VIDEO: Google Wave Gets Explained

We’re really excited about Google Wave and its potential to change the web. Still, understanding what Wave is all about — and why you should use it — can be difficult to grasp (even with Ben Parr’s excellent Google Wave Guide).

That’s why we’re big fans of this video from Epipheo Studios. It really explains, in a very straightforward and entertaining way, what Google Wave is and why it is worthy of all the hype it has received. Here’s the YouTube video:

Excited? The next step, of course, is to procure an invite. There’s even a website dedicated to the cause. Once you’re in — be sure to follow Ben’s excellent Getting Started guide.

What do you think about the potential for Google Wave? If you’ve used Wave, what do you think? Let us know!

Google Wave has a Public Timeline, like Twitter

Listen, this is a pretty cool thing. Google Wave also has a public timeline, like twitter. It shows all wave created and updated if they are marked “public”, and this happens real-time. You can open these waves and join the conversation. To access it, all you need to do is, type “with:public” without quotes, in to the search bar.

Google Wave Public Timeline

One day after the beta account invites were sent out to thousands of users for preview, the wave public timeline is full of people excited about their new wave accounts. I can see new waves appearing every second.

If you’d like to make the contents of a wave public, add public@a.googlewave.com as a participant. This will let you publish the wave on blogposts etc. This may bring the wave in the public timeline. If that is not working, Add public@a.gwave.com as a contact from your contacts menu, and then add it as a user on the wave. This will publish wave to with:public timeline.

Trends on Public Timeline, Day two.

Find More People: The basic trend on wave now is simple. People need to know more wave users to connect to, so that they can actually try using wave. A wave account is useless if you do not know anyone else without a wave account. People are trying to find wave users from their geographical area, or their country. I saw a wave for people testing the upcoming version of ubuntu, 9.10 ( Karmic ).

Collect Information: See titles of few popular public waves, or wave groups : ” Anything About Photography” “Game Design Wave Group”, These waves are edited by many people, adding links and information about specific topics. Something similar to wikipedia ?

Advertising and Social Media Networking: People are creating waves to advertise their blog, or lets not call it advertising, but social media marketing using google wave ? I could see a wave with 99 responses, with the title, Public Wave of Mashable.com ( mashable is a popular social media blog )

The Best Part, Public Waves are searchable.

Yes, the best part about public waves, or wave groups, as some call it is, it can be searched. Type in with:public followed by your search term, and you will find waves with that keyword. In future. this will be a huge source of information, and also an revenue source for google, through advertising.

Google Wave is evolving in many new ways and forms, that is with only few thousands of users, and this is second day. I am excited !!

HOW TO: Get Started with Google Wave

Google Wave has arrived. The real-time communication platform has been one of the hottest and most anticipated products in the tech and social media space for months. Soon around 100,000 people will be messaging each other in one of Google’s most ambitious projects to date.

So what if you’re one of the lucky ones to get an invite, or just want to understand exactly how this new tool works? While we cover the basics in our Google Wave Guide and have explored its game-changing features, we haven’t really written about exactly how to use Google Wave and how to navigate it.

So that’s exactly what we did. While not comprehensive, our guide on getting started with Google Wave will help you quickly learn the interface and important keyboard commands that will open up the full potential of Wave. Don’t forget to check out our extensive Google Wave coverage when you’re done for more tips and insight.

General Interface

The Google Wave interface is divided essentially into four boxes: Navigation, Contacts, Inbox, and your current Wave. Here’s a rundown of each of these core pieces of Wave:

Navigation: This is not your standard left-hand navigation bar. Yes, it has similarities to Gmail, but navigating Wave is definitely a new experience. Each of the items essentially filters your inbox for waves that fit what you’re looking for. “Active” refers to waves that have new activity, “History” checks for old, archived waves, and “Settings” lets you manage things like your extensions. You can also add custom searches (i.e. waves that discuss your company) and add folders. Adding a wave to a folder is as simple as drag-and-drop.

Contacts: Your contacts are more prominent in Wave. That’s because you drag and drop them to add them to waves, rather than type in an email address or a username. You can search through your contacts and manage them via your Google account. It’s still a bit buggy – Wave will tell you some people don’t have accounts when they do – but overall it’s smooth.

Inbox: The inbox in the middle of the Google Wave interface doesn’t work like an email inbox. The key to navigating the inbox are search and search commands. It’s the easiest way to filter different waves. We have a list of key search commands below.

Wave Box: This is the box on the right hand of Wave. This is where conversations happen. Add participants, discuss what you’d like, and add multimedia through Google Wave gadgets and extensions (for more on Wave Extensions, check out Google Wave Extensions: An Inside Look).

This is the pure overview of the interface. However, if you want to learn more about the features and the terminology, we suggest checking out Google Wave: A Complete Guide. Google also created a quick YouTube video tutorial of Wave, courtesy of Wave’s mascot, Dr. Wave:

Starting a Conversation

Getting a conversation started in Google Wave is rather easy – it’s understanding all of the available conversation features that’s difficult. Let’s explore a few steps to get started with a new wave:

1. Click on the “New Wave” link. This will start a new conversation.

2. Drag and drop friends you’d like to have join your wave from your contacts box into the top of the wave.

3. Start typing.

Remember, Wave is different than email. You can reply to messages as threaded conversations and, more importantly, you can edit the text of anyone in the conversation. These options become available when you click on the downward facing arrow at the top of any message (a blip) within a wave.

Also note the top bar, with “Reply,” “Playback,” “Archive,” “Mute,” “Spam,” and “Read.” While most of these are self-explanatory, the feature you should be using liberally is “playback.” If you join a wave in progress, always start by playing back the wave to see how the conversation transpired.

Wave Search Commands

A big part of navigating through your Wave inbox are the search commands. They help you find public waves, your archived messages, or just waves related to work. Here are some of the most important commands to keep in mind:

is:read and is:unread: This will help you find all of the waves you have or have not read. is:active is the same as is:unread currently.

is:mute and is:unmute: The same type of deal – This helps you find conversations you may have muted or unmuted.

title:(keyword): This command helps you find waves with a specific word in their titles.

caption:(keyword): This helps you find waves with a keyword in the captions of attached images and files.

from:(address): This command will help you find waves from specific people. On the same token, from:me finds waves from you. to:(address) finds waves where it’s just you and the person you’re searching for.

past:(date), previous:(date), after:(date), and before:(date): These four commands help you search for waves in time periods, based on days, weeks, months, and years. Use “d” for day, “w” for week, “m” for month, and “y” for year. So, if you want to find something from before 3 months ago, you’d type “before:3m”. Yes, it’s complicated.

has: The has command will search for whether a wave has an attachment, a document, an image, or even a gadget (has:gadget).

There are actually a lot more commands. To read them all, we suggested checking out Google Wave’s advanced search terms list.

Wave Navigation

There are an abundance of keyboard shortcuts that make using Google Wave a more streamlined experience. Thanks to a list first created by Google’s Greg Dalesandre in the development version of Google Wave, we can bring you a full list of keyboard shortcuts, which we’ll update periodically.

First, here are the commands for Wave Navigation:

Up/Down Arrows: As you might expect, use the arrows to navigate messages.

Tab/Shift-tab: Same functionality as the Up/Down arrows (outside of edit mode).

Home/End: Moves you to the first or last message.

Space: Go to next unread message (note: it doesn’t have to be within the same wave).

Left/Right Arrows: Switch focus between digest panel and wave panel.

Page Up/Down: Currently doesn’t work properly due to a bug.

Ctrl-Space: Marks all messages as read.

Messages in Wave

Enter: Replies to messages. Your reply will appear just below the selected message. If it’s the first reply, it will not be indented (but otherwise it will be).

Ctrl-R: The same as enter.

Shift-Enter: Replies to messages at the end of a thread. Replies of this nature appear at the bottom with the same indentation in almost all cases.

Highlight Text + Enter: Creates an inline reply. Your reply will be indented inside the current message.

Ctrl-E: Edit a message.

Ctrl-Enter (while editing): Inserts an inline reply at the caret.

Text Editing

None of these commands will really come as a shock, but they’re still good to know.

Ctrl-B: Bolds text.

Ctrl-I: Italicizes text.

Ctrl-G: Adjust the color.

Ctrl-L: Currently links to another wave if you hightlight the text and put in the URL or Wave ID, but the keyboard shortcut will be changing soon according to Google.

Ctrl-C: Copies text.

Ctrl-X: Cuts text.

Ctrl-V: Pastes text.

Structural Formatting

Once again, not too many surprises here:

Ctrl-<#>: Changes the current line to a different-sized heading – 1 is biggest, 4 is smallest.

Ctrl-5: Adds bullets.

Ctrl-6: Normalizes text/removes bullets and headings. Does not remove italics, bold, or text edits.

Ctrl-7: Left alignment.

Ctrl-8: Right alignment.

Much, Much More to Come

Google Wave is far from a complete product. They will add new features, tweak the interface, and change entire chunks of it based on user feedback and the data they gather from this initial release. Because of that, we will continue to add to this guide and tweak it. It’s also why we suggest staying tuned to our Google Wave coverage for the many updates that are coming.

Google Wave Bids Ripped from eBay in Failed Pay-to-Play Move

So let me get this straight: People bid hundreds or even thousands of dollars for the chance to use software that will help them do instant messaging, social networking and file sharing from one location?

But that's exactly the case, according to the Wall Street Journal, which found a blogger from Baltimore who tried to auction his Wave invite on eBay.

Google yesterday rolled out 100,000 invites for its real-time Wave collaboration platform, which as I noted puts your basic collaboration tools in a not-so-basic configuraton: one fat palette where you can communicate and share content with friends, family and colleagues.

It's a neat tool, but who the hell would pay for something Google will eventually release free to everyone if all goes well?

The WSJ story is behind the paywall, but no worries, here are the details.

Hagan Blount, who didn't even have an invite, kicked off an auction for his Wave bid on Tuesday night. By the time he rose Wednesday, the Wave extended preview day, his auction had received 12,000 hits. The WSJ's Marisa Taylor noted:

As the day wore on, he received about 33 bids for the Google Wave invite, with the winning bid reaching $157. One eBay user tried to set up two accounts and entered a bid for $5,000, which Mr. Blount quickly deleted. Dozens of questions piled up in his eBay account inbox, asking him if the Wave invite was real, and if so, whether it could be purchased on the spot. One man from Sweden offered $700 to buy it outright, and another who identified himself as "a businessman" said he would pony up $27,000 if the invite was authentic.

That's insanity. eBay's computers apparently agreed, sending an automated message saying that he was violating the site's terms of service by trying to sell an item without owning the copyright.

Blount removed the auction, but others are popping up.

The precedent as far as Google is concerned goes back to the Gmail launch in 2004, and I know some tried to sell their Google Voice invites.

This is crazy. Unless you know a whole bunch of people who are already using Wave, and this is extremely unlikely except for Googlers, their friends and the digerati covering them, it makes absolutely no sense to pay to play for Wave.

You can't Wave with people who don't have it, so unless those people procure invites to install Wave, what's the point?

Am I missing something? Besides an invite to Wave? Grrrrrrr.

Need a Google Wave invite? Be patient… or dress up

Invites to try Google Wave, the revolutionary real-time communication and collaboration tool, started going out around ten hours ago. If you haven’t got one yet, be patient – you might still be lucky.

Around the time Google flicked the switch on the invites, one of the team behind the launch tweeted “Wave invites starting … will take many many many many hours to get them all out! We are so very grateful for all the interest!!”

How many is “many many many many”? Who knows, but it does indicate that all the 100,000 Wave invites may not yet have been delivered. A Twitter search for “got my Google Wave invite” shows that people are still receiving them now. So – be patient!

Just to be clear – if you receive an invite from a friend you will not get invites too. Only people who get their invite from Google get to share the Wavey goodness.

If you’re in Sydney, Australia, you have another way to get hold of an invite – dressing up. Google’s ‘mascot’ for Wave is Doctor Wave. He will be appearing in the city’s Pyrmont Bay Park at 1pm tomorrow. In a tweet earlier today Doctor Wave said “Best “wave” outfits get Google Wave invitations! Be creative!”.

So, if you can’t get an invite and can’t get to Sydney dressed up as a Wave you’ll have to sit tight. Don’t worry, you’re not alone! In the meantime, here’s Doctor Wave himself in action. We’re told the video works a lot better if you watch it within Wave!

Webcam Video Chat and Much More on Google Wave with 6rounds

6rounds is a featured Google Wave Extension for Video Chat and Collaboration. It lets you chat with your friends using webcam, and do many other things together, real time.

With Google Wave + 6rounds, you can

Chat

View friends’ webcam

Play games together

Edit Documents together

Watch the same video together

Browse together

Browse Facebook together

What is Real-Time C0llaboration

All this happen, real-time. If you are unsure of what “real-time” collaboration is, let me explain that real quick.

A collaborative editor is a software application that allows several people to edit a computer file using different computers. There are two types of collaborative editors, real-time and non-real-time. Real-time collaborative editors allow users to edit the same file at the same time. ( wikipedia )

So, when you say watch one video, in real-time, you are watching the same video, on two different computers, two different locations. Suppose you pause the video on your computer, same will happen on your friend’s computer too. Your friend can see every mouse movement every click you make.

If you are browsing the web together, real-time again, you are opening the same page at the same time, viewing the same page, same image, etc, and you are sharing the browser with your friend or “collaborator”.

6rounds is in private beta right now. I got an account yesterday, and I am waiting for my google wave account to test this. Wait for more on this ….

AmazonBot google wave extension and gadget

Just released the WithWaves AmazonBot – a Google Wave robot and gadget – which enable social product research and shopping on Amazon.com.

Wave participants can share products & reviews with contacts in real-time thanks to automatic queries by the AmazonBot against conversation keywords. The AmazonBot gadget can detect products and return inline product links or a custom full product browser.

Install the AmazonBot robot & gadget

Installing both the AmazonBot robot & gadget is a one-step process. Simply add a new Wave participant and enter the following contact:

amazon-withwaves@appspot.com

Once added as a conversation participant, the AmazonBot robot will listen and automatically convert identifiable product names into Amazon product links.

How-to search Amazon

To initiate a specific product search, simply type the following at any time into your Wave conversation:

amazon: keywords

AmazonBot will reply and insert a product browsing gadget which will be shared amongst all conversation members.

Install AmazonBot Gadget only

In order to install the AmazonBot Gadget (sans robot and auto links for products), create a new message and select the Insert Gadget feature. Enter the following URL for “Enter the URL for a gadget you want to add” in the “Add by XML” field:

http://gadgets.withwaves.com/amazon

Afterward, all Wave participants can shop as one – or window shop as one.

The gadget is also available as an extension installer so people can use it in other waves. We encourage you to offer this option to audiences that may benefit from Amazon product searches. Simply add this extension installer in Waves where there might be audiences interested in Amazon products.

http://gadgets.withwaves.com/installer/amazon/manifest.xml

Each participant will then be able to add the Amazon gadget to any other waves of their own using a handy shortcut next to the Insert Gadget feature.

Google Offers Caveats, Teaser For Google Wave Preview

Google will make its Google Wave real-time collaboration platform available to 100,000 more people beginning tomorrow in what the company is calling an "extended preview."

As I noted over the weekend, Wave has been tested internally by thousands of Googlers and externally by thousands of developers. These folks have been poking and prodding it to flesh out the soft spots in the code.

Lars Rasmussen in a blog post today previewed the extended preview, noting the 100,000 new invites will go to:

Developers who have been active in the developer preview we started back in June.

The first users who signed up and offered to give feedback on wave.google.com.

Select customers of Google Apps.

Rasmussen said Google will ask some early users to nominate people they know also to receive early invitations, noting that Google Wave is more useful if your friends, family and colleagues have it too. If this catches on, Google will invite "many more" to try out Google Wave. ReadWriteWeb has more on the invitation process here.

This makes sense. I signed up to test Wave back in June, just two weeks after Google launched Wave at I/O, so I hope to get an invite. But I need to have people to use it with, or the invite is moot. Wave only works when you have several people on it, or else it's just instant messaging with file-sharing.

It's also not the way people are used to communicating and collaborating, so most people will need to have their hands held to varying degrees.

Ramussen added this caveat and clarification about what he means by "preview":

Some of you have asked what we mean by preview. This just means that Google Wave isn't quite ready for prime time. Not yet, anyway. Since first unveiling the project back in May, we've focused almost exclusively on scalability, stability, speed and usability. Yet, you will still experience the occasional downtime, a crash every now and then, part of the system being a bit sluggish and some of the user interface being, well, quirky.

Very true. Wave Creators Lars and Jens Rasmussen provided a demo for myself and other journalists back in July and the platform stalled quite a bit, freezing my browser, particularly when I tried to access photos or files.

Rasmussen also offered a teaser, noting that he and his team have yet to implement certain key features.

For example, you can't yet remove a participant from a wave or define groups of users, draft mode is still missing and you can't configure the permissions of users on a wave. We'll be rolling out these and other features as soon as they are ready -- over the next few months.

Rasmussen also praised the the thousands of developers who have patiently taken part in our ongoing developer preview. BT's Ribbit team, for example, has created some Wave gadgets, which I expect to see in action tomorrow.

Net-net, tomorrow's launch is big for Google in the sense that it has to be able to support the glut of new Wave users with its infrastructure. The users also have to have a comfortable waving experience, or the beta build won't blossom.

Google also took another major step in getting Wave ready for broader adoption Sept. 22 when it launched Google Chrome Frame, an open-source plug-in that enables Chrome's Webkit rendering engine to run in Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

I will be very interested to see how many users bother to install Chrome Frame; instructions for installing it to use Wave are here.

I'm rooting for Wave, because I think this is where the many-to-many collaboration model needs to go -- into real-time for the future.

What happened in the Wave sandbox

My favorite day since we started the developer preview at Google I/O? Aug 7th. Alexander Dreiling flew down to visit the Wave team from SAP's research lab in Brisbane. He showed us a 7 min video of Gravity, a Google Wave extension that facilitates real-time, collaborative development of business processes. I never thought I'd see grown men cry over business process modelling.

Why the tears? Alex, Kathrin Fleischmann (SAP Research) and Soeren Balko (SAP NetWeaver BPM development) built a demo that highlights the power of the Google Wave platform to make complex tools live and collaborative. In the video, many team members collaborate in real time to build a model. Each piece of the model is colored based on the person that added it. The team discusses the model. Someone adds another participant midway through the development. That person uses playback to catch up on what they missed. And there is even a robot that checks and fixes semantic errors. In the end, a manager checks the work on her iPhone. Even Lars was floored and he is not easily impressed!

<!--break-->

Salesforce.com also gave the team a virtual pat on the back when they sent over this video showing the Service Cloud's rich customer support experience in Google Wave. A mobile phone customer starts a wave with a company-supplied support robot. The robot creates a tracking record and pulls rich help content into the wave based on the customer's comments. When the problem isn't solved, the robot seamlessly brings the matter to the attention of a live agent, who can see the wave embedded in a familiar tool and interact with it there. Private replies let the agent consult colleagues before responding to the customer. All in a single wave.

Since Google I/O, more than 27,000 developers have been prototyping with the Google Wave APIs. Amazingly, these developers persevered, found work arounds, and advocated for new features when our APIs didn't do what they needed. Our APIs have made a fair bit of progress since May. Now you can build robots that control gadgets, providing a mechanism for tight integration with a rich UI. We've also made it easier to build extension installers to help people understand share extensions with their friends. The visual experience for interacting with gadgets has also been improved. We open sourced the Java Robots API. And made lots and lots of bug fixes.

While Salesforce.com and SAP's demos are still prototypes, we are featuring a small set of amazing extensions ready to use today. LabPixes created a Sudoku gadget that lets you compete to solve a Sudoku Puzzle. A happy distraction in the hectic days leading up to September 30th! (Although I wish Lars would let me win once in awhile...) 6Rounds.com has integrated their rich video conference experience into Google Wave. It has amazing effects like making it snow or even simulating fire! AccuWeather has built a neat extension that lets you add weather forecasts to your event planning waves. Voice conversation is one of Google Wave's most commonly requested features, and we were thrilled to see Ribbit's gadget for managing telephone conferences. Lonely Planet built a very rich trip planning tool. Our own Pamela Fox updated the Google Maps gadget we have been using in our demos.

As we've talked about in the past, we're still working hard to improve the documentation and evolve the preview quality APIs to make it easy to build wave-y extensions. We're also working on larger changes like providing anonymous read-only access to embedded waves -- so anyone in the world will be able to see content of published waves. To help foster a strong developer ecosystem, we're exploring plans for a monetizable wave extension store.

To all sandbox developers, thank you for your patience, feedback, creativity and riding the sometimes bumpy waves with us. You will get accounts on wave.google.com tomorrow - check your sandbox account for instructions on how to login. You'll also get invitations to bring on people you want to wave with or have try your extensions. Google Wave is more fun with friends or colleagues to collaborate with so use your invitations wisely!

If you're feeling inspired to build an extension to Google Wave, sign up to give the APIs a spin, check out the developer's guide, and read the design principles. If you come up with something "wave-y" don't forget to let us know when you have extensions ready for users to try.

‘Emoticony’ A Google Wave Plugin for adding Smielys and Emoticons

Emoticons for Google Wave

Can you imagine emails and chat messages without emitocons or smileys ? I can’t .. I even use them while chatting with customers and clients. When Google wave is released, we will start searching for cool smiles and emoticons for Wave conversations too. I started that search early and found a nice plugin for all of us !!

Emoticony Robot for Google Wave

Emoticony is a robot for Google Wave which replaces text representations of emoticons with the relevant image. There are currently over 50 different emoticons available, with this number continuing to grow. They are planning to release emoticons focused around specific events (Halloween, Christmas etc.)

In order to enable the plugin, all you need to do is, add emoticonbot@appspot.com to your wave. Enjoy ! For More Plugins, click here

Live Blogging With Google Wave, iDEA

Want to cover an event through Live Blogging ? Google Wave is all you need for Live blogging using Wordpress (or any other blogging or CMS platform like Drupal and Joomla ). Read on, to know how this can be done.

The Solution in Simple Words

Install a Wordpress Plugin that embeds Google Wave in to your Blogpost, and then publish your wave on your blog, and you are ready for the show ! Now all you need to do is updating the wave, which will automatically update your blog post, real time.

Now, Those Simple Steps

Find the right Google Wave Plugin for you. If you are using Wordpress, there are three plugins, wp-wave-shortcode, and wavepressthis. But the best wordpress plugin for Wave is, Wavr. It provides one click integration of Wave to Wordpress.

If you are using Drupal on your website, “Drupal Waves” plugin will help you embed waves to your webpages. Find the details about Drupal wave and 7 more useful google wave plugins here. If you are using Joomla, you can download the Joomla Wave Plugin from here.

After the plugin is installed and activated, all you need to do is embed a wave in your blog post, and start updating the wave, which will be updated on the blog as well, real time. People can read things while you are typing those words, you can share images, videos, etc, by simply adding them to wave. Your blog post or webpage with the wave will work like a charm, providing live streaming of the session you are covering !!

What do you think ?

ps: photo by Ben30
