After three days of competition, nearly 115 of the 140 post-1957 Ferraris entered crossed the finish line in Brescia on the night of Saturday, May 20th.

The original Mille Miglia race was last held in 1957 and this is also the cut-off year of manufacture for cars entering the contemporary race, thus excluding owners of more modern Ferraris from 1958 and beyond. Beginning with the inaugural Tribute in 2010, however, post-1957 Ferraris have their own dedicated event, the Ferrari Tribute to Mille Miglia.

The exhibition covers an [...] The Ferrari Myth exhibition opened May 18th, 2012 at the Italian Center in the Shanghai Expo Park, offering visitors the chance to learn about the marque’s past, present and future. The inauguration ceremony was attended by the company’s Deputy Chairman Piero Ferrari, and representatives of both the Chinese and Italian governments.

The exhibition covers an area of 900 square meters and will be open to the public for three years. Its aim is to introduce the Chinese people to Ferrari and allow them to experience at first-hand to the history, cars, technologies and passion of the Prancing Horse, thereby further consolidating the already strong links between the Italian marque and this nation.

Scuderia Ferrari made its debut in the Formula 1 World Championship on May 21st, 1950, on the very same circuit that winds its way through the Principality of Monaco and which this coming Sunday, hosts the sixth round of the 2012 World Championship.

There were four Ferraris entered in the 1950 Monaco Grand Prix: two 125 F1s, in the GP49 evolution, entrusted to the Italians Alberto Ascari and Luigi Villoresi and two 125 F1s for France’s Raymond Sommer and the British driver Paul Whitehead.

La Mille Miglia, or the 1000 Miles, has become an Italian institution on the classic car calendar. Originally a full-on, flat-out race starting in Brescia and heading down to Rome and back in one go, the Mille Miglia was started in 1927 and ended after 24 editions in 1957 when the race was outlawed from being too dangerous after several fatalities. Even though the entire route was closed off, the roads aren’t what they are today and Sir Stirling Moss set the fastest lap in 1955 reaching the finish after 10 hours 7 minutes and 48 seconds with a staggering average speed of 98.53mph.

RM Auctions announced more featured offerings for the August 17–18, 2012 Monterey sale, a 1955 Ferrari 410 Sport Berlinetta and a 1938 Talbot-Lago T23 Teardrop Coupe. The 410 S, chassis 0594 CM, is the only example built with a closed body, while the Talbot-Lago, chassis 93064, is the sole Jeancart-style Teardrop originally built upon a four-liter T23 chassis.

The Ferrari and Talbot-Lago join 120 automobiles slated for the 2012 Monterey Auction, including the previously announced Pebble Beach ‘Best of Show’ winning 1938 Horch 853A Erdmann and Rossi Sport Cabriolet.

Monaco and Grand Prix: Two names that have been combined since 1929 when Monte Carlo held the first Grand Prix. Since then this famous track has never missed a single year on the calendar. In 1997 the first Historic Grand Prix was held to honour its legends from the past. Now traditionally held biennially two weeks before the current Formula One stars hit the track, the racing is divided into seven grids containing an average of over 30 cars!

After a long illness, Carroll Hall Shelby died on May 10, 2012, at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. He is survived by two sons, Michael and Patrick, his daughter Sharon, a number of grandchildren, a sister Anne, his wife Cleo plus a host of admirers. For a reason that always remained between the two of us, I am eternally in his debt. As I write this, tears are in my eyes.

On January 11, 2012, Carroll Shelby turned 89 years old. He was married a number of times. His first was Jeanne Fields with whom he had the three children. They were married in 1943 and divorced early in 1960. In September of that year, he married actress Jan Harrison, but this one only lasted a few months. In 1997, his fourth wife, Lena Dahl, was killed in a car accident. Afterwards, he said that he was never going to get married again. Nevertheless, four month later, he married Cleo, an English woman considerably his junior. It’s an interesting note regarding his personality that he maintained good relations with all his exes.
