Mothers are a wealth of information. As a woman, I’m not sure I’d be a fully-functioning adult without my mom’s guidance.

Mom schooled me on how to sneak overflowing shopping bags past my dad. She showed me how to make a charcuterie board and a perfect pan of brownies. I learned how to put on makeup, to look under the car before getting too close late at night, and to never show up empty-handed.

She made sure I understood that it’s important to stand up for yourself. Hell, she even taught me to put in a tampon (I’m still scarred for life from that one, btw).

My mom taught me a lot, but she left a few key things out. She never really told me what it’s like getting older.

You know when something smells like rotten eggs and you shove it in someone’s face saying, “This is disgusting!” It’s just mean! Which is why I can’t blame her for sparing me the stinky part of getting older.

Me? I’m not quite so gentle. I’m sharing these little-known tidbits about lessons to you under-30 ladies. Consider it a public service… just in case your mom tried to spare you the nose-crinkling reality, too.

10 Things Your Mother Didn’t Tell You About Getting Older

1. Chin hair – it’s not just for men.

We all had that aunt or teacher with the unruly chin hair. Mine was a college professor. My classmate and I often wondered, “How does that happen and why doesn’t someone tell her about the whiskers?”

Silly girls. It happens to everyone! We’re all over here worried about going grey, but that’s the least disturbing hair-related occurrence. These little chin hairs are prickly too. Legit whiskers. They just pop up overnight!

The reason no one told my professor about hers? I’m pretty sure it’s because her partner was the same age… neither one of them could see the damn things! Invest in a 10x mirror now.

2. Acne never goes away.

What’s a little chin hair? At least you age out of getting zits, right? Wrong.

Everyone’s skin is different, but I can at least tell you the acne gets less bad. It still happens though, and it tends to happen right before you have an event to attend or an important meeting.

When I’m particularly stressed, it manifests as those delightful cystic zits that don’t have the decency to be pop-able. Those are the WORST, aren’t they?!

Make sure to wash your face every night and don’t be cheap when it comes to moisturizer. It won’t be as bad as it was when you were 14. Hey, at least you aren’t dealing with the ever-so-sexy acne + braces combo anymore!

3. Everything hurts.

Let me preface this by saying that I have no regrets.

That’s me about to bite it.

After a lifetime of softball, roller derby, weightlifting, running, and whatever else I could get into, my shit hurts. After 30, I tore ligaments in my ankle and my ACL(s). Both of them. Even when I’m not doing major damage to my body, it just doesn’t recover like it used to.

This is not me telling you to stop working out. The opposite! It’s important to work out and stay in shape. Being fit will help you as you get older. Obviously, as women, it’s especially important to maintain muscle for bone health.

Maintaining healthy body weight is also really important for practical reasons. It makes life easier! I gained 20 lbs when we moved to San Diego 4 years ago and was blown away by how much harder the extra weight made activities that used to be simple. Jogging, climbing stairs, hiking, or just getting up and down.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bl80ZbQliq0/

4. Elbows sag. So do knees.

I knew the wrinkles were coming. True, I thought I’d be a 35-year old unicorn who didn’t have them. They came, and they arrived before 35. What I really wasn’t prepared for was elbow wrinkles.

Saggy skin is for plump little church ladies! False. Saggy elbow skin is for people who are over 30. It doesn’t matter how fit or thin you are, it’s going to happen. It’s also going to happen to your knees.

I once read that Demi Moore had surgery to correct saggy knees. I get it now. Not that I would go that far. I draw the line at Botox.

Side note: I googled saggy knee surgery and was horrified at the way tabloids made fun of so many gorgeous women’s knees. Not cool. Let’s all do ourselves a favor and embrace the inevitable. Which brings me to the final point…

5. You quit caring.

This is actually a good thing in my mind. When I have something to say, I just say it. I don’t worry about pissing people off. I don’t have the patience for stupidity or people who are just exhausting. Writing this, I realized I haven’t stepped on a scale in weeks.

True, I’m not as lean as I once was. When I wake up in the morning, I look 50. My chin hairs sometimes stick Vegas when I snuggle up to her. My knees crack when I walk up the stairs.

But I could give two shits. I’m more content than ever. With age comes the realization that stressing over bad hair days, skinny jeans that won’t button, and spending time with people that I don’t even like… it isn’t worth it.

Life is short. If you don’t like something, you aren’t happy where you are, or you’re just too tired to sit in the bathroom trying to perfect cat-eye liner, I have good news for you.

You’re a grown-ass woman and you can leave.

The 5-day weather forecast is predicting rain on Tuesday in Atlanta. I said to Vegas “I can’t believe it’s going to rain on Election Day. It’s going to hurt the turnout! At least it won’t be too cold.”

Think about it. The WEATHER could negatively impact voter turnout. A little rain – in a state where the Governer’s race is tied – might deter people from coming out to vote. That’s ridiculous.

Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, left, with Oprah Winfrey — the biggest celebrity to barnstorm the state during a much-watched campaign — at a rally in Marietta on Thursday.

Less than 100 years ago, women were not allowed to vote. Less than 150 years ago, African American men didn’t have the right to vote.

In 2018, some people won’t come out because of the weather. Or because their vote “won’t count.” Or they just “ran out of time.” You’re not the only one wrestling a job, the clock, the weather, traffic, kids… it’s not an excuse. This is ONE day. One hour (maybe two…) in one day. You’ve blown more time scrolling through your Facebook feed than it will take you to go vote.

Blue wave hair

You have a civic duty to vote. Don’t be apathetic or lazy. This is your time to have input about who will represent what you stand for. People fought to the death to have the right to vote. My own Representative John Lewis’ skull was cracked 53 years ago in Selma while he was marching for civil rights; to be allowed to exercise his right to vote.

Look at what is going on around you. Last week, 15 people died because of hate crimes. The shooters were domestic terrorists, not immigrants from caravans.

What did you want to be when you grew up? At 8 years old, I wanted to play for the Atlanta Braves. When I told my dad about my career goal, he laughed and said, “you have the wrong equipment.”

There are a lot of reasons why I would never make it to the majors. I’m not particularly gifted athletically being reason #1. My dad chose to call out my gender. This is especially odd because he had 3 daughters. I was never told I couldn’t do something academically. In fact, he often pushed me harder than I wanted to be pushed to do well in school (thankfully). But, there were some things I just wasn’t able to do because I was a girl.

Being a girl shouldn’t be disqualifying. One day, there will be a little girl that grows up and makes it to the professional baseball mainstage. There have already been a few to come close.

16-year-old French shortstop prospect Melissa Mayeux takes part in the 2015 European Elite Camp.https://t.co/52OK2Z3jm4

— MLB (@MLB) August 4, 2015

Actually, in 1922 there was one – Lizzy Murphy. She played first base for 17 years. Lizzy’s career batting average is .300. (That’s a great average. For comparison, Chipper Jones’ career average is .303.)

My dad wasn’t a bad man. He was a great man. He was also a product of society. I would love to hear a story about a time when a man was told he couldn’t do something because he had “the wrong equipment.”

Athletic ability aside, women also cannot “get away” with the behavior that men can. If Hillary Clinton, for example, had broken down as Brett Kavanaugh did during her hearings… can you imagine what people would have said? I can. Women are too emotional for public office. She’s an angry woman. She’s shrill. She doesn’t have the stamina, the poise… the list could go on and on.

Or what about her appearance? I saw a comment on a Facebook post about Justice Ginsberg the other day where someone commented: “she’s so ugly.” The commenter WAS A WOMAN!!! Do you think anyone has ever discussed how Kavanaugh’s expression looks like he just had Trump’s mushroom dick in his mouth? NO.

Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh gives his opening statement before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018, on Capitol Hill in Washington. (Saul Loeb/Pool Image via AP)

That’s because the appearance of men isn’t a qualifier. Their demeanor doesn’t matter. Their past behavior isn’t a consideration. Which would be fine… if the same rules applied to everyone. (And if he hadn’t perjured himself, but that’s another post.)

Before you protest, think about the comments you’ve made about men and women in your life. Where a woman is a slut, a man is a pimp. A woman is a bitch; a man is aggressive. A woman is loud; a man is proud. A woman is pushy; a man is a “go-getter.” I could go on for days.

The unequal playing field is SO pronounced that Trump actually declared it’s “a scary time for young men in America.”

Riiiiiight.

Rather than go on about how ridiculous that is, I’d encourage you to listen to this song by Lynzy Lab Stewart titled “A Scary Time.”

To the men who really think this is a “scary time” – fuck off. Seriously. Walk down the street tomorrow and appreciate the fact that you do so without having to look over your shoulder. Have a drink at a bar without taking extra care not to leave it unattended. Look at the vast majority of people in leadership positions in this world, and appreciate that they have the right “equipment” … just like you.

The next time you think a woman doesn’t have a right to be wherever you are, consider your reasoning. Does she lack the skill, or does she just lack the “equipment” for the role?

[Tweet “Does she lack the skill or does she lack the “equipment” for the role? #equality #feminist”]

***

Before I get hater-ade dumped all over me, let me be clear. I like men. Some of my favorite people possess eggplant-esque equipment. Don’t call me a man-hating lesbian. I’m a patriarchy-hating lesbian. Get it right.

I was in Italy – in Verona – at a little cafe. My friend and I looked around and saw everyone drinking these beautiful coral-colored fizzy things. The waiter told us it was an Aperol Spritz, and that meeting friends after work for one is an Italian tradition.

I ordered one (when in Rome) and immediately fell in love. This drink is as delicious as it is refreshing. It’s low in alcohol, making it the perfect pre-dinner drink! What’s even better is that, in Italy, they always bring a little snack with your beverage. If you’re really lucky, that snack includes fresh bread and prosciutto.

I’m another year older.

With birthdays like this one, I don’t mind one bit!

Vegas surprised me with a birthday trip filled with my favorite things: food, wine, and outdoor adventures. We started in Sonoma/Napa for a few days of wine, then moved to Lake Tahoe for a week of hiking and kayaking.

Also during this time, I discovered that my blog was broken and I couldn’t post anything. That what there hasn’t been at WIAW or anything new for 3 weeks. It’s still half broken… always something. *eye roll*

I’ll do a full Tahoe hiking post later. Since it’s WIAW, I thought this one would be food-focused.

It’s hard to choose favorites, but dinner at Single Thread in Sonoma was unforgettable. It has two Michelin stars and was just given the Miele One to Watch Award.

The entire meal deserves its own post (which I’ll eventually get around to). For now, here is one of my favorite shots from the evening: the sushi-themed “garden” at the beginning of the meal.

Now time for the first #WIAW in a couple of weeks. This is from the birthday vacation gluttony. #sorryimnotsorry

Breakfast:

We travel with the ingredients for our morning cocktails. The addiction is real.

We were in a condo in Tahoe, so we had a kitchen to make breakfast in. While I love brunch, this is much more convenient. After a 9 mile hike the day before, I woke up starving!

Lunch:

We are NOT morning people, so breakfast is more like lunch. That means lunch was more like happy hour. Wine and cheese on a boat.

After a solo hike that was basically uphill, I was housing some cheese. Check out my hiking scenery though!

I happened upon the coolest cruise – Tahoe Tastings. It’s a sunset wine tasting on a 1953 Chris Craft Venetian Water Taxi. Over the course of 2 hours, you get 8 wine tastings, along with a gorgeous ride around Lake Tahoe. You can BYO snacks, so we have a healthy helping of crackers, cheese, and prosciutto.

Dinner:

Dinner was a leftover homecooked dish. Vegas grilled fabulous Wagyu steaks we picked up in Healdsburg. I couldn’t get over how good it was! I’m sure it was her mad grilling skills, not the cut of meat.

Despite my lack of blogging.

I revived an old tradition and ran the Peachtree Roadrace 10K on the 4th of July. About 3 miles in, I discovered that I’d rather run in heat than humidity. It wasn’t terribly hot (maybe 80?), but the heavy, wet air made for a painful last half of the race.

Friday was 10 years since my dad died. My mom decided to treat my sisters and me to a weekend away. I got to go trail running for the first time in… errrrr… probably 2 years?! It had just rained and this baby waterfall was a gorgeous find.

We had quite the adventures roaming the little community on the golf cart. My sisters should be trusted to drive.

Mom one-upped my cheeseboard game, as per usual (last pic below). Those prosciutto-wrapped peaches were the jam. One day I’ll reach her level of game.

Back home this week I’ve been depending on work for meals, but I did manage to get dinner prepped just in time for #WIAW.

Breakfast:

As always, I made my morning cocktail before walking to work.

I had good intentions of trying intermittent fasting… but then I got hungry. La Croix and a Pure Protein bar = breakfast of champions!

Lunch:

Lunch was provided by work. Today was shawarma – chicken and beef. The tahini sauce they bring with it is money.

Snack:

Snacks aren’t pictured, but I had the agitated munchies. I snacked on some string cheese, Pop Chips, and a fun-sized Almond Joy throughout the afternoon. Happens…

Then I had a glass of wine with my manicure and pedicure after work. I never get my nails done, but it’s birthday week.

Dinner:

Dinner was my one homecooked dish. I made an easy ground turkey dish that’s become a staple. I just sautee whatever veggies I have in the fridge with some olive oil (this time was mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, and garlic). That goes to a plate and I brown the ground turkey, mixing in 2 tsp of ground turmeric, 1/2 tsp cumin, and a big pinch of cayenne, salt, and pepper. Toss the veggies back in to warm and it’s done!

Last night I had it over spinach and asparagus. It’s also tasty stuffed in a sweet potato.

There miiiiiight have been some chocolate consumed while writing this and packing.

One more day until the birthday trip commences. Vegas is taking me to Sonoma and then Lake Tahoe!

Would you rather run in humidity or heat?

You guys. I know I shouldn’t complain after begging to move back to Atlanta for 3 years… but sweet lawd it is HOT and HUMID!

I went to college in Florida for two years (Go Noles). It rained every single day at 4:30, but I expect that insanity from Florida. Georgia, you are not Florida. Stop being a poser. I swear it never rained this much before…

In any case, I’m schvitzing. My misery has tasty company though! While I wish Vegas were my company (yup, she’s still not here yet), in this case, it’s food. This hot, humid summer was the inspiration for this no-cook, super easy, deliciously refreshing Chili-Lime Watermelon & Jicama Salad!

Both jicama and watermelon are composed mostly of water. What do you need on a hot day? WATER. In your body, not pounding down on you at 4:30 running in what feels like a damn steam bath. I digress.

Add a generous sprinkle of Tajin to really make it pop. For those that haven’t tried it, Tajin is a spicy, salty, lime-y spice blend. When paired with fruit, it creates a crave-worthy sweet ‘n salty combo.

Pro tip: try rimming your margarita glass with Tajin. Epic combo.

This salad is the perfect thing to eat on a hot day. It’s not going to weigh you down, but if you want to add some carb-y goodness, scoop it up with tortilla chips!

For you spice-averse people, don’t worry about the Tajin being too much. It’s not a sriracha-level spice.

I joined a “real” gym and ran a 5K.

Slowly I’m re-joining (my version of) the real world.

It’s my last <del>year</del> month in my race age group. Last weekend I ran a 5K that I was hoping I could get a 1st place in (in my age group). I came in 2nd and I’m not at all upset – the girl that beat me finished a full 2 minutes faster. I finished in 25:36:58. This tells me I’m not trying hard enough when I run on my own (2-3 mins slower). It’s just SO hot though!

Also, I still got a rainbow medal and a race t-shirt. Can’t be sad about that.

The “real” gym I joined is an LA Fitness. I’d been using the free office gym, but it just doesn’t have everything I need. Like a squat rack. The bad part about LA Fitness is that it is SO crowded. There aren’t any better alternatives nearby though.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BkOfrbnFXzC/?taken-by=sprint2thetable

Taking this picture yesterday, I realized how far I’ve come since my ACL surgery. It’s only been 10 months and I’m able to do *basically* anything I could before.

And oh, by the way, the other ACL is still torn. Not doing that surgery again until my knee falls off. That shit HURT.

But you came here for the food. This #WIAW is back on track with meal prep life.

Breakfast:

As always, I made my morning cocktail before walking to work.

I’m back to bringing my breakfast to work this week. Boiled eggs have been my go-t0. I used to think I hated them; then I discovered I only hated them hard-boiled. Medium or soft boiled eggs are delicious! They were enjoyed over some cauliflower I’d roasted in nutritional yeast and mustard. Plus sriracha (always).

Lunch:

Lunch was provided by work. They bring in lunch 3 days a week. Today was my favorite vendor – Gusto! DIY taco bowls are the best. The sweet potato chips don’t suck either.

Dinner:

Dinner was another meal prep dish. I made one of my favorite recipes on this blog: Balsamic Marinated Chicken. It’s stupid easy to make and packed with flavor. It was really nice to have over a salad after dragging myself home post-leg day.

How do you get a cold in the summer?

It makes zero sense.

Above is my sick meal of the day: chicken noodle soup and a turkey BLT from Panera. That’s basically all I ate today, aside from half a Quest bar and a cucumber. A sure sign I don’t feel good!

I was doing SO well with the meal prep, but this weekend with Vegas was crazy in the best way possible. No meal prep for me. Ending it all with a cold (obviously) didn’t help. Instead of laying around feeling sick and lonely, I thought I’d recap the awesome stuff we did while Vegas was here.

Awesome thing number one: we got a new car! It’s not here yet – they’re shipping it from another dealer – but that didn’t stop us from celebrating with a kick-ass dinner at Kimball House. Vegas had never been before, but all I had to say to get her excited was “they’re known for craft cocktails and oysters.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bj8eCmAFbwB/?taken-by=sprint2thetable

Here’s where we sound like nut jobs. We intended to get a new car; however, we went in looking for a small car. The preference for small may have been mine, but Vegas was on board. We left with a small SUV. The reason? They can’t put a hitch on a small car.

Why a hitch? Because we also bought this.

The jet ski, not the U-Haul.

This picture cracks me up. Could we be more of a stereotype? HAHAHA! The story gets better. Vegas picked me up in front of my office (pictured) because she needed help getting the thing to our garage. We had to pick the ski trailer up off the truck and wheel it down our (very narrow) street. While the landscaping guys watched. We really need our own reality show.

I’m jumping ahead in our weekend though. We started on Thursday with Hamilton. I got great tickets for us by selecting the obstructed view option. They were much more affordable… which needs to see the right side of the stage anyway?

We did dinner beforehand at a place I’m sure to frequent now that I’ve tried it once – Bar Margot. I’m not usually one to eat at a restaurant in a hotel, but this is an exception. Owned by my favorite local restaurateur, it’s nothing like any other hotel dining in Atlanta.

Food is good. Drinks are great. The lighting is also perfect for selfies. You can’t lose.

The last highlight was my friend Ben’s birthday. He wanted to go to The Colonnade, whose clientele is endearingly referred to as “grays and gays.” The food is old school Southern, and the drinks are strong. You do the math.

Despite this being an Atlanta institution since 1927, I’d never been. Ask me why and I couldn’t tell you. I knew I’d love the place when I walked in and saw an older gentleman sitting a the bar drinking a martini. It was 1 pm.

My granny may have made their fried chicken, but the highlight – for me – was the tomato aspic. Aspic is straight out of a 1950s Southern Living. It’s not something I’d necessarily order on my own, but it warmed my #strangebutgood heart.

Yes, that’s a side of mayo its served with.

Happy #WIAW! I totally broke the rules, but I also barely ate. Don’t be me.

Motivation is a powerful thing.

An upcoming birthday and beachy vacation help.

Something about turning 35 (how did I get that old?!) lit a fire under my ass. I’ve always been good about keeping up with workouts, but I’ve been doing more running lately. I’ve also started doing planks again. The above pic was taken yesterday after a killer leg workout.

Do this workout and try a (very shaky) plank after. For each exercise, do 4 sets of 15-8 reps. Increase the weight each time.

Leg extensions

Hamstring curls

Squats

Reverse barbell lunges

Straight leg deadlifts

Leg press

Running is more fun for me in Atlanta. I love the scenery. The park, the flowers, all the crazy people on the Beltline trail. It’s great.

What you don’t see in the pic from a recent run is the humidity. I swear… running in a steam room would be more comfortable. Backward.

Then there’s the food. As I said, exercise has never been a problem for me. Food… well, let’s just say I love to eat. Meal prepping went by the wayside when Vegas and I moved to San Diego. Why bother when you work from home?

I wasn’t sure I’d get into it again. Now that I’ve been at it for two weeks, I’m no longer worried. It makes life SO much easier and helps me stay on track.

This #WIAW is week 2 of meal prep life.

Breakfast:

As always, I made my morning cocktail before walking to work.

I’ve been bringing my breakfast to work lately. I don’t wake up early enough to have breakfast a home. Eating that early doesn’t appeal to me anyway.

Prepping hardboiled eggs and having apples on hand isn’t hard. It’s certainly healthier than my usual protein bar at the office. What is hard is dealing with the fact that you accidentally threw away one of the two eggs you brought. #fail

Lunch:

Lunch was the Bison Meatloaf Muffins I posted the recipe for yesterday. Plus sides.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BjqTnRvFnc8/?taken-by=sprint2thetable

Dinner:

Dinner was another pre-made dish: turmeric ground turkey. What I actually at it with was a salad and sweet potato. This is a pic of what I took to work for lunch today. I was starving when I got home and forgot a pic of the actual dinner. Either way, you get the idea.
