I haven't really followed the NBA for about 13 years and don't recall ever hearing anything about NBA Hall of Fame induction ceremonies even when I did follow it. But I would have thought for sure that DJ was in there. It's simply ridiculous that he isn't.

Back in college I had the random luck to work at the video store in Lexington (Movies & More, on Mass Ave, I think) that DJ frequented. By no means did he know me, but I became a familiar face to him after multiple meetings at the checkout counter. One day before work I was grabbing some food at a convenience store down the street from
M&M. There was a decent crowd of people in a relatively small space, including DJ. Everyone knew it was him, but everyone also gave him his space and played it cool. On his way out he saw me coming in, recognized me as the kid who checks out his videos, and gave me that little 'hey' nod of recognition people give each other. I'm probably over estimating the degree to which other folks in the store noticed that nod. But I prefer to recall two things from that random moment: (1) DJ was just a regular guy, not above just saying hello to people (I've seen and met other sports figures through other miscellaneous jobs I had in and right after college. Being chill and down to earth wasn't necessarily a common trait among them.), and (2) Everyone else in the convenience store must have been wondering 'who the hell is that clown and why does DJ know him?'.

Funny & Opportunistic Idea: Lilly's Cafe Serving Humble Pie

Image Source: Lilly's Cafe & French Bakery

Just saw a clip on ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown about a woman who has starting offering 'Humble Pie' at her bakery, inspired by the New England Patriots catchphrase of the season.

Smart, inspired entrepreneurial idea. And it's good to see him putting the troubles of 2006 behind him.

The man just has style and seems like he would be good people to hang out with.

e.g., if baseball didn't work out this year, he was planning to "tour the country in an RV". The same USA Today story where I learned that nugget also included this quote:

"I was going to start in California, go up the coast and watch my sister (Deann, who plays first base) play softball at Oregon State," he says. "Then I was going to Washington, cut across to Idaho and Montana and see the buffalo roam."

Genius.

I wish I could find the image that flashed on SportsCenter the other night, where DY had some crazy shades on. But no dice. But I did realize that for some strange reason there seem to be more images when you search Photobucket and Flickr directly than when you do an image search on Google.

I miss Trot Nixon

Image Source:Boston Dirt Dogs, via Edward O'Connor

It's still early, but this move isn't quite working out in the Sox' favor just yet:

Stats are YTD thru 5/24/07, courtesy of CBSSportsLine:

Player

AB

R

H

2B

3B

HR

RBI

AVG.

OBP.

SLG.

Salary

Nixon

127

19

37

8

0

2

20

.291

.374

.402

$3MM

Drew

135

21

32

5

1

2

13

.237

.346

.333

$14MM

Ugh.

Originally posted 5/25/07

Lunch with Lou Piniella

 0628070001.jpg
Originally uploaded by sindlinger
Courtesy of The Tribune Co., I got to attend a relatively small [~35 people] lunch at Harry Caray's with Lou Piniella this week. And if you've seen him on TV in the manager's uni, you know that's not a real flattering look.

Made me pretty glad I don't have to wear a baseball uniform on a daily basis, because I'm pretty sure Lou looked a lot better in a suit than I do, which means I'd probably look like a ridiculous jackass in a baseball uniform these days.
SB XLI Photos Are Up

sbxli-nfltailgate-fishcakes-with-dude, originally uploaded by sindlinger.

Just posted our SBXLI pictures on Flickr. This one, for example, is from the NFL Tailgate prior to the game. I was just trying to get a picture of the "Fish Cake Sandwich" sign, [provided by the Hot Dog Cart, of course], when this cat jumped into the frame. Kind of like how it turned out anyway.

Trip was great overall. Rain was a bit of a buzzkill, since we had tremendous seats [14 rows back on the 35 yd line, behind the Bears bench]. But stil, the folks at SI.com put on a first class weekend.

Originally posted 2/10/07

Jim Ed Rice - "Slugger and a Hitter"

Overall solid articlefrom Nick Cafardo in the Globe.

Including this nice nugget, courtesy of the Rem Dog:

"What Remy likes to point out is Rice was not only a slugger, he was a hitter.
