About a week ago, Fangraphs added Dan Szymborski’s ZiPS projections to its sortable projections page. Which is nice, because it makes it pretty easy to sort through the various projections. Back when the Giants 2012 ZiPS projections were released, I made brief mention of the fact that Eric Surkamp is projected for an ERA+ of 101 in 142 innings. That’s league-average production, and it’s a luxury to get that kind of performance out of the fifth spot in a rotation. Anyway, sorting through these projections once again, Surkamp really stuck out.

Specifically, ZiPS has Surkamp at 116 strikeouts (7.32 K/9), 59 walks (3.72 BB/9), and 11 homers (0.69 HR/9) in 142.2 innings of work. The walk rate’s decent, but nothing special (if anything, it seems a bit uncharacteristically high); the strikeout rate’s average, but I suppose that’s kind of nice to see, considering how Surkamp struggled to get whiffs in the majors last year. Then there’s the home run rate — the one area in which Surkamp stands out as markedly above-average.

Put it together, and he’s at a 3.65 FIP. Think about that: 3.65. Mike Minor is at 3.65. Matt Moore, the consensus top pitching prospect in baseball, is projected to post a 3.64 FIP. Jake Peavy, Alexi Ogando, and Gavin Floyd are at 3.63. James Shields, who finished third in AL Cy Young voting last season, is at 3.66. There are some caveats, though, and they’re important: park and league factors. Surkamp is a National League pitcher with a relatively pitcher-friendly home park, so he has the upper hand here. But it’s still impressive.

Having watched Surkamp’s six major-league starts in 2011, it’s easy to brush off his minor-league performance. He was terrible. He didn’t locate the ball, and when he did, he got hit hard. And these weren’t even against good offenses: one game against the Houston Astros, two against the San Diego Padres, two against the Colorado Rockies (who, at that point, were just running out mediocre lineups). Nobody in the majors who threw 25+ innings faced easier lineups than Surkamp. Whether it was nerves or fatigue, he looked completely overwhelmed. It was a super-small sample size, of course — I mean, we’re talking about 27 innings here. But he didn’t pass the eye test either — he simply didn’t look like a starter ready to face major-league hitting on a weekly basis.

Projections should always be viewed with a healthy dose of skepticism, and in Surkamp’s case, I think that’s especially true. (It’s worth noting that Steamer projection system, one of the better ones out there, has Surkamp at a less sexy 3.94 FIP). It’s harder to project a pitching prospect like Surkamp than it is to project an established major-league pitcher. And there seems to be a consensus among scouts that Surkamp profiles as a fifth — maybe fourth — starter; even the most optimistic scouting reports see his upside as a mid-rotation starter. These projections look like they could actually represent his ceiling.

But at the same time, there’s something to be said for these numbers. It might be easy to forget or ignore, but Surkamp dominated the minor leagues. Across 22 starts in Double-A Richmond last year, his stats were fantastic: 10.43 K/9, 2.78 BB/9, 0.32 HR/9, 2.02 ERA in 142.1 innings. He led the Eastern League in FIP, at 2.37, and around late August, it seemed as though he was completely ready to make the leap to the bigs.

The Giants don’t have a lot of starting pitching depth, especially with Jonathan Sanchez gone. Surkamp is their sixth starter. Injuries happen all the time, and Spring Training has served as a reminder of that fact (see: Vogelsong, Lincecum). Barry Zito – who was an absolute trainwreck last year — is the fifth starter. So I wouldn’t be surprised if Surkamp starts a lot of games for San Francisco this year, and I also wouldn’t be surprised if he handles it well. For whatever reason, there seems to have been little mention of him during Spring Training so far (in fact, if I’m not mistaken, his name hasn’t come up once on Andrew Baggarly’s blog at CSN Bay Area). But he could very well play a crucial role this season. Don’t forget about him.

It’s been a while since I put up a links post, and as such, I have some catching up to do…

Kevin Goldstein released his top 101 prospects list, with only one Giant showing up: Gary Brown at #18. Brown, of course, was also #1 on Goldstein’s top Giants prospects (which, by the way, is free to the public).

Additionally, Brown was the lone Giant on Baseball America’s 2012 top 100, coming in at #38.

Baseball Prospect Nation, meanwhile, ranked the top 150 prospects in baseball, and three Giants made the cut: Brown at #32, Crick at #130, and Joseph at #133. BPN also ran down the top 15 Giants prospects, and published a scouting report on Gary Brown.

Keith Law published his prospect rankings as well, with Brown coming in at #68 overall. The Giants’ farm system was ranked #26 overall.

If you can’t get enough of Gary Brown (which is actually understandable), Bullpen Banter has a nice write-up on him. He’s 55th on their top 100.

A trio of Giants prospects — Adam Duvall, Shawn Sanford, and Stephen Harrold — were profiled by Seedlings to Stars.

Over at MLB Daily Dish, Satchel Price has begun to do positional prospect rankings. Tommy Joseph was ranked 15th among catchers, with Hector Sanchez and Andrew Susac as honorable mentions.

Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com revealed his top 20 San Francisco Giants prospects.

Speaking of prospects, Minor League Ball wrote about how Pablo Sandoval was seen as a prospect.

Over at Baseball Prospectus, Sam Miller details the “worst game of 2011″ – one in which the Giants scored 15 runs(!)

J.P. Breen at Fangraphs ranked teams by WAR added through homegrown players since the 2002 draft. The Giants, at 97.9 WAR, were second in all of MLB.

Ryan Vogelsong‘s slider was one of the worst pitches of 2011, according to Eno Sarris.

Lastly, Ray Ratto of CSN Bay Area wrote an article about the blogger interview session with Brian Sabean.

The Giants signed right-hander Ramon Ortiz to a minor-league contract with an invite to Spring Training. Ortiz will turn 39 in a month. The last time he maintained an ERA+ over 100 in the major leagues was eight years ago. In 1423 career innings, he’s amassed all of 3.1 wins above replacement. The best season of Ramon Ortiz’s career was also the year he led the league in home runs allowed. For pitchers with 1000+ career major-league innings, he’s arguably among the 50 worst of all time. Anyhow, he pitched in Fresno in 2009, and was surprisingly decent (3.05 ERA in 129 innings).

I don’t think he’ll pitch for the Giants this year. If he does, he probably won’t pitch all that much. Probably. This is just another minor-league contract with an invite to Spring Training. Speaking of which, pitchers and catchers report soon!

I. Angel Pagan came to the plate in 93 double play situations in 2011. He grounded into four double plays. Overall, he maintained a 1.3% double play rate, which — surprise, surprise — ranks as the 17th lowest mark among MLB hitters with 500+ plate appearances last year. The average MLB player, given 93 chances to ground into a double play, would have grounded into nine.

II. By EqBRR, Angel Pagan has been worth +13.3 runs on the basepaths over the past couple seasons. Now, he’s obviously a speedy baserunner. He’s stolen 30+ bases in each of the last two seasons, and he’s done so at an 81% success rate. That’s not an outstanding success rate, but it’s good enough such that the value of his steals outweighs the cost of his occasional caught-stealings. But he’s also good at the stuff that isn’t so obvious. He’s good at going from first to third on a single. He’s good at advancing on the basepaths on a groundout. He’s good at tagging up on a flyout. And that adds up. In fact, he was so valuable on the basepaths in 2010 that he ranked second in the majors in EqBRR at +9.3 runs, right behind Michael Bourn.

III. Angel Pagan had the 12th best contact rate in the majors in 2011, among qualified hitters.

IV. In 2011, Angel Pagan had an opponent RPA+ of 93, which was the lowest mark in the majors among players with 500+ plate appearances. This means that opponents were 7% worse than average against the pitchers Pagan had to face; or to put it another way, no hitter in the majors faced tougher pitching than Pagan, on average. As a New York Met, he had to see a lot of Cole Hamels, Roy Halladay, Jair Jurrjens, Tim Hudson, Josh Johnson, et al. That skewed his numbers.

In case you can’t tell at this point, I like Angel Pagan. A lot. Perhaps too much. There are certainly reasons to worry about Pagan. If you’re looking for reasons, here are 20 (courtesy of Baseball Prospectus).

But I’m feeling quite good about him.

I had thought that Christian may have had the inside track to be the team’s 25th man due to the fact that he bats righty, and most of the team’s OFs are either switch hitters or left handed hitters, but this move makes it seem less likely. If he clears waivers he will likely receive an invitation to Spring Training.
