Celine O’Donnell is the French artisan behind Petit Pois Designs. Working out of her studio in Nice, Celine makes all her jewelry by hand in small batches. Her latest collection, Sway, is an exercise in mod geometry, with a nod towards native culture in shapes and color combos.

We checked out the Ndebele Petit Boomerang necklace from the Sway collection. All Sway pieces are made of cut and lacquered walnut tree wood. Don’t be thrown off by the idea of hanging a chunk of wood around your neck. The necklace is remarkably lightweight and smoothly polished. The chain attaches to either end of the necklace to ensure it lays evenly while on.

This week's challenge: create a costume and backstory based on a certain film genre.

This week’s costuming challenge was disappointing – most of the outfits were closer to RTW than film costumes. I will say that it is probably due to this being a one-day challenge. Had the designers had two days, I would like to think that they could make costumes that were far more extravagant.

On to the fashions…

Great backstory, too" title="proje4065" />

Someone want to clue her in on what saloon girls were?" title="proje4064" />

Fabulous" title="proje4063" />

It screams slutty BCBG" title="proje4062" />

Spoiler Alert! Episode 4 of Project Runway is a dull one, with a boring challenge and bland designs.

Was it just me, or was this episode boring? Episode 4 saw the designers having to create cocktail dresses for a client – their models. The “twist?” They only have 12 hours to do it. Snooze.

There was no drama. The models were not difficult to work with, and didn’t make any outrageous demands. The outfits were equally dull. Personally, I didn’t think any of them were particularly spectacular. The judges made multiple comments to different designers about the fabric looking cheap. Why can’t the camera operators get a couple good close-ups? And frankly, I am bored with this cast. There are no strong personalities. I find most of the designers to be boring and a little whiny.

Okay, enough whining from me. Let’s get to the dresses:

The picture makes it look a little blah, but I remember liking it on the runway" title="proje3906" />

I found it average, but the ribbons on the bodice are really bad." title="proje3905" />

Spoiler alert! How do beachwear and avant garde designs mesh? Not well, obviously

I have no runway photos for this episode, but frankly I didn’t find the designs this week particularly memorable. The designers were divided into teams of two, which is almost always a recipe for disaster. It certainly was for Qristyl and Epperson who fought every step of the way. The challenge this week was to team up and create a California surfer girl-inspired outfit. But that would be too easy, so just before the end of the first day, a second challenge was added: an avant garde piece to compliment the beach look.

It seemed like a weird combo. It’s not like a casual and evening look to compliment each other; it is two completely opposite ends of the spectrum. It was just way too random. An avant garde outfit should be one of the best challenges; instead it was tacked on at the end, offering few pieces that were interesting. A neoprene mini dress (the winning look); a lacy lingerie outfit (one of the losing looks) and lots and lots of tulle, ruffles, and volume. It was just blah.

On the upside, Mitchell was finally sent packing. I can’t believe it took them this long to kick him out. He was randomly picked as team leader, and in one of his confessionals, he actually said that he was going to choose his partner based on who would carry him! He chose Ra’mon, who did indeed carry Mitchell – he did about 95% of all the work, from conception to execution. At least he was fair about it and admitted that Ra’mon did all the work. He was whiney and lazy, and simply didn’t show any skill. I’m so glad he’s gone. But I still miss Malvin.

Bonus for this episode: Tim Gunn in flip-flops! He doesn’t look too thrilled about.

Spoiler Alert!

This week’s challenge was to create a pregnancy outfit for model/actress Rebecca Romijn (I will never get used to without the “Stamos” at the end). This was shot back when she was carrying twins, so she had a sizable bump. The designers came up with outfits for a variety of occasions. Several of the outfits were so cute I would wear them in a non-pregnancy size. Shirin’s winning outfit was a beautifully draped cocktail-length dress and complimentary jacket.

The bottom two came down to Malvin’s “bird” concept piece, and Mitchell’s casual around town look. Malvin’s outfit was not flattering, but at least it was well constructed and followed a vision. Fashion doesn’t just have to be clothing; it can – and should – be art. Mitchell’s tee-cardi-shorts combo, while wearable, were dull, and those “shorts” were so dreadfully constructed that I can’t believe he made it through. They honestly looked like a big, droopy diaper. I would always take vision and construction over wearable and sloppy.

Tell us who you thought deserved to go home, and check out all the outfits after the jump.

Spork Fashion wants to know: which red carpet design did you like best from the premiere of Project Runway?

Warning! The following article contains spoilers!

I’m a little late to the party… but how thrilled are you that Project Runway is back?

So far, none of the designers have really stood out to me. There’s the former meth addict, the raver chick, the guy whose model screwed him over, and the chick with the really messed up name (Qristyl? That spelling makes my head hurt). I know it is only the first episode, but I really want them to start standing out. Crazy outfits, crazy designs, crazy drama – give me something! On a technical note, I feel like we didn’t get a good look at all the designs as they went down the runway. The camera kept cutting back to Lindsay Lohan, and frankly I wanted to see the dresses!

<img width="99" height="150" src="http://www.sporkfashion.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/proje3757-99x150.jpg" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="Mitchell: Yeah, it was bad - especially that collar thing. Kill some time before the premiere by reading our interview with the world-famous stylist. Rachel tells us about the new season of the show, the new season of fashion, and offers some of her best styling tips.

In shooting this new season, what do you think you learned from doing the first season that helped you doing this next round of episodes?
I think it’s like anything else in your life. You do something once and you sort of learn what works and what doesn’t work and mistakes you made the first time around, you do everything in your power to not make them again.

I think somewhere in the first episode you say that Taylor is the foundation of your business. That looks like there’s going to be maybe a crack in the foundation. Is that a big part of this group of episodes?
I think it is. I don’t think it’s as much a part as last season. I think Brad and Taylor both grow as people. Of course they have their problems like they always do. I mean it’s definitely a part of it and she is the foundation. But there’s always going to be cracks in the foundation.

Before the first season you were in the public eye already for various reasons, some of them personal. But the show is really the first inside look into who you are and what it is that you do. How do you feel the first season changed people’s perceptions of you and maybe even how did it change your professional life?
It’s a bit ironic because I think that when I decided to do the show one of my apprehensions was that this is going to get people more fueled to say nasty things about me. And in fact I think what happened is I really was just myself and then I think people actually made an accurate judgment about me. You know, whether they like me or not, I think that at least if they watch the show they can form a real opinion of who I am because it is who I am. I don’t wear two hats from my personal life and my professional life or on the show.

It looks like this season is going to feature a lot more designers and a lot of bigger names. Was that something that you intended going in?
Absolutely. Absolutely. I’ve always said this from the beginning, the designers are my heroes. They’re my celebrities. So like for me, you know, standing there talking to Karl Lagerfeld or Christian Lacroix, I’m like a 16-year-old teenager. Even though if I’ve met them several times before, each time is like the first time. And it’s really important for me to take the viewer into that world, into that fantasy world and have them kind of see them up close and personal, you know. That’s very important for me; going to Paris is a huge, huge priority for me.

What designers and pieces and trends you’re hot on for the fall, especially for women over 35? What do you see women wearing and loving this season?
I think it’s a lot about amazing tuxedo jackets, you know, casual or dressy and wearing them with t-shirts or just white classic button ups and a great pair of jeans and a pair of heels. I think that’s just such a great look for everybody no matter what your age is. I mean that’s definitely my fall favorite at the moment.

What designers are doing really great collections right now that you love?
So many. Too many to name. But I would say Balmain is amazing; Lanvin… I think Gucci was an incredible season. Marc Jacobs, and Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton is amazing. Chanel is pretty flawless. I love Phillip Lim. Phillip Lim is fantastic. And too many to name.

Do you have any tips on how to cultivate ageless style?
When you see pictures of 17 year old models I think you have to really take the time to think “is that going to work on me? Is that appropriate for me? Should I be in a denim miniskirt right now? Should I buy high boots if I’m, 55 years old?” I mean, I wouldn’t want to put an age on it to be honest, but I also think that you dress how you feel. I believe in age appropriate dressing to a point. But I do think the best thing to do is to spend your money wisely and buy pieces that are not going to be out of style in two months from now.

Stick to the classics pretty much?
Yeah. Classics, but try and do classics with a little bit of a twist. A little bit of excitement in it, whether it’s a cuff on a sleeve or a lapel on a jacket or a ruffle on a shirt, you know, so you don’t get too boring.

As far as green designers, are there any that you like that are using like eco friendly materials and will you have any on the show this season?
I think Stella McCartney is probably someone who started that trend, you know, and really showed how to do an entire collection of luxury clothing and accessories, being 100% environmentally correct and it’s pretty incredible. She does it all the way down to her skin care. To be honest, there’s a ton of them right now. I think that people are doing such a great job. And even designers that don’t have full collections of green, I mean they’re doing some, which I think is great.

When you saw yourself on Season 1, what about yourself did you see that you wanted to change for Season 2?
I wanted to wear much, much less makeup. Much, much less makeup. I said oh my God, and I really – do I really look like that every day? I don’t think that I’d change what I was in Season 1 because if I did that I mean I’d sort of be acting not as myself. Because I really am that person, you know. So it’s hard to really change anything. You look at things and say oh, maybe I could have handled that situation better. Maybe I should be harder on my team. Maybe I should have, you know, thought about that more or whatever. Maybe I shouldn’t have fallen apart the way I did or whatever. But, you know, I mean that’s who I am. You can’t really control your emotion from day to day. So I think it’s who I am for better or for worse, that’s me.

When the camera was turned off after the first season, was it a relief? What was the first thing you did?
In both seasons I literally just went right back to work the next day. So I mean the show for me it’s exhausting and it’s challenging and it’s mentally draining because I’m an executive producer on the show too. I’m very, very, very hands on with the show. I think when it’s over, I just really want it to be something that I’m proud of and that really gives an accurate depiction of who I am and who my team is and what we do and

What’s the best piece of advice you offer to a celebrity or one of your clients when it comes to dressing for the red carpet?
I would have to say that you should always, always, always take a million photographs of yourself, with high flash, with low flash, with back light, to make sure nothing is sheer. Make sure every angle is flattering. You know, that sort of thing. That applies to red carpet on and off.

What’s the easiest way to update your look for fall?
Get a great coat, like a great trench coat that you could throw on over anything, or a cropped leather jacket that you can throw on top of all your dresses. You can add tights to anything, and ankle boots are great.

When it comes to dressing for your body type, what should girls keep in mind?
That you shouldn’t take trends from the runway and assume that they’re going to work on you. Meaning that, if someone is sending skinny jeans and leggings down the runway and they don’t look good on you then don’t wear them. Stick to your wide leg jeans. Stick to your slouchy trousers if that’s what you look better on you. You have to interpret trends for yourself. You can’t just copy them because it’s what the models are wearing.

Who’s one of your favorite people to dress?
It’s really like picking your favorite child. I can’t. I mean, the women that I work with are just so extraordinary for so many different reasons. Kate Hudson, Eva Mendez, Anne Hathaway, Liv Tyler, Demi Moore. They’re all so fantastic, and they all just have their own personalities and their styles are so different. So at the end of the day it’s really just playing dress up in a million different ways with a million different characters and personalities and what one person’s favorite thing is the other person’s thing that they would never wear.

What was your biggest fashion mistake?
Oh God. I would say the 80s. The 80s was the worst. You know, at the time I thought it looked great. The huge, really big hair, midriff showing all the time. My dresses were so short and then I would wear acid washed jeans. Technically it was the style at the time. But wow do I look back and be like what was I thinking. Why didn’t anyone stop me? How did my parents let me out of the house?

What about the biggest fashion mistake you see on other women?
I think it’s not one specific thing as much as it’s combining the wrong things. You know, kind of wearing too many trends at once. I’ve seen women who are trying to wear animal prints, and they wear an entire animal print outfit with an animal print bag and an animal print shoe and I’m like oh, too much. The safe way to go is that if you want to rock an animal print then keep it to one item. You know, your bag or your shoe or your jacket. Keep everything else simple. But don’t wear more than one at once. Don’t wear a leopard print jacket and a leopard print bag and a leopard print shoe.

You had mentioned H&M and Topshop and all of those places for kind of recessionista fashion. But do you ever see value of quality over the price? Is the price for those pieces worth it or should you be spending your money on something that might last you throughout several seasons?
I think it really depends on who you are to be honest. I think it’s a very case specific type of thing. I have people in my life that will save every dime and dollar to buy that one Louis Vuitton bag. And then I have friends that have a very limited budget but they want to get the most for their money. So they’ll buy five or ten things for the same money. I think that it really depends what you’re trying to fill in your wardrobe. Are you missing that great bag? Are you missing key wardrobe pieces? I used to think that if clothes were very inexpensive then they wouldn’t last and I don’t think that’s the case anymore. I think the industry has figured out ways to make good quality clothes for very low prices. And I think they’ve had to with this economy.

You don’t have to name names but what was one of your worst experiences dressing someone?
I’ve had a few clients that I fired because they made my assistants cry or they were nasty to my team and I won’t stand for that. I’ve had zippers break before clients are about to get on the carpet. I’ve had a pair of leather pants rip on stage during a performance on a client. There’s always disasters and usually the public doesn’t know about it, which is good.

Are there any fashion trends you are glad to see go or hoping that they go?
I said acid washed jeans should go and now they’re back more than ever. They’re being done so well that now I feel like I have to retract my statement. Now they’re actually really cute and I like what I’m seeing. So, not really because I feel like all these trends that we were like “oh, never come back again,” they’re back. The designers are so brilliant that they just do a great, kind of modern spin on it. So it looks great instead of outdated.

What are your plans for New York Fashion Week? Are there any young designers that you’re especially excited to see?
I love Pablo Guerron. I love Thakoon. I love Phillip Lim. I love Jason Wu. He’s so adorable. So sweet. There’s a bunch. I think Chris Benz is great. There’s a lot of goodies. There’s a lot of the new young talent out there and I love it. I love to see it.

How do you handle situations if a client ever lands on a worst dressed list?
The truth is it’s only happened a few times. And when it did they were on like, one or two worst dressed in the main stream tabloids, and then they were on the best dressed Women’s Wear Daily and Vogue and Bazaar and stuff like that. Most of my clients don’t really get too affected by that because in their minds it just means they took a chance and did something a little outside the box. I personally don’t get affected by it. If my client’s upset about it then of course I’d be upset about it. But I don’t really let it determine how I pull or what decisions we make.

What advice would you give girls to feel better about the clothes that she can wear and the ones that she does like to wear, as opposed to what the models wear?
I think that sometimes looking at models and thinking that that’s what you’re supposed to look like is a very dangerous mind game to play. It’s not the norm. These girls come from all over the world. They’re very young. They’re very tall and they’re not totally mature yet. I think that you just have to look at yourself and say, “okay what are my best assets. Is it my legs? Is it my height? Do I have great shoulders? Do I have a great stomach?” And take whatever it is about your body that you love the most and put the most attention there. If you have a great upper body then show that. If you have a great lower body then show that. If you’re not tall, then wear heels. And if you’re confident in your height, then wear flats. You know, it’s one of those things.

You really have to look at yourself and say, “what do I love most about myself” and just take that and run with it. There is fashion and there is style and there are amazing clothes and jewels and accessories for everybody. You can’t look to other people and wish you looked like that. It’s not healthy and it’s going to mess with your mind forever to be honest. It’s a very dangerous game to get wrapped up in.

Do you have any advice for girls who look up to you in terms of your style and how you got into your career?
100% passion. Never ever be driven by money. Just be driven by what you love. It was my grandfather that taught me that. I didn’t know what I was going to do with my life and I thought I was going to be a psychiatrist. And my grandfather said take what it is that you love and success will come because you’re going to work that much harder at it. And I for one cannot work really hard at something that doesn’t interest me. I respect those that can suck it up and just do something because it’s what they think they’re supposed to do. But my advice is that if you love it, work really hard and you’ll get to where you want to be.

I hear you’re doing your own line of bags and jewelry and accessories. What’s the situation on that?
Actually I’m launching an entire collection of accessories on QVC. It’ll preview during September fashion week at the QVC fashion show. But the full collection will launch in October. I’m doing a line of jewelry, scarves, sunglasses, bags, a ton of stuff. I’m so excited.

Where are you finding time to do all that?
I’m not a big sleeper. I never have been. I just need to be excited about what I’m doing all the time. So when I finish one thing, I’m always thinking of the next thing.

Are you going to do another book?
I think I am. I’m getting ready to do another book. I always said I’d do my next one when I had enough to say. Tt’s starting to come to me now. I think I have more to say.

What’s one fashion item that every woman should have?
Hard question to ask me. What do I think every woman should have? I think they should have a selection of basic jewelry. You know, a great statement necklace, a great pair of earrings, a big cocktail ring. Then you can dress up any outfit. And it’s also not size dependent. That’s the best thing about jewelry. Anyone can wear it. You don’t even have to try it on sometimes, which is great. Just buy it because you love it. And what else… I would say some great coats. Maybe like, a short leather jacket, and a longer jacket. You can give any outfit some flavor. And obviously a great pair of heels. A black patent pump is something you’ll never regret.

What’s something that’s totally worth the splurge?
A bag. If you buy one that’s somewhat classic but spend a lot of money on it, you’ll carry it forever.

How you deal with clients who don’t want to be part of the show? Do you ask certain clients?
I don’t really ask many of them to be a part of the show to be honest. At the end of the day if it happens organically and something is going on with a client I ask if we can film it. If they say yes, then great. But I don’t run around and solicit my clients and beg them to be part of the show because the show isn’t really about celebrities. It’s really about business. It’s about fashion. I don’t think it’s my client’s job to be on my show – they have enough going on.

Where you get your influences from?
Designers. And icons of the 60s and 70s: Marianne Faithful, Sharon Tate, Bianca Jagger, Ali McGraw, Bridgett Bardot, Twiggy. But really it’s the designers at the end of the day. YSL, Halston, Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld. I look to them to dictate what’s happening and then I interpret that for myself.

Do you keep all the clothes you’ve ever worn? Do you give them away?
I archive them because I can’t get rid of my prized possessions. I can’t part with them because I collect a lot of vintage and things that I can’t ever imagine getting rid of. Even if I’m not going to wear them for a long time, I have to know that they’re there.

So what exactly is the archive process? How do you keep track of them? Do you take photos of them?
Yeah, I keep photos, keep super organized. Things I know I’m not going to wear for a long time go into my archives and I have them in another location. And then I hope to give them to my daughter some day.

How do you organize your closet?
Some by designer. Some by long dresses, short dresses, short jackets, shoes by color, things like that.

Hyde Yoga Wear is exactly what you want in workout clothing. Born from passion, made from organics, and easy on the wallet.

Designer Anne-Kerr Kennedy turned to yoga as rehab for a running injury. Yoga didn’t just heal her body; it gave her a whole new outlook on life. After ten years devoted to the practice, she quit her corporate job and created Hyde Yoga Wear. The line is made of organic cottons, with a wide variety of styles and colors. Price points are more affordable than most workout clothing – an entire outfit is around $100.

Spork Fashion’s pick from the line are the Twisted Seam leggings. Lightweight, breathable cotton/spandex leggings have seams that twist and ruche at the knee. It is the comfort and flexibility of a legging, but fancier – you can pick these babies out of a lineup. In other words, Hyde’s Twisted Seam leggings can beat the crap out of your leggings.

Oh, and they aren’t just for yoga – I like Hyde for pilates. And napping.
