Google+

We've added a Google +1 button onto each page at splendAd.com. Google Plus is Google's latest attempt at social networking (competing with Facebook, Twitter, etc.) The +1 button is just one aspect of the Google+ experience. According to the official Google+ button page, "Click +1 to publicly give something your stamp of approval. Your +1's can help friends, contacts, and others on the web find the best stuff when they search."

Also according to the official Google page, you don't even need Google+ activated to click the button. You just need a public Google profile. If you have one or you have Google+, then please click the +1 button on any page to show your support for splendAd.com.

Keep in mind that each page is a different page that you can +1. So if you like a particular commercial, you can +1 that page. If you like the overall splendAd site, then our home page is a good one to +1.

Entry Categories

splendAd.com started off only including TV commercials and movie trailers, but we've started to include credits for other creative media. So we're now including categories for the different types of work. This includes the standard "commercial", but also categories such as "film", which could include short films.

This affects how some areas of our site is organized. Some pages such as the brand pages, will list out all entries, and group them into their categories. Some will only show entries that are TV commercials, such as the ad/song pages.

Facebook "Like"

At the 2010 Facebook f8 conference, they announced some new features. One of which was their Open Graph protocol. Basically it is meant to map real-world things such as songs and actors to the Facebook world. This seems like a good fit for splendAd, so we've integrated "Like" buttons into our song, artist, album, actor, and director pages.

Let us know what you think.

Copyright Claims

YouTube and other online video sites sometimes feel like the wild west, but they still abide by copyright policies. In the case of commercials, the most frequent enforcers of copyright are usually the company who's advertising, the ad agency, or the record label for music used in the commercial.

One could argue that they should just leave the videos alone, because it's good publicity. While others might point out the legal complexities of having a commercial online.

Either way, it's apparent that some enforce their copyright more frequently than others. Here are some examples of videos from YouTube taken down or that have had the audio turned off. (If you're wondering, WMG is Warner Music Group).

Have a comment? Post in our forums.
