Time to kick off this year for the SHGC! Our next meeting will be Saturday, February 9th beginning at 9 am in the Winchester Center. Onalee will be presenting our first topic of the year, "Growing Shitake Mushrooms". If you are interested in doing the project, you should have already received instructions from Rose via email. Otherwise, join us for an informative meeting. Also, don't forget that it's time to pay dues again. A real bargain at $10 individual/$15 couple for the year.

2012 Christmas Party

Wow! Can you believe it's already the end of the year? It's time for the SHGC Christmas party. It will be Saturday, December 8th at 10:00 a.m. Rose will be hosting it at her house. It will be potluck with the club providing the ham. We will be having Dirty Santa again this year. If you would like to participate, please bring a wrapped gift of $15 or less. As is our tradition of giving back to the community, we have chosen the Maury County Animal Shelter and The Hope House (Domestic Violence Shelter). Rose has sent out directions and items needed for the charities in her email. See you all there!!

2012 September 15th Meeting

I am really excited about sending this message regarding our meeting on Saturday, Sept. 15^th, at 9:00am. For this year's craft project, Dianne Hill and Mary Pogge will show us how to make garden “glass art” and “concrete leaves with a face”. They will be demonstrating the assembly process only because both projects require curing time and we wouldn’t be able to start/finish personal projects. She will provide handouts with project instructions.

The meeting will be at Dianne’s house (she had too many pieces to transport to the Center) and believes she will have enough seating for everyone but please bring a folding chair just in case it’s needed. Directions to Dianne's house have been sent out to the members.

Hope that everyone will join us for the May 12th meeting beginning at 9 am at the Winchester Center.
Our topic will be Vegetable Gardening 101. We will discuss getting your garden beds ready, followed by presentations by three of our Master Gardeners about growing some of the most popular vegetables-tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash/zucchini. We will have an open Q&A session and we are going to wrap it up by drawing for some great giveaways. Should be educational and fun!

Don't forget that this Saturday April 21st is our next Spring Hill Garden Club Meeting! David Cook will be offering us some great ideas for planting with Native Plants. It should be a great talk so don't miss it! We'll be at the Winchester Center at 9 AM.

Honey Bee Gardening Tips

I came across some tips to think about assisting one of nature's most productive and necessary insects: the honey bee. I would give credit where credit is due, but I'm not sure who gave these tips.
1. Choose flowers that produce nectar and pollen such as sunflowers, daisies, cosmos, zinnias, dahlias, foxglove, asters, marigolds, hyacinths, hollyhocks, corcuses, and geraniums. (My personal recommendation is Anise hyssop Agastache sp.)
2. Go easy on hybrid flowers. They are usually hybridized for certain characteristics such as color or flower form- not for nectar or pollen.
3. Blue, purple, orange and yellow flowers are most attractive to honey bees.
4. Provide successive blooming over the seasons.
5. Plant patches of flowers in close proximity to each other.
6. DON'T USE PESTICIDES! They are broad-spectrum and can kill the honey bee.
7. Don't water plants from above. It dilutes the pollen and nectar.
8. Bees are most active in the morning.

The meeting will be on March 17th at 9 a.m. We will be meeting at Leilani's home for a presentation on Landscape Design Principles followed by a garden tour. It's St. Patrick's Day, so wear your green or you may get pinched!:) It'll be a fun themed meeting. See ya'll there!

Since it’s St. Patrick’s Day let’s make it a fun meeting by wearing green (hats, vests, ties, etc.) and have Irish snacks to go along with the theme (if possible). Scones, Irish soda bread, bit of Irish cheesecake, or Irish cream cheesecake, are some desserts that come to mind. I will be happy to help with the snacks.

Come this Saturday and of course BE GREEN!

Our first meeting of 2012 will be this Saturday, February 11th at the Winchester Center. We'll start at 9:00 AM and will discuss the club's 2012 schedule. Dues will be payable at this time. Spring Hill Garden Club dues are $10 for a single membership and $15 for couples - for the year. Very reasonable!

Also below is a link to a short survey to gather input from club members about 2012. Please take a few minutes to fill it out before Friday so we can share the information with everyone on Saturday!

Our Spring Hill Garden Club Christmas Party will be 9:00 A.M. at the Winchester Center on December 10th. Ann is bringing the ham. Everyone else should bring a delicious food item for our potluck brunch!

There will also be a dirty Santa gift exchange. Please keep gifts somewhere between $10 to $15 and gender neutral! (Bill, John, Alan and Dave don't want pink garden gloves!)

The club will be donating to The Well this year for our charity. Please make all checks out to the Well.

Nashville Rose Society member Jim Harding has invited members of the SHGC to the NRS August meeting. It will be a demonstration of flower arranging. For any interested members it will be next Tuesday, August 2nd at Cheekwood at 7 p.m.
