Barako Bull leaned on a hot start by import Jamine Peterson before repulsing a late run spearheaded by Powerade’s Rashad McCants to fashion out a 106-101 victory over the Tigers in PBA Governors’ Cup action Friday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Peterson, who goes by the nickname ‘Greedy’, posted monster numbers of 33 points and 22 rebounds, but shot just 12-of-30 from the field. He looked visibly tired in the second half, where he scored just six points.

But the former Providence College standout got plenty of help from his teammates, as six locals scored at least seven points for the Energy. Danny Seigle continued his consistent run from the last conference, scoring 14 points, while Sunday Salvacion hit several key shots off the bench to tally 11.

McCants had an uneven game, and his fifth foul with eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter allowed Barako to go on a 11-4 run to take a 94-84 lead.

The former Minnesota Timberwolves draft pick led Powerade’s late charge, scoring two three-pointers in a 10-4 run that cut the lead to just four points with two minutes to go. But the Tigers could not come any closer, as Seigle, Ronald Tubid, and Peterson had timely hits to preserve Barako Bull’s lead.

Despite the win, Energy coach said he wanted more consistency out of his team. “We have to be always hot, and minimize the coldness,” he said.

Gary David led the Tigers in scoring with 25 points, while Rabeh Al-Hussaini rebounded from a miserable Powerade debut with 17 points and eight rebounds.

The scores:

Barako Bull 106 – Peterson 33, Seigle 14, Salvacion 11, Miller 9, Allado 9, Sharma 8, Tubid 7, Kramer 5, Najorda 4, Weinstein 3, Arboleda 3, Cruz 0.

Powerade 101 – David 25, McCants 23, Al-Hussaini 17, Anthony 13, Casio 10, Salvador 9, Lingganay 2, Vanlandingham 2, Allera 0, Calimag 0, Adducul 0.

Quarters: 27-24, 50-49, 76-74, 106-101

Boxing analyst Larry Merchant believes it is possible Timothy Bradley might get knocked out cold when the unbeaten American faces Manny Pacquiao. “Is it possible? Yeah. It’s possible,” Merchant said in Boxing Scene.

Although Bradley has a fighting style which may prove difficult for the defending champion, Merchant said the fleet-footed American has never faced an opponent with Pacquiao’s caliber.

“Look, not many guys have been able to nail Bradley on the way in. He doesn’t come in a straight lines, he protects himself, he’s awkward, and a difficult guy to deal with,” said the long-time HBO ring commentator.

“But he’s never faced anyone like Pacquiao. When you get to that guy on the top, we’ll see whether his kind of mauling, brawling tactics work.”

Pacquiao will be defending his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title against Bradley on June 9.

Merchant said it will be an important fight for Pacquiao, who will have to show that he still has the same ferocity he has become known for.

He added that the Bradley bout is also an opportunity for Pacquiao to prove that he only had a night off during his lackluster performance against Juan Manuel Marquez.

“This is a fight that could show us whether Pacquiao still has the zeal and the capability to fight on the level he was, say against Miguel Cotto. And I think it’s important for him to make a good fight after the Marquez fight and some of the other fights,” said Merchant.

American Vinyl-LPGMA’s Cris Joven outsprinted Mark Galedo of Roadbike Phils. for a photo-finish triumph in Stage 2 of the 2nd LBC Ronda Pilipinas that ended in Davao on Friday.

Joven, who marked his 26th birthday last Thursday, and Galedo broke away from the lead pack with 10 kilometers to go and duelled all the way to the finish line.

The birthday boy eventually captured the 145.1-km. race from General Santos City through the winding route to Davao in a time of three hours, 39 minutes and 55 seconds.

“Duon pa General Santos City nanalangin ako kahapon (Thursday) na gabayan ako at manalo ako sa stage na ‘to, at binigay naman,” said Joven, who pocketed the top individual stage prize of P50,000.

The event is presented by LBC and supported by Total, MVP Sports Foundation and Rudy Project.

Galedo, who made his move by ruling the second King-of-the Mountain stage at the 134.2-km. point, took home P25,000, while Eastern Pangasinan rider Emil Pablo, 25, came at head of the main breakaway group and took third (3:40.05), worth P15,000.

One Tarlac’s Tomas Martinez, who wore the LBC red jersey after topping the first stage, clung to the overall lead after finishing in the 10-man third group, which came in with identical clockings of 3:40.40.

Martinez retained the lead with an aggregate time of 8:31.31 while Army-RC Cola’s Alvin Benosa, who checked in with the former, was just 11 seconds behind in second place (8:31.42).

V-Mobile’s Oscar Rendole slipped one rung to third (8:31.45).

Armed with a deeper talent pool, the Philippine Azkals are still expected to field a formidable side against Malaysia in an international friendly on June 1 even without three key players.

Azkals team manager Dan Palami expressed confidence that the Azkals could get the job done at the Shah Alam Stadium in Selangor on June 1when the national side battles the reigning Suzuki Cup champion in a rematch of its showdown last February that ended in a 1-1 draw.

Brothers Phil and James Younghusband have ruled themselves out of the clash because of prior commitments, while first-choice keeper Neil Etheridge will serve a one-game suspension for his off-field actions during the third-place clash against Palestine in the AFC Challenge Cup in Nepal.

“I think we still have the players who are committed to play and are capable of getting a result against Malaysia,” said Palami.
Expected to play for the Azkals are goalkeeper Roland Muller, defenders Rob Gier, Juani Guirado, Ray Jonsson and Carli de Murga, midfielders Stephan Schrock, Angel Guirado, Paul Mulders, Manny Ott, Chieffy Caligdong and striker Denis Wolf.

Fil-Danish standouts Jerry Lucena and Dennis Cagara will beef up the Azkals lineup in the June 5 friendly against Indonesia at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The Azkals are currently in Bacolod for a weeklong camp that has given unheralded players like Arnie Pasinabo, Patrick Deyto, Jovanie Simpron Antonio Albor, Bervic Italia, Anto Gonzales and OJ Clarino the opportunity to earn the nod of coach Michael Weiss.

“We’re happy that these players were released by their clubs in the UFL. Commitment to the team is very important as of the moment and we are hoping they can show that in the camp,” said Palami.

Although the Younghusband brothers already left the camp Thursday, a fresh wave of players based in Europe are expected to join the team today, including defender Gier, Wolf, Ott and e Jong.

The Azkals will play in a four-team exhibition tournament starting Saturday at the Panaad Stadium that will also involve the national Under-22 team preparing for the AFC Championships in June.

Miami's LeBron James hailed team mate Dwyane Wade's "spectacular" 41-point performance after the Heat booked their place in the Eastern Conference finals with a 105-93 win over the Indiana Pacers on Thursday. (Friday, PHL time)

The victory wrapped up a 4-2 series win for Miami, who lost Chris Bosh to injury in Game One then lost two in a row to trail the Pacers 2-1 in the series.

Following a 94-75 Game Three road loss, James and Wade took control of the series and lifted the Heat to three wins in a row. James delivered 30 points in an outstanding Game Five performance and Wade took center stage on Thursday.

"He was spectacular from the beginning to the end," said James, who had 28 points. "He got in the rhythm early and just kept it going throughout the whole game.

"He made jump hooks at the post, he made pull-up jumpers, he made floaters over the top of the bigs and also got to the free throw line eight times, he also rebounded tonight, he was great," added James.

This season's Most Valuable Player, James also praised coach Erik Spoelstra for the way he adjusted Miami's set-up to cope with the loss of Bosh to an abdominal injury.

That setback had threatened to cut short Miami's postseason but after a shocking performance in Game Three in Indianapolis, Spoelstra found the right formula to let his two top men shine.

"Coach Spo' from Game Three on made some unbelievable adjustments that allowed us to do the things that we did," said James.

"He put us in a position offensively and defensively to make the plays, to help us to win. Just as he says that we played spectacularly, he coached spectacularly this series."

Alarm bells

Wade's performance in Game Three had set the alarm bells ringing, as he finished with five points on 2-13 shooting, but he was back to his very best when it came to crunch time.

"Sometimes you have a bad game, it happens," said Wade.

"All I did was to continue to play basketball the way I always have, sometimes you struggle, sometimes the ball is not going in.

"I got back to the basics, I felt good, I felt strong, my team mates continued to get me open and to look for me and my confidence stayed at the level that it was in Game Four and just continued".

Pacers coach Frank Vogel acknowledged there was little his team could do to contain two of the best players of the last decade.

"They were terrific tonight, they were really terrific the whole series," Vogel said.

"When Wade and James are going like they were going tonight, they're going to be tough to beat by anybody."

The Heat now get a break while they wait for the outcome of Saturday's Game Seven between the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers to determine their opponent for Monday's opening game in the Conference final.

"I appreciate the extra rest," said Wade, "I think it's well deserved." (Reporting By Simon Evans in Miami; Editing by Peter Rutherford)

“The Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire Jr. shrugged off criticisms about his decision to fight IBF super bantamweight king Jeffrey Mathebula instead of Cristian Mijares.

Donaire, the WBO 122-pound title holder, explained through his Facebook account that he decided to face Mathebula in an effort to unify the belts.

“Entertaining how a lot of people think they understand boxing by dropping names here and there and don't see why I picked Mathebula over Mijares,” he said.

Unlike the South African champion, Mijares doesn’t own a world title at super bantamweight.

He also hinted that aside from the titles at stake, the negotiation process with Mijares has forced him to pick the South African champion.

“They don't get why having two belts is worth anything, or how hard it is to reach a negotiation with certain fighters,” said Donaire.

Local teams San Miguel Beer and Philippine Patriots brace for a pair of explosive games with Westports Malaysia and Indonesia, respectively, as action in the ASEAN Basketball League heats up with the playoffs this weekend.

The Beermen, riding the crest of a seven-game run, take on the Dragons at 4 p.m. tomorrow at the Olivarez gym in Sucat while the Patriots battle the Warriors at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig Sunday.

The San Miguel-Westports Malaysia clash promises to be a highly competitive duel, with the former out to sustain their streak, including 12 wins in their last 13 games, and the Dragons out to humble the hosts. During their seven-game run, the Beermen rode on their defense to limit their rivals to 72.7 points per game.

Like the Beermen, the Patriots are fancied to get past the Warriors in their own side of the best-of-three series with the former banking on imports Anthony Johnson and Nakiea Miller and locals Aldrech Ramos, Marcy Arellano, Jonathan Fernandez, Ardy Larong, Kiko Adriano, Erick Rodriguez, Al Vergara and Eddie Laure.

San Miguel, which topped the regular season with a 17-4 slate, has a 2-1 edge over Westports Malaysia, which had an 11-10 record, in their head-to-head duel.

Imports Duke Crews and Nick Fazekas are tipped to re-assert their might for the Beermen after combining for 55 points in dealing the Dragons a 92-76 beating at MABA Stadium last April.

But Malaysia’s big man Brian Williams, who failed to see action with a knee injury, is expected to be back and provide the Dragons the needed muscle and force underneath in partnership with Tiras Wade, the league’s top scorer.

Coach Bobby Parks is also expected to lean on locals Froilan Baguion, Roger Yap, Leo Avenido and Chris Banchero.

Dwyane Wade turned on the style as the Miami Heat clinched a place in the NBA Eastern Conference finals with a 105-93 win over the Indiana Pacers in Game Six on Thursday (Friday, PHL time).

The Heat sealed the best-of-seven semifinal series 4-2 and will face Boston or Philadelphia for the conference title. The Celtics and 76ers play a deciding Game Seven on Saturday (Sunday, PHL time).

Miami returns to the Eastern finals for the second successive year. Last season they beat Chicago to reach the NBA Championship where they lost to the Dallas Mavericks 4-2.

Indiana made a strong start and led 28-21 after the first quarter before Wade took charge, scoring 20 points in the second. Wade ended with 41 points, 10 rebounds and three assists, while LeBron James had 28 points.

Game Five in Miami had been a brutal affair with some nasty fouls, but while no quarter was given on Thursday (Friday, PHL time) the aggression was kept within acceptable limits.

"It was a tough, physical, very competitive series and we hope that the series will not be marred by the last game because if you take that out, it was just a competitive, hotly contested series and that is what it should be remembered for," said Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra.

Miami, who wrapped up the series with three consecutive wins, were helped by 22 Indiana turnovers, compared with the Heat's 10, and solid performances from Mario Chalmers (15 points) and Mike Miller (12).

Miami were playing without suspended Udonis Haslem and the injured Chris Bosh, but the form of Wade, who had 26 points in the first half to equal the franchise postseason record for the opening two quarters, more than compensated.

David West top scored for Indiana with 24 points while Danny Granger, who shrugged off an ankle problem to play, had 15 and George Hill 18.

The absence of Bosh, who picked up an abdominal injury in Game One, caused Miami some problems in the series as they were forced to adjust their offense but Indiana coach Frank Vogel said it had not seriously weakened the Heat.

"Chris Bosh is an awesome basketball player but when he goes down ... that means more touches for LeBron and Wade, that's not an advantage," he told reporters.

"I think we could have beaten these guys if we had played our best but we didn't play our best.

"Hopefully we'll be back to see these guys in the future but you have to tip your cap to Miami, coach Spoelstra did a great job," he added. - Reuters

After going through the tapes of Timothy Bradley’s fights, Freddie Roach has found what he’s been looking for. “I have watched a lot of tapes on him and have seen a lot of holes on his defense,” said the celebrated trainer during yesterday’s conference call.

Manny Pacquiao, who will stake his WBO welterweight crown against Bradley on June 9, and chief promoter Bob Arum were also on the end of the line.

Roach said those “holes” are enough to satisfy his thoughts, his belief that Pacquiao will get past the younger and hungrier foe on June 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Whether by decision or by knockout, Roach said Pacquiao will prevail.

“We are going to take advantage of them,” said Roach of Bradley’s defensive lapses which of course he did not enumerate.

It’s for his consumption, and by this time, just over two weeks to the fight, Pacquiao must have stored them in his mind.

Everybody knows that Bradley, undefeated in 28 fights, has the habit of leading with his head, and in previous sessions, Filipino trainer Buboy Fernandez mimicked Bradley inside the ring.

It could be dangerous.

“Yes, Bradley does come in head first. We have been working on how to nullify that,” Roach told the lengthy conference call.

“We have a lefty fighting against a righty. The two heads may clash, that could happen and it’s something we have to be aware of and something we will be prepared for,” said Roach.

Bradley will host his own conference call on Friday (Saturday in Manila) and he’s expected to say what he’s been saying all camp long.

Bradley said this is his time and on June 9 he will “destroy” Pacquiao.

“I have been watching Bradley a lot and he doesn’t rely very much on counter-punching. He is very offensive. He comes to fight which will make it a good fight for everybody.

“We have the game plan set after watching many, many tapes of Bradley. Manny should have a very good fight on June 9,” said Roach.

Meanwhile, Bradley said he knows how to deal with southpaws.

But can he deal with a southpaw as fast, as strong as Pacquiao?

In an interview with www.ringTV.com, Bradley said fighting two southpaws in a row will help him cope with the Filipino superstar.

Bradley knocked out Devon Alexander inside 10 rounds in January last year and stopped the aging Joel Casamayor inside eight rounds last November.

Alexander and Casamayor are both southpaws.

“This will be my third, yep (against southpaws),” the 28-year-old Bradley told Lem Satterfield in the other day.

“So basically what’s going down is that I’m a lot more familiar with the southpaw stance. I’ve not been in with a right-hander in my last three fights,” he added.

But Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, thinks it will be much easier said than done. He said Bradley has never faced anyone as strong as Pacquiao.

The brand-new Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena will open its doors to basketball next month. If the NCAA decides to hold its season opener at the P3.6 Billion facility on June 23, then the collegiate league will gain the historic distinction of being the first to stage a game on the Robbins maplewood court with NBA-standard Spalding goals, an eight-sided center-hung LED Daktronics scoreboard and two-sided shot clocks.

The NCAA will make a decision any day now on whether to hold the inaugurals at the MOA Arena or the Smart Araneta Coliseum which is reportedly the preferred choice of the TV coveror for practical logistical reasons.

If the NCAA decides on the Big Dome, then the first basketball game to be played at the MOA Arena will pit the PBA selection coached by Tim Cone against Yao Ming’s visiting Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese pro league on June 28. Another game involving the Sharks is being arranged against coach Chot Reyes’ Smart Gilas on June 30, also at the MOA Arena. For sure, the UAAP will launch its new season at the MOA Arena on July 14 with National University (NU) as host.

SM Prime Holdings president and NU chairman Hans Sy said he estimates about 50 percent of the UAAP and NCAA games will be played at the MOA Arena. He noted that from June 1 until the end of the year, only 13 days are left unbooked in the MOA Arena’s calendar. August, for instance, has been reserved for Cirque du Soleil.

“We’re ready for basketball,” said Sy who masterminded the two-year construction of the five-level building. “It takes only three hours to lay out the hardcourt. We’ve incorporated certain things I observed in the Orlando stadium during the last NBA All-Star Game and I think our arena is truly state-of-the-art. Lady Gaga’s director told me that of all the Asian stadiums they’ve performed in, we’re second-best behind only Japan which has a capacity of 30,000.”

The Daktronics 46-ton octagon scoreboard was installed three weeks ago and during the two recent Lady Gaga concerts, was clamped close to the ceiling. It will be lowered for eye-level view during basketball games. American technicians from Daktronics of South Dakota arrived to supervise the hoisting of the scoreboard, employing a 120-ton crane and 24 men.

“Daktronics powers about 90 percent of NBA arenas,” said Wopsy Zamora, owner of Amigo Entertainment Technologies which is the MOA Arena’s light and sound contractor. “Our center-hung scoreboard was made in the US particularly for the MOA Arena. It has four giant LED high-definition monitors hooked up to the TV coveror and in between the monitors on the sides are four more screens to make an uneven octagon similar to the Memphis Grizzlies scoreboard. Additionally, each goal will be equipped with two transparent, double-faced shot clocks – one six feet above the goal and another below it on a 90 degree angle or perpendicular to provide a view from an angle. Our unified show control system is linked to LED video displays with 18 meters of advertising space on the scorers table adjacent to the players bench and 36 meters across the floor on the press table. You’ll feel like you’re in an NBA stadium.”

The Denver architectural firm Sink Combs Dethlefs patterned the MOA Arena after the Atlanta Hawks’ home Philips Arena. Seating for basketball will accommodate 14,549 with a capacity of 4,075 for general admission and 4,459 for lower box. Every general admission ticket is guaranteed a seat. The building was configured to give every seat a clear view with “nosebleeding” a thing of the past.

Sy supervised the MOA Arena’s construction from start to finish. “Late last year, nobody believed we could open on May 21 for Lady Gaga,” he said. “That’s because we had no roof. But not too many knew that we were building from the inside so work was progressing. I don’t believe in doing three shifts to work 24 hours. Our work hours were from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Before we opened with Lady Gaga, the last thing we did was bolt the seats down. I went around to inspect all the seats to make sure every seat was bolted. Then, I called everyone together, the whole working team. I rode them hard from the beginning and they delivered. I wanted to thank them for a job well done.”

A unique feature of the MOA Arena is its 41 VIP boxes, 31 of which are sold and 10 are for use as event lounges. The 31 boxes are leased at P9 to P12 Million a year, depending on the size (seating capacity ranges from 17 to 27). Each box has a mini-bar, sofas, sitting room, rest room and a gallery viewing section. No doubt, Sy’s “Hans-on” approach is what beat the odds in finishing the MOA Arena in record time. by Joaquin Henson | philstar.com

The Big Chill Superchargers sealed their entry into the semifinals with a victory over the RnW Pacific Pipes Steelmasters, 78-67, Thursday in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Treston Gym in Taguig.

The win gave Big Chill a 7-2 win-loss record and a tie with the idle Cebuana Lhuillier Gems, but the Superchargers advanced to the semifinals outright by virtue of their victory over the Gems in the elimination round.

“This is just our short-term goal [entering the semis], but the job is not yet done. We’re not contented by just making the semis. Our ultimate goal is to win the championship,” said Big Chill coach Robert Sison.

The Superchargers turned the game into a rout with a 30-13 advantage in the second period for a 43-27 halftime advantage.

Keith Jensen had 14 points including baskets late during Big Chill’s 12-6 finish to clinch the victory.

In the second game, the NLEX Road Warriors swept the elimination round with a 72-55 victory over the Boracay Rum Waves.

The Road Warriors went for the sweep despite being already assured of a semifinal berth, eliminating the Waves in the process.

“This is a statement game for us. We want to show that we always strive for excellence. Sweeping the elims is an achievement, but only half of the job is done,” said NLEX coach Boyet Fernandez.

It was the first time a team swept the elimination round in the short history of the league.

With the defeat, Boracay Rum missed a trip to the quarterfinal round. The Waves ended the eliminations with a 3-6 record, in a tie with the Café France Bakers, Erase Plantcenta and Junior Powerade. Due to the Bakers' superior quotient though, they will be the team to advance to the post-season, leaving the other three teams on the outside looking in.

He wants to make sure what happened last October, when he won the title against another Mexican, Ramon Garcia Hirales, won’t happen again.

On the scorecards, Nietes was the unanimous winner. But inside the ring, it looked otherwise as the 30-year-old Filipino was in trouble, and bled from a cut.

Hirales felt he was robbed, and demanded a rematch even before he stepped out of the ring. He said the two judges who scored it 118-110 and 117-111 saw a different fight.

Nietes said he was never hurt by Hirales, just out of gas, and that the judges called it fair and square. Filipino judge Danrex Tapdasan called it 115-113.

But Hirales did not get the rematch, and instead it will be Salguero, from Toluca, Mexico, who will slug it out with Nietes.

“Mas pinag-handaan ko na ito (I trained harder for this),” said Nietes, who loves to parade his pet python during the ring introduction.

In the main undercard, undefeated Milan Melindo (26-0 with 10 knockouts) tests Jesus Gelez of Colombia for the WBO International flyweight crown.

Filipino Genesis “Azukal” Servania (17-0) will take on “the real” Genaro Garcia for the WBC International super-bantamweight crown.

A fake Genaro Garcia showed up in Tagbilaran City last March to face Boom Boom Bautista, and organizers almost scrapped the event at the last minute.

Nietes sounded confident in the first defense of his 108 lb title.

“This will be a good fight,” said the boxer who held on to the WBO minimumweight crown from 2007 until 2010.

Except for his ring record of 16-2-1 with 11 knockouts, and that both his losses came in his first two fights as a pro, nothing much is written about Salguero.

“Pero kilala ko siya (But I know him). Halos pareho kami ng galaw (We almost move the same). Kaya magandang laban ito,” said Nietes.

He said he will go for the knockout if there’s an opportunity. He said if it comes, then it comes, but that he won’t force the issue.

“I will try my best,” Nietes (29-1-3 with 16 KOs) said.

He wasn’t at his best the last time.

Prominent import agent Sheryl Reyes wasn’t the least bit surprised about the idea of former NBA superstar Allen Iverson playing in the Philippines.

In an interview with NBA TV, host Rick Kamla noted the Philippines as a possible destination for the 2001 NBA Most Valuable Player (video below - skip to 11:10), after Iverson made an appearance in the Philadelphia 76ers’ match against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday.

“Yeah, dati pa,” said Reyes about Iverson’s interest in possibly coming to the country.

“I’ve tried to hook up with Moore Management, which handles him, pero mukhang ,alabo because of the amount. But Allen was really interested and his interest even grew when he learned that several other ex-NBA players were able to play in the PBA like DerMarr Johnson, Rodney White and Donnell Harvey.”

Iverson, according to Reyes, is close to Johnson, his former teammate with the Denver Nuggets. Johnson played last conference for Barako Bull in the PBA.

“Iverson is a good friend of DerMarr and he was the one who encouraged Allen to play here, but when we talked about the contract details, he can’t bend down for a low contract,” Reyes said.

“Iverson wants $120,000 a month,” said Reyes. PBA imports are paid a maximum of $20,000 a month for their services, according to uniform league contracts.

Listed at just 6-feet, Iverson would have easily been eligible to play in the ongoing Governors’ Cup, which caps the height of reinforcements at 6-foot-5. Iverson, however, would have to deal with being at a height disadvantage against taller imports — a risky proposition for PBA teams.

The PBA wouldn’t have been Iverson’s first stint playing for an international squad. In 2010, Iverson signed a two-year, $4-million deal with Turkish club Besiktas. But he was let out of his contract after incurring a left calf injury that required him to go back to the United States for treatment.

Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez's July 14 fight date was cancelled after he refused several opponents presented to him by Top Rank Promotions, according to the company's CEO, Bob Arum.

Marquez has long been reported to be making his ring return on July 14 at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas but it was cancelled recently after the Mexican could not find an opponent.

“Here was the problem,” Arum said in an interview with Boxing Scene. “He didn’t want to fight the guys that we recommended. But he wanted big money to fight guys who are not sale-able. They might be good fighters, but I can’t sell them.”

Arum said Marquez was “fixated on southpaws,” left-handed boxers who, Marquez believes, can prepare him for a potential fourth bout with Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao.

“He was fixated on southpaws. I’m not criticizing him. He’s getting in the ring and he’s plotting his career and he believes that he’s doing the right thing for himself,” Arum said.

One of the fighters Marquez wanted to face was Filipino lightweight prospect Mercito Gesta, an undefeated young boxer.

But Arum said that Gesta is not a marketable boxer, which makes it difficult to pay Marquez the big-time money he wanted.

“To pay him that amount of money that he was asking for to fight Gesta, we couldn’t do it. Not that it’s not a good fight and not that Gesta is not a good fighter, but he’s not as marketable,” he said.

“I’m not going to burn up money by putting him on in fights that I don’t believe are marketable,” Arum added.

Their final deadline was last weekend, Arum said. “And when he rejected everybody that we wanted – we passed, he passed, and that’s it,” he said.

Marquez will now instead fight on either July 21 or July 28 in Mexico against a yet to be named opponent.

Gesta, meanwhile, will fight on July 20 on a card televised by ESPN.

After winning the recent PBA Commissioner’s Cup title, B-Meg Derby Ace how wants to score its first back-to-back title win in its 23-year existence in Asia’s first play-for-pay league.

The Llamados are hoping they could pull it off with a superb import in tow.

According to PBA.ph, B-Meg will be unleashing reinforcement Marqus Blakely when it begins its back-to-back title campaign against Rain or Shine this Friday.

Blakely won America East Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year twice and the America East Defensive Player of the Year Award three times during his time with Vermont.

He led the America East in steals (2.6 pg) and blocks (1.9 pg), finishing second in points (17.4 pg), rebounds (9.1 pg) and field goal percentage (54.1%).

B-Meg coach Tim Cone is hopeful Blakely will blend with the team.

Cone said he hopes that Blakely can adjust well as the ongoing Governors Cup is even shorter than the previous tourney.

“It’s also a sprint and it’s a must that you get to a good start,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao said Friday would be the best time they play against the Llamados.

Guiao said they would like to get the opportunity to play against B-Meg while Blakey remains unfamiliar with the Llamados’ system.

“Of course, B-Meg is still formidable even with the lack of preparation but I would rather play them early than later,” Guiao added.

Filipino lightweight prospect Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta is scheduled for a new fight date now that his possible matchup against Juan Manuel Marquez has been moved.

The unbeaten Cebuano will be returning to ring action on July 20 in an ESPN fight card, according to a Boxing Scene report.

Gesta has yet to get an opponent for the July fight card, but his trainer Vince Parra prefers him to face undefeated Colombian Darley Perez.

Gesta, who halted Colombian Oscar Cuero last April, was hoping that he could get the biggest break of his career by facing Marquez.

But Marquez reportedly refused to lower his purse demand for the fight that was supposed to take place at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Texas on July 14.

James, who has won three of the last four league MVP awards, earned first team honors for a fifth consecutive season and sixth overall since entering the NBA in 2003.

The eight-time All-Star ranked third in the NBA in scoring, averaging 27.1 per game in the 2011-12 season, and paced the Heat in assists, with an average of 6.2 per game.

Durant gained All-NBA first team selection for a third time after leading the league in scoring (28 points per game) for a third straight year. He scored at least 40 points four times, including a career-high 51 against the Denver Nuggets.

Magic center Howard, who led the league in rebounding with a career-high average of 14.5 per game and also in field goal percentage (.573), won All-NBA first team honors for a fifth consecutive season.

Bryant was chosen for the seventh consecutive season and 10th time in his career while fellow guard Paul, who paced the league in steals with an average of 2.53 per game, gained the honor for a second time.

The second team consisted of San Antonio's Tony Parker, Oklahoma's Russell Westbrook, Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers, Minnesota's Kevin Love and Andrew Bynum of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Third team members were Miami's Dwyane Wade, Boston's Rajon Rondo, Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler of the New York Knicks, and Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki.

The teams were selected by a panel of 120 journalists in the United States and Canada. - Reuters

The controversy spawned by Manny Pacquiao’s stance on gay marriage could actually mean more pay-per-view buys for the boxer’s June 9 title defense. Bob Arum told sports columnist Tim Dahlberg that Pacquiao’s stand against same-sex union may have caught the attention of some sectors in the US.

The attention, said Arum, could help sell Pacquiao’s upcoming fight against Timothy Braldey.

"We have so many evangelical Christians living in this country that have paid attention to this whole thing. Some of these people would never think of buying a fight and they might buy it, I don't know. It certainly isn't what was intended," said Arum.

Pacquiao created a stir after sharing his thoughts about US President Barack Obama’s support for same-sex marriage.

The fighting congressman said he didn’t favor same-sex union which ran against his Christian beliefs.

But his stand became even more controversial when a couple of media outlets have mistakenly quoted him invoking a Biblical passage, which generally called for death against homosexuals.

Pacquiao denied citing verses from the Holy Scripture in relation to same-sex marriage.

"The reporter asked me about my stance on it and I answered his question," Pacquiao said. "I am against legalizing same-sex marriage. That was all I said."

Dahlberg, meanwhile, said the Filipino boxer could not have made the statements to sell his upcoming fight.

“It's hard to believe Pacquiao tried to insert himself into the debate over gay marriage in the hope it would sell a few more pay-per-views for his June 9 fight against Timothy Bradley,” he said.

He said even Arum could not have hatched the idea of using the same sex union as a scheme to sell fight tickets.

“He's been promoting fights for the better part of a half century and done some silly things to sell tickets, but even he wouldn't have been able to dream up a scheme to get this fight in the news by having Pacquiao seem to disparage gays as well as gay marriage,” Dahlberg said.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight king Junior Dos Santos is confident that his hand speed will be too much for Frank Mir to handle.

Dos Santos, who is set to defend his title against Mir in UFC 146, acknowledged Mir’s exceptional ground skills.

“His ground game, his jiu-jitsu is very good. He kicks very well, too,” the champion said in UFC.com.

Mir is expected to force his excellent ground game against Dos Santos, who is more adept while fighting standing up.

But Dos Santos said he is likely to stun Mir with his superior speed before being forced to the ground.

“I'm way faster than him and I can punch him before he gets closer,” said the heavy-handed Brazilian.

Since he’s the reigning champion, Dos Santos said he will be the one who will dictate the tempo, not Mir.

“I'm gonna push him more and more until he gets tired and then I'll knock him out,” said Dos Santos.

“I don't care how tough he is, or how tough this fight is gonna be. I will win this fight and I will keep my belt for a long time. Nobody's gonna take this belt.”

UFC 146 takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada this Saturday.

It will be aired locally by BALLS Channel on Sunday with replays on Studio 23.

The Far Eastern University Tamaraws cruised to another victory as they disposed of the Arellano University Chiefs with ease, 79-64, Wednesday to improve to 5-1 in the FilOil Flying V Pre-season Tournament at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Tams never looked back after a 7-0 start as the FEU backcourt proved to be too strong for the Chiefs. Halfway through the first period, Terrence Romeo went on a personal 6-0 spurt, shooting a step back three and getting three more points from the free throw line as FEU posted a 17-7 lead. Mark Belo added two more free throws while Romeo split from the line as the first quarter ended with the Tams up 21-7.

In the second period, Arellano tried to stage a comeback as Prince Caperal challenged Russel Escoto in the paint, while Nard Pinto and Isiah Ciriacruz chipped in six to bring the lead down to eight, 25-17. The Tams, however, countered as a team, with Anthony Hargrove, Belo, and RR Garcia pushing the tempo for easy baskets to give FEU a 14-point lead at the half, 33-19.

Garcia continued to pour it on in the third, as he scored five straight to open up the period. Ciriacruz tried to keep Arellano afloat, as he scored two three pointers of his own, but FEU had too many offensive options as Romeo, Hargrove, and Roger Pogoy kept the their lead at double-digits heading to the final period, 54-41.

In the fourth, FEU looked to finish off their opponents early, as the Tams detonated a 13-2 run early on. In response, the Generals tried to stage one last comeback, stringing seven points together to bring the lead down to 12, 69-57.

After a timeout, the Tams quelled the uprising as Romeo and Garcia combined for eight quick points to bring the lead back up to 20. Ciriacruz hit a three with 1:21 remaining, but the lead proved to be too large for Arellano to conquer.

RR Garcia, a former UAAP MVP, led all scorers, punching in 25 points in 27 minutes, on 10-of-15 field goal shooting. He also added two rebounds, two assists and two steals. His partner, Terrence Romeo, poured in 23 points, plus four assists, while Anthony Hargrove narrowly missed a double-double with 11 markers and nine boards.

Isiah Ciriacruz led the Chiefs with 18 points, converting 7-of-11 attempts. Fil-Canadian AJ Serjue chimed in 15 points, four assists and three swipes, but turned the ball over a team-high six times.

Helping the Tamaraws in their cause was a bout of sharp outside shooting, as they converted half of their 14 triple tries. The Chiefs on the other hand, were a mere 4-of-12 from outside the arc.

At 5-1, FEU has all but clinched the second seed in Group B, behind National University's perfect record. Arellano on the other hand, sank to 2-4.

The scores:

FEU 79 - Garcia 25, Romeo 23, Hargrove 11, Tolomia 8, Belo 6, Pogoy 2, Mendoza 2, Cruz 2, Escoto 0, Jumao-as 0, Huevos 0, Inigo 0

AU 64 - Ciriacruz 18, Serjue 15, Caperal 10, Acidre 9, Hernandez 8, Cadavis 2, Pinto 2, Salcedo 0, Malanday 0, Lunas 0, Bangga 0, Palma 0, Casino 0

Despite an upset stomach, One Tarlac’s Tomas Martinez was able to surge away from a four-man lead group to rule Stage 1 of the 2nd LBC Ronda Pilipinas in General Santos City on Thursday.

The 32-year-old Martinez struck with V-Mobile’s Oscar Rendole, Road Bike Phil’s Mark Galedo and Army-RC Cola’s Alvin Benosa at the halfway mark of the 183.3-kilometer run to the coastal town of Kiamba, Sarangani back to Gensan.

In the end, Tarlac native nabbed his second win by topping the leg in a time of four hours, 24 minutes and 13 seconds.

Benosa, who fought off cramps with four kilometers remaining, took second and was nine seconds off (4:24.32), while Rendole followed on third spot (4:24.22) of the cycling showcase presented by LBC and supported by Total, MVP Sports Foundation and Rudy Project.

“Hindi rin ako akalain na mananalo ako dahil sumama ang tiyan ko pagkatapos mag-almusal. Buti na lang nakapagtiis, nakabalik at nagwagi,” said Martinez, who pocketed P50,000 for his stage triumph on top of another P2,000 for getting the LBC red jersey.

The P7.5-million, 16-stage nationwide marathon will hop from Mindanao, Visayas to Luzon before ending up at the Quirino Granstand on June 10 in Manila.

Left biting the dust was V-Mobile’s Orlie Villanueva, the surprise winner of Wednesday’s prologue, who was never in contention as he wound up tied in for 20th to 24th places in a bunch that included defending champion Santi Barnechea of Navy-Standard Insurance.

They both had identical times of 4:2416, two minutes and one second.

To show its commitment to the national cause, the PBA has adjusted its 2012-13 schedule this early to accomodate the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national program.

“We have already calendared our events for next year,” PBA commissioner Chito Salud told InterAKTV. “The league will start September 30, 2012 and will end July 28, 2013.”

According to Salud, that will give enough time for PBA players who are part of the national pool to practice with the team, which is scheduled to compete in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship. At stake in the biennial cage meet are three spots to the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2014.

The schedule for the FIBA Asia tournament has not been finalized. Last year, the competition was held from September 15-25 in Wuhan, China.

Salud added that pool players from squads that have already been eliminated would be free to join practice.

Incoming SMART-Gilas coach Chot Reyes named 16 PBA players to be part of the pool. Jimmy Alapag, Jayson Castro, Ranidel De Ocampo, Larry Fonacier, Ryan Reyes, and Kelly Williams of Talk ‘N Text, LA Tenorio and Sonny Thoss of Alaska, Enrico Villanueva of Barangay Ginebra, Gary David of Powerade and Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine have signed a letter of intent to join the squad. Other players named to the pool are James Yap and Marc Pingris of B-MEG, and Arwind Santos, Alex Cabagnot, and Marcio Lassiter of Petron.

Reyes will also name a cadet squad of top amateur players to be part of the pool.

In an earlier interview, former SMART-Gilas coach Rajko Toroman told InterAKTV that PBA players joining the national team would need shorter time to prepare for a high-level cage competition.

“Even in Europe, players are also playing for their respective club teams and would only prepare for three months, so I think it would be enough time as well for the PBA players,” he said.

The Philadelphia 76ers ground out an 82-75 win over the Boston Celtics on Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time) to force a deciding Game Seven in their Eastern Conference second-round playoff series.

Philadelphia's season-saving victory was far from pretty, but they avoided elimination with a gritty effort that tied the best-of-seven series at 3-3 and set up the decider in Boston on Saturday (Sunday, PHL time).

"I think it's going to be crazy, especially being there in Boston," said 76ers point guard Jrue Holiday, who led Philadelphia with 20 points.

"We need to go in there and get this win. I'm looking forward to it."

Elton Brand added 13 and 10 rebounds for Philadelphia, who are on the brink of springing another postseason upset after eliminating top seeds Chicago in the opening round.

Boston's Paul Pierce recorded 24 points and 10 rebounds while Kevin Garnett had 20 and 11 but no other Celtics player scored more than nine and they finished with just 33 percent shooting from the field.

"I thought they had a lot of energy from the building. They just outplayed us," said Celtics coach Doc Rivers.

"We played random a lot. We have to do a better job offensively."

Boston took a 36-33 lead during a sluggish first half but fell behind in the second half.

Timothy Bradley turned down an opportunity to face Amir Khan, but it worked out in the end for him, as he wound up with a match against Manny Pacquiao for the WBO World Welterweight Championship, the fighter told boxing blog Bad Left Hook.

"I am thrilled beyond compare that I am challenging Manny Pacquiao," Bradley said. "I was at the right place at the right time.

"I am now in a place where I will be able to accomplish another one of my goals in life and that is to fight the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. This is a huge challenge for me personally and professionally."

But though Bradley and Pacquiao have been nothing but pleasant to each other in the press conferences and interviews leading up to the June 9 (June 10, PHL time) bout, Bradley is not about to take his opponent lightly.

"It feels great to get the fight with Manny Pacquiao," Bradley said. "It's going to feel even better when I beat him. You can take that to the bank."

Bradley had appeared on the undercard of last November's Pacquiao versus Juan Manuel Marquez fight, wherein he defended his WBO Light Welterweight title versus Joel Casamayor through TKO.

He had previously been criticized for refusing to fight WBA Light Welterweight champion Amir Khan, who actually trained with Pacquiao in Baguio.

"When the Amir Khan world title unification fight was presented I was determined not to be pushed into it," Bradley said, defending his decision. "It was a business decision. And if there's one thing I have learned as a professional boxer it's this, sometimes the deal you don't make is the best deal you make."

The Pacquiao-Bradley bout will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. - AMD, GMA News
