Sullivan's Crossing - Let It Go - Review : All Good Things Come To An End

This episode was such a heartbreaking episode to watch, it felt like everyone’s lives (apart from maybe Frank and Edna’s) were not going the way that they wanted.

I really do like having Sedona back on the show, I think she was the perfect person to call Cal out on how invested he was with Ben and Tracy. I have thought since he first tried to protect Ben when he took Tracy that he was too invested in protecting them and projecting his own past onto them, he couldn’t save his own family from what happened so now he was trying to save someone else.

I also thought that it was a good device to have Sedona be the one that cheated and not Chris, it seemed to give Cal a bit more perspective on Maggie and his relationship. She could give her side of what happened with Chris and give him some more reassurance with Maggie.

Watching Ben blame himself for his mother leaving was so tough, the pain in his voice and eyes was so real. He was letting his true emotions about the situation finally come out, the whole time he has been incredibly strong for Tracy’s sake. It was perfect for Cal and Sedona to be the ones that were there for him, they have experienced what it is like to blame themselves for one of their parents leaving.

Even Amir and Sydney were not having things go the way that they both wanted. I do think that once Rob gets out of the way that the pair will be a good couple if they chose to go there. Their chemistry is off the charts and they seem to hold the same core values.

I loved that throughout the episode there was an underlying tone of advice, almost everyone got some level of advice in this episode. Not all of it was necessarily the correct type of advice but it was given nonetheless. I think it made each scene come together in such a great way.

Watching Cal deal with everything this episode was so gut wrenching. He was dealing with everyone with such grace despite what he went through. Even his confrontation with Liam was all done for Maggie’s sake, he just wanted to protect her regardless of how hurt he was. Liam had absolutely no right to twist the knife with every word that he said to Cal. I have never really had any bad feelings towards Liam until this episode, he’s just turned Cal and Maggie’s lives upside down and clearly has no remorse for that.

The last scene of this episode brought me so close to tears, it was so gut wrenching to watch Cal learn more information about Maggie’s situation. I will always root for Maggie and Cal to be together but I think Maggie needs to work out what she wants before she hurts Cal anymore. He has been such a good person throughout all of this and he deserves someone who is fully in love with him.

I honestly think that once Maggie really thinks about what has happened and her future, Cal will be the one that she wants to be with.

I am so interested to see where things will go now that Maggie and Cal have broken up, I think it’s going to feel like a very different dynamic at the crossing!

Anyone who chooses to watch a vintage TV series from the 70s or even the 80s will be struck by one aspect above all others – just how slow and uninvolving it is. That’s because, without even realising it, we’re now used to what might be called hyper-entertainment. The pacing is fast, the stakes are high and the tension can be off the scale.

Another feature is that entertainment has been gradually changing from a passive activity to one that’s very much interactive. What’s more this change has also started to appear in other spheres and media formats in response to audience preferences. This helps explain the growing appeal of formats built on immediacy, unpredictability and participation.

Audiences no longer want simply to observe a story unfold; they want to feel involved in it, to react in real time and to experience the emotional peaks for themselves. In that context, it is hardly surprising that digital entertainment borrowing the language of suspense, competition and instant reward has found an audience. From cliffhanger-led box sets to live-streamed moments of jeopardy, contemporary culture increasingly rewards experiences that are immersive, fast-moving and emotionally charged, blurring the line between watching entertainment and actively stepping inside it.

Genres that are leading the way

One look at the schedules on traditional broadcast media paints a broader picture of the sorts of shows that are particularly big right now. As well as true crime documentaries and psychological thrillers like the Netflix series Ripley there’s an increasing appetite for high stakes competitions and survival reality shows, whether real or staged like the insanely popular Squid Game.

But what all these have in common is a sense of uncertainty about what could be coming next, a cranking up of emotional tension and the momentum to encourage viewers to watch the next episode.

Streamers lead the way

It’s widely recognised that we have the big streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime to thank for these developments. They have done this stealthily, gradually conditioning viewers to expect faster pacing and higher levels of anticipation. Some of this has been down to counteracting the now infamous second screening. The streamers have learnt that if they want viewers’ undivided attention there had better be something worth concentrating on.

Luckily, those viewers are becoming more receptive to interactive formats and increasingly find them rewarding too.

What’s coming next?

As already mentioned, uncertainty about where a story might be headed is a central facet of building this attention-grabbing atmosphere. Some people like to try to speculate what twists and turn may be around the corner, others are happy to sit back and be surprised. But, as psychologists have long-recognised unpredictability is in our nature so seeing it on screen satisfies us on a number of levels. These range from providing emotional high and low points to creating an atmosphere of expectation and reward – and in all cases it results in a definite release of tension.

The online casino effect

By a process of entertainment osmosis, many of these features can also be found in another phenomenon of the modern entertainment environment – the online casino. And perhaps many of them were there already. After all, there’s the in-built tension deriving from the anticipation of whether it will be a winning card or spin of the wheel – a tension that is resolved almost as soon as it’s set up.

So there are exciting times ahead, the like of which many of us have never fully experienced before.

Sullivan's Crossing - Face The Music - Review : The Truth Always Comes Out

I honestly don’t know how to feel after the end of this episode, I truly feel so awful for Cal. I love Maggie but this whole episode just made me want better for Cal. There clearly had to be something in the kiss otherwise she would have told him at the top of the episode even if he didn’t have time because of everything going on with Ben. Especially with those flashbacks for her, I wonder who she will want to pick.

Moving off of the Maggie triangle for the moment it was really nice to see Syd and Amir’s relationship develop. They seem to hold a lot of the same values and they have definitely come a long way since they first met. It was hilarious watching Amir be a city boy and wanting to wash his hands the moment that he got fish on his hands. I am really looking forward to seeing how their relationship flourishes, I highly doubt that Rob’s warnings to stay away will deter her. Frank and Edna going to the weekly circle really reminded me of the first season when we were seeing who Frank and Edna were. Seeing their culture and learning where they come from was great back then and to see them rediscover that life again was so nice to see.

The relationship between Cal and Sedona is so special. The fact that they had such a tough upbringing but they can now rely on each other in times of need. However this visit felt very different, there were some unsaid words in their conversations. I do think that Cal possibly jumped to conclusions that Chris was the one to cheat, at no point did Sedona actually confirm that and she very quickly defended the notion of cheating when Cal said that he couldn’t forgive it.

The performance from Emerson MacNeil (Tracy) in the scene with Maggie was incredible, the raw emotion was beaming through the screen and it honestly made me a little emotional. Tracy just wants her life to go back to how it used to be and have her mother and brother back in it. I think Ben tried to hide a lot of what was going on so that Tracy wouldn’t have to bear the brunt of any of it. I am incredibly interested to see what is going to happen to Ben and Tracy after this trial ends.

Cal this whole episode was such a noble man and it was such a hard watch knowing what he didn’t. The fact that he even went out of his way to apologise to Liam despite being aware that Liam most likely still had feelings for Maggie. He was willing to put everything behind them and be civil with each other. It massively broke my heart when Cal’s voice came from off screen “What Kiss”, it was only two words but it was so heavy with emotion.

There is clearly going to be a very big fallout from this situation and I cannot wait to see what the damage will be, I love Cal and Maggie together but she really does need to figure out how she feels about Liam before she breaks Cal’s heart more than she already has.
