2009 RM Auctions Year in Review

RM Auctions marked its 30th anniversary in 2009 with a solid year of performance, including more than $190 million in sales with unit volume in excess of 1,450 motor cars, which included 12 separate auctions in four different countries.

As many as 10 collector cars accounted for million-dollar-plus transactions at auction, and RM broke its own world record for the highest price achieved at auction with the sale of the 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa

Bugatti Grand Prix Featured at 2010 Monterey Historics

2010 Vintage Racers Group Racing Schedule

Vintage Racers Group (VRG) released their 2010 vintage car race schedule, with a few calendar moves but no major changes.

VRG returns to Summit Point the first weekend of May for the Jefferson 500 after its successful revival in 2009, in addition to being the only fall event at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

Aston Martin DB4 GT – Car Profile

This 1963 Aston Martin DB4 GT (0175/L) will be offered for sale at RM Auctions’ Automobiles of Arizona auction to be held January 21-22, 2010 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort in Phoenix, Arizona. Its pre-sale estimate is $950,000 – $1,000,000.

The Aston Martin DB4 was unveiled at the 1958 Paris Salon. A totally new car, the introduction of the DB4 was a significant achievement for a small British manufacturer.

Inaugural CTS Auction Results

The inaugural CTS Auctions event was held December 5th, 2009 in Sydney, Australia at their Sydney Harbour Bridge showroom, with a strong catalog of cars and healthy crowd present. 2010 Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique Information

Reno Air Races Results and Photo Gallery

The Reno Air Races, also known as the National Championship Air Races, take place each September at the Reno Stead Airport in Nevada.

Started in 1964, the Reno Air Races feature multi-lap, multi-aircraft races between extremely high performance aircraft on closed ovoid courses which range between about 3 miles (Bi-Planes and Formula One) and about 8 miles (Jet, Unlimited) in length per lap.

Ferrari P540 Superfast Aperta Bespoke

The first shake-down has been held at Fiorano of a very special one-off, the P540 Superfast Aperta, built for an American client. The car, the second in a new Special Projects programme created by Ferrari to meet requests from the most discerning clients and collectors to create truly unique models, is based on the 599 GTB Fiorano and was inspired by a Carrozzeria Fantuzzi-designed Ferrari built specifically for the 1968 Fellini film, Toby Dammit, itself inspired by one of the tales of Edgar Allan Poe.

Strong Competition for 2010 Mille Miglia Ferrari Tribute

There is strong competition to be among the 120 Ferraris built between 1958 and the present that will precede the 360 classic cars during the 2010 Mille Miglia Storica.

The last edition of the famous race was held in 1957 and this is also the cut-off year of manufacture for cars entering the re-run, thus excluding the owners of more modern Ferraris. From next year on, however, they will have their own dedicated event.

2009 Kansas City Auction Results – Mecum

Mecum Auction held its Kansas City Auction on December 4-5, 2009, at Kansas City Convention Center/Bartle Hall, with total gross sales (excluding buyer’s premium) of $6.8 million.

Group C Cars to Race Again at Le Mans in 2010

Porsche 934 Nurburgring Video

The Porsche 934 was a racing version of the Porsche 911 Turbo, prepared to FIA Group 4 rules, similar to the Porsche 935 which was prepared to FIA Group 5 rules.

ATS 2500 GT 3.0 Litre Coupe – Car Profile

ATS, or Automobili Turismo e Sport SpA, was an Italian carmaker and racing team that operated all too briefly between February 1962 and 1965. The nucleus of the new company was comprised of Carlo Chiti and Giotto Bizzarrini, who were both prominently involved in the development of the Ferrari GTO and, as refugees from the infamous Ferrari “Palace Revolt” of 1961, intended to mount a direct challenge to their former employer.

Family Silver – Auto Union Silver Arrows and Rivals on Display

Audi is celebrating 75 years of the Silver Arrows at the Audi Museum with ten Silver Arrows from the supercharged-engine era in one exhibition. From December 2, 2009 until March 31, 2010, visitors to the Audi Forum Ingolstadt will be able to see ten of the magnificent Silver Arrows racing cars from the 1930s, with their supercharged engines. Seven Auto Union Silver Arrows will be joined by three original Mercedes-Benz racing cars, two of them with race victories to their credit, the third a holder of international speed records.

2010 SVRA Vintage Car Racing Schedule

Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) released their 2010 vintage race calendar, which calls for eight events – two fewer than 2009 – with two visits to Road America, in addition to Sebring, Roebling Road, VIR, Mid-Ohio, Watkins Glen and Road Atlanta.

The Palm Beach Vintage Classics (March) and New Jersey Vintage Race (October) were not rescheduled, although SVRA said the New Jersey Vintage Race was removed due to track schedule changes and they hope to have it back on the calendar for 2011.

The recent Saratoga Wine & Food and Fall Ferrari Festival honoring Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team also hosted a discussion among former N.A.R.T. participants, inspired by Bill Warner’s famously animated vintage racing discussions each year at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

Participants included Luigi Chinetti Jr., former team manager Dick Fritz, drivers Denise Mcluggage, Gaston Andrey and Sam Posey, mechanics Francois Sicard and Roger Colson and photographer Tom Burnside. Master of Ceremonies Ed Lucas moderated the discussion.

A Grand Sport Corvette – one of only five ever built by General Motors – is the latest addition to the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Grand Sport joins the collection of over 60 of the most significant sports racing cars ever built.

“The Corvette is really the only sports car that America has produced consistently, and the Grand Sport is the most iconic Corvette racer they ever built,” commented Museum Executive Director Frederick A. Simeone.

Shelby 427 Cobra Prototype Headlines Arizona Sale – RM Auctions

The one-of-a-kind 1964 Shelby Cobra 427 Prototype s/n CSX 2196, nicknamed “The Flip-Top” for its unique clam shell design, is set to cross the block at RM’s Automobiles of Arizona event at the Biltmore Resort and Spa in Phoenix on January 22nd, 2010.

Its design, build, development and racing were spearheaded by legendary racing driver Ken Miles and after months of testing and modifications, 2196 became the only prototype produced for the famed 427 Cobras that followed. It was raced in period at Riverside, Sebring and Nassau.

2010 Wheels of Wellness Charity Event

The 2010 Arizona Auction Week kicks-off on Sunday, January 17th in Phoenix with the prestigious Wheels of Wellness fundraising event, the brainchild of a small group of local vintage car collectors whose lives have been touched by cancer.

Last year’s event showcased an $80 million collection of vintage racecars, including two Ferrari 250 GTOs and a Gulf-Wyer Ford GT40 that won at Monza in 1968.
