Portland, Oregon, United States (2002 – present)
The Thermals are a rock band from Portland, Oregon, United States, formed in 2002. The group is currently comprised of Hutch Harris (vocals and guitar), Kathy Foster (bass), and Westin Glass (drums). Original guitarist Ben Barnett, of Kind of Like Spitting fame, left shortly after More Parts Per Million was released in 2003, reverting guitar duties back to Hutch. Drummer Lorin Coleman joined the group in 2006, after the original drummer, Jordan Hudson, left the band. Coleman and the band parted ways in 2008.

Hutch and Kathy finished writing for the album, Now We Can See, which was released on April 7, 2009. It was produced by John Congleton.

In November 2008, it was announced that The Thermals had signed to Kill Rock Stars, and that Westin Glass (formerly of Say Hi) had become the new drummer.

Washington DC, United States (1999 – present)
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists are an indie/punk band, with roots in traditional rock. They formed while Leo was living in Washington, DC, but now have members based around the northeast United States. Leo came from Bloomfield, New Jersey.

The band consists of singer-songwriter and guitarist Ted Leo, guitarist James Canty, bassist Marty ‘Violence’ Key, and drummer Chris Wilson. After his previous band, Chisel, broke up in the late 1990s, Ted recorded the Tej Leo(?) Rx Pharmacists album in 1999, followed by the Treble in Trouble EP in 2000.

His next album, 2001’s The Tyranny of Distance, quickly gained him a cult following and critical praise. Dave Lerner and Chris Wilson became permanent members of the band during the tour that year, as did keyboard player Dorien Garry. James Canty (ex-Nation of Ulysses, Make-Up, etc.) also played with the band during this time.

The album Hearts of Oak followed in 2003, which also saw the release of the concert film Dirty Old Town and the Tell Balgeary, Balgury is Dead EP. Garry left the band before the recording of 2004’s Shake the Sheets, which has led them into their current setup as a power trio. The new record featured fewer obscure references and more overt political content than his previous releases did, though his music has always been known for its engagement with politics.

The band tours extensively around North America. Leo is a strict vegan. His brother Chris Leo is also a singer/songwriter and a member of The Lapse.

This is the Splendid Marbles Cartoon Caption Contest – the one that kicks the New Yorker’s ass each and every week. (That’s right, I’m talkin’ to you, New Yorker magazine – has anyone seen my meds?)

• Type a clever caption and place it in the comments section, along with a valid email address, and you could win a signed copy of the cartoon, with your caption and name attached (and you’ll be added to the Splendid Marbles gallery of caption contest winners.)
