Jackson Hole On Ice Weekend and Nashville Unplugged Gala
March 3 - 7, 2011

Join Spring Creek Ranch and the Jackson Hole Moose Hockey in supporting a great event benefiting the Jackson Hole Youth Hockey and the USA Warriors Hockey Program.

The On Ice Weekend is a unique fundraising event centered around the game of ice hockey. The goal of the On Ice Weekend is to favorably promote the game of hockey, foster new friendships, and support in the community of Jackson Hole. Check out the schedule of events on the On Ice Weekend Website.

The USA Warriors Ice Hockey Program has been organized to operate exclusively for charitable and educational purposes, for United States Military personnel wounded in defense of the United States in conjunction with the USA Disabled Hockey Program. The Program's mission is to organize and administer an ice hockey program that provides a recreational, therapeutic experience and education to its participants. Some of the program's purposes include, but are not limited to:

1. Encouraging the formation of ‘USA Warrior Hockey Programs' locally and nationally;
2. To educate, train, motivate and encourage, individuals who have physical disabilities incurred during service to the United States, to participate in the sport of ice hockey in an environment that is adapted to the level of ability of the participating athletes;
3. To integrate people with disabilities with people without disabilities in order to promote awareness of challenges and to encourage team building;
4. To use the game of hockey to assist individuals with disabilities in developing self-confidence, adjusting to their new lifestyle, rehabilitation, self-reliance, concentration, and to assist in helping participants back into mainstream lifestyles they were accustomed to prior to their disability, that will help the individual be more successful both within and outside a hockey environment;
5. To educate and encourage the general public about disability sports and the USA Warriors Ice Hockey Program in particular and to promote societal awareness of the sacrifices participants made in defense of our nation.

Thursday March 3, 2011 - Players Reception. Join us to meet and get to know the players that will take on the Moose Hockey team. Tickets are $25/person, Spring Creek Ranch, doors open at 7 pm.
Friday March 4, 2011 - Wild West Hockey Game at Snow King Arena. Tickets are $10/person at the door, game kicks off at 7pm.
Saturday March 5, 2010 - Nashville Unplugged Evening. Tickets are $150/person, Spring Creek Ranch, evening begins at 6 pm. Silent auction and performances by Bobby Pinson, James Dean Hicks, David Vincent Williams, and Tim Johnson.

Elk Antler Auction Hits the Streets of Jackson Hole

Come to Jackson Hole this May and enjoy the beginning of summer and the great events that we have to offer. May 22 and 23rd is the 43rd annual World Famous Jackson Hole Boy Scouts Elk Antler Auction. An exciting time for celebrating nature, outdoor skills, hunting and ecological education and awareness.

Every spring, thousands of elk wintering on the National Elk Refuge lose their antlers before they migrate to their summer range. The Boy Scouts assist the Refuge with harvesting the shed antlers and auction them to bidders from around the world who make furniture, wall decorations, jewelry and food products from them.

This annual event, which includes a Chili Cook-Off with live musical performances, and the kick-off of a Mountain Man Rendezvous and an Antler Rendezvous, supports the winter feeding program on the National Elk Refuge with 80% of auction proceeds going back to the Refuge.

Spring Time in Jackson Hole

Spring is coming to Jackson Hole and the ice fishing is all but over. While ice is still present on most lakes in the area, the rivers are flowing and the river access ramps are open and it's time to put away the ice rods for my favorite fly rod. I got the boat out of storage last week and headed over to Idaho to see how the South Fork of the Snake was fishing. The sun warmed up the water in the afternoon and the fishing improved. All in all a great day on the river. This weekend will be the Snake River in Jackson. Keep you posted on what happens. Get out there and wet a line. You can stop by Snake River Angler to grab your license and flys before heading out. See ya on the water!

Snowmobiling Adventures abound in Jackson Hole Area

Last weekend we found plenty of snow on and off the groomed trails! This trip we explored the trails of the Salt Creek Pass as did several other enthusiasts! We enjoyed a few signs of spring along the way on our fifty-seven mile round trip day and we loved every minute! We stopped in a cabin that is perched on the top of one of the buttes that was built for snowmobilers to get warm and enjoy a quick meal before heading back out.

We are very fortunate to live where we do and we respect the beauty of the land for those who will come after us.

A Great Day Skiing at Snow King Mountain

The time was about noon on Sunday and we decided to get in an afternoon ski at Snow King Mountain - The Town Ski Area - know to the locals as "THE KING" !! I was skiing with my son Caleb - 14 yrs old who has been skiing since he was 2 yrs old and thus is always waiting at the bottom for me after each run. After riding the Summit Chairlift to the top of The KING - we took some time to check out the awesome views of the Teton Mountain Range and some of the other surrounding mountains - what a bonus to skiing at The KING !! The weather was sunny & clear with temperatures in the upper 20's. We skied one of our favorites; "Belly Roll Trail" - A Black Diamond Run which rolls down the mountain with plenty of moguls. We also skied "Elk and Grizzly Trails" from the top which offers great views of the town of Jackson with the Tetons in the background - these runs were skiing super.

Snow King Mountain also offers some other winter activities which include the Tube Park, Night Skiing and a Indoor Ice Rink with Public Skating and the Home of the Jackson Hole Moose Hockey Team. Snow King Mountain recently hosted members from The USA and French Olympic Ski Teams for some ski race training before headed to 2010 Winter Game in Vancouver. Blue skies & sunshine ruled a wonderful Valentine’s Day at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. With 9” of new snow in the last 2 days, the skiing just keeps getting better. Cold overnight temperatures—combined with yesterday’s wind—left the snow soft & smooth for everyone who made skiing a part of their Valentine’s Day celebration. Today was an exceptional day to explore both the freshly groomed trails & wind-buffed powder leftover from Friday night’s storm.

Snow is in the forecast again for tonight & President’s Day Monday, so if you aren’t all ready here, pack up your ski gear & get on out to Jackson Hole.

Cutter Races Benefit Schriners Hospital

Over the Valentines day weekend, Jackson Hole played host to the annual Cutter Races to benefit the Shriners Hospital. This event always draws a huge local crowd as well as spectators and teams from the surrounding states of Utah, Idaho and Montana. The Races took place Saturday and Sunday at Melody Ranch just south of town. All proceeds from both entry fees, and calcutta betting goes to the Shriners Hospital. The Cutter races are an exciting western version of horse-drawn chariot races. Cowboys roar past the cheering crowd in chariots, pulled by a team of two thoroughbreds. Two teams go head to head down a quarter mile snow covered track. The action is fast paced and exciting. This event demonstrates how Jackson Hole as a community can rally around a fun event to raise money to help out the Shriners Children's Hospital.

Wildlife Safaris in Jackson Hole

Looking out the window today the snow is falling and I found myself thinking of spring. One thought that stuck in my head was last April when I went with our Naturalist, Kurt Johnson on a Dawn Wildlife Safari. We went out past the National Elk Refuge, to Kelly and around the loop to the National Museum of Wildlife Art, then back to Spring Creek Ranch. The wildlife were out in numbers, we photographed Bison, Elk, Moose, Mule Deer and Bighorn Sheep. The birds were also returning to Jackson Hole. We saw thirteen varieties of birds including: Trumpeter Swans, Red Tailed Hawks, Mallard Ducks, Bald Eagles, Canada Geese, and an American Kestrel.

My favorite bird was the little American Kestrel. Not much bigger than a Robin, this bird inhabits our valley between April and September. We saw it at the art museum perched on one of the rock ledges eating a mouse. These birds don't usually eat anything bigger than a grasshopper, so this was a major score. We tried not to scare it away, so this picture was taken with a telephoto lens. What a magnificent little bird! These animals and birds are all out there just waiting to be seen and photographed.

Living in Jackson Hole is such a pleasure; everyday is an adventure and you never know what the next day will bring. From the abundant wildlife to the majestic mountain ranges that surround us, Jackson Hole is truly "God's Country" and the gateway to our first National Park. Exploring both Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks is a dream of many and an experience not to be missed. We will be posting our experiences here on this blog, but I have also created a gallery to show everyone that you can see while here in Jackson and Spring Creek Ranch. Bedded Elk

Early afternoon, as I was winding down the road from Sprign Creek Ranch, I spotted the bull elk bedded down in the trees. While elk are plentiful in the Jackson Hole, finding them bedded in the trees is not that common mostly because they blend in so well. I wonder how many Spring Creek Ranch guests drove by without even noticing these guys about 100 yards from the road. These are the same bulls that have been wintering at Spring Creek Ranch. We thought they had moved on as they were seen on the ranch lands below the resort yesterday. But, today they are back. Perhaps, the views attract them - from this vantage point, they have a beautiful view of the Teton Mountains. Or, perhaps, they like the attention of folks like me stopping to take pictures. Regardless, we enjoy seeing them everyday.

Bald Eagle Surveys Jackson Hole

Just before the main entrance to Spring Creek Ranch, I spotted a Bald Eagle perched on a power pole. These majestic birds frequent the area around Spring Creek Ranch. Eagles and other raptors are often seen on posts or in trees or soaring above the Jackson Hole.

Skiing Brings out the Best Menu Ideas

Woke up this morning to at least twelve new inches of snow on my jeep! So of course I headed to the mountain after I dropped off my boy at school, and was not disappointed. I got on an early gondola, which I prefer over the tram for the simple reason of the various terrain getting over to the Thunder and Sublette chairs. The fresh tracks were amazing, getting nice shots even on the late groomed runs, waist deep in some spots with super light fluffy Teton powder. The routes I took were virgin, I was lucky enough to be up at the top of the gondola when the whistle blew for opening so I beat even the Tram to untracked stuff. The crowds were non existent this morning, and every face I saw had a smile. Bernies Bowl was the best it has ever been, Kissing Rock and Sugar Shack, Bird In Hand, Lower Liquor Cabinets, it was all mine! And of course, when I feel this good I start thinking about food and the Valentines Day menu, so it must have been time to go work, but I knew could still come out to play another day. The sun broke later after the morning fog burned off and the folks started to show up so I finished with the Hobacks and fresh lobster tails on my mind...maybe with a petite fillet on the side, with a little Bearnaise? I'm a little old fashioned when it comes to Valentines Day...

The Other Side of The Tetons - Grand Targhee Resort Powder Paradise

Yesterday, a few friends and I decided to drive over Teton Pass to ski at Grand Targhee Resort in Alta, Wyoming. It takes about an hour and a half to get to Grand Targhee with beautiful scenery the entire way. There are great inexpensive shuttle options if you do not have a car during your stay at Spring Creek Ranch. It was already snowing when we started the drive and continued to snow for the entire day. It was the lightest fluffiest snow you could imagine! Every run we did was amazing! The groomers had a few inches of new snow on top and the ungroomed runs were still pretty soft even though there hadn't been new snow in a few days! Grand Targhee is a great resort for families, those that are slightly intimidated by Jackson Hole Mountain Resort or those just looking for a change of scene. We finished off our day at the Trap Bar, which has a great Après Ski menu and lots of yummy drink specials. It was a great way to spend a Sunday!

Battle of the Bulls

Today, the bull elk of Spring Creek Ranch put on a show for anybody at the resort to see. This morning, the group of six bull elk that have been wintering on the wildlife refuge of Spring Creek Ranch were enjoying the early morning sun. One was looking regal on the ridge, others were foraging, and three were taking turns sparing. While bulls will often spar, it is a real treat to witness such an event. The one photo shows two bulls locking antlers and pushing against each other as another watches. At one point, all three were involved in the fray at the same time. Unfortunately, I wasn't quick enough with the camera to capture that moment. Perhaps, someone else will have that chance. Just another unbelievable day at Spring Creek Ranch in Jackson Hole.

Jackson Hole Bull Market

Spring Creek Ranch in Jackson Hole is experiencing a bull market - bull elk that is. The Amangani General Manager took this photo of four bulls just off the side of the main access road. A couple more are just out of the picture. The conditions are just right for them to forage and wander around the resort. As a wildlife refuge, Spring Creek Ranch just makes the animals and guests alike comfortable. I never get tired of watching these guys, and they don't mind being watched.
