Teachers and Lessons Learned

I've been blessed over the years with teachers who enter my life when I least expect it. Serendipity? Fate? Luck? Your guess is as good as mine. There is an old saying, and I don't know who to quote on it but: "When the student is ready the teacher will appear." What comes to me more and more lately, is how I can take myself out of the game by not being present - by not really listening when I should be, or not really committing to something I probably should.

My trip-up has until recently always been the "what-if" syndrome. What if I decide to do this and that other, more interesting thing comes along. My worry is always that I've committed to something or someone and I don't want to then disappoint them by changing my mind. I like to see things through. Usually though, the only thing that gets me is paralyzed.

Things that Elena Brower, one of my more recent teachers/angels, writes about, really get me to wake up, if even for a few minutes. Yoga classes with her are amazing and in the one Reiki session I gave her, I was literally rocked on my feet when our energies connected. I had to stop and reground myself to continue. What it taught me is how connected we all really are and it caused me to realize how many different ways I feel energy.

And then there is Jorja - my life coach for 3 months. She has an amazing perception for what's going on inside. She said things to me no one ever did before and woke me up to a different form of reality. Big Mind - which she learned from her teacher, Genpo Roshi. I only got a small dose of it but the same thing kept coming back around - awareness. To me, it's akin to Eckhard Tolle's Power of Now.

Where are you now? Are you really present, or are you somewhere else? Physically, you're in the chair, or on the floor or standing in line at the supermarket. But where is your mind? Jamaica? Your grandma's house when you were six? See what I mean? We occupy space that a large percentage of time, is void of our awareness.

Do this - breathe. Take a big breath, hold it for a second, and release it. Do that again with your eyes closed. I mean really do it. Don't think about doing it, participate in your life. You'd be surprised how little real breathing you do. Breathing for shear survival is on auto-pilot. It has to be because we sleep - right? But honest, conscious, deep, soul-filling breathing is an act we can practice that will bring us to the "now". It will snap us into an awareness that usually floats around us like a fog. Let some sunshine in and practice awareness.

My Practice in DC Area

Hi all,
I'm finally getting settled in and ready to start building my practice. I'll be training a new practitioner starting in the next couple of weeks and am also starting to look at yoga studio space. Thought a deal was going to go through with Hot Yoga in DC but that's still up in the air.

If you've ever had any thoughts about pursuing energy work, Usui Reiki is a wonderful gift to give yourself and others. There are many positive avenues and yours is only limited by your imagination.

As The Spirit Moves Us

Sometimes it's very hard for us to see the guideposts that have been set out for us. The trees and shrubbery of doubt and fear get in the way, obscuring the message that is meant to lead us to our higher selves.

Sometimes we'll see the sign just fine and it might say, TURN HERE, but we know that where we want to go is straight ahead so we ignore that sign. And then we get to where we knew we needed to get to and it's not what we thought at all.

I've always been an adventurer. I'll take the long way just for the change of scenery, and always with the curiosity of a child. What cool, new, exciting things will I find over here? Ooh, what if I take that lane there? What's down here? Looks spooky - let's go! And this whole new world opens up and offers itself freely, expanding what we thought we knew and showing us that as smart as we are, there's always more to learn.

I came to those crossroads again a couple of months back. At first the signs just said, "hey jeff, maybe you need to turn here." And I thought, "yeah maybe". And the next sign said, "Hey Jeff. You probably should turn Here." And I said, "Um, let me think about that for a sec, okay?"

And then the sign said, "TURN HERE NOW. TIME'S UP!" And I said, "Absolutely! I'm turning! See, the wheel is now going that way!" And as soon as I made that decision, flowers blossomed along the road. Aromas came to me that I'd never sensed before. Colors became brighter and more distinct. My head cleared, my shoulders softened, and grace smiled at me.

If we can get to where we start believing the first sign, and trusting that the universe is infinitely wise and good, we can walk amongst those flowers more often, hand in hand with grace.

My Own Medicine

Aside from some achy knees sometimes, I feel great most of the time. For the last two days though, my back has really been bothering me. I was on the 7 train heading home today and couldn't believe the pain I was in. Not a usual thing for me.

And then it dawned on me - Reiki. I do it for others but some how never really needed it for myself like this. The train was very crowded then as it was the beginning of rush hour. So, I closed my eyes, invoked the Power Symbol, and imagined my hands on my lower left back. Immediately it warmed up, and within seconds, the pain subsided and then pretty much disappeared. It was still a bit stiff, but the pain was gone. Cool stuff, this Reiki.

Simplicity

In 2006, a book came out by John Maeda called "The Laws of Simplicity: Design, Technology, Business, Life". John is a professor at MIT and the founder of the SIMPLICITY Consortium at the MIT Media Lab. In this "simple" little tome of only 100 pages, he posits 10 laws and 3 keys that can guide us towards a cleaner, more meaningful world. It's an amazing book.

This morning I was making a power shake and the sheer simplicity of our Black and Decker blender hit me. The buttons for the 5 speeds are arranged like a smile with an additional "Ice Crush" in the upper left corner and a "Pulse" in the upper right. And right smack in the center - bigger than the other buttons is "OFF".

Plain. Easy. Simple.

Just like Reiki.

Reiki is simplicity in action. It doesn't require anything other than openness. It doesn't even require belief. It can be done any where at any time - I often give myself quick treatments on the trains and have given co-workers quick treatments at their desk.

Sometimes simple things confuse me. Even though I pride myself on being able to find the quickest route to a conclusion or resolution, and have an eye for seeing how seemingly disparate things can fit together, I expect to be able to do lots of things to accomplish a worthwhile goal. You know - do more to get more. And Reiki contradicts that, as do meditation and yoga.

In each of these disciplines the tenant is "Do less to get more." And I see it with every new person I do a session with. At the beginning of my practice, I would "try" to much. Oh, the Reiki did what it was meant to do but I often found myself pushing it, or willing it to give the person on the table everything he or she needed. And at times I still find myself wondering if I'm transmitting anything at all.

And every new session brings me a new revelation. I see things - places I need to touch the body to run the energy. They are like little maps in my mind. And all I do now is ask. I ask the Reiki to guide me and then let go of any expectations. And every person who sits up at the end of a session has had a wonderful experience - often times revelatory and astounding.

Dr. Masaru Emoto, Water, and Reiki

Hi all,
Dr. Emoto has discovered some amazing things about water. Through his experiments, he has proven that water is affected by thought. In his book "The Hidden Messages in Water", a New York Times best seller, he has published pictures of water crystals that have been exposed to different words or phrases.

Any guesses what they look like? The water with the phrase "You fool!" written on a piece of paper and taped to the bottle wouldn't produce a crystal at all. Similar uses of negative words showed the same in either making no crystal, or making ones that are malformed and ugly. And when shown "Love and Gratitude" or "Thank you", the crystals that formed were beautiful and delicate.

Next he tried music. Heavy metal music made dark, ominous crystals while classical music made alluring, elegant crystals. Amazing.

And here is where all this lead me. We are made of water. Our bodies are 70% water. Water is affected by energy. You with me? Reiki is an energy - Universal Life Force Energy. When we channel the energy to our clients we are changing the way water exists in the body.

Go back up to the previous example - heavy metal music. Now, I like rock and roll very much, it's what I grew up with and I'll always go back to Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. But now I think about it differently because I have an idea of what it's doing to the water in my body. And as a Reiki Master, I can counter that affect with a self-reiki session. Or, I can listen to some Brahms and make the water happy again too. ;-)

But what I'm getting at is that Reiki energy can affect the water in your body. To me, that's very cool. And it's cool because the reiki energy is love - and love energy going into a body can do nothing but make that body more whole and balanced.

The Reiki/Art Initiative

I'm starting to get this off the ground. Spoke to a New York City artist buddy of mine and he's interested in hearing more and helping me with it. Also have been having conversations with a lady at work who is really good at marketing and building. Her and her boyfriend have build a software company and have some apps bundled with HP computers. Way cool.

The Reiki Community

Hey,
I joined Facebook this week. And I did that because of some things I've been reading about this new age of "google". So as I started learning about it, I saw groups and typed in Reiki. I joined one and started participating in conversations.

In just a few nights I've gotten some great ideas on how to use Reiki for myself and others. It's a great community and I hope I can bring some value to it.

Hey,
I just got myself on Facebook a few days ago and today found a Reiki group and joined. There are some very insightful people out there and I learned some really cool things to do with the Reiki energy.

Had my first full-blown session at Virayoga last night. It went very well and the atmosphere in the room is great. One little lamp, some candles and sage, and some great meditation music. I feel things are going to work very well there.

Oct 4 - The Day I Become a Reiki Master

Hi,
Yes, I'm getting my Master's Training this weekend. I'm very excited about it, too. My teacher, Terri Heiman is fantastic and if you're in the NYC or Long Island area, and are even considering becoming a Reiki Practitioner, let me know and I'll put you in contact with her. I'm building her a new website right now and that should be live soon so I'll link to that when ready.

I've just bought my domain for my practice and hope to have it ready in the next couple of months. I'll let you know what that is and I'll probably switch all this over to that as well.

Today I met Sky Speaker, a Reiki Master who works out of Tri-Mur-Ti Wellness in Soho. He's a great guy and invited me to come down to their healing circle - which I'll absolutely do very soon. It will be nice to get into the community and start learning and meeting new people. I'll let you know how that goes.

My Brother

My brother has suffered from migraines and other types of headaches for years. He's been getting specialized treatments that involve a huge needle in the side of his head but still lives with the pain every day.

I was back home during the summer and we were at his house watching the tube and relaxing a bit. He looked over at me and said, "Okay, what the fuck is Reiki and why are you involved in it?" I told him to take off his glasses and shoes and lie down on the floor. He just looked at me for a second and and then took off his glasses.

As he moved to the floor, I started explaining Reiki just a bit to him. I told him to do a bit of deep breathing and had him close his eyes. As I began my session ritual prep I started seeing very clear pictures of where his energy needed support. I did the third eye chakra position and then moved immediately to the sides of his head. After just a few seconds he asked my why I was shaking my hands. I told him my hands were still. He was quiet again for a few seconds and then said, "Oh my God. It's that nerve in my head pulsing and it's matching the Reiki pulse.

After I felt he was clearer there, I was drawn to go straight to his feet. There are usually a few other hand positions before this but the message was very strong that Reiki was needed there. I moved down to his feet and there, I pushed his Wellspring of Life" points on each foot. Immediately his legs started convulsing and at one point his butt came completely up off the floor. I stayed there for another ten minutes or so and then I completed.

It took him a while to move or talk. I had him drink a big glass of water and we went to see a movie. Driving home afterwards he looked over at me. "I didn't want to believe Reiki was real. I thought you were so full of shit. I was dead wrong. And I didn't want to tell you this before, I wanted to see if it was real or not. This is the first time since I can remember that I don't have any pain in my head. I've always got something - either behind my left eye, or in my jaw. It's all gone. Reiki is amazing. Can you stay another two weeks?"

Yep, Reiki is amazing alright. We started doing a distance treatment this week. Reiki is something you can send. If circumstances don't allow - like say 450 miles - it can be sent. We've done one session so far and he said it just completely relaxed him. I'm going to start tomorrow with a session for a buddy in Caly.

And Oct 4 I get my Master's Training and Certificate.

Energy Work Symphony

A few weeks ago I bought the book "Energy Medicine" by Donna Eden and just a few days ago I picked up "Intuitive Wellness" by Laura Alden Kamm, and "Rainbow Reiki" by Walter Lubeck. I'm beginning to see great applications for a mixture of Reiki and Energy Medicine because they compliment one another extremely well. And remember the mantra - It's all energy.

So, I did a session with a couple of friends last week. He'd never heard of Reiki before but was open to trying it to relieve stress. During the session, I had several very clear instructions given on where energy was needed. (And by this I mean inner-eye visuals.) At one point I had him breath in red for his root chakra. Towards the end of the session a technique from "Energy Medicine" came to me and I used that on his back. Later, after having dinner with he and his girlfriend, he remarked that it felt like I was pulling something out of him.

I also had very precise visions during her session. She commented on very tingly feet and hands, and a headache that was induced at her third eye chakra. I saw a picture of my with right hand on her second chakra, and just my middle finger at her third eye. She said when I did that a lightening bolt shot down and joined the bottom chakra. I then started seeing the energy cycling through my hands and linking with her second chakra, but the color was violet. So, I told her to breathe in violet through my left hand and breathe violet out through my right. Towards the end of her session, I started getting visions of holding reflexology points on specific toes. I wasn't sure why then, but when I went back to the charts, it was for the headache. I was being given exact spots on her toes to relieve the headache but nothing said, "This'll take care of the headache." I just followed my guidance.

So I called this post "Energy Work Symphony" because that's kind of what it's like for me. A well written piece includes many intstruments working together towards the common goal of the orchestra - a moving performance. That's what's starting to come out of me and it feels really cool. I'm being lead to each of these new instruments, one at a time, so that together, they can work towards the common goal of the energy session - a healing. And I don't really like to call it healing because I really don't consider myself to be a healer. If anything I'm a facilitator. A person's energy works through my channel and intuition to balance and rejuvenate.

And I feel more and more honored each day I move through this. To be able to help people in this way is incredible, and it's expanding me in ways I never imagined.

REIKI/ART

I started getting a very strong feeling a few days ago. I'm trying to follow the messages as good as I can, and I'm going from there. If you're into the Tarot at all, and particularly Tarot Numerology, my spiritual archetype is The Knight of Wands, the Vision Quester, so here is my vision.

REIKI/ART is an idea to bring Reiki to artists, designers, writers, actors, dancers... I feel that as an artist/designer myself, I know the mindset and the frustrations. I've experienced the highest of highs as a clothing designer - showing at The Mercedes Benz Fashion Week to a standing ovation, and I've had to sleep on couches to keep a roof over my head. I've been to both sides and each has taught me valuable lessons. And now Reiki has come into my life.

I now have an energy toolkit that I'm using to help my friends and family. And since I belong to the community of creatives, I want to offer it there too. Honestly, I don't know the logistics of that yet, but I'm working on it. I'm thinking of connecting this to a charity as well, and that will become part of the energy exchange between me, my clients, and the bigger picture that we're all a part of.

What's a Session Like?

A typical session will last from 30 to 45 minutes - with the first being closer to an hour because we'll discuss a bit more then. The client - I don't like to use the term "patient" because I'm not a doctor - is fully clothed with shoes off. You will either lie down on a table, or on mats on the floor.

Before the session starts, I will get a good sense of why you've come to see me and what you hope to achieve in the session. I can lead you to establish and declare an intent for the session, or it can be as simple as de-stressing you from a hectic day, week, or life. And we've all been there. Life can sometimes beat us down and the amazing power of Reiki can help balance that back out. If this is a hospital session, then there are specific goals in mind for us both, for example, you've just had an operation and I am working to allow your body to heal in a kinder, less stressful manner.

Clarification Point - This is not a medical treatment. This is an alternative healing session. It is not a miracle cure either, but rather a pathway to well-being that we walk as partners. It is not about me healing you - it is about the reawakening of your natural energy patterns.

There are twelve hand positions that I will use on your body, starting at your head, and working down to your feet. These positions are in direct alignment with your bodies seven energy centers, collectively known as your "chakras". You may feel my hands get warm, and sometimes very hot. Muscles in your body may start to twitch and spasm a little. You may feel "heavy" limbs and feel as if you can't move. You may have visions and you may even cry as clogged and stale energies are released. Some people feel a vibration in their body and a sense of movement. Whether your responses are physical or emotional, it all is working for your highest good - Reiki energy can never be used for harm.

Reiki has nothing to do with religion or really even faith for that matter but it can be a spiritual experience if that is your current path. It will enter into your body whether you believe it will or not but it's my guess that you are an open minded person and will welcome this great experience, as many times as you feel is needed.

On my end, it is spiritual. I pray for guidance and follow the intuition that spirit provides because it is my intention to give you everything I can in a session. It is my intention to allow the Reiki energy to funnel through me as purely as possible, to fill you with light, love, and eternal wisdom.

Energy Overview and Reiki

You may have heard of a recent film called, "What The Bleep?" It's a documentary style film starring Marlee Matlin as a lady trying to figure out life. And it's probably a question that most of us, at one time or another, have asked. Well, what the film portrays is that everything is energy. Everything. Let me repeat that once more. Everything. What differs are the vibrational patterns of those different versions of everything. The table your computer is sitting on - energy. The food you put in your mouth - energy. The thoughts that swirl through your mind - energy. And that wonderful thing that is your body - energy. And this isn't theory, this is proven by Quantum Physics. There is a basic energy model and that model is mirrored from the galaxies in the heavens, to the atoms spinning around in the molecules of your body. It's all the same.

What I and a growing number of people across the globe - yes, also energy - do is become a channel for the Reiki energy and allow it to serve you. Your body's energy patterns guide the Reiki to where it is needed the most. I don't tell it what to do, I ask it to do what your body needs it to do. My job is to remain clear and allow the energies to work out their respective miracles for your healing and well-being.

Many hospitals are beginning to understand the benefits of Reiki and are employing Reiki practitioners in their cancer centers and for pre and post-op treatment sessions. It eases the ill effects of chemo, reduces stress, and accelerates the healing process. As well as using lay practitioners who have been trained to work in hospital settings, many physicians and nurses are becoming practitioners to directly aid their patients. A recent study shows that as far back as 2002, over one million people had received at least one Reiki treatment. My guess is that the number has increased dramatically since then.
