Simpson walks out jail and back home in Florida

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (CNN) -- Former NFL star O.J. Simpson remained quiet and expressionless as he and his girlfriend brushed through a crush of reporters to an SUV early Thursday after flying in from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Video from outside Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport showed Simpson -- dressed in a gray suit, white shirt and white visor -- getting into a Ford Excursion parked curbside, just after midnight. His girlfriend, Christine Prody, was wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap.

Simpson sat in an aisle seat in economy class and smiled and nodded as other passengers took photos of him with cell phones and digital cameras, The Associated Press reported.

New York Post reporter Steve Dunleavy, who was on the same U.S. Air flight as Simpson, told reporters that "between dozing and watching the movie 'Oceans 13,' " Simpson "didn't look the least stressed. In fact, he was rather relaxed."

Simpson, 60, was free to return to his home in Miami after posting a $125,000 bond after a court hearing in a Las Vegas sports memorabilia robbery case.

Following a judge's orders, Simpson also turned over his passport to his attorneys before being released from the Clark County Detention Center.
Judge Joe Bonaventure ordered him not to have contact with any of the victims, witnesses or co-defendants connected to the alleged armed robbery in a Las Vegas hotel room last week.

Simpson faces 11 charges, including 10 felonies. The two counts of first-degree kidnapping using a deadly weapon could bring a sentence of life in prison if he's convicted.

At a news conference after the hearing, attorney Yale Galanter said Simpson will plead not guilty to all the charges at an arraignment scheduled for the week of October 22.

He and four co-defendants are accused of entering a Las Vegas hotel room and pointing guns at two men -- Alfred Beardsley and Bruce Fromong -- as they took sports memorabilia, along with Fromong's cell phone and Beardsley's cap and sunglasses.

The items in the room where the alleged robbery took place included various baseballs, plaques, a historical photo featuring J. Edgar Hoover and a mobile phone, a police report said.
Prosecutors contend Simpson and his co-defendants -- Walter Alexander, Clarence Stewart, Michael McClinton and Charles Cashmore -- committed kidnapping because they intended to use a weapon to hold or detain the men.

Cashmore, 40, turned himself in Wednesday, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation. He was one of the two men seen in a surveillance video released Tuesday by authorities.

Police are requesting the public's assistance in finding the other man in the video.

Beardsley, 46, considered a key witness, was also arrested Wednesday. He was booked into the Clark County jail on a fugitive warrant, booking records show.

Beardsley was convicted of stalking in 2003 in California and was sentenced to two years, according to the California Department of Corrections. It's unclear how much of that sentence he served, but he was still on parole at the time of the alleged Las Vegas robbery.
Before his arrest, Simpson said he was merely retrieving sports memorabilia that belonged to him and said no guns were used. Police, however, said Simpson orchestrated the incident and that the suspects had at least two guns, which authorities recovered during searches.

War of the words

50 Cent has a long history of initiating beefs before he releases a new album. His debut, 2003’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’, rode a well-publicized dispute with Ja Rule — remember him? — to six weeks at the top of the charts. His second album, 2005’s The Massacre, was shaping up to be a disappointment until 50 kicked the Game out of his G-Unit crew. But 2007 has been 50’s worst year yet. G-Unit haven’t come up with a hit; worse, a video he shot with Robin Thicke leaked and in a storm of fury he threatened to fire everyone in G-Unit but Tony Yayo. So it was neither surprising nor particularly exciting to hear that 50 had put Kanye West in his sights. At least, not till he promised the hip-hop Web site SOHH.com that he’d stop making solo albums if Curtis (Aftermath) is outsold by Kanye West’s Graduation (Roc-a-Fella) — both were released on September 11 after the usual leaks. Suddenly, there was a reason to pay attention.

Of course, 50 doesn’t care about Kanye West, not even enough to waste one single line on Curtis dissing the little chipmunk. Curtis turns out to be a pretty conservative effort, stocked with the tropes you expect from a gangsta-rap mogul. The worst are the lover-man tracks, in which he always sounds like a jerk. Even though, on “Follow My Lead,” he asks the object of his affection to “put your trust in me,” the clumsy Romeo can’t even be bothered to take her panties off. “Just move ’em to the side,” he advises on “Amusement Park.”

Then there are the frowning, violent tracks, but 50 has never been quite unstable or paranoid enough to make those work. As Jadakiss said on his diss track “Animal,” “Since when has it become cool to get shot/And not shoot back?” The target audience for 50’s crime songs have been mostly angry eighth-graders and wanna-be gangsters who enjoy laughing over how much of a “faggot” Lil Wayne is.

A few tracks come together. His collaboration with the Timberlake/Timbaland hit factory, “Ayo Technology,” isn’t a monster or anything, but the buzzing, up-tempo, schizoid synths are satisfyingly dizzying. The best track, “I Get Money,” works because 50 sounds as if he were having fun with his arrogance. “Get a tan? I’m already black/Rich? I’m already that. . . . I ride, wreck the new Jag/I just buy the new Jag/Now nigga why you mad?/Oh, you can’t do that.” He even sounds like the guy who once “had a vision and made a decision/Bein’ broke is against my religion.” Petty cynicism can be fun if the jokes are good — but the odd bit of laughter and greed can’t save an album that otherwise seems terrified that next year will be just as bad.

A bad year might be the only thing that links 50 and Kanye, especially since 50 has now told MTV that he intends to keep making solo albums even if Graduation does outsell Curtis. Unlike 50, Kanye has managed to stay off the radar except for the fit he threw at the MTV Europe Music Awards when his video for “Touch the Sky” lost. “If I don’t win, the awards show loses credibility,” he yelped. And just like that, he was no longer the guy who went off-script to announce on national TV that Bush didn’t care about black people. He wasn’t the guy who had done more than anyone since OutKast to blur the line between racially neutral pop and hip-hop (scary and black). He’d become “The Most Arrogant Man in Show Business.” Again.

On Graduation, Kanye lives up to his own ego. Again. His last disc, Late Registration, sprawled: it seemed to introduce a new sound on every track, and the harmonic nuances that popmeister Jon Brion brought to the table had the power to surprise. Graduation is much tighter. Kanye produced it himself, and he settled on a sound that is equal parts warm, electronic fuzz and melodramatic orchestral sweep. Strings are trembling all over the place, and every now and then a brass section will leap out of the background. Kanye has always had a characteristic sound, but this is the first time he’s narrowed it to such a fine point.

The first half slowly works its way through the complexities of his professional success till it reaches a hollow, rotten core at “Drunk and Hot Girls.” Here, Kanye sounds as pathetic as the wasted models he’s fumbling around with. On “Everything I Am,” however, he realizes what he’s almost lost. It opens with “Common passed on this beat,” and even though he tries to talk up his solitude as independence, he comes off as an orphan. There’s a devastating little piano line, a melancholy vocal loop, and poignant, understated scratching by DJ Premier. Kanye starts remembering home-town Chicago, the 600 person who were killed there just last year, and though he wants to protest — “Man, killing’s some wack shit” — he knows he hasn’t earned back the platform: “My 15 seconds up, but I got more to say/‘That’s enough, please, Mr. West, no more today.’ ”

It’s the perfect set-up for what comes next. He builds “The Glory” around Laura Nyro’s “Save the Country,” and as snippets like “Can’t study war no more” open the song, you can hear him singing quietly along, not quite sure of the words. It’s the sound of Kanye remembering how excited he is to be making music — to be back as part of a community that can use him. “The hood love to listen to Jeezy and Weezy/And — oh yeah! — Yeezy!” He brings up comparisons to Biggie and Pac, and he does something I’ve never heard before: “I guess after I live, I wanna be compared to Big/Anyone, Big Pun, Big L, or Notorious.” Humility? Who’d have thought?

Yes, Kanye’s one of hip-hop’s better-looking rappers. And he’s arrogant as hell. But you can imagine he really believes what he raps — a trick 50’s long since forgotten. Graduation is big and generous and redemptive. The real difference between Kanye and 50 is that Kanye’s gone back to the church, whereas 50’s an agnostic. As 50 puts it in “Fire,” “You can hate it but face it/B.I.G. and Tupac just ain’t around.” He’s wrong. And Kanye the believer knows why.

The Britney brand is busted

You know me. I often use this space to chastise the “Hollywood ‘Fo” — Paris, Nicole, Lindsay and Britney — because they really just make it so darn easy for me, like Britney Spears did on Sunday night when she kicked off the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas with a less than stellar comeback performance.

Girlfriend had some serious issues.

First, Spears, who performed her new song “Gimme More,” looked really bad. The TMZleezy fashion police opined that she looked like “an old school hoochie” in that black rhinestoned bra and panties get-up she had on and sadly, I have to agree.

Brit, were there no mirrors in your dressing room? C’mon girl, that outfit was screaming take me off, I only want to be worn by Mary-Kate Olsen!

Also, it was widely apparent that she couldn’t get her lips in sync with the audio track.

Brit, when all else fails, just turn around and shake your booty. Ask Miss Jackson. It works for her every time!

And yes, Spears’ choreography, which used to really rock in a mechanical kind of way, was less than inspired. She kind of looked like a harpooned circus elephant that kept trying to move and groove because the show must go on.

Brit, when your legs feel like lead, just sit down on the edge of the stage and start serenading P.Diddy. He’ll save you every time!

With all of the things that went wrong at the Palms on Sunday night it’s no wonder that Nelly, 50 Cent and Rihanna (when she wasn’t giggling) all had that deer-in-the headlights look in their eyes when the cameras panned the audience.

They were having a true WTF moment.

See how easy that was?

But truthfully, I’m going to take the high road like Alicia Keys did when reporters asked her about Spears’ performance. Keys thinks we should all give “the lovely lady” a break and she’s right.

It’s one thing to rip Spears when she’s stepping out of limos with no panties — like she reportedly did again on Monday — but it’s quite another thing to kick her in the gut when she didn’t and/or couldn’t live up to our performance expectations for whatever reasons.

Imagine if you will what she must have been going through up on that stage. For the past two years her every move has been recorded by the paparazzi, the stalkarazzi and even respectable mainstream news outlets who are just lying in wait ready for Spears to screw up again so she can be today’s news.

With Lindsay in rehab, Paris lying low and Nicole recovering from her 82-minute stint in jail, the media scrutiny is even more intense for Spears.

Then she’s got all that mama drama, baby daddy drama and the girl can’t seem to grasp the fact that undies definitely need to be worn under micro minis.

On top of all of that, her once brilliant career is in the toilet. And everybody in the world knows it.

But when you look closely at her performance on Sunday night, it’s easy to see that the girl was petrified. She’s not only lost sight of herself as a person, but her confidence on stage is gone, too. So, it really makes perfect sense that she would have been nervous playing to a crowd of her peers on national TV.

I’ve never been a Spears fan, which is as it should be since I’m about 30 years past her target demo. But I do know that at the height of her fame the Britney Spears brand was working and working well. She made all the right moves on stage and off — including the real or imagined feuds with her former Mickey Mouse Club co-star Christina Aguilera. Those were not only entertaining, but kept both of them at the top of their game.

But now the brand is busted and Spears doesn’t have anyone around her who can tell her how to fix it. That, too, was apparent on Monday when the Spears camp tried its best to explain what had happened at the VMAs.

Her heel was broken. Hmm. Not buying that, try again.

The eye drops she popped in her eyes to control her allergies just before hitting the stage made her appear dazed and confused. Uh-huh. Isn’t there some kind of pill for that?

She was ticked off that MTV, which was using her to boost ratings for a show that’s as stale as yesterday’s half-eaten doughnut, vetoed the magic act she had worked on all week with Criss Angel because it was “too complicated.” Also, Spears was reportedly unhappy that she was unable to do her vocals live as she had planned.

OK Brit, I might buy both of those explanations if you throw in a 30-day cruise around the Greek Isles.

Truthfully, the less-than-crafty PR spin just made a bad situation worse. Spears should fire her handlers for their horrendous mishandling of her. They should know by now that it’s much easier for folks to buy into just one lie. Once you start getting into multiples you’re just asking for bad press. Publicists should only play that card if their clients have been arrested so they can lay the foundation for reasonable doubt. For something as insignificant as a botched performance, simplicity is key.

She had the flu.

I’m not sure how Spears, 25, can actually recover from this latest screw-up. I suppose it’s easier to bounce back on a personal level when you have millions of dollars at your disposal. You can just bop over to Kitson or some other overpriced trendy boutique and buy some temporary happiness to ease the shame. But even if that works, Harvey Levin and his TMZ crew won’t let you forget.

But professionally, confidence is the one thing you can’t buy. The only way you can get it back is to reach inside yourself, yank it out, tweak it and pray that your fan base is loyal enough to give you another chance.

On stage, Spears deserves an opportunity to fine tune herself. She should just do what she did when she did it well. Word on the street is that Jay-Z might be willing to work with her. She should make that happen.

Off stage, Spears has a lot more work to do. I suggest she start her repair work at Victoria’s Secret.

Device explodes outside Sopranos star's studio

A bizarre incident happened early yesterday in New York when an explosive device detonated outside a studio that is owned by Michael Imperioli, the award-winning actor who played Christopher Moltisanti on HBO's The Sopranos for years. The device damaged a van and it's still unclear if the explosion was related to the studio or Michael Imperioli at all. It's a totally weird story. The Associated Press reports that around 1am yesterday morning, several apartments above the studio were evacuated after the device went off. The bomb squad was investigating the incident near Michael Imperioli's studio, which is only two blocks south of Madison Square Garden. Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City said that the device was some kind of small explosive. That's some expert analysis there.

Bloomberg said, "There was an explosion in the street, it blew out windows of a van parked in front of the building, and thankfully no one was injured. While there certainly is no evidence that this was terrorism, we are taking this and every act of violence extremely seriously."

Michael Imperioli started a studio in New York City called Studio Dante with his wife, Victoria. Studio Dante is described on its web site as "an unexpected jewel-box that was built to house progressive new plays." Michael Imperioli told The New York Daily News, "I don't know anything about this bomb in front of my theater. I'm completely baffled."

The New York Daily News did report that Michael Imperioli was involved in a dispute with a former tenant but that investigators have ruled that had nothing to do with the blast. Imperioli said that he wasn't aware of any conflicts. Joe Brockett, an advertising executive in the area, told the News, "I heard some big explosion and I heard the car alarms in the neighborhood. It was deep; it was not like a little firecracker." Ken Holiday, another local, said, "It shook the house; it knocked some oyster plates off the wall."

Michael Imperioli doesn't actually believe he was the target, noting that there are drunks and druggies in the area late at night. But he's the star of the area, so he spoke to the cops. The Sopranos star told the News, "I told them all I know, which is basically nothing. It's terrible. This whole day felt like an hallucination. It's surreal. ... We have the greatest police force in the world. I'm confident they will come up with something."

The 41-year-old Michael Imperioli starred in The Sopranos for years, appearing in 84 episodes as Christopher Moltisanti. He'll probably always be best-known for the classic HBO show but has also been cast in the upcoming The Lovely Bones, to be directed by Peter Jackson. Michael Imperioli can also be caught on DVD in GoodFellas, Bad Boys, The Basketball Diaries, Clockers, Dead Presidents, Trees Lounge, Last Man Standing, Summer of Sam, Hamlet, My Baby's Daddy, and Shark Tale.

Hollywood star Halle Berry confirmed she and her partner Gabriel Aubry are expecting their first child.

The actress, who is 41-year-old, said she was three months pregnant.

"I've waited a long time for this moment in my life," she said.

Berry is categorical she will not marry the baby's father model Aubry after her two previous marriages - to baseball player David Justice and R&B singer Eric Bent - ended in divorce.
