If those who have more are satisfied with less, then those who have less are subject to the former's charity. Why? In a growing economy poorer people will try to get money from the richer people in exchange for new services or products. If the latter don't need further services, they are pretty much out of luck.

This mechanism explains why an economy evolves and grows, while ressource consumption might not grow.

For example some people are now developing thorium-fueled cars. If these became mainstream, oil demand would plummet, whereas Thorium-mining would not grow in the slightest. Still, more People will want cars, and they will get them -> Economy grows.

Same goes with most "green" technologies, which attempt to flatten the ressource consumption curves.

All predictions of exponential population growth will overshoot, because education is spreading virally and education has always meant less population growth.

I believe in the buddhist principle to be satisfied with less, but I don't see how a non-buddhist country could implement any of the "buddhist economy" principles.

Awesome article. Everyone in my family has owned cats, I'm assuming since we immigrated here. Cats in my family are regarded almost above human family, and were always toting them around wherever we go, speaking with them as we would a human. No one in my family, that I know of has had a broken bone, or any physical ailments at that. The only person in my family who has any problems is my older sis who is allergic to cats and doesn't let them in her house. Its a shame what they can do for us, and how we disregard them in return.

Jammin, this whole post is a quote from Ajahn Brahm, we can agree or disagree with him. I myself don't agree with a few of the points he made, I consider them just as his opinion. Specifically on "someone got a Nobel prize for proving an exception to the second law of thermodynamics", I think he was referring to Ilya Prigogine. You can google 'Ilya Prigogine "second law of thermodynamics" broken'
Then again not every scientist agrees with Prigogine, and even the word entropy has seceral meanings

If it is true would it have been difficult to provide the persons name and even better a link to an authoritative article on this ground breaking work?
