Godolphin masterful at St Leger

The Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes has been won by outsider Mastery after a thrilling finish. The 14/1 shot held off red hot favourite Kite Wood (9/4F) and Monitor Closely (7/2).The Godolphin one-two saw Saeed bin Suroor's horse hold off the attentions of Frankie Dettori on stablemate Kite Wood.

Dettori was looking for his sixth victory in the Leger and seemed to be heading that way until Ted Durcan and Mastery interrupted proceedings with a late and decisive burst to the front.

The apprentice jockeys who died in Saturday's fire in North Yorkshire have been named as Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson.According to reports, police have arrested a local man in his thirties in connection with the incident at Buckrose Court, a converted hotel in Malton, which was occupied primarily by apprentice jockeys and other stable staff. The man remained in police custody overnight.

Other reports say a friend and fellow apprentice jockey was also on the scene.
Super Star performance from Oxx colt

Sea The Stars once again had no equal as the John Oxx colt made light work of a high class field in the Tattersalls Millions Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown. The 4-6 favourite, a doubt for the race owing to the testing conditions, proved far too good for challenger Fame and Glory who trailed home two and a half lengths second, ahead of Mastercraftsman in third.

A blistering pace was forced by Set Sail and Rockhampton but veteran jockey Mick Kinane ran a..... read more

Delegator romps home at Goodwood

The Totesport.com Celebration Mile at Goodwood has been won by hot favourite Delegator.
The 4/6 winner ridden by Frankie Dettori was followed home by Zacinto at 5/2 and Ordnance Row at 33/1.

The Godolphin horse only needed to raise its game in the final furlongs of the 1m Class 1 contest, steeping up the pace to surge past the other
contenders.

Delegator, second to Sea The Stars and Mastercraftsman recently, has certainly found a fan in Dettori.

O'Brien names five for Leger

Only 11 horses remain in the Ladbrokes St Leger on September 12 and leading Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien is responsible for almost half of them. The Ballydoyle trainer, who has won the Classic three times in the last eight years, has left five in the Doncaster race headed by Age Of Aquarius.

Changingoftheguard, beaten by a head in the Ebor last week, is another likely contender while Johann Zoffany, Von Jawlensky and Rockhampton are likely pacemakers.

John Dunlop is searching for his fourth victory..... read more

Canford Cliffs loss blamed on ground

Canford Cliffs trainer Richard Hannon pointed to the firm ground as the reason his impressive two-year-old was beaten for the first time on Sunday.Despite finishing third by half a length in the Group One Prix Morny at Deauville when sent off at odds-on, Hannon is looking ahead and wants him to get back on the winning trail at Newmarket this autumn.

The impressive youngster veered to the left, an indication that he could have been uncomfortable on the hard ground.

Hannon said: "It..... read more

Stoute toasts Strawberrydaiquiri

The Class One races at Sandown produced contrasting results for the pre-race favourites.
In the Iveco Atalanta Stakes for fillies the heavily backed Strawberrydaiquiri eventually justified its 4/6 price by steaming clear of her rivals in the closing furlong.

Trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Ryan Moore, the horse was collecting her third straight Listed race.

She finished four and a half lengths clear of Ada River (10/1) by the close. Nashmiah came in third at 12/1.

Meanwhile, Shakespearean upset the odds..... read more

Sea The Stars has been declared for Tuesday's Juddmonte International Stakes at York following the dry conditions of the racecourse which suits the 2000 Guineas, Derby and Eclipse Stakes winning hero.Only four other horses have been declared to take on the champion with two of those being apparent pacemakers from Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle stable but Sea The Stars with be in some fine company.
