Copyright Claims

YouTube and other online video sites sometimes feel like the wild west, but they still abide by copyright policies. In the case of commercials, the most frequent enforcers of copyright are usually the company who's advertising, the ad agency, or the record label for music used in the commercial.

One could argue that they should just leave the videos alone, because it's good publicity. While others might point out the legal complexities of having a commercial online.

Either way, it's apparent that some enforce their copyright more frequently than others. Here are some examples of videos from YouTube taken down or that have had the audio turned off. (If you're wondering, WMG is Warner Music Group).

Google Custom Search

splendAd.com is now using Google Custom Search for our in-site search engine. What this does is allow us to leverage Google's proven search engine to help the splendAd.com community find information at our site more easily.

You can find the Google Custom Search box at the top of each page. The results page doesn't leave our site and contains only results from our site. There are also "Ads by Google" in their own section of the page.

Javascript is required, so if you're seeing a blank results page you'll need to enable Javascript.

Action Reaction

Sometimes you'll be watching a commercial and think to yourself it seems familiar. Maybe it's because the creatives decided to be cheeky and reference another ad. Here are some examples.

New Feature - Song Enhancements

We've been undergoing some changes lately to make finding song info easier.

Back in February we added the ad/song tables, which are long lists of ads with songs, grouped by year.

Now we've enhanced our company, brand, and product lists to also include song information.
Here are some examples.

Company: General Motors

Brand: Apple

Product: Toyota Sequoia

If you're new to the site, here's a brief explanation of how to get to other companies, brands, or products. You can find them using the Search box at the top of the page. Or if you're already on a specific ad page, there will often be links in the Ad Basics box for brand, company, and product.

You can also get to brand pages by clicking on a letter in the "Browse commercials" section on the side of every page. Each letter lists out all the brands for that letter, but keep in mind that long list doesn't have the song info. If you click on a brand name in the main body of the page (not the section # links), then that'll take you to the brand page.
