An Opinion on the 'Holy Cow'!

The 'Holy Cow' is again making it to the headlines. This time it has come forward by taking away the life of Mohammed Akhlaq. Few weeks ago, a mob of hundred in Dadri village had stormed into the house of Mohammed Akhlaq and lynched a man to death on the rumours of eating beef. And now the debate is raging like a wildfire. Ministers, MPs, and MLAs of ruling party are making controversial comments. Many have defended the act and others have given smart statements which seem neutral but are more inclined towards defense of the act. In fact, this incident has been successful in turning the attention of the countrymen from 'development', promised by the central government, towards 'holy cow'.

There are many organizations, most of them linked with RSS, which are trying to protect cows from slaughtering. They have their own reasons and arguments against cow slaughtering. It is necessary to discuss about this issue as men are being slaughtered as a revenge for slaughtering of cows. People are confused and are taking stands without understanding much about the issue. The arguments put forth in the defense of ban on cow slaughtering and murder of Akhlaq are highly confusing. Let us try to see what is inside these arguments and whether they stand the test of logic, reason, and facts.

Argument No. 1: "Cows are sacred for Hindus"

It is argued that, according to ancient Hindu scriptures like Vedas, cows are considered sacred and divine and hence slaughtering of cows is prohibited. But invasion of Muslim rulers brought beef eating to India. Muslims eat beef because they want to hurt the sentiments of Hindus. So naturally Hindus of Dadri got angry and killed Akhlaq as he had eaten beef.

But people who argue this way cleverly forget the fact that neither beef eating was introduced to India by Muslims nor Vedas hold cow as sacred. There are many references in Rig Veda about the practice of beef eating by Brahmins. Maharshi Yagnavalkya in Shatapatha Brahmana says that he eats beef because it is very soft and delicious. Vasishta Brahmasutra goes a step further and declares that if a Brahmin refuses to eat meat offered to him on the ocassion of 'shradda' or worship, he goes to hell! There are plenty of such evidences which clearly show that ancient people of India were relishing beef two thousand years before the Muslim rulers entered India.

People who claim that Vedas hold cow as sacred have never tried to refute these evidences! They simply ignore and bombard the common people with their blatant lies. They are using social media to spread these lies and are well aware that 99% of the users never check the source or research more about the matter they read.

Argument No. 2: "Cow is like mother to Hindus"

When first argument fails, the protectors of cow turn to this argument. "Should we eat beef because ancients did?" they ask. "The mother who gives birth to a child feeds him milk for less than three years but a cow feeds him with milk for rest of his life. She also gives curd, butter and ghee which we use everyday. She is so much useful to us. Her urine can be used as disinfectant, her dung can be used as fertilizer. Should we kill her just because she is no more profitable? Do we kill our mother because she has become old and no more useful? If someone pose a threat to our mother, do we sit and watch like cowards? No! Akhlaq slaughtered cow and ate her flesh, so Hindus took revenge on him."

Now, we should go to the basics. Are cows voluntarily giving us milk or we are forcefully taking away the milk? First thing, we are taking away the freedom of cow by tying it to some post using rope. Cow is whipped by its owner now and then. Cows are forced to carry heavy loads. Now when cow produces milk for its calf, we forcefully snatching it away! What right do we have to take possession of a cow and drink its milk? Isn't it immoral? Why the protectors of cow still drink its milk? Why don't they fight for the freedom of cows? Do they tie their mothers with rope? Do they whip their mothers? Do they force their mothers to carry weights? If no, how can you let cow, which you consider as your mother, to be treated this way?!

Most of the people who talk about protection of cows have never raised a cow in their life. They don't know the difficulties and cost incurred to raise a cow. They use leather jackets, shoes, belts and purses without ever caring from where it came. This is my firm opinion.

Argument No. 3: "Cows are also living beings like rest of us"

It is argued that cows also have a life. They also feel pain. Hence cow slaughter must be banned.

If we look a little deeper into this, we find that it is just the first two arguments in disguise. Otherwise, why should be that extra emphasis on cow? If they cared about living beings, they should demand ban on slaughtering of all animals. It must be noted that, according to a survey conducted by Anthropological Survey of India in 1993, 88% of the communities living in India were non-vegetarians! That means even majority of the Hindus are non-vegetarians! If the protectors of cow demand ban on animal slaughtering altogether, they would become a minority. Then the slogan of protecting cows would lose its political significance. BJP, the political wing of RSS, has been successful in passing laws against cow slaughtering. That is enough for them because other animals are not as living as cow!

Argument No. 4: "Even constitution is against cow slaughtering"

It is argued that, constitution also prohibits cow slaughtering. There is a law in UP banning it. Despite of knowing it, Akhlaq slaughtered cow and ate beef. So he deserves what was done to him.

This argument sounds like the arguers are lovers of democracy and respect our constitution. But it is quite the contrary. In democracy, we have judicial system to give judgement. Judgement is given by the court according to the law. Whether the law is right or wrong we shall discuss separately. Accused person is given due opportunity to defend himself. Both the parties in a case are allowed to have their say. Evidences must be produced. After all these procedures, if a person is found guilty, punishment is given as per the law. But in Akhlaq's case, none of these democratic norms were followed. The act was carried out in a barbaric fashion, that too over rumours. If a mob of hundred is to decide right and wrong, what is the necessity of police, courts, laws and constitution? So it is beyond doubt that those who defend the killing of Akhlaq are no lovers of democracy.

Then why all these clamours about cow by 'Hindutva' forces? It is because of its political significance. Majority of the Hindus, despite being non-vegetarians, don't eat beef. But majority of the Muslims eat beef. Britishers used this fact to extend their rule by pitting Hindus and Muslims against each other. Now it has been a definite tool in the hands of Hindutva forces to unite Hindus against Muslims for their political gains. And that is why they hide the fact that Vedas endorse beef eating. Even today, many communities in Hindu religion eat beef. But these organizations don't kill them, they don't even talk about them. But when a Muslim eats beef, it becomes a matter of life and death of Hindutva forces.

We must also note that the central government led by BJP is not able to fulfill its tall promises of 'Development'. They are pursuing the same old policies of Congress which have ruined India and have made life miserable for common man. Hence to divert the attention of people from real problems, they are doing politics using cow. Now it is time that we understand the communal politics of these organizations and not fall prey to it.

An opinion on "My Choice"

The “My Choice” video of Deepika Padukone, has created waves of sensation in the media for the past few days. This short video clip of of two and a half minutes proclaims to be standing up for women's empowerment and their rights. Deepika, in this video, asserts her right to choose what she wants in her life. It speaks not just about Deepika but women in general. It starts like this: “My body, my mind, my Choice.” The video is concerned mainly with sexuality and the women's right to choose what she wants to do with her body.

Reaction to this video has not been one-sided. The opinion is divided, with some hailing it as a good move and others claiming it to be a farce. But it has stirred controversy for some of the statements made. Even a male version of this video came to fore, which slaps Deepika's “My Choice” video on face. If we assume that the male version is anti-women, then you are wrong. But before dwelving into any discussion, let us know which are the focal points of controversy.

“My choice, to have sex before marriage, to have sex outside the marriage.”

“My choice, to love temporarily, or to lust forever.”

“My choice to come home when I want. Don't be upset if I come home at 4 am. Don't be fooled if I come home at 6 pm.”

These three statements are interconnected in nature. The first statement here says that a woman has the right to have sex before marriage, or to have an extra-marital affair. Second statement says that she has the right to decide how long she will love or lust someone. And the third statement says that she has the right to come and go out of home at anytime without informing anyone or without giving any reason for it. Well, this much of bullets are enough to start a wordwar.

Freedom – Ideal and real

'My Choice' comes from the concept of freedom. I am an individual and a free person and I have the right over my body and mind. But what is freedom? Is it the ability to do what I want to do or what I 'feel' to do? Does freedom means liberation from obligations and constraints whatsoever? Yes, it is so in the case of ideal freedom. But reality is far from ideal. In real life, freedom comes with certain responsibilities, obligations and constraints. I can't choose whether to breathe or not; to survive I have to. To face the odds presented by nature, men must come together; they can't choose to remain aloof. A couple can choose to have a baby or not. But once they have a baby, they are responsible for its care; they can't choose to abandon the child. No freedom can ever be absolute, it is always relative. Doing what is necessary for the life, and society as a whole, to prosper is the highest degree of freedom one can enjoy. If Deepika's parents had chosen to abandon her when she was still a baby, no one knows where she would have ended up in her life. Similarly when we love someone, it is not right to leave him or her in the middle of nowhere, without any reason, stating that it is our choice. Because the other person is also a human being who live and die with feelings and emotions. If we do so, it is not love but lust.

To sum up: If we want to enjoy freedom, we have responsibilities to fulfill. Make your own choice, but choose responsibly.

Social & political rights are okay, but what about moral & ethical values?

We can't dispute that men and women are equal, there must be no discrimination based on gender. Women are entitled for all the social and political rights enjoyed by men. But here in the video, it means something more than that. It says that women has the right to do whatever men do. That is, if a man cheat, lie, have extra-marital affair, deny to have child, it immediately gives women the right to do the same! What the director has not understood here is, WRONG is WRONG, no matter who does it.

There is another statement in the video which I would like to mention in this context: “Your sins (are) my virtues.” Does that mean one can define his own virtues and sins according to his own beliefs? Are morality and ethics subjective? Does this mean there is no right or wrong but only interpretations? Most likely, this is what it means in this context. If this is the case, the asserted logic leads to disastorous conclusions. That is, whatever a person does, it is just an act and there is nothing right or wrong in it. If one can do something, then he has the right to do it. If a man rape a woman, there is nothing wrong in it because he doesn't consider it to be a sin. He choose to rape and hence he did! Well, this doesn't make this world a livable place.

We shall see this from another angle. Let us assume that they have meant to say in this video that 'I will choose what I think because it is my mind. I will choose to use my body as I wish. And no one shall interfere in what I think and what I do with my mind and body.' But we have a problem here. We live in a material world where effects follow the causes.

At somepoint of time in life, we fall ill. The disease might be life threatening. When we go to hospital, if a doctor say I choose whom I treat and at what time, why, it is the doctor's mind, doctor's body, doctor's choice! A person is having extra-marital affairs with many people, concealing the truth from his or her life partner, it is not unethical because it is his or her choice! Parents will choose to run out of relationship leaving the child in lurch, and that is also absolutely rightful because it is their body, their mind, their choice! Do you feel something is wrong here? Don't you?

Moreover, if you say it is my right to choose what I do with my body and mind, and it is wrong if someone try to impose on me what I don't like, still you have your own concept of morality, the concept of right and wrong. This morality is in perpetual contradiction because you are trying to impose this morality on your family, your friends, and your partner – “This is the morality I follow, and you should honour it and follow the same for yourself!” Isn't it so? If you say it is not about right or wrong but my choice, then whatever one person does in relation to another is also a choice, whether it is rape or a murder! When a person enters into a relation with another person, it is not just a mechanical relationship; It involves emotions. If we care a fig for these emotions and choose to walk out whenever we choose, then that means we are treating the other person as an object. You treat everyone else as objects which you can use and dispose whenever you want, then you are also nothing but an object for another person to use and dispose whenever he or she wants; this is the logic.

What is right and what is wrong?

If you feel that a doctor should attend the patient immediately, if you feel a person should not deceive his or her life partner, if you feel parents should not abandon their child, then you accept that life cannot prosper without moral and ethical values. Our choices must be based on morals and ethics. But how and who will decide rights and wrongs? It is we the people, as a society, who should decide. And morals must be decided based on whether it helps life to prosper, whether it helps society to progress.

Principles, morals and ethics are value systems which the human society has formed to regulate and maintain its cohesion and harmony. If we had none of them, then anyone can do anything he wants. Strong will suppress the weak, intelligence will deceive innocence. Evil will enslave the good. This will destroy the very roots of society. Hence men must be taught to love mankind. One must be taught to live a principled life. One must be taught to be ethical. Without teaching these things, how much ever one may cry for social and political rights, another will be there to trample those rights underfoot.

The video might have been created with good intention, but it certainly sends a wrong message to the society. It is true that women are being enslaved. It is true they have been tied by numerous social customs formed by this patriarchal society. To free themselves, women must organize themselves, not against men, but against oppression and injustice. Because wrong is wrong, no matter who says it or does it.

To end, I remember one of the Aristotle's sayings: “Educating the mind without educating the heart creates civilized barbarians.”

World Population Day - The myth and the reality

July 11 of every year is celebrated as world population day. The population of world has already crossed 7 billion and growing at a phenomenal rate compared to past. UNFPA is campaigning for a long time, by every means possible, to create 'awareness' among the people to contain something termed as “Population Explosion”. The question here is why should we control the growth of population? And immediately comes the answer: To remove unemployment, poverty and hunger from the face of the earth.

According to what we call as 'common sense', the above answer is rational. Everyday more than 20,000 people die out of hunger and malnutrition, with 5,000 from India alone. As per the official statistics, 77% or around 900 million Indians are poor. That is, more than half of the world's poor people live in India!

No wonder, India is second highly populated country, next to China, in the world with 1.27 billion citizens. Despite of their tremendous economic growth, both China and India are facing severe unemployment, poverty and other problems that may remain unsolved for decades to come. So it may seem logical that these problems are direct consequences of their heavy population. After all, it would be impossible to provide food, education and jobs to so many mouths, minds and hands respectively, right?! So the respective governments of every third world and developing countries are campaigning to their full strength to create awareness among the people to support birth control. But still population is growing unabated.

The matter at hand – unemployment, poverty, crimes - may distress all the good-hearted people of the world. And good number of common people believe that population explosion is the root cause for these evils. But just worrying would not solve the problem. It is necessary to critically analyse the problem in question and find whether population explosion is actually causing these problems.

Is population the root cause for unemployment?

If we look at the present scenario of world economy, countries with very less population are also facing the problem of severe unemployment, much higher than highly populated countries! The crisis was, and still is, so harsh that production had almost come to grinding halt. It is imperative to note that higher the population, higher will be the demand for basic needs. That means much work has to be done! So it is possible to provide jobs to everyone. But then why still prevails the unemployment? Because under the present system, demand means the purchasing power of people, not the demand for basic needs of whole people! Production will be carried out if the purchasing power of people is high, else, despite of the demand for basic needs, production will be halted resulting in retrenchment of workers. The very purchasing power of the people is dependent on the availability of a decent job and income for the workers! Hence Population 'explosion' is not the root cause for unemployment.

Is population the root cause for poverty?

If we take the population density, many countries with higher population density are developed, where as many less densely populated countries are still underdeveloped! Hence at first glance itself we can see that population has nothing to do with poverty. Here we must note that poverty is directly linked with unemployment. The population of children (aged 0-16) and old (aged 65 and above) cannot directly participate in the production and they have to be taken care of by youth and middle aged population who directly participate in production. To look after children and old in a family, the youth must have a job providing decent income. Because of unemployment, it is quite impossible for one to look after his family leading to poverty. Availability of natural resources locally in a country also play an important role in carrying out production smoothly, providing jobs to many. But it is quite surprising that countries that are rich in natural resources are very poor!

Is population the root cause for hunger?

It is said that because of high population there is food shortage; everyone couldn't be fed. But if you look at the food production around the world, it is enough to feed three times the entire world. For example, US alone is wasting more than 96 billion pounds of food every year!!! This figure may shock us but it is the truth. Hence population explosion is not the root cause for hunger!

All the above analysis show that population is not the root cause for any of these problems. But UNFPA is trumpeting that controlling population will end all the problems! It is quite difficult to understand why an organisation like UNFPA, which claims to be the flag bearer of world prosperity, cannot understand this!

Why and what books to read?

As the electronic gadgets are occupying our lives more and more, the habit of reading books is taking back seat, if not alarmingly going out of scene. Though e-books are available in plenty, they are not comfortable to read and other 'comfortable' things online distract the user from becoming a reader. One may say they have nothing to lose if they don't read books. But only one who reads knows the beauty of reading and what they would have lost if they hadn't read.

Happy is the man who acquires the habit of reading when he is young. It is not superficial if we say books are hidden treasures yet to be explored. They are the source of pleasure and inspiration. A good book is worth thousand friends. Indeed, books are the most faithful of friends. They never complain, nor they are unwilling to converse. We may go uninterested in them, but books never go uninterested in us. They always wait patiently to talk with you. As long as you are with a good book, you are not alone.

There are books on every kind of subject: history, fiction, sci-fi, science, biography, philosophy, travel, relationships and so on. Thus one cannot complain that his interest is not covered. Books may help you go deeper into your interest or find a new interest. It is not that reading books just fills us with pleasure and amusement. Books penetrate deep into your heart, interact with your feelings and evoke emotions.

Whether one is conscious or not, books shape our character, and our world outlook. Hence it is necessary to be careful while choosing the books to read. History presents before us few examples that novels have played an active and revolutionary role in social change.

As every art, literature also has CONTENT and FORM. Content is what has to be conveyed, and form is how that content is presented. If a book has good content but no good form, it may not interest the reader thus content going unnoticed. On the other hand, a book may have good form but no good content which engages the reader but disturbs his or her feelings. Hence it is necessary for a book to have both content and form good.

Now the question would be: what can be considered as good content? First of all, the content must not be divorced from the society; from its glories, from its problems, from its happiness, from its shortcomings. Then anything that creates compassion and love for humanity, imbibes social responsibility, courage to fight injustice, inspires to seek truth, fills heart and mind with noble thoughts, can be considered as good content.

If today we search for any books with such good content, we may hardly find one or two. Many books that are coming out today are magnificent in form but poor in content, if not harmful. Most of the new novels center round the lavish lifestyle and sexual relationships that, instead of inspiring humanly love, whip up the animal instincts of man. That is to say that these books are 'Sweet Poison'. They harm the society at large and reduce man to a mere animal.

But, not to worry, history has given us plenty of masterpieces. List of books by great authors like Victor Hugo, Charles Dickens, Voltaire, Rousseau, Charlotte Bronte, Leo Tolstoy, Mark Twain, Jack London, Oscar Wilde, Sharat Chandra Chatarjee and so on are enough to immerse our whole life in reading. So pick up a book, that fills your mind with knowledge, noble thoughts and higher ideals, today and you will find a faithful companion for life!

Good movie to watch: Mother of Mine

Eero is a boy of age 7 or 8, who loses his father, a soldier, during world war 2. To keep him safe, away from the war torned life, his mother, Kirsti sends him to Sweden, where more than 70,000 other children of Finland were supposed to be provided with shelter till the end of war. Eero believes when his mother said that this was just a vacation. Eero is recieved by a Swedish couple, Hjalmer and Signe, who have lost their little girl to storm. On finding that it is a boy who has come to them, the Swedish lady feels down-hearted and walks away without greeting Eero as she was expecting a little girl like their own. But Hjalmer welcomes him well to their home. Here begins the story.

Eero finds it easy with Hjalmer who is very kind and joyous with him. But mother Signe turns out to be an alien to the child; She doesn't know Finnish and Eero, Swedish. This is not the only reason why Eero doesn't like Signe. But it is also because her attitude towards him is mechanical and her mind was still not able to accept a stranger as her own child. To Eero, Signe's every act seemed to be in contrast to his mother's. As the days pass, Eero and Hjalmer get along easily. Meanwhile Signe feels that she is left alone in the house. This makes her grow impatient.

One day, hearing on radio that Helsinki was bombed, Eero feels like her mother is in danger and decides to go back to Finland. But to go back, he had only one way in mind; that is through sea. Without informing anyone, Eero goes for a sea voyage! This ends up him drowning in the sea but fortunately two soldiers, on finding him in trouble, come to his rescue. They take him back to Signe and she feels very sorry for this kid. Memory of her own little girl swallowed by the same sea makes her feel more miserable. This makes her heart smooth towards Eero than before.

At such a time, a letter from Kirsti reach Signe. That letter bore the news that Kirsti had fallen in love with a German and she was following him to Germany. But she had felt that it would be unwise to take Eero to Germany with her as it was not the safest place for him. She had also mentioned that it might be the God's will to bring Eero to Signe and pleaded her to take care of him like her own child for the rest of his life. Signe was shocked to read this and her heart melted for Eero. Now she was totally convinced that Eero will no more be a stranger but her own child. Signe talk to Eero about everything happened so far and ask him to be her son. Thus Eero finds his new mother in Signe.

After a month or so, When everything was getting colourful for the whole family of Hjalmer, another letter from Finland strike them with thunderbolt. The letter read that Kirsti wanted Eero back in Finland as peace had set in. She didn't go with the German as she felt shameful at the idea of abandoning her own child. She had felt that she loved her child more and this had made her to rethink of her decision.

Will Eero go back to Finland? Does Signe lose her new found son? Who has the right to be the mother of Eero?

Good Movie to Watch: 'Sound of Music'

Sound Of Music is a musical movie that set in the background of Nazi occupation of Austria during World War 2. The movie revolves around Maria, a pretty lady with great love for music and nature. In her childhood, she was attracted towards life as a nun at church. But love for nature and music becomes the hurdle for her life at church. She will be sent to serve as a Governess for Von Trapp's children for few months by the Reverend Mother.

Von Trapp was once a captain of Austrian Navy and it can be easily guessed that he was in military by his disciplined life and which he also enforce on his seven children. He is a rich man but loss of his wife leaves him in agony. The children, deprived of mother's love and also of father's, always try to draw the attention of their father by playing pranks on Governesses. Totally twelve Governesses, unable to withstand the pranks, had already ran away. And here comes the Maria as thirteenth Governess.

Maria gets the same welcome as other Governesses had got from children. But Maria notices that the reason for their such behavior was the strict discipline enforced on them by the father, and notably the absence of loving mother. She feels very sorry for the children and take up the task of bringing back the rhythm of life into their family. The next day, Von Trapp leaves to city for a month to meet his baroness friend. Maria makes good use of this time and takes children to play outside, teach them music and give them all the motherly love she had to give. Children become very much fond of Maria and a month passes like a lightning in her presence.

Von Trapp returns with the baroness from the city only to find his children playing by the roadside and then in water with Maria. He loses his temper and commands Maria to leave the house. But when he listens his children greeting baroness with a lovely welcome song, he understands the impact of Maria in such a great change in the children. He apologizes Maria and asks her to stay back. As every day roll, Von Trapp's love for Maria grows within him silently. Baroness notices this change in Von Trapp and one fine day she succeed in convincing Maria to leave the house.

Maria returns back to church and prepares to take vow as a nun, though she was doing it against her will. Here at the Von Trapp's house, children miss Maria very much. And also get a shock when their father declares that Baroness is going to be their mother. What happens next? Does Maria take the vow as a nun? Does Von Trapp forget Maria and marry the Baroness? What about the children? Do they feel home with Baroness? You have to watch the movie to know answers to these questions.

Movie has many melodious songs that perfectly blends with the wonderful places where the movie has been shot. Movie also shows how silently the Nazi occupation of Austria took place. The music leaves a deep impression on your heart and at last, it is not surprising if you find yourself humming the music of the movie.

Rifca Stanescu - Youngest grandmother in the world!

She is only 27 but already a grandmother to a four year old boy! Though it is quite surprising, it is true. The tradition of 'marrying young' in the Romanian gypsy communities has made this possible. And, Rifca Stanescu is that young lady, from the village of Investi in Romania, to become the youngest grandmother in the world at the age of just 23!

Rifca Stanescu, born in 1985, ran away and married with Ionel Stanescu, a jewellery seller, when she was just 11. An year later she gave birth to Maria. Maria continued the tradition; married at the age of 11 and gave birth to Ion at 12. It is also a good thing to know that Rifca, Maria and Ion are all perfectly healthy. And for much of the surprise, Ion is already engaged to a ten year old girl. So it is not a fantasy if Maria becomes a grandmother at much younger age than her mother Rifca!

Rifca is a happy grandmother but she says she had other plans for Maria. Rifca insisted Maria to stay in school and complete her education. But when Maria was ready for the marriage, Rifca didn't stop her, as such is their tradition. It is also their tradition that bridegroom has to pay dowry to bride's parents!

The Nose is a satirical short story by Nikolai Gogol, a famous Russian writer. Though totally fictious, story is naratted like an absolute reality. Except for the 'Nose', everything else in the story seems to be real. Blended with sarcasm, the story attacks the ignorance of people, especially learned men. The author insists through the story that writer must write something that is useful to the society, something that uplifts the culture, helps the progress of mankind.

The main character in the story is Kovalev, a Government Officer in general. But the story starts with Ivan Yakovlevitch, a barber who shaved Kovalev twice a week, finds the nose of Kovalev in his daily piece of bread!! Demoralized by the scene, Ivan gets rid of the nose by throwing it into the river. Thus the story begins!

That morning, as usual, Kovalev wakes up from his bed and reach the mirror, only to see the unusual disappearance of his nose! Yes, his nose that rests between the cheeks!! He sees a flat, smooth surface at the place of his nose. Horribly frightened, Kovalev sets out to register a complaint about the great escape of his nose. As he walks through the street, he finds his nose, dressed like a State Councillor, roaming through the streets in a carriage! Astonished Kovalev follow the carriage and meet the 'Nose in disguise' at Church. Kovalev hesitantly asks the 'Nose' to return to its original place. The 'Nose' couldn't make out a thing of Kovalev's words and hence ignores him. While Kovalev's sight falls towards a beautiful lady for a second, 'Nose' takes this chance to escape form the scene!

Kovalev continues his search for his nose and decides to advertise it on Newspaper. But the man at the advertisement section refuses to take his advertisement, for it would reduce the trustworthiness of the Newspaper. Kovalev's all attempts for the day fail and he returns home. But this doesn't end here. Kovalev thinks it must be the dirty work of a witch, hired by Madame Podtochina, wife of a State Officer, whose daughter he refused to marry. Kovalev writes a burning letter to Podtochina to set everything right otherwise to face the consequences, But when he recieves a respectful and calm answer, Kovalev comes back to reality.

Meanwhile, the loss of Kovalev's nose becomes a national sensation. Many rumours were set to air. Our poor Officer regrets whole day for the loss of nose. He couldn't step out of his home anymore. What happens next? Will our 'Major' Kovalev gets his nose back? Could he ever again talk to ladies without his face being covered? You have to read the story to know answer to these questions.

The narration of the story is simply beautiful. Each and every scene are picturised in a realistic manner. The concept of 'Nose' escaping from the face itself is an interesting thing. You will burst into laughter reading the story. And if you touch your nose to confirm its presence and if found missing, author is not responsible!

The importance of being Earnest is a play written by Oscar Wilde. As described by himself, It is a trivial comedy for serious people! Though the name of the play isn't much catchy, play is very much hilarious. Just to say, It is a normal love story (or stories?) with abnormal twists!

The hero of our story is Jack, a romantic and responsible lad of 29, living by country side. He is responsible because he is the guardian of a little pretty girl of 18, Cecily. Cecily is taken care by an admirable Governess, Miss Prism, who lives with the former two. He also has an imaginary (yes, Imaginary!) brother named Earnest. Earnest is born out of Jack's mind who, never lived in country with his brother, lives in the city. To be simple, Earnest is an excuse for Jack to come to city whenever he wants.

The main reason why Jack comes to city is Gwendolen. Gwendolen is the cousin of Jack's friend Algernon and Jack loves her so much. Since Jack is not Jack but Earnest in city, he is known to everyone in the city, including Gwendolen, as Earnest. Gwendolen also loves Jack because his name is Earnest! That might be quite cynical but our heroine feels something musical in the name Earnest. When Jack proposes Gwendolen, he comes to know about this fact. So Jack prepares to kill his imaginary brother and rechristine himself as Earnest!

One fine day, Jack unexpectedly returns to the country when no one was expecting him back home for next few days. He brings with him the sad news of his brother's death to Miss Prism. But Cecily comes running out of home to give a “good” news to Jack. Cecily informs Jack that his brother has just arrived from town!! It is a mere shock for miss Prism but total absurdity for Jack!

Well, Earnest's arrival to the country stirs the situation. To make it more sensational, Earnest proposes Cecily and she wholeheartedly accepts! The twist to the tale here is, Cecily loves Earnest because his name is Earnest! So Earnest of city is now engaged to Gwendolen and Earnest of country is engaged to Cecily. The whole mess gets more messy when Gwendolen comes to country to meet Earnest, I mean Jack. There she meets Cecily and finds out that she is also engaged to Earnest!

Will Gwendolen marry Jack? Will Earnest get Cecily? What happens when Jack comes to know that he is not Jack but Earnest for real?! What happens when Earnest next to Jack turns out to be his real brother?! One more question is prevalent than all else – Who the heaven is that Earnest who suddenly appeared on the scene at country home? If you want to know answers to these questions, you must read the play as I'm not going to reveal anything here!

And the world ends on 21st of December?

For the past two years, thanks to our mainstream media, lot of debates are going on about doomsday. Most of the people are scared about the end of the world. The hysteria has taken the world by storm! What else to say? Recent events around the world have seemed to prove the Apocalypse!

Many believe that recent natural disasters like 'Sandy' storm in US, earthquakes and tsunami in Japan are precursors to the world's end. More than that, several "evidences" have been discovered (or created?) by philosophers, astrologers, and especially media! One of such evidences is "The Mayan Calender".

How true the Mayan Calender's prediction is?

Mayan calender is said to end on 21st of December of 2012, and it is just 10 more days for that day. But in reality, there are many such Mayan calenders! Every calender has different end dates! Then how could we determine which is the actual end date of the earth? Or at least, how could we confidently say that the calender in our focus is the last one of such calenders?! It is not mentioned on the calender like "It is the end!". Just like every year has an end, every Mayan calender also has an end and another new calender begin as a continuity.

It doesn't make sense to believe that Mayans had an extra ordinary ability of foretelling. Only with the advent of modern science the humans started to explore the universe and study its laws. There is no anarchy in the universe, everything has a definite law and they work according to that law. Unless understanding the law, one can't decide the fate of something. Media has repeated it again and again the same crow-sparrow stories under the disguise of 'scientific' analysis.

What to believe?

No scientist has ever said that world will end on December 21. But media has, again, lied to people that scientists have speculated the end on 21st of December. Despite of all the advances in science and technology, it is a morose that people still yield to blind beliefs so easily. Let the common man be aside, even many scientists yield to superstitions. Last month when Russia sent a cosmonaut crew to International Space Station, I was spellbound by watching a priest performing rituals around the rocket launchpad before the launch!

Is there no end to life on earth?

It is not like world will last forever, it has its doomsday for the future. But for the present estimates, that end is far beyond our many future generations. There is no logical basis for the world to end on 21st December. No asteroids are coming in the hunt of the earth. In fact, thousands of asteroids come and go near (yet in astronomical figures) the earth everyday. But they follow a definite path and no asteroid is found to be having its path through the earth. Storms and earthquakes have been occurring since the birth of earth. If they are more monstrous and increased today, it is because of global warming and man-made crimes. For the rest of the speculations, they are too childish to be true. In my opinion, if world ends, it will not because of natural disaster, but because of human beings!

While everyone is hysterical about the end of the world, anyone thinking of changing the world for the good?

Titan Arum - The biggest flower in the world!

This is not just a flower, but a monster flower! Arum Titan, or scientifically termed as "Amorphophallus titanum", is the largest tropical flower in the world!

Blossomed in Swiss botanical garden of Basel, Switzerland, on 19th of November, Titan Arum has attracted the attention of the whole world by its uniqueness.Titan Arum is 2.27 meters tall and it is also the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world. It is a flower, as well as a plant!

Titan Arum has its origin in the rain forests of Sumatra and blooms only once in every few years. It can grow up to 3 meters and rarely blossoms outside its natural environment. But this is the second time, in Switzerland, it blossomed in last 18 months, thanks to the staff of the Swiss botanical garden for their utmost care! It was April 2011 when Titan Arum had blossomed last time.

Titan Arum is also known for its stinky nature. It releases stinkiest odour that resembles the rotting meat. Yet, this flower has succeeded in attracting more than 25,000 visitors to its place. But if you are intolerant to such smell, just enjoy watching it online!

The longest recorded telephone call ever!

How many hours in a day do you talk on your phone, 6 hours or 12 ? There may be some, if any at all, who would stay on phone as long as half a day. But can you imagine a conversation on phone which would last almost two days ?

Yes, Avery Leonard and Eric Roff Brewster have managed to keep their telephone conversation lively for almost two days to record their names in Guinness Book of World Records! The longest recorded phone call ended after 46 hours 12 minutes and 52 seconds between Avery and Eric, at Adams Pool Theater, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA!

Think that they must have spent time talking the same coconut tree tale ? Or with just 'yes' or 'no' ? If so, you are wrong! Even a 10 seconds of continuous silence could have disqualified their attempt!

Some of the rule to consider the attempt for Guinness World Record were:

> If there is silence for more than 10 seconds the attempt is disqualified.
> Single word answers like ‘yes’ or ‘no’ do not count as meaningful contributions.
> No two topics of conversation are to be repeated during the attempt.

Both Avery and Eric abided by these rules and it is said that they discussed about 700 topics. Audience were not aware of what was going on in the beginning but later when they came to know about the attempt, their responses were overwhelming.

Thinking of breaking this record ? Well, I think it is almost impossible but remember, Records are meant to be broken!

Chandra Bahadur Dangi - The Shortest Man in the World!

The country with world's tallest mountain is now also the home for world's shortest man! Chandra Bahadur Dangi, a 72 year old man from Nepal is now the shortest person in the world. Measured 21.5 inches or 54.6 centimeters, Chandra Bahadur Dangi was the world's shortest person living and shortest person ever measured by Guinness World Records as well!

Dangi has lived all his life in a remote village in Nepal and is now dreaming of travelling across the world. He broke the previous record of Junrey Balawing of the Philippines, who is 23.5 inches or 60 centimeters tall. Though he is short, small and aged, Dangi says that he has never undergone any treatment or medication by doctors! When he suffers cold or fever, he has his own way to cure them; drinking hot water with turmeric powder dissolved in it, which according to him, makes fever stay no longer than three days.

Dangi has six brothers, two sisters and his parents were died when he was just 16. The illiteracy caused him to wait so long to claim the award as he was unaware of any such record before! He wants to visit foreign countries and meet people around the world. He is happy that he is now popular all over the world as shortest person ever lived. And he is also the oldest person to be awarded as shortest person in the world.

Despite of being the smallest person in the world, Chandra Bahadur Dangi is a hard worker. He work all day making placemats and head straps for village people to carry load on their backs. He even look after buffalos and cows.

We people make fun of him but only Dangi could know the feeling of being short. Life is much harder for him than we imagine. Most of his time he spend at home and he needs assistance to move around. But he has lived through 72 years and still works to support his family.

John 'Dr. Hot Licks' Taylor - The Fastest Guitarist in the World!

Answer for this question is John Taylor and the speed at which he plays the guitar is 620 beats per minute (bpm) ! John 'Dr. Hot Licks' Taylor is the fastest guitarist alive, certified by Guinness World Records offcials.

John Taylor, a 28 year old music teacher from Westminister, Colorado achieved a blazing speed of 620 bpm while playing "Flight of the Bumblebee" by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsokov, at the Olympian City Shopping mall in Kowloon, Hong Kong, on new year's eve.

At that speed, it is impossible to verify the correctness of the music. Moreover it feels just like listening to a random videogame sound effect than music. But the slow motion video revealed that John was successful in achieving 10.2 beats per second, without a single error ! He broke his own record of playing guitar at 600 bpm.

John Taylor had a dream of becoming the fastest guitarist in the world, shorlty after picking up the guitar at the age of 13. He used to practice 'The flight of the Bumblebee' for an hour everyday, despite of the hand cramps he had to experience. He use specially designed picks with angled tips that help smooth transitions between the strings of his guitar. Finally his years of practice has been rewarded. He is trying to go even faster and thinks that he could reach at least 800 bpm!

The Guinness officials have set 'The flight of the Bumblebee', a century old, famous and complex composition, as a standard for fastest guitarist record to avoid record aspirants going through a single note.

Practice makes man Perfect! There is nothing on this earth a man can't achieve with practice. When will power gets together with practice, one can make wonders! Here is a man from China who stands as a proof to above said words.

Wang Zhonghua is the Guinness World Record holder for maintaining human flag for longest duration. Wang successfully maintained his body to form a human flag for a duration of 1 min 5.71 seconds to win the title. Thousands of people witnessed this immense display of upper body strength on the set of CCTV Guinness World Records Special in Beijing, China on 15 August 2011. Watch Wang Zhonghua showcasing his iron arms in the below video.

The previous record was also in the name of Wang. He had maintained human flag for 56 seconds on the set of Zheng Da Zong Yi - Guinness World Records Special in Beijing, China on 21 December 2010. Wang improved his previous record by adding roughly 10 more seconds to the duration.

Ten seconds may look small but here it has a great weight. Wang Zhonghua is really a man with Iron arms, isn't he ?!

Beware of New Facebook Spam, "Can happen to Anyone" !

From past few days, many of my friends were posting a link on my wall in Facebook. And the comment on the video was like "hey, hahaha can happen to anyone! Carelessness of Celebrities on TV". It looked like a link to a celebrity's 'nip slip' video. One could easily guess it is a spam. But most of the users are curious about such videos and follow the link. what happens next ? Let me explain !

When you follow the link, you will be reach the blog http://14fbvideos.blogspot.com. In fact, hackers are using many blogs and free blogging services to trap the users. So you may reach other blogs like http://fbhotcelebs.blogspot.com, http://celebvideos.blogspot.com etc. But what you see on those blog look exactly like a Facebook webpage !! Most of the users don't notice their address bar and think that they are still on Facebook.

Once the page loads completely, you will see something like this:

You will be asked to install an extension called 'Youtube Premium'. If you install that extension (on Google Chrome) or Addon (on Mozilla Firefox), you are inviting serious problems ! After installing, you are asked to refresh the page. This extension is suspected to collect your Facebook account username and password. Once they get access to your account, first thing they do is to send similar link to all your Friends !!

What else could be a tragedy than this ? IYour friends start to think in a different way about you and more than that, you are indirectly helping hackers to hack your friend's account too !! So, please stay away with such links and always check your address bar before entering your credentials. If you have got any such links from your friends, most likely their account is compromised. Tell them to remove that extension, in case they have installed, and change password. Share this post with your friends so that they too stay safe.

Sultan Kosen - The Tallest man in the World [Living] !

Everything is giant to talk about Sultan Kosen. From his Suit to Shoes, everything stand apart from 'normal'. This is all because of his height ! Yes, this young man from Turkey is the tallest man living on earth, measured 251 cm (8 ft 3 in) on February 8, 2011, and still growing !

Born on December 10, 1982, Sultan Kosen has three Guinness World Records in his name ! Apart from being tallest man in the World, he also holds the record for widest hand span and largest feet on a living person. He is also the one among only few people [10 people according to GWR] to reach the height of 8 ft or more !

Sultan is one of five siblings, with three brothers and one sister. Except him, all the other family members are of normal height. He was unable to complete his schooling, just because of his height ! He was normal till the age of 10, but because of a tumour which caused the release of too much growth harmone from his pitutary glands, he started to grow abnormally.

He works as a part time farmer to support his family. He uses walking sticks and can't stand for a long time. He feels happy about his height, as he could help his mom with household stuff, like changing a broken light bulb and hanging curtains. But it is hard for him to find clothes and shoes that fit him well. He also finds it extremely hard to fit into a normal sized car !

The tallest human being in recorded history is Robert Pershing Wadlow, who lived during 1920s in Alton, Illinois, USA and measured 8 ft 11.1 in, 18 days before his death !! His shoe size was 37AA or 18.5 in and can still be found in Alton Museum of History and Art !

Patience is a precious art everyone should master. Things will never always go in our way. Understanding and adjusting ourselves to the situation will always simplify the matter, right ? Human mentality is really typical. When we do mistakes, we try to compromise. But when someone else does mistake, we command for Justice !

There is no reason why I'm explaining all these. I recently read an old Joke. In fact, rather being just a joke, it tries to teach something out of Life. It is just a 'pick from the attic', so you might have heard this one. Just go on reading.....

'James was cleaning out the attic one day when he came across a ticket from a shoe repair shop. The date stamped on the ticket showed it was over eleven years old ! He felt sure the shoes would not still be there, but decided to stop by and check anyway.

He handed the ticket to the man behind the counter, who scowled at the date. "Just a minute," said the clerk. "I'll have to look for these." He disappeared into a back room. After a few minutes, the clerk called out, "What do you know - here they are!" "That's terrific!" said James, hardly believing his good fortune.

The man came back to the counter, empty-handed. "They'll be ready by Thursday," he said !!'

Just guess the response of James to the shop keeper's words. I really don't what James might have done, but here we need to look at two things; Patience and Understanding.

All living beings tend to forget almost everything in time. Understanding the situation and being patient plays a great role in our lives. We will never get the nose which is cut when we were angry. So, remember to understand ! Being patient makes one strong. But well, there is a limit for everything. Extremes are always dangerous ! Being too good is as dangerous as being too bad.

So, when it is with in a limit, remember, be Patient, be Happy :)

Tokyo Sky Tree - The Tallest Tower in the World !

The Tokyo Sky Tree, located in the Narihirabashi/Oshiage area of Sumida Ward, Tokyo, has been recognized as the tallest tower in the world ! Boasting a height of 634 meters, this tower has been built with Japanese Culture in mind.

Alistair Richards, Managing Director of Guinness World Records, confirmed the record by presenting the certificate to Michiaki Suzuki, President of Tobu Tower Sky Tree. This tower has replaced Canton Tower in Guangzhou, China, as the tallest tower, which stands at a height of 600 meters. Tokyo sky tree will be used for Television & Radio Broadcasting. It has also witnessed the complete transition from Analog to digital broadcasting in Tokyo !

The construction of this tower was started in July 2008, and has been finished this November. Tokyo Sky Tree employs the Japanese cutting edge technology in reproducing the traditional architectural know-how of the 'Shimbashira-Seishin' (center column vibration control) used in the five-story pagoda. This tower holds digital TV antenna at the top and two observatories at the height of 350m and 450m.

The colour design of Tokyo Sky Tree is a blend of Japanese traditional beauty and neo-futuristic design ! The White colour has been used extensively, which the Japanese believe to be a colour that differentiate one from the rest and also to recall a symbolic value. Inspired by the technique of indigo dyeing, the Sky Tree White has a tint of blue in it. The faint bluish white gives a subtle luster to the Tower.

This tower is still not opened for public, but with a grand opening ceremony in spring of 2012, Tokyo Sky Tree will be made available for public.

Nokia has unveiled its first Windows Phone, Nokia Lumia 800 ! Since the debut of Android, Nokia's hold on mobile market has loosened to a large extent. But this time, Nokia is expected to come back with a boom into market.

Nokia Lumia 800 is one among the two Lumia series phones launched. Lumia 800 has a simple but yet, stylish and beautiful looks. It features a 3.7" ClearBlack AMOLED display with WVGA 800x480 resolution. It can display 16 million colours to keep the view real. The curved glass on display is seamlessly integrated with one piece body.

This phone has 512 MB of program memory (RAM) and 16 GB of user memory (storage). 25 GB of free online storage with Skydrive is also available. The 8 MP camera and 28 mm wide angle Carl Zeiss lens with LED flash brings every picture you take into life. It can record videos in HD (720p, 30 fps) with auto focus and touch focus. Lumia 800 runs on Windows Phone 7.5 platform, supported by wide array of applications. Sharing has been made easier as facebook is integrated with phonebook. It supports HTML5, Javascript, CSS3, XHTML, DOM and more, hence an amazing browsing experience !

Lumia 800 is business ready with Microsoft Office available on your phone ! Integrated GPS, A-GPS, Nokia Maps (to be downloaded from marketplace), Bing maps make navigation easier. Preloaded with many popular games and Xbox Live Hub, enjoy a better gaming experience.

Over all, Nokia Lumia 800 is quite identical to Nokia N9 ! From looks to features, Lumia 800 is duplicated from N9. The only feature that distinguishes Lumia from N9 is, it runs on Windows Phone platform while N9 runs on MeeGo. Though its performance capability is less than N9, initial reactions have been good for Nokia Lumia 800.
