He loves to spend his spare time riding and is planning a week-long road trip through West Texas into Colorado, that will require that he take along some changes of clothes and a few personal items. Archie decided to give him some <a href="http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/category.cfm?model_ID=0&category_ID=3&sblid=Saddlebags">saddlebags</a> for his bike that will allow him to carry all he will need on the trip. Archie was going to surprise him, but when he found out how many selections there were available at Cruiser Customizing, Arch asked him to make his pick and Archie would pay for them as his Father’s Day gift. It is an offshoot of spades, so if you know about trumps, you will have no trouble picking up Cutthroat.<br /><br />To begin, deal seven cards to each player (4 or more players is the most fun, and you can play with up to seven). When each hand has been dealt, the dealer turns up the next card on the deck to determine trump for that hand. So trump can change each hand.<br /><br />The first player to the left of the dealer bids on how many tricks s/he thinks s/he can catch. Every one bids around to the dealer. One of the differences between cutthroat and spades is that the total number of bids must not equal the number of tricks available in the hand. So if the bids have totaled six when the dealer is to bid, he may not bid one, anything but. That assures that every hand at least one player will have his "throat cut".<br /><br />The hand begins with the first bidder leading any card s/he wants, including trump. Everyone must follow suit if he can, high card wins the trick. If a player does not follow suit, he cannot win the trick unless s/he trumps.<br /><br />The game proceeds by dealing six cards to each palyer for the second hand, five for the next and so on down to one. Then you proceed back up to seven, by adding one card to the deal till you get back to seven. The game is over after thirteen hands, high scorer wins.<br /><br />The scoring in Cutthroat is a bit different than spades as well. You can only score if you catch exactly the number of tricks you bid. If you bid 2 and catch 3, no points. If you bid 3 and catch 2, no points. There is no penalty like in spades where you subtract the underbids. That name came from the lake that had been dug by the slaves on the sugar plantation owned by Abner Jackson, brother of Andrew Jackson. <br /><br />Almost everything in Lake Jackson was within walking distance from everything else. Residents walked to school and to the movies and to the woods or the Little League Park, which was the center of civic activity in the summer months. <br /><br />Archie and his buddies, Wayne and Larry, lived a carefree life and did almost everything together. Archie’s dad came to think that MeWayneandLarry was one word, as in “MeWayneandLarry are going to the drug store for a coke.” Or “MeWayneandLarry are going to fish at Lost Lake.”<br /><br />Fashion was never an issue for Archie; he wore Levi’s, tee shirts and Keds most of the time, unless he was going to church. Then he wore a suit and tie and a pair of penny loafers. Archie’s dad had been a sailor and had no use for duck-tail haircuts, so Arch wore a crew cut most of the time. <br /><br />Before their twelfth birthday, Archie and his pals could get into the Lake Theater for twenty cents. From his quarter allowance that left a nickel for popcorn or a candy bar. Most of the time he got a roll of LifeSavers because they lasted longer. Archie liked the Wild Cherry ones best. <br /><br />When someone turned twelve, the price of a ticket to the picture show went up to fifty cents. Archie solved the problem of the price increase by getting a job at the theater. Not only did he earn some pin money, but he also got into the movies free when he was not working! But that does not keep him from having an interest in those enjoy a more glamorous style. He is intrigued with stories of those who have climbed the ladder to the top rungs. He recently read about another of those when he found an article about <a href="http://thgworldwideblog.com/leadership-biographies/paul-meakins/">Paul Meakins</a> on the blog that was recently launched by THG Worldwide.<br /><br />Mr. Meakins had been with the Financial Times in London, as an executive in advertising sales. But his move to THG Worldwide opened some doors that made Archie a bit wistful. Meakins has worked in the companies offices in Cleveland, Los Angeles, and Atlanta, before moving to the Chicago office, where he now works with North American CEO, Jon Stromberg, in finding, recruiting, and training team members, as well a managing their performance. <br /><br />THG Worldwide is a Marcus Evans company that provides corporate hospitality services at the most spectacular sporting events in the world! Now Meakins can rub shoulders with the corporate giants at such events as The Dubai World Cup Horse Race, to the Masters Golf Classic to the Chinese Grand Prix! <br /><br />Such stories make Archie just a bit wistful. He knew when the chariot race would be on the screen, so every night he walked the two blocks to the theater to watch that scene. Ronda was able to make the move in December, just before the Christmas holidays. That gave her some freedom to really prepare for the family celebrations of the season. Ronda's mother is ill, hospitalized and facing a nursing home when whe is released. Ronda is having to go over there quite often, twenty or so miles away. The Browns are also raising two grandsons, 9 and 7, and are worn out at the end of every day. Archie came up with one that both agreed fit the category. They both grew up in homes with one bathroom for six people. That is about fiftten cents less than they had seen it the previous day. But later in that day Archie bought gas for $2.99. Now, one week later, he paid $2.69 per gallon. That is a significant drop, but not nearly as much as the drop in the cost of crude oil. Archie heard him loud and clear. When he was a kid he had lots of baseball cards, especially focusing on his beloved Brooklyn Dodgers. Upon graduation from high school, Archie gave his collection to his little brother, who later gave the cards to a neighbor boy when he went away to college. <br /><br />When Archie began collecting again in 1984, he quickly amassed a large number of cards. He loved to trade new rookie cards from packs of cards for older cards, like the ones he had as a boy. Archie now has sets of cards from 1952 to the present, and his collection takes up a whole room in his home. <br /><br />Archie has other items than just cards, he has a basketball signed by Akeem Olajuwan, before he added the H to his first name. He has a bat signed by Hank Aaron and Sadaharu Oh, the Japanese home run king. He has a program from Mickey Mantle’s funeral. She said, in the future, every home in America will have a microwave oven!” The Browns rolled our eyes at the prediction.<br /><br />For their tenth anniversary, Archie wanted to give Ronda a special gift. He went to our local Sears store and wandered around looking for the right thing. When he came to the microwaves, Arch knew that was what he wanted to give her. Ronda was floored, but she said. “It cost too much, and I will never use it.” <br /><br />That oven lasted for twenty years and was probably the most used appliance in their home, with the possible exception of the television. When it finally broke, Archie's wife went the store that afternoon and found a replacement before dark. Just today he did go to the Mall, to the only store in the area that carries his favorite shoes. He was not in the Mall over fifteen minutes. <br /><br />Archie is surely not a fan of shopping on the Friday following Thanksgiving, the so called Black Friday. The designation has to do with the idea that a store will make it out of the red ink and into profitability. Archie does not savor the huge crowds, even to take advantage of the great deals many of the merchants use to promote the day. <br /><br />Last year Archie was glad to find the web site called Black Friday.net. It is the place to go to find all the deals that are being offered in the stores without having to fight the traffic and the crowds. He fully intends to take advantage of the service this year to find out about the <a href="http://www.black-friday.net/">2008 thanksgiving specials</a>. Christmas shopping does not have to be a big circus.
