The last public work of SNCF cognitive program on the analysis of behavioural impact of map design on traveller’s mobility path choices, recently presented at the Schematic Map Workshop in Wien, is now online.

The ANR founded Wildtimes project, a collaboration between CEA, SNCF & IFSTTAR, will contribute to the understanding of the representation of time in the human brain by empirically contrasting current theories on how the human brain maps time during complex trajectories, and will contribute to practical application.

WILDTIMES r�sum�

Le temps, l�espace et la dur�e sont imbriqu�s dans notre vie quotidienne, et pourtant ils ont rarement �t� �tudi�s ensemble dans des situations r�elles. Le projet WildTimes initie une ligne de recherche ambitieuse reliant la cognition temporelle et la cognition spatiale chez les humains en situation de d�placement. Ce projet propose d�ouvrir une voie possible sur la fa�on dont le cerveau humain cartographie le temps lors de trajets complexes. WildTimes a pour ambition de contribuer � la recherche fondamentale en opposant, sur la base de donn�es empiriques, des th�ories actuelles sur la mani�re dont le cerveau humain se repr�sente le temps, mais contribuera �galement � des applications pratiques notamment par le d�veloppement ou l�am�lioration d�outils d�aide � la mobilit�. Dans ce projet, nous interrogerons l�impact des technologies actuelles de transport sur notre repr�sentation du temps et en retour, la fa�on dont le temps ressenti peut influer sur le choix de nos modes de transports et de nos itin�raires. Le premier objectif visera � �tablir si les actuelles observations de laboratoire sur la perception du temps – et ses illusions � r�sisteront au test des observations de la vie r�elle dans des milieux �cologiques et technologiques. Nous mettrons � l’�preuve plusieurs paradigmes exp�rimentaux caract�risant la perception subjective du temps, en laboratoire et en situation de mobilit�. Notre second objectif doit son origine � la divergence qui, avec les progr�s des modes de transport, a confront� notre cerveau � des informations divergentes entre les distances spatiales parcourues et le temps n�cessaire pour les parcourir. Par exemple, si un pas en marche moyenne produit typiquement un d�placement spatial de 5 km par heure (~ 3,1 miles), nos moyens de transport actuels ont largement augment� l’appr�ciation relativiste des distances par rapport au temps. Du point de vue des neurosciences cognitives, la notion de cartographie fonctionnelle est centrale pour la repr�sentation spatiale et temporelle de l’environnement: les cartes cognitives sont un syst�me de repr�sentations permettant � un individu de d�duire sa position dans l’environnement. Nous interrogerons ainsi comment le temps et l’espace interagissent lorsqu’ils ne sont pas totalement congruents avec le moi corporel. Notre troisi�me objectif est d�approfondir notre compr�hension des interactions entre temps et espace en situation de mobilit� afin de caract�riser la mani�re dont les individus choisissent leurs itin�raires dans les transports en commun, comment l�exp�rience subjective du temps et de l�espace contribuent � ce choix et vont �ventuellement � l�encontre des distances et temps objectifs de parcours. Ces informations permettront d�optimiser les actuels processus et syst�mes d�information voyageurs. Pour r�pondre � ces trois objectifs, nous nous appuierons sur le recueil de donn�es comportementales classiques et nous utiliserons une m�thode de neuroimagerie mobile non-invasive lors des trajets afin de quantifier les r�ponses c�r�brales � la perception du temps lors de voyages r�els. Le projet WildTimes contribuera � comprendre comment le cerveau humain se repr�sente le temps dans des situations r�elles. En caract�risant l’impact de diff�rents contextes de mobilit� sur la perception subjective du temps, nous initierons la compr�hension de la part du subjectif dans la prise de d�cision concernant les itin�raires en transport en commun, et aiderons ainsi � �laborer de nouveaux outils d�aide � la navigation. Notre projet ouvrira de nouvelles voies empiriques pour �tudier la perception du temps tout en offrant de nouvelles perspectives et de nouveaux outils permettant d�am�liorer la mobilit� quotidienne des voyageurs.

WILDTIMES abstract

Time, space and duration are intertwined concepts of our daily life, yet they have rarely been assessed together in real-life situations. The WildTimes project will initiate an ambitious line of research bridging temporal and spatial cognition in humans during real-world navigation, and pave the way towards understanding how the human brain maps time during complex travels. WildTimes will contribute to fundamental research by empirically contrasting theories of how the human brain represents time, and to practical applications with the conception and the optimization of novel tools to help individuals navigate transportation networks. In this project, we will question how, nowadays, transportation technologies have affected our representation of time, and in turn, how our representation of time affects the transport mode or the itinerary we select. In our first objective, we wish to establish whether typical lab observations on temporal perception – and its illusions – sustain the test of real-life observations in ecological settings. We will elaborate and put to the test several experimental paradigms typically characterizing an individual�s perception of time, in the lab and during transportation. In our second objective, we depart from the observation that with the advances of transport modes, our brain is confronted with discrepant information between the spatial distances that are being travelled, and the time it takes to travel them. For instance, if an average walking pace typically produces a spatial displacement of the self of 5 km (~3.1 miles) an hour, our current means of transportations largely increased the relativistic appreciation of distances with respect to time. In cognitive neuroscience, the notion of cognitive map is central for the spatial and temporal mapping of the environment: cognitive maps are a system of representations in the brain enabling an individual to infer its position in the environment. In our second objective, we will thus ask how time and space interact when not fully congruent with the bodily self. In a third objective, we will build on our understanding of time perception and its interaction with space during transport to address how participants may choose particular itineraries in public transports, weight the subjective experience of time and space against veridical information and seek to perfect current means of informing users for better travel experiences. Transversal to all three goals, we will collect behavioral and non-invasive neuroimaging data to assess brain responses during timing tasks in the wild i.e. during public transport. The WildTimes project will help address how the human brain represents time in real-world situations. By characterizing the impact of real-life transports on time perception, we will help understand subjective processes in decision-making for choosing between transport itineraries, in turn helping the elaboration of new tools to help navigation. Our project will thus open new empirical avenues to study time perception while providing novel insights and tools to help travelers in their transport choices.

Job Description

A full-time postdoctoral position is available at NeuroSpin (CEA, DRF/Joliot, INSERM Cognitive NeuroImaging Unit; http://i2bm.cea.fr/dsv/i2bm/Pages/NeuroSpin.aspx) funded by the ANR WildTimes for up to 3 years.

The selected candidate will work directly with Virginie van Wassenhove and in collaboration with Simone Morgagni and Val�rie Gyselinck. The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for the development and transfer of knowledge activities within the collaborative project. The selected candidate will contribute to the consolidation, development, and validation of experimental protocols during train travels. S/he will setup EEG recordings in the wilds, help supervise Master and PhD students and perform control MEG/EEG experiments in the lab.

The successful candidate will benefit from the interdisciplinary collaboration, is expected to work mainly at NeuroSpin, and actively coordinate with members of the teams as frequently as necessary for the advancement of the project. Involvement in the organizational and managerial aspects specific to the project are expected including the supervision of PhD and master students, and the organization of meetings for the consortium. The typical scientific contribution to the health of a research group is also expected, including taking part to the weekly group and lab meetings, regular presentations and informal discussions with the different members of the team and the consortium.

Requirements for the candidates:

• hold a PhD in cognitive neurosciences, neurosciences, psychology, and/or related fields;
• solid record of internationally peer-reviewed published work;
• expertise or strong interest in time perception, temporal and/or spatial cognition;
• solid understanding of statistics;
• prior experience with EEG or MEG methods ;
• signal processing and programming skills (matlab; python a plus);
• some notions to mastery of French language highly beneficial

Les charg�s de mission seront int�gr�s au sein de la Direction Innovation & Recherche SNCF, dans le groupe � Conception et Technologies pour le Voyageur � (CTV). CTV d�veloppe de nombreux projets anticipant les �volutions soci�tales et les nouveaux usages et con�oit des nouveaux produits et services � destination des voyageurs et des m�tiers SNCF. L��quipe est compos�e d�ing�nieurs et chercheurs en t�l�com, IoT, traitement automatique du langage naturel, cognitique, s�miotique, IHM, d�veloppement informatique, g�omatique, psychoacoustique et design.

ENJEUX ET OBJECTIFS

La Direction Innovation & Recherche d�veloppe depuis 2017 un programme de recherche intitul� � Exp�rience & Cognition � dont le but est de comprendre plus en profondeur les composantes cognitives et exp�rientielles entrant en jeu dans l�interaction entre les salari�s, les voyageurs et l�univers SNCF et plus g�n�ralement de la mobilit� afin d�en am�liorer l�exp�rience ou l�efficacit�. Dans ce cadre, plusieurs �tudes n�cessitant un recours � des explorations de terrain approfondies sont pr�vues et sont destin�es � toucher les trois sujets suivants : – Imaginaires et impacts des nouvelles formes de mobilit�s et des potentielles innovations que SNCF pourrait apporter dans ce domaine (navettes et train autonome, mobilit� � la demande, etc.) ; – Perception du temps en mobilit�, usages et transformation du temps de transport en temps utile via la compr�hension des espaces de mobilit� comme lieux � part enti�re permettant l�identification et la conception d�une offre de service renouvel�e � bord ; – Usages et confiance accord�e l�information voyageurs � bord et en gare et impact de ceux-ci sur la prise de d�cision et le confort des voyageurs. Dans le cadre des missions indiqu�es ci-dessus, la t�che du charg� de mission sera d�identifier et d�analyser de mani�re fine les diff�rentes perceptions et exp�riences v�cues par les clients SNCF. Ce questionnement devra principalement �tre construit par le biais un travail d�observation de terrain.

PROFIL ET COMPETENCES RECHERCHES

The symposium is an invitation addressed to both new and established researchers, as well as experts from the private or public spheres, who seek to rethink – or even revolutionize- mobility as a societal problem and/or practice.

The main topic will focus the relation of mobility systems�� to metropolitan territories and places, through fields of knowledge and action as varied as architecture, engineering, geography, new technologies, and others.

The underlying premise of this event is that a new inter- disciplinary, inter-cultural� and� inter-stakeholder� dialogue is necessary in order to respond effectively to the urban mobility issues put forward by the three pillars (social, political and cultural) of sustainable development. Thus, within the context of a needed energy transition, how to combine the growing necessity and desire for speed in travel, with the imperative of reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gases? At the same time, how to achieve a better quality of public space dedicated to or crossed by mobility?

How to ensure that the mobility of people, whether undergone or chosen, is part of a municipal and societal project that is acceptable and sustainable?

In an attempt to answer these questions, the IMM Chair has focused its research on the evolution of railway stations, station districts and railway lines (heavy and light rail) in their relation to public space, and, on wider scales, to the city and the metropolitan territory. On one hand, this work has led to the analysis of architectural and urban theories � and, in particular, contributions from French, German and Italian theorists – on the ways of thinking and building the space of the 19th and the 20th century western city, as well as its mobility infrastructures. On the other hand, the work has focused on the current transformations of the contemporary metropolis and Future Studies theories, in order to understand the place of the prospective and exploratory scenarios in the metropolitan project.

This event is an opportunity to enrich and widen the debate on urban mobility issues, in the light of other research experiences (fundamental and/or applied), innovation actions and (spatial) design projects, conducted in various metropolitan contexts and reaching to articulate the question of mobility (and its multiple aspects -technical, technological, ontological, spatial, etc.) with ways of thinking and making contemporary urban places and territories.

Cette association pluriannuelle a pour objectif d�identifier, de d�velopper et de partager les meilleures pratiques dans les domaines de la conception de p�le d��changes multimodaux, et notamment dans celui de l�information aux voyageurs.

Une consultation pr�alable des acteurs acad�miques int�ress�s par des partenariats de recherche va �tre men�e afin de solliciter des avis concernant les trois domaines retenus dans le cadre de cette association et notamment :

1. Orientation et cartographie ;
2. Syst�mes signal�tique et information dynamique ;
3. Illustration narrative pour les voyageurs.

Pour l�ensemble de ces domaines, les travaux de recherche envisag�s concernent :

• les m�thodes et protocoles d��valuation, comparaison et optimisation ;
• la mesure de l�efficacit� objective et subjective ;
• l�exp�rimentation in vitro et en situation �cologique ;
• l�accompagnement et les recommandations permettant l�am�lioration des produits et des services offerts aux voyageurs.

La liste non exclusive des disciplines et domaines scientifiques cibl�s est la suivante : cartographie; ergonomie; perception; psychologie ; sciences cognitives; s�miotique ; th�orie narrative et narration visuelle.

Les partenaires

Le programme �Exp�rience & Cognition�, lanc� en 2017 par la Direction Innovation & Recherche SNCF a, entre autres, pour objectif d�am�liorer, par une meilleure prise en compte des composantes sensorielles et cognitives, l�interaction entre le Groupe SNCF et ses clients.

La SGP, en qualit� de ma�tre d’ouvrage, a la responsabilit� de concevoir, de construire et d��quiper les espaces de 59 nouvelles gares en Ile-de-France, dont une tr�s large majorit� sera en correspondance avec les lignes des r�seaux de transport en commun franciliens existants (m�tro, RER, Transilien). Son Unit� Gares est en charge de la r�daction et de l�accompagnement � la bonne application du R�f�rentiel de Conception des gares, corpus de documents programmatiques portant sur les fonctionnalit�s, la s�curit�, les services, les am�nagements et les mobiliers des gares.
