Vivitar 70-210mm f/3.5 Series 1

2013-09-11T14:46:00.002-07:00

These days we're heading to have a appear at yet another lens that I've utilised a few moments on a electronic digicam, but by no means on one particular of the film bodies for which it was produced. In this case it is a Vivitar 70-210mm f/three.five Sequence one, mounted on an Olympus OM-2N.

Here's what it seems to be like:
The lens was a lot more of a specification than a single product - Vivitar bought several diverse 70-210mm f/3.5 designs all through the seventies and eighties. Mine is the Mark II variation, which appears to have emerged in the late seventies the first was launched in the early 1970s and was greater and heavier, with "wings" in close proximity to the lens mount and a closer macro. The MkII was made by Tokina.

In the 1970s the idea of a decently quick telephoto zoom with very good sharpness and shut concentrating was powerfully attractive, and the 70-210mm f/three.five remained on a sale for years. It pops up as late D as 1985 in Popular Images adverts, together with a newer f/two.8 model, which was apparently not as great. By 1985 it offered for $109, vs $119 for a Nikon 105mm f/two.5.

It is probably the only zoom lens that at any time photographed Michael Jackson's penis.

The lens is prone to flare if you stage it towards the solar not usually a problem in England.

No, severely. In 1993 Sergeant Gary Spiegel of the LAPD was asked to photograph Michael Jackson's penis as component of the Jordan Chandler molestation investigation. According to Be Careful Who You Love, a money-in account of the scenario, Spiegel carried "a Canon AE-one Program 35mm digital camera with a Vivitar Series 1 28-90mm zoom lens connected to the camera and a Vivitar product 283 flash device detached with a remote sensor wire [plus] a next lens, which was a Vivitar Series 1, 70-210mm zoom lens", which was meant for close-up pictures. As they pulled down Michael Jackson's shorts his manner was described as 1 of hostility and anger, which is unsurprising if the LAPD tried to pull down my shorts I would be hostile and indignant as well.

Unless of course, I dunno, there was a serial killer likely all around bursting individuals with his enormous cock, and they suspected that I was the culprit. That would be flattering. I would probably be quite popular in jail. Still, as I hold my drive-pull Vivitar 70-210mm f/3.five I uncover it difficult not to feel of Michael Jackson, and also David Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth, which could almost be subtitled The Michael Jackson Tale (As Informed by Michael Jackson). His cock also seems in that film. David Bowie's cock. Which he seemingly named "the lance of really like", according to former wife Angie Bowie.

But the lens, what is actually it like? On a film camera? Issue mark? It truly is not poor at all. Black, so it really is inconspicuous well-produced, so it isn't going to rattle massive manual emphasis / zoom ring, so it truly is straightforward to compose with. 70mm is marginally way too slender for an daily walkabout lens and f/three.5 is not a lot use indoors, but the same is correct of any other comparable zoom. As a specification, 70/eighty-200/210mm with a continual aperture was common until finally the nineties, when it was displaced by slower, lengthier 70-300mm f/four-five.6 picture stabilised lenses and more quickly, much more pricey 70-200mm f/2.8 types. The 70-210mm f/3.5 exists at a historical fork in the highway, despite the fact that Canon nonetheless sells a 70-200mm f/4, which is quite well-known.

Distortion-sensible, I can't say I seen very a lot. In phrases of sharpness it is incredibly great for a forty-year-previous zoom lens. Get for example the following graphic of London's Citadel, shot at f/8 a number of days before the unexpected failure of the darkish fusion reactor:

It was bizarre. One second every thing was likely alright, the foods arrived on time and the temperature was good and warm, the subsequent minute every little thing was in ruins and some blokes from out of city were telling us that we had to fend for ourselves and also there was no more food. Here's a 100% crop from a file sized down to six megapixels, scanned with an Epson V500:
The Epson V500 is not the very last word in movie scanners, and I was employing Kodak Colorplus two hundred, which is the slag of all films. It has all the grain and sickly colours of genuinely quick movie, but it really is truly slow! However I do not have a difficulty with the lens' sharpness. I did not get about to playing 50 percent-Existence two till final 12 months - the sport came out in 2004 - but I was struck by how effectively it has dated, and how correctly it predicted the training course of subsequent history. In Syria and Egypt and throughout the entire world there are Gordon Freemans and Brings together preventing each and every other to rule the ruins, apart from that whilst Gordon Freeman was clearly good and the Merge were really plainly bad, true lifestyle is significantly less distinct-reduce. Aside from, Freeman is a incredibly ambiguous hero. During the original 50 percent-Life he leaves a path of destruction most of the individuals he satisfies are killed, a couple of them as a outcome of Freeman's actions, and in the long run he is a pawn of amoral forces beyond his understanding. The outcome of his heroism is a enormous pile of corpses and a radioactive gap in the floor.

The same is accurate of 50 %-Daily life 2, in which Gordon Freeman fights to help save humanity from the evil Merge by killing dozens of human beings and then blowing up a significant human populace centre, leaving the Blend Empire alone practically unscathed and the men and women of Earth in a perilous placement. If the occasions of Half-Lifestyle two: Episode Two are anything at all to go by, we would be far better of leaving the rise up to our robotic companions. Dog, our heroes' 8-foot-tall steel companion, is much a lot more effective in battle than Freeman and his allies. An military of related robots would make short work of the Blend, although there would be the problem of working with the robots when the war experienced been won. It would be unlucky if humanity merely swapped Blend domination for slavery beneath robot rule. At minimum they would be our robots, our legacy.

50 percent-Existence two has an unusually melancholic atmosphere for an action-packed computer game. At the outset the alien invaders have currently received their conquest of humanity is introduced as a fait accompli. But while most equivalent game titles would have the hero putting everything appropriate by blowing up a ultimate boss, HL2 is significantly bleaker. A blend of desertification and alien infestation has ruined the ecology, to an extent that the sea degree has dropped by a number of ft and the countryside is riddled with alien wildlife. A generation of human beings has been held from breeding by an artifical sterility field, and by the stop of the recreation the remaining pockets of humanity are really certainly doomed. Gordon Freeman's ultimate goal seems to be to give the human race with a tranquil location to build a monument to its passing.

I should to publish something about the Fifty percent-Lifestyle online games. Valve Software failed to phone their making-of coffee table e-book Raising the Bar for absolutely nothing. The name is a pun - hero Gordon Freeman starts the two 50 percent-Existence online games armed only with a crowbar, which remains remarkably helpful as a implies of bashing open offer crates - but 50 %-Lifestyle really did breathe new lifestyle into the moribund very first-particular person action style, and Half-Lifestyle 2 was a brilliant piece of work. A rare example of a business item devised by men and women who appeared to treatment about what they were performing, with sufficient methods to indulge themselves, but adequate constraints that they didn't create a sprawling mess.

The lens. Its colours really feel a little bit washed-out, viz the graphic at the quite prime of this publish, but Photoshop can function miracles with that. Its most clear deficit is color fringing in large-contrast circumstances, e.g.:

You need to have to vibrate greater so you can seize the opening of the portal that connects this Earth of 3D to one Earth of 4D or 5D

I experienced constantly assumed that purple fringing was a digital point, but certainly not. Macro-wise it has a 1:four replica ratio, which is slightly much better than most present day zoom lenses of equivalent specification, but not as great as the authentic 70-210mm's f/2.2 (which was achieved with a fiddly gearswitch later variations of the lens merely emphasis very carefully (really closely)).

The bokeh is quite nice and marginally swirly:
Keep in mind Whose Line is it In any case? There was a sport exactly where a member of the viewers would write down a phrase on a put up-it observe, and the cast would then operate by means of a sketch, and at a important moment they would pull out the submit-it observe and provide the line. E.g. "Colin, how are you?", "I'm fine", "Effectively, I just wanted to" (pulls out paper) "overheat piping scorching make sure tear plastic gap do not overheat upright pouch piping scorching make certain enjoy! get pleasure from! get pleasure from! piping very hot!"

That was my favourite sport, because the humour was unpredictable. I indicate, the viewers could have created virtually anything supplied that it match onto a post-it observe, and imagine me you can match a good deal on to a put up-it notice. Think about if the recreation was in fact becoming utilised by MI6 to provide mystery messages to agents in the area, and Whose Line existed purely as a automobile for that 1 sport the programme alone was just an MI6 entrance, but it turned out to be so valuable that it was picked up by the CIA. It looks quite suspicious that it ought to return to tv just as the Middle East seems to be sliding into war.

If my hypothesis is correct then Ryan Stiles has blood on his palms. Every single time he arrived at into his pocket someone in Jap Europe or the Center East or Africa died. Every single arms seller or home magnate or unreliable Admiral or unfortunate border guard or Nigerian rebel leader who turned up dead in the boot of a burned-out car died due to the fact Ryan Stiles achieved into his pocket, and he in no way understood. He never realized the electrical power he experienced. But then once more if he had refused to study out the concept who is aware of what fate would have befallen him.

The pawns are advised that if the attain the other side of the board they will turn out to be mighty beyond their wildest dreams but in the genuine globe of specialist chess, the pawns never reach the other aspect of the board.

Africa is modifying rapidly. Roads and railways are getting developed into remote wilderness places to permit economic improvement by means of resource use. Gold, oil, timber, exceptional earth minerals, iron, coal, gasoline and much else has been extracted at an alarming rate more than the last 50 many years. The wildlife trade has surged to new heights on a continent with dwindling animal figures. Mining and normal resource use is booming in the new millennium as quick urbanization degrades rural communities that have custodial legal rights Hair to our last-remaining wilderness locations. Rhino and elephant are getting eradicated by poachers to offer worthwhile marketplaces in the Much East. Lion are currently being persecuted by livestock farmers and predators like wild pet and cheetah are on the brink of extinction. With Africaâs inhabitants approaching one billion and foreign powers scrambling for our organic resources there is merely nowhere to disguise, no risk-free areas for wildlife, no refuge from the âsixth extinctionâ. In the following 15-twenty years we are likely to lose our final wilderness areas to inadequate land management, pollution, poaching, wildlife trade, logging, agriculture, conflict, and the devastation of big-scale mining across the continent. The impacts are distinct and Africa is just about to modify without end. The great beating coronary heart of this historical continent, the birthplace of humankind, is dying.

Work in the Okavango Wildernessâ¦

The Okavango Delta is Africaâs very last-remaining wetland wilderness, a large network of channels, floodplains, lagoons and 1000's upon thousands of islands. Every yr we cross this enigmatic delta in dug-out canoes or âmokorosâ above 18 times to advocate for UNESCO Entire world Heritage Standing and undertake a long-phrase study of the romantic relationship between seventy one wetland bird species and the flood routine in this vast wetland program. Every yr we are in a position to access far more remote locations to witness the character of a correct wilderness area. Our mentors and guides are the last-remaining baYei River Bushman. They have taught us to endure in and off this wilderness. They have tutored us on how to navigate the maze of channels that department out from the primary channels that are way too hazardous for us to use. We interact right with hippos, crocodiles, elephant, lion and buffalo. The baYei have also proven us the value of a tranquil, balanced mind that is spring-loaded for action should the need to have arise. We still arrive with all the paraphernalia of the present day globe, but our mentors, the baYei, even now get there for each and every expedition with only the clothes on their back and a little bag, safe in the understanding that the âMother Okavangoâ will give and take treatment of them. Next 7 days we are departing on our fourth crossing of the Okavango Delta â" 300km over eighteen times. Really thrilling! We stand-up âpoleâ the dug-out canoes all the way and do it unarmed, accepting no assistance and utilizing no contemporary technology past the laptops and satellite telephones we use to share our encounters in genuine-time with men and women close to the globe. Rebuilding a wrecked wilderness for the parrotsâ¦

My property is Hogsback in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, the mountain stronghold of Africaâs most endangered parrot, the Cape parrot. From our base on a little farm we operate daily to stimulate positive alter for the parrots and other threatened forest endemics. In 2011, we introduced the iziKhwenene Undertaking, a neighborhood-based conservation project that aims to establish regional communities as the stewards and custodians of South Africaâs final-remaining Afromontane yellowwood forests. These forests ended up above-exploited for hundreds of several years and are now unable to assistance parrots and most other species. We have now planted the initial 25,000 out of one million indigenous trees in and close to these forests. Restoring these forests is a multi-generational energy that will demand the motivation of regional communities. We have erected in excess of 250 wood nest packing containers to support enhanced breeding accomplishment. Our Cape Parrot Sanctuary is visited by almost 300 (twenty five-thirty% of the worldwide population) Cape parrots each day for five months of the yr. In addition, our study has demonstrated that the main threat to their persistence in the wild is Pssitacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD) and the outbreak given that 2009 is supported by starvation and malnutrition owing to very poor rainfall and the degraded situation of the indigenous forests. A vaccine has now been developed and we have managed to build a profitable rehabilitation protocol for Cape parrots with superior signs and symptoms of PBFD an infection. We are making a difference, but need to have your support to help save South Africaâs nationwide parrot. Go to: http://www.parrots.org/index.php/ourwork/home/cape_parrot

'Boy Meets World' Cast Reunites at AXT Festival: 'We All Just Felt It Click'

By Jill Slattery on June 7, 2013

(Jack Plunkett/AP)

The cast of Boy Meets World reunited for the first time on Friday at the Austin Television Festival in Austin, Texas to reminisce about the fan-favorite comedy.

Ben Savage (Cory), Rider Strong (Shawn), Matthew Lawrence (Jack), Betsy Randle(Mama Matthews), Trina McGee (Angela), Maitland Ward (Rachel), Lily Nicksay (Morgan #1), and BMW creator creator Michael Jacobs delighted a sold out crowd with stories of their favorites moments from the series, which ended its seven year run in 2000. Even Danielle Fishel, who could't make it to the festival in person, taped a special message and Q&A session for fans.

So why does Boy Meets World still resonate with fans so strongly after all these years? "We never talked down to you," Jacobs told the crowd. "We talked about the things that were going to happen next for you and you all appreciated that."

The core relationship on the show was always the friendship between Cory and Shawn, but all of the actors admitted that it took the addition of Topanga to really make things click. "We are just felt it," Strong shared of the episode that first introduced Cory's future wife. "The best TV shows are always a combination of a good concept, really strong writing, and then it comes down to whether the cast can get along… and we all did."

Ben Savage credited the show's success with the fact that the BMW wasn't afraid to explore those truly awkward pre-teen and teenage years. "The writers did a really good job of embracing the awkward years of any teen. And I think that's what a lot of people could identify with when they watched the show," he laughed, admitting that even at 33-years-old he was still in an awkward phase.

As the show grew and expanded, more actors were brought in to fill out Cory, Shawn, and Topanga's group, including Matthew Lawrence, Maitland Ward, and Trina McGee. The transition was wasn't always smooth, Lawrence shared. "The first week I was there… I think out of the 100 notes we were given, I got 89 of them," he laughed. "I felt like I was doing a bad job, but all these guys rallied around me and helped me elevate my game."

McGee felt honored to join the cast midway through the show's run and thought her character added an important dynamic to the show. "There was always this colorless love between me and Shawn. And I thought it was so needed and so wonderful at the time," the actress revealed...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Saying goodbye to the show after seven great years on the air was extremely emotional for the cast, who felt like they were also saying goodbye to more than just a television show. "It's hard for me to even watch that [final] scene… It wasn't just the end of our show, it really meant a lot," Savage shared.

Strong couldn't help taking a little piece of Shawn with him when he left the set for the very last time. "I even kept the leather jacket and took it with me to New York. And then it got stolen out of my car in Brooklyn! I was so pissed," he laughed.

Other fun BMW facts revealed at the ATX panel:
• Rider Strong was the very first actor that producers saw audition for the series. Jacobs immediately knew that he was the right person to play Shawn and almost didn't see the rest of the child actors who had shown up to audition.
• The role of Topanga originally went to another young actress. Danielle Fishel was called in as a replacement at the last minute.
• Maitland Ward never audition for Boy Meets World. She instead audition for another of Jacobs shows, Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane. She didn't get the part on that series, but instead was offered the role of Rachel on Boy Meets World.
• The final scene of the series finale (where the gang says goodbye to Mr. Feeny) was shot in one take. Producers noticed Danielle Fishel's neck tattoo for the very first time during the filming of the final scene.
• The little boy who plays Cory's toddler brother Joshua in the finale was played by Michael Jacobs' real-life son Daniel, who was brought in at the last second after another child actor started running around the set and halted production.
• Most of the cast named the Season 5 horror spoof episode "And Then There Was Shawn" as their favorite episode of all time.
• The young cast thought William Daniels (Feeny) was British! He's not, he just has impeccable diction.
