Without doubt the 2009 Mercedes SLR Stirling Moss edition could top that astounding pace, powered by a supercharged V-8 with 650 horsepower, promising a 0-60 time of less than 3.5 seconds. With a top speed of 217 mph, the car is sure to be a wicked ride that requires driver and passenger alike to wear full face helmets, lest they get a 217-mph bug in the face.
This retro racer, which is based on the M-B SLR McLaren Roadster, is fitted with a completely new carbon-fiber body. Inside, it carries the engraved signature of Sir Stirling Moss on a special aluminum plate surrounding the shift lever. Keeping true to the original 300 SLR of the 50s is an electrically adjustable rear aerodynamic spoiler/airbrake, along with two tonneau covers stored in the trunk.

This should give Chevy’s Impala something to think about. We tend to fault the Impala for being a bit of an un-sporty dinosaur, but we won’t be saying that about the new Ford Taurus. On top of looking good in the Detroit spotlights, the new Taurus promises to be nearly as refined as its cousin, the Lincoln MKS, with which it shares a platform. Compared to the current (and somewhat pedestrian) Ford 500-derived Taurus, the new car offers a lower roofline, shorter overhangs, a longer wheelbase, some European flair and a sportier character. Although the chrome wheels are a bit passé, the sharp body creases, strong face and trunk lip spoiler will appeal to enthusiasts. The choice of front- or all-wheel drive remains, as does a standard 3.5-liter V-6 mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission; all versions except the base SE come with steering wheel-mounted shifters. The interior is sufficiently sporty and well laid out—with a twin-cockpit dashboard that mimics the Mustang’s. Of note, the driver’s seat comes equipped with six air bladders for an in-car massage. Look for the new Taurus this summer. And don’t be surprised to see a small-displacement turbocharged EcoBoost engine introduced shortly after the car’s launch.

Ford Mustang Shelby Gt 500

The new 2010 Mustang was just shown at the LA Auto Show. Now, less than 3 months later, here’s the new Shelby GT500 at Detroit. In both coupe and convertible forms! Talk about instant gratification. Every other manufacturer seems to make us wait a year, so this is a nice change. Obviously the styling is new, but that’s not all. Under the direction of new Special Vehicles Team boss Hermann Salenbauch, the GT500 was developed alongside the standard Mustang. Although Ford says the new GT500 is a significant improvement over the previous car, engineers say it won’t dethrone the king—the King of the Road, that is. The team purposely kept the GT500 a tick less aggressive than the hard-edged KR, although much of what was learned while developing the KR was passed on to the GT500. Most notable is the power upgrade to 540 bhp and torque to 510 lb.-ft., thanks to the addition of improved engine knock sensors that allow for better tuning near redline.

What really separates the GT500 from the KR is grip. The special Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires, on forged alloy 19-in. wheels, can’t equal the near-R-compound stickies found on the KR. And if you opt for the convertible you get only 18-in. wheels. Still, Ford says the GT500 has better handling and refinement than the previous model. The snake emblem on the grille has been moved to the passenger side. This allows better airflow to the new cold-air intake on the driver’s. The 2010 Shelby GT500 hits the market in spring.

We had the opportunity to briefly drive the development car in our December issue. It wore a different yellow body then and was known simply as the Dodge EV.
