If you prefer a hatch to a trunk, and want a vehicle that rides just a bit higher—but all those requisite rugged cues on so many crossovers and utility vehicles are turnoffs—the 2013 Toyota Venza might be one of the better vehicles to put on your shortlist.

In lieu of a Camry Wagon, the Venza occupies a middle ground somewhere between the Camry, the mid-size Highlander crossover, the more luxurious Lexus RX, and the somewhat smaller, more rugged-looking RAV4. But opposed to the Highlander or RAV4, the Venza makes absolutely no claim to the off-road trail. And while you can get third-row seating in both the Highlander and the RAV4, the Venza only has two rows of (albeit very comfortable seating)—and its mission is quite different compared to those straightforward utility wagons.
Toyota gives the Venza a mid-cycle refresh of sorts for 2013, but it's mainly one of reshuffled features and options. You'd be challenged to pick up on the design differences between the 2012 and 2013 Venza models—perhaps even at the dealership. Styling changes of the 2013 Venza are limited to some detail changes in front—new grille, new taillight design—and a new 19-inch wheel design. There are also three new colors for the Venza on the outside—Attitude Black, Cypress Pearl, and Cosmic Gray Mica—as well as one new interior shade.

What's under the hood is essentially unchanged. There are four-cylinder and V-6 models, and both are offered with a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The base engine makes 182 horsepower from 2.4 liters, while the V-6 makes 268 hp. The mileage difference isn't all that great between the two, with four-cylinder Venzas rating up to an EPA 21 mpg city, 27 highway (or as low as 18/25 for the V-6 AWD). Both engines get the same available all-wheel drive system, configured for on-road tractability, and on V-6 models there's an available Towing Prep Package (to tow up to 3,500 pounds).

In drives of Venza models from previous model years, we've found these wagons to drive a bit more like a minivan than a sportier wagon or an SUV. You sit higher up, but in terms of ride and handling, the Venza is more carlike than most other alternatives. With soft suspension tuning and rather numb steering, it's by no means exciting to drive—and the huge 20-inch wheels add ride harshness with no handling benefit. Four-cylinder models are perfectly adequate but uninspiring, while V-6 models have a stronger, smoother character that makes it feel more like the Lexus RX 350.

The Venza's interior—and interior accommodations—continue essentially unchanged. And that means is that you get impressive space for five adults and a good amount of cargo space—as well as a near-ideal seating height that makes getting in and out especially easy. The down side, as we've noted in past model years, is that there's a bit too much hard plastic in contact with driver and passenger knees than you might expect in a vehicle that can cost well over $30,000; we're not yet certain how much those have changed in the 2013. Road noise is also an issue on coarser surfaces.

We don't expect the Venza's safety ratings to change significantly in 2013. For 2012, the Venza was an IIHS Top Safety Pick, yet it didn't fare as well in federal tests, with a three-star (out of five) rating in frontal protection.

A much-improved set of connectivity and infotainment features is really the big news for 2013. The Venza is offered in four-cylinder or V-6 form, in base LE, mid-range XLE, and top-lux Limited trims—again with the Limited model V-6-only. But each level adds some other new features for 2013. LE models get new Display Audio systems (comparable to those that made their debut in the 2013 Camry), plus a blind-spot side mirrors, puddle lamps, and outer turn signals. Venza XLE models get a memory power driver's seat, reverse-tilt outside mirrors, and navigation—in addition to Entune multi-media features. And at the top of the line, all Limited models now get LED daytime running lights plus premium 13-speaker JBL sound and an upgraded navigation system.

2013 Acura RDX

The new-generation RDX remains a five-passenger entry-luxe crossover aimed at such rivals as the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Cadillac SRX.

Under its restyled hood is a 3.5-liter V6 that puts out 273 horsepower, a 33 pony climb over the outgoing 2.3-liter turbo four. While the old engine wasn’t noted for its smoothness, the new engine is a version of the veritable V6 that does duty in everything from Honda Accords to Acura TLs. A six-speed automatic transmission with a new lock-up torque converter sends power to either the front or all four wheels.

The front-wheel drive version of the RDX is rated at 20/28 mpg, good enough for a best in-class claim. All-wheel drive models carry a 19/27 mpg rating.

Of course, a new engine isn’t the only news for 2013. Inside and out, the crossover is all-new. As expected, the exterior production RDX differs from the concept in very small details – in fact, the only change we can see is more modest wheels. Otherwise, as with the concept, a longer hood and cleaner angles give the RDX a more finished look than its predecessor, while its side profile is very close to the MDX big brother.

Inside, the luxury level is ratcheted up thanks to additional sound deadening and Active Sound Control, which cancels out ambient noise. The dashboard is more shapely than the somewhat squared-off unit in the outgoing model, while old three-binnacle instrument cluster is replaced by a cleaner setup with large, legible speedometer and tachometer readouts.

New features include Pandora Internet radio, SMS text messaging, a smart key entry system with push-button start and a tri-view rear camera. An optional Technology Package adds navigation and a 60 GB hard drive for audio storage.

The East Liberty, Ohio-built 2013 RDX is set to arrive on dealer lots this spring.

2013 BMW M6 Convertible

The new M6 has received a powerfully taut surfaces and precise contours that further distinguish it from the other 6-Series models. Up front you will immediately recognize the newly designed M kidney grille, which bears an "M6" badge – an homage to the first generation M6. The Convertible’s roof will be made from natural color Carbon Fiber Composite. it comes painted in dark color in order to offer a better contrast with the rest of the body. BMW has opted for this lightweight material in order to lower the car’s center of gravity. The roof can be operated at speeds of up to 25 mph and takes 19 seconds to open and 24 seconds to close again. The heated, vertical glass rear window, which is situated just behind the rear seats, retracts independently of the soft-top itself.

The M6’s interior gets newly developed M sports seats, Merino extended leather upholstery, door sills with "M6" lettering, an M driver’s footrest, exclusive carbon fiber interior trim and the BMW Individual roof liner in Anthracite and an iDrive control system with a 10.2-inch Control Display.

The wheel has been equipped two M Drive buttons which can be used to call up a pre-configured setup for the car. For example, the driver can save a sporty configuration on the "M1" button and a track focused setup (with all driver aids shut off) on the "M2" button. The set-up selected will remain activated until it is either cancelled by pressing the button again or the driver switches to another M Drive setting. Once the system has been switched off – as when the engine is started – it reverts back to a default configuration focusing on efficiency and ride comfort.

For the current generation M6 BMW has dropped the car’s usual V10 engine in favor of a new 4.4 liter V8 engine first used in the M5. The engine is equipped with M TwinPower Turbo Technology and in the M6 the engine delivers a total of 560 HP at 5,750 – 7,000 rpm (versus 555 hp at 6,000 rpm for the previous generation) and a maximum torque of 500 lb-ft tap between 1,500 and 5,750 rpm (versus 500 lb-ft from 1,500 to 5650 rpm). The engine is mated to a a newly developed 7-speed double-clutch transmission designed to handle the high torque and high revving nature of the engine.

With the extra power the engine will sprint the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds, while unfortunately top speed is limited to 155 mph. While the engine’s output has increased by around 10% and maximum torque is up by more than 30%, the new BMW M6 models consume roughly 30% less fuel and have substantially higher range than their predecessors. However, official numbers will be announced at a later date.

The engine has been equipped an Active M Differential that helps the car working with high precision and speed. Its control unit is connected with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system via FlexRay high-speed data transfer technology and constantly cross-checks the data collected by its sensors with the feedback from DSC. It then uses this information to calculate the locking force required to deliver optimum traction and stability. The data recorded by DSC sensors is also passed on if the stability control system is in MDM mode or is switched off. The locking force within the differential can be varied continuously between 0 and 100%. The ABS system retains full functionality in all situations.
