technical means, when Reina and Simi (referred by character names in the movie), meet up in the restaurant scene after a long time and since after their graduation day. That scene has a soft yellow tone which enhances the mood of that situation where they’ve been communicating internally between themselves. This scene is one of the plot points which serve a lot later in the movie.

Another scene is when Reina have a meeting with Terri, a producer by her professor’s recommendation. There too we shot in available light with sunlight coming through the one side of the window where the main character is placed in such a way the sunlight hits her. Again for cinematic reasons, such composition was quickly decided on the spot.

Again the montage shots in both songs, which tells the story of Reina and her life in a very different way with lots of color and locations. I guess this montage and songs are everybody’s favorite.

Rohit shared that you were with him in the process till the end. What were your expectations and what drove you to do that?

When you start some sort of any activity, whatever it may, it is important to believe in that and just by doing the work and not expecting the results. Keeping in mind that the goal is one, and when the work is done there will be a result and that’s exciting.

We didn’t have any expectations initially but once you expect something, the progress is limited.

We both were solid from the beginning in just finishing the movie without a break by using all the available resources that we could gather. And in the end, the result – LIFE! CAMERA ACTION…

Since you have worked for a brief period in India earlier, what do you think of your experience working in the US?

Working in the US is an amazing experience. Because of the multicultural land and with the largest movie industry and most importantly the independent film making opportunities readily available to anyone is the core. The concept of recognition for the emerging filmmakers is huge. Film festivals all over the country are the best choices available to gain the credits for the work that has been done.

The way you and Rohit made this film with a 2 member crew, do you think the same could be achieved in India? If yes, how? And if not why?

Yes it can be achieved anywhere. Though it is not possible in the mainstream movie making but for the independent filmmaking. Since independent filmmaking is solely dependent on the story and the script, a successful output can be produced without relying on the technical aspects.

Here the important thing to be considered is the individual. When you have the potential and trust in yourselves, nothing can stop you from moving forward. Hence, all that matters is the belief of your own.

So if the above is achieved, it’s done.

Do you think one needs to have a special acquired skill to work with the camera?

Yes! One needs to have some skills to work with the camera but only to an extent. It is a combination of physical and creative process. The physical learning can be achieved by some means but not the creative. Once the techniques and the operation of the camera are learnt, there is no more in it. Even the knowledge of the new technology can be updated quickly once you know the base.

But what is going to be shot is exclusive. Each and every creative process of shooting is affected by various processes and it has no end. Sometimes it is even made by the psychological aspects of the viewer. But still it is important to update the newest technologies that emerge.

Marathi film ‘Faqta Ladh Mhana’ is 1^st film in 2011 to screen on 100 UFO Digital theatres

UFO’s satellite technology gives fresh lease of life to Marathi and regional cinema

The first and only Marathi film to screen on 100 UFO digital theatres in 2011 is Mahesh Manjrekar-produced Marathi film ‘Faqta Ladh Mhana’ (Source: www.ufomoviez.com) during the first week of release; viz., August 4-11. Only 2 other Marathi films last year– Paaaradh (in August 2010), Ideachi Kalpana (in December 2010) – in 2009 and 2010 screened on 100 plus UFO Digital Cinema. UFO Moviez has helped increase the number of Marathi film playing theatres from 59 in 2006 to 290 in 2010 and 272 as of August 5, 2011. In 2007-2008, there is a significant jump in Marathi playing theatres on UFO Digital systems. The number of Marathi film releases on UFO digital system has increased from 11 in 2006 to 68 in 2010 and 41 as of August 5, 2011. A grand total of 206 Marathi films have been released on the UFO Digital system as of August 5, 2011.

UFO Moviez, the world’s single largest networked digital cinema platform, is helping to revive Marathi and regional cinema in India through its unique satellite based delivery model to theatres across India and beyond metros. Director Sanjay Jadhav’s first big-budget and multistarrer Marathi film, ‘Faqta Ladh Mhana’, which talks about the corruption in the political system and has actor Sachin Khedekar playing the lead as a corrupt politician with some of the best actors of the Marathi film industry, will screen on 100 out of the 2,500 UFO Digital theatres of UFO Moviez, the world’s single largest networked digital cinema platform. UFO Moviez has revolutionized the way films are distributed and exhibited throughout India through its pioneering technology, infrastructure and unique pay per show business model, bringing in a 'First Day First Show' regime for film distributors and cinema owners.

UFO is already present in Nepal and is actively looking at markets like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Middle East countries and Latin American and East European regions among others for both DCI and Non DCI rollout.

Sachin returns to Rajshri Productions (P) Ltd. with their forthcoming film ‘Jaana Pehchana’.

Sachin hardly needs any introduction. Who can forget the handsome, boyish face from Geet Gaata Chal, Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se, Balika Badhu, Satte Pe Satta, Nadiya Ke Paar, Sholay and countless other hits? After three decades of regaling both Hindi and Marathi film-buffs, Sachin’s illustrious career seems to have come full circle. He has now returned to the legendary Rajshri Productions, the banner which gave him his first taste of national stardom. And the prodigal son has returned to shoulder far greater responsibilities with Rajshri’s forthcoming film, ‘Jaana Pehchana’, a sequel to Rajshri’s legendary Akhyon KE Jharokhon Se...

Excerpts from an interview with the multi-faceted artiste…

How does it feel to return to the Rajshri banner after all these years, with ‘Jaana Pehchana’?

It feels wonderful! In fact, though I didn’t work with them for so long, I never really felt that I was away from them. Rajshri Productions has been like a second home to me and this is like a family reunion.

You are playing the lead in ‘Jaana Pehchana’ and also directing it. Was it only because of the banner that you chose to direct the film too?

Of course, it is a great opportunity for any director to work with a banner like Rajshri. They are family. However, it was also the unique concept of the film which drew me to it. It is an emotional, sensitive romantic and contemporary story telling of the sort that has never been tackled in Indian cinema ever as it not only deals with Jaana Pehchana but also with Aakhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se . It is a challenge to delve deep into the nuances of the relationship between the two protagonists.

What was your reaction when you first heard that Ranjeeta would be your co-star once again?

It is very rare in the industry to see a popular on screen couple come together again in a sequel of the same film. That too after so many years ! We worked together in Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se and the audience loved our chemistry. She is such a brilliant actor. It is a great pleasure to work her even as a director.

Could you tell us a little about what Jaana Pehchana is all about?

Jaana Pehchana is basically a sequel to the hit film, Akhiyon ke Jharokhon Se. In AKJS, we saw the beautiful romance between Arun and Lily where eventually, Arun Mathur was left alone after his beloved, Lili’s (Ranjeeta) death and he has been living in her memory ever since.

Jaana Pehchana introduces Asha (Ranjeeta), an author, who has an uncanny resemblance to Lily . She walks into the life of Arun Mathur to write his biography. What follows from there is a contemporary love story with a beautiful blend of old school romance combined with young love.

You are also singing a couple of songs in the film. What made you decide to do playback singing too?

It wasn’t me who decided that. It was our music director Ravindra Jain’s decision. He thought my voice would suit the character I play in the film. And by the way, this is not the first time I am singing in a film. I’ve been doing that since the past three decades!

Talking about Ravindra Jain, he had also composed the music for your super-hit films like Geet Gaata Chal and Akhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se, Nadiya Ke Paar. How is it interacting with him as a director?

Ravindra Jain or Dadu, as we all call him, has been a father-figure to me ever since I did those two films. Tthe unforgettable songs of Geet Gaata Chal, Akhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se and Nadiya Ke Paar are still loved by people of every age. Absolutely nothing has changed since then. Dadu is still creating the same kind of magical music, which will be evident when the songs are released.

We hear that you have also written the screenplay for ‘Jaana Pehchana’. Since you are acting in and directing the film too, don’t you think it is too much of a pressure?

Multi-tasking has always come naturally to me. For all my Marathi films as well, I have involved myself in the screenplays, direction, production, along with acting, so it was nothing new to me. In fact, it made the process much more exciting.

What made you decide to write the screenplay as well?

It was not planned. It just so happened that after reading the basic structure of the film’s story, I began developing it in my own way. And I finally ended being the screenplay writer too!

From Akhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se to Jaana Pehchana, what changes have you noticed in Rajshri Productions’ way of working and their approach to films in general?

The biggest change has obviously been the use of advanced technology which wasn’t available then. In keeping with the times, their films now have a much modern feel and look. But the legendary Rajshri values and their ethics are still very much the same. They have still kept that tradition intact. And it is this quality for which I respect and love them immensely.

You have used the word unique to describe jaana Pehchana. What should the audiences expect?You will have to go and see the movie to know why it is unique. I won’t spoil the surprise element but all i can say is that you will see a 22-year-old Sachin and Ranjeeta also!

Synopsis- 8th AUGUST, 2011 – Monday

Entertainment ke Liye Sholay Karega.

The theme of today’s episode on Entertainment ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega is Sholay special.

The Sholay magic will be recreated in the episode today where show host Mona Singh will be seen dressed as ‘Gabbar’ and Vishal as ‘Thakur’.

While Das Family will present a circus act on the famous track Des Mera Angrez Re Babu and amaze everyone present,

Cchau Family will put up a spectacular performance with fire and sword. Chhau family will be seen gifting Ganesh Masks to both the judges on the show.

Some will try their hands at aerial acts while others will dance and boogie in the middle of the air and impress everyone including the judges.

Magician raj will exhibit incredible and startling magical acts. While contestants do this,

Show hosts Mona and Vishal will do a quick ‘Character Dhila’ number dressed like Gabbar and Thakur.

Who will enter the finals , who will not? Will Mona be able to match the energy level of the most hated character in the film, Gabbar or Vishal the wit of ‘Thakur’?
