Favorite Amelia Island Concours Etceterini Winner

The votes are in for your favorite car competing in the Etceterini Class at the 2010 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. The winner is the 1957 Bandini Saponetta owned by Marc Richelsoph.

“Saponetta” means little soap bar, for being small and slippery. The unique patented oval tubing, lightweight engine, and aluminum body form one of the lightest race cars built in its day.

Built in 1957, this particular car was raced in Italy by Ilario Bandini before being imported into the U.S. in 1959. It was then raced extensively at locations such as Watkins Glen during the 60’s. It is one of nine known to exist and one of the few with its original hand hammered aluminum body and original twin cam engine.

Fifteen Year Old at 1970 Watkins Glen Six Hours and Can-Am

Any race weekend at Watkins Glen is a great event but for me, the July 1970 Six Hours and Can-Am at Watkins Glen holds special meaning. At the ripe old age of 15, armed with a Minolta SRT-101 camera and a pair of lenses I was already a “veteran” race fan, having been to Lime Rock for two events, an SCCA regional and the 1970 Trans-Am. This was my first trip to the Glen and it was quite an exciting time for me.

Arriving at the track early Friday morning after driving up with my brother and his buddy in a 1968 Ford Cortina from Northern New Jersey, I was ready! We drove to the loop where the view was excellent. This was the last year of the original configuration of the Watkins Glen track; you could stand within 25 feet of the race cars at this location.

Rowe, Maher and Hearsey at AFAS Amelia Island Concours

Paintings from Barry Rowe, Charles Maher and Peter Hearsey of the Automotive Fine Arts Society (AFAS) will be featured during the 2010 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance on March 11-14, 2010, in Amelia Island, Florida. The paintings will be part of the 15th annual AFAS Amelia Island Concours art show sponsored by Mazda North America.

Barry Rowe depicted the talented, yet mysterious winner of the inaugural Monaco Grand Prix in his feature painting.

2010 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Preview

2010 Race Retro Information

This year’s Race Retro, held at Stoneleigh Park from 12th to 14th March, 2010, is serving up a hearty feast of cars for lovers of historic motor sport, giving enthusiasts to get up close to cars they usually only get a passing glimpse of on rally stages or race circuits.

Pushing the boundaries of historic motor sport is Dennis Welch Motorsport with its record-breaking Austin-Healey 100, which late last year, at industry test track Millbrook, took numerous British and International speed records. The car achieved a top speed of 152mph, up on the works car record set in 1954. (See Austin-Healey Speed Record Photo Gallery).

Stirling Moss Accident

Racing great Sir Stirling Moss OBE is recovering in a hospital after a freak accident in his London home. While the injuries are reportedly not life-threatening, Moss broke both ankles and four bones in his feet in the fall, as well as damage to some vertebrae.

The accident happened as a result of an elevator malfunction in their home. The elevator doors opened on the third floor when the lift was waiting at the fourth floor. Sir Stirling stepped through the doors on the third floor and dropped three stories down the lift shaft to the concrete base.

2010 Gooding & Company Amelia Island Auction Preview

Gooding & Company will hold its inaugural Amelia Island Auction event on Friday, March 12th on the grounds of the Amelia Island Plantation in Florida. Gooding becomes the second auction to be held during the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance weekend, joining RM Auctions’ Automobiles of Amelia Island sale.

Derek Bell Named Sebring 12 Hours Grand Marshal

Endurance racing legend Derek Bell has been named Grand Marshal for the 58th running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

A five-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Bell also won the two World Sports Car Championships. He ranks third on Sebring’s all-time podium finishes list with four second-place and two-third place finishes. He was elected to the Sebring Sports Car Racing Hall of Fame in 2008.

Sandown Park Auction Results – Barons

Barons made a strong start to 2010 at Sandown Park on February 9th, with a hall packed with prospective buyers and 70% of the lots finding new homes.

The two headline cars both found new homes, as the magnificent Le Mans-specification 1956 Austin-Healey 100/4 sold for £43,600, while the 1958 Jaguar XK150 drophead coupé achieved £40,250.

2010 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este Information

For anyone with a fondness for spring and an appreciation of the Italian way of life, Lake Como in April has always been hard to beat. And the world-famous Grand Hotel Villa d’Este is the perfect base for those looking to revel in the lakeside ambience rather than merely bed down for the night. Should the same people also share a love of fine cars, the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este will deliver the perfect weekend. Vote for Favorite Amelia Island Concours Etceterini

Bill Warner and the crew at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance continually produce a very entertaining and diverse collection of cars and those assembled for the 15th annual event will surely wow the spectators once again. Among the unique featured classes at the 2010 Amelia Island Concours will be Porsche 917, Cars of the Cuban Races, Cars You Never Knew Existed, Forgotten Fiberglass and Class E – Etceterini.

For those unfamiliar with the nickname Etceterini, it typically encompasses small displacement sports and racing cars that were built in the ’40s through the ’60s by a variety of Italian makers. Examples include such names as Bandini, Moretti, Giaur, Siata and Stanguellini, among many others.

2010 Automobiles of Amelia Island Auction Preview – RM Auctions

RM Auctions will hold its 2010 Automobiles of Amelia Island auction on Saturday, March 13th in Amelia Island, Florida. Held in partnership with the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, RM Auctions’ 12th annual auction will once again be staged on the grounds of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

VSCC Pomeroy Trophy Report and Photo Gallery

Silverstone in February can only be the Vintage Sports Car Club (VSCC) Pomeroy Trophy season opener, held by the club for over 50 years. The idea to find the best all round GT car for the road was originally suggested in 1947 by John Rowley, but because of the petrol rationing, the event didn’t take off until 1952. The only requirements are that the vehicle must be road legal and have a minimum capacity of 2 litres or 1485cc if supercharged or turbocharged.

To make this a fair competition, and not just for the fastest car, the VSCC decided to use Laurence Pomeroy’s formula which was originally used to calculate the efficiency of Grand Prix engines.

H&H Pavilion Gardens Auction Results

H&H Auction held its first auction of 2010 on February 16-17 at the Pavilion Gardens, Buxton, Derbyshire, with the top sale going to a Porsche RS 2.7 Lightweight.

The 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight, one of the 17 original right hand drive Lightweights, was a successful international rally car early in its life, while being reconfigured for road use later in its life.

Ferrari – Origin of F1 Chassis Numbers

Ferrari team driver Felipe Massa recently debuted the 2010 Ferrari Formula One race car, known as Ferrari F10 chassis number 282, at the Jerez de la Frontera circuit in Spain. While Ferrari’s latest F1 racer is the ultimate in modern design, it is connected to every Ferrari F1 car since the 312 B in 1970.

Formula One teams typically identify the chassis with a progressive number for each single-seater model’s chassis on the track during the season, starting with a new series the following year. For example, McLaren’s 2010 F1 car is named MP4/25, chassis number 1, 2 and 3, while their 2009 F1 car was named MP4/24, chassis number 1, 2, 3, etc.

2010 Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance Information

The 2010 Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance selected Martin Swig as the Honorary Chair of the event. A long-time supporter of the Palo Alto Concours, Swig annually sponsors the “Forgotten Treasures” and “Mille Miglia” trophies awarded to esoteric vehicles participating in the Concours.

“It’s great to be able to recognize Martin’s contributions to our event in this way”, says Hal Schuette, Palo Alto Concours Executive Director. “He’s one of California’s true motoring enthusiasts, and has added to our success through his efforts.”

Big Changes for Concours d’Elegance at Meadow Brook

The event previously known as the Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance will now be using its legally recognized name, Concours d’Elegance of America, beginning with the 2010 event scheduled for July 25 at the Meadow Brook estate.

Founded in 1977, the Concours was originally operated by the Meadow Brook Hall and has been held on the grounds of the Meadow Brook estate, located on the campus of Oakland University in Rochester Hills, Michigan since its inception.

BMW 328 Mille Miglia Büegelfalte Offered at RM Monaco Sale

A 1937 BMW 328 Mille Miglia ‘Büegelfalte’, chassis no. 85032, will make its auction debut at RM’s inaugural Sporting Classics of Monaco sale on 1st May, 2010 at the Grimaldi Forum. This very significant pre-war sports racing car brings factory Le Mans and Mille Miglia experience, in addition to its unique open ‘Büegelfalte’ streamliner body. Its pre-sale estimate is unavailable.

“Our Monaco sale will feature some truly outstanding historic cars, but the totally unique nature of this BMW and its fascinating history make it an exceptional opportunity for any collector of significant motor cars”, says Max Girardo, managing director of RM Europe.

Porsche Video – Roots in Racing. Not Posing.

Porsche has been successful in many branches of motorsports, scoring tens of thousands of victories worldwide over the course of five decades of competition. From victories in the Carrera Panamericana and Targa Florio to Daytona and Le Mans, Porsche is the most successful sports car racing manufacturer in the world.

Given their recent foray in SUVs and 4-door sedans (or perhaps as a reminder to themselves), Porsche created a nicely-done video to reiterate that the company has, “Roots in Racing. Not Posing.” While they do not need to explain their past to motorsports fans, we appreciate the reminder nonetheless. The short 1:35 video includes an illustrious cast of characters, including the 550, 917/10, 936 and many variations of the 911.

Ferrari Monoposto Corsa Indianapolis – Car Profile

Ferrari Classiche recently completed the restoration of the Corsa Indianapolis single-seater (chassis 0388), a one-off built in 1953. The Ferrari Monoposto Corsa Indianapolis – the original name in the original Certificate – was developed as a prototype for the 1953 Indianapolis 500, but didn’t participate in the actual race although it was used in several other competitions in the 1950s.

The Monoposto Corsa Indianapolis project’s specific nature was based on several elements, in particular the restoration activities and the historical research by the Ferrari Classiche department’s technicians and to documents from the Ferrari archives. Bonhams Oxford Automobile Auction Consignments

A collection of quality motor cars, spanning every decade, starting with a 1910 Hupmobile Model 20 Tourer (estimate £10,000 – 12,000), and going through to a 2005 Ferrari/Foreman Mk4 V12 Spyder Recreation (estimate £65,000 – 85,000) are being offered at the Collectors’ Motor Cars and Automobilia sale in Oxford on 6th March 2010.

Last year’s March sale of the same name was the first at Bonhams’ new Oxford salesroom, a 20,000 sq ft space considered one of the biggest single auction sites in Europe, and it achieved a total of £968,493, with over 98% of cars sold.

2010 Concorso Italiano to Feature 100 Years of Alfa Romeo

Alfa Romeo Automobiles S.p.A. was founded on June 24, 1910 in Milan, Italy and the famed Italian car maker’s 100th anniversary will be celebrated at the 2010 Concorso Italiano.

Concorso Italiano plans to honor the marque in a variety of ways, headlined by the Centerpiece Display, a wide-ranging exhibit of Alfa Romeos from early street and racing cars to modern cars.

Goodwood Breakfast Club Sets Dates for 2010

Jaguar Celebrates 75 Years with Le Mans Return – Photo Gallery

Seventy five years ago Sir William Lyons entered the realm of automobile manufacturing from humble beginnings in the English mid lands as a motorcycle side-car constructor known as Swallow. When it came to the launch of the all-new SS 100 in 1935, Sir William wanted a new and evocative name for his company. After asking his advertising agency for suggestions, Sir William chose ‘Jaguar’, and the SS 100 model became the world’s first Jaguar.

The years spanning 1941-1945 were consumed by World War 2, but Lyons was anxious to return to building cars once hostilities came to an end.

Best of Britain Exhibition at Simeone Museum

Over thirty rare, unusual and beautiful sports and racing cars manufactured in England will be on display at the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum from February 20th through March 14th, 2010. Titled the “Best of Britain,” the show is comprised of cars from individual collectors in the mid-Atlantic states and is intended to illustrate why the adjective “British” is inseparable from the term “sports car.”

Cars in the show include a 1935 Triumph Gloria Southern Cross that was once part of the Henry Ford Museum, a 1960 MGA Twin Cam Coupe that raced at Sebring, and a 1966 Aston Martin DB6, one of the most potent sports cars of its era.

Dan Gurney Featured at Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion enters a new dawn of historic racing by honoring one of the true legends of motorsports – Dan Gurney – the Cars He Built, the Cars He Drove – August 12-15 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

SVRA and HSR announced a restructuring in which ownership and management of SVRA and HSR have been revised so that each of these sanctioning bodies will be managed independently to better build on their separate formats and unique histories.

Both organizations began operation in the late 1970’s and evolved developing uniquely different focuses in the vintage/historic racing arena. SVRA, with Carl Jensen as Director of Competition, will concentrate on its long standing focus on the Classic eras including the 1950’s -1970’s and special features (which allow for Indy Lights etc.) with a very strong emphasis on period correctness.

HSR, along with Ken Fengler as Vice President of Race Operations, will continue to include a broader spectrum, with sports cars from the 1950’s and thereafter, but with heavier emphasis on the later eras of the 1980’s–early 2000’s, including Historic Stock Cars, GTP/WSC and the early Daytona Prototypes. Over the many years of evolution, the two organizations have always been different and being combined was clouding their unique identities.

Goodwood Revival to Limit Visitors in 2010

Last year the annual Goodwood Revival achieved an all-time record attendance with more than 132,000 historic motor racing enthusiasts descending on the celebrated West Sussex motor circuit to enjoy three days of the world’s finest wheel-to-wheel racing, period fashions and entertainment. For 2009 Revival tickets sold out earlier than they had ever done before.

Despite this year’s Goodwood Revival still being seven months away (from 17-19 September), early sales of advanced tickets to the 2010 event are matching the highest level ever year-on-year in 13 years of the meeting.

Ferrari Classiche Restoration Facility – Photo Gallery

Ferrari Classiche was established to provide restoration and maintenance services, technical assistance and Certificates of Authenticity to owners of classic Ferraris. Housed in the former Ferrari Foundry building within Ferrari’s Maranello, Italy factory, the 10,225 square foot Classiche offices and workshop were officially opened by Ferrari President, Luca di Montezemolo, in July 2006.

Sports Car Digest toured the Ferrari Classiche facility and came away impressed by the services offered to Ferrari clients. During our visit, a wide range of street and racing Ferraris were being restored or serviced, including a 250 GT Lusso, 250 Tour de France, 250 GT SWB, 250 GT California Spyder, 365 GT4 BB and Monoposto Corsa Indianapolis race car.
