Here’s a treasure from Dick Trevor‘s DAT archives — a 1999 Slinky Wizard vs Green Nuns of the Revolution remix of Atmos‘ classic cut of tech-trance, Klein Abor Doctor, which was then live-dub mixed by Hallucinogen. All involved were top of the genre in 1999, so this is truly a special combination of talents.

Looking through my old DAT’s, I found this forgotten gem… This was made in Januray 1999. It’s a remix of Atmos’ classic Klein Aber Doctor done by myself and George Barker, released as Slinky Wizard vs. Green Nuns Remix….BUT this version was done after we had put down our final mix…. Simon popped round for a cuppa and did a live mix on the mixing desk. In the “olden days” before making everything inside a computer people would make their sequenced mix then put everything on a loop and make a live mix on the analogue mixing desk twisting the FX and EQ’s, playing the desk like an instrument……this was a trick learnt from the days of Youth’s Butterfly Studios….. Simon P., Ott and Greg Hunter were masters of this.Then you could edit it down into a few minutes. So this is Simon’s live mix of our remix….its about 19 minutes long and very psychedelic! Enjoy!

On December 17-18, 2011, Digitally Imported’s Psychill channel celebrated another Winter Solstice with an 24+ hour event that included DJ sets by Androcell & Distant System, Kick Bong, Lemonchill, Kanc Cover, AuroraX, Epronivicampel, Yize, Maiia, Matt With an S, Tampered DNA, GadgetG, Hallucinary, ROX, Majah, Johnny Blue, Dragram, DJ Ene-miss, Bloodwing, Shoom, and me, Crispy. It was an epic journey of wintery vibes and a pleasure to participate in.

Modulations is a feature-length documentary produced by George Gund and directed by Iara Lee which captures a moment in history where humans and machines are fusing to create today’s most exciting sounds.

It traces the evolution of electronic music as one of the most profound artistic developments of the 20th century. By cutting back and forth between avant garde composers, Kraftwerk’s innovative synthesizer drones, Giorgio Moroder’s glacial Euro-disco, Afrika Bambaataa’s electro-funk and Prodigy’s current worldwide superstarstardom, Modulations celebrates, replicates and illuminates the nomadic drift of the post-human techno sound.

The film examines the kids who have turned the turntable into a musical instrument, disillusioned disco lovers who created acid house out of primitive synthesizers, Motor City mavericks who saw the drum machine as their escape route out of urban neglect, and a generation of British youth who transformed these blips and bleeps into dance floor anthems of their own alienation.

Modulations provides a sense of history and context in which today’s electronic music can be understood. It entertains the converted and remixes the mindset of electronica’s nay-sayers.

Featuring a stunning collage of interviews, cutting-edge visuals, in-studio footage and live performances, Modulations moves at a pace that matches the energy and innovation of the music.

I can’t help but think back to the heyday of The Orb and Future Sound of London when I listen to this stuff, so if that breed of amorphous, psychedelic ambiance is your thing, you should love what we’ve been cooking up at Monster Planet.

I’m really digging the fusion of ambient, crunky dub, and glitchy IDM in this new album from Liquid Stranger. I was not super into his last one, The Arcane Terrain, but I knew this one was different mere seconds into hearing the first track. Cryogenic Encounters is sure to get a lot of play time from me.

And Awake is the next chapter of their meditative chronicles that began with the 2004 debut album ‘Orchid’ (Interchill/Dakini) and left off with their most recent release ‘Sama’ (Electronic Soundscapes). Imbued with mystical properties, the rich harmonic layers of And Awake create space for the busy mind to unwind and drift away to a subtle realm of inner quietude.

Here’s episode 17 of Psilicon Dreams, my monthly mix series for Digitally Imported Radio. I’m super happy with how this one turned out, and it’s been on heavy rotation since I recorded it earlier in the month. It features some sick bass n’ ooze beats and rock-solid downtempo grooves, with a thick coating of dubbed-out fx by yours truly. This is not your typical psychill mix, but then again, typical is not what I’m going for. There were 3 new compilations that formed the central inspiration for #17: Painting Pictures On Silence V1, Elysium, and Psycho Navigator. If you dig the set, I can’t recommend picking up these comps enough.
