March of Dimes Bikers for Babies is a fundraising event. Each year more than 5,000 motorcyclists participate and raise funds for the March of Dimes. Thousands of riders reach out to family and friends for donations to help them reach their goals. Bikers for Babies event day celebrates their success and allows the families to say thank you.

Kansas City boasts the #1 March of Dimes Bikers for Babies event in the country!

Bikers for Babies-Kansas City began in 1995 with 130 riders raising $3,000. By 2016, over 4,000 participants raised more than $600,000, bringing the 22-year event total to over $8.6 million. Last year, participants came from 37 counties across Kansas, 45 counties across Missouri and 18 other states. Riders meet at Kansas Speedway and set out on a designated route through Kansas looping back to Kansas Speedway where they enjoy a family-friendly event featuring lunch, a bike show and music. This is not an escorted ride, which means participants can begin the ride anytime.

Johnny Dare – Honorary Chairman of Bikers for Babies

Since 1996, Johnny Dare has been the spokesman for the ride and has introduced the March of Dimes ambassador children and their families to his listeners. Among those listeners are thousands of motorcycle riders who respond to his message to “throw a leg over” and donate what you can to make a difference in saving babies’ lives. On behalf of March of Dimes, our ambassador families, volunteers and thousands of riders. Ed’s Posse

Ed Hale began supporting Bikers for Babies in 2003 by standing on street corners collecting change. His helpers soon became Ed’s Posse and dedicated to the March of Dimes Mission. In the past 13 years, they have donated more than $1.12 million to help save babies’ lives.

Don Post

A dedicated volunteer for the March of Dimes for more than 30 years. He began volunteering for March of Dimes in 1972 as an Amateur Radio Operator supporting WalkAmerica, later renamed March for Babies. In 1995, Don volunteered for March of Dimes “Bikers for Babies” motorcycle ride. He then joined the planning committee and since 2010 he has been co-chairman of the planning committee.

Don was diagnosed with ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, in 1980 but it has not stopped Don from coordinating 700+ volunteers each year for March of Dimes events. His time, talent and leadership is unmatched. He inspires everyone who knows him, and yet his belief is that he is “the most blessed man to still be alive and surrounded by people whom he considers “heroes for babies.” His humility is matched by his wisdom, sense of humor and desire to help others.

In 2013, Don’s volunteer dedication led to the NASCAR Foundation acknowledging him as the “Betty Jane France Humanitarian of the Year.” The NASCAR Foundation donated $100,000 in Don’s name to his chosen charity, March of Dimes Bikers for Babies. Immediately following that announcement, Kansas Speedway honored Don with an additional $100,000 in his name to Bikers for Babies.

In recognition of Don’s dedication and love of the children who benefit from March of Dimes research and services, the March of Dimes is pleased to announce the creation of the “Don Post Volunteer Service Award” that will be presented to a deserving March of Dimes volunteer dedicated to the mission to help all babies have a healthy start in life.
To be considered, nominees for this award should exemplify volunteerism at its best; be currently active within the March of Dimes Greater Kansas Chapter; and volunteered with one or more of March of Dimes fundraising events.

All Don Post Volunteer Service Award nominations must be submitted on the following form. Nominations must be received by the selection committee by August 31, 2017.

March of Dimes is thankful to their parents’ for sharing their stories of their children’s NICU experiences, the struggles their babies went through to survive and how March of Dimes research gave their babies a chance to live a happy and healthy life. The March of Dimes is proud to honor longtime volunteer Don Post as a finalist for the
Betty Jane France Humanitartian of the Year Award

In 1980, Don Post was diagnosed with ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease and given 3-5 years to live. ALS is a progressive disease in which the brain becomes unable to initiate and control muscle movement. In spite of that diagnoses Don has spent the last 37 years volunteering and donating his time to a variety of charities in Kansas City fortunate to have him. We are grateful that in the last 12 years his heart and soul have been called to the March of Dimes.

Don has served on the Kansas City Bikers for Babies committee for 18 years and has been the committee co-chairman since 2010. His leadership has been instrumental in making the event the largest Bikers for Babies in the country, helping to raise $6.8 million for the March of Dimes. Not only does Don donate his time but he has also personally fundraised more than $15,000 for the March of Dimes since 2007.

Most of us could not fathom the person sacrifice that Don makes to simply get up in the morning, yet Don continues to give of his time and talent. In Spite of his diagnosis and the progression of the disease, Don recently turned 70. At his birthday party he said “I always refer to the years after my diagnosis as my good life. I have always believed that my involvement in helping others gives me a real feeling of worth- it is my reason to get out of bed each morning”.

March of Dimes is very blessed and grateful for Don’s contentious commitment to helping those who are too small and too young to help themselves. Thanks to Don $200,000 have been donated to the March of Dimes and our continued commitment to healthy babies.

Working Together for Stronger Healthier Babies

The March of Dimes is inspired by all babies – those born healthy and those needing our help to survive and thrive. Our mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

Throughout Kansas and Missouri the March of Dimes…

.76 cents of every dollar raised by the Greater Kansas Chapter goes back into mission investment. The money you raise for Bikers for Babies® goes back into our community. Thank you for working together for stronger healthier babies.

Below is more information about local Greater Kansas initiatives and programs.

NICU Family Support Programs provide information, support and comfort to families whose babies are treated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The March of Dimes NICU Family Support Program is currently active in three sites in Kansas City and Topeka. These programs reach more than 1,000 families each year with services including parent-to-parent support, activities for siblings, and assistance for families who experience the loss of an infant.

Perinatal Community Collaboratives provide culturally appropriate prenatal care and education to Hispanic, African American and low-income women through partnerships with health care providers and community agencies. These programs utilize March of Dimes’ Comenzando bien, Becoming a Mom and Tu Puedes Hacerlo (gestational diabetes) curricula. Programs have been established in Wichita, Salina, Topeka, Junction City and Kansas City.

Giving Babies 39+ Weeks is an initiative that teaches moms why the last weeks of pregnancy count. Elective delivery before 39 weeks of pregnancy robs babies of needed time to fully develop. We help hospitals implement quality improvement programs to eliminate elective c-sections and inductions before 39 weeks gestation.
