How do you talk in front of your kids? »

A neighbor of ours has this really strange habit of talking in a loud voice even if the person she is talking to is just in front of her. What’s worse, she talks as if her kids are not there, listening to her.

I was looking out the window when I heard her a few hours ago, talking in her usual loud voice. She was telling another neighbor about another neighbor’s mentally handicapped kid. The kid is mentally retarded, is actually already in his late 20s, and is always naked inside their home. Our loud neighbor was telling everyone who would listen that she saw the kid playing with his penis. This she said in a vulgar way, the Tagalog word of “playing with his own penis” is really crude.

I almost turned away when something caught my attention. Her kids were in front of her listening! With all the cuss and crude words she used, I wonder if her kids even know half of what she’s saying. And if her kids are repeating the crude words she carelessly utters in front of them.

I remember my mom once uttered an indecent word in front of me. I repeated it to a classmate when a teacher overheard me. She immediately called my parents and told them about it. My mom was so ashamed and never repeated it again.

I wish parents are more careful when talking about sensitive topics in front of their kids. And careful in saying words that they don’t want their kids repeating in front of company.

Suicide is never an option. »

I won’t presume to know what these people were thinking but why suicide? There are so many other options to choose from. So many people out there are wishing for an extension of theirs. And yet these people commit suicide?

I just read in a local newspaper that a college student suffering from a bipolar disorder committed suicide in front of his webcam, for all the online people he’s hooked up with to see. According to the report, the kid announced his desire to end his life by 3am and proceeded to do just that… overdosed on medicine in front of his webcam. What a waste!

Suicide is never an option. There are so many people out there not given a chance to breathe one more day and yet some people are flaunting their desire to end their lives for no apparent reason. I know depression can trigger these things. But I do wish that friends and families of these suicidal people can spot it right away and help them recover.

A family member, a friend, a relative, someone close to you or just about anyone you know might be in dire need of help to get out of a suicide plan. I got these signs and symptoms of a person planning suicide from a medical web site. This will let you know…

What are the signs and symptoms for suicide?

Warning signs that an individual is imminently planning to kill themselves may include the person making a will, getting his or her affairs in order, suddenly visiting friends or family members (one last time), buying instruments of suicide like a gun, hose, rope or medications, a sudden and significant decline or improvement in mood, or writing a suicide note. Contrary to popular belief, many people who complete suicide do not tell any mental-health professional they plan to kill themselves in the months before they do so. If they communicate their plan to anyone, it is more likely to be someone with whom they are personally close, like a friend or family member.

Life should not be wasted like that. There is more to it than what you currently have, what you are surrounded at the moment.

When someone mentions suicide, even jokes about it, treat it seriously. It may be a hint to what that person is feeling, planning, for his life. It could be a hint as to the state of his mind. We never know that they are warning us of their plans to just do that, end their lives.

Suicide is never an option. Remember that.

Cold weather and the holidays »

All this cold weather does to me is make me hungry all the time! I told myself that I will try to limit my rice intake, specially at night. But look at me, still eating the same amount of rice at night. Aargh! My family does the same. We all need some appetite suppressant pills, I tell you. And then Christmas is just around the corner. You can imagine how much food will be served on dining tables of the houses we will go to. Good luck to my diet!

Joining memes »

I wonder why there is no Weekly Question from Teacher Julie yet. I normally get an email from her on Sunday mornings with the question of the week together with the link to her current post.

Joining memes is not really my thing. When it was still that popular, I was one of those who religiously post it. But these days, I only do when I feel like it. If you notice, this blog only joined Weekly Questions, Weekend Snapshot and Food Friday. I want the memes to be something related to family matters and home living which is what this blog is all about. There are other memes out there with the same theme I know but I am content with these 3. There are weeks when I don’t even participate, joining more memes would seem superficial.

Do you join memes a lot? What are those?

Exchange gifts »

My two sisters are asking for MP3 players for their Christmas gifts. In our family, it is our tradition to exchange gifts on Christmas eve. But to make sure that the recipient would like what he or she will receive, we list down what we would like to receive. It is up to the giver to choose from among the items on the list. That’s how we do it year after year.

I am still thinking of what I want so my list is still empty.

Opportunity you can’t pass up »

Business Opportunities are available to those who are determined enough to really make it. I learned that while reading a magazine article about those who made it big and they started when they were at the lowest point of their lives. It was a very inspiring article, something that made me think long and hard about my future.

A Texas Franchise of a Fast Food Business sounds great to me. That’s what I told my cousin who is in Texas and asking for a business he could go into. I told him that no matter if the economy is spiraling down or is at it’s peak, people every where will still eat. So a food business is one of the safest businesses one can get into with the condition of the economy now.

My sister and I were thinking about it as well. But we are more inclined to go into a canteen business. In a school or in an office. I will just have to look into an opportunity. I have some people I can contact about it but we’ll see. I want to be sure before I make a decision.

If you are interested in getting into business, check out Franchisegator.com now and what they can offer and help you with.

Manage your assets »

I have a friend whom you can say is financially free. I mean, he inherited a chunk of his money from his uncle who died without a wife or a child. He invested a portion of it well and it grew to three times its principal amount. Lucky guy!

When I talked to him a month ago, he was asking me about someone or a company who could help him manage his assets. Much like what Martin Sands do. The latter is an Asset Management company who helps individuals and other companies invest their assets or in other words, take care of it so as to double, triple or grow it even more. I told him that I do know anyone or a company who is into asset management. I know a friend who worked for an investments firm but I lost contact with her already. Besides, I doubt if it’s the same service he is looking for.

Why not try Martin Sands, I asked him? He is actually considering it. With the vast amount of fortune he has accumulated over the years, I really believe he needs help so as not to deplete it easily. Much like what Martin Sands can help him with.

Check out SandsBros.com now and see what I’ve been telling you all about.

Weekly Question: Sundays »

Weekly QuestionsHere is this week’s question… What are the special things that you look forward to every Sunday?

I love Sundays. This is the only day in the week that you will surely find the whole family together. Since my sister and my brother are both working and going to school on Saturdays, we only get to eat lunch and dinner together on Sundays. Sometimes we eat out.

This is the only thing I look forward to on Sundays. Spending time with the whole family.

What about you?

Note: I haven’t joined Weekly Questions in a while but I still want to answer past questions. I will be posting it later ;)
