The PR firm, Rose+Moser+Allyn will have all the media, all local and state TV stations, present at the State Capitol next Tuesday, Nov. 13th, to hear Arizona Doctors of Chiropractic make our case that there is illegal discrimination going on and that ADOI Director Urias needs to be fired for letting it happen.

Patients are welcome to attend! If enough people turn out, we win the PR battle and our story will appear on the evening news of every TV station and every newspaper the next day. You can be there at 2:30 PM for the press conference starting at 3 PM and you should be able to leave by 3:30 PM. The Capitol lawn is just West of 17th Avenue in front of the building with the copper top dome, and parking is free just East of 17th Avenue, all in Phoenix.

All of this organized by our friend Dr. Immerman of the Arizona Chiropractic Society. Please show your support if you can. It will mean better Chiropractic insurance benefits for everyone!

There is absolutely no excuse for allowing your neck to decay as seen in the above picture. With all the technological advances currently at our disposal, a simple x-ray still proves invaluable. It's a shame that 90% of alignment disorders don't result in pain. If these shifts in alignment did result in pain, perhaps a person would think to have their spine evaluated long before significant decay has set in. Unfortunately, this is not the case but it's certainly a compelling reason to have your spine checked periodically throughout your life!

Although we can help to stop additional decay in this person's spine, decay is permanent and what you see cannot be reversed. Would you be shocked to learn this person is under 40 years of age? It's true! Folks, please don't wait to have your spine checked until you're in pain. Unless you're a firm believer in the hope-and-pray or wait-and-see approach, be proactive and call us today! Spine remodeling can save your spine and is like nothing you've ever seen before!!!

Dr. David J. This azcentral.com article has the following quote from Physician Stephen Borowsky, medical director of the Surgicenter Pain Unit in Phoenix, "seemingly trivial postural misalignments sometimes lead to pain." Also, directly from the azcentral.com article, "former teenage sloucher Janice Novak of Chanhassen, Minn., creator of the book and video Posture, Get It Straight!, teaches a three-step process for improving posture." Novak continues, "It starts with aligning the body, then doing strengthening and stretching exercises to maintain good posture. Finally, she advises making adjustments in your daily routine, including rearranging your computer workstation, moving your car seat and placing a pillow strategically."

Problem #1: postural misalignments are abnormal and not trivial. Postural misalignments reduce the ability of the spine to optimally repair and rebuild over time and ultimately results in degenerative changes, REGARDLESS OF PAIN! FYI, degenerative changes are NOT normal! They're common, but not normal; there's a huge difference.

Problem #2: there is no one-size-fits-all approach to aligning the body and improving posture. Point being, unless you know the exact position of your spine, posture modifications are non-specific and simply not good enough. You deserve better!

Solution: digitized postural analysis, digitized spine x-rays, and specific spine recommendations to ensure a life-time of spine health and optimal function. Considering you only get one spine, in my opinion, a one-size-fits-all approach is criminal and you deserve better. Considering the fact that poor posture results in poor health, can you really afford to take the wait-and-see approach? I have yet to see someone with a bad spine age gracefully. Get your spine checked today and get on with living the healthy life you deserve!
Huh? I thought the lyrics are, "Rain rain go away..."? They are, but unfortunately an estimated 116 million American adults suffer with chronic pain and sing the former everyday. The momentary absence of pain after constant suffering is certainly a relief, even if only short-lived. In other words, although the pain may go away temporarily it will certainly "come again another day". This is what life is like for 116 million Americans. Imagine a life with chronic pain. Imagine having pain most of your day and night. Imagine never being completely comfortable in your own skin or worse yet, having no hope for a pain-free life EVER.

September is Pain Awareness Month and I ask everyone to consider this: failure to eliminate an acute pain results in chronic pain. For more details visit Preventing Chronic Pain. So, the next time you have neck or back pain and decide to wait-and-see what will happen or decide to hope-and-pray it will go away, consider yourself warned. Either approach, in lieu of seeking out the cause of your pain and receiving appropriate treatment/rehabilitation, may just result in you joining the ranks of these 116 million sufferers. Not my idea of a good decision, but you're not me and you have to make your own decisions. I truly hope you make the educated decision and reduce your risk for a future with chronic pain.

Here's an excerpt of a poem I found on the American Pain Foundation website - http://t.co/mAZSo8L. Visit the link to read this poem in its entirety.

Poetry Submission from Robert Root

Without my ills I'd ditch my pills.
Really? Another Crap Article

Adjust your monitor, select the appropriate chair, determine the sitting position...ALL POINTLESS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR SPINE LOOKS LIKE. Did you get that folks? Pointless! Absolutely pointless. How can you possibly know what sitting position, chair or monitor adjustment is best for YOUR spine without first knowing the current position of your spine? You can't, hence the reason this recommendation is a one-size-fits-all approach, will not work and why I get upset when I see this crap posted on-line as if it's fact.

Folks, you deserve better. You deserve a spine specific recommendation...end of story. You deserve to work smarter, not harder, in your attempts to protect your spine - this simply cannot happen when you take an illogical approach.
Wow! I've been writing for years and preaching the importance of optimal spine alignment and how spine remodeling techniques ensure optimal spine function yet I see this garbage posted this morning. This is truly upsetting.

Why in the world folks still seem to think they have spine pain because they "slept wrong" or don't have the perfect pillow is beyond me. It's 2011 for crying out loud. Get a grip folks. It's not brain surgery. It's basic engineering principles - the spine has a normal optimal resting position that allows for optimum joint, muscle and nerve function. It's that simple! Yet, the approach most choose has nothing to do with the restoration of optimal position and therefore does nothing to stop the time related progression of pain into a more serious and potentially chronic (live with forever) condition.

Stop treating symptoms folks, stop wasting time, stop wasting money! The cause of your headache, shoulder and neck pain is NOT your crappy pillow and is NOT due to a lack of massage and heat! Treat the cause, save your spine, and get on with life!

Thank you for taking an NSCA Online Quiz!
Please keep this email as your confirmation/receipt.
Your quiz has been successfully scored and recorded.

Quiz: June 2011 - The Role of Instability Rehabilitative Resistance Training

Congratulations, you passed the quiz! Your score was 100%.

The Nuts & Bolts

According to material studied for this quiz, published in the June 2011 Strength and Conditioning Journal, instability training reduces force output and is therefore more appropriate for rehabilitative purposes than athletic conditioning. Therefore, if you're an athlete, don't spend a lot of time on instability devices like the BOSU, Swiss Ball, or inflatable discs. On the other hand, if you're attempting to improve overall coordination and joint stability GO FOR IT! My cautionary advice while using instability devices...maintain optimal positioning, take your time, and have a hawk-like focus!

Also, as covered in the article, considering the aerobic/Type-I nature of the majority of our core muscles (erector spinae, multifidus, and longissimus thoracis), optimal core training is a combination of low weight/high rep core specific exercises. "Squats and deadlifts produced greater activation of the erector spinae muscles versus unstable calisthenic exercises such as the superman exercise and side bridge."

Train hard, train safe, and most of all...HAVE FUN!

Dr. David J. Think again! Here's a 2011 systematic review of the literature to determine the efficacy of injecting botox into your neck for neck pain. The authors conclude...Current evidence fails to confirm either a clinically important or a statistically significant benefit..." National Library of Medicine

Despite the results of this study, botox continues to be injected with the idea of reducing or eliminating neck pain. How absurd! If you think your neck hurts because there's not enough botox within the muscles, you're delusional. This should be common sense. Folks, find the cause of your problem and the solution will appear less like a "shot in the dark."
On the other hand, there's surgery. The idea of someone cutting on me doesn't bring joy to my heart. I realize that surgeons are highly skilled and that surgery serves a purpose when done at the right time for the right reason. I suppose this is why an article I came about recently has seriously disturbed me. You might even go so far as to say that it scared me! Here's the link...Spine Surgery isn’t so Scary After All

After reading this article a couple thoughts come to mind. First of all, aren't the ligaments all the same age? If they all wore out equally, wouldn't you get "slipped discs" throughout your entire spine vs just one level? Secondly, in my opinion, this article is seriously biased. You can tell by the frequent mention of "spine surgery Los Angeles" and "spine surgeon Los Angeles" with the associated hyperlinks.

What truly upsets me is that this is not an article designed to educate the public, but instead an article designed to suggest surgery as a cure for the nonspecific diagnosis of "back pain." There is no attempt by the author to inform the public as to the risks of spine surgery or to inform the public as to the alternatives to surgery. Lastly, there is no such diagnosis as a "slipped disc." The term slipped disc is slang. This term suggests that the disc actually has the ability to slide around in-between the vertebrae which is untrue.
Spine saving to resume on the 12th! Oops, that posting would've been better left on the office front door. Luckily, practically everyone I know is aware that I leave for the Phoenix airport in 12 hours where I'll be spending 4 days with the National Strength and Conditioning Association in sunny Las Vegas Nevada. According to the NSCA website, "Join us for the nation’s only combined gathering of top professionals in the fields of strength training and conditioning, personal training, performance research, education and sports medicine." NSCA link

They've managed to secure quite the line-up, Conference Schedule, including opening ceremony keynote speaker Bobby Bowden. For those who don't know, Mr. Bowden led the Florida State University Seminoles to 28 consecutive Bowl Games. After that, there's going to be lots of research updates tied in with practical application, and all new this year...hands-on-sessions.

As I write this I've gotta laugh. My only concern? Whether my 2 cats will be alright; they're a bit spoiled, but it's only because they're the greatest cats ever. Luckily, the wonderful Ms. Kathy Reed will be at the helm and now it's all in God's hands. Hope everyone has a wonderful week. Until next time...this is Dr. Doperak, Phoenix Chiropractor, signing off.
The One-Size-Fits-All Approach Don't Work? Huh!

Does it really make sense to wait until something goes wrong to give your body care and attention it needs and deserves? I apologize, but the suggestion that older athletes "may" need a custom exercise program is absurd. Not to mention the fact this article was approved by the website's medical board.
Older Athletes May Need Custom Exercise Programs

EveryBODY needs a custom exercise program. Not only because we're structurally and biochemically individual, but because our bodies change over time in ways that cannot be predicted. A custom program can only be designed once a proper assessment of an individuals current condition and goals are assessed. Any assessment that fails to assess spine alignment fails to truly customize the program. Unless you're working in a non-gravity environment, you're constantly fighting laws of nature that do not ever stop taking their toll upon your body. For example, a person who's thoracic sagittal curve alignment is hypolordotic will be damaged by standing up straight while exercising.

For more information about optimal spine alignment, visit idealspine.com and spine-remodeling.com. Simply stated, you deserve a truly custom approach that will not only protect your spine, but also address any structural deformities specific to you at the same time!

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://www.allstarchiroblog.com/2011/06/really-one-size-fits-all-approach-dont.html" title="Really? I never stopped running. I may have been exhausted, cotton-mouthed, and doubtful at times, but I never stopped running! Never did my legs stop moving, albeit slow at times (NOT A WALK). My goal…achieved! I’m proud of that. I’d like to thank my Lord and personal savior Jesus Christ. I’d like to thank my ADD for giving me that hawk like focus, my trainers – Jason and Eric @ FIIT and Kevin K @ Ready State Fitness, my Doctor of Chiropractic extraordinaire Josh Haggard DC, and all the heart-felt support from patients, family and friends.
