The 2012 Algarve Cup in Portugal

The Algarve Cup is an annual tournament held in Portugal that invites the best women's national teams in the world.

The 2012 Algarve Cup is the nineteenth edition of the tournament and will take place between February 29 -March 7.

Twelve teams have confirmed their participation and have been split into three groups and will be played in a round-robin schedule.

RULES:

Groups A and B, containing the strongest ranked teams, are the only ones in contention to win the title. The group winners from A and B will contest the final, with the runners-up playing for third place and those that finished third in these two groups playing for fifth place.
The teams in Group C are playing for places 7–12, with the winner of Group C playing the team that finishes fourth in Group A or B with the better record for seventh place and the Group C runner-up playing the team which came last in Group A or B with the worse record for ninth place. The third and fourth-placed teams in Group C play for eleventh place.
Points awarded in the group stage follow the standard formula of three points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a loss. In the case of two teams being tied on the same amount of points in a group, their head-to-head result determined the higher place. (©Wikipedia)

USWNT Prepares for New Zealand

On the heels of their emphatic dominance in the just concluded CONCACAF Olympic qualifiers, the USWNT will face New Zealand in a international friendly to be held on the 11th of February, this Saturday.

The Americans are undefeated in Texas having a record of 8-zip having last played there in 2007. The week long training camp and the game serves as a warm-up to the Algarve Cup in Portugal.

The tournament will be held between 29th Feb. to the 7th March and the USWNT will leave for Europe 10 days after the friendly.

New Zealand's record against the USWNT stands at 7-1-0 but at the World Cup held last year they enjoyed their best run ever, even though they exited in the 1st round. The Kiwis lost by 2-1 scores to both Japan and England but tied Mexico 2-2 by scoring two goals in the dying minutes to earn their first Women’s World Cup point.

They are now the favourites to qualify for the Olympics from Oceania's one berth to the games. The game will be played at the FC Dallas Stadium will kick of at 3pm CT / 9pm GMT.

Olympic Soccer or X-Games?

For those of us who follow women's soccer with fervor, would know that I am a tad late on this post but for those who only look at the beautiful sport when the world cup rolls around then I'm on time. For the past nine days the 2012 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament having been taking place in Vancouver, Canada.

All the match were broadcast live on CONCACAF TV for free, provided you join the site. A small price to pay if you love watching the sport and doubly so if you enjoy it more that its women in 'cute shorts'.

The Tournament started with eight teams in two groups. On the 27th January 2012 the semi-finals were held between the USA and Costa Rica and then Canada and Mexico, with the two winners booking their tickets to the 2012 London Games.

As it happens both the USA and Canada won their respective matches. Below are the highlights of the USA/Costa Rica game. Followed by the Canadian / Mexico game.

Now that the CONCACAF representatives have been decided, the US and Canadians can now play for pride and bragging rights.

This weekend seems to have no shortage of sports for the avid onlooker, as the 2012 Winter X Games began on the 26th January and will continue till the 29th in Aspen, Colorado. The Games began with a tribute to fallen pioneer Sarah Burke in a moving salute.

Update as at 28th: Three gold medals have already been distributed on Thursday Kaya Turski of Canada got her three-peats in the Women's Ski Slopestyle Final. She was given a run for her money by Devin Logan (USA) and Anna Sagal (AUS) but the most dominant woman in her young sport pulled it out in the end on her last run. Video

On Saturday the Women's Snowboard Slopestyle Final was won by Jamie Anderson of the US with a best run score of 95.33, followed by Kelly Clark also of the US in the Women's Snowboard SuperPipe Final. She won the gold on her last run on the superpipe.

Sarah Burke Dies at 29

Once again I took a little break on telling, showing and giving stats but as I was preparing a post the news that Canadian freestyle superpipe skier Sarah Burke died today, nine days after an accident during a training run at the Park City Mountain Resort in Utah.

Burke, a four-time X-games gold medalist advocated heavily for her sport's inclusion in the Winter Olympics. Though successful she will sadly not be around to see her sport debut at the Sochi Games, Russia in 2014. At the top of her game she would have been a heavy favorite to win gold.

At the time of her death the 29-year-old Burke was preparing for the 2012 X-Games where she was set to defend her 2011 title later this month in Aspen, Colorado. She was considered to be the female pioneer of freestyle super halfpipe.

According to her publicist, "Burke's injuries had resulted in "irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest.". Her organs and tissues were donated as she requested before her death."

Sofia Jakobsson tackles Heather Mitts

In their November 19th friendly clash against budding arch rivals Sweden, the USWNT just barely managed to hold on to their unbeaten streak of 54 games on home soil.

After going one down in the 28-minute from a slightly deflected shot by Sweden's Sofia Jakobsson, that came off of defender Christie Rampone.

Sweden who have already qualified for the upcoming 2012 London Olympics, had already beaten the US twice this year. Once in January in a exhibition match and the other in Group play in the just concluded Women's World Cup. Both wins where of a 2-1 margin.

In the second half the Americans outplayed, out shot and out ran the still dangerous Swedes. Having accumulated 19 shots to Sweden's 7 and hitting the crossbar or goal post three times, super sub Alex Morgan who came on in place of Abby Wambach (slight Achilles) in the 73 minute and immediately begin making her high pressure runs.

It was in one of these runs that Morgan controlled a pass by Heather O'Reilley but had her shot blocked by Sweden's goalkeeper Kristin Hammarstrom only to have Tobin scrabble the loose ball and fire it into an open net.

That being the last match for the US in 2011 they go into camp for the remainder of the year. As they have their Olympic Qualifying Tournament in January.

The November 19th friendly against Sweden is the last match of the 2011 calendar for the US Women's National Team.

Come January OF 2012 they will battle it out with the rest of the qualifiers of CONCACAF to gain one of the two spots to the upcoming Olympics in 2012 to be held in London, England.

Canadian Women Win Gold at Pan-Am Games

At Omnilife Stadium, Guadalajara, Mexico on the 27th of this month, Canada pulled out at a thrilling victory against a formidable but young Brazilian team to win gold at the 2011 Pan-Am Games.

It took the Canadians 120 minutes and 7 penalty kicks to do it but win they did. The victory came on the heels of the disappointing early exit the Canadians suffered at the FIFA Women's World Cup held earlier this year.

Subsequent to that showing, the Canadian women's national side have had coaching and team changes in an effort to bring stability to their performances. Still the Canadians found themselves a goal behind as early as in the fourth minute of play through Brazil's Debora. It wasn't until the 88th minute of regular time that their talisman and leader Christine Sinclair levelled the score with a spectacular header.

Then after the allotted extra time brought no relief to the stalemate, it was up to the dreaded penalty shootout to decide the championship winner. Canada had completed their first three kicks successfully when the Canadian goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc, made the first of her heroic stops against Brazilian forward Grazielle.

Canada's perfect record up to that point was interrupted when defender Candice Chapman missed as she hit the left upright but LeBlanc made another heart stopping save against goalscorer Debora who just could not repeat her heroics a second time to hand Canada its first gold medal in soccer at the tournament with a final score of 4-3 on penalties (1-1).

The back to back gold medallist of the two previous Pan-Am games Brazil had to settle for silverware, while the Canadians made history with their victory. Hopefully their topsy-turvy year will be transformed with this result to win entry into next year's tournament at the Olympic games in London.

Only time will tell....

Olympic Qualifiers 2012 in Vancouver

Vancouver will be the host city for the upcoming Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) qualifications from 19-29 January 2012. The eight-team championship will feature Canada and seven continental opponents as they vie for one of two qualification spots to London 2012 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament later that year.

The newly revitalized BC Place stadium will host the eight participating teams competing in this 15-match event. Canada, Mexico and USA will fight alongside three teams from the Caribbean and two from Central America for the two coveted passes to the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament to be held in London, England, in July 2012.

With American retaining their number one ranking and boosting the silverware from the recently held Women's World Cup in Germany they are still the favourites to retain one those spots and with the performance they showed in the world cup they are the sentimental favourites as well.

The Canadians with a new coach in John Herdman will be trying to forget a rather disappointing showing at the world tournament.

Abby as she scores the first of her two goals!

So Abby Wambach and her team came home to fans and a country that has revived its love of women's soccer once again. With most of the team becoming household names, they are riding the high train into the Olympic trails next year.

First though the powers that be felt it would be fitting to give the fans something to tidy them over till then, so a two-game friendly against Canada was announced.

The first game was held on Sept. 17th in the new LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan. Forward #20-Abby Wambach did not disappoint and scored the USA's only goal of the night from a penalty-kick during the first half of play.

However, Canada's #14-Melissa Tancredi equalized just before the half completed its run. The second half saw some good football played by both sides but especially by the Canadians, who were being marshalled by their Captain #8-Diana Matheson with renewed confidence. The game ended in a draw.

Game two played on Thursday night at the JELD-WEN Field 'Soccer City' in Portland, Oregon and the Americans faired much better but only after a first-half that saw a barrage of attempts miss their mark by several of the Americans.

U.S. coach Pia Sundhage once again experimented with a one-forward system, playing Wambach up front. It seems to have paid off as the team warming up to the new formation in the second half as they scored 3 goals. Two by Wambach and one by Alex Morgan.

Hope Solo (21-Jill Loyden) wore the captain's armband to commemorate her 100th cap, earned in the World Cup semifinal against France. Canada who is getting use to playing for their new coach, John Herdman (former head coach of New Zealand) failed to reply in goal. The score line read 3 zip at full time.

The Canadians will be in preparations along with the USA and the rest of the qualifying countries from the CONCACAF region next year for a place in the 2012 Olympics in London. All will decided in Canada between 19-29 January. (more info...)

2011 WPS Champions: A Splash of Flash

Ashlyn Harris saves to win game!

On the Saturday the 27th August in the final game of this year's WPS season, the championship game was a thrilling, cagey affair that in the end had everyone at the edge of their seats as the WNY Flash and Philadelphia Independence settled it on penalty kicks 5-4. (1-1)

It took a save from the goalkeeper of the season, Ashlyn Harris, to win this one for the WNY Flash. Harris dove to her left to save the last regulated penalty kick from Laura Del Rio.

The Western New York Flash came into the finals at the top of the charts having clinched the regular season title and with that the right to host the Championships. The team boosted the leagues best record and breaking the record for scoring the most goals. The best goalkeeper in Harris, the best defensive player in Whitney Engen and the Golden Boot winner Marta were all in their line-up.

With Canada's Christine Sinclair, Brazil's Marta, America's Alex Morgan for the Flash and for the Independence having A-Rod, Tasha Kai and Spain's Veronica Boquete the final promised to be an attacker's dream. Instead it was each team's defensive unit that were the stars of the show for most of the game.

Although this was only the team's second season in the WPS, the Independence returned to the Championships via their win over magicJack. Having lost the finals last year as an expansion team, WPS coach of the year and Philadelphia's own Paul Riley moulded a team based on team ethnic and strength that saw them progress when other teams were devastated by their depleted roosters during the world cup.This fighting spirit kept them alive through the play-offs and this momentum spilled over in the finals as they levelled out the score in the last moments of extra time through Rodriguez. But it seems as if for now they will not hold the cup....maybe next year.

The WPS Championship Finals are set!

The semi-final game between Philadelphia Independence and magicJack on Saturday ended 2 : 0 in favour of the Independence. Sending them into the finals against the number one ranked team in the WPS, the Western New York Flash.

With the leagues best players on the field, the finals will be an anticipated affair. The Flash has the best defence in the WPS, the also have the best offence in the league.

Bolstering the best goalkeeper in Ashlyn Harris, best defensive player, Whitney Engen and the golden boot winner, Marta in their line-up it will take every ounce of the teamwork that the Coach of the 2011 season Paul Riley's Independence team to win!

The Championship Finals will be televised live on the Fox Network and will be hosted by the Western New York Flash at Sahlen’s Stadium on Saturday, August 27.

WPS: Breakers, Flash, Draw!

In the first televised Sunday game on 24th July, in the WPS after the conclusion of the World Cup. Both participating teams had most of their international players back on rooster and served us a much more thrilling game than we anticipated.

The game was between Western New York Flash (8-2-3) and the Boston Breakers (4-5-4), the second and third placed teams on the standings with play-off's looming near. And although both teams got off to quick starts with their star-studded team members, it was the Breakers Kelly O'Hara, who drew first blood from English international Alex Scott's cross in the 20th min. However, Marta equalized in the 37th min zipping a shot past goalie Alyssa Naeher to the far post.

After the half in the 84th minute, O'Hara struck again after some neat one touch play between Scott, Marshall, O'Hara, Zimmeck then back to O'Hara, who slotted it pass WNY goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris to make it a 2-1 game.

That seem to spur the Flash on when Morgan, who came on as a substitute at the half, scored from what is most likely to be the best if not freakiest goal of the season. (Watch Video) Feeding off a ball crossed back into the penalty area with her back to the goal she flicked the ball off the outside her left boot and buried it over the hapless Naeher.

Side Note:
Prior to the night's match, the 13 World Cup players between the two teams combined were honored on the field during a pre-game ceremony led by WPS Chief Executive Officer Anne-Marie Eileraas. The Breakers players recognized were: Rachel Buehler, Lauren Cheney, Stephanie Cox, Amy LePeilbet, and Kelley O'Hara from the U.S.; Alex Scott and Kelly Smith from England; and World Cup champion Aya Sameshima from Japan. The Flash players recognized were Alex Morgan (U.S.), Ali Riley (New Zealand), Marta (Brazil), Christine Sinclair (Canada), and Candace Chapman (Canada).

It was also Boston's Project Pink Night. Breakers players' jerseys were auctioned off during the game, and in the end, more than $8,000 was raised for the Boston chapter of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

Japan Comes Back Twice to Win First World Cup

So there it is, the most exciting, epic finals ever! Japan are the winners of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup.

This thrilling game came down to taking chances and staying calm in the end. All credit goes to the Japanese team for their triumph, but clearly it was the American's who's missed opportunities cost them the championship.

Ironically it was the Japanese that showed resilience by levelling the score each time America went ahead by a 1-goal margin, then won it on penalty kicks. For sixty odd minutes the USA racked up chance after chance, they dominated play for the first twenty minutes of the game.

The momentum swang back and forth but it was the Americans who got the first scalp, after a goalless 45-mins. 22-year-old Alex Morgan (subbed for an injured Lauren Cheney at the half) took a perfect drive from Megan Rapinoe and put the ball in the back of the net. Morgan fought off a Japanese defender and drove the ball hard and true across past Japanese keeper Kaihori to put the USA on the board and take a 1-0 lead in the 68-min.

The US seemed well on their way to claim their third championships when a disorganized clearing attempt by Rachel Buehler in their own end ended poorly when the ball went straight to Japan’s Aya Miyama right in front of the goal and got an easy chip in to tie it at 1-1 with ten minutes of regulation left. It remained so at full time, sending the game into extra-time.

All audiences to this match were getting a feeling that we were getting set up for a classic. Abby Wambach up to this point had been kept well in check by the far shorter and smaller in statue Asians, when in the 105' minute of the finals she delivered another picture perfect header to give the US the lead...again! Making history in the process as she took over as the American with the most goals scored in all world cups over Michelle Akers.

Then as true to the form as this game had taken to that point, Japan's captain Homare Sawa, scored from a corner kick to again square the score-line to 2:2. Just before the last whistle, the US had one final run to the goal by Alex Morgan but was foiled by Azusa Iwashimizu, who was immediately sent off, making it the first time in history that a player has been red-carded in a finals. Then it was penalty kicks.

The Americans usually cool heads under pressure would not prevail this day and they would not register a score until Abby Wambach's shot but by that time it was a forgone conclusion that Japan would be the new champs. Even when Hope Solo saved one penalty it wasn't enough and Japan became champions as Kumagai sealed the title for Japan.

After the game head coach of the US team, Pia Sundhage said, “It came down to a couple of mistakes. It’s hard to lose. You can’t explain [missing their first three penalty kicks] We couldn’t put away our chances.”

Abby Wambach finished by saying, “It’s heartbreaking. We had our chances. Evidently it wasn’t meant to be.”

WWC Finals: Who will Win? Japan vs USA

So the finals are all set for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup. It's between the No. 1 and the No. 4 ranked world teams, USA and Japan. Sounds simple and academic.

Right! If you know nothing about the women's game and you haven't followed any of the teams, games or know any statistics.
The Journey
These two teams had reputations and compelling stories before going into this world cup. America as the number one team carrying it's poorest form being the last team to have qualified for the championships. However with a legacy that is the most decorated in women's world soccer they have shown heart when they have been outplayed in several games but their trust and belief in one another is almost unmatched.

Comebacks in both the quarter-finals and semi-finals by their talisman and Abby Wambach and arguably the best goalie in the world, Hope Solo. They are the only team men or women to make it to the semi-finals in every tournament they have ever played. This team has galvanized their nation's interest and in the final tomorrow they will have the support of the super power that is USA.

In contrast the Japanese suffered terribly when the nation was struck with a 9.0-magnitude quake and tsunami that devastated a large swath of northern Japan. Not practising at night because they had no light was just one of the massive fallout the Japanese team had to deal with.

In their journey to the finals, they prevailed against the might of the double defending world champions and host. Then faced a very talented and speedy Swedish team in a second thriller.

The Stats
The Japanese are technically brilliant. The Americans are incredibly resilient. They both have the heart, they each have the weapons. It will come down to who wants it more.

USA striker Abby Wambach has scored three goals in Germany, all with her head. She is two away from the all time tournament record held jointly by Birgit Prinz of Germany and Marta of Brazil. She has equalled the same amount as her compatriot, the legendary Michelle Akers. If America wins, the would have held the cup more times than any other team.

The tournament's highest goal-getter is Japan's leader Homare Sawa with 4 goals. She is the absolute heartbeat of the team. Japan is the only the second Asian team to make it to a World Cup finals since China in the 1999 tournament which was won by the Americans.

For the US, it's been 12 years since they last won. As a country they have never lost a final, they are two for two. No team has lost a game and then go on to win the championship and both Japan and the USA have lost a game along the way.

The Summary
Japan and the USA have met each other three times in the last year and the Japanese have lost all three. In fact their record against the Americans doesn't fare much better. In the 25 times their countries have met USA have won 22 and drawn the rest.

The win for both teams will be unbelievable but one thing is for sure as this World Cup winds down and we look forward to 2015 in Canada. There are no super-powers in the world of women's football/soccer and the game has definitely evolved. The change from 16 to 24 teams the next time around will indeed be an event to look forward to. May the best team win!

Ok ladies, the first round still has one more game to play out and Group D still has to play their second matches but by tomorrow, if Brazil and Australia both win, we would know which teams have qualified for the the second round.

2011 Wimbledon: Female Singles - 4th Round Wipe Out!

The 4th round on Monday of the 2011 Wimbledon Championship saw an absolut rout on the female side of the draw. No. 1 seed Caroline Wozniacki narrowly lost to the 21-yr-old 24th seeded #23 Dominika Cibulkova from Bratislava, Slovakia in three sets. 6-1, 6-7, 5-7

Having a record of 6-2 in head-to-head meetings with Cibulkova and having won their last match-up, losing yet another run to her first major title makes the pressure on the world number one that much more intense.

In a first for Wimbledon, both [7] Serena Willaims and Venus Williams failed to progress to the quarter-finals on the same day. The sisters have nine Wimbledon titles between them, were favorites to meet in yet another finals even though both were coming off very lengthy absences.

Two-time defending champion Serena Williams, played against France's Marion Bartoli [9] whom she had beaten twice before, had been improving from strength to strength with every win but as predicted by their father, she lost. Papa Richard Williams, had stated before the tournament that he thought Serena had come back to soon. Her form was obviously not back but it really showed today. The match ended 3-6, 6-7.

Of Serena, Marion said: Marion said: "Beating Serena is almost like a dream come true. Even though she didn't play for almost one year, she's probably one of the greatest champions in women's tennis. For me to be able to come back after having three match points and losing this game at 6-5, and still be able to bounce back, it's really huge."

Similiarly Venus's match ended in a loss against a 2010 Wimbledon semifinalist, 23 year old 32nd seeded #34 Tsvetana Pironkova from Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Pironkova is the one players who seems to have Venus's number having beaten her 3-1 now. Venus said about her play that she, "just didn't put the ball in the court. Simple as that. Unfortunately, I seem not to have my good days against her."

In contrast #6 Maria Sharapova had a very breezy day beating China's #20 Shuai Peng 6-4, 6-2. In doing so Sharapova has reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 2006.

Things got a little dicey in the first set between the Russian former No. 1 and Chinese No.2 before Maria gained control of the second set. Ending the match in 1hour and 21 minutes.

The match was played in scorching conditions on Court Two, a marked change from the rain-interrupted first week.

I am trying to bring the games to you live here on Sports Gage for one thing and the other more reliable sources will be from ESPN 3 which you will be able to view online.
