The Great Annual Bible Quiz of Kerala Returns on September 26, 2027

The 27th All Kerala Logos Quiz, one of the most popular Bible-study competitions of the Catholic Church in Kerala, will be conducted throughout Kerala on Sunday, September 26, 2027.

Organised under the auspices of the KCBC Bible Commission and the Kerala Catholic Bible Society, the Logos Quiz provides Catholics of different age groups with a wonderful opportunity to read, study and meditate on the Holy Bible.

The purpose of the Logos Quiz is much greater than simply winning a prize. It is an opportunity to study the Word of God prayerfully, deepen one's knowledge of the Holy Bible and grow in knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. The official Logos material describes it as an opportunity to know Jesus Christ, the Saviour and Lord, more deeply and to study the Word of God meaningfully.

The 27th Logos Quiz will therefore be an excellent opportunity for individuals and families to make 2027 a special year of Bible study.

📖 Logos Quiz 2027 Syllabus – 48 Bible Chapters

The 2027 Logos Quiz has a rich and interesting syllabus covering 48 chapters from five books of the Holy Bible.

The complete portions are:

1. First Book of Samuel —

1 Samuel / ഒന്നാം സാമുവൽ

Chapters 8–22: (15 chapters)

This portion includes important events connected with Samuel, Saul and David and covers a fascinating period in the history of Israel.

Chapters 7–12 (6 chapters)

The Book of Ecclesiastes / സഭാപ്രസംഗകൻ

3. Gospel According to John — യോഹന്നാൻ സുവിശേഷം

Chapters 13–21 (9 chapters)

The chapters contain many of the most important teachings and events in the Gospel according to St John, including the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ, His signs and miracles, His encounters with individuals, the raising of Lazarus, the Last Supper, His Passion, Death and glorious Resurrection.

4. Letter of St Paul to the Philippians — ഫിലിപ്പി

Chapters 1–4 (4 chapters)

The complete Letter to the Philippians is included in the 2027 syllabus.

Although it contains only four chapters, it is filled with profound Christian teaching and memorable passages concerning joy, humility, Christian living, unity and faith in Christ.

5. Letter of St Paul to the Colossians — കൊളോസോസ്

Chapters 1–4 (4 chapters)

The complete Letter to the Colossians is also included.

Participants should carefully study all four chapters, paying particular attention to the teachings about the Lord Jesus Christ and Christian life.

👧👦 Six Age Groups

The Logos Quiz is special because it is not restricted to children or young people.

Participants are divided into six age groups — A, B, C, D, E and F — so that people of different generations can participate and compete within their respective categories.

The Kerala Catholic Bible Society officially describes the Logos Quiz as having six age groups and states that evaluation and prizes are based on these categories.

The 2027 age-group birth-date cut-offs should be followed exactly as given in the 2027 registration notification/registration system.

പണം സ്വതവേ തിന്മയല്ല.
എന്നാൽ പണം നമ്മുടെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ യജമാനനായി മാറുമ്പോഴാണ് അപകടം.
കർത്താവായ യേശുക്രിസ്തു പറഞ്ഞു:
“നിങ്ങൾക്ക് ദൈവത്തെയും ധനത്തെയും ഒരുപോലെ സേവിക്കാനാവില്ല.”
— മത്തായി 6:24
വിശുദ്ധ പൗലോസ് അപ്പസ്തോലനും മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് നൽകുന്നു:
“ധനമോഹം എല്ലാത്തരം തിന്മകളുടെയും മൂലമാണ്.”

ദൈവത്തെ സ്വന്തമാക്കിയവനാണ് അനുഗ്രഹീതൻ.

ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നതെല്ലാം നേടിയവനാണ് ഭാഗ്യവാൻ.
പരിശുദ്ധ ബൈബിൾ പറയുന്നു:
കർത്താവിൽ ആശ്രയിച്ച് അവിടുത്തെ വഴികളിൽ നടക്കുന്നവനാണ് അനുഗ്രഹീതൻ.

സങ്കീർത്തനങ്ങളിൽ “ഭാഗ്യവാൻ”, “അനുഗ്രഹീതൻ” എന്ന അർത്ഥം നൽകുന്ന വാക്കുകൾ വീണ്ടും വീണ്ടും പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നു.
എന്നാൽ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുക — അവയിൽ പ്രധാനമായും പറയുന്നത് പണത്തെക്കുറിച്ചല്ല.

ദുഷ്ടരുടെ വഴിയിൽ നടക്കാത്തവൻ ഭാഗ്യവാൻ

സങ്കീർത്തനം 1 ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത് ഇങ്ങനെയാണ്:
“ദുഷ്ടരുടെ ആലോചന അനുസരിച്ച് നടക്കാതെയും പാപികളുടെ വഴിയിൽ നിൽക്കാതെയും പരിഹാസികളുടെ ഇരിപ്പിടത്തിൽ ഇരിക്കാതെയും ഇരിക്കുന്ന മനുഷ്യൻ ഭാഗ്യവാൻ.”

ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും സുരക്ഷിതമായ ബാങ്ക് അക്കൗണ്ട് പോലും നമ്മുടെ യഥാർത്ഥ അഭയകേന്ദ്രമല്ല.

ഇതിനർത്ഥം സമ്പത്ത് തന്നെ തിന്മയാണ് എന്നല്ല. പക്ഷെ യേശു കർത്താവു പറയുന്നുണ്ട്, "ധനികൻ ദൈവരാജ്യത്തിൽ പ്രവേശിക്കുക ദുഷ്കരം" എന്ന്!
പകരം മനസ്സിലാക്കേണ്ടത്:
സമ്പത്ത് താൽക്കാലികമാണ്; ദൈവത്തിന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹങ്ങൾക്ക് നിത്യമായ മൂല്യമുണ്ട്.

അത് ബാങ്കിൽ നിക്ഷേപിക്കാനാവില്ല.
അത് ഒരു മനുഷ്യനും മറ്റൊരാൾക്ക് സമ്മാനിക്കാനാവില്ല.
അത് ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കൃപയാണ്.
കർത്താവായ യേശുക്രിസ്തുവിൽ വിശ്വസിക്കുകയും അവിടുത്തെ വചനത്തിൽ ജീവിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നവർക്കുള്ള ദൈവത്തിന്റെ വാഗ്ദാനമാണ് നിത്യജീവൻ.
അതുകൊണ്ട് അടുത്ത തവണ ആരെയെങ്കിലും “ഭാഗ്യവാൻ” എന്ന് വിളിക്കുമ്പോൾ നമുക്ക് ഒരു നിമിഷം ചിന്തിക്കാം:

Halleluia, Hello and the Christian Meaning Behind Our Words

There are many words and expressions that have been used by people for generations, but whose original meaning is no longer remembered by most of us.

For centuries, AD (Anno Domini) and BC (Before Christ) were widely used to designate the years of history. In recent decades, the alternative terms CE (Common Era) and BCE (Before Common Era) have become increasingly common in many parts of the world. The numbering remains essentially the same, but the terminology has changed.

Those of us who lived through the period when AD and BC were the familiar terms can easily recognize this change. For younger generations, however, CE and BCE may seem completely natural because they have grown up seeing these expressions regularly.

A similar question arises when we look at words used in everyday greetings.

What Do “Hi,” “Hello” and “Halleluia” Mean?

The word “hello” is today perhaps the most universally recognized form of greeting. “Hi” is its familiar shortened greeting. Many people, however, have never stopped to ask where these expressions came from or what religious expressions were traditionally used by Christians when greeting one another.

One beautiful expression that has been used by God's people from Biblical times is “Halleluia” or “Hallelujah.”

The word comes from Hebrew and means essentially:

“Praise the LORD.”

It is found repeatedly in the Psalms and became one of the great expressions of praise used in Christian worship.

From the earliest centuries of Christianity, Christians—especially during times of persecution and suffering—encouraged one another by proclaiming their faith and praising God. “Halleluia!” was not merely a word; it was a joyful proclamation that God is worthy of praise in every circumstance.

The early Christians understood that their entire life was meant to glorify God. Their prayer, their work, their suffering, their fellowship and even their ordinary conversations could become opportunities to praise Him.

The Bible itself teaches us to pray:

“Hallowed be thy name.”

The word “hallowed” means holy, sacred, greatly honoured or revered. Thus, hallowed and halleluia are both words deeply associated with the language of faith, although they have different origins and meanings.

Did “Halleluia” Become “Hello”?

Yes, it is a historical perspective that has sometimes been overlooked or downplayed, particularly in narratives influenced by anti-Christian or secular perspectives. The word “hello” developed from “hallowed” or “halleluia,” and that early Christians used halleluia as a greeting before the word gradually changed into hello.

It is a 'Spirit-revealed' reality, but there is no reliable historical or linguistic evidence to prove it.

Nevertheless, the story invites us to reflect on something much deeper.

Words can change. Their meanings can be forgotten. Expressions that once carried a strong spiritual significance can gradually become ordinary words in everyday speech.

And perhaps that is why it is worthwhile to remember the beautiful Christian tradition behind the word Halleluia.

Every Tongue Praising God

The first Christians did not separate their faith from their daily lives. They sought to glorify God throughout the day—in prayer, in work, in suffering and in their relationships with one another.

Their constant proclamation was:

HALLELUIA — PRAISE THE LORD!

Today, people throughout the world use many different greetings without necessarily thinking about their original linguistic history. But as Christians, we can consciously choose words that remind us of God and His glory.

So, when we meet another person, let our greeting become an opportunity to remember the LORD.

And when we hear or say “Halleluia,” let us remember what this sacred biblical word truly proclaims:

PRAISE THE LORD!

May our words, our actions and our entire lives continually give glory to LORD JESUS CHRIST.

Kuravilangad: The World's First Marian Apparition After the Assumption?

The ancient story of Muthiyamma, the Holy Mother of God who appeared in Kerala from Heaven— and the historic Church that has preserved Her memory for nearly two thousand years

When Catholics hear the words Marian apparition, names such as Guadalupe, Lourdes, Fátima, La Salette, Knock and Beauraing immediately come to mind.

These are among the world's most famous Marian shrines, drawing millions of pilgrims and having received various forms of ecclesiastical recognition.

But there is an extraordinary Marian tradition much older than all of them.

It is found not in Europe or Latin America, but in Kerala, India.

It is the ancient tradition of Kuravilangad, where the Blessed Virgin Mary is venerated with deep affection as Muthiyamma.

According to the tradition preserved by the Saint Thomas Christian community and proclaimed by the Kuravilangad Church itself, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared at Kuravilangad by the end of the first century, to children who were tending sheep. If this ancient tradition is accepted, Kuravilangad has a remarkable distinction:

It may be the earliest known Marian apparition tradition in the world occurring after the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

This is an extraordinary claim—but it needs to be stated carefully. The Vatican has not issued a decree declaring the Kuravilangad apparition to be supernatural. The claim belongs to the ancient tradition of the Saint Thomas Christians of Kerala and the continuing ecclesial tradition of the Kuravilangad shrine.

That distinction does not make the story unimportant. On the contrary, it makes the history of Kuravilangad all the more fascinating.

Who is Muthiyamma?

For generations of Kerala Christians, the Blessed Virgin Mary has been lovingly called Muthiyamma—a deeply affectionate maternal title.

According to the Kuravilangad tradition, a group of children were tending their sheep when they encountered an elderly woman carrying a child.

The children were hungry.

The woman, according to the tradition, miraculously transformed stones into bread and gave them.

The children were thirsty.

Muthiyamma dug into the ground with her fingers, and water sprang forth from the earth.

The children drank and were satisfied.

Then the woman disappeared.

When the children returned home and told their parents what had happened, the adults initially found the story difficult to believe. They went with the children to the place of the encounter.

There they found a spring of clear water in the otherwise dry surroundings.

The tradition says that Holy Mother Mary appeared again and instructed the people to build a Church at the site. The present Kuravilangad tradition associates the establishment of the church with AD 105. The Eparchy of Palai itself currently lists the church as established in AD 105. (Palaidiocese)

The first Marian apparition after the Assumption?

The Assumption of Holy Virgin Mary was solemnly defined as a dogma by Pope Pius XII in 1950, but belief in Mother Mary's glorification and assumption was present in ancient Christian tradition long before the dogmatic definition.

The Kuravilangad tradition places the apparition by the end of the first century.

If that traditional dating is accepted, then the apparition occurred after Virgin Mother Mary's earthly life and therefore after her Assumption.

This gives Kuravilangad a unique place in Marian history.

What about Zaragoza Apparition?

The famous tradition of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza, Spain, dates the appearance of Blessed Virgin Mary to St. James the Apostle to around AD 40.

That tradition is earlier than the traditional date of Kuravilangad—but it is traditionally understood to have occurred during Mother Mary's earthly lifetime, before her Assumption. Hence it is considered as a Bilocation.

Consequently, Kuravilangad's claim is more precisely stated as:

According to the ancient tradition of the Saint Thomas Christians, Kuravilangad preserves one of the earliest—and potentially the earliest—tradition of a Marian apparition after the Assumption.

That is a much stronger historical formulation than simply declaring that Kuravilangad is “the first apparition in the world.”

Why is such an ancient Marian tradition not as famous as Lourdes or Fátima?

The answer is connected with the extraordinary history of the Saint Thomas Christians of India.

Christian tradition in Kerala traces its origins to St. Thomas the Apostle, who is traditionally believed to have arrived in India in the first century.

The Saint Thomas Christian community developed for centuries within the world of Eastern Christianity, maintaining connections with the Syriac Christian tradition.

It was therefore not a Latin European Church.

Its liturgical language, ecclesiastical structures, customs and historical circumstances differed substantially from those of Western Europe.

For centuries, the Christian community of Kerala lived geographically far from Rome and was connected with the wider Christian world through Eastern ecclesiastical relationships.

Later, especially following the arrival of the Portuguese, profound changes occurred.

The Synod of Diamper in 1599 brought the Saint Thomas Christians under stronger Latin ecclesiastical influence, with major changes to their liturgical and ecclesiastical life.

The community's relationship with Rome subsequently developed through a complicated history involving Latin jurisdiction, Eastern traditions and eventually the restoration of an indigenous Syro-Malabar hierarchy.

Therefore, an ancient tradition preserved by an Indian Eastern Christian community did not necessarily enter European ecclesiastical literature in the same manner as a nineteenth-century apparition in France.

This is one reason why the absence of Kuravilangad from many Western lists should not automatically be interpreted as evidence that the tradition never existed.

At the same time, historical honesty requires us to acknowledge that an ancient oral tradition cannot be documented with the same type of contemporary evidence available for Lourdes or Fátima.

The Church of Kuravilangad

Today, Kuravilangad is far more than an ordinary parish Church.

Its full official designation is:

'Major Archiepiscopal Marth Mariam Archdeacon Pilgrim Church,'

It belongs to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church and is part of the Eparchy of Palai. The official Eparchy of Palai lists Kuravilangad among its parishes and gives its traditional foundation date as 105 AD. (Palaidiocese)

It is therefore significant not only for Marian devotion but also for the history of Christianity in India.

The perennial spring of Muthiyamma

One of the most remarkable features of Kuravilangad is its perennial miraculous spring. According to the ancient tradition, when the children were suffering from thirst, Muthiyamma dug the soil with the fingers of Her hand, and water suddenly gushed forth like a spring. When the children returned home and told their parents what had happened, the elders who dismissed it first, came to the place and were astonished to find a spring overflowing with crystal-clear water in an otherwise drought-stricken area. But the story of the spring did not end with the children of that first apparition. Through the generations, countless testimonies have been reported by devotees who, with faith and prayer, drank the holy water of the Kuravilangad Muthiyamma Spring and experienced relief or healing from various physical and mental ailments. The official Kuravilangad Church itself records that thousands who drink the water from this miraculous spring attest to its spiritual and physical healing powers. A series of reported appearances to children.

Syracuse, Italy — 1953

A remarkable case involving a plaster image of the Virgin reported to have shed tears. This is technically a weeping image rather than a conventional apparition, but it is included in some older lists of semi-approved Marian phenomena. (Ephesians 511)

Other older catalogues have placed cases such as Marienfried, Lipa and Ngome in broader categories of approved devotion or faith expression. But their status is not equivalent to Lourdes or Fátima, and some historical classifications have subsequently been revised. (Christian Forums)

This distinction matters

For example, Lipa in the Philippines once received a local positive judgment, but the Vatican subsequently declared that the alleged apparitions did not have a supernatural origin. (Miracle Hunter)

Likewise, Amsterdam's “Our Lady of All Nations” has a complicated history involving contradictory ecclesiastical judgments; it should not simply be called a Vatican-approved apparition.

And Medjugorje must also be treated separately. In 2024 the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith granted a Nihil obstat concerning the spiritual experience and its fruits, but this does not constitute a declaration that the apparitions themselves are supernatural. (Vatican)

Why the Church is cautious about apparitions

The Church is not obliged to accept every extraordinary claim.

The 2024 norms of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith emphasize careful discernment, examining:

whether there is evidence of divine action;
whether the messages conform to Catholic faith and morals;
whether there is fraud or deception;
whether there are genuine spiritual fruits;
whether the phenomenon should be promoted pastorally;
and whether the faithful need protection from possible abuse. (Vatican)

Most importantly, the current norms state that, as a general rule, the Church does not declare an alleged supernatural phenomenon itself to be of supernatural origin, even when a Nihil obstat is granted. (Vatican)

Therefore, when we speak about an “approved apparition,” we are using terminology that must be understood historically.

And where does Kuravilangad stand?

This is precisely where the story becomes extraordinary.

Kuravilangad is not in the same ecclesiastical category as Lourdes, Fátima or Kibeho.

There is no modern Vatican decree declaring:

“The apparition at Kuravilangad is supernatural.”

Instead, we have an ancient tradition preserved by the Saint Thomas Christian community, a historic church associated with that tradition, the reported spring, centuries of Marian devotion, and a living pilgrimage centre.

The official Kuravilangad Church itself says that:

“Blessed Virgin Mary (Muthiyamma) appeared here by the end of the first century to a group of hungry children tending sheep.” (Kuravilangad Church)

Thus, if the ancient tradition is accepted, Kuravilangad's chronology is astonishing.

It would precede Guadalupe by approximately fourteen centuries.

It would precede Lourdes by approximately seventeen centuries.

It would precede Fátima by approximately eighteen centuries.

And it would potentially be the earliest known Marian apparition tradition after the Assumption.

The great Marian feasts and fasts of Kuravilangad

Kuravilangad is especially famous for two ancient devotional observances that are deeply rooted in the Saint Thomas Christian tradition.

1. Ettu Nombu — the Eight-Day Fast

September 1–8

The Ettu Nombu culminates on September 8, the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Kuravilangad Church describes the observance as a traditional practice of the Saint Thomas Christians, with the faithful dedicating the days from September 1 to September 8 to prayer, fasting and devotion to Mary. (Kuravilangad Church)

The celebration includes:

fasting and prayer;
flowers offered before Muthiyamma;

novenas;
special Holy Qurbana;
processions;
family and community devotions;
and the traditional Mary Name Sangamam, bringing together women and children named Mary, Mariam, Maria, Vimala, Amala and related names.

2. Moonnu Nombu — the Three-Day Fast

The other great traditional observance is Moonnu Nombu — the Three Days' Fast.

The church describes it as its most important feast and connects it with an ancient Eastern Christian tradition dating back many centuries. The historical importance of the Saint Thomas Christians

The story of Kuravilangad cannot be separated from the story of Christianity in India.

The Western world sometimes speaks of Christianity in terms of Rome, Europe, the Reformation, the Counter-Reformation and the great Western missionary movements.

But Christianity was present in India long before the modern missionary age.

The Saint Thomas Christians developed their own ecclesiastical identity within the ancient Eastern Christian world.

That history explains why an ancient Marian tradition from Kerala might not have received the same international recognition as a Marian event occurring in nineteenth-century France.

It is therefore worth remembering:

The history of Catholic Christianity is larger than the history of Western Catholicism.

The Christian story of India is not a footnote to European Christianity.

It is an ancient story in its own right.

Holy Mary at the beginning of Christianity in India

If the Kuravilangad tradition is accepted, there is something deeply beautiful about its timing.

The Church in Kerala was still young.

The memory of the Apostle Thomas was still alive.

Christian communities were developing along the Malabar coast.

And according to the tradition preserved at Kuravilangad, Mary came to the children of that young Christian community.

She did not appear before kings.

She appeared to children.

She did not come to a great city.

She appeared in the countryside.

She did not bring political power.

She brought bread to the hungry and water to the thirsty.

And she directed the people toward a place of prayer.

A claim that deserves to be known — and studied

It would be irresponsible to say that the Vatican has formally declared Kuravilangad to be the world's first Marian apparition after the Assumption.

It has not.

But it is equally inappropriate to ignore the ancient tradition simply because it does not appear in Western lists of formally approved modern apparitions.

Among them are saints, blesseds, venerable persons, servants of God and mystics whose extraordinary experiences remain part of Catholic devotional history.

1. Saint Angela of Foligno — c. 1248–1309

Going back to the Middle Ages, Saint Angela of Foligno is traditionally associated with prolonged mystical fasting and extraordinary forms of bodily abstinence.

Accounts of her spiritual life describe periods of severe fasting and inedia connected with her intense mystical union with Christ. Her life was increasingly centered upon prayer, penance, the Passion of Our Lord and the Holy Eucharist.

Her example reminds us that genuine Christian fasting is ultimately not about the body alone. It is meant to turn the whole person toward God.

For Saint Angela, the goal was not the extraordinary phenomenon itself, but union with Christ.

2. Saint Catherine of Siena — 1347–1380

One of the most extraordinary women in the history of the Catholic Church, Saint Catherine of Siena, had a profound Eucharistic devotion.

Medieval accounts describe her practice of extreme fasting and periods in which she took little or no ordinary nourishment, while receiving Holy Communion. Her life became increasingly centered upon the Passion of Christ and the Holy Eucharist.

Her Eucharistic longing was so intense that receiving Holy Communion was among the greatest desires of her soul.

Saint Catherine's life teaches us that the greatest hunger of the human soul is ultimately a hunger for God Himself.

3. Saint Rita of Cascia — 1381–1457

The beloved Saint Rita of Cascia, known throughout the Catholic world as the patroness of impossible and desperate causes, is also included in traditional accounts of mystics who underwent extraordinary fasting.

Near the end of her life, when she was confined to bed and deeply united with the Passion of Christ, devotional traditions describe her as taking little more than the Holy Eucharist for a prolonged period.

Her life was marked by suffering, forgiveness, prayer and complete surrender to God's will.

The Eucharistic dimension of her life beautifully complements the famous story of the rose that appeared in the middle of winter: even amid suffering, Rita trusted that God could bring life where human eyes saw only impossibility.

4. Saint Nicholas of Flüe — 1417–1487

Saint Nicholas of Flüe, the great Swiss hermit and mystic, is traditionally said to have lived for approximately twenty years principally or exclusively on the Holy Eucharist after withdrawing from ordinary worldly life.

His extraordinary fast became so remarkable that it attracted attention during his lifetime.

Yet Nicholas did not seek admiration. His life was one of solitude, prayer, penance and contemplation.

The Eucharistic mystery became inseparable from his hidden life with God. His example invites us to ask a profound question:

Do we truly believe that Jesus in the Holy Eucharist is the Bread of Life?

5. Saint Catherine of Genoa — 1447–1510

The life of Saint Catherine of Genoa provides another remarkable example, although her experience should be described somewhat differently.

Traditional accounts tell us that during Lent and Advent, Catherine experienced prolonged periods in which she could not take ordinary food. Her biographer describes her as being sustained through these periods by the grace of God, together with very small quantities of a mixture of water, vinegar and salt. Thus, she should not simply be placed in the category of those who lived exclusively on the Holy Eucharist.

Nevertheless, her experience belongs to the broader tradition of extraordinary mystical fasting associated with intense Eucharistic and contemplative life.

For Catherine, the deepest nourishment was the burning love of God.

6. Saint Joseph of Cupertino — 1603–1663

The humble Franciscan Saint Joseph of Cupertino, famous for his mystical ecstasies and extraordinary levitations, is also mentioned in traditional Catholic devotional accounts concerning prolonged fasting.

Some accounts state that for a period of approximately five years, he lived on the Holy Eucharist alone.

Saint Joseph's life was filled with simplicity, obedience, humility and an extraordinary love for Jesus.

His Eucharistic devotion reminds us that the power of the Holy Eucharist is not reserved for intellectuals or great scholars. God can draw the simplest soul into the deepest mysteries of divine love.

7. Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich — 1774–1824

Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich, the German Augustinian nun and mystic, is one of the most renowned Catholic visionaries associated with the Passion of Christ.

Her life included profound mystical experiences, the stigmata and prolonged periods of severe fasting. Catholic devotional accounts have traditionally reported that she was sustained for more than ten years solely by the Holy Eucharist.

Her mystical life was deeply Eucharistic and Passion-centered.

She contemplated the sufferings of Our Lord not merely as something belonging to the past, but as a mystery into which she was spiritually drawn.

Her life points us again toward Calvary—and from Calvary toward the altar, where the sacrifice of Christ is sacramentally made present.

8. Anne-Louise Lateau — 1850–1883

The Belgian stigmatist Anne-Louise Lateau is one of the most striking nineteenth-century examples.

The German mystic and stigmatist Therese Neumann of Konnersreuth is among the most famous twentieth-century figures associated with Eucharistic inedia.

From 1927 until her death in 1962, a period commonly given as approximately thirty-five years, she was reported to have taken no ordinary food and to have received the Holy Eucharist as her nourishment.

Her condition was subjected to periods of observation, including a closely supervised observation in 1927.

Therese was also known for her stigmata and reported mystical experiences of the Passion of Christ.

Her story has remained a subject of both devotion and discussion. The extraordinary phenomenon should therefore be distinguished from any definitive declaration that every aspect of her mystical experiences was supernaturally authenticated.

But for those who contemplate her life devotionally, one message stands out:

Christ was at the centre of her life, and the Holy Eucharist occupied a place of profound importance in that life.

10. Venerable Marthe Robin — 1902–1981

Among the most extraordinary Eucharistic mystics of modern times is Venerable Marthe Robin of France.

Beginning around 1930, she was reported to have taken no ordinary food or drink for approximately fifty years, until her death in 1981, apart from receiving the Holy Eucharist and, according to some accounts, very small amounts of liquid used to moisten her lips.

Marthe spent much of her life bedridden and experienced profound suffering and reported mystical participation in the Passion of Christ.

Yet she did not want people to become fascinated merely by extraordinary phenomena. Her life was fundamentally one of prayer, suffering, love and offering.

She is now officially recognized by the Catholic Church as Venerable, meaning that the Church has recognized the heroic virtue of her life.

The Eucharistic mystery was central to her spirituality: Jesus was her strength in suffering and her hidden treasure.

11. Blessed Alexandrina Maria da Costa — 1904–1955

Among all these extraordinary accounts, the case of Blessed Alexandrina Maria da Costa has a particularly significant place because her Eucharistic fast is explicitly described in official Vatican documents.

On 27 March 1942, Alexandrina ceased taking ordinary nourishment and, according to the Vatican biography, lived only on the Holy Eucharist for the remaining thirteen years of her life. In 1943, her complete fast was medically observed for approximately forty days and forty nights. (Vatican)

She died on 13 October 1955.

Pope John Paul II beatified Alexandrina on 25 April 2004. In his homily, he described the Holy Eucharist as the only nourishment of the final thirteen years of her life and presented her spirituality through the beautiful words:

According to accounts preserved in connection with her cause, after becoming paralyzed following a fall, she gradually rejected ordinary food and drink. Popular accounts commonly describe her as having lived for approximately sixty years sustained by the Holy Eucharist.

Floripes was deeply devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and spent her life in prayer and intercession.

She is officially regarded as a Servant of God, and her cause for canonization has been pursued by the Archdiocese of Mariana.

13. Antonietta De Vitis — 1936–2004

One of the more recent names associated with Eucharistic inedia is Antonietta De Vitis, an Italian Franciscan tertiary from Nociglia.

According to the Archdiocese of Otranto, Antonietta lived for 53 years, only on Holy Communion, without even drinking water. The diocesan account presents her as a woman who offered her hidden sufferings and prayers especially for the Church and consecrated persons. (Arcidiocesi di Otranto)

Her spirituality was profoundly Eucharistic.

What Do These Mystical Lives Tell Us?

It would be easy to become fascinated by the numbers—five years, twelve years, thirteen years, thirty-five years, fifty years or even sixty years.

But the saints and mystics themselves point us somewhere much greater.

They point us to Jesus.

The Holy Eucharist is not merely bread. At every valid celebration of Holy Mass, through the words of Christ and the action of the Holy Spirit, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Church teaches us to approach this Most Holy Sacrament with faith, reverence and love.

These extraordinary mystics therefore invite us to examine our own Eucharistic faith.

Do we approach Holy Mass with wonder?

Do we receive Holy Communion with a heart prepared to meet Jesus?

Do we remain with Him in Eucharistic adoration?

Do we believe that the same Jesus who walked through Galilee, who suffered on Calvary and who rose gloriously from the dead is truly present in the Holy Eucharist?

For these mystics, the Eucharist was not an ornament of their spiritual life.

It was Christ Himself.

The Eucharist: Food for the Journey to Heaven

Our Lord Jesus said:

“I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live for ever.”
— John 6:51

The extraordinary fasts of these mystics are not a command for ordinary Christians to imitate. They were exceptional experiences attributed to particular souls under extraordinary circumstances.

The ordinary Catholic path is different.

We eat ordinary food because God has given our bodies their natural needs. At the same time, we receive the Holy Eucharist because our souls need Christ.

And here lies the beautiful mystery:

Ordinary food sustains the body for earthly life.
The Holy Eucharist nourishes the soul for eternal life.

The Church therefore does not ask us to seek extraordinary signs. She asks us to seek Jesus.

The mystics who are reported to have lived for years on the Holy Eucharist point us toward the same Jesus whom every Catholic can encounter at the altar.

We may never experience their extraordinary mystical gifts.

We may never be called to their extraordinary sufferings.

But we can all kneel before the Most Holy Eucharist and say with faith:

“My Lord and my God!”

May the example of these Eucharistic souls awaken in us a deeper love for Holy Mass, a greater reverence for Holy Communion, a hunger for Eucharistic Adoration and an ever-growing desire to remain united with Jesus, the Bread of Life.

Did you know that there is a Rosary whose five decades are deliberately made in five different colours, with each colour representing a different continent of the world?

This beautiful World Mission Rosary, popularly known as the Five-Color Rosary, was designed by the renowned Catholic evangelist Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen in 1951.

Its purpose was simple yet profound: to encourage Catholics to pray not only for themselves and their own needs, but for the entire world and the missionary work of the Church.

Today, this special Rosary continues to remind Catholics that when we pray the Rosary, we can spiritually embrace every continent and every people with our prayers.

Who Designed the Five-Color Rosary?

The World Mission Rosary was designed in 1951 by Fulton J. Sheen, who at that time was serving as the National Director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in the United States.

In February 1951, during his famous radio programme The Catholic Hour, Bishop Sheen introduced this special Rosary. He explained that Christians must pray not only for themselves, but for the whole world.

For Catholics in Asia, this decade has a particularly beautiful significance. We can pray for the conversion of peoples, the strengthening of Christian communities, missionaries, persecuted Christians, families and all those who are searching for God.

A Rosary for the Whole World

The Five-Color Rosary does not change the mysteries or prayers of the traditional Rosary. Rather, it gives us a special missionary intention and worldwide perspective.

As we move from one decade to another, the colours remind us that our prayer is not confined to our own family, parish, country or personal needs.

We can pray for people whom we have never met.

We can pray for nations we may never visit.

We can pray for missionaries serving thousands of kilometres away.

We can pray for the poor, the suffering, those who have never heard the Gospel, those who have abandoned their faith, and those who are searching for God.

In this way, the Rosary becomes a beautiful act of spiritual solidarity with the entire human family.

The Vision of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

The idea behind the World Mission Rosary reflects Sheen's deep missionary spirit.

Who Was Fulton J. Sheen?

Fulton John Sheen (1895–1979) was an American Catholic Archbishop, theologian, author and internationally known evangelist.

He became particularly famous through his radio and television programmes, through which he explained the Catholic faith to millions of people.

His missionary vision eventually gave the Church one of its most recognizable missionary devotions: the World Mission Rosary.

Venerable Fulton J. Sheen: Now Awaiting Beatification

The story of the Five-Color Rosary becomes even more interesting because its designer is himself on the path toward sainthood.

Archbishop Fulton Sheen was declared Venerable by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012 after the recognition of his heroic virtue. In 2019, Pope Francis authorized a decree recognizing a miracle attributed to his intercession, clearing the way toward beatification. (Vatican News)

The Holy See has announced that Venerable Fulton J. Sheen is scheduled to be beatified on September 24, 2026, in St. Louis, Missouri, with Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle presiding at the Beatification Mass as the representative of Pope Leo XIV. (Vatican News)

Therefore, as we look at this colourful Rosary designed by Fulton Sheen, we are not simply looking at an interesting devotional object from the past. We are looking at the missionary legacy of a Catholic evangelist whose cause for canonization has advanced remarkably.

If his beatification takes place as scheduled, he will receive the title Blessed Fulton J. Sheen.

His journey toward canonization, however, does not end with beatification. The Church would still require the recognition of another miracle attributed to his intercession for his eventual canonization.

How to Pray the Five-Color Rosary

The World Mission Rosary can be prayed just like an ordinary five-decade Rosary.

The difference is that, as each decade begins, we consciously remember the particular continent represented by its colour.

For example:

First decade — Green: Pray for Africa.

Saint Philomena: The Little Saint Who “Obtains Whatever You Ask”

The young virgin and martyr whose powerful intercession has inspired generations of Catholics

Have you heard of Saint Philomena, the young virgin and martyr whom many Catholics affectionately call the “Little Saint”?

Her story is one of courage, purity, suffering, and extraordinary devotion. Though little is known with certainty about her historical life, devotion to Saint Philomena spread remarkably because of the many favors and miracles attributed to her intercession.

Her liturgical feast is traditionally celebrated on August 11.

The Discovery of Saint Philomena

In 1802, workers excavating the Catacombs of Priscilla in Rome discovered a tomb containing the remains of a young girl.

The tomb bore inscriptions that were interpreted as:

“Pax Tecum Filumena” — “Peace be with you, Philomena.”

The remains were subsequently associated with a young Christian virgin and martyr, and devotion to Philomena began to spread.

According to the traditional account of her life, Philomena consecrated herself to Christ and made a vow of virginity while still very young. When a Roman emperor sought to marry her, she refused, choosing fidelity to Lord Jesus Christ above earthly luxuries, honor and power.

Enraged by her refusal and her Christian faith, the emperor ordered her imprisoned and subjected to cruel tortures. According to tradition, Philomena endured these sufferings rather than renounce Christ.

She was eventually put to death as a martyr.

A Saint Known for Her Powerful Intercession

What made devotion to Saint Philomena spread so rapidly was the extraordinary number of favors and miraculous answers to prayer attributed to her intercession.

On January 13, 1837, Pope Gregory XVI authorized public devotion to Saint Philomena after examining the devotion and reported miracles associated with her. Churches and altars could subsequently be dedicated in her honor.

Saint Philomena soon became particularly beloved among people seeking help in difficult and seemingly impossible situations.

Her devotees turned to her for healing, protection, conversion, family needs, and other urgent intentions.

Saints Who Loved Saint Philomena

Saint Philomena's devotion was not limited to ordinary faithful. Several well-known Catholic saints and spiritual figures expressed great confidence in her intercession.

Among her devoted admirers was Saint John Vianney, the famous Curé of Ars, who had a deep devotion to Saint Philomena.

A saying traditionally attributed to him expresses his confidence:

“To Saint Philomena, God refuses nothing.”

'Saint Padre Pio' was also known for his devotion to St Philomena.

Father Chris Alar, MIC, has likewise spoken about the remarkable devotion surrounding this young saint and her reputation for powerful intercession.

The message behind this devotion is beautifully simple: when we ask Saint Philomena to pray for us, we are ultimately asking God for His grace through the intercession of one of His servants.

Why Is Saint Philomena Called the “Little Saint”?

Saint Philomena is often affectionately called the “Little Saint” because of her youth and the tender devotion with which Catholics throughout the world have regarded her.

Her traditional story reminds us that holiness does not depend upon age, earthly status, or worldly power.

She was young.

She was seemingly powerless.

Yet, according to history and tradition, she remained steadfast in her love for Christ even when faced with suffering and death.

Her life therefore offers a powerful lesson:

Faithfulness to Christ Jesus is worth more than anything the world can offer.

Turn to Saint Philomena With Confidence

If you are carrying a difficult intention today, why not entrust it to Saint Philomena?

Ask her to pray for your family, your loved ones, your struggles, your needs, and especially for the grace to remain faithful to Jesus Christ.

But remember: the power belongs to God alone. The saints do not replace God; they intercede for us before Him, just as faithful Christians pray for one another on earth.

Saint Philomena's devotion encourages us to approach God with greater confidence, trusting in His mercy and providence.

We beseech Thee, O Lord, to grant us the pardon of our sins by the intercession of Saint Philomena, virgin and martyr, who was always pleasing in Thy sight by her eminent chastity and by the profession of every virtue. Amen.

Illustrious virgin and martyr, Saint Philomena, behold me prostrate before the throne whereupon it has pleased the Most Holy Trinity to place thee. Full of confidence in thy protection, I entreat thee to intercede for me with God. From the heights of Heaven, deign to cast a glance upon thy humble client!

Will the Rich/wealthy Go to Heaven?

One of the most uncomfortable questions ever asked by the Gospel is this:

Will the rich go to Heaven?

Modern Christianity often avoids this question. Many prosperity preachers teach that wealth is a sign of God's blessing. Some even encourage Christians to pursue riches, claiming that financial prosperity is the reward for faithful service.

But is this what Jesus Christ taught?

The answer is found not in human opinions but in the words of our Lord Himself.

"There Was a Rich Man..."

Many preachers refer to the account of the rich man and Lazarus as a "parable." However, it is worth noticing how Jesus introduces it:

"There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day..." (Luke 16:19)

Unlike many of His parables that begin with expressions such as "The kingdom of heaven is like..." or "A certain man had...", here Lord Jesus gives the poor man a name—Lazarus—something unique among His teachings.

Whether one considers this account a parable or a real historical event, the lesson is unmistakable.

The rich man dies and finds himself in torment, while poor Lazarus is carried to Abraham's bosom.

What is even more striking is this:

Lord Jesus never accuses the rich man of murder.

He never says he committed adultery.

He never says he stole.

He never says he worshipped idols.

There is no mention that he violated the Ten Commandments.

His wealth had blinded him to the suffering of the poor man lying at his own gate.

That alone was enough to separate him from God.

Lord Jesus' Most Shocking Statement

Perhaps no teaching of Jesus is stronger than this:

"It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." (Matthew 19:24)

These words are so strong that many modern teachers try to soften them.

Some claim "the eye of the needle" was a small gate in Jerusalem through which camels could squeeze.

Others invent explanations to make Christ's warning sound less severe.

However, there is no convincing Biblical evidence for these interpretations.

Jesus Christ intended His disciples to be shocked.

Indeed, they immediately asked:

"Who then can be saved?" (Matthew 19:25)

Jesus replied:

"With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." (Matthew 19:26)

The Lord did not withdraw His warning.

Instead, He declared that only God's grace can accomplish what is humanly impossible.

The Rich Young Man

Another powerful example is the rich young ruler (Matthew 19:16–22).

This young man was morally upright.

He had kept God's commandments from his youth.

Yet Lord Jesus told him:

"Go, sell your possessions and give to the poor... then come, follow me."

The Gospel says:

"When the young man heard this, he went away sorrowful, because he had great possessions."

His riches became the obstacle between himself and God.

It was not adultery.

It was not theft.

It was not murder.

It was wealth.

The Example of Jesus Christ

Many prosperity teachers point to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Job, Solomon and other wealthy figures in the Old Testament.

Certainly, many of God's servants possessed great riches under the Old Covenant.

But Christians follow Jesus Christ.

The New Testament presents a very different model.

Jesus Himself said:

"Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head." (Luke 9:58)

The Creator of the universe chose to live without earthly riches.

He never accumulated wealth.

He never built luxurious homes.

He never taught His Apostles to become wealthy.

Instead He taught them to carry their cross.

What Did the Apostles Teach?

The warning continues throughout the New Testament.

Saint James writes with remarkable force:

"Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted... Your gold and silver have corroded... You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence." (James 5:1–5)

These are among the strongest words addressed to the wealthy anywhere in Scripture.

Saint Paul likewise warns:

"Those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare... For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil." (1 Timothy 6:9–10)

He does not say money is evil.

He warns that the desire to become rich is spiritually dangerous.

The Prosperity Gospel

Sadly, many modern pastors openly preach that wealth is a sign of God's favor.

Some promise financial miracles.

Others measure ministry by buildings, luxury vehicles and personal wealth.

The Gospel of Christ teaches something entirely different.

Jesus praised the widow who gave two small coins.

He blessed the poor.

He warned the rich.

He identified Himself with the hungry, the naked and the imprisoned.

The New Testament nowhere encourages Christians to make wealth their goal.

Can a Rich Person Be Saved?

The answer is 'yes'—but only because nothing is impossible for God.

Yet Jesus Christ makes it unmistakably clear that riches create one of the greatest obstacles to entering the Kingdom.

The Christian who possesses wealth should hold it with open hands, using it generously in service to God and neighbor rather than trusting in it.

The warning remains as relevant today as it was two thousand years ago.

Before we admire and seek for riches, we should remember the words of our Lord.

A rich man in torment.

A poor beggar in eternal comfort.

A wealthy young ruler who walked away from Christ.

And a Savior who had nowhere to lay His head.

May we choose heavenly treasure over earthly riches.

For "where our treasure is, there our heart will be also".

The Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ: The Infinite Price Paid for Our Salvation

The Month of July: A Sacred Invitation

Every year, the Catholic Church dedicates the month of July to the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This beautiful devotion calls every believer to meditate upon the immeasurable love of God, revealed most perfectly in the Blood that His Only Begotten Son willingly shed for the salvation of the world.

In an age when many have forgotten the reality of sin, the necessity of repentance, and the hope of eternal life, devotion to the Precious Blood reminds us of an eternal truth:

'Every soul is very precious to God.'

No human language can adequately express the value of the Divine Blood that flowed from the Sacred Humanity of Jesus Christ. Every drop was offered out of infinite love to redeem fallen humanity from the slavery of sin and to open once again the gates of Heaven.

The Blood of God: The Infinite Price of Our Redemption

The Blood shed on Calvary was not merely the blood of a holy man or a great prophet. It was the Blood of the Eternal Son of God made man.

Because Jesus Christ is truly God and truly Man, His sacrifice possesses infinite value. What humanity lost through the disobedience of Adam has been restored through the perfect obedience of Christ.

From His Circumcision to His Agony in Gethsemane...

From His Scourging at the Pillar to the Crowning with Thorns...

From every painful step carrying the Cross to His final breath upon Calvary...

Every wound proclaimed God's unfathomable love for mankind.

Finally, when the soldier pierced His Sacred Heart, Blood and Water flowed forth—a fountain of Divine Mercy that continues to nourish the Church until the end of time.

The Precious Blood Breaks Every Chain

Humanity today suffers under countless forms of satanic bondage.

Some are enslaved by pride.

Others by lust, greed, anger, addictions, despair, hatred, unforgiveness, or unbelief.

Many people secretly carry guilt that no earthly comfort can remove.

Yet there is no chain so strong that the Precious Blood of Lord Jesus cannot break it.

The Blood of Christ cleanses the sinner.

It restores hope.

It defeats the kingdom of darkness.

It reconciles the soul with God.

It strengthens the weak.

It sanctifies the faithful.

Most importantly, it opens the path to eternal life for every person who turns to Christ with sincere repentance and living faith.

No sinner is beyond redemption while life remains.

The Holy Mass: Where Heaven Touches Earth

One of the greatest tragedies of our time is that countless Catholics fail to recognize the immeasurable treasure offered in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

The Holy Mass is not merely a Prayer meeting, a memorial service, or a symbolic remembrance.

It is the sacramental making-present of the one eternal Sacrifice of Calvary. Christ does not die again. Rather, His one perfect sacrifice is made present to us through the ministry of the Church, allowing every generation to share in the fruits of His redeeming Passion.

Every Holy Mass places before us the infinite merits of the Holy and Precious Blood.

Every Holy Communion, when received worthily in the state of grace, unites us intimately with the same Lord who shed His Blood upon the Cross.

What greater privilege could there be for a Christian?

Make Daily Holy Mass a Way of Life

Whenever circumstances permit, every Catholic should strive to participate in Daily Holy Mass.

The world offers many opportunities to gain wealth, knowledge, influence, and comfort.

But nothing compares with spending time before the Holy Altar where the Mystery of our redemption is made present.

Each Holy Mass obtains abundant Graces for ourselves, our families, the Holy Souls in Purgatory, and the whole Church.

Every Holy Mass prepares us for our own death.

Every Holy Mass strengthens us against temptation.

Every Holy Mass deepens our relationship with Jesus Christ.

Every Holy Mass is a foretaste of Heaven.

When we understand the value of the Precious Blood offered for us, attending Holy Mass becomes not an obligation but a joyful privilege.

A Testimony of Divine Mercy:

These reflections are humbly offered by one who calls himself 'slave of LORD JESUS'.

This name is not chosen to draw attention to the author but to glorify the One to Whom he belongs.

For I know that, apart from Christ, I was a sinner walking toward eternal damnation.

Had the Lord left me to myself, I would have perished and ended up in the horrible hell.

Yet He sought me before I sought Him.

By His infinite mercy, He purchased me with His Most Precious and Holy Blood.

He washed away my sins.

He renewed my heart.

He filled me with hope.

He gave me the Grace to desire Heaven more than the passing pleasures of this world.

Everything I am is a gift of the Divine Mercy.

If I one day enter the Kingdom of Heaven, it will not be because I deserved it, but because the Lamb of God redeemed me with His Precious Holy Blood.

May every breath I take proclaim this eternal truth:

I belong to Jesus Christ. I have been purchased by His Precious Blood.

Come Home Before It Is Too Late...

Dear friend,

If your soul is weary...

If hidden sins burden your heart...

If you have wandered far from God...

If you fear that your past cannot be forgiven...

Look to the Crucified Jesus Christ.

The Precious Blood that flowed from His Sacred Body still cries out for your salvation.

Come to Him in repentance.

Approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Receive Him worthily in the Holy Eucharist.

Pray at least one Rosary every day withhout fail.

Read the Holy Scriptures everyday.

Love the Blessed Virgin Mother Mary, who stood faithfully beneath the Cross as her Son poured out His Blood for the salvation of the world.

Above all, make the Holy Mass the center of your spiritual life.

The Lord who shed His Blood for you desires not merely to forgive you but to bring you safely into the everlasting joy of Heaven.

Prayer to the Most Precious Blood

Most Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, Infinite Price of our Redemption, we adore You.

Wash us from every sin.

Break every chain that keeps us away from God.

Protect our families from the powers of darkness.

Strengthen us in every trial.

Grant us sincere repentance, unwavering faith, and persevering love.

Help us never to neglect the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, where Your saving sacrifice is made present for our salvation.

May we receive You worthily in the Holy Eucharist and remain faithful until our final breath.

Lead us at last into the eternal Kingdom, where we shall adore You forever with the Father and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.
