The 2010 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance was held Sunday, March 14th on the 10th and 18th fairways of the Golf Club of Amelia Island adjacent to the Ritz-Carlton in Amelia Island, Florida. An estimated 15,000 people attended the event on a breezy and sunny day.

Honorary Chairman Richard Petty kicked off the 15th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance by driving onto the field in the 1971 Plymouth Road Runner that he drove to 21 victories on the NASCAR circuit. In addition to Featured Guest Richard Petty, the featured marque was Mercedes-Benz and the Concours highlighted the 40th anniversary of Porsche’s inaugural victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona and Le Mans by showcasing a number of influential 917s.

Hans Herrmann Returns to Sebring

Porsche scored its first major international overall victory at Sebring’s 12-hour classic in 1960 when Hans Herrmann and Olivier Gendebien drove a Porsche RS60 to victory, finishing nine laps ahead of a Porsche driven by Bob Holbert and Roy Schechter.

Since then, Porsche has built an unsurpassed resume of records at America’s greatest sports car race. The German manufacturer has accumulated 18 overall wins and 65 class victories in six decades of racing at Sebring. Porsche has led 4,198 laps (19,977 miles) at the legendary Florida circuit.

2010 Gooding & Company Amelia Island Auction Results

Gooding & Company held its inaugural Amelia Island Auction event on Friday, March 12, 2010 in Amelia Island, Florida, achieving $16.1 million in total sales and a 82% of lots sold. Gooding’s debut Amelia Island auction featured 71 cars in total, with three cars eclipsing the $1 million barrier and one exceeding $2.5 million.

Top sale of the event went to the 1931 Voisin C20 Mylord Demi-Berline that sold for $2,750,000, followed by the 1961 Porsche RS61 at $1,705,000 and the 1932 Bugatti Type 50 Drop Head Coupe at $1,100,000. The buyer of the RS61 was none other than Sir Stirling Moss, just one one after his accident. Moss reportedly has long sought the RS61 – after driving RS series Porsches in period – and couldn’t let this one pass.

“One of my favorite moments at this auction was watching the incredible 1931 Voisin Mylord Demi-Berline set a world record up on our stage,” says David Gooding, president and founder of Gooding & Company.

2010 Automobiles of Amelia Island Auction Results – RM Auctions

RM Auctions held its 2010 Automobiles of Amelia Island auction on Saturday, March 13th in Amelia Island, Florida, posting in excess of $19 million in total sales with a strong 88% sell-through rate.

Returning to the prestigious Ritz-Carlton Hotel, the single-day sale saw 112 cars cross the block before a packed house, with four cars breaking the million dollar mark and 15 lots exceeding their pre-sale estimates. The sale once again acted as a prelude to the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

Ferrari 250 GT Wins at Cavallino Classic Concorso d’Eleganza

The Ferrari 250 GT Coupé Pinin Farina chassis no. 0419GT, built in 1955 and completely restored by Maranello’s Ferrari Classiche department, was awarded another international recognition. After the award for ‘Best Restoration’ at Villa d’Este last year, the car, part of the Americans Kenneth and Dayle Roath’s collection, gained the “Outstanding Restoration Quality and Challenge” Excellence Cup at the recent Cavallino Classic Concorso d’Eleganza in Florida.

The car, handed over to Ecurie Francorchamps in 1956, was presented at the 39th Salon d’Auto in Brussels in January of the same year, participating afterwards in numerous competitions.

Riverside Museum Establishes Peter Bryant Award

Riverside International Automotive Museum (RIAM) established an annual award which honors the memory of the late motorsports engineer/designer Peter Bryant. The inaugural presentation of the award will take place during “Legends of Riverside II” racing film festival and gala at the museum over the weekend of March 26-28, 2010.

“Peter was such a wonderful part of our inaugural gathering last year, we really wanted to keep his name associated with the event, so we’ve established an award that celebrates the kind of engineering excellence and enthusiasm that Peter represented,” said museum director Bruce Ward.

Bonhams Oxford Automobile Auction Results

Bonhams held its Collectors’ Motor Car and Automobilia sale in Oxford on March 6, 2010, fetching a grand total of £1,017,317 and an 86% sale rate with 44 out of 51 car lots selling.

James Knight, Head of the Motoring department at Bonhams, comments, “This was our second sale at Oxford, and yet again delivered a very strong performance. The test for any new venue is looking at how you perform the second time. I am thrilled that Bonhams and this fabulous venue passed the test with flying colours.”

Favorite Amelia Island Concours Etceterini Winner

The votes are in for your favorite car competing in the Etceterini Class at the 2010 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. The winner is the 1957 Bandini Saponetta owned by Marc Richelsoph.

“Saponetta” means little soap bar, for being small and slippery. The unique patented oval tubing, lightweight engine, and aluminum body form one of the lightest race cars built in its day.

Built in 1957, this particular car was raced in Italy by Ilario Bandini before being imported into the U.S. in 1959. It was then raced extensively at locations such as Watkins Glen during the 60’s. It is one of nine known to exist and one of the few with its original hand hammered aluminum body and original twin cam engine.

Fifteen Year Old at 1970 Watkins Glen Six Hours and Can-Am

Any race weekend at Watkins Glen is a great event but for me, the July 1970 Six Hours and Can-Am at Watkins Glen holds special meaning. At the ripe old age of 15, armed with a Minolta SRT-101 camera and a pair of lenses I was already a “veteran” race fan, having been to Lime Rock for two events, an SCCA regional and the 1970 Trans-Am. This was my first trip to the Glen and it was quite an exciting time for me.

Arriving at the track early Friday morning after driving up with my brother and his buddy in a 1968 Ford Cortina from Northern New Jersey, I was ready! We drove to the loop where the view was excellent. This was the last year of the original configuration of the Watkins Glen track; you could stand within 25 feet of the race cars at this location.

Rowe, Maher and Hearsey at AFAS Amelia Island Concours

Barry Rowe depicted the talented, yet mysterious winner of the inaugural Monaco Grand Prix in his feature painting.

2010 Race Retro Information

This year’s Race Retro, held at Stoneleigh Park from 12th to 14th March, 2010, is serving up a hearty feast of cars for lovers of historic motor sport, giving enthusiasts to get up close to cars they usually only get a passing glimpse of on rally stages or race circuits.

Pushing the boundaries of historic motor sport is Dennis Welch Motorsport with its record-breaking Austin-Healey 100, which late last year, at industry test track Millbrook, took numerous British and International speed records. Stirling Moss Accident

Racing great Sir Stirling Moss OBE is recovering in a hospital after a freak accident in his London home. While the injuries are reportedly not life-threatening, Moss broke both ankles and four bones in his feet in the fall, as well as damage to some vertebrae.

The accident happened as a result of an elevator malfunction in their home. The elevator doors opened on the third floor when the lift was waiting at the fourth floor. Sir Stirling stepped through the doors on the third floor and dropped three stories down the lift shaft to the concrete base.

Derek Bell Named Sebring 12 Hours Grand Marshal

Endurance racing legend Derek Bell has been named Grand Marshal for the 58th running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

A five-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Bell also won the two World Sports Car Championships. He ranks third on Sebring’s all-time podium finishes list with four second-place and two-third place finishes. He was elected to the Sebring Sports Car Racing Hall of Fame in 2008.

Sandown Park Auction Results – Barons

Barons made a strong start to 2010 at Sandown Park on February 9th, with a hall packed with prospective buyers and 70% of the lots finding new homes.

The two headline cars both found new homes, as the magnificent Le Mans-specification 1956 Austin-Healey 100/4 sold for £43,600, while the 1958 Jaguar XK150 drophead coupé achieved £40,250.

2010 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este Information

Bill Warner and the crew at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance continually produce a very entertaining and diverse collection of cars and those assembled for the 15th annual event will surely wow the spectators once again. Among the unique featured classes at the 2010 Amelia Island Concours will be Porsche 917, Cars of the Cuban Races, Cars You Never Knew Existed, Forgotten Fiberglass and Class E – Etceterini.

For those unfamiliar with the nickname Etceterini, it typically encompasses small displacement sports and racing cars that were built in the ’40s through the ’60s by a variety of Italian makers. Examples include such names as Bandini, Moretti, Giaur, Siata and Stanguellini, among many others.

VSCC Pomeroy Trophy Report and Photo Gallery

Silverstone in February can only be the Vintage Sports Car Club (VSCC) Pomeroy Trophy season opener, held by the club for over 50 years. The idea to find the best all round GT car for the road was originally suggested in 1947 by John Rowley, but because of the petrol rationing, the event didn’t take off until 1952. The only requirements are that the vehicle must be road legal and have a minimum capacity of 2 litres or 1485cc if supercharged or turbocharged.

To make this a fair competition, and not just for the fastest car, the VSCC decided to use Laurence Pomeroy’s formula which was originally used to calculate the efficiency of Grand Prix engines.

H&H Pavilion Gardens Auction Results

H&H Auction held its first auction of 2010 on February 16-17 at the Pavilion Gardens, Buxton, Derbyshire, with the top sale going to a Porsche RS 2.7 Lightweight.

The 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight, one of the 17 original right hand drive Lightweights, was a successful international rally car early in its life, while being reconfigured for road use later in its life.

Ferrari – Origin of F1 Chassis Numbers

Ferrari team driver Felipe Massa recently debuted the 2010 Ferrari Formula One race car, known as Ferrari F10 chassis number 282, at the Jerez de la Frontera circuit in Spain. While Ferrari’s latest F1 racer is the ultimate in modern design, it is connected to every Ferrari F1 car since the 312 B in 1970.

Formula One teams typically identify the chassis with a progressive number for each single-seater model’s chassis on the track during the season, starting with a new series the following year. For example, McLaren’s 2010 F1 car is named MP4/25, chassis number 1, 2 and 3, while their 2009 F1 car was named MP4/24, chassis number 1, 2, 3, etc.

2010 Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance Information

Big Changes for Concours d’Elegance at Meadow Brook

The event previously known as the Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance will now be using its legally recognized name, Concours d’Elegance of America, beginning with the 2010 event scheduled for July 25 at the Meadow Brook estate.

Founded in 1977, the Concours was originally operated by the Meadow Brook Hall and has been held on the grounds of the Meadow Brook estate, located on the campus of Oakland University in Rochester Hills, Michigan since its inception.

BMW 328 Mille Miglia Büegelfalte Offered at RM Monaco Sale

A 1937 BMW 328 Mille Miglia ‘Büegelfalte’, chassis no. 85032, will make its auction debut at RM’s inaugural Sporting Classics of Monaco sale on 1st May, 2010 at the Grimaldi Forum. This very significant pre-war sports racing car brings factory Le Mans and Mille Miglia experience, in addition to its unique open ‘Büegelfalte’ streamliner body. Its pre-sale estimate is unavailable.

“Our Monaco sale will feature some truly outstanding historic cars, but the totally unique nature of this BMW and its fascinating history make it an exceptional opportunity for any collector of significant motor cars”, says Max Girardo, managing director of RM Europe.

Porsche Video – Roots in Racing. Not Posing.

Porsche has been successful in many branches of motorsports, scoring tens of thousands of victories worldwide over the course of five decades of competition. From victories in the Carrera Panamericana and Targa Florio to Daytona and Le Mans, Porsche is the most successful sports car racing manufacturer in the world.

Given their recent foray in SUVs and 4-door sedans (or perhaps as a reminder to themselves), Porsche created a nicely-done video to reiterate that the company has, “Roots in Racing. Not Posing.” While they do not need to explain their past to motorsports fans, we appreciate the reminder nonetheless. The short 1:35 video includes an illustrious cast of characters, including the 550, 917/10, 936 and many variations of the 911.

Ferrari Monoposto Corsa Indianapolis – Car Profile

Ferrari Classiche recently completed the restoration of the Corsa Indianapolis single-seater (chassis 0388), a one-off built in 1953. The Ferrari Monoposto Corsa Indianapolis – the original name in the original Certificate – was developed as a prototype for the 1953 Indianapolis 500, but didn’t participate in the actual race although it was used in several other competitions in the 1950s.

The Monoposto Corsa Indianapolis project’s specific nature was based on several elements, in particular the restoration activities and the historical research by the Ferrari Classiche department’s technicians and to documents from the Ferrari archives.
