Nick - you thieving @#&^*%'s ! Why are you doing this to your most loyal fans ? First you snare us into buying single dvd's with the episode orders all mixed up. Then you bring out the full season sets (although how season one can be "full" without the pilot episode "Help Wanted" I don't know). Having invested more than $100 in the single dvd's, we keep on buying those. Now you bring out a new single dvd, but with 2 repeat episodes on it ! That's 6 "new" episodes for my $15. With only a few unreleased episodes remaining, how many more repeats are there going to be ? How much more money can Nick wring out of its loyal fanbase ? I don't know .... I love the Sponge dude, but I'm sick of being ripped off. Now that Spongie is nearing the end of his premium marketable life, it seems that Nick are trying to get as much money out of him as possible before the kids finally turn their backs on him. I haven't taken the shrink-wrap off of this dvd yet, so I;m taking it straight back to the store. Sure there are 8 great episodes on here, but come on - there used to be 10 on each dvd and no repeats. I am so disappointed.

Yet another single-disc collection in the endless Spongebob DVD library. At my standpoint, collecting the season sets is much easier (Seasons 1 and 2 are available now, if you're interested), but if you've been collecting these discs prior to the season sets, then it's best to stick with these. Now we have "Home Sweet Pineapple," a collection of 8 episodes. But, surprise surprise, Nick has started to repeat themselves. They've put on the disc "Ripped Pants," which is already in the Sponge Buddies/Nautical Nonsense DVD, and "Band Geeks" which is on the Halloween DVD. Quite odd to put on the DVD two episodes that they've already released. So that's 6 episodes fresh to DVD, and with two more of these scheduled to release in 2005, we may be in for more repetition.
BUT, if you're buying this out of the blue just to watch a little Spongebob, then these are some fine episodes, my friend.

I am not actually reviewing this yet (thus I only rated it 4 stars), because technically I haven't even got it yet, even though I've seen around half the eps on it, but I am here to make a complaint.
Just because you have probably seen 2 of the episodes before on DVD, doesn't mean you shouldn't buy it! What about those who have seen them before on DVD and enjoy it anyway? And what about those newer ones? I really expected better of you people.
Let me just clue you in on the ones I have seen.

Home Sweet Pineapple (I saw this one on the SpongeBob Marathon on Nick during half term).
Poor SpongeBob. A swarm of nemotodes have sucked all the juice out of his pineapple home, leaving only a pebble behind. What's a homeless guy and his snail to do? Whilst he thinks he can move back in with his parents (naturally, this is a big celebration to Squidward), Patrick believes there are other options. Like building a new house. Or becoming his rock mate. But both are easier said than done... I've only seen it once, so I can't make too big a leap when it comes to ratings. But since it has 2 big Squidward scenes, of which I am a huge fan (Squid, I mean), I must rate it... - 9 outta 10.

Band Geeks.
Let's face it, Squidward's kinda always had a dream to be a world famous musician. So he isn't likely to pass up a chance to perform, at the Bubble Bowl, with his arch rival from high school and band class Squilliam Fancyson watching, in a hurry. The problem? He doesn't have a band. So he recruits everyone in Bikini Bottom at short notice. Will the band flop and crush Squidward's one chance of happiness into little tiny bite-size pieces, or will it be a sweet sweet victory? Genius. Pure genius. Addicted from first watch. - 20 outta 10 (I tried to make the rating meter bigger, it was that good!)

Ripped Pants.
SpongeBob's always been a little jealous of Sandy hanging out with Larry sometimes. But when he gets the chance to impress both at the weight lifting section in Goo Lagoon (by lifting 2 marshmallows on a stick), he's humiliated when he accidentally rips his swim pants!! That is, until he finds out they're laughing with him, not at him. So if lifting weights gets a big laugh, then frisbee in face must kill, and surfing must knock them dead. But what about pretending to drown? It's got a song, which is always a good thing. - 9 outta 10.

Culture Shock.
You know Squidward. Stuffy, boring... well, that's how the public see him. But inside he's a squid with dreams at hitting the big time. So when Mr Krabs needs a gimmick to get customers back (the place has been deserted for a while), naturally Squidward gets the idea for a talent show; the chance for him to bring some culture "to this cultureless wasteland we call Bikini Bottom; not to mention the money..." But finding talent and keeping it isn't as easy as it looks, especially as over confident Squidward wants the whole thing to be about himself and his interpretive dancing. Unfortunately, the public don't feel the same way. Can Squid pull something out of the hat (or, um, tentacles), or is it all down to a star struck sponge with square pants and a mop with no underwear at all? I think this episode is the first episode in Series 1 (so really, like, ever) to show Squidward's passion for the arts. But I feel maybe Squidward suffered too much in this ep. Can't they take it easy on him for just 1 ep? - 9 outta 10.

So there you go. If you haven't seen them before, get it. If you have, well, get it anyway, and celebrate the quality of these eps. However, that's more than I can say, for I haven't even seen it. But when I do get it, I will edit my review and clue you in on the rest of the episodes. Until then...
Oh, and Lord Vader "Anakin Skywalker"? First, it's jerk, not berk. If you wanna be a creep, do it properly. And second, when I say you've seen 2 of the episodes before, I meant on DVD. I have made the necessary corrections. So shut your mouth, you mediocre clarinet player.

Whatever happened to Spongebob?..., April 8, 2009 A Kid's Review
...Stephen Hillenburg left, that's what. I know he never would have allowed episodes this condescending, this obnoxious, this unclever [if that even is a word] to ever be made. I was surprised by all the positive reviews, because this is definitely by FAR the worst Spongebob DVD ever made. At least Spongicus (the DVD that came directly after this) is watchable and semi-amusing. Here is a list of the episodes featured here an how I rate them on a scale of 0 to 4 stars.:

*Whatever Happened to Spongebob?: 1/2. This episode, with its painfully ironic title, is boring and unfunny. But perhaps what bothered me the most is how unsympathetic and shallow the characters have become-- it used to be that deep down, Squidward cared about spongebob, but he wouldn't admit it even to himself; now he simply loathes him more than anything else.

*Goo Goo Gas: 0 Stars. This has got to be the most intelligence-insulting Spongebob episode ever. The creators seem to think that the viewers are too stupid to figure out even the simplest of scenarios, so they need to have it explained to them onscreen. One line in particular, "Spongebob is a baby but Krabs is back to normal?" made me want to weep for the future of this once great cartoon.

*The Two Faces of Squidward: 0 Stars. This episode was genuinely painful to watch. I didn't even make it all the way through.

*Spongehenge: +. Not especially funny or entertaining; has a vague blandness to it.

*Banned in Bikini Bottom: +1/2. Plot and humor are uninspired.

*Stanley S. Squarepants: 1/2. A thoroughly obnoxious episode that is almost as painful to watch as "The Two Faces of Squidward".

After Stephen Hillenburg left, there was a period when new Spongbob episodes were just sort of decent/okay. It wasn't until recently that they became indescribably bad.

Spongebob needs to make a turnaround soon before it's too late.

For some reason I couldn't find this anywhere in the stores, so I was very happy to find it at amazon.com when I was searching for other things for xmas presents. My nehphew, who is the biggest spongebob fan, LOVED it!!! He had told me the title, and like I said was dissappointed I couldn't find it, so it was a delight that I really found him the one he wanted so badly. Thanks! He said it's a good one!

Everyone loves Spongebob, he's the greatest sponge in the world. Here's a list of episodes on this new DVD!:

1. Boat Smarts- A short Boating video to compare a driver with boat smarts (Squidward), and a driver without (Spongebob). 8/10

2. Good Old Whatshisname- Mr. Krabs has a contest to see which employee can memorize all the customers names! Squidward wins, but only wins a brochure, not an exotic cruise! 8/10

3. New Digs- Spongebob is one minute late for work one day, so he moves to the Krusty Krab. Squidward is happy, but still gets annoyed at work. Spongebob finally moves out but guess who moves in------ Squidward! 9/10

4. Krabs A La' Mode- It's a cold day in Bikini Bottom, Mr. krabs keeps the thermostat at only 62 degrees! At night, Plankton changes it to -15 and puts a sticker that says 62 on it. The Krusty Krab soon becomes a skating rink, a Krabs is making more money than ever! 10/10

5. Roller Cowards- Patrick and Spongebob go to Glove World to ride the Fiery Fist O' Pain! They are both scared but don't tell each other. In the end, the conquer their fears and go on the ride. 6/10

6. Bucket Sweet Bucket- Plankton tricks Spongebob, Patrick, and Squidward into painting and remodeling the Chum Bucket. They soon take plumbing, wood, and tables from the Krusty Krab and the Chum Bucket looks exactly like the Krusty Krab! 9/10

7. Breath of Fresh Squidward- Squidward sets up an Electric Fence around his house to keep SB and Patrick out. He gets zapped by it and becomes super nice. This soon becomes to much for the Bikini Bottomites! 8/10

Good DVD Disagree with some reviewers, April 28, 2008 A Kid's Review
This is a good DVD. First of all, 20,000 Patties Under the Sea is on the new DVD Pest of the West not Bikini Bottom Adventures. I own this DVD and I think it has two outstanding episodes with a few good ones as well. The two outstanding ones were Krabs A La Mode and Roller Cowards. They were both filled with humor and good storylines (especially Krabs a La Mode) I enjoyed Boat Smarts, a comparison of a good driver (Squidward) and a bad one (Spongebob). They were all pretty good except for Good Ole' Whatshisname. I don't get these half episode episodes. GIVE US REGULAR LENGTH!!!

Spongebob SquarePants - Tales From the Deep

Tales from the Deep includes all nine episodes from the VHS releases Bikini Bottom Bash and Deep Sea Sillies. In the double-episode that begins this compilation of the Nickelodeon animated underwater series, SpongeBob buys a party planning kit. The porous party giver annoys his guests by scheduling their every second, until he accidentally gets locked out and the real party begins. Meanwhile, above sea level in an unfunny live-action segment, Patchy the Pirate hosts a revelry, forcing a marionette band to walk the plank, among other obnoxious gags. Back under the sea in the second episode, SpongeBob takes his hall monitor duties too seriously, directing traffic and disrupting life in Bikini Bottom. Next, following a sand-sledding accident that requires 20 hours of surgery, the boy sponge is so traumatized that he becomes housebound until a gorilla goes ape on Patrick and Sandy. Finally, SpongeBob plans a huge Valentine's Day surprise for Patrick, but a band of chocolate-eating mollusks delays delivery, inciting the seastar to throw a dangerous tantrum.

In an undersea version of "Green Eggs and Ham," the persistent boy sponge discovers Squidward has never tasted a krabby patty and hounds him until an addiction is born. The patties are featured again in the final episode when restaurant owner Krabs insists on trying to sell a spoiled sandwich. Since no one will bite, Krabs does, leading to a near-death experience. In between, the tenacious sponge and his seastar sidekick Patrick lure aging superheroes Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy (guest-voiced by Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway) out of retirement to vanquish a maniac. In the remaining two stories, the "little square dude" has fun with a gum wrapper and later nearly suffocates in the air-filled home of Sandy the squirrel. Best for ages 4-12, but nothing more objectionable than vomit humor for younger siblings. --Kimberly Heinrichs

I want to start off by saying that I've been a fan of Spongebob since the beginning, and no I don't fit into the age bracket of 4-12 years old like Amazon suggests. There is just something about this show that can keep anyone entertained. Even one of my college professors is hooked on this show because of his children! Well, with that in mind I will try to explain what episodes will be on this DVD release. I don't know the official titles because they haven't been released but I will explain the episodes that I am aware of.

The episode where Spongebob discovers that Squidward has never eaten let alone tasted a krabby patty. Spongebob hounds Squidward until he is addicted, and humor ensues from there.

In one episode, Spongebob and his faithful sidekick Patrick Star lure the retired superheros Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy out of the retirement home to fight "eeeeeevviill" characters off. Dirty Bubble makes an appearance in this episode.

In another episode, Spongebob has endless imaginary fun with a gum wrapper until Squidward becomes so annoyed that he gives everything he owns to Spongebob so he can play with the gum wrapper. This leads Squidward to find that it won't work for him, just Spongebob.

In the next episode, Spongebob visits Sandy's air-filled home only to find that he can't breathe once inside. Always remember "pinky up", which is the only advice Patrick has for Spongebob.

In another episode, Mr. Krabs insists on trying to sell a spoiled krabby patty. He insists that it is ok, but no will touch it so Krabs tries it for himself. This leads Mr Krabs to a near death experience, which is quite humorous.

In the next episode, Spongebob purchases a party planning kit. Spongebob annoys his guests by planning every minute of the party. Then he accidentally gets locked outside, but that's when the real party gets started inside.

In another episode, Spongebob is unwillingly appointed the task of hall monitor. Well, he takes his duties too seriously after he leaves school by disturbing life in Bikini Bottom. Needless to say, Mrs. Puff goes to jail again!

Next, Spongebob gets in a sand-sledding accident that requires extensive surgery. He is so upset by this that he refuses to leave his house for fear of getting hurt again. That is until a gorilla attacks Patrick and Sandy. Will it be Spongebob to the resque?

In another episode, Spongebob plans a very big Valentine's Day suprise for Patrick. Sandy is supposed to fly in the giant chocolate heart but chocolate-eating mollusks try to prevent Sandy from making the delivery. Meanwhile, Patrick terrorizes the Valentine's Day carnaval trying to guess what his present is. Nothing like a crazed seastar to make things interesting. Will it be Sandy to the rescue, or Patrick the crazed seastar destroying Bikini Bottom?

Remember, I am not sure of the order of these episodes but these are the ones that will appear on the DVD...I can't wait. I hope everyone is looking forward to this release as much as I am! I also heard that there is another Spongebob DVD set for a March release. If you are a fan or watching for the first time, get this DVD! It has to be the funniest cartoon that is out now and I know you won't be disappointed.

House Party 5/5 The episode is really funny, but the Patchy the Pirate stuff gets really annoying.

Hall Monitor 4/5 Has a few funny jokes.

I Had an Accident 7/5 Wow. This one's really funny.

Valentine's Day 5/5 Pretty funny. Patrick gets really dumb in this one.

Just One Bite 5/5 Squidward tries a Krabby Patty for the first time. Hillarious.

Mermaidman and Barnacleboy 3/5 Ok, not great, but ok.

Tea at the Treedome 3/5 This one's on TV too much, and it's not the greatest.

The Paper 5/5 "Look at me, I'm a guy with a mustache!" Funny. Spongebob entertaines himself with a piece of paper.

Born Again Krabs 5/5 Funny. Mr. Krabs tries to eat a spoiled Krabby Patty to prove it's still good.

1.House Party. This is a funny episode where Spongebob throws a party and has every minute scheduled. Then he gets locked out of his house, gets arrested for not inviting the cops, and then he spends the night in jail wearing a bunny custume.

2.Hall Monitor. Spongebob gets picked to be the hall monitor for the day and takes too long on his speech. So Mrs.Puff lets him wear the outfit for the rest of the day, trying to help people. But he ruins the place and he has Patrick find "The Maniac". Then the police ask Patrick about the maniac. Then Spongebob later finds out that he is the maniac. Later Mrs.Puff accidentally admits that Spongebob is her responsibility.

3.I Had An Accident. Spongebob breaks his butt on Sand Mountain, has a 20-hour surgery to repair his butt, and makes a vow to never go outside again. Sandy and Patrick try to get Spongebob to come outside and get beat up by a gorilla.

4.Valentinte's Day. Spongebob and Sandy get Patrick a big Valentine with a chocolate balloon and it gets stopped by chocolate-eating scallops.

5.Just One Bite. Spongebob tries to teach Squidward to like Krabby Patties. Squidward hides the truth and then admits it. Squidward goes in the Patty Vault and eats so many that they went to his thighs and made him explode.

6.Mermaidman and Barnacleboy. Spongebob and Patrick try to get Marmaidman and Barnacleboy out of retirement.

7.Tea at the Treedome. Spongebob meets Sandy for the first time and he dehydrates in her treedome.

8.The Paper. Spongebob haves fun with a gum wrapper that Squidward throws out and Squidward tries to prove that a gum wrapper is no fun.

9.Born Again Krabs. Mr.Krabs refuses to throw out a moldy Krabby Patty and tries to sell it. No one wants it. So he takes a bit and gets food poisoning. So the Flying Dutchman tries to put him in Davey Jones's locker for being cheap. But Mr.Krabs begs for a 2nd chance to prove he isn't cheap. But things go weird after that.

For over a decade, "SpongeBob SquarePants" has become such a tremendous hit for Nickelodeon and an animated series that many children have grown up with. A popular franchise which includes video games, the character featured on a variety of food products, toys, health-related items and more. Needless to say, "SpongeBob SquarePants", although not a series shown on broadcast television, has managed to become a character that is part of American pop culture and still shows no signs of waning, especially with a new group of young viewers every year.

JUDGMENT CALL:

My home is "SpongeBob SquarePants" mania for my seven-year-old. For the past two years, he has been a big fan of the animated series and has wanted everything that the character is featured on, may it be yogurt to toothpaste, he is a SpongeBob maniac and thus, he was excited when I watched this DVD alongside with him. I can't help but think that if my son is this way, I can imagine how in the last decade, parents had to deal with their children loving this animated series and wanting SpongeBob this and SpongeBob that.

My wife have found the "SpongeBob SquarePants" a hilarious and fun series. Especially when interacting with your kids, especially with the family singing along with the theme song. For the most part, six of the seven episodes have been shown on the various Nickelodeon channels many times but if my son is any indication to how a few young children are with the series, watching it multiple times is not a bad thing for them and they seem to welcome watching the episodes over again.

Overall, if your children or if you are a fan of the series, "SpongeBob's Last Stand" is a fun DVD release. You get the never-before-seen episode of "SpongeBob's Last Stand" and six new-to-DVD episodes plus a few entertaining special features including the "How to Make SpongeBob SquarePants" which left my son in awe.

If you are looking for a good gift for a your child or a friend/family member's child, looking for a good commute video to keep the kids quiet during a drive, "SpongeBob SquarePants: SpongeBob's Last Stand" is definitely a release worth picking up!

Both my 12 yr. old son and I caught ourselves looking at each other at the end of each cartoon with a puzzled and disappointed feeling. Why weren't these episodes funny like past Spongebob DVDs? They didn't seem to have much humorous content and all ended sort of abruptly with none of those chuckles we used to get at the end. I'd be interested in hearing other viewer's opinions after they've viewed the DVD. It seems like the recipe for humor was lost somehow with this DVD. I finally googled "Spongebob Last Stand Reviews" and found that others seemed (in some cases) to comment that this wasn't one of the better DVDs. I hope this isn't a trend as we have every one of the DVDs and this one stands out as something gone wrong

This DVD was very good, and I enjoyed it throughly. But, The title episode, Pest of the West, seemed a bit rushed and not up to normal standards. also, Th Krusty Plate and Pat No Pay are both only half length, and did not create big laughs for me. The special features are very good, with some very short "episodes". If you love Spongebob, buy this right away. If you don't, you are better off with some of the first DVDs, like Nautical Nonsence.

Although, these later episodes aren't as consistently good as the first three seasons, there are definitely some gems here. What has become one of my favorites of all-time is "Whale of a Birthday." I must have watched this one a dozen times already and I still want to watch it again! Most episodes that feature that over-dramatic typical teen-ager Pearl are hilarious anyway, but this one cracks me up every time! That song "It's All About You" is great and Squidward's "I Need 4-Ply When I Cry" is too much! That one episode alone is worth getting this set, but there are other good ones as well. "Chimps Ahoy": Sandy's underwater tree house has been funded by a group of educated chimps. Having yet to develop an invention to justify her funding, Sandy's afraid she'll have to leave Bikini Bottom. SB and Patrick try to save Sandy's job. "Whale of a Birthday": It's Pearl's 16th birthday, and Mr. Krabs better not be cheap this time! "Karate Island": SB wins a trip to a mysterious island to be crowned "king of karate," but Sandy is skeptical. "All That Glitters": SB's beloved spatula breaks while trying to flip a monster krabby patty. While waiting for it to recover in the hospital (uh...yeah) SB sells literally the shirt off his back to buy a state-of-the-art "Le Spatula." He soon regrets betraying his trusty "Spat." "New Leaf": Plankton decides to give up the formula-stealing business and open a knick-knack shop. Mr. Krabs can't believe his nemesis has changed. "Once Bitten": Gary the Snail starts uncharacteristically biting everyone in Bikini Bottom. Patrick exacerbates things by spreading a rumor about Mad Snail Disease turning victims into zombies. I like the part where SB jumps on a bus to escape the zombies only to be dropped off on the other side of the street. Example of dull jokes that seem to show up more than in earlier episodes: SB squeezes through the door of the Krusty Krab and then begs Mr. Krabs to let him in. "Bummer Vacation": Mr. Krabs has to let SB go on vacation so he hires Patrick as an unpaid intern. SB, at first, can't stay away and then he thinks it's a conspiracy. "Wigstruck": SB finds a rock star's hideous, Mozart-on-steroids, wig and thinks it makes people happy but, in fact, they are making fun of him. Silly episode, but good message I guess: SB to Sandy: "I got so much enjoyment out of the wig myself, I assumed everyone else did, too." "Squidtastic Voyage": Sandy wants to try her "Chamber of Shrinkage" to shrink a submarine to retrieve a clarinet reed stuck in Squid's throat. Patrick and SB accidentally start it. As Sandy tells SB: "This is approximately 17 times harder to drive than a boatmobile, which you've never successfully done, heh, heh." "That's No Lady": A misunderstanding has Patrick believing he must leave town, so SB has him wear a disguise--as Patricia. Has its amusing moments. "Hocus Pocus": SB gets a magic kit and is afraid he's turned Squid into an ice cream cone. Does a half-hearted Wizard of Oz take-off. "The Thing": "Can't a hard-working squid get a little TV time alone." Not with you-know-who next door. As Squid tries to get away from his annoying neighbors, he rides his bike into a cement truck and is encased in cement. SB and Patrick mistake him for an endangered species. This is a funny one. I like when Squid is thrown in the zoo truck with the angry clam. "Driven to Tears": SB has failed his driver's test 58 times. He feels even worse when Patrick passes his first try. "Rule of the Dumb": Patrick finds out he's descendant from kings and the royal treatment goes to his head. Fun detail: Patrick has a library book called "How to Read." "Best Frenemies": A new kelp shake restaurant gives Plankton and Mr. Krabs a common enemy. "Born to Be Wild": SB and Patrick prepare to defend Bikini Bottom from an soon-to-be-arriving biker gang. "Squid Wood": After numerous playtime rejections, SB creates a puppet Squidward who is more talented and more popular than the real Squidward (well, that's not saying much). "The Pink Purloiner": SB suspects Patrick has stolen his prized jelly fishing net. "Best Day Ever": All of SB's plans for his great day unravel. This episode is predictable and a little much to take. Since when can Squidward book a clarinet recital, anyway. "The Gift of Gum": This is naaaaasty! Patrick gives SB his collection of used chewing gum for Best Friend's Day and SB is not sure how to get rid of it without hurting Patrick's feelings. Totally gross, man!

If you don't have either season 2 or 3, then buy those instead, since those are the best episodes of Spongebob, and $20 is great for that. It's only like, $8 more than one of those DVDs that comes with 5-6 episodes. While seasons 2/3 were the best, and a hilarious show in general, season 5 is not absolutely terrible. Season 4, now that (minus Krusty Towers, which was a good one like earlier episodes) was absolutely terrible. It's a step up, and most episodes'll have at least a few laughs in em. what's annoying is how they've split it. I know it's so they'll get more money but it is annoying to not have all the season's episodes in 1 box set. It would be fine if they were $10-$15, because you're getting half the episodes (as compared to seasons 1/2/3) at the same price, if not more. Season 5 Pt2 (Nov. 18th release date) will have the better episodes of the season, though.
In recommended buying order: 2, 3, 1, (5Pt2 when it's released) 5 Pt1, 4 Pt1, 4 Pt2

I'm trying to figure out why I am not enjoying SpongeBob seasons like I used to. There are still incredibly funny lines and the characters are still great. The storylines are getting more and more predictable; for example, SpongeBob and Patrick enjoy things most find torturous to the bafflement of others, Patrick's slow mind taking days to form a thought, and SB is seen as destructive even though he has all the best intentions. What I think this particular volume needs is more Squidward. The Squidward-featured episodes are some of my favorites, and this volume has only one ("The Two Faces Of Squidward"). Sure, he's in other episodes making sarcastic quips here and there and has a larger role, as with the others, in "Atlantis Squarepantis," but he is mainly a background character seen in one or two scenes. In the last episode, for example, he takes one look at Stanley, runs in his house, grabs his stuff, hops in a moving van and leaves! Extra doses of Squidward would have helped this volume a lot, especially in place of some of the weak short episodes like "The Krusty Plate." Still, there are many hilarious moments and some good episodes in this volume, it is just not as consistently top-notch as the early seasons were.

Disc 1:
"Atlantis Squarepantis"--SpongeBob and Patrick find the missing half of the amulet to Atlantis, a lost world of wealth, high culture and technological advancement. Mr. Krabs comes along for the riches, Squidward for the art, Sandy for the science, Plankton stows away for the weaponry, and SB and Patrick want to see the oldest living bubble. I like the video game scene--the characters look so funny. Too many songs, although the lyrics to Squidward's are very clever. Another highlight is the clip of Gary having a wild party while SB is away. This is an extra long episode which means segments with that annoying Patchy the Pirate.
"Picture Day"--It's picture day at boating school and SB must look his best but keeps getting into messy accidents. This episode reminds me of "Missing Identity" where SB had to keep redoing things.
"A Flea In Her Dome"--Sandy returns from a Texas science convention with a flea.
"Mermaidman vs. SpongeBob"--Plankton uses mind control to turn the Krusty Krab's #1 superhero spokesmen into destructive, Chum Bucket-promoting zombies. This episode gave me an idea, why doesn't Karen buy a krabby patty for Plankton to discover the recipe? That would be too easy, I guess. Funny episode, though.
"Le Big Switch"--SB is sent to a fancy restaurant and the Krusty Krab gets a snobby, high society cook as part of the chef exchange program.

"The Donut of Shame"--Patrick suffers immense guilt after stealing SB's donut.
"Blackjack"--SB's bully of a cousin, Blackjack, is out of prison and sends SB threatening notes about him and his family. Some of the details SB imagines are pretty gruesome for a kid's show. SB conquers his fears for the sake of his threatened family members and confronts his cousin, but the ending is stupid.
"Blackened Sponge"--SB gets a black eye while opening a tube of toothpaste (hey, it can happen) so he makes up a story about fighting Jack M. Crazyfish. Notice, he blackens his right eye and, when looking in the mirror, his left eye is correctly blackened (nice attention to detail).
"Pest of the West"--After learning about his friend's famous ancestors, SB reads about his great x7 grandfather Sponge Buck. I like Patrick's line: "I don't have to accomplish anything in life, because my uncle already did it for me. Really takes the ol' pressure off." Concludes with the funny, Hee Haw-like song "Idiot Friends."
"The Krusty Plate"--SB goes to extraordinary, over-the-top means to remove a stubborn bit of crud from a plate. This episode is stupid, but very short, fortunately.
"Pat No Pay"--Patrick commits the worse offense at the Krusty Krab--he doesn't pay his bill. Mr. Krabs makes him work it off, but that ends up costing him much more. Another sub par episode, but mercifully short.

Disc 2:
"The Inmates of Summer"--SB and Patrick plan to go to Sun N Fun Island for summer camp, but end up going on a prisoner ship to Inferno Island. I like how the prisoners try to take advantage of SB's makeshift paddle boat used for his play.
"To Save A Squirrel"--SB and Patrick follow Sandy on a survival camp and waste no time burning their food supply and shelter and using all their water to put out the flames. The ending is silly and makes little sense. The cricket with the helmet was cute, though.
"20,000 Patties Under The Sea"--SpongeBob and Patrick dig up a submarine and Mr. Krabs has them use it to sell krabby patties on the road (or, uh, water) and are met with competition (Plankton) and a monster in an abyss.
"The Battle of Bikini Bottom"--SB and Patrick get into a battle over cleanliness (SB) or lack thereof (Patrick). Funny one, I like the beginning when they're wearing the "Best Friends" shirts.
"Whatever Happened to SpongeBob?"--SB manages to make everyone he knows mad at him so he leaves Bikini Bottom and ends up in New Kelp City where the residents have a strange aversion to bubbles. What's up with everyone calling him "idiot boy" all of a sudden?

"Goo Goo Gas"--Plankton creates a gas that turns adults into babies in his never-ending quest to steal the krabby patty formula. The difficulty he has making the gas doesn't make sense because he got it right the first time. His line after watching a woman tell her baby she can take away its formula whenever she wants: "Something about that woman reminds me of my mother," is very funny.
"The Two Faces of Squidward"--SB accidentally slams Squid's face with a door. When the bandages are removed, Squid becomes a chiseled hunk and his resulting popularity becomes too much to handle.
"Spongehenge"--A severe wind storm whistles through SB's pores creating music that attracts jellyfish (reminds me of the episode where the jellyfish have a wild party at SB's house after the jellyfish keeps following SB). SB hides in a cave and finds a solution to his problem. Clever ending.
"Banned in Bikini Bottom"--A tour bus of old biddies arrive at the Krusty Krab and decide to ban krabby patties because they caused SB to sing and dance. In the spirit of Prohibition, Mr. Krabs sells patties underground (well, not literally).
"Stanley S. Squarepants"--SB's klutzy cousin comes to live with him (how many cousins does SB have?) and SB gets him a job at the Krusty Krab. Stanley, of course, does nothing right and SB keeps being blamed. Mr. Krabs finally finds the perfect job for Stanley--the Chum Bucket. Very annoying character, I hope he is a one-timer.

I believe as with most things, it is just plain hard to continue to please audiences. The earlier Spongebobs were hysterical because they were something different and outrageous. Season 5 is very funny, but it just lacks the wackiness of the earlier seasons. This could be contributed to my age difference after 5 seasons of watching Spongebob, and I am sure kids will enjoy it regardless. The quality of the animation is still top notch, the packaging is fantastic and everything is still quality stuff.

Season 5 Volume 2 contains "21 tales of deep sea silliness" plus 5 Karaoke music videos as a bonus.

The first three seasons of Spongebob were great. It was an absurd masterpeice of the highest order that made Ren and Stimpy look like "Washington Week in Review" in comparison. It had comedy that kids could relate to as well as something for us adults, mainly in the characters that resemble people we see in real life every day: the eternal optimist (Spongebob), the psychotic best friend (Patrick), the "foreigner" just trying to adapt to new surroundings (Sandy), the "accomplished neophyte" that lacks any real skill (Squidward), and the cheapskate (Mr. Krabs).

Unfortunately, in its fourth season, Spongebob jumps the shark, probably due to the departure of creator and marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg. The cartoon inhabitants of Bikini Bottom have become just exaggerated caricatures of their past incarnations - they are cartoons of cartoons. The clever dialogue and straightforward storylines of past seasons have been replaced with slap-stick physical comedy and overly complex storylines that are boring for children and too inane for adults.

So why, you might ask, am I giving it three stars? Because it still has its moments. In particular, I really loved "Patrick Smartpants" which was nothing short of a series classic. Patrick and Sponge Bob are jellyfishing when Patrick runs off a cliff and loses his head, which Sponge Bob (accidentally) replaces with brain coral. Patrick then becomes a genius, discussing classical music with Squidward and complex physics and calculus with Sandy. I also liked the half hour episode, "Have You Seen This Snail? (Where's Gary?)" in which SpongeBob tries to beat a paddle-ball world record and forgets to feed Gary -- for 10 days. Gary runs away to downtown Bikini Bottom where he is taken in by a kindly old woman who indulges him in every way possible. This is fine with Gary until he finds out why he is being fattened up, and promptly returns home to a lonely and penitent SpongeBob.

There were other good episodes, but the bad episodes are pretty awful. For example, I found myself just plain bored with "Dunces and Dragons", in which Spongebob and Patrick get transported to medieval times, and the season openers "Fear of A Krabby Patty" and "Shell of a Man" were so bad they were just plain embarrassing to watch. Also, although this show has always had some mild adult humor built into it, mainly in the form of witty dialogue, the episode "SquidBob TentaclePants" is way too scary for small children. It is very much like the 80's version of "The Fly" - where SpongeBob and Squidward get spliced together in Sandy's transporter machine. The results of these animated Frankenstein-like mixtures might be funny to adults, but I can see it inducing nightmares in small children. Graphic horror is just not what you expect when you tune in to SpongeBob.

All in all, I think these first twenty episodes of season four form a "take it or leave it" kind of season, which is just not how I would have ever expected to describe any season of SpongeBob.

Before the fourth season came on the air, rumors were floating around that creator Stephen Hillenburg left the show after making the Spongebob movie, yet if you look in the credits of the season 4 episodes, you see that he still remains in his Executive Producer post. Regardless, whether he left his post or not, SpongeBob still remains as the best cartoon on TV so far. Granted, there has been a noticeable decline coming from the first few episodes in this set, but then things started to get better and funnier as the show went on; It seemed the season took a while to find its legs.

As you can see, the SpongeBob has always been trying something new: We get an entire episode focused on Spongebob's silly laugh (see Funny Pants), and a sixth Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy episode, which although it's not as good as the other MM&BB episodes, I still find it quite funny, because it plays a joke on the stupidity of Hollywood making mediocre movies based on things we know and love; there's also not one, but two episodes that are truly 30 minutes long-Have You Seen This Snail and Dunces and Dragons-and not marred half the half-hour episode by the annoying Patchy the Pirate; Mr. Krabs does something to his restaurant, the Krusty Krab, by selling it to sludge-making food company in Selling Out, and turning the restaurant into a hotel in one of the funniest episodes ever, Krusty Towers; And we finally get to see what happens when Patrick becomes as smart as a scientist in Patrick Smartpants, and what happens when SpongeBob and Squidward "stick together" in an experimental accident in SquidBob TentaclePants, claimed by SpongeBob's voice Tom Kenny as his favorite episode. There's still plenty more content to check out in this set.

In addition, the set also includes a behind-the-scenes featurette on the voices behind the SpongeBob cast, and two animatics of the episodes Fear of a Krabby Patty and Dunces and Dragons. Although all this seems really good, I am quite confused; this set contains half the season when already the previous three DVD sets came out with three full seasons. Paramount should've waited for the show to complete its full season and realeased that full season on DVD then. But either way, I hope the set comes at a reasonable price, just like the other sets.

I agree with some of the other reviewers that this season, although containing a few excellent episodes, is weaker than the previous three. The cool wittiness that appeals to adults, like myself, is just not there. Some of the story lines seem stale or, if they have possibilities, don't really go anywhere. There are a handful of episodes from the previous seasons I do not like but, on this DVD, there are only a handful I consider stellar ("Have You Seen This Snail?," "Enemy-In-Law," "Patrick Smartpants"), the rest either OK, mediocre, or far below average. Fortunately, most of the better ones are towards the end so that may bode well for the second volume from season 4. As much as I like SpongeBob, I cannot give this season five stars. Here's what you get:

Disc 1:
"Fear of a Krabby Patty": To compete with the Chum Bucket, Mr. Krabs changes the Krusty Krab hours to 24 hours a day. By day 43, SpongeBob starts to hallucinate about giant krabby patties. Enter psychiatrist Dr. Peter Lankton (guess who he is). Pretty good idea but I found the ending to be rather stale.
"Shell of a Man": Mr. Krabs plans to go to his Navy reunion and reunite with his shipmates who remember him as "Iron-abs Krabs," but Krabs has molted out of his shell. To save his boss from humiliation, SpongeBob poses in his molted shell.
"The Lost Mattress": Finally, some other characters get involved! An old, lumpy mattress causes Mr. Krabs back pain. SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward buy him a new mattress and dispose of the old one. One problem: all of Krabs's money was in the old one! Again, a good idea, but the humor was surprisingly bland. Includes some not-too-subtle social commentary on the medical industry.
"Krabs vs. Plankton": Plankton slips on the Krusty Krab floor and decides to sue for negligence. What he wants, of course, is the krabby patty secret formula.

"Have You Seen This Snail?": Two-parter which, thankfully, does not include the Patchy the Pirate fillers that were part of the original broadcast. A paddleball contest distracts SpongeBob from feeding Gary the snail, so Gary runs away and finds an owner who goes to the opposite extreme. This episode is wittier than the others so far. Gary tying the bib around his neck for dinner is so cute! Patrick's side remarks are also a plus. This one is more like earlier SpongeBob episodes. Other clever details: Granny's "killer stereo system" and the clap on/clap off lights.
"Skill Crane": Mr. Krabs gets a machine that has a crane that picks up toys. Of course, SpongeBob wins on every quarter but Squidward, who can never win, becomes addicted.
"Good Neighbors": Squidward's relaxing Sunday turns out to be anything but thanks to a certain couple of neighbors.
"Selling Out": In song, Mr. Krabs admits he would trade his own daughter for riches. It stands to reason, then, that he'd sell the Krusty Krab to a ruthless takeover chain Krabby O'Mondays. When Krabs sees what's been done to his restaurant, he change his mind, but is it too late?
"Funny Pants": To stop SpongeBob's incessant laughter, Squidward warns him he is in danger of burning out his laugh box (SpongeBob's response: "Is that what happened to you, Squidward?").

Disc 2:
"Dunces and Dragons": Another two-parter. It's not as good as the first one; in fact, I think it is overdone. SpongeBob and company take on the roles of Medieval characters.
"Mermaidman and Barnacleboy VI: The motion Picture": To protest a MM & BB movie that uses actors in place of their heroes, SpongeBob gathers his friends to film their own version starring the real MM & BB. The Sandy "Did somebody say `boom'?" gag is really run into the ground. It ended very abruptly. We see unhappy faces in the audience (of so-called MM & BB super fans) but no reaction that would be expected. Very stale and more silly than funny.
"Enemy-In-Law": Fed up with his computer wife, Plankton falls in love with a lady crab who happens to be Mr. Krabs's mother. This is an excellent episode. Very funny and witty. I like the line: "Roses are red, violets are blue, world domination has nothing on you."
"Patrick Smartpants": This is a very clever episode. Patrick jumps off a cliff and knocks the tip of his head off. Once SpongeBob finds and replaces it, Patrick becomes a genius. More intellectually mature than his absorbent and yellow and porous friend, Patrick no longer wishes to see him. He soon finds out that friendship is more important than his new found super-intelligence. Who knows, if he had stayed on his intellectual path, Patrick might have found the cure to some underwater disease. Alas, Bikini Bottom will never know.

"SquidBob Tentacle Pants": It's the day before Squidward's clarinet recital (now, how did he manage to swing such a gig?) but Sandy's transforming machine metamorphosizes Squidward and SongeBob together. At times, this episode is a little creepy. I like when Sqiidward comes out in the gothic robe and an audience member admits she's scared. As another reviewer pointed out, this does remind one of the Treehouse of Horror episode where Bart morphs with a fly.
"Krusty Towers": By the title, I thought this would be a Fawlty Towers take-off. Alas, it does not go in that direction. Mr. Krabs converts the Krusty Krab into a hotel where any "ridiculous request" is granted (and, of course, charged). Squidward quits so he can become a customer and takes their slogan to the extreme. We get to see Squidward's mom! Squidward requests cookies like his mother makes them, so Krabs and SpongeBob kidnap Squidward's mother. When Squidward concedes that the cookies are just like his mother makes them, he adds, "too bad she wasn't a better cook."
"Mrs. Puff, You're Fired": Is SpongeBob un-teachable or is Mrs. Puff to blame for his endless boating test failings? Watch this episodes to find out. You may be surprised (or not).
"Ghost Host": The Flying Dutchman's ship broke down near SpongeBob's house (some witty scenes in this one, especially when the FD falls through the basketball hoop) so he decides to stay in SpongeBob's pineapple to haunt him. When SpongeBob grows board with his guest's pranks, the FD thinks he is "a ghost of his former self." SpongeBob thinks he should try scaring the one who doesn't believe in ghosts: Squidward.
"Wishing You Well": Mr. Krabs starts a new sideline by having his own wishing well built. Too much singing in this one.

Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants has become so popular, it must be considered a phenomenon. The series has a pleasant, predictable, and slightly offbeat humor, and these mini-adventures give viewers what they expect. SpongeBob has to deal with a ghostly pirate, his own insecurities when his skill as a preparer of krabby patties is challenged, and the dangerous pleasures of fisherman's hooks. The voice acting is often amateurish and imitative. Patrick suggests a Homer Simpson-wannabe, while Bubble Bass sounds like the Comic Book Guy. The humor can become gross. In episode No. 2, SpongeBob absorbs a bathtub full of water, then vomits it at Gary, the snail who acts as his dog. But it seems pointless to grumble about these weaknesses. Life of crime

Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob and Patrick that it's okay to borrow things if you return them. So the two "borrow" a balloon from the balloon man [On Free Balloon Day]. When it pops, they think ther'e crimnals.

Pickles

Bubble Bass lies and tells SpongeBob that there were no pickles on his Krabby Patty. Wracked with self-doubt, SpongeBob forgets how to make Krabby Patties.

No free rides

SpongeBob fails his driving test - again. But Mrs. Puff gives SpongeBob his license so he'll never come back.

Sailor mouth

SpongeBob reads a "bad" word on a dumpster. Not knowing what it means, he suprises everybody at the Krusty Krab by saying it!

SpongeBob goes to a fighting place called the Salty Spatoon. But the door man banishes SpongeBob to Weenie Hut Juinor's cuz he's weak. But SpongeBob will get in somehow...

This is the best one out of the 3 Spongebob DVD's. Here are the episodes on this DVD:

-Hooky: When fishing hooks are found in Bikini Bottom, Spongebob and Patrick like to ride them, but Mr. Krabs warns Spongebob and Patrick that they are dangerous, and can bring them to the land above!

-No Free Rides: When Spongebob yet again fails his boating test, Mrs. Puff gives Spongebob extra credit to get his license, so he can get out of her boating school.

-Sailor Mouth: When Spongebob finds a "bad word" on a dumpster, Patrick says it is a sentence enhancer. They use it often, shocking Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and Krusty Krab customers!

-Life of Crime: Mr. Krabs is found stealing many items from his friends, and Spongebob and Patrick learn that "borrowing" an item is okay as long as it is given back before it's missed. Patrick wants to buy a balloon, but he can't afford it. They decide to borrow the balloon, and they pop it. They can't return it now, so they run away from Bikini Bottom thinking they're criminals.

No Weenies Allowed: When Spongebob tries to get into the Salty Spitoon, the toughest club in Bikini Bottom, he is denied access because he is considered a weenie. Spongebob will do anything to get in this club, even beat up Patrick!

-Pickles: When Bubble Bass comes to the Krusty Krab, he claims that Spongebob forgot to put in pickles in his Krabby Patty. That makes him forget how to make Krabby Patties, and how to just about anything. Mr. Krabs will go to lengths to get his money maker back to the grill!

-Jellyfish Jam: When Spongebob befriends a rare jellyfish, Spongebob brings it home. The jellyfish becomes addicted to loud, rave music, and calls his jelly friends to take over Spongebob's house to party.

-The Algae's Always Greener: When Plankton is fed up with his failed attempts to take[] a Krabby Patty, he builds a machine to switch lives with people. He switches lives with Mr. Krabs to see what is like to be him.

-Gary Takes a Bath: Spongebob has to do whatever possible to get Gary to take a bath. (Unseen episode, but was aired with Shanghaied on Nicktoons TV!)

-Shanghaied: The ultra-rare, only seen on TV twice! Squidward, Patrick and Spongebob stumble upon the sunken ship of the Flying Dutchman. They are all given 3 wishes when the return an object of his. The DVD will feature all three endings!

Overall Great DVD. I'm going To Rate The Episodes.

Christmas Who? 5/5: The Only Patchy Episode I give over 3/5. the cartoon was really good, and unlike in other Patchy Specials, they didn't overkill Patchy.

Procrastination 4/5: Very Funny, but it needed more Patrick.

The Snowball effect 5/5: I funny episode about the good old snowball wars.

Survival Of The Idiots 5/5: Very Funny

As Seen On TV 5/5: Funny and likeable with a very original plot.

Pizza Delivery 5/5: Probably Spongebobs most quoted episode along with Bubblestand (The Krusty Krab Pizza)

Squeaky Boots 5/5: Alot of people don't like this episode. I think it's very funny.

The second Holiday to be represented in the collection of "themed" Spongebob DVDs, "Christmas", includes another 10 episodes (one is double the length) of pure aquatic fun! You may ask why I gave it three stars then? Only because there is a better way to obtain Spongebob on DVD and in his entirety - Season Sets! As a stand alone DVD, you can't say much bad about any of the compilation discs of Spongebob, but the fact that the complete season sets are being released makes them less special than they used to be, unecessary really. "Christmas", like the previous "Halloween" collection includes only one episode actually set on the holiday, in this case the double length "Christmas Who?" where Santa decides not to show on Christmas in Bikini Bottom. The only other two even closely related are "Snowball Effect" and "Survival of the Idiots" because of snow basically. It doesn't really matter because all the episodes are great. Watch as Spongebob sells candy bars with Patrick, gets lost with Squidward, and annoys everyone (more than usual!) with a pair of very squeaky boots! Like I said the content is first rate and the casual fan won't be disappointed, but if you're feeling extra wiggly and I know you are, go get the Season sets! That way you get all the Spongebob you can handle!

Spongebob Squarepants Christmas lives up to the lofty standards that this show has set for itself. Patchy the pirate introduces the first double length short "Christmas Who?" which is hilarious. The basic premise is that Spongebob and the rest of Bikini Bottom is unaware of the holiday until Sandy clues Spongebob in. Spongebob then spreads holiday joy by encouraging everyone to write a letter to Santa and wait for his impending arrival. Squidward, as always, is skeptical but winds up saving the day in the end. Overall, this is one of Squidward's funniest shorts, he has some classic one-liners such as "Oh, I see a perfect photo-op" or "Yep, I'm insane". You just cannot find a consistently funnier show than this and Spongebob Christmas lives up to the hype. Highly Recommended.

This DVD includes everything on the two VHS tapes (Nautical Nonsense & Sponge Buddies) available now so DVD is definitely the way to go. The episodes are as follows and in this order: "Ripped Pants", "SB-129", "Texas", "The Graveyard Shift", "Something Smells", "Jellyfishing", "Dying for Pie", "Wormy", "F.U.N.", and "Club Spongebob". SpongeBob is good for all ages. He's entertaining for the kiddies, and there is a lot going on that you have to be an adult to understand. SpongeBob is just the latest of many great cartoons. But unlike South Park (which you should never show your kids), and Ren & Stimpy (another cartoon I loved, but I really don't think it was fit for children), this is a cartoon the children can enjoy (like The Simpsons, but easier for them to understand). And this dvd contains over two hours of SpongeBob and his friends. There are 10 episodes, including some of SpongeBob's best: 'Ripped Pants,' 'Something Smells,' 'Jellyfishing,' 'Wormy,' and 'F.U.N.' (with Plakton). And also on this dvd is 'Texas,' which is not only the funniest SpongeBob episode, but one of the funniest things I've seen. And you can watch this with the Backstage Pants featurette, where you can branch out and watch some behind-the-scenes footage while viewing the episodes. There is also the Violent Femmes singing Sponge Bob and all kinds of extra behind-the-scene footage. 2 hours of SpngeBob and Patrick. How can you pass this up? I am a huge fan of SpongeBob, ever since it came on TV in May of 1999. Sadly, this set only contains half of the season. Why won't they listen to us fans and release the complete season?! SpongeBob SquarePants may be one of the hardest shows to quantify critically. The entire purpose of the show is to defy description beyond the simplest tagline of "A pants-wearing sponge has loads of adventures undersea with his friends". That's it. That's the show. Anything else and you're diving into episodic particulars. It can't claim any sense of continuity or really, any sense at all. Can you believe it then, that this show about nothing at all (like Seinfeld...but for the ADHD-afflicted among us) has made it into and through its sixth season? Typical of children's programming, the season has split between two volumes and this release marks the first half.

The unfortunate part of this release is there's a good chance, being the doting parent that you are, that you've already purchased part of it as one of the many 4-episode samplers they released prior to this semi-seasonal set. Double-dipping isn't a new concept for the DVD buying masses, but doing so without warning falls on the head of the studio as much as it does the consumer. Nowhere on the box will you find warnings or suggestions that maybe you've already bought portions of this set as previous releases. Instead, the parent has little more than a list of episodes on the back to use as a guide in their quest to appease their clamoring child's desires for more yellow, porous entertainment. Perhaps the more attentive parent [read: the one who's had to endure the episodes playing over and over again in the background] will recognize them by their titles, whereas the rest will most likely find themselves with a few duplicates.

To help alleviate that issue, if you've bought any of the following SpongeBob SquarePants DVD releases, be warned you've already purchased some of the episodes in this 24 episode set:

SpongeBob Squarepants vs. The Big One (all episodes overlap)

Spongicus (all episodes overlap)

Now, unto themselves, the discs aren't really a bad deal (thought there's already some overlap among them). The average buyer deserves to have a little bit of foreknowledge before they go out and buy a set only to have the kids coming back to them moments later saying "we've already seen these." It's a parent's worst nightmare: 320 minutes of purchased entertainment that the kids have already seen. Granted, most kids who find SpongeBob entertaining will watch the same episodes over and over and over - but you should still know what you're getting.

Will your kids eat this up? You know they will. If you were wise enough to cut back and not buy your kids all the mid-season DVD releases then you'll find a nice cost-effective alternative in this volume 1 set. If you did already buy one or two of the sampler DVDs, then maybe you should consider just purchasing the remaining single-DVD release which is probably sitting in a bargain bin somewhere for about $7. Otherwise you're going to be that unfortunate parent who finds their kids tired and done with the brand new set you just bought them faster than you expected.

Relentlessly optimistic, drunk and defeated, man-child, sponge-man -- this movie has it all. Most of the parents in the audience didn't get it. But I've been an outspoken SpongeBob fan for years. Hell, I'll bet I like the television show even more than my children do -- and they like it a lot.

It's hard to describe this film, at least in a way that will do it justice. Is it great? In it's own twisted, surreal way, sure. It's littered with double entendres, to be sure, and a few nautical butt cheeks, too. I suppose the studio insisted on the latter. The bottom line is that we need SpongeBob, maybe more than we ever did. His good cheer in the face of disaster is downright inspirational. Plus, he can blow bubbles with the best of them.

The evil villain, Plankton, speaks for all of us when he says, "His chops are too righteous!"

The controversy over SpongeBob's sexual orientation has been quite absorbing but nowhere near as involving as this very funny movie based on the popular TV series on Nickelodeon. Just in case you've been living under a rock for the last five years, SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Mr. Krabs and all the residents of Bikini Bottom have become the most hip (and funny) half hour this side of "The Simpsons". More importantly, it's a program that almost all family members can watch without becoming offended (well, except for those folks wondering about SpongeBob's sexuality). It's a fun way to spend an hour and a half with the kids. After losing a treasured promotion to manage the Krusty Krab 2 restaurant because he's just a kid, SpongeBob is the only person who can stop Plankton from taking over Bikini Bottom. Plankton resorts to Plan Z (having used every other plan in the alphabet) to frame Mr. Krabs for the theft of King Neptune's crown. The diminutive Plankton hopes to discover the secret to the Krabby Patty and ultimately rule the undersea world! Meanwhile, Spongebob and his dim witted friend Patrick must travel to the dreaded Shell City to recover the King's crown and stop Plankton before it's too late.

Featuring a marvelous cast of guest voices including Jeffrey Tambor ("Arrested Development"), Scarlet Johansson ("Lost in Translation"), Clancy Brown ("The Shawshank Redemption"), Alec Baldwin and, of all people, David Hasselhoff, the film may lack the sparkle of the best episodes of the series but it more than makes up for this shortcoming with a number of witty gags. Kids will enjoy the antics of SpongeBob and Patrick while adult males will empathize King Neptune's attempts to hide his bald spot with his crown (he's desperate enough to resort to Hair in a Can at one point although that doesn't quite work out as planned) and envy David Hasselhoff as he uses his pecs to launch the duo back into the sea. There's also a serious message as Mindy the King's daughter encourages SpongeBob and Patrick to be kids and be OK with it.

Featuring a great transfer with bright and vivid colors, Bikini Bottom has never looked so, well, animated. A very sharp transfer with few digital artifacts to distract viewers from the absurd images, "Spongebob" looks better than any sponge has a right to. The 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround mix is used to good and sometimes very comic effect.

The 20 minute animatic segment gives viewers a peak into all the preparation work that went into producing the movie. Director Hillenburg's comments provide interesting and sometimes funny insights into the challenge of producing a movie much less a TV series as funny as this. The behind-the-scenes featurette is both charming and quite funny with a glimpse into everything from creating the absurd story at the heart of this film to the hilarious recording sessions featuring the voice cast. There's also a featurette The "THQ" game demo is actually quite fun but doesn't really provide that much of a taste as to what the game could do. The Case of Sponge "Bob" features Jean-Michel Cousteau in a tongue-in-cheek short documentary. We see an informative and fun discussion of real sponges with undersea footage narrated by Cousteau with writer/director Hillenburg. "Saving the Surf" features Chad Nelsen, Matt McClain and Steve Pezman founders of the Surfrider Foundation discussing the importance of keeping our environment clean and the impact of our pollution on the ocean and our beaches. The teaser trailer for "Submarine" features footage of "Das Boot", "U571" and "The Hunt for Red October" intercut with footage created for the cartoon trailer for "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie". There's also previews for other Paramount family friendly titles as well.

A funny visit with the denizens of the deep, "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" will keep you and the kids entertained. The film doesn't pander to kids and has just the right level of slapstick humor to keep adults entertained as well. Although it does have a serious message at its core, the film is a lot of fun.

10 great episodes, a must buy for all SpongeBob SquarePants fans, or anyone who has seen the show and finds it amusing.

Don't be a Scaredy Pants, buy the Season Sets!, September 30, 2004 By B-MAN "B"
First of all, understand that the content itself is 5 stars easy...it's Spongebob! The 3 stars is simply because these collections aren't as cool as the Season sets. The second release in the continuous line of Spongebob "themed" (compilation) DVDs, Halloween, includes 10 episodes that draw almost evenly from all three seasons of this awesome show. There's only one episode here actually set on Halloween ("Scaredy Pants"), but some of the others do have a related theme. For example, "Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost" and "I was a Teenage Gary". Not to mention there's the hilarious "Band Geeks" and not one but two episodes featuring Plankton, which is always good. As I said it's not the content, it's the representation. Considering all of these episodes will be available on the Season sets I have to recommend that be the way you get them. The "Halloween" DVD offers 3 episodes from Season 1, 3 from Season 2, and 4 from Season 3. For a casual fan wanting a good taste of some choice Spongebob, I would say pick it up, but for us Bikini Bottom loyalists and wanna be residents, the complete Season box sets are the only way to swim!

My family loves Halloween and especially Halloween specials. So we pre-ordered this one. It's a great DVD packed with 10 great episodes -- some are aboslutely hilarious. But buyers should note that there's only one truly Halloween-themed episode. The other 4 are loosely "spooky-themed" (i.e. monsters, robots, etc.). True, it's labeled as "Spooky Sea Tales" but the huge Halloween type and pumpkin image can be misleading. Nonethless, is this DVD worth it? YES. The extra 5 episodes make it even more of a value. Should you buy it? YES! Is it funny? YES!! This is SpongeBob at his best! Enough reading. Go buy and enjoy.

I rarely watch SpongeBob Squarepants on TV, so usually the first time I see the episodes is when they're released on DVD. I read some of the poor reviews of this set and thought the show would probably be better than they suggested. I thought wrong. There really is some magic lost in this season. There are some flashes of the usual brilliance here and there but, mostly, these episodes are forgettable. They sometimes take an idea and push it to the absurdly extreme ("Night Light," "Rise and Shine," "Spy Buddies"). Also, some seem a lot shorter than the others. A good sign for the next volume is that Disc 2 is much better than Disc 1, which indicates improvement during the season. I'll definitely be checking out Volume 2.

Disc 1 (2 stars):
"Friend or Foe" (2-parter)--Mr. Krabs tells a tale of when he and Plankton were adolescent chums picked on by their classmates and how they came up with the idea to start a hamburger joint. Cute but that stupid Patchy the Pirate keeps showing up.
"The Original Fry Cook"--SpongeBob meets Mr. Krabs's first fry cook, Jim, who makes patties so good they take SB on a spiritual journey (what was in those patties, anyway? The flashbacks do look like they were set in the '60s...hmmmm). Feeling inferior, SB resigns, but Jim explains why SB is actually the best fry cook for Mr. Krabs. This episode is unrealistic. How can anyone be a better fry cook than SB? Just watch "SB v. the Patty Gadget."
"Night Light"--After reading a scary story, SB becomes afraid of the dark and uses so many night lights he summons Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy and a fiendish moth. This episode is very annoying.
"Rise and Shine"--Observe a typical Patrick morning. This episode is totally lame! We all know Patrick is a moron but come on! His stupidity here is bordering on the ridiculous! It also seems very short but, for this episode, that's probably a good thing.
"Waiting"--After sending in 99 Kelpo box tops for a prize, SB becomes obsessed with waiting for his free toy to arrive in the morning. Not very good, except for the Patrick/gift/cake/fork bit.
"Fungus Among Us"--SB gets the ick and infects the entire Krusty Krab. Gross.

"Spy Buddies"--Mr. Krabs hires Patrick and SB as spies to watch Plankton's inevitable next scheme. The ending of this one is a little much.
"Boat Smarts"--An instructional film from Mrs. Puff showing a driver with boat smarts (Squidward) and a driver without boat smarts (SpongeBob). For once, SW is the positive example; however, in this film, I think it would be better to be the driver without the boat smarts as the one with them keeps getting into accidents.
"Good Ol' Whatshisname"--Mr. Krabs creates a contest to see which employee can learn the names of all the Krusty Krab customers. The prize being a cruise, Squidward, for once, is a willing participant. SB, of course, already knows all the customers' names; SW has to resort to more unorthodox measures. One of the better episodes, but I'm a little puzzled by the ending. How did Patrick end up behind bars?
"New Digs"--Was something cut from this ep? SB trips because he put his eye blinders on before racing to bed and, in the next scene, he shoots into bed with no comment. Anyway, SB oversleeps and clocks into work late. SB, of course, is devastated and decides to live at the Krusty Krab: a dream come true for SW but not for Krabs or his customers.
"Krabs A La Mode"--Mr. Krabs won't let anyone turn up his thermostat, so Plankton creates a freeze at the Krusty Krab, but they use the icey conditions to make money another way.

Disc 2 (4 stars):
"Roller Cowards"--SB and Patrick are afraid to ride Glove World's new sensation: the Fiery Fist O Pain, but both are ashamed to admit it. The mascot of Glove World is called "Glovey Glove"--I think the writers are starting to lose some of their creativity. Good episode, though.
"Bucket Sweet Bucket"--Plankton gets SB, Patrick and even Squidward to renovate the Chum Bucket while Plankton goes after what he really wants. I like how Squidward painted the restaurant.
"Breath of Fresh Squidward"--SW gets so mad at his neighbors he installs an electric fence around his house. He, of course, gets shocked and turns into a friendly, work-loving chum who makes SB jealous.
"To Love a Patty"--SB makes the perfect Krabby Patty, falls in love, and spends all his time with "her" even as "she" rots. A shower cap on a Krabby Patty??? You've got to be kidding!
"SpongeBob Versus the Patty Gadget"--Patchy the Pirate (actually tolerable here) tells a story--in Dr. Seuss-like style--about SB competing against a patty-making machine built by Squidward. I like the line "The crowd was impressed, they cheered full of glee. All except Patrick who had to go pee." This episode, while short, is pretty funny.
"Money Talks"--Mr. Krabs's wish comes true: he can talk to money. Be careful what you wish for!
"Slimy Dancing"--Squidward thinks he's a shoe-in to win a dance competition. When he doesn't make the cut, he takes over SpongeBob's body (SB is a sponge, afterall).
"The Krusty Sponge"--Food critic Gene Scallop--who looks suspiciously like Today show's film/book critic Gene Shalit--reports on the Krusty Krab and praises SpongeBob. Mr. Krabs decides to market SB by using his image on everything (hmmmm, sounds familiar).
"Sing a Song of Patrick"--Patrick writes a song and SB helps him get it on the radio. Actually, this episode does not work on my disc. Did anyone else have that problem?

Good, but the directors got bored, August 9, 2007 By Barbara J. Baker "myestore"
I loved the earlier seasons, and I'm ok with this new one, but the new episodes are not as clever as the first episodes in the first seasons. The new ones arn't as funny, the story lines arn't as good, and they have gotten WAY more childish, sadly. Also, my problem is that the new episodes have these stupid sing along songs much to frequently. SB used to be like a child/immature adult show. Now it's faded into one of those new Nick show types for babies. It's better than any other cartoon on Nick, but season 5, or maybe 6, will probably be the ending for the SB franchise.

When I buy the seasons, one by one, I will make sure to get this season because I love the show as a whole. But this season is definetly not as superior as seasons 1, 2, or 3.

Finally season 3 is out! I've played the tartar sauce out of the first two seasons and it is nice to have some new episodes on DVD even though most of these I've seen numerous times on television. This DVD set is much more compact than the other two with streamline cases but does not sacrifice the cool artwork. I like the rustic design of the case covers with the woodwork of the Krusty Krab. It also takes up far less room than the bulky season 1 and 2 sets. And, for those disappointed with not getting HELP WANTED (the pilot episode) with season 1, it is offered here as a bonus on disc 3. Here are the season 3 episodes:

Disc 1: The Algae's Always Greener: Plankton uses his advanced technological creation to trade lives with Mr. Krabs (complete with shirts and pants) and discovers that being the father of Pearl and owning a business that employs SpongeBob may not be all it's cracked up to be.
SpongeBob on Duty: White stuff on SpongeBob's nose makes Larry the Lobster mistake him for a fellow lifeguard. One problem: SpongeBob can't swim (????) Anyone else find something strange about this episode?
Club SpongeBob: I've seen this show so many times on TV, I'm already sick of it. Anyway, SpongeBob, Squidward, and Patrick find themselves lost in the middle of nowhere with only a magic conch shell to guide them.
My Pretty Seahorse: SB befriends a seahorse who threatens his job by eating everything in sight at the Krusty Krab.
Just One Bite: One of my favorites! Squidward is the only one who can resist a krabby patty, until he tastes one. He then becomes addicted and even fantasizes about marrying one! Hilarious!
The Bully: Flats the Flounder is the new student and decides to kick SB's butt.
Nasty Patty: Mrs. Krabs and SB concoct the most vile krabby patty for who they think is a fake health inspector. Reminds me of a Fawlty Towers ep.
Idiot Box: Squidward is skeptical that SB and Patrick can turn an ordinary cardboard box into an entertainment center through their imaginations.
Mermaidman and Barnacle Boy IV: SB gets hold of MM's utility belt and chaos ensues. "Oh boy! A squidward action figure!"
Doing Time: One of the craziest episodes. SB creates a wave of destruction (and cranberry juice) during his boating lesson and Mrs. Puff is arrested. SB and Patrick set out to break her out of the pen.
Snowball Effect: Squidward takes a game of snowball war a bit too seriously.
One Krab's Trash: Mr. Krabs sells SB a soda drinking hat and then is desperate to get it back when he finds out how much it's worth ("AAAA! A floating shopping list!").
As Seen on TV: SB appears in a Krusty Krab commercial for a split second and believes he is Mr. Celebrity.
Can You Spare a Dime?: After being accused of stealing, Squidward quits his job and ends up penniless and on the streets. SB takes him in and Squid becomes accustomed with being waited on. This ep is the only time I've seen SB really lose it.
No Weenies Allowed: Another of my favorites. SB tries to gain entrance into the Salty Spitoon where only the toughest sea creatures can join.
Squilliam Returns: Squidward pretends he owns a five-star restaurant (a re-vamped Krusty Krab) to impress his successful rival.

Disc 2:
Krab Borg: After watching a scary robot movie, SB is convinced Mr. Krabs is a robot.
Rock-A-Bye Bi-Valve: SB and Patrick take care of an orphaned baby scallop. Patrick proves he's not the most devoted of fathers.
Wet Painters: SB and Patrick must paint the inside of Mr. Krab's house without getting any paint on his wall hangings, particularly his first dollar. Excellent Patrick ep. Patrick and the candy machine is one of the funniest SB scenes ever.
Krusty Krab Training Video: What every Krusty Krab new employee must see. Will the secret krabby patty formula be revealed?
SponeBob's House Party: SB gets a party planning kit and has every detail scheduled. Luckily for his party guests, he gets locked out of his house.
Chocolate With Nuts: Classic! SB and Patrick try to be entrepreneurs by selling chocolate bars door-to-door. The old "fishwife" and her mother are hilarious.
Mermaidman and Barnacleboy V: Barnacleboy is tired of being treated like a kid and joins the dark side. Patrick, Sandy, SB, and Squid become not-so-super heroes.
New Student Starfish: Patrick comes to boating class with SB and gets SB in trouble.
Clams: Mr. Krabs celebrates earning his millionth dollar by taking his loyal crew clam fishing.
SpongeBob B.C.: Prehistoric Spongegar, Patar, and Squog discover fire. Double ep.
The Great Snail Race: SB forces Gary into a snail race with Squid's pedigree snail Snelly.
Mid-Life Crustacean: "Like an old has-been, Look at you old man, you've got multiple chins `cause you're old." Mr. Krabs yearns to feel young again. SB and Patrick may help him feel too young.
Born Again Krabs: A near-death experience causes Mr. Krabs to promise the Flying Dutchman he will no longer be a cheapskate or risk eternity in Davy Jones' locker.
I Had an Accident: SB break his derriere and decides to spend all his time indoors. Funny until it gets to that stupid gorilla bit.

Disc3:
Krabby Land: Mr. Krabs opens a crummy playground to lure children and their money to his restaurant.
The camping Episode: SB and Patrick go on a daring camping trip right outside their houses. Squidward joins and is attacked by a sea bear.
Missing Identity: SB loses his nametag and tries to get dim-witted Patrick to hep him re-trace his steps.
Plankton's Army: One of my favorites. Plankton gets his relatives (who are not quite at the same intellectual level) to force Mr. Krabs to give him the krabby patty formula. The ingredients may be too shocking for him to handle.
Lost Episode (The Sponge Who Could Fly): Double ep where SB dreams of flying with the jelly fish. Patchy the Pirate makes his always annoying appearance.
SpongeBob Meets the Strangler: SB has the Tattletale Strangler arrested for littering and the Strangler vows revenge.
Pranks A Lot: Patrick and SB buy invisible spray paint at the gag shop (they passed on the fake and real vomit) and start playing practical jokes.

In this landmark episode, viewers get all the POOP (People Order Our Patties) on what it takes to work at the Krusty Krab. These shows are so emotional to me. My daughter and I ,who just recentley died from cancer, watched theses show for hours in the hospital together. Great shows to share with your family over and over again.

It is unknown the status about the features labeled "unconfirmed", and what the disc break-up is going to be. My guess is if it includes way more bonus features than listed, then it would be discs 1-10 are the episodes (half a season per disc) and 11-14 are bonus discs, but only time will tell.

There will be a setup menu on each disc with audio and visual options, and presumably captions, and the packaging will be a 3D-lenticular slipcase housed in plexiglass. It sounds like a deal to me, and I'll be picking this up despite the fact I already own seasons 1-5 on DVD.

Most shows take about five seasons to reach that coveted 100 episode mark that leads them to syndication glory. While studios may only see the line as a cash cow, for the casual viewer 100 episodes represents the completion of at least two to five story arcs and perhaps even the rotation of a few characters in and out. Ah, story arcs - those are nice right? A few episodes tackling the development of a character or an important relationship amongst the characters? BALDERDASH! HASHDAGGERY!

Plot?! Story?! Depth!? Growth?! We need not these things!! These things are for lesser cartoons to consider. SpongeBob SquarePants needs not these things.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The First 100 Episodes arrived on my doorstep unexpectedly. The box was heavier than I ever expected and as I unwrapped it my mind raced trying to place which movies it could be. Yes, I figured it had to be like 6 movies crammed into that box. But no, it was a solid brick of SpongeBob. 14 discs encased in a typical DVD box set exterior with an extra, super-thick plastic case with bubbles sketched in to complement the cardboard box's design complete this goliath. This set is like a tank. Nickelodeon put a lot of care into the presentation to give the consumer a little extra nudge. After countless 8-10 episode disc releases, they've finally seen fit to put out a mammoth box set to give the serious SpongeBob fan something to sink their teeth into. Okay, so that's the outer casing, let's look at the innards.

As a 14-disc set there are 7 slim cases each adorned with the beaming happy face of one of the main characters. I for one think the Plankton cover is pretty funny, but to each their own. All of the artwork for the set is incredibly well done and the colors are absolutely beautiful. Again, it's clear Nickelodeon has put a lot into the set. So fans rejoice!

Each of the discs has 8 episodes with the typical two parts to each one. 8 x 14 = 112. So obviously, I lied. With 7 or 8 episodes a disc, the final disc is left to the four major extra features presentations. We'll get to those shortly, but it ought to be said that the big signs on the set's shrink wrap are somewhat misleading. They make very enthusiastic claims about the numerous hours of extra features but again, somewhat misleading.

The first 100 episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants can't be criticized for their content or plot because, as every fan of the show knows, no one watches SpongeBob for what it makes them think or feel. They watch it for all the things it distracts them from and helps them to forget. Kids love SpongeBob because his rationale is about on par with their own, and college kids love him because he's the perfect accompaniment to their...late night hedonistic activities? Yes, we'll leave it at that. What can be said for the show is that it visibly comes into its own from the first episode to the hundredth. The animation gets sharper, the writing smarter and the stories as inane and mindless as ever. So everyone wins. The sponge lives in a pineapple under the sea for chrissakes, don't expect too much from him. Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Mr. Lawrence, Sirena Irwin and Carolyn Lawrence all do splendid jobs as the voices and, as always, Frank Welker has a few roles here or there.

DVD Extra Features:

Each disc boasts about 2-4 optional audio commentaries. It's hard to find value in an audio commentary when the material in question is pretty much critic-proof, so let's move on to the features. The biggest hitter of the four, and easily the best, is "Square Roots: The Story of SpongeBob SquarePants" is a perfect little complement to a massive SpongeBob box set. All the SpongeBob cast and crew weigh in on this porous clown they've created and quite honestly - it gets pretty funny...and sometimes obscene. Mom, Dad, you might want to strip this disc from the set. The other three pale in comparison, especially since one of them is just the full-length music video "Kick-Wham-Pow-Bob". The other two, "Life Lessons from Bikini Bottom" (a summary of the show's pseudo morals) and "Help Wanted: The Seven Seas Edition" have their place but don't ever reach the candor and hilarity of "Square Root".

If you've refrained from buying those other sampler DVDs thus far, go get this one. It might set you back, but it's a huge solid brick of spongey goodness.

We own all of the original seasons (1-5) currently offered of SpongeBob SquarePants. We love them but they take up a lot of space and we constantly have the discs rotating throughout our house. We definitely will keep the originals but this set is just a little wider than the box of the 1st season set. Now when our son asks for a certain episode (which he does often) we can actually find it!

I just unpacked this item so I am not sure if discs 1-13 contain bonus features (other than commentaries). There are no extras listed and I haven't found any other extras on the discs with episodes. Also, the menus aren't animated as elaborately as the originals. I prefer the original menus on the previous separate season releases; they are animated (moving pictures) as opposed to one static picture and it is easier to select the specific show that you want on the older version menus. Although, the new menus seem to load more quickly.

Disc 14 contains the following special features:

If you have kids and a budget or you like to just "play all" of the episodes - I would recommend this one because it takes up so little space and the price is really good right now - a lot cheaper than if you bought all of the seasons separately.

SpongeBob (voiced by Tom Kenny), an arrested adolescent in the mold of Pee-wee Herman, works at a fast-food restaurant that serves something called Krabby Patties (as the restaurant owner is himself a crab, it's not clear what exactly they're made of). His best friend Patrick Starfish (Bill Fagerbakke) lives under a rock and has an IQ in the lower digits. Still, their friendship carries them through many a tight spot as they strive for manliness. Anyone seeking a coherent world will be disappointed; in this undersea adventure, things catch on fire or seem to be surrounded by air whenever it's convenient for a gag. The jokes are often more silly than actually funny, but there's an undeniably energetic joviality to the proceedings. Relentlessly optimistic, drunk and defeated, man-child, sponge-man -- this movie has it all. Most of the parents in the audience didn't get it. But I've been an outspoken SpongeBob fan for years. Hell, I'll bet I like the television show even more than my children do -- and they like it a lot.

It's hard to describe this film, at least in a way that will do it justice. Is it great? In it's own twisted, surreal way, sure. It's littered with double entendres, to be sure, and a few nautical butt cheeks, too. I suppose the studio insisted on the latter. The bottom line is that we need SpongeBob, maybe more than we ever did. His good cheer in the face of disaster is downright inspirational. Plus, he can blow bubbles with the best of them.

The evil villain, Plankton, speaks for all of us when he says, "His chops are too righteous!"

The controversy over SpongeBob's sexual orientation has been quite absorbing but nowhere near as involving as this very funny movie based on the popular TV series on Nickelodeon. Just in case you've been living under a rock for the last five years, SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Mr. Krabs and all the residents of Bikini Bottom have become the most hip (and funny) half hour this side of "The Simpsons". More importantly, it's a program that almost all family members can watch without becoming offended (well, except for those folks wondering about SpongeBob's sexuality). It's a fun way to spend an hour and a half with the kids. After losing a treasured promotion to manage the Krusty Krab 2 restaurant because he's just a kid, SpongeBob is the only person who can stop Plankton from taking over Bikini Bottom. Plankton resorts to Plan Z (having used every other plan in the alphabet) to frame Mr. Krabs for the theft of King Neptune's crown. The diminutive Plankton hopes to discover the secret to the Krabby Patty and ultimately rule the undersea world! Meanwhile, Spongebob and his dim witted friend Patrick must travel to the dreaded Shell City to recover the King's crown and stop Plankton before it's too late.

Featuring a marvelous cast of guest voices including Jeffrey Tambor ("Arrested Development"), Scarlet Johansson ("Lost in Translation"), Clancy Brown ("The Shawshank Redemption"), Alec Baldwin and, of all people, David Hasselhoff, the film may lack the sparkle of the best episodes of the series but it more than makes up for this shortcoming with a number of witty gags. Kids will enjoy the antics of SpongeBob and Patrick while adult males will empathize King Neptune's attempts to hide his bald spot with his crown (he's desperate enough to resort to Hair in a Can at one point although that doesn't quite work out as planned) and envy David Hasselhoff as he uses his pecs to launch the duo back into the sea. There's also a serious message as Mindy the King's daughter encourages SpongeBob and Patrick to be kids and be OK with it.

Featuring a great transfer with bright and vivid colors, Bikini Bottom has never looked so, well, animated. A very sharp transfer with few digital artifacts to distract viewers from the absurd images, "Spongebob" looks better than any sponge has a right to. The 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround mix is used to good and sometimes very comic effect.

The 20 minute animatic segment gives viewers a peak into all the preparation work that went into producing the movie. Director Hillenburg's comments provide interesting and sometimes funny insights into the challenge of producing a movie much less a TV series as funny as this. The behind-the-scenes featurette is both charming and quite funny with a glimpse into everything from creating the absurd story at the heart of this film to the hilarious recording sessions featuring the voice cast. There's also a featurette The "THQ" game demo is actually quite fun but doesn't really provide that much of a taste as to what the game could do. The Case of Sponge "Bob" features Jean-Michel Cousteau in a tongue-in-cheek short documentary. We see an informative and fun discussion of real sponges with undersea footage narrated by Cousteau with writer/director Hillenburg. "Saving the Surf" features Chad Nelsen, Matt McClain and Steve Pezman founders of the Surfrider Foundation discussing the importance of keeping our environment clean and the impact of our pollution on the ocean and our beaches. The teaser trailer for "Submarine" features footage of "Das Boot", "U571" and "The Hunt for Red October" intercut with footage created for the cartoon trailer for "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie". There's also previews for other Paramount family friendly titles as well.

A funny visit with the denizens of the deep, "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" will keep you and the kids entertained. The film doesn't pander to kids and has just the right level of slapstick humor to keep adults entertained as well. Although it does have a serious message at its core, the film is a lot of fun.

SpongeBob's sophomore year on television was as loopy as season 1, way down in the underwater town known as Bikini Bottom. The 40 animated episodes on SpongeBob SquarePants: The Complete Second Season find the cackling little optimist-hero and his bizarre community back in action, defending the honor of fast-food eatery the Krusty Krab, redefining the meaning of friendship along rather disturbing lines, and presenting new challenges and opportunities for SpongeBob--which means he's almost certain to alienate and offend someone every time. "Something Smells" finds the unfailingly friendly SpongeBob plagued by an antisocial problem with profoundly bad breath, about which he hasn't a clue, of course. "Squid's Day Off" features fan favorite Squidward the curmudgeon in priceless scenes of gnawing anxiety after he leaves the Krusty Krab in SpongeBob's typically incapable hands. Spongebob has to be the funniest cartoon ever created. Last year when the complete 1st season came out, I got it right away and watched it all the time. Then I waited for the 2nd season to come out and finally it's here. Although, I was sad to see that this dvd didn't feature some of my favorite stories like Squilliam Returns, Rock-a-bye Bivalve, No Weenies Allowed, The Krusty Krab Training Video, and Just One Bite. But the episodes on here are funny and season 2 is the best season. Season 3 is good too but I recently saw the worst Spongebob episode ever, I Had An Accident. Fans of this program already know how fun and witty it is for both kids and adults. Here's what we have to look forward to when this second season DVD finally comes out:

1. Something Smells / Bossy Boots: SpongeBob gets bad breath from his sundae made of ketchup and onions. Pearl gives the Krusty Krab--I mean, the Kuddly Krab--a makeover.
2. Your Shoe's Untied / Squid's Day Off: SpongeBob forgets how to tie his shoes. Squidward is left in charge of the Krusty Krab and decides to leave early only to keep returning for fear of what SpongeBob might do. In this episode, we see Squidward actually swimming in a bathtub, which is a very funny sight!
3. Big Pink Loser / Bubble Buddy: Patrick wants a trophy and decides to imitate award magnet SpongeBob. SpongeBob makes a new friend that the rest of the town does not appreciate.
4. Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III / Squirrel Jokes: SpongeBob and Patrick foolishly unleash the evil ManRay. SpongeBob discovers that the only way to get laughs during his comedy act is to make fun of Sandy (this one is one of my favorites).
5. Christmas Who?: Patchy the Pirate hosts a half hour special where SpongeBob brings Christmas to Bikini Bottom.
6. Dying for Pie / Imitation Krabs: Squidward thinks he's given SpongeBob a fatal pie, and stays with him during his "last hours." Plankton masquerades as Mr. Krabs.
7. Wormy / Patty Hype: SpongeBob and Patrick take care of Sandy's pets and freak out when her worm is eaten by an evil butterfly-looking thing. SpongeBob markets Pretty Patties.
8. Survival of the Idiots / Dumped: Sandy is hibernating, but that doesn't stop SpongeBob and Patrick from visiting. Gary the Snail finds a new best buddy in Patrick, much to the chagrin of SpongeBob.
9. Grandma's Kisses / Squidville: SpongeBob is teased for kissing his grandmother. Squidward finds a neighborhood more accommodating to his lifestyle.
10. No Free Rides / I'm Your Biggest Fanatic: Mrs. Puff decides to pass SpongeBob no matter what. SpongeBob hangs out with an expert Jellyfisher.
11. You Wish ("Shanghaied") / Gary Takes a Bath: SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward get three wishes on the flying Dutchman's ship. Someone ends up taking a bath...and it isn't Gary.
12. Pressure / The Smoking Peanut: The gang starts up the old "whose better? land creatures or sea creatures?" debate. Clamu is going through emotional distress.
13. Pre-Hibernation Week / Life of Crime: Sandy has only one week to burn carbs before hibernating-can SpongeBob survive that long? SpongeBob and Patrick become fugitives after stealing a balloon.
14. The Secret Box / Band Geeks: Patrick has a secret box. Squidward starts up a marching band to show up rival Squilliam.
15. Sailor Mouth / Artist Unknown: My all-time favorite! SpongeBob and Patrick learn some new words. The greatest artist in his own mind, Squidward, is bettered by his pupil, SpongeBob.
16. Jellyfish Hunters / Fry Cook Games: SpongeBob uses jellyfish jelly on his krabby patty which starts a new craze and is bad news for the jellyfish. Just in time for the Olympics, well it would be if this DVD would come out sooner! SpongeBob and Patrick compete in the fry cook games.
17. The Bully / Just One Bite: SpongeBob encounters a new classmate who wants to kick his butt. Another favorite of mine: Krabby patty-hating Squidward discovers what he has been missing in life.
18. Sandy, SpongeBob and the Worm / Squid on Strike: An Alaskan Bullworm invades Bikini Bottom. Squid takes on Mr. Krab's "house of servitude."
19. Procrastination / I'm With Stupid: SpongeBob procrastinates on writing a paper. SpongeBob pretends to be a moron to make Patrick look smart in front of his parents.

Considering how long it is taking to get this season out on DVD, there should be lots of extras as in the First Season set.

The good--the packaging was much more creative that Season 1, Season 2 is my favorite season, and the menu is easier to use.

The bad--where are the multiple endings for "Shanghaied/Make A Wish"? The audio commentary is a complete waste, filled mostly with comments like "uh, this is my favorite part....". The added features, other than "Around the World with Spongebob" are dull.

I know the team was probably busy working on the movie, but couldn't they have devoted a bit more time to this compilation?
